When Does Training End? I recently overheard a conversation between two firefighters who were talking about all of the experience they had in their department. I looked up and asked, “how many years have you been in the department?” I actually chuckled when I was told by one of the members that he had six years of experience in the fire service. I am willing to bet that as you read my last sentence, you too have a smile on your face. Truthfully, being a first responder is a job that requires constant training and practice from your first day on the job until your last.

Years of service does not necessarily qualify you to say that you are an experienced responder. This time of the year, I get nervous because we are entering brush fire season. Let’s face it, many firefighters have very little experience fighting brush fires. I am sure if you have been in the fire service for a few years, you have encountered a brush fire that might appear large to you upon arrival, but in reality it was a small fire that was quickly knocked down by two or three members who were lucky enough to be part of the crew on the brush truck. The fire that I worry about is the wind-driven brush fire that manages to take advantage of the strong winds of spring and runs through an area like a freight

train. The next time you sit in your ready room, share stories of brush fires of the past that have challenged your department.

Training never ends. All responders need to know every aspect of their job. Are you able to perform your job when the conditions get rough? Ask yourself if you are truly physically fit to perform under challenging conditions. Kudos to those members that go to the gym regularly to maintain their fitness and cardio performance.

Are you a student of your craft? Do you read articles that talk about recent fires or new products? When was the last time you came down to the firehouse and took a short rope and performed some of the basic knots with which you’re supposed to be proficient?

Do you know how to use that knot to quickly hoist a line or a tool to a roof? If you think you can, challenge yourself and do it!

Talking about forcing a door is not the same as doing it. Don’t wait for the yearly drill on a specific tool. You must remain proficient in the techniques and operations that you use every day.

Regardless of your years of experience, your current rank or your rank from the past, lead by example. Remain dedicated to your job. Study, practice, try new things, and ask

questions! A story of the past that is shared with one another means nothing if it does not end with a lesson being shared and learned by others.

When the alarm sounds, respond to the call with enthusiasm. If you miss the truck, stay at the firehouse until the truck returns.

Offer to fill bottles, wash tools, and hear the story about the call.

When does training end? I say never!

9+ Alarm Fire Destroys New England Casket Company

On March 15, 2019, Boston Fire Department companies responded for a fire on the roof of the New England Casket Company, in the East Boston section of the city. Companies initially found fire in an HVAC-type unit but it was determined that the fire had spread along the roofline. A trench cut was performed but was unable to stop the spread of the fire. Second and third alarms were struck due to accessibility issues — the MBTA’s Blue Line ran adjacent to the building — and water pressure problems. As the incident progressed, fourth through ninth alarms were struck, foam operations were initiated, the Blue Line was shut down, and the Orient Heights

neighborhood was evacuated due to the spread of smoke. A full HazMat response was also assigned due to the solvents stored in the building. Companies fought the fire defensively. As night descended, command reported a significant ember problem and requested additional companies to the scene to focus on any potential secondary fires. A brief rainstorm passed through mitigating that issue.

Companies remained on scene throughout the night chasing hot spots. The building was a total loss.

1 FF, 1 Civ. Burned in Bridgeport Blaze

On February 3, 2019, Bridgeport (CT) firefighters went to work at a well involved house fire. Crews arrived to heavy fire on the second floor of a home on Garfield Avenue with fire starting to show on the third floor.

Firefighters had reports of one occupant still inside and searches began.

Truck companies were able to get to the back of the structure and find and remove one victim from the building who had severe burns and was in respiratory distress. The victim was transported to Bridgeport Hospital.

Engine companies started to lose water as they were starting a push on the fire, making for a tense situation and causing firefighters to have to bail on the second floor for a short time. It was found out later that a line had burned through. A second alarm was struck for extra resources to the scene.

One firefighter suffered second degree burns to his arms and ears.

4th Floor Apartment Fire in Fall River

The City of Fall River (MA) Fire Department fought a fourth-floor apartment fire in a converted Catholic girl’s high school at the Mount Apartment’s on Middle Street on a frigid February 1, 2019, night. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin.

Stoughton Apartment Building Totalled

Around 1400 hours on February 25, 2019, the Stoughton (MA) Fire Department responded to a house fire on Prospect Street.

Companies arrived to find heavy smoke showing from a 2-1/2 story wood framed multiple family apartment building. Shortly after arrival a second alarm was called. With high sustained winds and wind gusts in the area in the 50-mph range, the fire was pushed through the building faster than the firefighters could extinguish it.

Interior firefighters reported heavy fire and all crews were evacuated for defensive operations and a third alarm was struck bringing multiple mutual aid. Three ladder pipes were put into operation, with multiple large hand lines stretched and operating. Fire conditions quickly deteriorated and pushed fire through the roof.

The building was a total loss. No injuries were reported.

Large Home Goes in Weston Shortly after 2100 on February 10, 2019, the Weston (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Good Hill Road for a structure fire. First companies arrived to heavy fire showing from the D side of a 7000-square-foot private home.

The fire quickly extended and ended up going through the roof shortly after arrival.

Companies from Wilton, Westport and Georgetown provided mutual aid. It was reported that a man, two children, and their dog made it to safety before fire crews arrived.

The home was estimated to be worth $2 million.

Fatality in Worcester Blaze On February 2, 2019, Worcester (MA) firefighters responded to a residential structure fire on Upsala Street. Crews arrived to heavy fire in an occupied residence. One person made it out of the house, but there was one fatality.

Popular Southington Supermarket Burns On March 3, 2019, Southington (CT) firefighters responded to a fire at a family-owned grocery store, Tops Marketplace, on MeridenWaterbury Turnpike. Firefighters arrive to heavy fire coming out all vents on the roof. The roof of the building later collapsed. Mutual aid was requested from Meriden, Cheshire and Plainville. The cause was under investigation.

Firefighters battled a fire in Windsor (CT) on February 17, 2019, on Giddings Avenue. Companies arrived to find heavy smoke showing from a single-story ranch. One dog and one cat perished in the fire.

Sterling Fire Contained A two-alarm fire in a single-family dwelling in Sterling (MA) caused significant damage to the basement. Firefighters were able to contain the fire from spreading to the upper floors. Mutual aid came from Lancaster, Clinton and Leominster.

Johnston FF Loses House Glocester (RI) fire companies were toned out to a possible dwelling fire on Phillips Lane on March 20, 2019. The caller reported that he thought his neighbor’s house was on fire. The incident commander arrived on scene to report a well involved two-story, wood frame dwelling that was set back off of the roadway. The chief reported that the firefight was going to be defensive. Tankers were special called as the dwelling was in area not supplied by hydrants. A Johnston (RI) firefighter lived in the dwelling.

He and his family lost everything. A GoFundMe site has been created to assist the family.

Cambridge 3-Alarm On February 11, 2019, the Cambridge (MA) Fire Department responded to a building fire on Putnam Avenue. The fire was on the second floor, and extended up into the third floor and attic. Second and third alarms were ordered bringing all Cambridge companies and mutual aid to the scene.

Whitman 5-Alarmer

On February 13, 2019, the Whitman (MA) Fire Department was alerted for a fire in a second-floor apartment on Commercial Street.

Deputy Chief Joe Feeney requested a second alarm for fire showing from the B side of the large, six-family, 2-1/2 story, wood frame. With conditions deteriorating, and all occupants out, companies were pulled. Whitman and Brockton crews vented the roof line and their ladder pipes were put into operation. The fire eventually went to five alarms, but did not extend. At least 12 residents were displaced and the building was demolished the next day.

West Haven Vacant Commercial Building Fire

At approximately 0115 on February 17, 2019, the West Haven (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Water Street for a reported vacant building fire. First companies found heavy fire through the roof of the old vacant Bilco Company, a two-story commercial building. This is the second vacant building in this neighborhood to catch fire in nine days and is under investigation by the fire marshal.

Norwich 3-Alarmer Deemed Suspicious Recently, Norwich (CT) Fire was dispatched to Prospect Avenue and Hickory Street in the Greenville section of the city, where Norwich Police were reporting a heavily involved dwelling. Crews found a Prospect Avenue house with the rear porches heavily involved and fire extending to all floors. A second alarm was declared and two engines and a truck were added. The main body of fire was knocked down, but pockets of fire were found in several locations, resulting in command calling a third alarm. The FMO and CFMO determined the fire was suspicious in nature. Mutual aid came from Mohegan Tribe, Taftville, East Great Plain, Laurel Hill and Yantic.

Framingham 2-Alarmer The Framingham (MA) Fire Department was dispatched to Windsor Drive for a fire on February 13, 2019. Engine 7 arrived to find a shed on fire extending to the adjacent two-story brick apartment building.

Companies found heavy fire inside multiple units and a second alarm was called. Multiple lines were stretched and Ladder 3 used ground ladders to open the roof. The fire was continuing to extend through the attic but firefighters were able to extinguish the bulk of the fire and the incident was placed under control in 45 minutes. Two units were heavily damaged by the fire and multiple others sustained smoke and water damage.

Roxbury 6-Alarmer Firefighters recently battled a six-alarm fire in Roxbury (MA) under frigid weather conditions.

Coventry House Goes During Power Outage A Coventry (RI) dwelling on Plainfield Pike was destroyed by a three-alarm fire during a windstorm that caused a large power outage in the area. Reportedly, a generator sparked the fire. The first arriving fire company radioed that the dwelling was fully involved. A defensive posture was maintained until the fire was deemed under control.

East Hartford Truck Fire On February 12, 2019, East Hartford (CT) firefighters responded to a box truck fire on Goodwin Street around 2315. No injuries were reported.

Tanker Truck Fire on I-91 On February 19, 2019, Rocky Hill (CT) firefighters fought a tanker truck fire on Interstate 91 north with multiple mutual aid departments and agencies. The highway remained closed for most of the day.

Transformer Fire at Yale A fire in an electrical transformer at Yale University’s Klein Biology Tower, posed a unique set of challenges for firefighters in New Haven (CT) on February 24, 2019. The fire was in the building that contained multiple hazards, but was confined to the basement of the high-rise. New Haven Fire Chief John Alston treated the blaze as a Hazardous Materials and Confined-Space incident.

Manchester 2-Alarmer

Manchester (CT) firefighters responded to a second-alarm fire on School Street on February 21, 2019. The second alarm was quickly called and area mutual aid was requested for standby and to the scene.

East Windsor Fire A fire broke out on Bridge Street in the Warehouse Point section of East Windsor (CT) on March 16, 2019. The fire was on the roof of the building and crews were able to contain it without further incident. No injuries were reported.

2 Die in New Britain Fire On February 24, 2019, New Britain (CT) firefighters were dispatched to Elam Street for a fire with people reportedly trapped.

Upon arrival a second alarm was sounded. Despite an aggressive attack, two individuals lost their lives. Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours.

Wind Escalates Hamden Fire On February 25, 2019, the Hamden (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Fallon Drive for a house fire. First companies found heavy fire showing from a single-story ranch with an exposure problem on the D side due to heavy winds. The homeowner was helped to safety by neighbors prior to fire department arrival. The fire would escalate to a second alarm before being put under control. Mutual aid came from New Haven, North Haven and Cheshire. The fire is under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.

Winds Spread Fire in West Haven Vacancy At approximately 2230 on February 8, 2019, the West Haven (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Richard Place for a reported fire in a vacant house. First companies found fire on two floors of a vacant 2-1/2 wood building. Heavy winds quickly spread the fire and a second alarm was called to put the fire under control. Companies from Center District, West Shore, Allingtown, Milford and New Haven provided mutual aid. The fire is under investigation by the fire marshal.

Nice Stop in Woonsocket An outside fire extended up to the attic at an occupied three-story, wood frame dwelling on Park Place in Woonsocket (RI) on March 16, 2019. The fire apparently started in rubbish placed against the charlie side of the dwelling and extended upwards. The fire was aided by vinyl siding that was covered with dry cedar shakes. Command requested a second alarm as the fire was making its way through the balloon-framed dwelling. An aggressive interior attack contained the fire to the charlie side of the dwelling.

Quick Work in Springfield On March 2, 2019, Springfield (MA) firefighters responded to a residential structure fire on Oak Street in a large 2-½ story wood frame structure. The fire was on the second floor and quickly knocked down by first-due crews.

Total Loss in Trumbull Recently, the Trumbull Center, Nichols, and Long Hill Volunteer Fire Companies (CT) were dispatched to Sylvan Avenue for a structure fire. First companies reported heavy fire on all floors of a two-story, wood frame, private dwelling. It was reported that the occupant heard his smoke detector and escaped prior to crews’ arrival. He was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. The house was a total loss.

Well Involved in Groton A two-alarm fire in a ranch-style home on Nashua Road in Groton (MA) left the structure uninhabitable. Chief of Department Steele McCurdy encountered heavy fire conditions out the front with some of the home already beginning to collapse. No one was home at the time of the fire. Mutual aid came from Ayer, Littleton, Westford, Dunstable, Pepperell, Townsend, Tyngsboro and Devens. The fire was extinguished in about an hour.

We’ve Been Here Before Hartford (CT) firefighters responded to a fire in a vacant building on Garden Street in the city’s North End on February 27, 2019. This is the latest of several working fires in the same building over the past 12 months.

Good Work at South Providence 3-Alarmer A three-alarm fire broke out in a South Providence (RI) threestory occupied dwelling on Sumter Street on March 27, 2019.

Callers reported the possibility of trapped occupants as the firstdue companies arrived. Heavy overlapping fire was venting from the Delta side that was impinging on exposure D. An aggressive interior attack and search began under extreme conditions. The searches proved negative but several dogs were rescued and were treated by EMS. The fire extended through all floors and the attic before being brought under control.

Cover Story

30 Displaced in Townsend Blaze Firefighters responded to a three-story garden apartment on February 4, 2019 in Townsend (MA). The fire, in one of five buildings, started shortly before 0800 in a second-floor bathroom. Twenty-one of the 24-units were occupied and all residents got out safely. About 100 firefighters fought the blaze for more than four hours.

Firefighters were hampered by inconsistent water supply and crews had to draft from a nearby river. The Red Cross was called to assist displaced residents.

5 Injured in Haddam Crash At 2105 on February 2, 2019, Haddam (CT) Volunteer Fire Company and Chester Hose Company were dispatched for a two-car MVA on Saybrook Road near the Jail Hill Road intersection in Haddam. One vehicle was found on its roof with two occupants still inside. Crews stabilized the vehicle and assessed the occupants, both of whom were alert with minor injuries. Firefighters extricated both and they were transported to Middlesex Hospital. Firefighters and EMS personnel also worked to rescue three occupants of the second vehicle. The driver of that vehicle had self-extricated and complained of minor injuries.

He and two passengers were also transported to Middlesex Hospital.

Aviation Assist at Water Rescue West Springfield (MA) firefighters responded for a water rescue on March 9, 2019. Massachusetts State Police Aviation assisted in the rescue.

Medevac at Mass Pike MVA Crews responded to a tractor trailer accident on the off ramp of the Massachusetts Turnpike westbound to I-290 and I-395.

Worcester was special called for their tech rescue gear to help stabilize the truck. Lifeflight was called to the scene and a person was transported to U-Mass Hospital in Worcester.

Rollover in Duxbury On March 3, 2019, Duxbury (MA) firefighters responded to Route 3 north, north of Exit 11, for an MVA with rollover into the woods. One person was found self-extricated and was ambulatory. The patient was transported by ground to South Shore Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Norton Live Fire Training

On the morning of February 20, 2019, the Norton (MA) Fire Department held live fire training at a town-owned property set for demolition on North Worcester Street. Firefighters worked on several evolutions prior to the live fire training. This included emergency bail out, RIT, forcible entry and roof operations. After all of the over-30 full-time firefighters completed each station, crews were assigned different rolls for the live fire training. Crews worked on several techniques including search and rescue, and engine and truck company operations. Fires were initiated on the first floor and basement.

Jeff’s Box: A Different Approach to Training

On January 14, 2019, members of Haddam (CT) Volunteer Fire Company participated in a drill known as “Jeff’s Box” which involves working with a partner to sweep an enclosed area and find and identify five objects — blindfolded. Participants also must be equipped with SCBA. The drill was created three years ago by Firefighter Jeff Doskos.

During this drill, members searched for two commonly-used firefighting tools, a teddy bear, a flashlight and, ultimately, an appliance that has numerous fittings attached to it. One firefighter removed each fitting and handed it over to the other firefighter, who reassembled the appliance.

“The team needs to be aware of where they are in the room, how much air they have consumed, how many items they have already found, and communicate with each other regarding these found objects,” Doskos said. “I believe that this type of training helps fire fighters feel more comfortable in an odd and stressful environment which leads to safer decisions on the fire ground.”

Haddam’s Kadrle Honored for 50 Years of Service During the Haddam (CT) Volunteer Fire Company’s meeting on January 7, 2019, Firefighter Robert ‘Bob’ Kadrle was honored for 50 years of service to the company. Bob is the first member in the company’s 89 years of history to serve for this length of time.

In addition to receiving a 50-years-of-service pin from Chief Sam Baber, Bob was honored with a proclamation by Haddam First Selectwoman Lizz Milardo. She declared January 8, 2019, as Robert Kadrle Day for the Town of Haddam.

Bob joined Haddam Volunteer Fire Company in 1969 and has since served on multiple committees including the Old Timer’s Night Committee, the Children’s Christmas Party Committee, and the Picnic Committee.

He also served as a mechanic’s assistant in the mid-70s.

In Haddam, he has volunteered on the Town of Haddam’s Parade Committee and Veterans’ Museum Committee for more than 25 years.

Bob served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and was stationed in Korea, He retired as a mechanic for the State of Connecticut’s Department of Transportation.

Brockton 13 Remembered On the morning of March 8, 2019, members of the Brockton (MA) Fire Department gathered together at Brockton City Hall to remember the lives of 13 firefighters who were killed in the line of duty 78 years ago.

by Brockton Firefighters Union President Bill Hill, Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter, and Brockton Fire Chief Michael Williams.

Following, firefighters gathered around the Strand Theatre Memorial, which sits just outside of City Hall.

On March 10, 1941, 13 of the city’s firefighters lost their lives when the building collapsed as they fought the blaze at the Strand Theatre.

We will never forget the 13 firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty on that fateful day. They are: Captain John F. Carroll; Lieutenant Raymond A. Mitchell; and Firefighters Matthew E. McGeary, Roy A. McKeraghan, Denis P. Murphy, William J. Murphy, Daniel C. O’Brien, George A. Collins, Fredrick F. Kelley, Martin E. Lipper, Henry E. Sullivan, John M. McNeill, and Bartholomew Herlihy.

Awards Presented to High School Students for YouTube Burn Awareness Video Contest Teams of Massachusetts high school students and their media teachers received awards today for their creative YouTube videos as part of the 11th annual statewide YouTube Burn Awareness Video Contest.

State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey was joined by contest co-sponsors Ron Meehan from the Massachsuetts Property Insurance Underwriting Association (MPIUA) and Captain Rick Tustin, president of the Massachusetts Association of Safety and Fire Educators (MaSAFE), Saugus Fire Chief Michael C. Newbury of the Fire Chiefs’ Association of Massachusetts and Peabody Lieutenant Christopher Dowling, president of the Fire Prevention Association of Massachusetts. The ceremony was held at the Shriners Hospital for Children - Boston.

Regional, Maynard, Melrose, Millis, Nauset Regional, Northbridge, Norwood, Sutton, West Bridgewater, and Worcester North that submitted entries. While all of the videos were creative and interesting, the first-place winning team was from Masconomet Regional High School for their video Burn Awareness; the second-place winning team was from Northbridge High School for their gaming video Fire Safety is SIMple; and the third-place winners were from Melrose High School for their video Prevention Detectors. The winning videos can be seen on the Department of Fire Services’ YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/DFSOSFM.

Local Call/Volunteer Firefighters Graduate State Training Program Deputy State Fire Marshal Maribel Fournier and Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Director David C. Evans presented certificates of completion to members of the Call/Volunteer Recruit Firefighter Training Class 74. The ceremony took place on February 28, 2019, at Masconomet Regional Middle School in Boxford (MA).

The Call/Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Training program is unique in that it delivers a standard recruit training curriculum, meeting national standards, on nights and weekends to accommodate the schedule of firefighters in suburban and rural areas. It uses an online eBlended format that has students doing more work outside of class and taking quizzes online. This allows students more time to practice training skills with instructors and to better control their own workloads and time commitments.

The 24 graduates, one woman and 23 men, represent the 12 fire departments of Boxford, Essex, Georgetown, Groveland, Ipswich, Lynnfield, Rockport, Sherborn, Tyngsborough, Wenham, West Newbury, and Weston.

EMS PRO EXPO 2019 EMS PRO, Inc. will host their 2019 Expo at Foxwoods Resort Casino May 29 to June 1, 2019. The committee felt this location change was necessary in this, their fifth year of existence. The committee is fortunate in that it is based in Connecticut which is home to two of the largest casinos in the United States. The venue change provides them with the opportunity for a larger Exhibit Hall and larger classrooms.

With this new location comes a new track, FIRE PRO. This track was developed by the committee with the firefighter in mind, both professional and volunteer. The thought behind this new track is apparent in their theme “Uniting the EMS Community.” EMS is something that all public safety services have in common.

Bringing them together for an Expo makes great sense. EMS PRO Presenter Chairman Sean Fitch said “We already have a large firefighter presence so we thought having specific-fire based sessions, taught by industry experts, was a natural extension for EMS PRO.” Fitch went on to say “We already work together, why not train together.”

One of the goals for EMS PRO is to keep things fresh. “We want to evolve with the industry,” Bill Schietinger, President of EMS PRO, told Fire News. EMS PRO has grown from a local Expo with 500 attendees its first year to the largest Expo of its kind in the
