From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor Thankfully the air temperature has risen above freezing and the snow that has blanketed the firehouse since December is vanishing.

Springtime is the season for rebirth. I am not talking about nature. I am talking about the fire service. Have you given any thought to what has been going on during the cold months? As a first responder, you most likely concerned yourself with standbys during storms, making sure hydrants in your area were dug out and, like a true athlete, you found the time to train so you were ready for your next battle. This winter was rough on all of you. We had many serious fires and EMS calls. As spring revitalizes us, remember our brothers and sisters who were lost this winter.

What has been going on in the fire service that has a direct impact on you, the first responder? Most of you cannot answer this question.

If I asked you what is happening on April 15-16, 2015, could you tell me? This important date is The National Fire and Emergency Services Symposium, which is held in Washington, DC. Each year over 2000 fire and emergency officials go to our nation's capitol to attend seminars, participate in meetings with our friends in Congress and network to build positive relationships with our peers. At the conclusion of the event, our highest ranking officials pay tribute to our nation's firefighters and emergency services personnel.

Revitalize Through Knowledge In the hierarchy of the emergency services, we have districts, towns, cities, counties, states and our country. It is imperative that we work toward one goal, which insures the safety of you, the first responder. The Congressional Fire Services Institute has been working very hard to protect you. Thanks to our friends in government, Congress has approved the Fiscal Year 2015 Homeland Security Funding Bill.

A Volunteer Recruitment and Retention Bill was introduced into Congress by Senator Susan Collins (ME) and Congressman Peter King (NY-2). Learn more about these bills and other bills by visiting www.CFSI.org. You must educate yourself about the bills which directly affect you. Your voice needs to be heard. Talk to the people in the councils that represent you to make sure that they are present in Washington to voice support for the programs that will help you do your job safely.

Central Falls 3-Alarmer

Fire Alarm received calls for a possible trash can fire outside of a Central Street building on March 18, 2015. Engine 2 arrived to find a large rubbish container extending to a large 2-1/2 story, wood frame dwelling. A working fire was called and then second and third alarms. The fire rapidly spread upwards through the balloon-

framed side A walls to the attic. Several pets were rescued while firefighters were still in offensive attack mode. The conditions deteriorated and command pulled all firefighters outside for exterior streams.

Modern Firefighting in Waterbury

Shortly after noon on February 18, 2015, the Waterbury Fire Department was dispatched to Meriden Road for a commercial building fire. First units on scene found heavy fire at A-1 Storage, a storage facility comprised of five buildings.

The largest of the five was involved. Operations quickly went defensive due to concerns of propane tanks and ammunition exploding. The fire escalated to a second alarm and 118 storage units were destroyed. A drone that provided video and stills of the fire was also utilized by incident command to check on the changing conditions of the roof and roof-top units.

Drug Lab Fire in Providence

An illegal drug lab was ruled to be the cause of a five-alarm fire that destroyed a one- and two-story commercial complex on the corners of Kinsley and Sims Avenues on March 9, 2015. Engine 14 was toned out to investigate an alarm bell sounding and arrived to find heavy fire on the Sims Avenue side. The fire required several ladder

pipes, deck guns, and big lines to bring under control days after the fire was started. The ATF assisted local official with the investigation. Multiple mutual aid companies assisted the city on scene and covering the empty firehouses.

2 Injured in Webster Blaze

Vernon 2-Alarmer

On March 4, 2015, Webster firefighters responded to a call for smoke coming from the dwelling located on Malden Avenue. The caller also reported that two individuals had just come running out of the house. Webster Fire Chief Brian Hickey, who lives nearby, arrived on scene and reported heavy smoke and fire coming from a large two-story, split level. The lower floor of the home was heavily involved as firefighters arrived and attempted an aggressive interior attack. The fire was quickly extending to the upper floor while the attack was initiated. Mutual aid came from Dudley, Oxford and Douglas. Two occupants were injured, and were transported by Webster EMS to a local hospital.

On February 27, 2015, Vernon firefighters responded to a fire in a large Victorian house on Davis Avenue. Police arrived first, reporting fire and heavy smoke on the second floor. The first-due engine arrived and made an aggressive push but the fire had gained headway in the walls and got into the attic. Single digit temperatures, water problems and three feet of snow hampered firefighting efforts. A second alarm was struck bringing mutual aid from Ellington and Tolland to the scene with other departments covering the station.

Close Call in Strip Mall Blaze On March 5, 2015, a telephonic alarm came into the Fire Alarm for a River Street location in Fitchburg. A full assignment was dispatched to the scene under the command of C-2. On arrival, firefighters believed they had a roof fire and were setting up when they discovered smoke in a bar. A second alarm was struck as the fire spread very quickly once it reached an attic that was shared by two businesses and a community outreach organization. While the companies were being put to work, Lt. Michael Gelinas was operating a line on the D side of the 100,000-squarefoot complex when its roof collapsed pushing a wall down on top of him. Gelinas was pulled out by firefighters, checked out by Med-Star Medics and returned to fire duty.

Third and fourth alarms were called due to water issues. A faulty sprinkler system may have led to the destruction of the building. Mutual aid came from many area departments both to the fire and the covering.

Vernon Garage Fire Extends On March 7, 2015, Vernon firefighters responded to a garage fire on Rambling Road. Members arrived to heavy fire and smoke showing from the garage. Many feet of snow made this fire very labor intensive as access to all sides of the house was greatly restricted. Mutual aid from Tolland, Bolton, Ellington and Broad Brook assisted with manpower and tankers in this non-hydrant area. A tanker shuttle was set up at the end of the street to provide a constant water supply.

Harvard Square Apt. Fire On February 11, 2015, the Cambridge Fire Department, assisted by firefighters from several other departments, responded to a fire in a four-story brick-and-wood apartment building on Massachusetts Avenue, just outside of Harvard Square.

The fire extended upward throughout a portion of the building. One firefighter suffered minor injuries. The temperature at the time of the fire was in the low teens, and was just after a major snowstorm hit the Boston area.

Bridgewater State U Fire

New Haven 2-Alarmer

On February 25, 2015, the Bridgewater Fire Department responded to a reported fire at Hunt Hall, located on School Street, just a couple buildings away from fire department headquarters.

Companies found smoke coming from the rear of the building, and a moderate smoke condition inside. An East Bridgewater engine responded to the scene and a West Bridgewater engine to cover.

The building, a three-story brick, is operated by Bridgewater State University. The fire was started by some welding equipment located in the rear of the building. Smoke traveled through the vents.

The fire was quickly knocked down.

On March 4, 2015, New Haven firefighters responding to a report of a kitchen fire arrived to find a three-story wood frame with heavy fire on the first floor. The fire rapidly extended throughout the dwelling, prompting a second alarm to be transmitted by orders of Battalion Chief Gould. The blaze was brought under control in about 45 minutes. There was also evidence of a gas explosion on the number one side. Part of the first floor was heavily damaged and bowed out. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Electrical Fire in Great Barrington On March 11, 2015, crews from Great Barrington (MA) responded to a reported fire on North Plain Road. Lenox Engine 6 provided RIT, while Sheffield and Stockbridge were assigned station coverage. Southern Berkshire Ambulance was on standby, but no injuries were reported.

The fire appeared to be electrical in nature.

Not What is Meant by Firehouse On March 12, 2015, eight towns responded to a fire in an old firehouse converted to a residence. The firehouse was built in 1888 and contained many void spaces. The fire traveled in the walls to the attic where a well-placed vent was cut which aided in the extinguishing of the blaze.

Ammo Complicates Prospect Blaze On February 23, 2015, multiple calls began to flood Northwest (CT) Public Safety for fire coming from a residence on Williams Drive in Prospect. The first arriving command car verified heavy fire showing from all sides of a split-level dwelling. He also reported that there was live ammunition stored in the home and it was going off and all responding units were to take up an exterior attack. With a municipal water supply available at the beginning of the street, the first-due engine wrapped the hydrant and laid in the LDH to supply the scene. Crews were able to knock down the main body of fire in about 40 minutes but not before major

structural damage and the destruction of the resident’s extensive exotic animal trophy collection.

Andover House Fire

On March 11, 2015, firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire on Andover Street in Andover.

Westborough Garage Fire On March 8, 2015, Westborough (MA) companies were dispatched to Upton Road for a reported garage fire. C2 on arrival found a single-story detached garage fully involved. The first-due engine attacked the fire, protecting the rear of a nearby exposure. The second-due engine laid into the fire from the closest hydrant, which was some distance from the fire. Two mutual aid engines from Hopkinton and Northborough responded for manpower while Grafton covered the town.

The building quickly succumbed to the heavy amount of fire and collapsed. Ladder 1 used their ladder pipe after a water supply was established to wet down the smoldering heap.

LNG, Electricity Problems in Waterbury

On February 25, 2015, Waterbury Fire responded for a report of smoke coming from a building in the area of Boyden and Hanover Streets. Engine 6 arrived at the occupied multiple dwelling and found fire in the basement, possibly from an arcing electrical service, which was being fed by natural gas. Crews were unable to access the basement until the electricity was cut so they began searches of the upper floors where they found heavy fire extending through the wall of the balloon frame construction into the attic.

Truck 2 made a roof cut, releasing a large column of thick black smoke. As the fire continued to grow out of control, crews were ordered to evacuate and set up an exterior attack. With the power cut companies opened up on the fire, which had now consumed the upper floors, and were able to knock it down with multiple handlines, deckguns, and the monitor on Tower Ladder 2.

On March 13, 2015, a passing police officer alerted the dispatcher of a structure with smoke showing on Cabot Street. First units reported smoke showing.

Heavy fire traveled the upper floor and attic, but firefighters made a quick knockdown and transitioned over to overhaul in short order. Units were on the scene for several hours.

Fire Damages Vacant E. Providence House On March 9, 2015, East Providence firefighters responded to Ivy Street for a house fire. On arrival, Engine 5 found heavy fire showing from a 2-1/2 story vacant house. A second alarm was immediately struck and crews went to work. As companies entered the building, they found heavy fire on all floors from the basement to the attic. An interior attack was begun but conditions did not improve and incident commander ordered all companies to evacuate the building and performed a roll call. All members were accounted for and a ladder pipe and several lines were put into service. Once the heavy fire was knocked down, crews were sent back in to check for any hidden pockets of fire. Providence firefighters assisted East Providence on the scene and other cities provided station coverage.

4-Alarmer in Lowell

Shelton House Fire

On March 17, 2015 firefighters doused a four-alarm house fire encompassing two buildings on Varney Street in Lowell.

Recently, the Shelton (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Indian Well Road for a reported house fire. First arriving units found a heavily involved single-story home in what is known as the Maples community along the Housatonic River. Most of the fire was showing from the rear of the structure but was quickly consuming the home. After a quick exterior attack to knock down the heavy fire, members entered the structure. All occupants were out of the house at the time of the blaze except for the family dog, Harley, who was later located locked in his crate. The fire caused minor damage to both the B and D exposures and was reported to have been caused accidently by discarded ashes from a wood stove.

Cover Story

4 Three-Stories Burn

On February 27, 2015, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to Hanover Street for a reported fire in a heating unit. FC 1 arrived first reporting heavy fire showing from the second floor of a three-story wood frame and quickly spreading to the B and D exposures. The fire spread so rapidly it ended up involving four three-story multi-family homes on that street. In all, twelve families were displaced by the fire.

Grafton Commercial Blaze

Fire stuck a large irregular shaped commercial complex on Worcester Street in Grafton (MA) during a moderate snowstorm on March 2, 2015. The fire appeared to have started in a dry cleaners and spread to the attic space in the wood framed building. The first arriving companies reported heavy fire in the rear. The OIC then requested a second alarm due to the size and shape of the complex. A trench cut was performed to inspect for extension to the D side.

Companies found that trusses were added over the existing flat roof several years ago. A third alarm for staging was requested as a precaution. Companies contained the fire to the area of origin using a tower ladder and several handlines.

2 FFs Injured in Derby Blaze On January 26, 2015, the Derby Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire on Mount Pleasant Street. Companies responding to the scene reported a working fire from a distance due to the heavy fire showing from the home located on top of a large hill. When units arrived they found a duplex heavily involved on the left side apartment. Initial operations were difficult due to heavy winds and snow. Fortunately 10 people, a dog, and an iguana escaped from the structure without injury. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries.

Quick Knockdown in Windsor On March 24, 2015, Windsor firefighters responded to a working fire on Summit Drive in Windsor. They responded to calls reporting smoke from the vents and windows. On arrival they had a fire on the first floor extending upwards. Mutual aid from Blue Hills assisted at the scene and members were able to get a fast knockdown on the fire.

Fire Damages Coventry Home

On the night of February 4, 2015, Coventry (RI) firefighters were forced to overcome numerous obstacles in bringing a LaForge Drive fire under control. Cold temperatures and two feet of snow cover made hose stretches difficult at best and made for treacherous roof operations. As crews made their way inside the house and to the second floor, a series of explosions took place. It was reported that in excess of 3,000 rounds of ammunition was stored in the area of the fire and upon receiving this information, the incident commander ordered all firefighters to withdraw from the building and begin exterior operations. Once the heavy fire was knocked down from the outside, companies were allowed back inside to check for any remaining pockets of fire.

1 Injured at Manchester Blaze

On February 20, 2015, with sub zero wind chills the Manchester (CT) Fire Rescue EMS Department responded to Theresa Road for a report of an explosion and fire. On arrival the members had heavy smoke showing from the garage. One occupant was transported to the hospital and two cats were rescued. With the front walks not shoveled it created a challenge for the members to get a line in the front door. Mutual aid assisted at the scene and covered the MFRE stations.

North Attleboro Blaze On March 23, 2015, Engine 1 arrived to find smoke showing from the rear of a large 2-1/2 story, wood frame, occupied dwelling on Columbia Street in North Attleboro (MA). Heavy fire was found on the B/C corner around the electrical service, rapidly extending upwards through the balloon-framed structure. Companies were reporting high heat and deteriorating conditions on the upper floors as they conducted primary searches. Command requested a second alarm. Interior crews radioed that fire was extending upwards through the chases, voids and knee walls to the attic. Attleboro Ladder 1 began to open the roof over the seat of the fire but were pulled off of the roof before they could finished the cut due to the fire's progression below them. Command ordered the evacuation of the structure to go defensive operations. Two ladder pipes, several handlines, and a deck gun were used to bring this stubborn fire under control. A third alarm for station coverage was also struck.

3 Alarms in Grafton On March 23, 2015, Grafton (MA) fire crews battled a second fire of the day. The building was a lantern roof storage and garage structure. Due to an earlier fire there was multiple mutual aid towns available to respond to this fire. Multiple handlines and aerial devices were needed to bring the blaze under control.

Fire Destroys Warwick Apt. Building On March 11, 2015, Warwick Fire Alarm dispatched Engines 5, 9 and 1, Ladders 1 and 3, Special Hazards and Battalion 1 to the West Gate Condominiums on Quaker Lane. On arrival, Engine 5 found heavy fire showing from the rear of the large apartment complex. A second and third alarm was struck A supply line was laid, but promptly run over by a motorist. In doing so, the driver also broke the hydrant and left it inoperable. Companies found several other hydrants not working. Companies were forced to withdraw from the building until a positive water supply was established. Engines that did find operating hydrants reported little-to-no pressure. A tanker task force was requested, but took some time in getting to the scene. By this time, the fire had gained tremendous headway and was running the unprotected attic and spreading throughout the building. A defensive posture was taken and sections of the building began to collapse.

Warwick firefighters were able to get all of the residents out without injury but the building was a total loss.

Transfer Sta. Blaze in Dorchester

On March 25, 2015, firefighters responded to a fire at a transfer station in Dorchester. Four engines, two trucks and Rescue 2 responded to the scene under the command of District 7 Chief Erik Pettaway. On arrival, heavy smoke was coming from the doors of the steel clad building. Crews pulled their apparatus inside and knocked down a large smoldering pile of trash.

Quick Work in Watertown

Recently, Watertown volunteers received a call for smoke in a building on Wedgewood Drive. They arrived to find a heavy smoke condition as well as fire showing from the roof of a home at the base of a wooden flue pipe enclosure for the home’s furnace and wood stove. The fire had extended into the attic space and wall of a second floor room. Crews accessed the attic and opened the walls to get at the seat of the fire for a quick knock down. All occupants exited without incident and their quick actions saved the home from significant damage.

Glastonbury 2-Alarm

Glastonbury firefighters battled a 2-alarm residential structure fire on the brutally cold evening of February 23, 2015. Firefighters arrived around 1930 to find heavy fire showing from a home on Dogwood Lane. First-arriving E-41 negotiated their short-wheelbase conventional pumper down the long driveway which was

already constricted by high snow banks on either side. The combination of a deck gun and several large caliber hand lines proved effective in darkening down the heavy volume of fire within a half hour.

Shelton Car Fire On the night of February 22, 2015, Shelton (CT) Companies 1 and 4 were dispatched to the end of Joseph Court for a vehicle fire.

Due to a large snow and ice storm, access to the incident was extremely delayed. Streets in this area were almost completely undriveable and members had to walk to the scene from the engine, which struggled to make it close enough to stretch hose.

Pickup Burns in Cemetery On March 9, 2015, Dudley firefighters responded to a report of a fire in the Calvary Cemetery on Cemetery Road on the Dudley/Webster town line. Upon arrival, they found a newer model pick-up truck fully involved. One occupant of the truck was found shoeless, wrapped in a blanket, watching the vehicle burn. He stated that he tried to move the truck but got stuck in the snow. As he tried to rock the truck back and forth to free it, the vehicle caught fire. Dudley firefighters were hampered by half-plowed access ways into the cemetery, but it did not hinder a quick knock down. The occupant of the truck was transported to a local hospital by ambulance for evaluation of exposure injuries.

Lancaster MVA Requires Medevac

On March 24, 2015, the Lancaster Fire Department responded to a MVA on Route 2. The initial call reported a rollover with the occupant pinned in the vehicle. On arrival, firefighters found a box truck rolled with the driver pinned. Using hydraulic tools they were able to extricate him. Lifeflight helicopter was special called and landed on the highway and transported the driver with head injuries to the trauma center in Worcester.

Waterbury Fire crews were dispatched for a possible car in the water with extrication needed on Meriden Road. They arrived to find a car down an embankment just short of the water. The elderly driver ,who was suffering from an acute medical condition which caused him to loose control of his car, was still in the vehicle and required a rapid extraction. The car was stabilized and a rope system was rigged to bring the man up the grade in a Stokes basket and into the care of waiting EMS personnel.

Car Crashes Into Whitman Home On March 23, 2015, the Whitman Fire Department responded to a reported single-vehicle MVA in the area of Washington and Auburn Streets. Ambulance-247 and Engine-2 searched the area on Washington Street, but were unable to find anything. When crews traveled down Auburn Street, they noticed a car into a building on Washington Street. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time that emergency crews arrived. The reported occupants were inside the house when police were finally able to locate them. The occupants of the vehicle were not forthcoming with information, including who was actually behind the wheel during the crash. Ambulance-247 obtained one patient refusal at the scene.

Freon Leak Snow Collapses Brings Onset Building Haz-Mat Team

On the afternoon of March 9, 2015, Providence firefighters responded to the RI Blood Center, on Promenade Street for a possible freon leak. Engine 14 found the building evacuated and workers reporting that someone doing work in the area had broken a freon line. Battalion 3 arrived and requested the Hazardous Materials trailer to the scene and for all on-duty Haz-Mat technicians to respond. The leak was contained and the area ventilated.

Several workers were exposed and were checked out by Providence Rescue, but refused to be taken for treatment. The situation was brought under control within four minutes.

Early on March 4, 2015, the Onset Fire Department was in the area of Cranberry Highway investigating a strong odor of natural gas.

When crews arrived at the Cape and Islands Tire Company on Cranberry Highway, they found a wall blown out on the street side of the building. The OIC special requested the Bourne Tower to respond to the scene so the roof could be safely assessed. When they arrived it was noted that a significant portion of the roof had come down and was unstable. The Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team (PCTRT) was requested to the scene to evaluate the unoccupied structure.

NG Assists MA FDs

1 Saved from Arlington Blaze

The winter of 2015 will go down as one of the snowiest in history for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Record snowfall, including two blizzards within a month, sent municipalities scrambling to keep up with the several feet of snow that fell in such a short span of time. The town of Whitman, as well as many other cities and towns across the state, received help from the Massachusetts National Guard on February 11 and 12, 2015. Guardsmen worked for at least two days in Whitman assisting firefighters with clearing fire hydrants, and even assisting with clearing the roof of the Central Fire Station on Temple Street. Firefighters and residents alike would like to thank the Massachusetts National Guard troops who came out and assisted with the clearing of hydrants and all of the other work they performed.

On February 18, 2015, the Arlington (MA) Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire on Paul Revere Road. An aggressive interior attack confined the fire to a small portion of the attic. Firefighting operations were made very difficult by the nearly six feet of snow that had been dumped on the area over a 2-1/2 week period. One occupant was rescued from the structure.

Fifteen Horses Rescued from Collapsed Barn in Norwell

On March 2, 2015, the Norwell Fire Department was alerted to a collapse at the Jettset EnDevers Show Horses barn located on Main Street (Route 123).

Companies arrived to find a large barn housing horses with a significant collapse of the roof. The barn was occupied at the time of the collapse by 15 show horses. At least 10 of the horses were trapped in the debris, while five others were able to be assisted out prior to the arrival of specialized crews.

Shortly after the arrival of the Norwell Fire Department, the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team was requested for a full structural collapse response. The team, comprised of firefighters from across the county, responded with several trailers, including the structural collapse trailer housed in Bridgewater.

Technical rescue technicians from 15 communities, along with firefighters from Norwell, worked to free trapped animals stuck in their stalls on the sides of the barn. Some horses suffered minor injuries fol-

lowing, but none were serious. In addition to the PCTRT, several veterinarians responded to assist with sedating the horses.

Firefighters from Rockland also responded to the scene and served as the RIT team for Norwell firefighters working in the collapsed building.

Norwell Public Works crews assisted on-scene with snow removal and assisted with crews gaining access to parts of the exterior of the building. Police worked as crowd control and had Route 123 shut down to traffic due to the amount of rescue equipment that was needed on the scene.

Many of the horse owners came to the scene to retrieve their horses and check on their well-being. Several horse trailers lined Route 123, picking up the horses and bringing them to other barns to be boarded.

All of the trapped horses were freed, and the majority of the incident wrapped up within three hours. The cause of the collapse is attributed to record snow fall amounts that had been falling in the New England area throughout the winter. Several communities dealt with roof and building collapses due to the excessive snow fall.

PCTRT’s Annual Ice Dive Training

On March 26, 2015, the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team held their annual ice dive training at Camp Kiwanee, off of Route58 in Hanson. Twelve divers from the team participated, along with several dive tenders and support staff. Departments brought their dive and technical rescue equipment, including Abington's new dive and technical rescue trailer, and Bridgewater's newly renovated S-1, which houses the dive equipment. Kingston, Marshfield, Hanson and Duxbury also sent their dive vehicles and trailers. The training is held yearly to keep the team’s divers proficient with all types of conditions. Other dive training is held in moving water scenarios, rivers and the ocean.

11th Annual Firefighters Chili Challenge for MDA

On March 1, 2015, the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center was transformed into the chili capital of Massachusetts, to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Seventeen teams, made up of local firefighters, tried their hand at winning the prestigious awards of Chef’s Cup, People’s Choice, Hottest Chili, and Best Display.

Attendees made a $15 donation and received unlimited chili, and non-stop live music from the bands Shattered, Afterthought, Chaindrive, Halligan’s and The Apollo Principle. There were also raffles and a cash bar. Each person got a ballot for the People’s Choice, Hottest Chili, and Best Display. The ballots were then tabulated on-site by an independent third party. The Chef’s Cup award was selected by a group of chefs who conduct a blind taste test.

This year the team from Wareham Fire won the People’s Choice award. The Chef’s Cup was awarded to the team from Shrewsbury Fire. The Hottest Chili award went to the team from Blackstone Fire. Finally, the award for best display went to Team Backdraft from Eastham Fire.

An estimated 1,000 people packed the convention hall to taste the many different kinds of chili, and enjoy the bands and festivities. This event is held every year to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The event committee, responsible for the event, consists of Matt Mills from the Hyannis Fire Department, Chris Shute from the Mashpee FD, Chris Read from the Yarmouth FD, Briana Littlefield from MDA, and Matty B from local radio station Pixy 103. This year, more than $20,000 was raised for MDA. The MDA and firefighters, specifically the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), have had a long history, dating back to 1954.

The IAFF is the greatest contributor to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, raising a record breaking $23.5 million in 2006 alone.

MDA is committed to worldwide research efforts and programs to help eradicate 40 neuromuscular diseases, and assist those who suffer the effects of neuromuscular diseases every day. The IAFF has raised more than $275 million for MDA since 1954.

Hanson Lieutenant Keith Wilson Sworn In On February 24, 2015, the Hanson Fire Department held a swearing-in ceremony for their newest officer, Lieutenant Keith Wilson.

Lieutenant Wilson was sworn-in by the town clerk at Hanson’s Selectmen’s Meeting held at Town Hall.

Dozens of Wilson’s friends and family attended.

Firefighters both present and retired from Hanson, Braintree, Pembroke and Whitman were also on hand.

Lieutenant Wilson’s wife, Melissa, and their daughter Brenna, 11, watched as the couple’s son Mitch, 10, pinned the badge on his father’s chest following the swearing-in. Wilson thanked them, in a brief statement for all their help and understanding while he spent many long months studying for the exam.

Wilson has been a firefighter in the Town of Hanson for over 14 years. He came to Hanson following a seven-year run working for Boston EMS. Wilson took over as Lieutenant for B-Shift in Hanson on January 28, 2015, following the retirement of Lieutenant Paul Proudman.

Lieutenant Wilson is also the EMS Officer for the Hanson Fire Department. Chief Jerry Thompson lauded him for being instrumental with getting advanced life support ambulance service to the residents of the town. Lieutenant Wilson is also owner of the Comprehensive Medical Teaching Institute, Inc., which instructs EMT and Paramedic students, as well as offering continuing education and medical certification courses - Fire News photo by Pat Travers

Hundreds of FFs Participate in Fight For Air Climb On February 7, 2015, hundreds of firefighters from across New England and as far away as Memphis, Tennessee, flocked to One Boston Place in downtown Boston to climb 41-floors to raise money for the American Lung Association.

The 10th Annual Race Up Boston Place held by the American Lung Association is a unique fundraiser that is essentially a vertical road race.

Individual and team participants raise money for the American Lung Association, and then climb the 41-floors up to the top of One Boston Place.

Four hundred and fifty eight male firefighters from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont and Tennessee; and 41 female firefighters, raised money and climbed the 41 floors in Boston.

The fastest recorded time this year went to 35-year old Portland (ME) Firefighter Ryan Thomson, who climbed up in six minutes and 53 seconds. The fastest woman firefighter was Firefighter Jacqueline Palmer from Team 4th Alarm who climbed the 41 floors in eight minutes and 16 seconds. Firefighters climbed in full turnout gear, including an air pack.

A total of $439,540 was raised by competitors this year, just shy of the $500,000 goal set for 2015.

The Worcester Bravehearts baseball team decorated the truck for the parade. They are a Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL), a wood-bat summer collegiate baseball league. The team mascot being Jake, the term used for good firefighter.

Nichols FD’s Plofkin, Piccirillo Honored

On February 7, 2015, the Nichols Fire Department honored John Plofkin, Jr., and Pastor Joseph Piccirillo at the Trumbull Marriott.

The two were being celebrated for their dedication and years of service to the department. John joined the department in 1980 and moved through the ranks, serving as Chief of the Department from 2011 to 2013. Joseph, known as ‘PJ,’ joined the department in 2002

and served as Chaplain. He also began training to become an active firefighter, becoming FF1, FF2, and later Apparatus Driver/Pump Operator certified. Members from the departments of surrounding towns— Monroe, Shelton, and Bridgeport to name a few— came to honor these two members.

Firehouse Kitchen

By Ray Cooney This month I invited two guests to the Bayport Firehouse to cook on the show.

New Jersey Firefighter Rob Papparo and Rochester, New York, Firefighter Ava Liebowitz. They e-mailed me about a very cool organization they are a part of, called 5-5-5 Fitness. This name was derived from part of the code used to alert others that we have had a death of a firefighter and this is always a reminder to keep yourself fit. Their website 555fitness.com is focused on firefighter fitness, exercise and healthy meals. The number one killer of firefighters is heart disease.

This website strives to help ensure and encourage a healthier firefighter way of life.

When I first met them, I was taken back. ‘Pip,’ a.k.a. Firefighter Papparo, showed up with a crazy haircut and a constant smile from ear to ear. Ava is a tall, attractive blond fitness model (on the side) who would look out of place in most firehouses. We made a stuffed pepper meal that was healthy as well as delicious.

Usually when cooking with me, if it was going to be delicious, it sure wasn’t going to be healthy! The bacon and butter I love to use were missing, yet, the taste was out of this world.

After we prepared the peppers and placed them in the oven, we had some time to kill while they were cooking. We went down to the apparatus floor and went to work on one of their fitness regimens. The 5-5-5 Fitness program utilizes fire fighting equipment in its exercise routines. This makes the program conducive to firemen while at work. There is no more excuse of, “I don’t have the proper equipment to work out.” Squats with a section of hose on your back and pulling a Stokes basket filled with tools are just two examples of the exercises we performed. While performing this workout, I quickly realized that all the cooking and eating, during the filming of these shows did not help my waistline or stamina! I made a bet with Pip that I would be 30 pounds lighter next season, after following his regimen.

HEALTHY PEPPERS 4 Bell peppers (tops cut off, stemmed, seeded. Also cut just a little off the bottom, to create a flat surface keeping the peppers upright ) 1/2 lb ground turkey 1 small can of black beans (drained and rinsed) Small bag of frozen corn 1/2 onion chopped 1 jar of salsa Small can of tomato sauce Small can of sliced green olives (optional) Package of taco seasoning Salt and pepper to taste Handful of Cilantro, chopped 1 bag of shredded lite Mexican cheese blend Preheat oven to 350. In a skillet, saute onions in a drizzle of olive oil and taco seasoning. Add ground turkey and brown. Add the black beans, green olives, 1/2 bag of corn, 1/2 of the jar of salsa and 1/2 of the chopped cilantro. Stuff the peppers tightly with the turkey mixture (there may be a little extra) and add a sprinkle of cheese on top. In a baking dish, pour in the tomato sauce and remaining salsa. Place the peppers in the baking dish, being careful to keep them upright. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, remove from oven. Spoon some of the tomato sauce from the pan over the peppers, garnish with cilantro and serve.

911PROGRAMS FIRE TRAINING DIVISION ON-SITE TRAINING AT THE NEW ENGLAND FIRE CHIEFS EXPO: Tactical Use of Webbing

The Lead Instructor is Lieutenant Rob Cembor of the Warwick Fire Department (Rhode Island).

Most firefighters carry webbing in their gear, but not all firefighters know the many ways in which it can be used. This class will teach participants how to use webbing in various ways on the fireground and in rescue situations. Lt. Cembor will begin the class with a traditional PowerPoint presentation and a group discussion to illustrate the many ways that webbing can be used, the widths and lengths of webbing for various applications, and how it can be carried by firefighters. Participants will then be divided into groups to practice specific webbing-related evolutions including knots (i.e. water knot, overhand knot, etc.), anchors (i.e. W3P2, W2P1, etc.), securing victims in Stokes litters, drags and carries, connecting and raising equipment, hauling and moving hoselines, and more.

This class is approximately three-hours long and will be presented in the morning and again in the afternoon. The cost of the class is $25 per person, per session. No turnout gear is required.
