Thank You to the John Feal Foundation Whenever I met Ray Pfeifer, I’d ask him how he was doing. He always responded to me by saying, “Not bad for a guy with Stage 4 cancer.” I never knew if I should laugh, smile or cry as we compared notes about our cancers.

After a short conversation, Ray would give me what I coined the Ray Pfeifer Smile and I would snap his photograph. I learned about Ray’s passion for all 9/11 responders when I talked with him and followed him leaving the quarters of Engine 311 and Ladder 158 in Queens with the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, to bring a piece of cherished WTC steel to Colorado. Yes, Ray was certainly in his element. I could feel the angels that tagged along with us as we headed to the GWB. When Ray passed, I attended his funeral and briefly shared a handshake with John Feal. I offered him my thanks for his dedication and commitment to all responders from September 11, 2001. From his handshake, I knew John Feal, like Ray, was a passionate individual who was going to continue to protect the first responders who were stricken with various cancers as a result of doing their job, searching for the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy.

Over the past few weeks, I intently watched a devoted team of first responders walk the halls in Washington, DC, to fight so that all responders stricken with 9/11 cancers are taken care of. I watched Detective Lou Alvarez speak with Congress and urge his listeners not to

abandon the Victims Compensation Fund. I only hope that Lou’s voice haunts Capitol Hill and everyone can hear clearly as Detective Alvarez reminds our political leaders to, “Do the right thing!”

At Detective Alvarez’s funeral NYPD Police Commissioner said it best, “I’ll tell you this. We can thank God for Lou Alvarez, who stepped forward to make that demand on behalf of every citizen and resident of our country.”

Recently, my eyes popped out of my head when our future Presidential candidates quickly and unanimously raised their hands in support of giving health insurance to individuals who are not legally in the United States. Trust me, I am a caring person who believes in humaneness. However, I strongly believe that we must help the people that live in this country and work hard. Our citizens are the people who continue to make the United States a great place to live. Our 9/11 responders are the people who — without question — need the unanimous support of our political leaders.

Responders who have given their all, deserve the unconditional support of Capitol Hill.

I thank John Feal, Jon Stewart, Kenny Specht, Mike O’Connell, Rob Serra — to name a few — for their relentless push down the hallway to make sure no one forgets those who responded to the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

To quote John Feal, “Friends — Change is

coming! Legacies will be cemented! And tens of thousands will be helped one more time! For you Ray and Lou! Stay tuned!”

Update: On July 12, 2019, the House of Representatives voted to reauthorize a fund that compensates victims of 9/11 and their families.

Thank you to all who supported this bill.

- Dennis Update: On July 23, 2019, at 1543, it was announced that the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund will be funded until 2092 with only two senators voting no: Senators Paul and Lee. A huge thanks goes to the FealGood Foundation for all their hard work and dedication. Thanks also to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting both battles (Zadroga and VCF) while they were actively fighting cancer. This fight was led by those heroes, not only for first responders, but anyone who entered the affected areas when told it was safe.

Announcements NFFF NATIONAL MEMORIAL WEEKEND

BBQ FOR THE BLUE COUNTRY CONCERT

Every October, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, the official national tribute to those firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year.

This year’s Memorial Weekend will be held October 5 and 6, 2019, in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The weekend includes specialized activities for family members and culminates with a Memorial Service on Sunday morning. Thousands attend the programs and services each year.

On Saturday evening, October 5, the families of the fallen gather for a Candlelight Service while landmarks across the country participate in “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters.” This nation-wide landmark lighting event honors firefighters who died in the line of duty. Last year, some of the most iconic buildings and bridges, as well as over 100 fire departments across the country, participated in honoring our fallen. They included: One World Trade Center in New York City, the Bank of America Plaza in Dallas, the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, and the Willis Tower in Chicago.

Lightings of buildings and fire department in red during the Candlelight Service on October 5, or any time during that week, would be an additional symbol of support and comfort to the families whose loved ones are being remembered. Suffolk County’s Country radio station 96.1 MY Country (WJVC) will host BBQ 4 The Blue on Sunday, August 25, 2019, at the brand new Chalet Plaza on the grounds of the Long Island Community Hospital Amphitheater at Bald Hill. This food vendor and music festival is open to everyone and starts at Noon.

The event is a day for everyone to celebrate and salute those who respond daily to emergencies and keep us safe Long Island’s members of Law Enforcement and will feature music, family activities, food, beverages, vendor booths, emergency apparatus displays, and much more!

Tickets are only $25 and a portion of every ticket sold will go directly to Brotherhood of the Fallen of Suffolk County, a not-for-profit group that relies on donations and membership driven fundraisers to cover travel costs associated with sending police officers to funerals across the country and they present the family of the fallen a monetary donation to help supplement income during the initial painful and chaotic time following each tragedy.

The days performers include 96.1 My Country’s own DJ Deuce, Long Island native Gina Mingoia — whose late father served in the SCPD, the band LANCO, and Country music superstar Michael Ray. There will also be a live broadcast all day on JVC Radio station LI News 103.9 with Tom Shiliro.

Selden Shed Fire Extends The Selden Fire Department was activated on June 22, 2019, for a shed fire on Whitmore Lane. The shed was fully involved with extension to the home on arrival. Mutual aid came from Centereach, Terryville and Coram. PSEG and National Grid were requested to the scene.

Holbrook Car Fire On July 4, 2019, the Holbrook Fire Department was activated for a reported vehicle fire on the westbound portion of Sunrise Highway between Broadway and Lincoln Avenues. Upon arrival, commanding units were met with a fully involved auto and advised incoming units. The first-due crew of Engine 6 made a quick knockdown of the fire without further incident. No injuries were reported.

Hydrant Problems at Old Brookville Blaze

Late on June 21, 2019, the Glenwood Fire Company was called to a house fire in the dead end of Stonegate Lane off Valentines Lane in the Old Brookville section. Firefighters were met with fire showing from a large two-story private dwelling with all occupants out of the house. As firefighters began an interior attack, they encountered water problems at the hydrant and, as a result, fire conditions intensified forcing firefighters to turn to an exterior operation. The fire went on to reach a multi-alarm status bringing in mutual aid from Bayville, East Norwich, Glen Cove, Locust Valley, Oyster Bay, Roslyn, Sea Cliff and Port Washington. The scene was placed under control approximately three hours into the operation.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

East Brentwood Home Gutted

On June 18, 2019, the East Brentwood Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Bushwick Avenue. Dispatch was getting multiple calls from neighbors reporting smoke and flames visible. Upon arrival, commanding units requested mutual aid from Brentwood and Central Islip. Operations were kept exterior-only due to conditions. The blaze completely gutted the home.

No injuries were reported. Command requested a fire marshal and arson squad to the scene for an investigation.

East Norwich House Fire

The East Norwich Fire Department battled a house fire on Northern Boulevard on June 19, 2019. Heavy fire was showing at the front door as engine companies made their initial attack. Mutual aid companies from Oyster Bay, Sea Cliff, Locust Valley, Glen Cove, Glenwood and Port Washington responded.

Westhampton Beach House Fire The Westhampton Beach Fire Department was called out for a structure fire in the 700 block of Dune Road on May 27, 2019. At the time of the call some volunteers were at the Gabreski Airport participating in a hose drill. While smoke was visible on the southeast corner of the unoccupied residence firefighters encountered no fire on the first floor. A subsequent search of the basement level revealed heavy smoke and a fire in that area. The hose team quickly knocked down the fire. Mutual aid came from Eastport, Quogue, East Moriches and Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance.

North Massapequa House Fire

The North Massapequa Fire Department was called to a house fire on Garden Avenue just before 2330 on June 19, 2019. Command arrived to heavy fire showing from the exposure 2 side of the house which was spreading to the exposure 3 side of the neighboring house. There were multiple propane tanks also involved causing two to blow. Engines 665, 662 and 663 operated three lines to bring the fire under control in about 40 minutes. The crew from Ladder 661, laddered, vented and searched. Mutual aid was provided by Seaford, Massapequa, South Farmingdale, Wantagh and Levittown, while North Bellmore, Farmingdale and Bethpage stood by.

Collapse at Central Islip Fire

The Central Islip Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire on Violet Street at 0035 on June 23, 2019. Chief of Department Patrick Murphy arrived and reported a fully involved residence at that location. Fire in the attached garage had extended rapidly into the living quarters of the home resulting in heavy fire damage throughout, and also resulted in a partial roof collapse. Chief Murphy requested mutual aid from Hauppauge, Islip Terrace and East Islip. In addition, the Suffolk County Arson Squad, Islip Town Fire Marshall’s Office, Suffolk County Fire Coordinators, and the Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance Company responded. Operations concluded at 0307.

Bethpage Makes Quick Stop On May 26, 2019, the Bethpage Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Grohmans Lane in Plainview. Smoke was showing from an attached garage of a two-story home. Engine 9044 secured a water supply while stretching a line to the rear of the garage and an additional line to the front door. The fire was quickly knocked down and did not extend into the house.

Head of the Harbor House Fire The St. James Fire Department responded to a house fire on Three Sisters Road in Head of the Harbor on June 15, 2019. Units discovered fire in a room of the two-story ranch. Collyer’s Mansion conditions existed throughout the residence making searches and overhaul tedious. Mutual aid came from Nesconset and Smithtown with Nissequogue and Stony Brook on standby. The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes.

Vacant Home Fire in Hagerman On the morning of June 17, 2019, the Hagerman Fire Department was activated for a structure fire on Americus Avenue. Units were met with smoke showing from the rear of a boarded up home. Mutual aid was brought in from Bellport, North Patchogue and South Country Ambulance. First-due crews forced entry and quickly extinguished the fire without further incident.

No injuries were reported. Command requested a fire marshal to the scene for an investigation.

1 Hurt at Hicksville House Fire

On May 2, 2019, the Hicksville Fire Department was activated for a house fire on Ketcham Avenue. Commanding units were met with smoke showing and visible fire from the second floor and advised units of Collyer’s Mansion conditions. Mutual aid was provided by

Planview, Bethpage and Syosset. The fire was quickly knocked down and one victim was transported to a nearby hospital with CPR in progress. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Freeport Kitchen Fire

The Freeport Fire Department battled a fire in the kitchen of a private dwelling on Sweezy Avenue on June 22, 2019. Two handlines were stretched but only one was needed to extinguish the blaze. Village police and county EMS were on the scene to assist the occupant of the home.

Restaurant Electrical Fire The West Babylon Fire Department was called to a fire at the Wendy’s Restaurant on Montauk Highway about 2030 on July 4, 2019. Chief of Department Schumann arrived to find the building filled with smoke and all the employees outside uninjured. Assistant Chiefs Vergano and Kamalic arrived and handled the fire attack. Engine 1-9-2 picked up a hydrant and Ladder 1-9-4 set up at the rear of the building.

Engine crews stretched two lines from 1-9-2 while the crew from 1-9-4 ad Heavy Rescue 1-9-15 opened up the burning section of the building and secured the power to the building, as the fire appeared to be electrical in nature. The fire was located in the soffits and was spreading to the roof, It took about 40 minutes to extinguish and bring it under control.

North Bellmore House Fire

Late on July 9, 2019, the North Bellmore Fire Department was called to a house fire on Forest Avenue off Hilda Street. North Bellmore Engine 656 arrived to smoke showing from a vacant private dwelling. Firefighters put two handlines into operation to fight the fire which was on the first and second floor of the home.

Among the departments called for mutual aid were East Meadow, Wantagh and Bellmore. The cause of the fire was under investigation and all units were under the command of North Bellmore Chief of Department Narell.

Cutchogue Responds to Braun’s Seafood Fire

At 0300 on June 12, 2019, the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched for an automatic commercial fire alarm at the Braun Oyster and Seafood Company located on the Main Road in Cutchogue. Chief Tom Shalvey, Jr., and his assistant chiefs, immediately noticed large amounts of smoke coming from the building with flames becoming visible at the rear. Firefighters gained entry to building and discovered heavy smoke and flames throughout. Handlines and a deck gun were placed into service in order to protect exposures. Multiple water supplies had to be established and additional resources were requested from Mattituck, Jamesport, Southold and East Marion. Riverhead and Greenport provided stand-by coverage. The fire was contained to the warehouse portion of the business, and was prevented from spreading to the office, retail and kitchen spaces.

Huntington Manor Hits House Fire

The Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to a house fire on Ruby Lane on June 23, 2019. Manor crews made a fast attack on the blaze which was quickly contained and under control within a half hour. Mutual aid came from Melville, Dix Hills, Huntington and Huntington Community First Aid Squad. There were no

injuries reported and the Huntington Town Fire Marshal and Suffolk Police Arson Squad were investigating. Units were under the command of Chief Jon Hoffmann and Assistant Chiefs Chuck Brady and Jim Glidden. Suffolk FRES Coordinators were also on the scene.

Been Here, Done That

Multiple fire departments from Nassau and Suffolk counties responded to a building fire at Elite Industries on West Ames Court in Plainview on July 15, 2019. A fire was reported in a spray booth with extension to the roof.

All of the employees were accounted for as crews battled the fire. The cause was under investigation. There have been numerous fires in this building over the past year.

House Fire in Ronkonkoma

On July 7, 2019, a little after midnight, the Ronkonkoma Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire on Knickerbocker Avenue. Upon the arrival of the chief, active fire was found coming through the roof of the structure. Multiple fire departments were called to the scene to bring the fire under control.

Hewlett Second-Floor Fire

The Hewlett Fire Department responded to multiple calls for a house fire on Crystal Court on the evening of June 28, 2019. Arriving companies were met with heavy fire conditions on the second floor of the two-

story home. Lines were put into operation and truck crews searched and vented. No serious injuries were reported.

Suspicious Blaze in Copiague

The Copiague Fire Department responded to a fire at a home on Baylawn Avenue about 2345 on July 3, 2019. Units arrived to a single-story detached garage fully involved. Engine 1-3-10 was followed in by Engine 1-3-5 and Heavy Rescue 1-3-3. The engine crews stretched and operated two lines and had the fire knocked down and under control in about 30 minutes. The home was reported to be vacant and the fire was deemed suspicious and under investigation.

East Hampton Restaurant Fire

Members of the East Hampton Fire Department were called to extinguish a small fire in the exhaust ductwork of the popular Villa Italian store on Railroad Avenue in East Hampton on July 7, 2019. under the command of Chief Gerard Turza, Jr. The fire was located via a small roof cut and extinguished without incident, and a member of the East Hampton Town Fire Marshal’s office was on scene investigating. Fortunately, damage was minimal, and the business was able to reopen three days later.

Truck Fire on the SOB April 11, 2019, at 2319 hours the Plainview and Syosset fire departments were alerted for a truck fire on the northbound Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway.

LIE Service Rd. Car Fire On May 24, 2019, at 0421, the Syosset Fire Department received multiple phone alarms for a vehicle fire in the vicinity of the LIE Service Road. Plainview and Jericho were also alerted. The car fire was found on Angel Way Service Road to the LIE off of Woodbury Road. .

Bethpage Motel Fire

In the early morning of June 28, 2019, firefighters operated at a fire at the Bethpage Motel on Hempstead Turnpike. The fire was in a room on the second floor and appeared to have spread when a mattress was removed from the fire room and placed outside. Firefighters put a handline into operation and quickly knocked down the main body of fire. Among the departments called to assist were Farmingdale, South Farmingdale and Wantagh. The scene was placed under control within 25 minutes and the cause was under investigation. At least one civilian sustained burns and all fire department units were under the command of Bethpage Assistant Chief Isernia.

Quick Knockdown in Bay Shore In the early morning of June 30, 2019, the Bay Shore Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Peters Boulevard. Command units were met with heavy fire showing from the second floor and mutual aid was brought in from Islip, East Islip and Islip Terrace. Crews made an aggressive attack and a quick knockdown of the fire. No injuries were reported. The arson squad and fire marshal responded for an investigation.

New Cassel Shop Fire

On June 15, 2019, at 2052, the Westbury Fire Department was alerted for a building fire on Prospect Avenue in New Cassel. Units arrived to smoke showing and roll-up security grates over all the doors and

windows. Hicksville and Jericho also responded. A fire in the New Market store was extinguished with no injuries reported.

1 Dead at Hauppauge House Fire

The Hauppauge Fire Department responded to a house fire on Grissom Way in Hauppauge at 2250 on June 26, 2019. Crews arrived to a large colonial home engulfed in flames. 2 Into the Woods at Holtsville 3-Car On June 18, 2019, the Holtsville and Farmingville fire departments were activated for a heavy rescue MVA at the intersection of Express Drive North and Blue Point Road. Command units were met with a three-car MVA with two of the three cars into the woods. Farmingville command advised all incoming units of negative entrapment. The crews of both Farmingville Rescue 8 and Holtsville Rescue 4 secured all involved vehicles.

Mineola Car into Building The Mineola Fire Department responded to a car into a building on Old Country Road near Holly Avenue on the evening of June 27, 2019. A sedan left the roadway and plowed into the front of a nearby office building.

Into Building, Wires Down and More On July 9, 2019, the Holtsville Fire Department was activated for an MVA with a vehicle into a building with entrapment, wires down, and a large fuel spill.

Second Assistant Chief Doug Costello was met with a pickup truck into a warehouse and advised incoming units of negative entrapment. Rescue 4 secured the involved vehicle. Command requested a building inspector and mutual aid from Holbrook and Farmingville for ambulances. Three patients were transported to area hospitals for their injuries.

Overturn on SSP Lakeview firefighters responded to a reported overturned vehicle on Southern State Parkway east of Exit 17 on afternoon of July 3, 2019. The SUV landed in the grassy area and off the roadway. The driver was able to crawl out of his vehicle and was not injured. He was checked out by a passing North Shore University Hospital ambulance. It was the opinion of firefighters that the vehicle most likely flipped about five times before landing on its side. Traffic was not disrupted.

Valley Stream Overturn

Valley Stream firefighters and Nassau County police officers responded to a reported overturned vehicle with injuries on Merrick Road at the corner of Hicks Street in Valley Stream on June 28, 2019. An SUV with two occupants slammed into a tree at the driveway entrance of a group of stores and overturned. The force of the crash sheared off part of the front axle and a front tire.

The tire was sent flying and struck a pedestrian walking on the street. The two car occupants were not seriously hurt and were transported to the hospital in Nassau County Police Ambulances.

The pedestrian, more seriously hurt, was transported across Merrick Road to the Valley Stream pool parking lot where a Nassau County Police helicopter flew the injured pedestrian to Nassau University Medical Center.

3 Hurt at Bethpage MVA On June 17, 2019, the Bethpage and North Massapequa fire departments were alerted for and MVA with overturn and pin on the Bethpage State Parkway by Boundary Avenue. LIE Single-Car MVA On July 6, 2019, at 2335, the driver and passenger of a sedan were injured after crashing into the center median on the eastbound Long Island Expressway by South Oyster Bay Road in Syosset. The single-car accident closed two lanes while Syosset firefighters, EMS and Nassau County Police Highway units worked at the scene. The injured were taken to Nassau University Medical Center with unknown injuries.

Huntington Manor Handles Heavy Rescue

Haz-Mat Incident in Hempstead Several people were transported to area hospitals while several others received medical attention at the scene of a hazardous material incident at a Hempstead apartment house on the afternoon of July 8, 2019. Firefighters and police were called to West Columbia Street near Washington Avenue just before 1300 for residents feeling dizzy and smelling a strange odor. Nassau County Hazardous Materials units were called to the scene to investigate. Initial reports stated that a cleaning solution may have been the cause of the problem.

By Richard C. Maddox EMT, RN, MPA Past Chairman Fire Department Safety Officers Association According to the International Association of Firefighters, “Cancer has now surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death among firefighters.” — January 11, 2019.

New York State has come to recognize cancer among firefighters is directly linked to the off-gassing of the products of combustion and those products remaining on our of personal protective equipment (PPE). This article will focus on one aspect of the prevention of toxic exposure in your department and developing applicable policies and procedures to effectively decon our firefighters PPE. Cancer in the fire service is another hazard of our vocation We as firefighters are 2.2 times more likely to get cancer than the general population. Prevention, by cleaning our PPE, after a fire, and using simple baby wipes to clean off our face and neck area will help reduce the many cancer-causing products we come in contact with at every fire we encounter.

Contaminated PPE continues to give off harmful gasses for up to four hours after a fire. Improper storage, i.e. inside apparatus or personally owned vehicles exposes us to those gasses. Decon is necessary not just after structure fires, but any smoky fire such as vehicle fires, dumpster fires, or other fires involving man-made products.

To reduce firefighter exposure to the products of combustion for extended periods of time, each department should provide firefighters with training and education on the importance to properly protect themCompared to the general population, firefighters are at a much higher risk for: Testicular cancer (2.02 times greater); Multiple myeloma (1.53 times); Non-Hodkins lymphoma (1.51 times); Skin Cancer (1.39 times); Prostate cancer (1.28 times); Malignant melanoma (1.31 times); Brain cancer (1.31 times); Colon cancer (1.21 times); Leukemia ( 1.14 times); Breast cancer in women (preliminary study results from San Francisco FD) From the Firefighter Cancer Support Network selves. We cannot underestimate the importance of reducing the products of combustion from firefighters and their PPE. The department should set up policies and procedures to ensure that members follow them on a daily basis. These policies and procedures should be evaluated frequently to make sure that they are working, since members lives may literally depend on them.

After the alarm and it is determined members have been exposed to the products of combustion from man-made products, a decon area should be set-up in a safe area and prepared for cleaning PPE. Using a scrub brush and soapy water, wash the PPE while firefighters are still wearing it, then rinse it with clean water. SCBAs should be washed before being put back on the apparatus. After the member has been washed and rinsed from head to toe, have the member doff the PPE. Follow up with using baby wipes around the head and neck area (two top areas of firefighter cancer diagnosis), paying attention to amount of contaminates that have accumulated on the wipes. After cleaning from the decontamination line, the PPE should be thoroughly cleaned according to manufacturer’s instructions, or the referenced NFPA Standard, and dried. Finally, remind the members that they should shower and don clean clothes after each fire.

Educate yourself, and your membership of the dangers that we all face everyday, so that we can all go home. “STAY SAFE OUT THERE” SAFETY OUT. Next month we will discuss simple decon ideas other departments have instituted to provide safe efficient methods to get the job done. **** Richard C. Wrong Way Head-on in North Babylon On the morning of June 16, 2019, the North Babylon Fire Company was alerted for an MVA on the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway near Deer Park Avenue. Chief of Department Harrington was advised the accident was involving a wrong-way driver. The driver of a sedan suffered a medical emergency and somehow got on the highway traveling west in the eastbound lanes and struck a pickup truck head on.

The collision knocked a wheel off the truck which hit another vehicle. The driver of the sedan was the only one injured in the accident and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital by Ambulance 1-8-14.

3 Hurt in Hempstead MVA The Hempstead Fire Department was on the scene after a pickup truck was split in half and at least three people were injured in a collision on a rainy June 13, 2019. The accident occurred at the intersection of Henry Street and Jerusalem Avenue and involved an SUV and a pickup truck. The impact of the crash drove the truck into two nearby utility poles and split the vehicle in two. At least three occupants of the SUV were injured and transported to area hospitals by ambulance.

MC Accident in Brookhaven On July 13, 2019, the Selden Fire Department was activated for a reported motorcycle versus vehicle MVA on County Road 83 near the Viet Nam War monument. Medics were met with a motorcyclist down, single-vehicle MVA and advised incoming units. The patient was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for his injuries via a Selden Ambulance.

6 Teens injured in Copiague MVA The Copiague Fire Department was alerted for an MVA with overturn on Lake Drive at Park Place about noon on June 17, 2019. The driver of a small SUV reportedly hit a pot hole at high speed and lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturn. There were six high school age teenagers in the vehicle at the time and all were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital by Ambulances 1-3-1, 1-3-2 and Amityville Ambulance 1-1-12. Heavy Rescue 1-3-3 also responded and its crew secured the vehicle and handled a fluid spill.

Holtsville, Farmingville Honor Stillufsen for His Service On July 13, 2019, members of Holtsville and Farmingville departments gathered at Holtsville’s headquarters on Waverly Avenue to celebrate 50 years of service from ex-Chief and Commissioner Roy Stillufsen. Roy was sworn into the Holtsville-Farmingville Fire Department on July 12, 1969. He served as Chief of the Holtsville Fire Department in 1980 and 1981. Roy has also been a commissioner for the past 25 years and is still very active with the fire police. After a few short words from Holtsville’s current Chief Neal Harris, Roy was presented a plaque from the New York State Volunteer Fire Police Association’s President Frank Guarino. Congrats to ex-Chief Roy Stillufsen, and thank you for your dedicated service.

Dix Hills Dedicates New Firehouse The Dix Hills Fire Department dedicated its new Company Two firehouse with a public ribbon cutting ceremony on June 30, 2019. The new firehouse is located on East Deer Park Road, adjacent to headquarters. Following the ceremony, the Dix Hills Fire District hosted a community barbeque as well as tours of the new facility. The new building is outfitted with two fire engines, an ambulance and several other vehicles along with a new bunk room.

Huntington Chiefs Council Presents Scholarships The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs Council recently presented their annual Scholarship Awards to students affiliated with the town fire and rescue services. Council 1st Vice-President Chuck Brady presented the scholarships to: Brooke Geffken of Centerport, who is attending Towson University; Ryan Tschirhart of Eaton’s Neck, who is attending the University of Albany; James Willis of Halesite, who is attending SUNY Maritime College; Erik Cetta-Friedrich of East Northport, who is attending SUNY Plattsburg; Mikayla Batkiewicz of Dix Hills, who is attending the University of Central Florida; Michael Ervin of East Northpor, who is attending Pace University; and Steven Fischer of Dix Hills, who is attending Farmingdale College.

Flanders Rig Found Recently, Peter Matthews, conference director and Editor-in-Chief of Firehouse, stumbled upon this tanker as he was passing the Fort Pike Volunteer Fire Department. Oceanside Save Awards On the evening of May 15, 2019, the Oceanside Fire Department hosted a department award ceremony at the Merle Avenue School across from Oceanside headquarters. The event was held to honor department members who were instrumental in saving lives and property over the past few years — in some instances the lives and property of their fellow members. East Northport’s Bill Faltin Honored for 50 Years of Service

The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs Council and Suffolk County Fire Chiefs Council both recognized ex-Chief Bill Faltin for his 50 years of active and dedicated service with East Northport Fire Department and his dedication to the volunteer fire and rescue service. Faltin served as Chief from 1981 to 1983 and was the recipient of the Company One Achievement Award in 2012, where he served as Lieutenant and Captain in the 1970s. He also was the recipient of the James Niemczyk Memorial Award twice in 2010 and 2016. Faltin was the Dinner Committee Chairman for Huntington Chiefs Council for many years and has regularly attended the meetings of both chiefs councils for many years.

On June 24, 2019, the chiefs of the First Battalion Fire District hosted their Fifth Annual First Battalion Chief’s Golf Outing at the North Shore Towers Country Club to benefit Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior which has been helping our wounded service men and women and their families for the past 15 years. O’Connor Honored for 50 Years Service

The Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department honored former Chief Tim O’Connor with a celebration at fire department headquarters on June 15, 2019, for attaining a milestone of 50 years of dedicated service to the department and community. Tim is a member of Engine Company 2, and was joined by chiefs, officers,

members — including three other 50-plus-year members — family and friends. He was presented with numerous plaques, citations, awards and gifts from the department, FASNY and dignitaries.

BTFDOA Holds Installation Brunch

On May 5, 2019, the Brookhaven Town Fire Districts Officers Association held their Annual Meeting and Brunch. This year’s event was dedicated to Richard T. ‘Dick’ Nolan, for his dedicated service as an attorney for the association and many fire districts in the State of New York. Dick passed away in 2018.

Setauket Dedicates New HQ

The Board of Commissioners of the Setauket Fire Department conducted a ribbon cutting for the newly completed headquarters on June 23, 2019. The welcoming ceremony was led by the Jay Gardiner, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, and Chief Paul Rodier. Department Chaplin Reverend Gregory Leonard gave the Invocation. Remarks were made by NYS Assemblyman Steven Englebright, Suffolk Legislator Kara Hahn, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Councilwoman Valerie Cartright.

HANNOVER FAIRS USA TO LAUNCH INTERSCHUTZ USA FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY EVENT TO DEBUT IN PHILADELPHIA Hannover Fairs USA (HFUSA), the US subsidiary of Hannover, Germany’s Deutsche Messe - one of the world’s largest and most active organizers of capital goods trade shows - announced that it will debut INTERSCHUTZ USA focused on the North American firefighting equipment and safety industry. INTERSCHUTZ USA will take place October 13 to 17, 2020, in the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. INTERSCHUTZ is the world’s largest trade show for fire and rescue services, taking place every five years in Hannover, Germany.

The new five-day event will incorporate a global view of firefighting equipment and tactics.

INTERSCHUTZ USA will respect the traditions of the US fire service and will demonstrate firefighter safety solutions that incorporate current and emerging strategies and technologies in the US, as well as introduce what other industry experts and visionaries are doing globally.

RESCUE 1 SALES’ MIKE MARQUIS RETIRES May 31, 2019, marked the last day for Mike Marquis, Vice President of Rescue 1 Sales, here at P.L. Custom Body and Equipment Co., Inc. (PLCB) and the beginning of a well-deserved retirement.

Mike is capping off a 36-year successful career here in Manasquan. Over the years, Mike grew with the company, working first as an electrician, followed by developing our graphics department, then as a contract coordinator, and finally as the driving force behind our Rescue 1 division.

Initially sold as PL Custom Emergency Vehicles Rescue Trucks, Mike and Bud Smock developed the rescue division into what is now known as Rescue 1.

Formalized with that name in 1985, Mike became synonymous with the Rescue 1 Extreme Duty brand of rescues, command centers, haz-mat, and other specialty purposed emergency vehicles produced under the Rescue 1 moniker.

Under his watch, Rescue 1 has grown to enjoy a solid reputation as a custom manufacturer of Extreme Duty rescue trucks. Mike became intimately involved with each unit that was built here, developing strong relationships with our customers. In

discussing his retirement date, Mike said, “I have seen Rescue 1, and by extension, PL Custom, expand into new markets. The Rescue 1 brand has made tremendous strides and I look forward to watching the continued growth. Now I am looking forward to focusing on family and fishing. I have met and worked with many great people over these past three-plus decades, from customers, sales reps, vendors, and fellow employees. It has been a great career and I know that our past will shape our future.”

Today’s fire and emergency vehicle manufacturing industry is filled with daily personnel changes and company acquisitions. Just as PLCB remains a privately held, family-owned company today, Mike’s continuity with our Rescue 1 division is in stark contrast to the prevailing industry trend.

We look forward to hearing stories from Mike of his well-deserved retirement and know that he looks forward to spending time with his wife, Irene, his two sons, Michael and Matthew, and his dogs, Bro and Dude. On behalf of all of us here in Manasquan, we wish you all the best!

As I was going through my mail, I came upon a letter from a teacher To find out more about in Rocky Point (NY). It stated how her class was a big fan of the show, Firehouse Kitchen, or how to Firehouse Kitchen. She was excited and we set the date!

So began my trip to the northeast shore of Long Island. As one drives out that way, you cannot miss the feeling that you are in another place. The landscape goes from the suburbs to a more rural landscaping and is breath taking. For a moment, I forgot I was only 30 minutes from home! The class I was visiting, was a life skills class. The main objective in the class is to get the kids ready for the real world. What is more neces3 pounds of chicken sary in the real world than to know how to cook? Therefore, I Onions showed them how to cook a meal.

We went through a little Q-and-A and then got Skewer sticks right to work. I thought chicken skewers would be perfect. I Teriyaki sauce did most of the cutting and they did most of the skewering.

Huntington Manor Honors David Schombs

The Huntington Manor Fire Department recently recognized David Schombs for 50 years of dedicated service. Schombs was presented with several gifts and awards, and was elevated to the rank of Honorary Chief. He served as financial secretary of the Hook and Ladder Company, and is an ex-Captain of the Fire Police.

Schombs received many awards during his career, including the Richard Holst Inspiration Award, Hook and Ladder Firefighter of the Year, Peter Nelson Firefighter of the Year, and Fireman of the Year from Schaefer Brewing Company.

FASNY Honors Albertson with Recruitment and Retention Award The Chiefs of the Albertson Fire Hook and Ladder, Engine and Hose Company 1 were honored with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) 2019 Recruitment and Retention Award on June 10, 2019, at the Albertson Fire Station by Steve Klein, FASNY President, and Jose DaRocha, FASNY Board Member and member of the Albertson Fire Company. This honor is a new award for FASNY. Over the past two years, the Albertson Fire Company has seen a 30 percent increase in new member applications. The fire company has a unique family dynamic and camaraderie that helps with recruiting but the dedication of the chiefs, including Bill Clark, Joel Melamed, Jay Janowitz and Tim Farrell has been reflected in the company’s successful retention rate.

To help bring in new members from the community, the fire company has several welcoming street signs including the one in front of the firehouse. Every Sunday, they have the doors open and invite families to engage with the members and visit the fire trucks and rescue vehicles.

Using social media, many of the younger members post about the work they do and social opportunities, which helps to contribute to the retention of the junior probationary membership. However, the fire company’s old-fashioned approach to recruitment including using local advertisements and a large electronic display in front of the firehouse

still helps to bring people in.

“The success of the Albertson Fire Company is one I would like to use for the entire state of New York,” says Steve Klein, FASNY President. “Increasing membership by nearly 30 percent over the past two years and keeping the retention of new members greater than 80 percent is something we should all strive for.”

Obituary

The Bellport Fire Department’s Chet Arthur, Jr.

The Bellport Fire Department mourned the passing of Firefighter Chester A. Arthur, Jr., a 44-year member of the department. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Anne, his mother Patricia and sisters Patti Van Schiack and Penny Arthur. Throughout his illness, Chet was strong and courageous enduring more than anyone could possibly imagine, never complaining, never feeling sorry for himself and always with a smile on his face.

Chet was a true leader in the Bellport Fire Department. He was ready and willing to take on whatever task was necessary. He was instrumental in designing and building the department’s brush truck from an army surplus vehicle. He was a master at fabricating anything out of steel. In his job as a heavy equipment mechanic for Brookhaven Town, he went

into the fiery woods during the wild fires of 1995 and towed out brush trucks from other departments, worked on them and returned them to service asap.

Chet was the Captain of the Rescue Squad and the 1992 Fireman of the Year. He received the Chief’s Award in 1996 and in 1998 he was recognized for his work on the Fire Prevention Trailer. He was presented with the Department’s first Lifetime Achievement Award. With his quiet demeanor and quick wit, he made a difference. He is loved and will be missed. He was laid to rest with full departmental honors in Bellport on July 6, 2019.

Sag Harbor’s Edward J. Horn

It is with deep regret the Sag Harbor Fire Department announced that ex-Captain and 66-year member Edward J. ‘Toot’ Horn answered his last alarm.

Horn was a member of the Murray Hill Hose Company and the Fire Police. He was well known in the department and loved by all.

Full Firematic service was held on July 1, 2019.

STAR Rebate Shell Game?

By Louis J. Marcoccia; Brookhaven Town Receiver of Taxes As Receiver of Taxes in Brookhaven Township my staff and I are often asked by taxpayers to explain the various tax exemptions they may qualify for in an effort to reduce their property tax burden. While it's true my office does not administer nor qualify residents for these tax exemptions, the phone number on the tax bill still rings in my office and my staff and I are more than happy to advise and assist residents with a question concerning their bill. As an elected official my standing policy has always been about providing full government transparency and providing outstanding constituent service. I have never shied away from providing information, guidance and advice to our residents and it is in this advisory capacity that I write this OpEd. The recently passed budget included a provision inserted by Governor Cuomo that has the potential for significant tax ramifications for Brookhaven Town property owners.

Since its inception, the STAR rebate program has been administered locally by the Town Tax Assessors office. That changed in 2015 when all new home purchases required an application for the STAR exemption through the New York State Department of Finance.

Furthermore, the STAR savings would no

longer appear as a credit on the property tax bill but rather as a mailed check directly to taxpayers each October. The changes in 2019 however should be of particular interest to those taxpayers who receive the STAR Enhanced property tax exemption.

STAR Enhanced is an income-based exemption, worth thousands of dollars to the many senior citizens who receive it. In many cases, this credit is a major factor their ability to afford to stay in the home.

The Governor has now modified the program to allow residents to receive their STAR Enhanced as a direct payment from NYS in lieu of the credit on the bill. The Governor says that the change is needed to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of administration. So to entice taxpayers, the Governor is offering an additional two percent each year on top of the existing rebate for taxpayers that switch to check. This additional two percent averages about $46 a year. But the STAR tax credit has worked well in the past, why the change?

Issuing checks benefit the State for several reasons: part efficiency, part bookkeeping....part politics?

In the old system, schools gave homeowners the STAR savings and were then reimbursed by the state — which appears as a budget expense for the state. With the new system NYS gives

the savings directly to the homeowners in a check payment. That means the state can count the checks as a ‘personal income tax credit,’ allowing it to count the checks as a reduction in tax revenue, and not as state spending. This ‘reduction in expenses’ is an important accounting distinction as it allows for the Governors budget to more easily stay within his selfimposed two percent tax cap.

As it relates to the aforementioned incomebased STAR Enhanced exemption, a very important question needs to be asked: will seniors who opt-in and receive the check have that payment classified as income and therefore subject to both NYS and Federal income tax?

Furthermore, will residents receiving STAR Enhanced who are close to the income limit actually lose the exemption based on this new income?

I believe these open questions need to be clarified before anyone makes the switch.

Therefore, I am cautioning Town of Brookhaven residents currently receiving STAR and more specifically, STAR Enhanced, to consult with their tax professional for advice given their unique situation. No need to jump in, the program allows for open enrollment at ANYTIME there is no deadline. Please carefully consider your options, the financial stakes are too high to risk the loss of such a valuable exemption.
