The Perfect Time to Hone Skills I would like to take a moment to thank all of our responders who have been honored for performing above and beyond the call of duty. Fire News was proud to have attended many department installation and award dinners that honored responders for high points, training awards, CPR saves, rescues and years of service. As I write my editorial, the Fire Department of the City of New York is preparing to honor their members who have performed above and beyond the call of duty by saving lives. We will talk more about that in our next edition.

Are you one of your department’s newer members? Have you given thought to your dedication to your Oath of Service? Would you be able to put your life on the line to protect the lives of others? In your mind you are probably saying “Yes!” But what can you do to make sure you are ready to perform flawlessly at your next serious call? If you are given a rope and asked to tie it off, could you do it without hesitation? Or would you stare at the rope and guess at what to do?

Officers set up great company drills throughout the year. Once a month, an evolu-

tion and skills are reviewed. Can you really learn a skill by doing it once a month? I say, No! Watch your next yearly bailout recertification drill. Are your members able to tie off, make it to the window, and then bailout without thought? When a room is ready to flash, you have seconds to perform a maneuver flawlessly. When you are searching a smokefilled room without a search rope and your vibra alert goes off do you know what to do?

What happens if you are searching a room that you closed the door on and cannot find the door to leave the room? Maybe inside the room the door was totally smooth and blended into the wall. Do you have to give a Mayday signal, or could you calmly radio to someone out in the hall and ask them to open the door on the first room to the right of the staircase? Every situation requires thought about emergency procedures. Your thought process is developed by constantly drilling and talking with members to gain ideas on what to do. Critiquing after every call is a must! Constant practice is necessary to gain experience on skills that keep you safe.

It is the responder’s obligation to familiar-

ize themselves with the skills taught to them.

The next time you walk into the firehouse to kill time, eat your lunch or check the bulletin board, practice or do one thing that could save your life.

Try this. Keep a six-foot rope in your living room. When a commercial comes on, nonchalantly pick up the rope and make as many knots as you can until your show resumes. If you do this with dedication, your knot skills will improve. Oh, one more thing, know what the knot is used for and where you will use that knot.

Enjoy summer honing your skills as a first responder.

TEST YOUR SKILLS AT SELDEN COMPETITION

Truck 1 of Selden Fire Department will be hosting the first annual Firefighter Skills Competition as a fundraiser on September 21, 2019.

Teams of seven members will compete against each other in nine different skills for bragging rights as the Best Trained Firefighters in Suffolk.

Fast Stop in North Babylon

The North Babylon Fire Company responded to a house fire on Governor Avenue just before 0400 on May 24, 2019. Chief of Department J. Harrington found fire on the first floor and showing from a second-floor window of a two-story home. Engine 1-8-4 along with the crew from Engine 1-8-3 stretched and operated two

lines. The crew from Ladder 1-8-6 laddered, vented and searched the house. Third Assistant Chief Alt handled interior operations and the fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes. Mutual aid came from West Babylon, Deer Park, Wyandanch and the East Farmingdale.

Fire for Coverage Crews in Oceanside

On April 10, 2019, the Oceanside Fire Department went to the Nassau County Fire Service Academy in Bethpage for department operations. Standby units were put into place while Oceanside units were out of the district. Around 2030 the standby units (Rockville Centre Engine 442, East Rockaway 404, and Inwood Ladder 313) were called for smoke in the area of 3rd Street off Mott Street. This call was followed by a phone alarm reporting a chimney fire at a home on 3rd Street. When firefighters arrived, they found fire in the wall on the number three side of a single-story setback behind a two-story private dwelling. Two handlines were put into operation.

Mutual aid came from Freeport, East Rockaway, Island Park and Baldwin. The scene was placed under control within 25 minutes. Units were under the command of Rockville Centre Chief of Department Brian Cook.

FF Injured at Nissequogue Blaze

The Nissequogue Fire Department responded to a house fire in a large home on Long Beach Road in Nissequogue on May 25, 2019.

Firefighters arrived to a heavy fire condition. At least one firefighter was injured and transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. Mutual aid came from Saint James, Smithtown, Nesconset, Kings Park, Hauppauge, Commack, Centereach, Stony Brook and Setauket. It took over two hours to bring the blaze under control.

Garden City Smoker The Garden City Fire Department operated at the scene of a fire in a restaurant on Franklin Avenue on the morning of May 16, 2019. The fire appeared to have started in the duct work and spread upward. A heavy smoke condition was evident on arrival and extensive venting was necessary to clear the building.

Freeport Attic Fire On May 18, 2019, the Freeport Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an attic fire on East Seaman Avenue. Units arrived to fire in the attic of the house. Two lines were placed into operation off Engine 216 and the fire was quickly extinguished.

Commercial Truck Fire in Mastic

On June 7, 2019, the Mastic Fire Department was activated for an outside fire on Barnes Road. Commanding Chief Rudy Sunderman was met with a fully engulfed commercial work vehicle. The vehicle looked to be some type of asphalt machine. Mutual aid was requested from Mastic Beach, Manorville, Center Moriches and Shirley Ambulance. Crews used foam to extinguish the fire. A Brookhaven Town fire marshal responded to the scene for an investigation. No injuries were reported.

Early Morning Run for Uniondale

At approximately 0318 hours on June 2, 2019, the Uniondale Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on Mildred Place between Robinwood Avenue and Stanton Boulevard. Firefighters were met with a fire in the basement of a two-story private dwelling.

Uniondale Engine 7522 stretched two handlines. Firefighters made a quick knockdown of the fire and were able to keep it contained to

the basement. Among the other departments called for mutual aid were North Bellmore, Roosevelt, South Hempstead and Hempstead.

All occupants made it safely out of the home and the cause of the fire was under investigation. All fire department units were under the command of Uniondale First Assistant Chief Ashley.

Wantagh Basement Fire

The Wantagh Fire Department was called to house fire on Natalie Boulevard on June 1, 2019. Second Assistant Chief Bloomfield arrived to heavy smoke coming from a twostory home. Engine 693 and its crew along with additional engine crews stretched and operated three lines. The fire was located in the basement and had extended to the first floor of the home. The crews from Ladder 6911 and 6912 laddered, vented and searched the house. The fire was knocked down and brought under control within an hour. Mutual aid was provided to the scene by Seaford, Massapequa, Bellmore, Levittown and North Bellmore.

Kings Park House Fire

The Kings Park Fire Department responded to a house fire on Selmar Court in Kings Park on May 23, 2019. Upon arrival, a fire was discovered in a rear room and deck on the first floor. All occupants of the home were able to escape without injury. Mutual aid came from Commack and Northport. The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes.

Drones in the Fire Service for the Safety Officer Recently there were three people lost in the woods after their raft overturned in a river. Their cell phones did not have service. One of the three started walking to where he thought the road was. Once out of the woods he received cell service and contacted the local fire department. They responded to his location but he could not recall where the others were. The area was rugged and it would have taken some time to get a helicopter into the area, so rescuers sent up a drone (unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV), and within minutes found the others.

Here are seven different ways fire departments and the Safety Officer (SO) are using drones in their operations right now.

Assessing risk and danger; Responding to disasters; Saving lives; Making emergency deliveries; Creating pre-fire plans; Conducting investigations; and Creating training materials.

Drones continue to make their way onto fire apparatus for deployment at incident scenes. Fire departments are using drones for reconnaissance of wildfires and MVAs, hazmat incidents, hot spot identification at structure fires, and even in rescue scenarios.

According to Rod Carringer, former Chief of the Center Township (IN) Fire Department, “With the demands on limited staffing so many agencies deal with, any asset such as a drone that can be used to provide real-time situational and operational awareness is equipment that should be integrated into operations.� Carringer points out that besides the recon function and hot spot identification, additional uses for drones include search and rescue, even in urban settings; preplanning with aerial photos and video identification of water supply sources, utility shutoffs, and apparatus location planning; winter and ice rescue; and disaster assessment and post-disaster recon after weather events such as floods or tornados. This is another tool for the SO. The FDNY has been deploying the Hover Fly tethered drone at incident scenes since 2017. They could very quickly take a look at the situation and know how many resources were needed. However, the big advantage of tethered drones is that they have a constant power source and are able to give broad, very clear pictures. The FDNY recently got a non-tethered DJI Phantom that gives them better capability for hazardous materials incidents and search and rescue. They also plan on getting a DJI Matrice 210, which was used at a situation during Hurricane Sandy where people were on the roofs of their homes and they were able to find them fast.

Drone pilots try to give the incident commander (IC) a view of the building that the IC cannot see — the rear of the building or the roof level. The drone is able to assess fire travel, structural issues like cracks in a building or danger of collapse, and roof operations to determine if anything is unsafe and needs corrective action.

Concerns are with firefighter safety and getting a better view of an incident, and drones are great tools to use to your best advantage as the SO. Departments considering starting a drone program should do an assessment of how they want to use a drone. First, I would offer that to properly implement a drone strategy in a fire department, you should really have folks who are licensed to the FAA Part 107 certification. Next, they should assess what they want to use a drone for, create operational guidelines, and take training and maintenance of equipment as seriously as if it were SCBA. Basement Fire in Deer Park Tavern On June 2, 2019, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a possible basement fire at the U Need a Rest Tavern on Long Island Avenue. Chief Steve Jacob was in charge. A line was stretched into a cluttered basement to stop the fire. Mutual aid came from Dix Hills, North Babylon, West Islip and Wyandanch Wheatley Heights. No injuries were reported.

Melville Tractor Trailer Fire On May 1, 2019, the Melville Fire Department was activated for a vehicle fire on Broadhollow Road. Upon arrival, commanding units were met with a fully involved cab of a tractor trailer off to the side of the roadway.

Luckily the driver of the truck escaped with no injuries. The crew of the first-due engine knocked down the fire without further incident.

4 FFs Hurt at Stubborn West Islip Blaze On June 12, 2019 the West Islip Fire Department was activated for a reported outside fire on Jefferson Avenue.

Commanding units found a well involved structure fire. Mutual aid came from West Babylon, Deer Park, Brentwood, Bay Shore, Brentwood Legion Ambulance and Bay Shore Brightwaters Ambulance. Crews made an aggressive attack on the stubborn blaze which took about an hour to bring under control. Four firefighters were injured fighting the fire. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

50 Evacuated in Setauket May 18, 2019, started with a smoky fire in a dryer at the Atria in East Setauket. The fire resulted in the evacuation of over 50 elderly residents from the facility. All EMS and firefighters deserve a thank you for a job well done in caring for the residents. One resident was transported to Stony Brook Medical Center to be evaluated.

When It Rains, It Pours

On April 28, 2019, at 2340, the North Massapequa Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on North Hickory Street. NCPD Ambulance 2367 arrived to fire showing from the 1-2 corner of the house. Mutual aid was quickly requested, as Bethpage was working a large commercial fire less than five miles away, utilizing many of the same mutual aid companies required. Engine 663 stretched the initial attack line into the house. Two lines were stretched and placed into operation to extinguish the fire.

Car Fire on the SSP At about 0300 on May 31, 2019, the North Babylon Fire Company responded to a reported vehicle fire on the Southern State Parkway east of exit 39. Second Assistant Chief T. Harrington arrived, followed by Chief of Department J. Harrington and Third Assistant Chief Alt to find a sedan involved and the driver out of the vehicle. The crew from 1-8-2 put one line into operation to extinguish the fire in about 10 minutes.

State Police Car Fire The North Babylon Fire Company was called to a vehicle fire on the eastbound Southern State Parkway on the ramp to Belmont Avenue on May 29, 2019.

Engines 1-8-3 and 1-8-8 arrived to find a New York State Police car involved.

Crews used one handline from 1-8-8 to extinguish the fire in about 15 minutes.

There were no injuries.

Where There’s Smoke …

There’s Not Always Fire On May 15, 2019, the Farmingdale Fire Department was alerted for a reported vehicle fire on Fulton Street near Staples Street.

Upon arrival, the first-due crew of the brand new Engine 921 examined the vehicle and advised that the engine was smoking due to an overheat condition.

Huntington Manor Car Fire

The Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to a car fire on Old Country and Wolf Hill Roads in South Huntington on June 2, 2019. Two engines were dispatched and crews quickly had the blaze extinguished, under the command of Chief Jon Hoffmann, and Assistant Chiefs Jim Glidden and Brian Christen. The driver suffered burns on his hands and face, and was transported to Huntington Hospital by the Huntington Community First Aid Squad.

West Hempstead Dryer Fire The West Hempstead Fire Department responded to a building fire on the afternoon of June 8, 2019. The fire was located in a dryer in a laundromat on Woodfield Road near Cedar Street. All people were outside on arrival and a heavy smoke condition was present throughout. The fire was quickly knocked down and the area vented.

Northport Installation

The Northport Fire Department held its 130th annual installation dinner on May 18, 2019, at the Huntington Crescent Club. After the pledge of allegiance and invocation came the chief’s message from Chief John Jacobsen. Once his speech concluded, guests were introduced, chiefs and officers were sworn in, department and company awards were presented. Leading the department for 2019 - 2020 will be Chief of Department John Jacobsen, First Assistant Chief Dennis Sheridan, and Second Assistant Chief Douglas Pyne. Congratulations to those awarded and good luck to those installed into office.

NYS Firefighters Descend on Albany for Annual Government Affairs Day Firefighters representing the four largest fire service organizations in New York State descended on Albany on May 20, 2019, for their annual Government Affairs Day. They spent the day meeting with their elected representatives to discuss the Issues of United Concern, advocating personally for legislation that would benefit both the fire service and the people of New York State. This year’s main priority is a bill that would allow fire departments to recover the costs of providing ambulance services.

The EMS cost recovery bill (S. 03685 / A. 01778) is sponsored by State Senator John Brooks and Assemblymember Billy Jones, and is currently on its third reading in the State Senate. This legislation is a bipartisan effort to resolve a long-brewing affordability crisis facing New York’s fire departments. Fire departments provide EMS coverage to nearly half of the state, and many of these departments are staffed by volunteers. EMS call volumes are steadily rising, with many fire departments now handling more ambulance than fire runs. Staffing an ambulance requires a significant investment in personnel, equipment, training, and time.

Despite the massive resources needed to properly provide safe, reliable ambulance coverage, fire departments are uniquely required to shoulder all the costs associated with running ambulances. Unlike fire departments, every other ambulance provider in New York State, including private EMS companies and volunteer ambulance corps (VACs), can recover some of the expense by working directly with patients’ insurance providers.

This legislation changes this, allowing fire departments to recover the costs of running EMS calls without raising any taxes. Once passed and signed into law, fire departments would be able to benefit from existing sources of revenue, such as patients’ already-existing healthcare policies. The recovered funds would be used to ensure that fire department ambulances across New York State are properly staffed with well-trained and equipped emergency medical technicians, ready to serve the community.

The passage of this legislation would give some much-needed financial assistance to many of the State's departments, while also likely yielding improved response times and service for New Yorkers.

Other 2019 Issues of United Concern • Chapter Amendments to GML 205cc (presumptive cancer coverage for volunteer firefighters): clarifying or modifying as appropriate the verification requirements so that benefits may be extended to intended firefighters with five years of interior service to their respective departments.

Police Surgeons Benefit Car Show

The Police Surgeons Benevolent Association and the Centurion Cruisers Car Club held their annual Car Show at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington on June 2, 2019.

Vintage police cars along with classic cars and antiques were on display. Show proceeds were donated to the family of Suffolk County Police Officer Fadi Rafeh, who passed away suddenly last January. This year’s show was held in the memory of fallen Suffolk County Police Officers Edwin Hernandez and Glenn Ciano, who both died in the Line of Duty.

Units and personnel from the Suffolk County Police, Nassau County Police, NY State Police and NYPD attended.

EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND Melville MVA

The Melville Fire Department and Suffolk County Police responded to an MVA on Ruland Road near Maxess Road on May 22, 2019.

The driver of a small SUV went off the road and knocked down a tree. Engine 2-5-7, Heavy Rescue 2-5-12 and numerous ambulances responded under command of First Assistant Chief Kaplan. The driver, the only person in the vehicle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Huntington Hospital.

Farmingville Car-Into-Tree

On April 26, 2019, the Farmingville Fire Department responded to a single-car accident in which a car ran into a tree on South Bicycle Path. No injuries were reported for the incident.

Fuel Spill at Smithtown MVA The Suffolk Police, Hauppauge Fire Department and Commack Ambulance responded to an MVA on Old Willets Path and Branch Bridge Road in Smithtown on April 26, 2019. A landscaping truck and an SUV collided causing a diesel fuel leak on the truck. Firefighters had to contain the leak before the fluid went into storm drain. Two people suffered minor injuries.

2 Injured in Valley Stream MVA A violent two-vehicle accident at the corner of West Merrick Road and South Central Avenue in Valley Stream left at least two people injured on June 1, 2019. One vehicle smashed into the side of a nearby building while the other overturned onto its roof.

Patchogue Overturn On May 29, 2019, the North Patchogue Fire Department was activated for an MVA with overturn and possible fire on the eastbound portion of Sunrise Highway near exit 53.

Commanding units were met with a singlevehicle MVA and confirmed overturn. Firstdue crews secured the vehicle and the driver was transported to a nearby hospital for his injuries via a North Patchogue Ambulance.

2 Injured in East Brentwood 2-Car On May 9, 2019, the East Brentwood Fire Department was activated for an MVA on Suffolk Avenue. Commanding units were met with a two-car accident off to the side of the road with negative entrapment. The crew of Rescue 5 secured both vehicles. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital for their injuries via an East Brentwood Ambulance.

Dix Hills DWI Crash Injures Two

Kings Park Handles SMP 2-Car

The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to a MVA overturn into the woods on Vanderbilt Parkway between Red Oak Court and Village Hill Drive on June 2, 2019. Two of the four occupants were transported to Huntington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries by the Dix Hills Rescue Squad. The driver was charged with DWI by Suffolk Police. Units were under the command of Chief Alan Berkowitz and Assistant Chiefs Joe Williamson, Brett Tepe and Scott DiPino.

The Melville Fire Department was dispatched to an MVA after a car struck a tree on Ruland Road near Maxess Road on May 22, 2019. The driver suffered traumatic injuries, and was transported to Huntington Hospital by Melville ambulance. Units were under the command of Assistant Chiefs David Kaplan and Bill Schmitt.

An SUV and a truck collided at the intersection of South Franklin Street and Peninsula Boulevard trapping one occupant in the SUV. The injured passenger was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Chuck Varese Tournament

On May 11, 2019, the Northport Fire Department hosted the 12th annual Chuck Varese Extrication Tournament. The annual event is held in memory of Northport Firefighter Chuck Varese who was hit and killed by a drug impaired driver while riding his motorcycle in 2008. Several departments from both Nassau and Suffolk counties

were on hand to put their skills to the test. At the end of the day the top three finishers were East Northport, Commack, and Huntington Manor. Huntington Manor had the fastest extrication time of the day and North Bellmore was recognized as the furthest traveled.

Bethpage 2019 Installation The Bethpage Fire Department held its annual installation of officers on June 8, 2019, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Honored was Michael Urbanick, installed for his second year as Chief of Department by Commissioner George Rolla. On the night of June 8, 2019, the Port Washington Fire Department held their installation dinner â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the first since 2017 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; at the Milleridge Cottage in Jericho. It was emceed by Protection Engine Company ex-Captain Donald Alexander. Thomas Golden was installed as Chief of Department along with Brian Waterson and Matt Kerin who were installed as the First and Second Assistant Chiefs respectively. Various other officers within the department were installed as well. Ex-Chief Bryan Vogeley was honored for serving as Chief of the Department for the past two years and ex-Chief Chris Bollerman was recognized for his time served as the Chairman of the Board. The ceremony portion of the night concluded with a performance by the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums Band.

Saving the Flag â&#x20AC;Ś and Then Some There has always been a strong bond between Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s military, law enforcement and the fire service. That bond was on full display in the aftermath of a serious wind driven two-alarm fire that broke out on North Cedar Street in North Massapequa on March 28, 2019.

As members of the North Massapequa Fire Department were bringing the blaze under control, Captain Joseph Ferrante of Hose and Engine Company 2, retrieved an American service flag and commemorative shadowbox for the very appreciative homeowner.

US Navy Commander Kevin Hudson was the guest speaker and parade marshal at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Memorial Day parade in Centerport. Commander Hudson is a Centerport native who graduated Harborfields High School in 1988. Hudson enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Ranger. He has served in various squadrons flying the P3 Orion in combat missions over Kosovo, Bosnia, the Philippines, Iraq and Afghanistan. Hudson is currently serving as the international engagements branch head at US Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia. Smithtownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Charles E. Duffy The Smithtown Fire Department laid to rest ex-Captain Charles E. Duffy on May 22, 2019. Ex-Captain Duffy had served 50 years of dedicated service to the community just up to his passing.

A funeral mass was held at St Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

Church followed by a procession passing his home and Engine Company 5 station and then to the main house where an arch was raised.

Ex-Captain Duffy will be missed.

Getting Ready for the Busy Season Every Saturday morning from Memorial Day through Labor Day, members of Atlantic Beach Rescue’s Water Team conduct surf rescue training including rescue swimmer and pilot training on the surf rescue boat. On June 8, 2019, AB Rescue’s FAA certified Drone Unit joined the training, conducting wide area ocean search patterns.

Afterwards beachgoers and their children joined the team for a photo opportunity before the team returned to base to prepare for a busy weekend.

NFFF: ARE YOU PREPARED FOR AN LODD?

In June 2019, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) presented two Taking Care of Our Own (TCOOO) classes for Long Island fire service members. The course is designed to help agencies develop, in advance, a plan to follow in an LODD, supporting both the family and the department. Joe Minogue, New York Advocate and FDNY Liaison for the NFFF said, “The goal of this program is to give leaders the tools they need to support our fire responders and their families if and when tragedy hits home.”

LODDs or severe injury can come at any time, and in any department. Some LODDs are unavoidable, but others can (and should) be prevented.

Either way, the impacts on the firefighter’s family, department, and the community are immediate and long lasting.

Bill Hinton, the NFFF’s TCOOO program coordinator, began the class with a quick overview of the foundation. Retired Chief Ron Blackwell shared his personal experiences; during his career he experienced three LODDs under his watch. His stories included making the family notification and lessons learned; this set the groundwork for the next speaker.

Cathy Hedrick lost her young son, Kenny, in a house fire. Cathy, an RN, shared the story of his death, which went on to shape the rest of her life both volunteering and later working for the NFFF. Not only is her husband a firefighter, but at the time of Kenny’s death he was also the Chief of the Department. Her telling of the days, weeks and years that followed hit home for the class participants.

Are we really prepared to respond to an LODD? Do we have an updated plan? Do we even have a plan? What resources are available to our department, our members, and their families? Do we know

what mental health resources are available for the families and firefighters? Are the records updated with each member’s current family and emergency notification information? What are the federal, state, local, and department financial benefits for the families, how do we apply for them, and when will the funds be made available?

All this information was addressed, discussed, and shared as a group.

Another member of the team, David Wiklanski, a New Jersey firefighter and behavioral health specialist, brought into focus the mental health elements to consider when helping each other, not only when we suffer a tragic loss, but on an ongoing basis. An introduction to Stress First Aid offered a starting point for our members to support and aid each other. The interactive groups shared conversations and lessons learned; discussions left everyone with a far more profound impact than they had anticipated.

At the day’s conclusion, each participant left prepared to, if the need arises, pay it forward and make the difference in someone’s life. These valuable insights and information are meant to be shared with their peers and fire department leadership. In closing, Minogue expressed his appreciation, as well as that of everyone in attendance, “The strong leadership of the Long Island fire academies was on display this weekend. Thank you, Chief Bobby Hughes and Chief Ed Johnson, for your support.”

Firehouse Kitchen With Host Ray Cooney

The Pride of Chicken Salad According to the pride of Sheffield Avenue’s, Joe Walsh, from Engine 290 in East New York, Brooklyn, Engine 290 is the best engine in the FDNY. They put out “millions” of fires a year and respond within seconds of the alarms. Yes, this is what I hear from the great Joe Walsh who has appeared on Firehouse Kitchen. Joe loves to put me — and every other borough besides Brooklyn — down. This is Joe’s second time on the show, yet, as you should know by now, I have a way of dishing it right back. I can bust chops, about Brooklyn, with the best of them.

Joe’s meal was “Brooklyn Chicken Salad.” My comment was, “Wow, I guess that’s how you Brooklyn guys eat chicken.

Us Queens firefighters like to bake it and eat it off the bone like real men.” This started a lot of unmentionable banter between Joe and I and some great lines that Joe said, and I quote, “Is Staten Island a paid fire department?” “If you look over the horizon and see smoke, that’s Brooklyn”, and so on.

One funny mentionable comment from this

episode was during the promotion of my new wine. It supports fire fighter charities. It’s called Smoke Eater Wine — First Due Red. Its symbol is a fire helmet. My partner on the show, Gerard, from Ladder 143, turned me on to this wine because it’s going to support “Fired Up for a Cure,” an FDNY 9/11 charity. The funny mentionable was when Joe made a comment towards Kirkland (Costco) chicken salad and Gerard was in the background waving his hands furiously at the thought that Joe might insult a possible carrier of the wine. From that point on, Joe made an exaggerated point of mentioning every Kirkland (Costco) product he was using in his chicken salad. Of course, everything that Engine 290 does is unbelievable, including Joe’s chicken salad.

On a serious note. Engine 290 is a highly respected company, no matter what any Queen’s guy may say. The camaraderie in that firehouse is what the FDNY is all about.

East Norwich Juniors Celebrate 25th Anniversary Russell Fuller (back left) Swearing in 2019 officers and members On June 1, 2019, at the Crescent Beach Club, the East Norwich Juniors celebrated their 25th anniversary. The program started in 1994 when 1st Assistant Chief Paul Power brought the idea to the fire company with the hope of boosting recruitment and retention. The major success of the program stems from the support of the Fire Company, Advisor Jerry Presta stated, with no shortage of members and officers always on hand to assist in the trainings, outings or whatever is needed. “The program works, we have many officers in the company that came out of the Junior program including two chiefs — past-Chief Wayne Pacella and now 2nd Assistant Chief Jason Shoemaker.”

Along with Presta, advisors Pauline Cronin, Anthony Bott and Sean Cronin. Both Sean and Anthony came out of the program, as well.

Past-Chief and Secretary Russell Fuller was on hand to swear in the junior members and officers. Among the 2019 officers was Captain Mary Grace Syrett who is also the 2nd Vice- President of the Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association. Lieutenant John Travaglia, 1st Lieutenant Jonathon Cox, Treasurer Dillon Phelps, Secretary Kayla Cronin and Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Bott were also sworn in.

At the ceremony, Jerry Presta was presented with the FASNY Youth Mentor of the Year award by FASNY President Steven Klein, for the work he has done with the youth in the fire service, not only in East Norwich but throughout the state.

Presta spoke about how far the Junior programs in Nassau County have come in the last 21 years. He intends to continue working with his company, Nassau Junior Firefighters, and FASNY to keep the youth interested, educated and engaged.

Middle Island Awards for Lifesaving Work at MVA

On April 27, 2019, the Middle Island Fire Department held their annual awards and installation dinner. Congratulations to all of the chiefs and officers as they lead the department in 2019.

Congratulations to ex-Chief Tom Webb who was. honored for his 60 years of dedicated service to MIFD. Also the following members were honored for their life saving efforts at the scene of a Heavy Rescue MVA which was on February 9, 2019. Marcel Rosenfeld, Matthew Gropper, Andrew DeSantis, Dan Marsteller and Bryan Astrin received the Hurst Extrication Green Cross. Alyssa Corona, John Gironda, Dorothy Hauck, Anthony Irenze, Susan Kister, Matthew Mauro, Michael Musialik, Adrian Pezzica, Mark Tesoriero, Vicki Volpe, William Meisenzahl, Michelle Themann, and Peter Kane, were awarded fire and EMS commendations “It is with great honor that the chief’s office honors all of these members,” wrote Chief of Department Kenneth Donnelly. “The lifesaving maneuvers taken by the firefighters and EMS personnel … are what we train for. Congratulations on a job well done!”

Brookhaven Fire Marshal Partners with SUNY Farmingdale Students

Romaine Honors Selden at Installation Dinner

For the fifth consecutive year, Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshal’s office has partnered with SUNY Farmingdale’s Architecture and Construction Management students to assist in the completion of their Service Learning Existing Condition Drawings Project. The Town-owned buildings that were included in the project were the Sandspit Ferry Terminal, Marina Tower and Shed in Patchogue; Carmans River Canoe and Kayak II in Brookhaven; and the Moriches Bay Recreation Center in Center Moriches. Each building was visited, sketched, measured, photographed and drawn using computer drafting programs, which are provided to the town for future fire safety applications. New Hyde Park Dedicates New Station

The New Hyde Park Fire Department officially dedicated Station 4 before the annual Memorial Day parade on May 24, 2019. The building is located at 307 South 12th Street. Its purpose is to provide timely fire and EMS protection due to the construction of new LIRR crossings on Covert Avenue and New Hyde Park Road. The “tin house” building was constructed in an agreement with the MTA and New Hyde Park Fire District. Apparatus in the new building are Ambulance 174C, Mini Pumper 1769 and EMS Fly Car 1799B. The LIRR roadway projects in New Hyde Park are due to be completed in spring of 2021. In the interim, Station 4 will be in operation.
