Are We In Changing Times?

The volunteer fire service dates back to January 27, 1678, when the first fire engine company went into service. In 1736, Benjamin Franklin established the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia. As cities grew, so did the need for a fire service that could respond quickly and was available 24 hours a day.

When I moved to Long Island, I lived in an area that was just starting to develop.

People from NYC were moving to the suburbs for a quieter and affordable lifestyle. In my case, it wasn’t long before I received a visit from some of my neighbors who were members of my local fire department. They asked me to give thought to joining the fire department. Proudly, I joined my local department and trained diligently so I could hold my own at calls. As the years flew by and my community grew, I soon noticed that the number of volunteers were declining.

How do you maintain a strong recruitment program? In my early years there was a waiting list to join the fire department. Today, times are different and the problems of maintaining a well-staffed and active volunteer

fire service require monitoring by the commissioners and chiefs who run their department with limited budgets.

The number of volunteers in New York have dropped from 120,000 in the late 1990s to 80,000 by 2010. Thanks to the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), a creative recruitment initiative has addressed the problem of recruitment.

FASNY’s RecruitNY program has added upward of 20,000 members to local fire departments. The number of volunteer firefighters has risen to 100,000 as of 2018.

Let’s face facts. When you or anyone in your community has a need for your fire department’s services, you expect to hear sirens responding to help you within minutes after you make the call for help. My department formed a paid EMS section many years ago. When you call 911, a paramedic and two EMTs are heading to the call. We still have a very active group of unpaid professionals who respond to pick up the calls that often follow the first call. Yes, volunteer fire departments are receiving multiple calls throughout the day and the number is signif-

Changing times call for new ideas that encourage people to seriously think of becoming active volunteers. When someone volunteers they must realize that they are expected to do the job when duty calls. If your department is having difficulty maintaining an active group of volunteer responders, then it is time for discussions to solve the problems that are preventing your trucks from rolling to calls. I urge all departments to discuss ways to recruit and retain new members.

Restoration Kitchen & Cocktails - Helping Charities Since Restoration Kitchen & Cocktails was organized, quarterly, Billy Miller and his wife choose two Long Island charities, and donate the net profits to the two charities. Each customer, after paying their bill, is given a donation token, to place in a bucket of the charity they wish to support. The Heather Pendergast Fund is honored to be chosen as one of the charities, for the four-month period, which began May 1, 2019.

The Heather Pendergast Fund depends on donations and fundraising activities, to continue its mission, started in 2009, in loving memory of Heather, to assist the children of volunteer firefighters and EMS on Long Island, who face a life-threatening illness or injury. Since organized in 2009, the fund has provided assistance for the children of 21 volunteers.

The fund is currently in the early process of assisting our 22nd child.

We ask our brother and sister volunteers, to stop in for a great lunch or dinner, or some wonderful cocktails, and support our mission.

Cover Story

Hicksville Commercial Fire The Hicksville Fire Department responded to a reported building fire on West John Street on April 29, 2019.

Engine 933 arrived to heavy smoke coming from a single-story commercial building. Westbury Chief of Department Gass assumed command until Hicksville Chief of Department Chiz arrived and took over. As crews made entry into the building with multiple handlines, the rear of the building became fully involved and all members were pulled for an exterior attack with master streams from Hicksville Ladder 931, Syosset Ladder 582 and handlines. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control with mutual aid from Westbury, Syosset, Jericho, Bethpage, East Meadow and Levittown. The cause of the fire was under investigating.

Franklin Sq.Munson Handles House Fire On April 8, 2019, the Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on June Place.

Crews arrived to fire from the attic.

Engine 711 stretched the initial attack line into the structure, while crews from Ladder 713 began roof operations. The fire was placed under control in less than an hour.

East Meadow Handles Car Fire On April 20, 2019, East Meadow firefighters operated at the scene of a well involved van fire. The vehicle was in a parking lot on East Meadow Avenue just off Hempstead Turnpike. Engine 611 had the primary line stretched and in operation and a backup was stretched off Engine 614. All occupants were able to make it safely out of the vehicle and all fire department units were under the command of East Meadow Second Assistant Chief Kosiba.

Setauket House Fire

The Setauket Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at a home on Triangle Drive in Setauket on April 22, 2019. Chief Paul Rodier was first on scene and there were no occupants in the house.

Mutual aid came from Stony Brook, St. James, Port Jefferson and Centereach. The fire was quickly brought under control. An aggressive and quick attack kept the fire from spreading throughout the house. Terryville and Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps provided back up for Setauket.

Muttontown Garage Fire Goes to 3 Alarms On April 7, 2019, the East Norwich Fire Department was dispatched for a car fire in a driveway on Edge Court in Muttontown. First-due units encountered two fully involved cars in the driveway with the fire extending to the house. Engine 512 stretched the initial attack lines into the structure. The fire quickly rose to a third alarm, with mutual aid from numerous departments called to assist. The fire was extinguished in less than an hour with extensive overhaul completed.

Got the Hydrant on Just in Time At 1145 on April 17, 2019, the Massapequa Fire Department responded to a house fire on Parkside Boulevard in Massapequa. Massapequa Water District employees were in the process of removing a fire hydrant when they observed smoke coming from the home next to where they were working.

Engine 635 arrived just as the Water District employees turned the hydrant back on. Two lines was stretched and the fire was quickly located and extinguished. Seaford responded as the FAST. No one was home at the time of the fire and fire marshals were on scene to investigate the cause.

North Massapequa House Fire The North Massapequa Fire Department was called to a house fire on North Cedar Street just before noon on April 4, 2019. Chiefs Maroldo and Pesale arrived at a two-story home well involved with high winds pushing the fire through the house. Engine 663 and additional arriving engines stretched and operated multiple handlines. Ladder 661 laddered, vented and searched.

It took just over an hour to bring the fire under control. Mutual aid came from Massapequa, Seaford, Wantagh, South Farmingdale, Farmingdale, Levittown, Bethpage and North Bellmore.

Central Islip Car Fire

The Central Islip Fire Department responded to a structure fire on fence. Chief Patrick Murphy was in command. The vehicle was March 21, 2019, at 0131, on William Street at East Suffolk Avenue. totally destroyed with minor damage to the structure.

South Farmingdale House Fire On April 13, 2019, the South Farmingdale Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Walland Avenue. Command units were met with heavy smoke and visible fire from the home. Command requested mutual aid from Bethpage, East Farmingdale, Bethpage, Massapequa, North Massapequa, Hicksville and Amityville. Multiple attack lines were put into operation.

Crews made an aggressive attack and quickly knocked down the fire.

Fully Involved on Arrival On April 1, 2019, firefighters from Centereach, Stony Brook and Selden were called to a fully involved structure fire located on North Washington Avenue. Terryville covered Centereach during the call.

Early Morning Flames KO’d in Selden On April 5, 2019, the Selden Fire Department stopped a fire from spreading on Hawkins Road. The fire, which may have started outside of the home and extended into the attic above the garage, was knocked down with the help of mutual aid from Terryville and Farmingville.

Good Stop for Huntington Manor The Huntington Manor Fire Department was dispatched for a house fire on Manetto Hill Road, on March 7, 2019.

First Assistant Chief Chuck Brady advised dispatch of a heavy smoke condition. Crews from Engine 3 stretched a line for an interior attack as Ladder 8’s crew conducted search and ventilation. The fire was quickly knocked down, limiting damage to the structure. Melville, Huntington, Greenlawn and Plainview assisted at the scene, while the Huntington Community First Aid Squad handled EMS standby. Halesite also had a crew for standby. Units were under the command of Chief Jon Hoffmann, supported by Assistant Chiefs Brady, Glidden and Christen.

Massapequa Brush Fire Extends

The Massapequa Fire Department received multiple calls reporting a brush fire in the yard of a Floyd Lane home just before midnight April 6, 2019. An ex-chief of the department arrived on scene and notified dispatch that the fire had spread to the house on the exposure 4 side. Third Assistant Chief Maneri and Chief of Department Stansberry arrived. Engine 635 stretched and operated two lines

and the fire was quickly extinguished. The fire had also damaged power lines that were above it. The crews from Ladders 636 and 632 laddered the house and also checked the interior for any extension, which was negative. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.

Brush Burns in Terryville On April 25, 2019, under the command of Chief of Department Tom Young, the Terryville Fire Department made quick work of a brush fire that was discovered in the woods at the intersection of Terryville and Old Town Roads. With the help of the Selden Fire Department, the flames were quickly knocked down before they could spread to neighboring rear yards and fences.

Early Morning Commercial Fire on Rte. 109

The East Farmingdale Fire Company was called to a building fire at Theater 294 on Route 109 about 0445 on April 17, 2019. First Assistant Chief Welliver arrived to smoke coming out of the front of the business and located the fire in the rear of the building.

Engine 1-5-7 stretched a 2-1/2 inch line through the front door to get to the fire. Ladder 1-5-15 set up in the rear and went to the roof and opened up neighboring businesses with the crew of Ladder 15-5. A second line was put into operation on the roof as the fire extended up the rear into the roof area. The fire was declared under control just before 0600 and contained to the one business.

Mutual aid came from Farmingdale, South Farmingdale, Amityville and North Lindenhurst.

Holtsville Car Fire On March 13, 2019, the Holtsville Fire Department was activated for a vehicle fire on 8th Avenue. Chief Neal Harris was met with an involved auto and advised Engine 6 of the active fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.

Glen Cove Christens New Rig The Glen Cove Fire Department operated at a house fire on Ravine Avenue on the afternoon of May 1, 2019. The blaze was in a large, two-story private dwelling, which had a heavy smoke condition on arrival. The alarm marked the first working fire for their new tiller rig — Unit 5211.

Hicksville Fire Extends

The Hicksville Fire Department was alerted for a vehicle fire in the driveway of a Bond Lane home just after 0500 on April 2, 2019.

Second Assistant Chief Moskos arrived to find a van on fire that extended into the house and the garage and kitchen area. Engine 933 stretched and operated two handlines to extinguish the fire. The

crew from Ladder 931 laddered, vented and searched the house.

The fire was knocked down and placed under control within an hour. Mutual aid was provided by Levittown, East Meadow and Plainview. Chief of Department Chiz was in charge.

Massapequa House Fire The Massapequa Fire Department was called to a house fire on Cartwright Boulevard just before 2100 on April 29, 2019. Units arrived to fire in a first-floor boiler room, that extended up a wall to the attic. Crews from Engines 6314 and 6315 stretched three lines with two going into operation. The crews from Ladders 632 and 636 laddered, searched, vented and opened a section of roof near the chimney to expose a pocket of fire. The fire was brought under control within an hour. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire was under investigation. Amityville responded as the FAST and units from the Seaford and North Massapequa stood by for Massapequa. Chief of Department Stansberry was in charge of the scene.

Occupants Jump to Safety The Lakeland Fire Department responded to a fire in an apartment complex on Peconic Street in Ronkonkoma on March 17, 2109, at 0052.

Firefighters arrived to a heavy fire condition in several apartments.

Occupants were forced to jump from second floor balconies. Three residents were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries. Mutual aid came from Ronkonkoma, Nesconset, Bohemia, Holbrook, Hauppauge, Central Islip and Saint James. The Town of Islip Fire Marshal and Suffolk Police were on scene investigating the cause.

Quick Stop in Bellmore

On March 20, 2019, the Bellmore Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on Croydon Drive off Camp Avenue. Firefighters were met with fire showing on the first floor of an unoccupied, twostory, private dwelling undergoing construction. North Bellmore, Wantagh and North Merrick were among the departments called for mutual aid. The main body of fire was quickly knocked down and there was no extension to the floor above. Fire units were under the command of Bellmore Chief of Department Schmalenberger.

15 Displaced at Brentwood Blaze

On March 19, 2019, at 1500, the Brentwood Fire Department responded for a structure fire on Yarnell Street. Second Assistant Chief Ed Kelly reported a fully involved camper trailer alongside a home. The fire had already consumed the rear half of the home and was extending to the second floor. Four attack lines were used to

bring the blaze under control in about one hour. Mutual aid companies included East Brentwood, Bay Shore, Islip and Brentwood Legion Ambulance. No injuries were reported but the Red Cross secured housing for 15 people.

North Bellmore Garage Fire Extends

On the morning of March 24, 2019, North Bellmore firefighters operated at a fire in a home on Cayuga Avenue in the North Bellmore Fire District. Mutual aid came from Levittown, East Meadow and Bellmore. Standing by was Uniondale, Wantagh, and an ambulance from North Merrick. All occupants made it safely out of the home

and the cause of the fire was under investigation. The fire appeared to have started in a detached garage and auto-exposed to the house — a two-story dwelling. All fire department units were under the command of North Bellmore Chief of Department George Serviss.

Wind-Pushed Blaze in North Massapequa

On the morning of April 4, 2019, the North Massapequa Fire Department was activated for a house fire on North Cedar Street. First units arrived to a well involved home with a heavy smoke and fire load throughout, pushed by strong winds. It took about an hour for the fire to be brought under control with mutual aid departments from Massapequa, Seaford, Farmingdale, South Farmingdale, Wantagh, North Bellmore, Levittown and Bethpage.

The Medford Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on Peconic Avenue on April 4, 2019. Crews from the first-due engine put a quick stop to the fire. No injuries were reported.

2-House Fire in Hempstead On April 3, 2019, the Hempstead Fire Department was called to a house fire on Linden Avenue between Peninsula Boulevard and Laurel Avenue.

Firefighters were met with heavy fire in two private dwellings on Linden Avenue. The fire went on to reach a multiple alarm equivalency bringing various mutual aid units to the scene and to standby. During the operation firefighters briefly turned to an exterior operation when conditions worsened. The fire was under investigation and all fire units were under the command of Hempstead Chief of Department Giardino.

Deer Park Commercial Fire The Deer Park Fire Department was called to a building fire on Brook Avenue on the night of March 15, 2019. Third Assistant Chief Macaluso arrived to smoke showing from a garage door of a single-story commercial building that housed multiple businesses. Chief of Department Scarfi arrived a short time later. First and Second Assistant Chiefs Jacob and Heissenbuttel, along with Chief Macaluso handled the fire attack and checked surrounding businesses.

The fire was knocked down quickly and was under control within an hour. Mutual aid came from Dix Hills, West Islip and North Babylon.

3 in 2 Hours: Just One of Those Days for Wantagh In the span of less than two hours on the afternoon of March 27, 2019, the Wantagh Fire Department responded to three fully involved car fires, with one in each zone of the Fire District. The first call came in at 1445 for a car fire near Merrick Road and the Wantagh Parkway. Engines 1 and 5 responded and the crew of Engine 1, led by Lieutenant Steve Burke extinguished the flames. The second alarm came in at 1515 for Manchester Road. Engines 8 and 4 responded and the crew from Engine 8, led by Captain Bill VanLeer attacked the fire. At about 1630 a third alarm came in for the Southern State Parkway in the vicinity of the Wantagh Parkway. Engines 2, 4 and 7 responded with Engine 4, led by Lieutenant Nick Finocchio completing the task of putting the fire out. Although unusual, there was nothing suspicious about the incidents.

Ridge Car Fire At about 0630 on March 4, 2019, the Brookhaven National Lab and Ridge Fire Departments responded, along with Suffolk Police, to a car fire in the southbound lanes of the William Floyd Parkway, about three-quarters of a mile north of Longwood Road.

Fully Involved in Glen Cove

On April 7, 2019, the Glen Cove Fire Department was called to a house fire on Stanco Street off Grove Street. With Glen Cove Tiller 5211 out of service at the time, Sea Cliff was notified to respond with Ladder 574. As firefighters were en route they were advised of a fully engulfed second floor of a 2-1/2 story private dwelling.

Among the departments called for mutual aid were Locust Valley, Oyster Bay and Glenwood. The cause of the fire, which extended to the attic of the home, was under investigation. All fire department units were under the command of Glen Cove Chief of Department Marino.

Quick Work in Hicksville On March 9, 2019, the Hicksville Fire Department responded to a report of a bedroom fire on Bunker Lane. Upon arrival, fire was visible from the front of the house. Engine 933 made an aggressive attack on the fire, quickly knocking it down.

Vehicle Fire in E. Farmingdale

On May 8, 2019, the East Farmingdale Fire Company was activated for a vehicle fire on Carolyn Boulevard. Assistant Chief 1-5-31 arrived to fire in the cab of a work vehicle that was in a lot directly behind the location given. The updated location, which was on Allen Boulevard was a facility for airline and airport equipment.

The crew of Engine 2 quickly knocked down the fire without further incident.

Well Involved in Bethpage The Bethpage Fire Department was alerted for a building fire at Francesco’s Bakery on South Broadway about 2330 on April 28, 2019. Engine 9044 was first on the scene along with Chief of Department Urbanick, First Assistant Chief Isernia, Second Assistant Chief Castles and Third Assistant Chief Debobes to find the building well involved. With multiple engines on hydrants, numerous handlines were put into operation as were three tower ladders after members who had originally made an interior attack, were pulled out of the building when the fire went through the roof. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control but units were on scene for several hours hitting hot spots.

Mutual aid came from Hicksville, South Farmingdale, Plainview, Syosset, Farmingdale, Massapequa, Levittown, North Bellmore, Wantagh and Westbury. One firefighter was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

Possible Arson in Brentwood

The Brentwood Fire Department was called to a house fire on Sherman Street about 0130 on May 12, 2019. First Assistant Chief Kelly arrived to a single-story home well involved with fire through the roof. Engine 3-2-2’s crew, along with additional arriving engine crews, stretched four lines with three going into operation. The crews from Ladder 3-2-28 and Heavy Rescue 3-2-18 searched and vented. It took about an hour and 15 minutes to bring the fire under control with one firefighter injured with burns to the arm. East Brentwood was requested as an additional ladder and Commack was requested for RIT. Chief of Department Boyle was in charge of the scene and the cause of the fire was under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.

EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND

Emergency Landing in Valley Stream On April 14, 2019, the Valley Stream Fire Department was activated for a reported plane crash with possible fire on Clarendon Drive. Commanding units advised of a small plane down, negative crash, negative fire. The pilot and two passengers were self-extricated with only minor injuries. The plane made the emergency landing on the residential street due to low fuel.

When landing, the plane became partially caught up in power lines and came within feet of a house.

Merritts Road LIRR Crossing Hit The Farmingdale Fire Department, Nassau County Police, MTA Police, Nassau County Fire Marshal, LIRR Fire Marshal and LIRR personnel responded to an accident at the Merritts Road crossing about 1745 on May 8, 2019. A tractor trailer was struck by an eastbound train going to the Farmingdale station.

The driver of the truck exited the vehicle before it was hit and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Squad 924, Ladder 926, Ambulance 9299 and Fire Police 927 responded to the scene, while ambulances from North Massapequa, Bethpage and Nassau County Police responded. There were approximately a thousand people on the train at the time and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the accident was under investigation. Chief of Department DiBartolo was in charge of fire units on scene.

Close Call at Lacrosse Game On May 19, 2019, Ronkonkoma Fire Department EMS was covering a lacrosse tournament in Holbrook, when they responded for a player who had suffered a neck injury. The player was Fire News Editor Gary Joyce’s grandson, Travis Joyce. Ronkonkoma EMTs, along with Riverhead Lacrosse Coach Matt Wallace, an LPN and ex-Captain with the Wading River Fire Department, packaged Travis and transported him to Stony Brook Medical Center, where — thankfully — no serious damage was found. Our editor wishes to thank the Ronkonkoma Fire Department crew, Travis’ coach, and the staff of the Stony Brook Pediatric ER department for the job they performed. On another note, the best of youth sports was also on display, as the opposing team from Eastport South Manor Lacrosse knelt at the ambulance to wish Travis well as he was being loaded.

Car Into School in North Merrick On April 3, 2019, the North Merrick Fire Department was dispatched to a car-versus-building call at the rear of the Merrick Avenue Middle School. North Merrick First Assistant Chief Chris Fasano requested North Merrick Heavy Rescue 678 and an ambulance due to the heavy entrapment on scene.

Moments after Heavy Rescue 678 put multiple tools in operation, Nassau County Police ESU arrived to assist. It took roughly 25 minutes to extricate the driver who was the only occupant in the vehicle. The driver was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. North Bellmore was called to the scene for their technical rescue team and all fire department units were under the command of Chief Fasano.

Entrapment on North Wantagh Ave. On March 29, 2019, at 2229, the Bethpage and Levittown Fire Departments were alerted for an MVA with entrapment at the intersection of North Wantagh Avenue and Universe Drive. Fatality at End of Car Chase in Hempstead The Hempstead Fire and Police Departments and an ambulance from the South Hempstead Fire Department responded to an MVA at Baldwin Road and Acacia Avenue just after midnight on March 19, 2019. A car being chased by another, was rear ended and sent off the road and into a hydrant, a tree and a house. The car that rearended it hit a parked taxi and came to a stop a block away. The driver of the first car was pronounced dead at the scene and a passenger was seriously injured. The driver of the second car was uninjured and later arrested on multiple charges.

2 Injured, 1 Extrication in Hempstead At least two people were injured in a two-vehicle MVA at the intersection of Peninsula Boulevard and Madison Avenue in Hempstead on March 17, 2019.

One person was trapped in one of the cars and Hempstead firefighters had to used hydraulic tools to cut away part of the vehicle to gain access.

Ambulances from Hempstead and Northwell Health were on the scene.

Fatality at DUI MVA in N. Massapequa

The North Massapequa Fire Department, New York State Police and Nassau County Police responded to an MVA with entrapment on the westbound Southern State Parkway between Exits 30 and 29 about 0015 on April 19, 2019. An SUV was hit from behind by a sedan and sent off the road into several trees. Chief of Department Pesale and First Assistant Chief Maroldo arrived and confirmed that one person was trapped and one, the driver was in traumatic arrest. The driver of the SUV was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital by

Ambulance 667 where he succumbed to his injuries. The passenger was trapped and had to be extracted by the crew of Heavy Rescue 664 and was taken to Nassau University Medical Center by Ambulance 668. The crew from Engine 663 stretched a precautionary line during the extrication and secured the vehicle. The driver of the sedan was uninjured and taken into custody and later charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.

Extrication in Wantagh

On April 22, 2019, the Wantagh Fire Department was alerted for a an MVA with entrapment in the vicinity of Sunrise Highway and Old Mill Road in Wantagh. Rescue 5, led by Captain Alex Errico, was first on scene and he gave a quick size up to Chief of Department Joe Gross III, who assumed command. There was one vehicle involved and one person requiring extrication. Squad 1,

Engine 2, and Rescues 1 and 5 worked the scene along with NCPD ESU. The victim was triaged and transported by members of Rescue 1 to Nassau University Medical Center for further evaluation.

Domino Effect MVA On March 27, 2019, Medford Volunteer Ambulance was activated for an MVA on Route 112. Unit 5-3421 was met with a three-car MVA and advised incoming units of no entrapment. One vehicle was rear ended by two other vehicles. Two of the drivers refused medical attention, a passenger from the rearended vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital for her injuries via Medford Ambulance 5-34-20.

Fatality in East Farmingdale MVA

Deer Park Handles Jackknifed Trailer

The East Farmingdale Fire Company responded to an MVA with overturn on the eastbound Southern State Parkway between New Highway and Wellwood Avenue on April 24, 2019. A minivan collided with another vehicle, went off the road and overturned into the woods landing on its wheels. Five people were in the minivan; three were ejected and had serious injuries, one person suffered non-life-threatening injuries and one person was uninjured. Chief of Department Iuzzini requested multiple ambulances and a Suffolk County Police helicopter. Crews from Heavy Rescue 1-5-4, and Ambulances 1-5-8 and 1-5-10 removed the injured and secured the vehicle. Three of the injured were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital by Ambulance 1-5-8, North Lindenhurst Ambulance 1-117 and Farmingdale Ambulance 9299. On May 1, 2019, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a tractor trailer that jackknifed into the woods on Commack Road.

The tractor trailer crossed over the center divider while traveling north and crashed into woods on the southbound side. One person was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in unknown condition.

Overturn MVA on 347 The Suffolk Police and Nesconset Fire Department responded to an accident on Nesconset Highway (Route 347) between Southern Boulevard and Terry Road on May 7, 2019. A car traveling westbound on Route 347 lost control, crashed into a utility pole, splitting it in half, and then overturned off the road. Firefighters extinguished a small fire in the engine and secured the vehicle. Two occupants in the car were transported by Nesconset Fire Department ambulances to Stony Brook University Hospital suffering various nonlife-threatening injuries.

Bellport Handles 2-Car MVA On May 8, 2019, the Bellport Fire Department and South Country Ambulance Company were activated for an MVA on the westbound Sunrise Highway just east of exit 55. Interesting Objet d’ Planter The Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department responded when the driver of a panel van was forced to swerve off the roadway to avoid an accident on Nassau Boulevard near Princeton Street in Garden City South on April 26, 2019. The van struck a decorative, brick planter in the corner of a nearby service station. The vehicle was stuck on top of the planter until a tow truck was able to pull it back onto the roadway. NYPD Officer Killed in Lynbrook MVA

Oceanside House Fire

Late on April 11, 2019, the Oceanside Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on Southard Avenue between Allen Avenue and Nassau Parkway.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they were met with a fully involved 1-1/2 story private dwelling. Oceanside Terrace Engine 248 arrived and stretched a 2-1/2 inch line due to the heavy fire load.

Among the departments called for mutual aid were Baldwin, Freeport, Long Beach and Island Park. All fire department units were under the command of Oceanside Ex-Chief Kevin Klein.

Lindenhurst Car Fire While covering for the Lindenhurst Fire Department, the North Lindenhurst Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at 31st Street and Buffalo Avenue on April 27, 2019. The driver stopped at a stop sign, noticed the car overheating, and exited the vehicle. The car then caught fire and was involved within a couple of minutes. Engine 1-11-1 and Heavy Rescue 1-11-5 responded and crews used one line to extinguish fire in about 15 minutes. Second Assistant Chief Stallone was in charge of the scene.

The crash ripped off the roof and one side of the truck and scattered some of the contents onto the roadway. There were no injuries and State Police were on the scene. The incident was in the Lakeview Fire District.

Massapequa Installation

On May 11, 2019, the Massapequa Fire Department held its 109th Annual Installation Dinner at the Huntington Hilton in Melville. Point Lookout-Lido Installation

On the evening of May 3, 2019, the Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department held its 88th annual inspection dinner. The event was held at the Sands on Lido in Lido Beach. During the ceremony the department’s chiefs and company officers for 2019 - 2020 were installed. Leading the department for the year ahead is Chief of Department Jared Siegelman, First Assistant Chief James Guerin,

Second Assistant Chief William Wade, and Medical Chief David Neubert. Chief Brian Guerin was recognized for his time in office and spoke briefly. Several chief’s awards were given out to members who stood out in the past year. The best of luck to all those installed into office.

Bonner Attends Sound Beach Installation On April 13, 2019, Councilwoman Jane Bonner (left) attended the Sound Beach Fire Department’s annual installation dinner at East Wind Long Island in Wading River where she honored the company’s members for their service to the Sound Beach community.

Certificates of Congratulations were presented to the Members of the Year, members with Years of Service milestones and outgoing officers. Pictured with the Councilwoman are Sound Beach Fire Department member Tom Heemsoth and his wife Deborah. In February of this year, Mr. Heemsoth received a life-saving kidney transplant from his wife. National Junior Firefighter of the Year On April 26, 2019, at the NVFC annual awards banquet in Alexandria, Virginia, Junior Firefighter Robert Dowd, 17, of the Syosset Juniors was presented with the National Junior Firefighter Award. Dowd was nominated by his advisors along with support letters given by the Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association and the Haverlah Fire Department in Germany for his major contribution to the junior programs in Nassau County. Dowd was joined by is family, Syosset Fire Department members, and members from two German fire departments to accept this prestigious award.

Robert Dowd grew up watching his father respond to calls as a member of the Syosset Fire Department, so it was not surprising when he joined the junior firefighter program and displayed a strong passion for the fire service. Soon thereafter, he stepped up to lead this group and make it a place where others wanted to spend their time. He rose quickly through the junior ranks: first as a secretary, then lieutenant, and then captain, which is a position he holds today. His peers could see how excited he was to be a part of this program, and his leadership is the reason membership increased by 50 percent within his first year.

Based on Dowd’s commitment and dedication to the Syosset Juniors,

he was asked to run for secretary of the Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association (NCJFA) and was elected in 2O17. Again, he rose quickly to become president of the association in 2018. He currently serves on the organization’s board as the one of the youngest directors.

As a member of a committee that worked on an international exchange program between junior firefighter programs in the US and Germany, Dowd participated in a week-long trip to Germany where he addressed 10 different junior companies about the fire service in the United States. In a two-hour meeting with the deputy director of the German Fire Service, Dowd spoke about the importance of having an exchange program and laid out a detailed plan for the program. Because of his efforts, eight juniors from Germany will be attending the NCJFA’s fire camp this July, and there will be a group attending in 2020.

Fire News Editor Dennis Whittam Honored On May 14, 2019, firefighter and Fire News Editor Dennis Whittam, was honored by the Suffolk County Legislature for his dedication to the fire and emergency services of Long Island.

A lifetime supporter of the fire service, Dennis’ passion for the fire service started in the late 1950s as he chased after his dad, who was a member of the FDNY assigned to Engine Company 233 and later, Engine 291.

One would have thought that Dennis would have joined the FDNY, but his career path took him in to teaching and he became a teacher in Lynbrook, NY. Throughout his career as an educator, Dennis’ passion for the fire-rescue and emergency services continued to grow. Moving to Suffolk County in the mid 80s, it didn’t take long for Dennis to become a member of the Terryville Fire Department in Port Jefferson Station.

After serving as Captain, Dennis pursued his passion to promote firefighters. What better way to do this than to make sure every edition of Fire News had photos in it that were taken by ex-Captain Whittam?

Dennis was soon seen with his camera at firematic events throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties, and New York City. Thanks to Fire News Publisher Frank Trotta and Executive Editor Tim Edwards, Dennis was promoted to Editor. Now with a newspaper that has served firefighters since 1973 behind him, Dennis and Fire News, with an army of talented photographers and advertisers behind them, were able to make sure that the fire-rescue and emergency services was represented in a positive way.

If you speak with Dennis, it doesn’t take long before you realize that his goal of honoring the service of all responders through professional photographs continues to be strong. He is still a volunteer, as a Safety Officer for the Terryville Fire Department, and still manages to attend events that are held to honor all firefighters.

Dennis would like to thank Suffolk County Legislators Rudy Sunderman of the Third Legislative District, Kara Hahn of the Fifth Legislative District, and Tom Donnelly of the Seventeenth Legislative District, for honoring him for his dedication and service to the Suffolk County Fire-Rescue and Emergency services, the Terryville Fire Department, the Vocational Educational and Extension Board, the FDNY and Fire News.

Street Re-Named for FDNY’s John Vigiano On May 11, 2019, the town of Deer Park renamed Long Island Avenue after FDNY Captain John Vigiano. The Sons of Italy Constantino Brundi Lodge 2211, the Deer Park Fire Department and other town organizations, worked with the Town of Babylon for the renaming of the street. John and Jan Vigiano lost both of their sons John and Joseph in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. John passed away in July 2018 from cancer. John was a retired Captain with the FDNY, a former member of the Deer Park Fire Department and the past-President of The Sons of Italy Constantino Brundi Lodge. John would travel down to Washington, DC, to visit the wounded at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and also helped raise money for our wounded soldiers with Gary Sinise for The Gary Sinise Foundation. In attendance for the street naming was John’s wife Jan, his grandchildren, John’s and Joe’s wives, FDNY Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, Captain of Ladder 176 Mark Gregory (John’s ladder company before he retired), US Congressman Peter King, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and many other dignitaries.

$2 Million Almost Goes Up In Smoke in Manorville Looking back, a GardaWorld armored truck, carrying close to $2 million, caught fire while westbound on the Long Island Eexpressway between exits 69 and 68. The Manorville Fire Department, Manorville Ambulance, and Suffolk Policel responded. The driver of the truck reportedly ran over a matress and it lodged in his rear axle or driveshaft and the friction ignited the mattress. Two lanes of the westbound L.I.E. were closed for the duration.

Classic Crash at Smithaven Mall The Centereach and Nesconset Fire Departments, along with Suffolk Police, operated at an MVA at the Smithaven Mall on May 9, 2019. A classic Chevelle SS apparently lost control during a test drive and hit an SUV. Three occupants of the vehicles were injured and transported by Centereach and Nesconset ambulances to Stony Brook University Hospital suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Interesting MVA Result in Jericho On May 6, 2019, at 2219, the Jericho Fire Department was alerted for an MVA on Brush Hollow Road in Westbury. Arriving units found a car resting on the hood of two parked cars. The driver was not injured and Heavy Rescue 949 used its winch to pull the car off of the other two cars.

NY State Takes Away First Responder’s Benefit

Update In October of 2017 New York State Department of Financial Service (DFS) notified all insurance carriers who wrote Accident and Health policies for emergency service departments and fire districts, that “illness” had to be removed. Since being notified, these carriers, along with our politicians and district associations, have been working vigorously to get this coverage reinstated.

We are happy to announce that at least one of the insurance carriers, ESIP, has been approved to add the coverage back into their policies by endorsement. There will now be a permanent physical impairment benefit due to illness and a weekly disability benefit for illness due to total or partial disability. This coverage refers to, “any disease, illness or infection caused by, or resulting directly from, the covered person’s participation in a covered activity.” Cardiac malfunction is included in the definition; however, this does not include conditions such as hypertension or angina. A stroke or aneurysm is also included in the coverage.

There is also a “loss of life” benefit that would cover a person if the death was attributable to a cardiac malfunction resulting from an accident during participation in a covered activity.

Please remember these coverages are “line of duty” only.

McNeil and Company (aka, ESIP) added this endorsement as of March 22, 2019, to all their existing policies at no charge to their policy holders.

VFIS is aware of the change of position of the NYSDFS as it regards illness on the accident policy, and they are working on this matter.

Elmont FD Elects Robert Falco as Chief A 20-year veteran of the fire service, 38-year-old Robert Falco, is currently serving his first term as Chief of the Elmont Fire Department. Born and raised in Elmont, Falco is a graduate of Sewanhaka High School. Falco is employed full-time with the Franklin Square Water District.

Falco served three years as a company officer, including Lieutenant and Captain with Engine 2. He has also been involved in the Fire Prevention Committee and Recruitment Committee.

Initially Falco started with the Heavy Rescue Company in 1999. He served as 1st Assistant Chief last year under now former Chief Joey Luckman.

“I think my dad would be proud of me.

This is like a dream come true," said Falco, whose father Anthony passed away in 2009, had his uncles and best friend walk him into the Falco said his focus is on moving forward and helping to increase the recruitment to Elmont’s Junior Explorers program, and training. “I want to ensure everyone gets home safe after every call,” said Falco.

“Go out there, stay safe, do your job and go home to your family.”

Falco lives in Elmont with his wife Jennifer and their five-year-old daughter Amanda, who has firefighting dreams of her own.

The Suffolk County Urban Search and Rescue Team, under the leadership of Program Manager Brett Martinez, recently held a training session to hone the teams skills for shoring up structures.

Halpin Memorial Service

The Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association and Ladies Auxiliary held the 81st Annual Reverend John P. Halpin Memorial Service at the Medford Fire Department.

Reverend John Fleishmann, Chaplain of the SCVFA, gave the invocation. Singing the National Anthem was Nicolette Tingo from Shoreham-Wading River High School. With a large turn out from fire departments from all over Suffolk County they stood in line as the deceased members names were called off. Members of the East Hampton and Bridgehampton Fire Departments trained together at a residence slated for demolition on Daniels Lane in Bridgehampton on May 1, 2019. Nassau Fire Commission Awards

The Nassau County Fire Commission held its awards ceremony on April 17, 2019, at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Educational Center. The event began with a pledge to the flag led by Commissioner Tony Pluto. The color guard was provided by the Uniondale Fire Department. Reverend Kevin Smith then followed with the invocation. The microphone was then turned over to the master of ceremonies — Assistant Chief Fire Marshal John J. Priest, Jr., who introduced the guests on hand. Commissioner John Hennig, Chief Fire Marshal Scott Tusa, and County Executive Laura Curran also made remarks. Following these remarks came the presentation of awards.

The awards presented were: Gold Medals of Valor went to Firefighters Conor Jacoby and Michael Sokol, and Lieutenant Steven Waldron (New Hyde Park Fire Department) for their life saving actions at a house fire on December 30, 2018.

Silver Medals of Valor went to Lieutenant Dominic Buffolino (Westbury Fire Department) for his life saving actions at a Post Avenue building fire on February 20, 2018; and Firefighter Justin Fitzmartin (Long Beach Fire Department) for his life saving actions at a water rescue on September 21, 2018.

Bronze Medals of Valor to Lieutenant Andrew Carlson (East Meadow Fire Department) and Firefighter Joseph Abukoush (New Hyde Park Fire Department) for their life saving actions at a house fire on December 30, 2018.

Stony Brook MCI Drill The sixth annual Stony Brook University Hospital Mass Casualty Incident was staged on April 16, 2019, at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

This year, the MCI was fashioned after an explosion in the bleacher end of the arena, causing injuries to people in and under the bleachers.

Ambulances from as far as Amagansett and New Hyde Park participated in the exercise with EMS crews on scene and transporting patients to the Stony Brook University Hospital ER. The main purpose of the MCI was to stress the ER facility with up to 50 injuries within a 60 to 90 minute time frame. The Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance corps was the lead EMS participant. Student volunteers were given various injuries resulting from an explosion. The wounds were excellent replicas of what might have actually happened. After all 50 of the wounded were transported, the exercise ended with a discussion session.

Roosevelt Installation and Awards

The Roosevelt Fire Department held its 107th annual installation dinner dance on April 13, 2019, at Jericho Terrace in Mineola. At the event, Derrick Fennell, now one of the department’s Commissioners, was recognized for his time served in the chief’s office, which recently ended. The chiefs and line officers along with other positions within the department were installed. Leading the department for the year ahead are: Chief of Department Chris Wint; First Assistant Chief Aaron Martin, Jr.; and Second Assistant Chief Hector Tyler, Jr. Other awards presented included, among others, EMT of the Year and Probationary Member of the Year. The best of luck to all those installed into office and congratulations to those awarded.

Selden Memorial Park Honors Chief Seaman

On April 6, 2019, the chiefs, officers and members of Chief Arnold Seaman Engine Company 2 of the Selden Fire Department dedicated a new Memorial Park, which honored Chief Arnold Seaman, who died in the Line of Duty in 1969. The new Memorial Park, located on Dare Road and Hawkins Avenue, honors the life of Chief Seaman as a volunteer in the fire service.

On April 13, 1969, the Selden Fire Department answered multiple alarms after a busy day on April 12. Chief Seaman was at a second call for that day when Selden was activated for a third, a fire at Newfield High School. Chief Seaman, while responding, was involved in an auto accident at the corner of Hawkins Road and North Bicycle Path with another vehicle. After being transported to Mather Hospital, he was pronounced dead. Chief Seaman, at the age of 32 with a wife and two young children at home, gave the ultimate sacrifice. The department never forgot their fallen member and his family. This beautiful park is a reminder that the fire service never forgets their own.

Brookhaven Fire Police Brunch

On April 7, 2019, the Brookhaven Town Fire Police Association held their 2019 installation and awards brunch. Congratulations to President Bill Theis as he leads the organization in 2019. Obituary

Blue Point’s Michael B. Friscia, Jr.

The Blue Point Fire Department and the Junior Drill Teams are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of 14-year-old Michael B. Friscia, Jr., a longtime active member of the Blue Point Fire Department’s Junior’s Team.

Michael was waked at Raynor D’Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville on April 30, 2019. Department services were held that evening.

The department and the family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support over the loss of Michael.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship has been set up in his memory.

Donations can be mailed to: the Blue Point Fire Department, c/o the Michael Friscia Memorial Scholarship, 205 Blue Point Avenue, Blue Point, NY 11715. The scholarships will benefit both the Connetquot and Bayport-Blue Point School District.

Van Guard’s Robert Gilman

It is with deep regret and heavy hearts that the Van Guard Hose Company and 40 Thieves Drill Team Alumni announced the passing of Van Guard ex-Captain Robert ‘Bobby’ Gilman who was laid to rest on April 16, 2019.

Bobby joined the fire department in 1955 and raced Old Fashioned with the Van Guards in the 1960s when they made their return to competition.

Obituary

Westhampton Beach’s Donald W. Griffin The Westhampton Beach Fire Department mourned the loss of 58-year member Donald W. Griffin who passed away at his home on March 31, 2019. Don was 84 at the time of his death.

A native of Southampton, he was a star catcher for his Su?olk County champion high school baseball team. After graduating from Cortland State College he moved to Westhampton Beach where he taught for 36 years. He coached baseball and soccer and later umpired baseball games. He was also a time keeper at soccer matches and basketball games.

He and his wife of 61 years, May (Frankenback), raised four children in Westhampton Beach where he joined the fire department in 1961. The department was his second family.

During his time there he was a firefighter, driver, and later an active member of the fire police. He also served as President of the Benevolent Association, Treasurer, and a Fire Education Instructor.

Memorial donations may be made to the Westhampton Beach Fire Department’s Benevolent Fund or Scholarship Fund, or to the Hurricane Education Foundation through the Westhampton Beach School District.

16th Annual Blessing of the Bikes The Riders of Fire Motorcycle Club held their 16th annual Blessing of the Bikes. They want to thank the motorcycle community and the supporters for helping make this a great event every year. A thank you goes out to Suffolk County Police and the Brookhaven Fire Police Association for road blocking, making it a safe ride from Applebee’s in Farmingville to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in Manorville. Some of the money raised from the event is donated to the Volunteer Firefighter Burn Center at Stony Brook University Hospital, The Firemen’s Home on the Hudson, and The Firefighters Cancer Network, along with many other organizations that are in need throughout the year. A special thank you goes out to Jodi Giambrone for singing the national anthem.

Putting Old Equipment to Good Use

The Nesconset Fire District recently donated equipment, which was taken out of service, to Brigandi Brothers Automotive Repair Center of Smithtown. Saladino Dedicates Street In Memory of Fallen FDNY Hero From Farmingdale Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand conducted a ceremonial street renaming dedication in honor of fallen FDNY hero Captain John S. Moschella, who died in the line of duty as a result of cancer he developed after being exposed to toxins while working at Ground Zero in the days following the 9/11 attacks. The ceremony included a street sign unveiling at the corner of Rita Place and Crestwood Boulevard in Farmingdale. The sign, reading “FDNY Captain John S. Moschella Way,� is situated near the home where Captain Moschella, a 1984 graduate of Farmingdale High School, was raised.

During his 28-year tenure with the FDNY, Captain Moschella earned the respect of his colleagues with his dedication, caring and attention to detail. To those who had the pleasure to know John, it was no surprise that he was able to leave such an indelible mark, both socially and professionally.

Captain Moschella made countless friends, was a devoted husband, and loved the FDNY and sports. Even after being diagnosed with 9/11 related cancer, John always had a smile on his face and was filled with optimism. He fought cancer as he lived his life, with courage, strength and an unwavering warrior spirit.

Embracing your Resources: Fire Police As a past Chief I can not express enough my appreciation for the men and women that serve as our Fire Police. I have heard many members say that fire police members are only there because they can not fight fires any more and just want to go to the scene. The most upsetting comments I have heard come from some senior members that legitimately are unable to fight fires anymore and they refuse to participate in our fire police squad because they claim fire police is for the “old guys� and they are not old enough to be on fire police.

To those members I say, you are not realizing the importance and responsibilities of fire police and your experience would be a great asset.

The men and women who serve as fire police take on a tremendous responsibility.

Besides attending regular training, they are there to protect everyone operating at an incident, training or event. They are not just responsible to provide protection for the emergency responders, but they are also responsible, as is the incident commander, to protect any other agency operating such as the police, utility companies, tow truck operators and all those involved including the bystanders and onlookers.

We have all read the articles and statistics that there are more injuries and fatalities to emergency responders on roadways and we

must take this issue seriously.

The fire police are responsible for redirecting vehicular and pedestrian traffic to insure traffic flow to allow additional emergency vehicles access without additional accidents occurring. They must properly secure the scene so no other vehicle or pedestrian interferes, disrupts or endangers themselves or others. If there appears to be a serious and immediate danger to members they must react very quickly to alert everyone via radio or whistle of the quickly approaching hazard. If you hear this warning DO NOT take it lightly their actions may save your life.

Chiefs MUST take the appropriate actions to supply the Fire Police with the proper equipment and personnel so they can carry out their responsibilities effectively.

Fire police should not operate alone, they should be radio equipped, a second fire police unit should be available if you have the personnel to staff it, and don’t hesitate to get the local police to assist your fire police at the incident if staffing is low.

Fire police members and anyone assigned to assist with traffic control MUST have the proper reflective equipment and supplies for the road and weather conditions.

It is important that the IC communicates with the fire police once on scene for account-

ability and to confirm proper communications should there be an emergency. Get them any additional resources they may need. If the fire police member is working alone it is especially important you continually confirm this individual is safe and is OK. When it is time to release all units from the scene can be the most dangerous. The Chief MUST systematically release units and personnel so as not to create a new hazard of allowing traffic to flow into the scene prematurely.

The IC MUST make sure all those remaining on scene (utilities, tow trucks, police and bystanders) have been alerted that the fire units will be leaving the area and traffic will be entering the area. Many times the police will need to reposition their vehicles or request additional police vehicles to keep the scene safe after the fire department leaves.

Communicate with your fire police to advise them if you require them to remain on scene after other units are leaving. I recommend a chief or a second unit remain on scene with the fire police unit until they all leave the scene together.

Door Pop in Wantagh Wantagh firefighters of Engine 2 and Squad 1 had to pop the doors of a car involved in a two-car accident on May 2, 2019, at the intersection of Wantagh and Beltagh Avenues, at the entrance to Wantagh High School. Invisible Fence Donates Pet Masks

St. James Easter Fundraiser

Invisible Fence By Canine Control of Suffolk County has donated one set of specially-designed oxygen masks for pets to the Yaphank Fire Department and Ambulance Team.

The donation is part of the nationwide Project Breathe initiative, launched by the Invisible Fence brand to outfit first responders across the country with the life-saving resources.

Each set includes three reusable masks in different sizes that can be used on pets from small mammals like rabbits up through giant-breed dogs. They connect to the standard oxygen tanks.

Project Breathe was launched in 2007 by Invisible Fence after the company learned that an estimated 150,000 pets die in fires each year, with most succumbing to smoke inhalation. To date, more than 11,500 pet oxygen kits have been donated across the United States and Canada. Fire departments and emergency rescue squads that do not yet have the masks can request them through the Invisible Fence Project Breathe webpage.

Firehouse Kitchen With Host Ray Cooney

Guest For Lunch Ok, Firehouse Kitchen fans, you are not going to believe this. I had the great Gerard Kane, from Ladder 143, on yet again! This was Firefighter Kane's fifth time on Firehouse Kitchen. Since his first appearance, he has joined the show as one of the executive producers. There was one major difference about this appearance — it was live!

We are still working out the quirks, but be sure to tune in Tuesday mornings at 0930 on Facebook.

Gerard, with his recognizable deep voice and dry-wit, is always a pleasure to have on. I call him the ultimate story teller. His story telling became evident, yet again, as we were preparing his dish — Honey Mustard Chicken.

The story begins at Ladder 143 on a beautiful

spring/summer day. They were preparing one of their favorite meals, the “Job Sandwich.”

Firefighter Ray Moran, of Ladder 143, came up with this delicious concoction of chicken, eggplant, peppers, mozzarella, etc. (see recipe below). It got its name because every time they would eat this sandwich, they would get a job.

For all you non-firefighters, a job is what we call a fire. As soon as everyone got their sandwich, an alarm came out. It wasn’t a job, it was just a food-on-the-stove call. As Ladder 143 returned from responding to this fire, Firefighter Moran noticed a special guest at the table. The back door was left open and a squirrel decided to come in to see what all the fuss was about the job sandwich. Ray was furious. He yelled, some words I can’t write at the squirrel, chased it around the kitchen and out the back door. The firefighters laughed and Ray sat down at the table and picked up the half, squirrel-eaten sandwich and took a big bite. Gerard said, “Ray, what are you doing? Squirrels carry diseases!” and Ray’s reply was, “You want to get a job tonight, doncha’? Then you gotta’ eat a job sandwich!” That night, they got that job!

DANA SHAFFER JOINS SUPER VAC AND COMMAND LIGHT AS THE BRANDS’ NEW NORTHEAST SALES MANAGER

Dana Shaffer joins Super Vac and Command Light as the brands’ new Northeast Sales Manager. He brings more than 17 years of experience in the fire equipment industry, representing brands like MSA, Lion Fire Gear, Res-Q-Jack and Hurst Jaws of Life as part of Susquehanna Fire Equipment Co. Shaffer now represents Super Vac’s expansive lineup of ventilation equipment, as well as Command Light’s array of scene lighting products. The Super Vacuum Manufacturing brands on-boarded Shaffer earlier in the year. With the arrival of his demo truck this April, Shaffer has hit the ground running.

Shaffer also brings 20 years of fire service in the Bloomsburg, Pa., area, where he currently resides. Shaffer is experience in auto extrication, engine operations, ladder response and heavy rescue, as well as specialize rescues, like RIT team, hazard material and low- and medium-angle rope operations. During his time volunteering with the Epsy Fire Department, he held various positions and currently is the Rescue Chief. Shaffer has a background in heavy equipment operation and repair.
