It’s Been a Tough Month A lot has happened over the past month that has saddened us all. We lost FDNY Lt. Michael R. Davidson in a Harlem fire, we lost seven military personnel in a helicopter crash that happened in western Iraq, four of whom were locals and included Master Sergeant Christopher J. Raguso, an FDNY firefighter and a volunteer firefighter with the Commack Fire Department on Long Island; and Major Christopher Zanetis, an FDNY Fire Marshal. We also added to the list of FDNY firefighters who passed away from cancer that was attributed to their service on 9/11 and the months following this attack on our country.

As the month progressed, there was a fire at Trump Towers that claimed the life of a person who lived on the 50th floor of the building, and also injured several firefighters who were faced with the task of battling this blaze. If you are reading this editorial, you may know what it is like to push in on a violent fire.

I ask you, would a sprinkler system have resulted in a different outcome for this fire?

The upper floors of this building were not sprinklered. The building was completed in

1983, several years before sprinkler systems were mandated. Owners of older, residential high-rises are required to add the systems when major renovations take place.

Since June 2014, the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs have been asking for a change in the laws that effect home sprinkler systems. They have been asking our politicians to support laws that require home sprinkler systems. Every year in New York, more than 100 residents die as a result of a home fire and more than 1,000 are injured severely enough to require hospitalization.

The lack of home sprinklers puts everyone, including firefighters, at risk.

According to the NYSAFC, “the presence of a home fire sprinkler system has been proven to cut the risk of dying in a fire by 82 percent and reduce property loss by 70 percent. In addition, a home fire sprinkler system will stop a fire from growing and spreading out of control, preserving the integrity of the structure and preventing firefighter injuries and deaths.”

Fire News has informed you of The New York Sprinkler Initiative. This is a group of fire and life safety advocates, urging the New

York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council (NYS Code Council) to adopt the most recent building codes. Lightweight truss construction and the use of engineered lumber in construction are a danger to firefighters. Sprinklers could keep a fire in check until firefighters arrive on scene. If sprinklers are installed, residents will have time to escape the fire and firefighters will have more time to fight the fire before it grows out of control.

The fire at Trump Towers is proof that the lack of a sprinkler system puts life at risk. I urge you to visit the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs website to read about Fire Sprinkler Initiative News. … Dennis

On Saturday, May 19, 2018, the Fire Marshal Association of Suffolk County (FMASCO) will hold its 6th annual Shotgun Competition (Trap) and Barbeque at the Long Island Shooting Range in Ridge. Squad times are 0900 to 1300. Proceeds go towards the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighter Burn Center and Firefighters Cancer Support Network, New York. This event will be held on Saturday May 12, 2018, from 0900 to 1300 the Community Ambulance Company partnering with Legislator William Lindsay and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office will be providing free car seat inspections, Amber Alert Child identification cards and hands only infant and child CPR. Due to last year’s popularity with car seat inspections only two vehicles every 30 minutes can be inspected for a total of 16 vehicles during this event. Commack’s, FDNY’s Christopher Raguso

The funeral for FDNY Lieutenant and Commack Fire Department Honorary Chief Christopher Raguso. Raguso was serving with the New York Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing out of Westhampton Beach. He was on assignment in Iraq, when the helicopter in which he was flying with six other men crashed, killing all aboard.

Raguso, a Master Sergeant, was one of four 106th Rescue Wing members killed in the crash near the Syrian border. He was 39 years old and leaves his wife Carmella, and daughters Eva (five) and Mila (six).

A funeral was held at Saint Joseph’s Church in Kings Park on Saturday, March 31, 2018. More than 20,000 firefighters and members of the military paid their respects.

Westbury Fire Goes to 5 Alarms On March 19, 2018, the Westbury Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Cypress Lane West. Responding units could see the smoke from a distance. The fire heavily damaged the two-story home and reached a fifth alarm assignment. Chief of Department John Bartunek was in command of the operation.

North Patchogue House Fire

On March 26, 2018, the North Patchogue Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Schoenfeld Boulevard.

Command units were met with fire showing from the exterior of an attached garage. Command requested mutual aid from Blue Point, Patchogue, Medford and Hagerman. The fire was quickly knocked down by first-due crews without further incident. No injuries were reported.

Quick Stop in Brookhaven

The Brookhaven Fire Department made a quick stop of a structure fire on February 17, 2018, on Auborn Avenue. Chief Loiacono was first on scene, followed by 1st Assistant Chief DiPinto, Jr. Engine 5 was followed in by Engine 2 and Rescue 4. Mutual aid was called from Mastic, Yaphank and Center Moriches, along with South Country Ambulance.

Woman Saved at Holbrook Fire On March 20, 2018, the Holbrook Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Dover Court.

Chief Chris Heinssen arrived to find heavy fire showing from the home and requested mutual aid from Holtsville, North Patchogue and Sayville. Multiple attack lines were put into operation initially and command then went to exterior operations. The fire took over an hour to be placed under control and a large portion of the home was gutted.

One homeowner was asleep during the fire and saved by a passing Holtsville firefighter and two Suffolk County Police officers prior to FD arrival. The homeowner refused any medical attention. (See Up Close on page 87. — Ed.) - Fire News photos by Bryan Lopez and Dennis Berger

Coram Wraps Up the Year On December 31, 2017, the Coram Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Groton Lane. Command units were met with visible fire showing from the structure. Mutual aid was requested from Terryville and Selden. The fire was quickly knocked down by first-due crews without further incident.

Wantagh House Fire

The Wantagh Fire Department was called to a house fire on Island Channel Road in Seaford Harbor early on March 25, 2018. Second Assistant Chief Bloomfield arrived and encountered a heavily involved house with fire showing from the first and second floors on the exposure two and three sides. Engine 693, housed a few blocks away, immediately stretched a line to the house while the crew from

Engine 695 stretched a second line to protect the exposure two side.

Four handlines were stretched to bring the fire under control in about 45 minutes. Seaford was requested as a FAST and Massapequa for an additional ladder. Units from North Bellmore and North Massapequa stood by.

Quick Stop in Brentwood

The Brentwood Fire Department responded to a reported house fire on Grand Boulevard in Brentwood. Chief of Department Derbyshire arrived to smoke showing and requested mutual aid.

Arriving crews quickly went to work and with an aggressive interior attack and extinguished the fire in a matter of minutes. Mutual aid came from Islip, Central Islip, Bay Shore and Islip Terrace.

East Northport House Fire

The East Northport Fire Department responded to a house fire on Meadow Rue Lane in East Northport on March 30, 2018. The home was fully involved, but no occupants were home at the time. Mutual aid came from Northport, Greenlawn and Kings Park. Suffolk County Police officers — who entered to save a dog — suffered smoke inhalation and were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital by East Northport Fire Department Ambulance.

Landmark Structure Destroyed in Smithtown

On March 26, 2018, the Smithtown Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Edgewood Avenue.

Command units were met with a fully involved structure at the historic 173-yearold Mansion at Ebo Hill, a well-known landmark in the area. Command requested mutual aid from Saint James, Nesconset, Nissequogue, Hauppauge, Stony Brook and Kings Park, along with Central IslipHauppauge and Commack ambulances.

Operations were kept exterior only. The stubborn blaze burned for hours before being placed under control. The building burned to the ground and was a total loss.

Command requested a fire marshal to the scene for investigation.

Mulch Fire in Westbury

On March 20, 2018, the Westbury Fire Department was alerted for a building fire at the intersection of Kinkel and Main Streets. Arriving units found a 40foot high mulch pile on fire in a landscaping yard on Urban Avenue. Westbury set up their tower ladder and called in Hicksville and East Meadows to set up around the pile. The fire was extinguished and a pay loader was used to overhaul the pile.

Pet Shop Fire in Centereach On April 5, 2018, the Centereach Fire Department was activated for a reported commercial structure fire on Middle Country Road.

Chief 5-5-31 was met with visible fire and smoke showing from the structure. Command requested mutual aid from Stony Brook, Ronkonkoma, Nesconset, Coram and Holtsville. Many pets were saved from the pet shop in the building, but numerous pets perished. The ASPCA was requested to the scene for the animals.

Command also requested a fire marshal to the scene for an investigation.

Levittown Dumpster Fire

On April 5, 2018, the Levittown Fire Department responded to a dumpster fire in the driveway of a Glazer Lane home. Station #2 units extinguished the fire before it extended.

Baldwin Car Fire

The Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to a car fire at the intersection of Stowe Place and Kenneth Avenue on December 10, 2017. When firefighters arrived, they were met with a working car fire in the street on Stowe Place. Engine 203 stretched a line as did Engine 2033. All fire department units were under the command of Baldwin Chief of Department Frank Cesare.

LIE Car Fire On April 5, 2018 the Lakeland Fire Department was standing by covering alarms for the Ronkonkoma Fire Department and was activated for a vehicle fire on the westbound portion of the Long Island Expressway near Exit 61. Lakeland Engine 5 was met with a fully involved vehicle in the center lane of the expressway. Mutual aid came from Holtsville.

Summer Must Be Nigh On March 26, 2018, the Massapequa Fire Department responded to a BBQ fire on the rear deck of a home on Boston Avenue in Massapequa. First arriving units found the BBQ to be fully involved. One line was stretched and the fire was quickly knocked down.

Massapequa Solar Panel Fire On March 31, 2018 the Massapequa Fire Department responded to a solar panel fire on the roof of a home on Cedar Place in Massapequa. Chief of Department Beneville and Engine 6315 were first to arrive and found that the fire had been extinguished by a neighbor. Firefighters conducted an extensive check for extension.

No Extension in Bethpage On March 1, 2018, the Bethpage Fire Department responded to a house fire on Millpage Drive. Arriving units found a large dumpster fully involved with possible extension to a home. Engine 5 stretched a line and extinguished the dumpster as additional crews checked for extension inside the two-story home.

Ladder 3 removed the melted siding and found no extension.

Quick Stop at Setauket Boiler Blaze On March 15, 2018, the Setauket Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Shadetree Court.

Command units were met with an active fire in a boiler room. Mutual aid was requested from Stony Brook, Terryville and Centereach. The fire spread into the attic of the house. First -due crews made a quick, aggressive attack on the fire and it was knocked down without further incident. Command requested a fire marshal to the scene for investigation.

No injuries were reported.

Mt. Sinai: The Sun Also Fires*

On March 17, 2018, the Mt. Sinai Fire Department, responded to a with the help of the Miller Place, Sound Beach, Terryville and the report of flames coming from the roof of a home on Savanna Circle. Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance.

Collapse at East Islip Blaze

The East Islip Fire Department was called to a building fire on East Main Street on December 26, 2017. A responding member advised dispatch of fire through the roof of a two-story commercial building that housed a law office. Engine 3-5-3 put multiple 2-1/2 inch lines in operation along with the master streams from East Islip Ladder 3-5-5 and Central Islip Ladder 3-7-5, which both set up on the exposure 3 side.

Members had originally done an interior attack but were pulled after a collapse on the 2-3 corner. The fire was declared under control within two hours. Mutual aid came from Central Islip, Islip, West Sayville, Bay Shore, Brentwood, Islip Terrace and Great River to the scene along with Exchange Ambulance of the Islips, Bay Shore-Brightwaters Ambulance and Central Islip-Hauppauge Ambulance. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Chief Patrick Murphy and 62 members of the Central Islip Fire Department responded to a structure fire on O’Kane Street on March 16, 2018. Heavy fire was found on the second floor of the residence on arrival. A total of six CIFD units responded, and mutual aid was requested from Islip Terrace, East Brentwood and East Islip. The fire totaled the second floor and there was smoke and water damage throughout. The Central Islip-Hauppauge Ambulance was on scene but no injuries were reported, and the Suffolk County Arson Squad also responded to conduct an investigation.

Safety Officers Tools to Get the Job Done A Safety Officer’s response vehicle is a way of getting the job done. The needs of your department would be the best recommendation. Many of us will agree a dedicated Safety Car is of terrific value. Some agencies may keep an old chief’s or first responder car. Some, that have the budget and the concern for safety, provide a new vehicle.

The vehicle should have “Safety Officer” on both sides.

Having SO duty crews is an effective way to get your SO on scene early in an incident. Some have the SO respond directly to the incident in there POV, which should be an antiquated method at this point. Carrying turnout equipment inside of your vehicle is not a desirable choice. Not having lights and siren slows the response.

A radio, with all the frequencies should be available. I suggest two radios, one for responding and another for fire ground, if separate frequencies are being used during response. Listening to orders transmitted to responding vehicles, knowing what is responding and at the same time listening to anyone on scene is paramount to the SO. High visibility identification should be standard for all SOs. A vest with the word “Safety” should be highlighted and any other equipment the SO is wearing. The vest should be of the approved type. It should be bright colored and with light reflecting trim. It will be a constant reminder to all those on scene and an effortless way to identify the SO. A green helmet that identifies the SO, if that color is not being used by others, and a shield showing SO should also be worn.

Personnel Protective Equipment should be worn that coincides with the incident. Distinct types of calls, motor vehicle accidents, EMS, brush fires, structure fires and hazmat situations all require diverse types of PPE. High risk areas, and immediately dangerous to life and health situations should have special considerations.

Paperwork is part of the job in some cases. So, a clipboard with plastic cover to protect your notes from the weather is essential. A grease pencil would be handy to write notes.

Accident reports should be available along with check lists for the different incidents, computers, pencils, and any required forms for your SOP should also be carried. It is very important to keep a binder of any preplanned locations; i.e., schools, hospitals, large box-type buildings, sprinkler systems, fire load, etc.

As much information as you can store.

Zoning tape of assorted colors — especially red and white slashed or chevron tape which would show a no-entry zone — should be accessible to the SO. Yellow tape also should be available. I like to mark the area with yellow tape and everyone and anyone (media, law enforcement, etc.) on the incident side of the yellow tape should be on the accountability information.

Flashlight and a large hand-carried flood light to aid in illuminating larger areas and assist in reading smoke in many environments is needed. Thermal imaging cameras, helmet-cams, gas detectors and monitors, wind speed anemometer, whistles, electric current detection equipment, multipurpose hand tools and lock out/tag out kit and any other items based on local needs and experiences. Hicksville Handles Condo Fire On March 31, 2018, while taking up from another alarm, the Hicksville Fire Department was alerted for a dryer fire on Nicole Court in the Cambridge Court in Hicksville Apartments in Bethpage. Arriving units reported smoke showing. Engine 933 secured a water supply and stretched a line to the second floor of the two-story condo unit. The fire was extinguished just before it extended to the rest of the apartment.

Bethpage also responded and Chief of the Department Robert Telender, Jr., was in command.

Easter Day Fire in Selden On Easter Sunday the Selden Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire on Oakmont Avenue. Units arrived to find active fire in the bathroom. The flames were contained to the bathroom by a closed door and a quick thinking neighbor who directed a garden hose into the bathroom window. Chief of Department William Xikis was in command. Mutual aid came from Centereach, Farmingville, Coram and Gordon Heights.

Westbury Handles New Cassel Blaze On March 18, 2018, the Westbury Fire Department was alerted for a fire in a vacant home on Catherine Street in New Cassel. Crews were met with heavy smoke coming from the second floor of a two-story, boarded up home. Two lines were stretched and crews made an interior attack. Crews found holes in the staircase and throughout the second-story floors while truck companies searched for any squatters.

Venting the second floor was difficult due to the boards being bolted to the home. The fire was quickly knocked down and all searches were negative. Chief of the Department John Bartunek was in command. Mutual aid came from Hicksville, Jericho, Carle Place and East Meadow.

Ronkonkoma House Fire On March 10, 2018, the Ronkonkoma Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Coates Avenue North.

Upon arrival, Assistant Chief Eric Cook advised incoming units of a small exterior fire on the side of the home. First-due units extinguished the fire and checked for extension. Mutual aid was brought in from Farmingville and Nesconset via an automatic preplan.

House Saved in Roosevelt Car Fire On December 10, 2017, the Roosevelt Fire Department was dispatched to a car fire on Nassau Road off West Centennial Avenue. Nassau County Police advised of a car fire next to a house.

Firefighters were met with a fully involved car fire in the rear of the address. Firefighters put one handline into operation and were able to keep the fire from extending to the residence. Units were under the command of Roosevelt Chief of Department Fennell.

Fast Moving Fire in Mastic On Jnauary 2, 2018, the Mastic Fire Department was called out for a structure fire on Surrey Circle in Shirley in a mixed-use structure. There was an apartment on the second floor that was occupied at the time but the occupants got out with minor injuries. Mastic Fire Department Chief Rudy Sunderman requested mutual aid from Brookhaven, Center Moriches, Manorville and Ridge. Also on scene were Mastic Ambulance, Shirley Ambulance and Mastic Beach Ambulance, Brookhaven Fire Marshalls and Suffolk County Fire Coordinator, and Suffolk County Police.

Kitchen Fire in Franklin Square

Late on April 8, 2018, firefighters operated at the scene of a fire on Washington Street off Daffodil Street in Franklin Square. The main body of fire was in a kitchen on the first floor of a two-story private dwelling. Elmont was designated FAST, with West Hempstead as an additional truck. Despite Collyer’s Mansion conditions firefighters made a quick knockdown of the fire with two lines stretched off Franklin Square Engine 711. Mutual aid, either to the scene or as standby, came from Malverne, Floral Park, Stewart Manor and New Hyde Park. Fire department units were under the command of Franklin Square and Munson Chief of Department John Salzman.

Wantagh Stops Car Fire Extension The Wantagh Fire Department responded to a car fire in a driveway on Ewell Place on April 6, 2018.

The car was found to be fully involved upon the arrival of Chief of Department Joe Gross and Third Assistant Chief Lenny Mathewson. A quick response

by Engine 1 prevented the situation from worsening as the car was in close proximity to two houses; both houses sustained minor damage. Engine 5, and Rescues 1 and 5 were also on scene.

Storms and Fire in N. Massapequa On March 21, 2018, during the height of a fourth Nor’easter to hit the area, the North Massapequa Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Hunter Ridge Road. The house was unoccupied and undergoing renovations. Third Assistant Chief Frascella arrived to a fire in the kitchen on the first floor. Engine 665 stretched two lines into the house, while Ladder 661 set up in front and began laddering and venting. The crew from Bethpage Engine 5 stretched an additional line.

The fire was brought under control in about an hour.

Additional mutual aid was provided by Massapequa and Wantagh. Chief of Department Ferrara was in charge of the scene.

Frigid Fight in Central Islip Early on January 14, 2018, the Central Islip Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Applegate Drive. Bethpage House Fire On April 7, 2018, Nassau FIRECOM alerted the Bethpage Fire Department for a house fire with entrapment on Phyllis Drive. The occupant was out of the house upon arrival of firefighters. Assistant Chief John Castles was the IC. The fire extended up the exterior, and entered the second-floor bedroom and attic.

Engine 9055 stretched two lines. Engine 9077 assisted in stretching the second line to the ground floor, while Engine 9055 stretched upstairs. Ladders 3 and 4 laddered the second level and roof. Mutual aid responded from Hicksville, Plainview and Farmingdale, as well as standby from Syosset, Westbury and Plainview. Bethpage EMS was also on scene.

There was extensive damage to the bedroom and attic.

Massapequa Car Fire The Massapequa Fire Department was called to a reported car fire on Clocks Boulevard on March 8, 2018.

Second Assistant Chief Batt found an SUV fully involved. Engine 6314 and ladder 636 responded, one line was put into operation and the fire extinguished in about 15 minutes. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office and Nassau County Police Arson/Bomb Squad were requested to investigate.

Fully Involved at Massapequa Mall On April 5, Engine 6315 and Ladder 636 of the Massapequa Fire Department responded to a car fire in the Westfield Mall parking lot. Chief of Department Beneville was first to arrive and reported a fully involved vehicle fire.

EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND

N. Babylon MVA into Building The North Babylon Fire Company responded to an accident at Giovanni’s Pizza on Little East Neck Road on March 11, 2018. The driver of a sedan traveling east on Herzel Boulevard had an accident with another vehicle, swerved, went across the road and crashed into the building up to the counter, injuring an employee.

Engines 1-8-2 and 1-8-4, Ladder 1-8-6, Heavy Rescue 18-15, and Ambulances 1-8-7 and 1-8-14 responded under command of Chief of Department Caroleo. The two drivers and the person in the building all suffered minor injuries and were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.

Tree Takes Out 2 Vehicles On March 2, 2018, during a Nor’easter, a tree fell on a car on Oakfield Avenue, pulling wires and poles down on an occupied car and on Wantagh Fire Department 6920, which was driving behind it. The firefighter was able to safely get himself and the driver of the other car to safety.

Lakeland Handles Overturn On April 2, 2018, the Lakeland Fire Department was activated for an MVA with reported overturn on Express Drive North near Edgewood Avenue.

Commanding units were met with an overturned SUV against a tree with entrapment. Crews worked with SCPD ESU to extricate the female driver who was then transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for her injuries.

4 Injured in Baldwin MVA On March 13, 2018, the Baldwin Fire Department operated at the scene of an MVA with entrapment at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Florence Street. Baldwin firefighters, along with members of the Nassau County Police ESU, extricated at least one person. Four people were injured (one seriously) and transported to area hospitals. South Hempstead was requested for an additional ambulance. Nassau County Police were looking for a second vehicle that reportedly fled the scene. All fire department units were under the command of Baldwin Chief of Department Esposito.

3-Car DWI MVA, Multiple Ejections, 1 Fatality in Ridge

On March 31, 2018, the Ridge Fire Department was activated for an MVA with reported ejections on the eastbound portion of the Long Island Expressway, just east of Exit 68. Command units were met with an MVA involving a motorcycle, a minivan and a pickup and confirmed multiple ejections. Multiple SCPD Aviation units were requested and mutual aid was called from Yaphank, Gordon Heights, South Country and Hagerman. One patient was pronounced dead at the scene. Multiple patients were airlifted to Stony

Brook University Hospital with serious injuries while others were transported by ground to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Peconic Bay Medical Center. The driver of the pickup truck, who caused the accident, was arrested and charged with DWI. Suffolk County Police had the Long Island Expressway closed in both directions for a period of time for an accident investigation and cleanup.

Four Injured in Melville Crash The Melville Fire Department responded to a four-car crash that injured four people on Bagatelle Road and the South Service Road on April 7, 2018. The patients were transported with non-lifethreatening injuries to Huntington and Plainview Hospitals by the Melville Rescue Squad. Centerport Head-on Crash Injures Two The Centerport Fire Department responded to a head-on collision on Route 25A, east of Harbor Circle, on April 6, 2018. Both drivers suffered injuries and crews used heavy rescue tools to extricate one person, who was treated by Centerport EMS and airlifted by Suffolk Police Medevac to Stony Brook University Hospital. The second person was also transported to Stony Brook by Northport Fire Department ambulance.

Centerport units secured the landing zone, under the command of Assistant Chiefs Rich Miltner, Andy Heglund and Deputy Chief Medical Dr. Jack Geffken.

West Babylon DWI MVA

The West Babylon Fire Department and Suffolk Police responded to a single-vehicle accident on Little East Neck Road near Rutland Road near midnight on March 15, 2018. The driver of a SUV went off the road and struck a utility pole, snapping it and causing the vehicle to overturn onto its side, trapping the driver in the vehicle.

Engine 1-9-1, Heavy Rescue 1-9-15, Ambulance 1-9-7 and Fire Police 1-9-5 responded. The crew from 1-9-1 stretched a line, while

the crew from 1-9-15 put multiple tools into operation to cut all the posts and fold the roof down, extricating the driver in about 15 minutes. The driver was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries and was later charged with DWI. Chief of Department Schumann was in charge of the scene.

50th Anniversary Celebrated, 50-Year Member Honored at Huntington Ambulance Installation Congratulations were the order of the evening as Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) joined Huntington Community First Aid Squad (HCFAS) Chief Casey Orr, officers, commissioners, members and their families at the Squad’s 50th Anniversary Installation and Inspection Celebration on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at the Crest Hollow Country Club.

Legislator Donnelly presented a special 50th Anniversary Proclamation to the HCFAS, thanking everyone for their enduring dedication and commitment to community and also honored 50-year member Robert Loysch for five decades of volunteer service. New Rig in East Meadow On the night of March 31, 2018, members of East Meadow Engine Company No. 1 held a work detail to put their new apparatus, a 2018 Pierce, into service. The new rig, which replaces its 1995 predecessor, features a 700-gallon water tank and 35-gallon foam tank, among many other features. South Floral Park Scores a New Rig The new South Floral Park Fire Department Engine 182, a 2017 Rosenbauer, arrived at fire headquarters on February 11, 2018. The rig is the first new piece of apparatus that the department has had in many years and it replaces a Pierce once used by the Uniondale Fire Department. Aside from beginning to familiarize themselves with the ins and outs of the truck, members took many of the tools and equipment off the old 182 and moved it onto its replacement. 4th Battalion Fundraiser The Nassau County’s Fourth Battalion annual Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center Foundation Fundraiser was held on the afternoon of Sunday, April 15, 2018, at The Commuters Club in East Rockaway and featured music by The Switch and an appearance by the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums. While the event was attended by many members of the Fourth Battalion (made up of East Rockaway, Lakeview, Lynbrook, Malverne, and Rockville Centre) it was Lakeview who hosted it for 2018 and was instrumental in ensuring that everyone was well fed, and that the day ran smoothly.

2018 Wantagh Installation

The 119th Inspection and Installation Dinner of the Wantagh Fire Department was held on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at the Long Island Marriott. The highlights of the evening included the administration of the oath of office to the Officers, Assistant Chiefs and Chief of Department.

Joseph C. Gross III was installed Chief of Department for 2018.

Assisting Chief Gross are First Assistant Chief Kenneth S. Kelly, Second Assistant Thomas P. Bloomfield and Third Assistant Leonard J. Mathewson.

Chief Gross joined the Wantagh Fire Department in December 1995 as a member of Rescue 3 at the “Harbor House” in Seaford Harbor and later transferred to Engine 3. He was elected Lieutenant of Engine 3 in May of 2002 and served in that position until May, 2005 when he was elected Captain. He served as Captain until April 2007 before going back through the ranks as Lieutenant from May 2008 through December 2009 and Captain from January 2010 through December 2011. After many years of very active service, Chief Gross was elected Assistant Chief in January 2012 and served in that capacity until December 2017,

when he was elected Chief of Department. His wife, Lisa; father Joseph, Jr.; and brothers Michael and Christopher are all active members of the Department.

Sadly, two long-time active members died and were recognized for their service. Commissioner Craig J. Craft served approximately 34 years and was an active Fire Commissioner and the Commissioner of the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management when he died suddenly on September 13, 2017. Janice Daves was a EMT-CC for approximately 18 years before she succumbed to cancer on February 2, 2018. Both of these members will be missed, not only for their time and commitment to the community, but their friendship as well.

Service Awards were presented to 37 members for serving the residents of the Wantagh Fire District for anywhere from five to 45 years.

In addition, Unit Citations, Life Saving, Community Service and Chief's Awards were given to members for various acts of heroism and service.

Melville FD Donates Vehicle To Suffolk County Auxiliary Police

On April 11, 2018, the Suffolk County Police Chief of Department Stuart Cameron and Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner Joseph Williams thanked officials from the Melville Fire District and students from Western Suffolk BOCES for their efforts in the donation of a vehicle for use by the Suffolk County Auxiliary Police program.

The Melville Fire District donated a decommissioned 2003 Ford Crown Victoria for use by the Second Precinct Auxiliary Police Unit. Western Suffolk BOCES Wilson Technological Center students inspected the vehicle and performed minor repairs in preparation for the vehicle’s second life with the police auxiliaries. Outfitted and striped for official use, it is now ready for active service with unit volunteers. The Auxiliary Police program is under the auspices of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services and managed by the Suffolk County Police Department. Auxiliary officers are trained volunteers who assist the police department with traffic and crowd control at parades, large gatherings as well as neighborhood patrols. This is the first time a fire district has donated a vehicle to the police auxiliary program.

Chief Petty Officer Ryan Brandon Honored The Northport Volunteer Fire Department would like to congratulate Ryan Brandon, the most recent ex-Captain of the Junior Firefighters program “The Smokeaters.”

Ryan was recently awarded a promotion to Chief Petty Office in the United States Navy Sea Cadets program. During a meeting at the firehouse, Ryan was presented with a plaque congratulating him on his outstanding achievement and thanking him for his service to our country and his participation in our junior firefighters program.

Ryan was also presented with a college scholarship from exCaptain William Forster and the Forster family in memory of Willie Forester, a 50-plus-year member and Navy veteran who passed away last year.

As Ryan has just turned 18years old, he will be joining the Eatons Neck Fire Department and will be following in his father’s footsteps, ex-Chief Kevin J. Brandon, who passed away from cancer several years ago. In his father’s memory Ryan is very active in the Northport Fire Department Smokeaters Relay for Life team helping to raise funds for cancer research. Ryan is also very active in helping the Northport American Legion.

Ryan plans on attending college after

graduation and upon completion of his bachelor’s degree is considering a career as an officer in the United States Navy.

RESILIENCE FOR DUTY: MIND AND BODY

With the physical and emotional demands on responders today, there is a need to redefine what it means for firefighters to be fit for duty. Individual resilience for duty refers to the one’s ability to prepare for and recover to return to normalcy. Fit for duty no longer refers to only to physical fitness and agility. It also refers to being resilient to the stress and emotional impacts of the job.

Resilience begins with understanding the stress you face when responding to the chaos of crisis. Responding to the needs of a community during its most vulnerable times can take its toll on how emergency responders process the world around them. Unmanaged, constant exposure to such adversity can influence relationships, cause health issues and even affect safety at work. Being a “Resilient Responder” starts with committing to take care of yourself, sleeping well, eating well and living well.

According to the Department of Health & Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, “Individual resilience involves behaviors, thoughts, and actions that promote personal wellbeing and mental health. It refers to a person’s ability to withstand, adapt to, and recover from adversity”.

Begin with a Good Night’s Sleep Resilience begins with reporting for duty mentally and physically ready to respond. Be sure that you are well rested and ready to perform at your best. Sleep is a critical component to one’s physical health and mental well-being and is essential to resilience. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, sleep helps your brain function and process the stress of the world around us. Sleep also prepares your brain for your duty day. It aids in managing your attention span and decision-making and creative skills.

Sleep deficiency may impact resilience and can impact emotions, behavior and one’s ability to cope with changes. This can lead to elevated levels of stress and has been linked to depression, risky behaviors and even suicide. Avoid surprises by being current on issues and events that may impact emergency operations.

NHLBI also points to the value of sleep in managing physical well-being and repairing the impact of stresses on our bodies. When you sleep, the body heals and regenerates. For example, when you sleep, your body works to repair the impact of a variety of stresses on your heart and blood vessels. Individuals who have continued lack of sleep may suffer from other complications from sleep deficiency such as an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even stroke.

Eat well and Take Your Time We all have heard that you ‘are what you eat.’ Eating well includes learning about food and nutrition so that you have a healthy well balanced diet. Also, be sure to avoid excessive amounts of caffeine and alcohol. According to the American Heart Association, excessive amounts of alcohol or caffeine can increase blood pressure. Avoid caffeine during rehab. Instead, drink water to stay hydrated. Caffeine can interfere with sleep cycles and can exaggerate the impacts of stress on the body and mind.

According to an article in the Harvard Mental Health Letter, while stress initially may reduce appetite, stress eating is real. Stress eating can lead to the overeating of comfort foods that can be high in fats and sugars. This in turn can lead to weight gain and obesity.

Prolonged exposure to high stress triggers the body’s survival mechanisms, including an increase in appetite. If your body perceives that the stress is ever-present, it may cause a continuation of appetite.

The article also advises that stress can also change the type of food we desire. Several studies have shown that, “Physical or emotional distress increases the intake of food high in fat, sugar, or both.”

Foods that are heavy in fat and sugar may interfere with the area of the brain that identifies stress. These comfort foods may reduce stress but create cravings for what may be unhealthy choices.

To counteract the cravings for unhealthy food choices, focus food

choices on fruits and vegetables. Limit the intake of foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar. Drink water and exercise to lower levels of the stress hormone.

Engage Your Peers, Partners and Friends Several articles and studies show that having healthy relationships is a critical component of a personal resiliency strategy. Being mentally prepared for duty includes the ability to process and discuss our experiences with those we trust and with those we have built relationships. Relationships help the responders maintain a positive outlook and a calm demeanor.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has released an online brochure that can assist individuals in building their resiliency. Two factors that they associate with resiliency are communication skills and the capacity to manage strong feelings and impulses. While an individual can build these capabilities alone, having relationships allows peers, partners and friends to be part of a support network.

The APA provides 10 ways to build resilience. The first is to build strong connections with family, peers and friends. Having the support and assistance of those around you who care is essential to resilience and recovery from stress. Also, being there for others in need can have a benefit to building personal resilience.

Peers, partners and friends also help to recognize changes in personality and behavior that you may not recognize and help you recognize and cope.

No one is immune to the physical and emotional impacts of stress. Just as physical conditioning takes time, building a resilient lifestyle takes time. However, it is an essential component of assuring fitness for duty.

• Changes in eating habits, such as overeating or a loss of appetite • Overly worried, even about smaller things • Inability to concentrate, memory recall issues, or the inability to think clearly • Sadness, hopelessness, or feelings of worthlessness • Light, sound, sight, or touch sensitivities • Being restless, agitated, and irritable • Loss of interest in activities • Withdrawing from others • Lack of energy, enthusiasm, and motivation • Trouble concentrating • Reckless drinking of alcohol • Trouble making decisions • Weight gain or loss out of the norm • Trouble sleeping or sleeping more than usual • Anger and rage over trivial things • Taking unnecessary risks • Openly talking about suicide

Cooking for Life As I was going through my mail, I came upon a letter from a teacher in Rocky Point, NY. It stated how her class was a big fan of the show, Firehouse Kitchen. Upon reading this I thought, “What would be better than for Firefighter Ray to give her class a visit.” I contacted the teacher and told her my idea. She was excited and we set the date!

So began my trip to the northeast shore of Long Island. As one drives out this way, you cannot miss the feeling that you are in another place.

The landscape goes from the suburbs to a more rural landscaping and it is breath taking. For a moment, I forgot I was only 30 minutes from home! The class, I was visiting, was a life skills class. The main objective in the class is to get them ready for the real world. What is more necessary in the real world than to know how to cook?

Therefore, I showed them how to cook a meal.

When I got there, they made me feel like a movie star. They were beside themselves with the presence of Firefighter Ray —woo hoo! We went through a little Q-and-A and then got right to work. I thought chicken skewers would be perfect.

I did most of the cutting and they did most of the skewering. When they skewers were cooking in the oven, they thought it would be fun to watch an episode of Firehouse Kitchen. They chose to watch the one when I cooked with my wife, Lori. They thought it was funny how she was “busting my chops.” Lovely! When the episode was over and the berating stopped, we had a delicious meal with accompanied with many smiles. This life skills class is an important class and brings so much joy to the students involved. A very special thanks to Kyle, Kathleen, Valerie, Joey and Nikki. They are going to do great in life.

Skewer sticks Teriyaki sauce Greek yogurt

Directions Cube up the chicken and soak in teriyaki sauce.

Cube up onions and green peppers, onions and tomatoes. Skewer a piece of chicken, a green pepper, an onion and a tomato and continue in that order until skewers are full. Put in oven at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Let slightly cool before eating. Dip in yogurt sauce and enjoy!

106th ANG Airmen Killed in Helicopter Crash Four of the seven airmen killed in the March 15, 2018, helicopter crash on the IraqSyrian border were New York-area airmen from the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard Capt. Andreas O’Keeffe, 37, of Center Moriches, was an HH-60G Pave Hawk pilot.

Capt. Christopher Zanetis, 37, of Long Island City, was an HH-60G Pave Hawk pilot. He was also a Fire Marshall with the Capt. Christopher Zanetis FDNY and had recently joined the law firm of Debevoise and Plimpton in New York City.

Staff Sgt. Dashan Briggs, 30, of Port Jefferson Station, was assigned to the 106th Rescue Wing. He was an HH-60G special missions aviation flight engineer. He joined the 106th Rescue Wing in 2010 and was a full-time military member with the wing.

Master Sgt. Christopher Raguso, 39, of Commack was assigned to the 106th Rescue Wing. Raguso was an HH-60G special missions aviation flight engineer and a member of the Commack Fire Department (see pages 6-7).

Also killed in the crash were Capt. Mark Weber, 29, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Master Sgt. William Posch, 36, of Indiatlantic, Florida; and Staff Sgt. Carl Enis, 31, of Tallahassee, Florida.

Obituary

Northport’s John Michels The Northport Fire Department announced the passing of 40-year member, Secretary and ex-Captain of the Rescue Squad John Michels.

John joined the ranks of the Northport Fire Department in August 1978 and was assigned to the Hook and Ladder Company. In 1980 he became an EMT and served the community providing medical care from 1980 to 2008. He served as Treasurer of the Rescue Squad, then was elected First Lieutenant, ultimately advancing to the rank of Captain from 1984 to 1986. John served the Rescue Squad as Treasurer from 2012 to 2014.

In addition to all the duties he performed for the Rescue Squad, John was also department secretary for 32 years from 1982 to 2014.

In 1981 John was honored as the Rescue Squad Member of the Year for outstanding service to the squad. In 1998 he was Hook and Ladder Company Firefighter of the Year, and in 2003 John was the recipient of the Captain Pete

Picchioni Memorial Rescue Squad Member of the Year. He received the Scoop and Run Award for responding to more than 100 ambulance calls in the years 1987, 1988, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004 through 2008 and 2010. John was also recipient of the Northport Fire Department Chief's Award in 2004, 2005 and 2010.

John was a longtime teacher in the Huntington School District. He served his country for many years in the Navy and Naval Reserve. Loving husband of Faye M. (nee, Kaylor) Michels. Beloved father of Jeannette P. Michels and Timothy J. (Marlene) Michels. Cherished grandfather of Delaney, Palmer and Mckenna. Fond brother of Irene Dziedzic and the late James Michels. Donations to First Presbyterian Church of Northport, 330 Main Street, Northport, NY 11768 in John’s memory are appreciated.

John was an educator a mentor and a good friend.

He will be missed.

FDNY Lt. Michael R. Davidson Laid to Rest

On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and thousands of FDNY members, family and friends attended the funeral service for Lieutenant Michael R. Davidson of Engine Company 69 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Sadly, Lt. Davidson’s life was lost as he operated at a fire in Harlem. Lieutenant Davidson, of Floral Park, New York, is survived by his wife, Eileen, and their four children; Brooke, Joseph, Emily and Amy. Lieutenant Davidson is the son of retired Firefighter Robert Davidson, who served the Department for 26 years (primarily in the same firehouse as his son); and the brother of Firefighter Eric Davidson, an 11-year veteran, of Engine Company 88 in the Bronx. He is the 1,150th member of the FDNY to make the supreme sacrifice in the line-of-duty. Our prayers go out to Lt. Michael R. Davidson’s family, to the FDNY and to the City of New York, as we remember this hero. May he rest in peace as he watches over all firefighters from the floor above.

Melville’s Salvatore T. Silvestri, Sr. Salvatore Silvestri, the longest serving active firefighter in the Melville Volunteer Fire Department, passed away March 24, 2018, at the age of 84.

Sal was born August 25, 1933, and spent his early childhood in Brooklyn until his parents Matthew and Rose moved the family to Melville where they were chicken egg farmers at the corner of Altamore Street and Old East Neck Road.

He spent two years in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He married the love of his life Janet Schmitt in February 1957, and soon thereafter settled into the home they built on Bainbridge Avenue where they raised their family.

Sal joined the Melville Fire Department in January 1951. He was the backbone of the organization who spent the better part of his lifetime — 67 years — actively serving the community and working diligently to promote the health and progress of the department. In August 1960, when the Board resolved to establish a third company, named Engine Company No. 3 by its members, Sal was nominated, elected and appointed the Company’s first Lieutenant to lead the “Rebels.” He was a Captain from 1962 through 1965, elected Fire Commissioner from 1999 to 2008 serving as Chairman of the Board in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2008, and repeatedly assumed leadership roles on important committees. He was the impetus behind the creation of the members’

gym in the basement at fire headquarters. In addition to numerous company and department Member of the Year Awards, in 2006 Sal was awarded the Estee Lauder Humanitarian Award for exceptional commitment to the Melville Fire Department having raised nearly $100,000 to procure 50 automatic defibrillators for each of the department’s EMTs. Well into his 70s, Sal was responding to hundreds of alarms each year.

Sal was also active with and took leadership roles in St. Elizabeth’s RC Church and St. Paul’s Cursillo and Marriage Encounter programs, in professional organizations as President of the Suffolk County and NYS Life Underwriters’ Associations as well as various community groups as Scout Master in Boy Scouts of America and Manager of the Half Hollow Hills Little League. He particularly enjoyed playing, managing and participating in the success of the MFD Softball Team and was honored to be inducted into the Township of Huntington Softball Hall of Fame in 1996.

Sal’s priority was his family and he was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren's values, commitments, contribution and accomplishments. Sal is survived by Janet (nee Schmitt) his wife of 61 years, his children Susan (Steven) Kuehne, Salvatore Jr. (Denise) and Steven (Pamela), his grandchildren Stephanie (JohnPaul) Gunderson, Samantha, Steven Michael, Steven Richard, Salvatore III, Jacqueline, Kristin, his great granddaughter

Raeghan as well as his siblings Alfred, Theresa Daiuto, Gloria Perry and the late Anthony and Camille. Sons Sal Jr. and Steven followed their dad's footsteps into the Melville Fire Department.

Eastport’s Walter Pomasanoff Walter ‘Harry’ Pomasanoff was a 65year member of the Eastport Fire Department. He joined the department in November 1953. He was a member of the Seatuck Engine Company and also served the Eastport Fire District as a Commissioner for 34 years from 1983 to 2017.

Harry served with the Southampton Town Police department for 21 years.

He was hired in 1958 serving as a Patrolman until he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1970, in 1978 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He retired from the police force in 1979.

During the annual department BBQ, Harry could be seen every year working proficiently on the F-900 military fork lift. After a long week on the fork lift he would transition to serving over a thousand freshly cooked lobsters to the guests. Any lobster that touched a serving tray was picked out by Harry. Even though all the lobsters look identical he would make every guest feel special by picking just the right lobster. He would always be seen slowing the line because he knew almost every guest he served and would spark up a conversation. Throughout the day you would hear him say one of his many one liners, which made everyone around him smile and laugh. Harry had a one-of-a-kind smile and personality.

Harry was a beloved husband to his wife Judy of 58 years, a

devoted father to his three daughters, Susan, Sharon and Leanne, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. Harry was a true family man and would always take any opportunity to speak of how proud he was of all his family members accomplishments.

Thank you for sharing Harry with the fire department family.

Obituary

Freeport’s, FDNY’s Keith R. Young

Retired firefighter Keith R. Young of Tower Ladder 158 of the FDNY was laid to rest Saturday, March 24, 2018. He died due to injuries sustained while operating at the World Trade Center, September 11, 2001.

The services were held at St. Frances de Chantal RC Church in Wantagh in which some 1500 friends and relatives along with some 1000 firefighters attended. Two Arches of Honor were in place as the procession left the church.

Keith was raised in Freeport where he was a member of the Freeport Fire Department until moving to Wantagh. His wife passed in 2012 and it was her wish at her funeral that the women be dressed in white and not the traditional black. She didn’t want tears at her funeral. Keith’s family carried on this tradition at his funeral. He is survived by his three children.

Holtsville’s Ken Ford

On March 12, 2018, the Holtsville Fire Department mourned the loss of ex-Chief and Life Member Ken Ford.

Ex-Chief Ford was always willing to help anyone who was in need, whether it was a friend, co-worker, family member or a fellow firefighter. He always had a smile on his face and always had great advice to give.

Ex-Chief Ford will be greatly missed by everyone, not just family and friends, but also members of the community that he helped to protect over his many years of service in the Holtsville Fire Department.
