Winter: Time to A Good Time to Refamiliarize Change

At the start of this year’s winter, we were lucky with the weather. Then at the blink of an eye, things change and we were hit with a blizzard that was almost a record breaker.

Hopefully you were prepared to deal with frosted windows, slippery roads and the need to be cautious while responding to calls. For the new members, remember that frostbite is a serious issue, especially after the fire is knocked down and you are soaking wet. Most EMTs are aware that the cold can complicate patient care at an accident scene. Stop and give thought to working in the cold.

I would like to take a moment to thank our readers who have reached out to Fire News through Facebook. In case you have not done so, visit Fire News and FDNY Fire News on Facebook and like the page. Become one of the millions, yes millions of people who have liked a post, offered comment and shared posts. I recently came across a post on Facebook that actually made me stop and rethink about my commitment to the fire service. The post was a photograph of FDNY

Rescue 2’s firehouse door. On the photo the following was superimposed: Check the rig.

Check the tools. Mentor the probie. Learn from the senior man. Leave the department better than you found it. Wow! Those few sentences are so true and should make you stop and think.

As a senior member of my department, I find myself coming to the firehouse for coffee and while the coffee is brewing, I frequently review the pump panel of my truck. It has been awhile since I pumped a ripping fire. I want to make sure that I am not embarrassed when I am the guy responsible to get water to the nozzle crew in a speedy fashion. Recently, when I entered the firehouse for morning coffee, all of the doors on my station’s fire police truck were open. I stopped and paused and noticed one of my breakfast partners going through the truck making sure everything was where it was supposed to be. Did he have to do this? No, he most certainly did not, since the truck had been inspected a few days ago. I asked him what was up. He said, “Nothing, I just wanted to

check a few things that were used the other night.”

I have always learned from the best. The people who care are the people who reach out above and beyond what they are expected to do. Are you in this group?

To all members — not just probationary members — remember that being part of the fire-rescue and emergency services is a privilege and a lifestyle. Winter is a great time to go down to the firehouse to study your rig, refamiliarize yourself with the equipment placement on the truck and, while you are at it, ask yourself, “Are you leaving a positive mark on the department?”

Announcements FIREFIGHTERS’ DISEASE EXPERT, DR. J. MOLINE APPOINTED FASNY HEALTH CHAIR

Dr. Jacqueline Moline has been appointed to the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s new Health and Wellness Committee, where her vast experience in research, diagnosis and treatment of first responders, including 9/11 responders, will be mined for better health outcomes for New York State’s 92,000 volunteer firefighters and other volunteer emergency services personnel.

Dr. Moline chairs the Department of Occupational Medicine, Epidemiology and Prevention at the Northwell Health System and directs the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Center of Long Island.

FOURTH BATTALION TO HOLD BURN CENTER FUNDRAISER

The Fourth Battalion Fire District has announced their Eleventh Annual Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center Foundation Fundraiser will be hosted by the Lynbrook Fire Department at the Commuters Club on Ocean Avenue at the Long Island Rail Road Station in East Rockaway on Sunday, March 6, 2016 from 1300 to 1800.

There will be a free food buffet, live music, and many prizes and gifts will be raffled off. There will also be an outdoor cigar lounge and a special appearance by Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums. A donation to enter is only $10.

The Fourth Battalion has raised nearly $100,000 in the past 10 years for the Burn Center Foundation.

“All Nassau County firefighters should consider coming to the Commuters Club in East Rockaway on March 6 to help support the Burn Center, which is located at Nassau County University Medical Center, and which is so vital to all us firefighters and the public here in Nassau County,” said Lynbrook Chief James McDermott.

“Everyone is welcome to come and support the foundation and the live-saving work done at the Burn Center by a dedicated group of doctors, nurses, and medical professionals,” said ex-Chief John Hennig of the Rockville Centre Fire Department and Chairman of the Fourth Battalion. “We hope that firefighters throughout the county will stop-by on March 6 and join your fellow firefighters in supporting this very worthwhile fundraiser.”

Hempstead Basement Blaze Makes it 2 in 24

Brentwood Blaze

On January 4, 2016, the Brentwood Fire Department took numerous calls reporting a house fire on Virgil Drive. First Assistant Chief Derbyshire arrived to fire showing from the first floor on the exposure one side of a two-story, reportedly vacant, home. All searches of the house were negative. During fire, several firefighters suffered

minor injuries and were transported and released from Southside Hospital. Islip and the Islip Exchange Ambulance Corps responded to scene. Chief of Department Peterson had command of the scene with Assistant Chiefs Derbyshire, Boyle and Kelly handling the fire attack.

That Time of Year in Jamesport

On January 14, 2016, the Jamesport Fire Department responded to squad onto the roof and extinguished embers that had been blown the second chimney fire in a little over a week, this one on Apollo out onto the roof, gutters, and surrounding yard.

20 Displaced by W. Hempstead Fire

The West Hempstead Fire Department responded to a raging fire in a two-story mixed occupancy on Hempstead Turnpike on the morning of January 8, 2016.

Firefighters were faced by heavy fire condition in a furniture store with multiple occupants in the apartments above trapped. Nassau County Police removed at least two residents from upper floor via ladders before the arrival of fire units.

Firefighters then rescued others from the second floor. Thirteen departments were involved in the blaze; either responding to the scene or standing by. No serious injuries were reported, but more than 20 people were displaced.

Shed Fire in Farmingville In the early morning hours of November 30, 2015, the Farmingville Fire Department was activated for an unknown type fire to the rear of a residence on Ridgewood Avenue. Chief Dave Smith (5-18-31) advised dispatch of a working shed fire. The firstdue crew of Engine 2 strected an attack line, quickly knocking down all fire. Command requested a fire marshal and arson squad to the scene due to the suspicious nature.

Lynbrook Kitchen Fire Making donuts nearly destroyed a Lynbrook home on December 11, 2015, when cooking oil ignited and destroyed the kitchen in the home. Lynbrook firefighters were able to put out the fire before it spread to the rest of the singlestory Ocean Avenue residence. Third Assistant Chief Bill Abrams was first on the scene and found the fire already blowing out the side window. With the possibility of the fire spreading further, Lynbrook Chief James McDermott requested the assistance of East Rockaway, Rockville Centre and Lakeview. Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour.

Fatal Fire in Holtsville

On December 13, 2015, the Holtsville Fire Department responded to a house fire on Mary Lu Drive. A 65-year-old woman died in the fire, which was well involved on arrival. Firefighters from Holtsville and Farmingville aggressively attacked the fire and brought it under control. The fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad and the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshal’s Office.

Vacant House, Exposure Problems in Uniondale

On December 12, 2015, the Uniondale Fire Department was alerted for a house fire at the intersection of Uniondale and Newton Avenues. First arriving units encountered a fully involved two-story vacant house with exposures problems on the 2 and 4 sides, which were occupied. The fire caused the original house to collapse and caused minor damage to the neighboring homes. Mutual aid was

provided by the Roosevelt, North Bellmore, Merrick, North Merrick, Hempstead, South Hempstead and East Meadow. The main body of fire was knocked own in about an hour with units being on scene for several hours hitting hot spots. First Assistant Chief Tucker was in charge of the operation.

Out of Control in Hempstead

Occupants of a Hempstead home were able to escape before a raging fire burned out of control in the rear of their Wellesley Street home on December 15, 2015.

Medford Condo Fire

On December 16, 2015, the Medford Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire at the Blue Ridge Condos on Blue Ridge Drive. Upon arrival Chief Maneri (5-14-31) was met with smoke showing. First-due Engine 7 stretched in, and mutual aid was requested from North Patchogue, Farmingville and Coram. The

fire was quickly knocked down without further incident and other condos were checked for extension. Command requested a fire marshal to the scene to investigate. Westbury House Fire

On December 12, 2015, the Westbury Fire Department took numerous calls reporting a house fire on Grand Street. First Assistant Chief Bartunek arrived and engine crews stretched three lines into the house while the ladder crew started opening up the boarded up windows, laddered the house and began searches. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes with no reported injuries. Mutual aid came from Hicksville, Syosset, Carle Place, Jericho and East Meadow.

Fire at Deer Park Gas Pump

Recently, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a car fire at the Sunoco Gas Station on Deer Park Avenue. A car was engulfed in flames at the gas pumps with the driver out when firefighters arrived.

Car Fire on the SSP

The Wantagh Fire Department alerted Stations 2 and 4 for a car fire on the westbound Southern State Parkway at Exit 28/Wantagh Avenue on December 16, 2015. Safety Officer 6920 was on scene first and found an involved car on the shoulder. Engines 692 and 697 responded and extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes.

A Little too Close to Home On December 15, 2015, the Farmingville Fire Department was activated for a reported vehicle fire at the BP Gas Station located next door to their substation on Portion Road. The crew of first-due Engine 3 made a quick knock down of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Quick Work in Levittown On December 15, 2015, the Levittown Fire Department received multiple calls for a house fire on Corncrib Lane by Bucket Lane in Levittown.

Arriving units found an exterior fire on the rear porch and knocked it down as additional units were arriving. Quick work stopped the fire from spreading into the home. One person suffered minor burns but refused medical attention at the scene.

Baldwin House Fire

The Baldwin Fire Department took numerous calls reporting a house fire on Steele Boulevard in the early morning of December 27, 2015. Chief of Department Bendel arrived to heavy fire showing from the rear of the house on both floors. Engine 202 stretched multiple lines with the crews from the additional responding engines. Ladders 206 and 207 searched, laddered and vented the house. Numerous people escaped prior to the department’s arrival. The fire extended into the attic and went through roof before being brought under control. Mutual aid came from Freeport, Oceanside and South Hempstead.

Babylon Blaze

In the early morning of December 19, 2015, the Babylon Fire Babylon. Engines 1-2-3 and 1-2-5 arrived and stretched two lines.

Massapequa Electric Box Fire Recently, while returning from an automatic alarm on Merritt Avenue, the Massapequa Fire Department was alerted to a house fire on St. Marks Place, a block away from their initial response. First Assistant Chief Beneville arrived to find fire coming from an electric meter on the side of the house and burning up the wall. Once the power to the house was secured, the fire was quickly extinguished and contained to a small area.

Central Islip Kitchen Fire

On December 19, 2015, FRES notified the Central Islip Fire Department of a structure fire on Ralph Avenue with occupants inside. Less than 10 minutes later, fire was reported showing on the 2/3 corner. Under the command of Robert McGee (3-7-30), two lines were stretched and put into operation for a kitchen fire, which had some extension. The fire was quickly knocked down with overhaul

Deadly 1916 Fire Truck Crash

By Paul Hashagen On February 5, 1916, the Babylon Fire Department’s new combination chemical engine and hose cart was involved in a deadly accident on its first run. Just three weeks earlier the department had taken possession of the new motorized hose wagon for the Sumpwams Hose Company. Members of the company had made themselves familiar with the new rig and were awaiting its first alarm.

It was around 0700 when an alarm sounded for a chimney fire on Park Avenue, a location just north of the railroad tracks near Deer Park Avenue. The first members to arrive at the Sumpwams’ firehouse on Fire Island Avenue were John R. Higbie, president of a local bank and captain of the hose company, and Leonard ‘Leon’ Pettit who was chief of the department. Knowing the early morning hour and snow covered streets would have a light initial turnout, the men fired up the new rig and rolled to the alarm with Higbie at the wheel.

As the gleaming new apparatus sped past his home, Pettit saw his wife and children waving from their windows; he smiled back proudly. A few seconds later the responding apparatus arrived at the Long Island Railroad grade crossing at Deer Park Avenue and slowed to a stop. The crossing gates were down as a local passenger train # 97 was moving past the crossing to enter the roundhouse yards. The gateman

Higbie pressed forward just as the gates began to lift and started across the tracks. In his excitement, the gateman apparently did not see an express train #47 approaching on the main track. The high-speed train hit the fire truck amidships at the driver’s seat, and demolished the rig throwing both firefighters from the truck. Captain Higbie was thrown 55-feet to the right of the engine, killing him instantly. Chief Pettit was caught on the front of the train's cowcatcher and carried over 600-feet until the train came to a stop; he would die on the way to the hospital.

The fire truck’s wreckage, hose, wood and iron was strewn for 150feet along the track. The bodies of the two men, life long friends, were taken to a local undertaker as an inquest began. Large turnouts of firefighters from neighboring fire departments, bankers and businessmen of all types attended the funerals. Both funeral corteges avoided crossing the Deer Park Avenue railroad crossing on their way to the cemeteries. Recently passed laws left the families with $1,500 each. The law specifically stated, “upon the death…while in the performance of his duties….”

It was a tragedy the community and the department would long remember.

Paul Hashagen has been fighting fires since 1976. In 2003, he retired from the FDNY after 25 years of service, with 20 of those in Rescue Company 1. He is a former chief of the Freeport Fire Department and is still an active member of Truck Company 1. Truck Fire in Farmingville On December 30, 2015, the Farmingville Fire Department was activated for a reported vehicle fire on Baylor Drive. The crew of first-due Engine 2 arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a landscaping truck. The fire was quickly knocked down without further incident.

Hagerman RV Fire

On December 29, 2015, the Hagerman Fire Department was acti- requested mutual aid from North Patchogue, Patchogue, Bellport, vated for a reported structure fire at the rear of an auto parts store Medford and South Country Ambulance. Candle Causes Condo Conflag Wantagh firefighters responded to a fire in the Cedar Cove Condos on Cedar Street in Seaford Harbor early on January 13, 2016. Arriving firefighters found smoke coming from one of the condo units. Chief Jim Bloomfield requested a fire marshal as four tenants sustained smoke inhalation. They refused medical aid and the Red Cross was notified for tenants that were displaced. An unattended candle in a bedroom was thought to be the cause.

Floral Park Comm’l. Fire The Floral Park Centre Fire Department transmitted a working fire after a blaze broke out in a commercial building at the corner on Jericho Turnpike and Cherry Lane early on December 27, 2015.

Arriving units encountered a heavy smoke condition on the ground level and a search commenced to locate the seat of the fire. Mutual aid companies from surrounding districts assisted at the scene.

Body Shop Destroyed On December 14, 2015, a fire destroyed an auto body shop on Henry Street in Hempstead. Hempstead firefighters responded and found the building engulfed in flames. Smithtown Basement Fire The Smithtown Fire Department responded to a basement fire on Timber Ridge Drive on January 15, 2016. Upon arrival of Chief Tim Murphy (4230) a fire was found burning in a bathroom of the two-story home. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, holding it to the room and contents.

HVAC Fire in North Massapequa

The North Massapequa Fire Department was alerted for a building fire at the Town of Oyster Bay Community Center on North Albany Avenue on January 18, 2016. First responding units were advised that fire was showing from the roof. First Assistant Chief Ferrara arrived and requested mutual aid. Chief of Department Mauro arrived during the operation and took command. Engine 663 was first due and was followed by Ladder 661. The crew from 663 had two lines stretched, one into the building and one to the roof to attack the fire, which appeared to be coming from an HVAC unit. The fire was quickly contained to the roof. Mutual aid was provide by Bethpage, Seaford and Wantagh.

On December 7, 2015, the North Amityville and East Farmingdale involved sedan in the southbound lanes. There has been considerable activity recently with new apparatus deliveries and orders.

Island Park has received a Ferrara 107' rear mount aerial quint painted in a striking Black over Red color scheme while Garden City Park accepted two Cinder model pumpers. Pierce has delivered an Enforcer model 1500/750 pumper to Greenport, a Velocity 105' rear mount aerial to Rockville Centre and two Arrow XT 1500/500 pumpers to Oceanside (including one with a low profile cab for Hose 1). Roslyn Rescue is awaiting delivery of two Pierce Velocity engines painted Black over Red while East Norwich will receive a B.R.A.T. model brush/high water evacuation vehicle on a five ton GI chassis to replace their 1978 GMC/Grumman/Oren 500/500 midi-pumper.

Empire Hose 3 of the Merrick FD has ordered an E-One Cyclone 1500/500 to replace their 1988 Mack CF/RD Murray engine (which the company will be retaining) while North Bellmore has placed an order for a Rosenbauer Commander series 2000/500 pumper. Recent Spartan ERV deliveries include two pumpers for Hauppauge Engine Co# 4 and a Ford F-550 walk-around light rescue for Centereach. Currently on order/in production with Spartan ERV is a 93' mid-mount ladder tower

“All the Colors of the Rainbow”

The return of unique colors on Long Island apparatus continues with Garden City Park receiving what is believed to be the first ever Black over Yellow color scheme. (coincidentally, Quogue will get the second with their new Chivvis stumpjumper). Valley Stream has received a Gray over Red Seagrave engine while Roslyn Highlands new Spartan ERV engine, rescue engine and mini pumper will feature Silver over Red to match their two existing Seagrave Concorde series rear mount aerial quints. Franklin Square acquired a high water evac rig from an FD in Carbon County, PA painted Black and Silver making it the third frontline LI apparatus painted Black.

Winter is Here

By Danny Peluso There are so many things that change when running our fleets over the winter months. Coolant leaks are the most common for those of us that run rigs from heated bay floors to freezing temperatures. One thing we often overlook is the water that builds in the air tanks. The air brake charging system relies on air pressure to work properly by supplying compressed air to the braking system, as well as other air accessories on the vehicle. These systems consist of an air compressor, governor, discharge line, dryer and service reservoir. Long idle time in cold weather will sometime cause our compressor to cycle when systems bleed down. Warm air pressure being forced into cold steel tanks will condense and moisture will start to build. Over a period of time, the vehi-

cles dryer can no longer handle removing the water and the system becomes saturated.

Accessories like air ride systems are affected with lines freezing when water is not removed. Apparatus like ambulances that drop rear suspensions when loading patients will not air back up.

So how can we help avoid some of these nuisances. All manufactures install pull cords to bleed water from your vehicles. Most of us walk past them every day but have no idea what they do. Some manufacturers install auto drains that will bleed the air automatically. But if not, the water has to be removed manually.

Let's start by identifying where your bleeders are. Then run the rig at high idle and have your air pressure build to 120 psi. Starting on the driver's side, pull on the cables from front to back. Allow air pressure to rebuild and repeat these steps on the passenger side until no water is visible coming from the tanks.

We all take the time to safeguard our fire pumps and plumbing in the colder weather. This is one more step in keeping your rigs reliable, safe and in service.

Huntington Manor Hits Chimney Fire

The Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a house fire on Schubert Court in South Huntington on January 9, 2016. First arriving units found the fireplace chimney involved with extension to the attic. Crews began an aggressive interior attack and brought the fire under control within 15 minutes, limiting damage to the home. Fifty firefighters were on scene with six pieces of apparatus, under the command of First Assistant Chief Mike DePasquale, with operations handled by Assistant Chiefs Jon Hoffmann and Chuck Brady. Mutual aid came from Melville and Huntington (cover).

Starting the Year Off in Massapequa On January 3, 2016, the Massapequa Fire Department was called to a house fire on Plymouth Road. Chief of Department Keuchler arrived at the first working fire transmitted in Nassau County for the year. The fire was located in the utility room of the house and spread to the kitchen. The crew from first-due Engine 635 had two lines stretched into the home and had the fire knocked down and quickly contained. The crew from Ladders 632 and 636 laddered, searched and vented the house. There were no injures and the cause was under investigation. South Farmingdale responded to the scene as the FAST unit.

Cover Story

Kings Park Fire Called Suspicious The Kings Park Fire Department responded to a building fire of the grounds of the former Kings Park Psychiatric Facility on January 1, 2016. Upon arrival, firefighters found Building 18, previously used as an employee’s residence, fully involved.

Mutual aid companies from Commack and Smithtown were called to assist at the scene. The Suffolk Police and Smithtown Fire Marshal were investigating the cause, which appeared to be suspicious.

Bay Shore House Fire On January 22, 2016, the Bay Shore Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Potter Boulevard. Engine 3-1-1 arrived and began an attack on the fire, which was moving swiftly through the home. Mutual aid was requested from West Islip, North Babylon, Brentwood, and Deer Park. Coverage for the district was provided by the Babylon, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Additionally, Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad werre notified as well.

Car Fire/MVA in Centereach On the evening of December 26, 2015, the Centereach Fire Department was activated for an MVA with reported fire on Holbrook Road. Suffolk County Police sector cars were the first units on scene advising of an active fire with all occupants self extricated. A nearby neighbor knocked down the fire with a garden hose and dry chem extinguisher prior to units’ arrival. Occupants from the vehicles were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for their injuries via a Centereach Ambulance.

Mineola Car Fire Nassau County Fire Marshals were called to the scene of a car fire in the parking lot of a bank on Hillside Avenue and Herricks Road in Mineola on January 2, 2015. A witness reported that they thought they saw a rag hanging from the car’s gas tank before it burst into flames.

Unsure of the circumstances, and with fuel leaking from the vehicle, officials notified the County Fire Marshals and Hazardous Materials Unit. Firefighters spread foam over the area to extinguish the blaze and prevent any flare up. Both Garden City Park and Mineola units were on the scene.

EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND

Smithtown Water Rescue

Suffolk Police and Smithtown Fire Department responded to Blydenburgh County Park on Veterans Highway on January 9, 2016. Upon arrival, a man and his two dogs were trapped in icy water near the boat ramp. Apparently the dogs ventured off onto the lake and its owner went in to remove them and fell through the ice. Wearing a coldwater rescue suit a police officer from Suffolk Police Emergency Services swam out to the trapped man and his dogs. Assisted by Smithtown firefighters and additional police personnel, the man and his dog were safely rescued and transported

by Smithtown Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital suffering hypothermia. Also responding to the scene were additional water rescue resources from Kings Park, Nesconset and Saint James. The dogs were secured by Suffolk Police who turned them over to a relative.

N. Merrick MVA One person, in a small SUV, was injured after an MVA on Merrick Avenue near Lee Avenue in North Merrick on January 4, 2016. 3 Hurt in Nesconset MVA The Nesconset Fire Department responded to an MVA/heavy rescue at the corner of Route 347 and Lake Avenue. The crew extricated one driver, and three people were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. The accident was under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.

3 Hurt in Jericho MVA On December 9, 2015, the Jericho Fire Department responded to a car into a tree with entrapment on Saratoga Drive. The crew from Heavy Rescue 949 used hydraulic tools to remove the driver’s side door and extricate the injured driver. Two children were also injured and transported to the hospital.

Heavy Rescue 1-7-5, Engine 1-7-1 and Ambulances 1-7-7 and 1-7-8 responded along with Chief of Department Harley and First Assistant Collins. The crew from 1-7-5 put spreaders and cutters into operation to remove the drivers door and extricated the driver in about 15 minutes. Both of the injured were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.

Minor Damage, Major Delays On December 15, 2015, the Bethpage Fire Department, while responding to an automatic alarm, came across a LIRR train that had struck a tractor-trailer at the Broadway crossing.

Crews checked for aided and spills and there were neither. The driver of the truck left the stalled cab as the train approached and the train struck it causing minor damage and major delays.

New Hyde Park MVA A three-vehicle chain reaction crash on Lakeville Road in North New Hyde Park left several people injured on November 14, 2015. Two vehicles rearended other vehicles with a third car driven off the road and through a nearby fence. New Hyde Park firefighters and Nassau County Police responded.

Huntington Manor MVA On November 7, 2015, the Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to a two-car MVA on Jericho Turnpike West between Paumonok Drive and Avery Road. Huntington Handles Route 25A MVA The Huntington Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle MVA on Route 25A near Park Avenue on December 6, 2015. Huntington firefighters secured the two SUVs and applied absorbent to the roadway for a fuel spill.

Firefighters were on the scene with a heavy rescue truck, under the command of Chief Robert Berry. The injured were transported to Huntington Hospital by the Huntington Community Ambulance.

Lucky Hit in Malverne The driver of an SUV was slightly injured after she struck the rear end of a parked pickup truck on Rider Avenue in Malverne early on November 23, 2015. Malverne firefighters and police were at the scene to assist.

Pole Down, Power Out in Amityville MVA The Amityville Fire and Police Departments responded to a singlevehicle accident at Merrick Road and Richmond Avenue early on November 8, 2015. The driver of a sedan went off the road and struck a utility pole causing it to fall which set the transformers on fire and knocked out power to a large part of the neighborhood. The driver was uninjured and firefighters had to wait for PSE&G to arrive to shut the power so they could extinguish the fire. Second Assistant Chief Greey was in charge of the scene.

Uniondale MVA

At least two people were injured in a two-vehicle collision on Nassau Road near Avenue B in Uniondale on November 14, 2015. An SUV and a pickup truck collided leaving the pickup heavily damaged and on the sidewalk. Uniondale firefighters were on the scene.

3 Injured in Hempstead MVA Three people were injured, one critically, in a singlecar accident on Front Street in Hempstead on November 15, 2015. Hempstead firefighters and police were called to the scene and found a small sedan had careened into a utility pole trapping all three occupants. Two were able to be safely removed but the driver was pinned. Hydraulic tools were put into operation and the roof was removed so EMS personnel could attend to the critically injured driver. Close Call at Pump in Great Neck On December 17, 2015, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Company 3 and the Ambulance Unit responded to an MVA at the intersection of Northern Boulevard and South Middle Neck Road in Great Neck. Heavy Pin in Holtsville On December 16, 2015, the Holtsville Fire Department was activated for an MVA with a reported heavy rescue on Blue Point Road. First responder 5-11-81 was first on scene and confirmed the driver was heavily pinned in the vehicle. The crew of Rescue 4 worked fast to extricate the driver by removing two doors. The patient was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital via a Holtsville Ambulance.

Hicksville MVA On December 16, 2015, the Hicksville Fire Department responded to an MVA at the intersection of Plainview Road and South Gate. One driver was injured in the two-car accident that sent one vehicle into two parked cars. Haz-Mat Unit 9312, returning from a Syosset job, was first-due and assisted in aiding and securing the cars.

Chlorine Spill in Syosset On December 16, 2015, the Syosset Fire Department responded to a leaking liquid chlorine truck on Cold Spring Road. Arriving units found the truck had been leaking for several blocks and mutual aid was requested from the Hicksville Haz-Mat unit, Nassau County Fire Marshal Haz-Mat units and NCPD Emergency Service Units. Students at a nearby BOCES were held in place as crews stopped the leak and used multiple hose lines and deck guns to dilute the chlorine. All units were under the command of Chief of the Department Mark Mianulli.

Worker Pinned in Southampton On December 30, 2015, the Southampton Village Ambulance led by Chief Richard Fowler, was dispatched to a subject injured at a construction site on Moses Lane in Southampton Village. Upon arrival it was determined that the man was trapped under heavy forms used to pour foundations.

Southampton Village ambulance requested assistance from the Southampton Fire Department in removing the injured male.

Crews from the Heavy Rescue Squad assisted in packaging and carefully extricating him. A medevac was requested, but was unable to fly due to inclement weather. The ambulance then ground transported the victim to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. The fire department was under the command of 1st asst Chief Chris Brenner.

Into the Woods on the SSP Wet roads, speed, and a bend in the road may have played a part in a single-vehicle crash on the Southern State Parkway near Corona Avenue in North Valley Stream on January 10, 2016. The car left the parkway, rode up a steep embankment, then flipped over and landed in nearby trees. 4 Injured in Copiague MVA The Copiague Fire Department and North Amityville Fire Company responded to a two-car MVA at 35th Street and Dixon Avenue on December 30, 2015. The driver of asedan collided with an SUV causing the sedan to overturn. Units from both departments responded and secured the vehicles and handled a large fuel spill. There were four people injured and they were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Copiague and North Amityville Ambulances.

Lucky in Franklin Sq. An SUV crashed into a safety barrier at a Franklin Square gas station narrowly missing the gas pumps early on January 10, 2016. The Franklin Square and Elmont Fire Departments were on the scene. The occupants of the vehicle escaped with only minor injuries and were evaluated by Nassau County EMS personnel.

2-Car MVA in Massapequa Park After taking up from a FAST Truck assignment in Massapequa on January 3, 2016, South Farmingdale Chief of Department Pupora, First Assistant Chief Mackie and Ladder 978 came upon a two-car MVA at Sunrise Highway and Cartwright Boulevard. Two cars collided causing the one to roll 360 degrees.

The driver was still on the accelerator which caused the vehicle to crash through a fence and go up an embankment that leads to the LIRR elevated tracks. The car hit a tree and came to a stop but was at a dangerous angle. Massapequa units also responded. Heavy Rescue 633 (Squad 8) Engine 6315, Engine 6314 and Ambulance 6310 arrived on scene and the crew from 633 and South Farmingdale 978 used cribbing to stabilize the vehicle and removedthe driver through the passenger door with minor injuries. Both drivers were taken to a local hospital .

Cap One Donates to Fire Academy On December 3, 2015, Capital One Bank presented a check to the Vocational Education and Extension Board (VEEB) of Suffolk County to assist them in their training mission to the 12,000 volunteer firefighters in Suffolk County. Ms. Heidi Joseph, regional executive for Long Island, said, “We are amazed at the dedication of the volunteer firefighters in Suffolk County who spend so much of their free time protecting their neighbors and communities. Sleigh bells rang as Santa Claus rode the red wagon of Friendship Engine Co. 3 of the North Massapequa Fire Department on a mild December afternoon as he visited North Massapequa and attended the annual children’s Christmas party at Sal’s Place. Firefighters of Friendship Co. 3 were Santa's helpers. Three former chiefs of the department, who attended, were Marc Timpano, Nicholas Paolucci and Richard Erickson along with ex-Captain Nick Cerullo. Lt. Angella Ferrara was the officer in charge. You Just Won Your Company Officer’s Election or Your Chief’s Election Now What?

By Paul Mastronardi You have worked hard in attaining your newly elected position.

Your attendance at drills and runs has been above average. You have proven your ability on the fire ground. You have won the approval and respect of your fellow firefighters. Now comes the difficult part of the job. Before the election you were responsible for yourself and a partner, now you are responsible for a company or possibly a department.

I was faced with this situation as a newly elected Lieutenant in the Holbrook Fire Department. It was the summer of 1995 and we were activated for a mutual aid response to Westhampton Beach for the infamous wildfires of that year. I was responsible for an engine company of five firefighters and the fire was coming at us on Riverhead-Speonk Road like a freight train. My firefighters looked at me to make a split second decision. I instructed my two nozzle teams to turn their nozzles to fog and direct the streams over our heads. The fire jumped over the road and we were protected.

A few days later, Holbrook was activated for a Signal 23 chief's investigation for smoke in the area. We did not have any chiefs in town that day, so the dispatcher toned it out for any officer to call headquarters. I was the junior Lieutenant in the department, the dispatcher stated that I was the only officer in the district. By the time I reached the firehouse I could see a large column of smoke. Myself, and two firefighters responded with a mini-pumper to the location. Upon arrival, the flames were at the tops of the trees, and the head was threatening a housing development. Again, I was thrust into a position in which I had to make a series of decisions which impacted my crew, my department and my neighbors. A few months earlier, I worried about getting the nozzle on the first-due engine, now I was the incident commander in charge of 25 or more departments coming on mutual aid.

The challenges that a newly elected officer or chief face are real and dynamic in nature. Your initial decisions will have either a positive or negative impact on the fire or emergency. You must prepare for these challenges and rehearse different scenarios in your mind before they occur. Seek guidance from more experienced members of your department, ask questions, inquire how they handled different scenarios.

Your training does not stop at Firefighter I. You must continue with Firefighter II, Heavy Rescue, RIT, Fire Officer I, etc., and any other training that is available. The course offerings at the Suffolk and Nassau County Fire Academies are taught by some of the best instructors in the world. Your decisions must be based on knowledge and experience. Your crew’s family is depending upon you to give the correct command that will mitigate the situation, and bring their loved one home safely.

This is a serious business for serious firefighters.

Lt. Paul Mastronardi is an 18-year veteran of the FDNY. He is assigned to the Rescue Batttalion.

Previously, as a firefighter, he was assigned to Engine 280, Squad 252, and Rescue 4. Paul has been the president of the FDNY Honor Legion since 2007 and is currently assigned to Squad 1.

Accessing Federal Grants for LI

Standing with local firefighters at Seaford Fire Department on December 14, 2015, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer launched a push-ahead of the final Congressional budget deal to increase grant programs for firefighters on Long Island. In recent years, these programs, which help local fire departments purchase new equipment, protective gear and emergency vehicles, and recruit and hire new firefighters, have been cut. These federal funds are administered through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant programs. Schumer made a public push and announce he is asking the Senate Appropriations Committee to include a combined $810 million for both programs in the FY 2016 appropriations bill, an increase of $130 million from FY 2015 funding. This would afford Long Island departments a better chance to secure some of these federal grant monies.

Selden Hosts Full Throttle Run

This year the Selden Fire Department hosted the Full Throttle Toy Run to benefits Ski’s Kids and The Child Life Program at Stony Brook Childrens Hospital. With the great weather, over 400 motorcycles and members from Selden, Centereach, Nesconset, Setauket, Port Jefferson, Farmingville, Ronkonkoma, Saint James, and Smithtown, and Community Ambulance Company of Sayville. participated in raising over $12,000 and delivering truck loads of toys.

Centereach Dedicates Truck to Ex-Chief

On December 12, 2015, members of the Centereach Fire Department paid a visit to ex-Chief Gary Kreidler at the Stony Brook Veterans Home. When Ladder Truck 5-5-5 was put in service, Company 3 dedicated it in honor of ex-Chief Kreidler by putting his name on the front of the truck. The chiefs, officers, members and junior firefighters greeted Chief Kreidler, and his sister, Grace, by officially dedicating Ladder 5 to Gary and having a wetdown in his honor. Chief Kreidler was greeted by his friends and members of the department including several ex-chiefs who had the

honor of serving alongside him. Both Gary and Grace are life members of the Centereach Fire Department. Gary, serving 47 years and also past-Commissione, has served in all five Centereach companies. He was also a former Suffolk County Fire Coordinator and member of the Suffolk County USART. This was a great way to honor a great man who dedicated most of his life to helping and protecting his community.

Real-World Training in Northport Northportvoluntter firefighters continued advanced firefighter training using a building scheduled to be demolished to set up simulated firefighting and rescue situations. Hay bales were set up in contained 55-gallon drums to generate heat and smoke that would be experienced in a real fire. Doors were padlocked and screwed shut, windows were locked and access to the building was blocked. Newer firefighters were trained on connecting to hydrants, stretching handlines, using forcible entry tools, finding fire in a heavy smoke-filled environment and search and rescue techniques.

During the scenario a second surprise simulation was conducted when a firefighter went missing. The emergency alarm on his air pack started ringing and firefighters had to reenter the building while it was still burning to try to find where he was located. In the scenario, the firefighter was too badly injured and was unable to remove himself from the structure.

Firefighters practiced rapid intervention techniques in order to locate and save the life of the injured firefighter and safely remove him from the building.

Breaking Ground The day we had all been waiting for finally came! The groundbreaking, for the Islip Town Fire Museum took place on January 9, 2016.

Wait, let me back up a little. On December 27, 2015, I received a phone call from David June, one of the museum’s main organizers, informing me that the groundbreaking — 26 years in the making — was finally happening.

Dave asked if I could have some of the sponsors from my show, Firehouse Kitchen, donate some refreshments for the event. I answered, “I’m on it!”

This is the reply I always give Dave when he asks me to handle a task. The first sponsor that came to mind was Best Market. They have three locations in the area and are BIG supporters of the volunteer fire departments. Without hesitation, they accepted. Not only did they bring great food and drink, but the CFO, Jeff Yonkers, came with his three sons to help serve the food.

On to the ceremony. All the bigwigs came out from the Town of Islip, even Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Councilwoman Trish Bergen.

The ceremony was very moving. You could feel all the speeches were from the heart, especially the one from Nick Campson. Nick spoke about how the museum started and how he’s been waiting for this day. What made Nick’s speech so special was how he thanked all the supporters. It was a long list, but Nick made sure he acknowledged what each supporter did. It was comical and warm at the same time.

The Islip Town Fire Museum is going to be located right next to the Atlantic League of Professional Basbeall’s Duck’s Stadium, in Central Islip, New York. It will be a venue were Suffolk County fire departments can show off their antique fire equipment and share their histories. It will also be a learning center to teach young minds about fire prevention and fire safety — just like the safety tips on my show.

The Islip Town Fire Museum has been a great friend to Firehouse Kitchen. I will always support it and do what I can to make it great. Special thanks to Ray Reily, Bill Johnson, Ed Tulley, Rick Gimbal, David June, Warren Holtje, Nick Campson, Laura Johnson and the rest of the building committee.

Sunshine Toy Drive a Huge Success The ninth annual Sunshine Toy Drive was a huge success this year. A holiday toy drive for the needy was the idea of 17year-old Victoria Plumitallo of Dix Hills, who began the drive nine years ago with the assistance of her parents, Dix Hills Fire Commissioner Mike Plumitallo and his wife Hope.

Derived from her nickname ‘Sunshine,’ Victoria’s idea to help the less fortunate grew into the “Sunshine Toy Drive.”

Assisted by friends, family, firefighters and volunteers, well over 1,000 children received holiday gifts this season. Happy 85th Birthday to Commack Ex-Chief Fred Meuser The Commack Fire Department helped exChief Fred ‘Mousey’ Meuser celebrate a memorable 85th birthday. About 25 Commack firefighters visited him for his birthday at the Huntington Hills Center for Rehabilitation on December 15, 2015. This was an unexpected surprise for Meuser, as firefighters arrived and had an enjoyable dinner and cake with his family. Meuser served as Chief of the Commack Fire Department from 1981-1983, and has over 30 years of dedicated service.

Selden’s Zdenek Honored

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore (R-Ronkonkoma) recently recognized a Selden volunteer firefighter, Richie L. Zdenek of Selden for his heroic actions that saved a co-worker’s life. A proclamation was presented to the nne-year Selden Fire Department volunteer to commemorate the event.

On November 20, 2015, while at the Brooklyn VA Hospital where he is employed, Firefighter Zdenek saw a fellow employee collapse to the ground. Determining the man was in cardiac arrest, Zdenek immediately began to administer CPR until help arrived.

“It was Richie’s quick thinking and bravery that helped save the victim’s life”" stated Legislator Tom Muratore. “Firefighter Zdenek exemplified heroism in his conduct, and is a great asset to the Selden Fire Department. His recognition is well deserved, and I thank him for his volunteerism. I’d also like to wish the cardiac arrest victim a speedy and full recovery.”

Greenlawn FD Honors Chief Scott Waryold The Greenlawn Fire Department honored outgoing Chief Scott Waryold for his dedicated service as Chief from 2013-2014. Chief Waryold had been a member for the last 35 years, and has served as an officer for 25 of those years. Huntington Chiefs Banquet The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs’ Council recently held their annual banquet at the Huntington Crescent Club. This year’s Chief of the Year Award was presented to Chief Joseph Ervin and Second Assistant Chief Daniel Heffernan of the East Northport Fire Department, who were both recognized for their quick and heroic actions at the scene of a working house fire on May 8, 2014, in which they rescued a woman.

Centereach Explorer Project The Board of Fire Commissioners of the Centereach Fire District thanked Eagle Scout candidate Thomas Bassett of Troop 356 for the construction of a garden at the main fire house on South Washington Avenue. The garden, complete with benches, serves as Thomas’s Eagle project; one of the many requirements to attain the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. To raise money for the garden’s construction, Thomas held a spaghetti dinner at the firehouse and also sought donations from the local community. The project took more than 100 hours to complete.

“We are very proud of Thomas’s dedication and his generosity to the members of the department and the community,” said Board of Fire Commissioners chairwoman Julia Wilson. “We also thank Thomas’s family who are also members of the department. Axemen Donate to FDNY

On December 22, 2015, at the CSU Unit-Fort Totten, Queens, the Axemen MC NY3 Chapter, proudly presented three checks to FDNY members who have children with special needs, to help augment costs for equipment needed for a better quality of life for their children. Also, receiving a check was representatives from the Lil’ Bravest organization. In attendance were members of Axemen MC NY3, FDNY Counciling Unit-Kids Connect Program, FDNY recipients and their families, representatives of the Lil’ Bravest organization from FDNY E84/L34, and members from FDNY Rescue 4. As it is their sole mission, the Axemen MC NY3 Chapter will continue to be working hard in the hopes to raise more money to help these children of FDNY members.

East Meadow Donates Toys to NUMC As they have during each holiday season for the last four decades, East Meadow Fire Department volunteers took a brief time out from their heroic duties to don a different kind of superhero suit. Jolly old Santa himself — and his elves — delivered toys to each child on NUMC Pediatrics ward and spread a little holiday cheer. The volunteer firefighters brought at least one toy per child, hoping to brighten the day for children suffering from various illnesses. The volunteer firefighters were joined by NUMC officials.

Nassau Fire Service Support USMC Toys for Tots Representatives of the various Nassau County Fire Service Organizations attended the Press Club of Long Island Holiday Party to support the USMC Toys for Tots program.

Local Fire Bands at Metlife

On November 12, 2015, the West Islip Fire Department Brewers Band along with their friends from Central Islip and East Farmingdale marching bands, participated in the First Responders Night and half time show at the New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills game at Metlife Stadium. The three bands put on a fantastic show for a sold-out crowd. Commissioner Jeff Kempf from West Islip Fire Department and Commissioner Scott Gerbasio from East Farmingdale Fire Company, were chosen to be honorary captains for the coin toss. John Kesler, president of the West Islip Brewers Band, would like to greatly thank the band members of Central Islip and East Farmingdale for joining them in this great experience.

The Old and New in Melville

In 1967, Station One on Amityville and Walt Whitman Roads became the Melville Fire Department’s second firehouse. As the area grew a larger facility became necessary. In 2012 the Board of Fire Commissioners and members approved the construction of a new firehouse on the same grounds. Obituaries

M-LFD’s FF James Tallon On December 15, 2015, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Company #1 mourned the loss of Firefighter James Tallon.

James joined the ambulance unit of the M-LFD in February 2008. Since then James worked hard, attending all trainings, classes and standbys. James attended EMT training at the Nassau County EMS academy, successfully becoming an EMT. In September of 2009 James Tallon was voted and accepted to be a member of Company #1. He worked just as hard at all fire academy classes and events attended. James obtained the ranks of Sergeant-at-Arms of the auxiliary in 2013. Then a year later become Sergeant-at-Arms of both the company and auxiliary. James took his position seriously and always made sure members were reminded to keep uniforms clean and pressed and to make sure no member lost any badges or pins.

James was a proud member of Company #1, the ambulance unit, and was proud to represent the whole department. James always lent a hand whenever someone needed something.He was a great friend to have around, and will be missed.

Bethpage’s Frank Ciraulo The Bethpage Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the passing of Frank Ciraulo, age 86.

Frank joined the BFD in 1959 at the age of 29 and served in Engine Company 5 for 57 years. He is a former Captain of Engine Co. 5 and was made an honorary Deputy Chief in 2003. Frank was a veteran of the US Navy, joining at age 17. He has three adult children and was predeceased by his wife Antoinette (‘Annie’).

Frank stayed active in his retirement by working as a part time firehouse maintainer for the Bethpage Fire District. He took care of his beloved Station 5 and watched the transition to the new firehouse in 2015.

Frank Ciraulo was affectionately called the”"Godfather of Company 5.”

LONG ISLAND’S WATERWAY MOBILE PUMP TESTING! After numerous requests from its customers over the years, last summer, Waterway Long Island began providing a mobile pump testing service. Utilizing a Weis Draft Commander 3000, Waterway personnel and equipment travel to local departments to perform the required testing conveniently at the fire station or maintenance shop. Under the NFPA 1911-2012 edition apparatus pump performance testing is required to be conducted at least annually, after a major repair, or after a major pump modification.

The Draft Commander is a fully-mobile trailered unit consisting of a 3000-gallon water reservoir, calibrated dual pitot monitoring stations, and all necessary suction and discharge hoses, fittings, and adapters necessary to perform the complete NFPA pump test at the choice of location determined by the fire department. While there are over 100 Draft Commander units in service worldwide by apparatus manufacturers, military, fire departments and apparatus service companies, Waterway operates the only one located on Long Island. The unit allows Waterway personnel to perform a true pump test from draft with cool, clean water and is environmentally friendly, recycling the test water.

The mobile pump testing unit is capable of testing up to a 3000GPM pump, or (2) 1500-GPM pumps simultaneously. Most departments entire pump inventory can be completed in only a day or two.

Some of the benefits of on-site testing include less downtime of apparatus since they remain in district, ability to be removed immediately from the test in the event they are needed to respond to an alarm, and minor repairs can be made and apparatus re-retested the same day if necessary. The fire department needs only to supply the apparatus to be tested and a water supply; Waterway personnel takes care of all other functions.

All components of the NFPA test are performed including the dry vacuum, primer, engine governor, pump shift, tank-to-pump flow rate test, pump performance, pressure control device, intake relief valve test, and more.

Fully compliant printed test result forms are supplied to the department in a timely manner. If desired, results can also be supplied on CD, via e-mail, or on-line, 24/7, through a secure website.

Obituary

Central Islip’s George T. Clancy

Honorary Chief George T. Clancy of the Central Islip Fire Department answered his last alarm on October 26, 2015.

Chief Clancy was a member of the department for 62 years, serving as a member of Engine & Hose Company #1 since 1953, and was also a member of the Hoboes Drill Team. He was truly one of the most beloved members in the 110-year history of the department and will be remembered always for his dedication as a firefighter, his easy manner, friendship and laughter, his wonderful example to all, and his incredible cooking skills.

Anyone who ever attended an organizational meeting or dinner at CI over the years was treated to his culinary expertise, particularly on St. Patrick’s Day with his extraordinary corned beef and cabbage! Chief Clancy’s impact on those with whom he served cannot be measured or ever forgotten.

The chiefs, officers and members of the Central Islip Fire Department extend their heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends. He will be remembered always.

Wantagh’s Ex-Captain Denis Carroll there safe, you are of no help to anyone.”

Ex-Captain Denis Carroll, 57, a resident of Denis was a member of the Volunteer and Levittown and a 27-year member of the Exempt Firemen’s Benevolent Association of Wantagh Fire Department, passed suddenly on Wantagh and during his 27-year career was the December 21, 2015. recipient of two Unit Citations.

Denis was born and raised in Levittown and Denis was married to his wife, Joanne, for attended local schools. He was a graduate of 14-years and they have a large family. Remembering Our Military Heroes On January 2, 2016, hundreds of people gathered to pay respect for the funeral of SSgt Louis Bonacasa. Sgt. Joseph Lemm, a detective with the NYPD who was killed in the same attack, was laid to rest on December 30, 2015.

In the true tradition of showing support for our military, the Coram Fire Department opened their doors to the family of SSgt Bonacasa and a family gathering was held at Coram’s Headquarters.

Obituary

Greenport’s Kenneth E. White, Jr.

Ken White, 73, was a long-time resident of Greenport. He was a 40year member of the Greenport Fire Department where he served as Chief, and 1st and 2nd Lieutenant. He was a member of the Standard Hose Fire Company and was chief driver. He also served as Warden and Chairman of the Fire Prevention Committee, house man and Dispatcher for the Cutchogue Fire Department. Ken loved cooking for the department.

He is survived by his wife Jerri, four daughters, nine grandchildren and a great granddaughter. He was buried at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations may be made to Greenport Fire Department or East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation.

Rest in peace my friend. We will all miss you.
