Meet Niko: FRES’ Facility Dog
On October 20, 2025, Suffolk County Executive Edward P. Romaine visited Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) to meet and welcome Niko, the department’s new Facility Dog. Niko is an adorable two-year-old Labrador/Golden Retriever mix.
Before ever putting a paw in FRES, Niko learned basic socialization, and obedience as part of America’s Vets Dogs’ collective training. Niko’s extreme intelligence and gentle empathy naturally led him to his current role as
the new FRES Facility Dog.
Working in fire and emergency medical services can definitely take a toll on responders. Knowing this, County Executive Romaine and Commissioner Rudy Sunderman decided to prioritize the well-being and mental health of every division in FRES. The Fire Marshal’s Office, Communications, Office of Emergency Management, Office of Emergency Medical Services, Office of Budget and Finance, and those in the Commissioner’s
Office are already benefiting from Niko's daily visits.
Niko’s handler, Fire Marshal Nicole Pannhurst, has completed the required training, officially making Niko the new FRES facility
Be on the lookout for Niko’s wagging tail at upcoming fire prevention and community events around Suffolk County and be sure to stop and say hello.
