Reflections It is November 14, 2019, as I write my December editorial. My head is spinning as I recollect the good and bad points of recent months. As I sit back and reflect, I leave 2019 with mixed emotions. As Fire News moves into its 47th year of publication, we continue to grow, playing an integral part of the entire fire service. I give thanks to the departments that have reached out to Fire News with positive news about their department. Let’s face it, if you don’t blow your own horn, no one else will … but do something wrong and see how quickly you make the news! As individuals, hopefully you have grown as a responder in your department and are prouder than ever to serve. You, the responder, continue to do a job that at times appears thankless and has become more difficult than in the past. You train to be the best that you can be at your profession. Whether you are a paid responder or a volunteer, training has increased to a point that it reiterates the saying, “Being a first responder is not a job, but a lifestyle.” As the year comes to an end, I thank all of you for your dedication and commitment to keeping your community safe.
As we enter the holiday season, I ask you to give thought and remember the families of the fallen, especially to Lieutenant Jason Menard, who was killed while saving fellow firefighters who were trapped in a recent blaze in Worcester, Massachusetts. Sadly, but proudly, Fire News honored as many responders as we could. Whether or not it was an LODD or a death from natural causes, we made the effort to honor as many members as possible in our paper. We were proud to honor those individuals who gave their life to the fire-rescue and emergency services. To date, there have been 51 firefighter fatalities in the United States. If your department had the misfortune of losing a member, please reach out to the families during the holidays to let them know you are there for them. For you, quitting is not an option. Make the people who we have lost this year proud of you. Train like you mean it, respond to calls with the passion that you may be saving a family member and remember the lessons learned from the heroes of the past. Wearing a uniform shows you are a member
of an organization. When you wear your uniform, wear it with meaning. The next time you put on your uniform, wear it with dignity and ask yourself if you are really doing all you can do to deserve the title of being a first responder. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. On behalf of Fire News, I thank you for what you do. Reflect on 2019 and ask yourself how you can do more in 2020. Happy holidays! - Dennis
Announcements SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE $78K IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THE WEST HEMPSTEAD FIRE DISTRICT IN NASSAU COUNTY Funding Will Be Used to Help Recruit New Firefighters and Implement Fire Safety Community Outreach Washington, DC - U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $78,000 in federal funding for the West Hempstead Fire District in Nassau County. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Program (SAFER) and will be used to help recruit firefighters through an outreach program. Specifically, the West Hempstead Fire District plans to use the funding to improve its online and social media presence to recruit young people to become firefighters. The West Hempstead Fire District also plans to expand its print outreach initiatives by creating pamphlets on fire safety and recruitment. “Whether it’s a fire or any other emergency, we depend on these local heroes to keep us safe, and they depend on us to give them the resources they need to do their jobs effectively,” said Senator Schumer. “This funding will allow West Hempstead Fire District to recruit more firefighters and educate the public on fire safety, which will help local fire departments ensure a speedy and effective response to any emergency. I’m proud to announce this federal investment, and will continue fighting to make sure that fire departments across Long Island have the tools and resources they need.” “I am proud to announce this funding for the West Hempstead Fire District, which will help recruit the next generation of first responders and educate the community on fire safety,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Our hardworking firefighters are the first line of defense when responding to local emergencies, and this funding will help keep our communities safe. I will do everything I can in the Senate to ensure that our local fire departments have the resources they need.”
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Program (SAFER) is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the department’s United States Fire Administration. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis to the applicants that most closely address the program’s priorities and demonstrate financial need. The funding is used to hire and retain firefighters so that fire departments can be staffed at all times. YAPHANK FIRE DEPARTMENT CHRISTMAS PARADE Yaphank Fire Department will be hosting their 11th Annual Christmas Parade and Craft Fair on Saturday, December 7, 2019 (rain date is December 8, 2019). The craft fair begins at 1500. The parade will kick off at 1630 on the east end of Main Street, and the tree lighting will immediately follow. All fire departments and groups are encouraged to participate. There will be awards given for Best Float, Best Decorated Fire Truck and Most Spirited Marchers. If you are interested in being in the parade and/or bringing a float, firetrucks, etc., please contact Sarah at 631-983-9637 for further information. YAPHANK FIRE DEPARTMENT BLOOD DRIVE Yaphank Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a Blood Drive on Saturday, December 28, 2019, in the ambulance bays from 1000 to 1600 at the Yaphank Firehouse, 31 Main Street, Yaphank. Cover Story
West Babylon Shed Fire Extends The West Babylon Fire Department was called to a house fire on Webster Drive just before 0800 on October 14, 2019. Chief of Department Schumann arrived to find a shed next to the house fully involved and extending into the house in the garage, second floor and attic. First Assistant Chief Sullo handled operations as units arrived. Engine 1-9-2 stretched the first line, while other crews stretched a second line to the exterior to extinguish the fire in the shed and exterior of the house. The crews from Ladder 1-9-4 and Heavy Rescue 1-9-15 laddered, vented and searched. It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control with no reported injuries. Also responding were North Lindenhurst along with the Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corps rehab vehicle. Lindenhurst stood by at West Babylon. Heavy Damage at Valley Stream Fire
The second floor of a Valley Stream home was heavily damaged by fire on October 22, 2019. The call for the blaze on Sloan Drive South came in just after 1000 and brought units from Valley Stream and several mutual aid departments. Suspicious Fire in Patchogue

Glen Cove House Fire

Access Blocked at Bohemia Blaze
On September 22, 2019, at 2240, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a structure fire near the intersection of Johnson Avenue and Carlough Road. Chief of Department Brian O’Neill arrived to fire showing on the 2 side of the building in the basement and first floor. Engine 1 began stretching a line to the building when it was determined that the first floor behind the front door had begun collapsing. Crews stretched the line to the rear and encountered difficulty gaining access due to concrete barriers blocking access to the basement entrance. After gaining access, an aggressive attack was made and all visible fire was knocked down. Garden City 2-Alarmer
On the morning of October 15, 2019, firefighters operated at a two-alarm house fire on Avalon Road in Garden City. The main body of fire was in the attic of a two-story split-level private dwelling. Three handlines were stretched with at least two being put into operation. Among the departments called for mutual aid were Franklin Square, New Hyde Park, Mineola and Westbury among others. All occupants made it out safely and the cause of the fire was under investigation. Commack Car Fire The Commack Fire Department responded to a fire on Partridge Drive in Commack on October 23, 2019, at 0430. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fully involved pick-up truck in the driveway of an occupied home. Flames were quickly extinguished before they extended. Quick Stop in Valley Stream On the afternoon of October 24, 2019, the Valley Stream Fire Department was called to a house fire on Orchard Place in the dead end off of Liberty Boulevard. When firefighters arrived, they found a fire in the basement of a two-story private dwelling. Mutual aid came from Malverne and Lynbrook. Firefighters stretched two handlines and put one into operation resulting in a quick knockdown. Brentwood House Fire On November 1, 2019, the Brentwood Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on King Street. Commanding units arrived to smoke showing from a basement entrance. Mutual aid was brought in from West Islip, Bay Shore and Brentwood Legion Ambulance. The fire was quickly knocked down by first-due crews without any incident. No injuries were reported. Lakeview Home Engulfed on Arrival The Lakeview Fire Department was alerted for a working house fire just a block from their headquarters on Woodfield Road on October 14, 2019. Nothing There at Melville Call On October 14, 2019, the Melville Fire Department was activated for a commercial structure fire at the Fortunoff’s shopping center on Broadhollow Road. Reports were coming in of smoke coming from the rear of the building. Stores in the shopping center were evacuated. Massapequa BBQ, House Fire
The Massapequa Fire Department was called to house fire on Shinnecock Avenue about 2300 on September 25, 2019. Chief of Department Stansberry and Assistant Chiefs Batt, Monjardo and Maneri were advised that Nassau County Police were reporting a working fire. Chief Maneri arrived to heavy fire showing from the rear of a single-story house where a BBQ and four propane tanks were starting to burn. Engine 634 stretched the first line to the propane tanks and, once the fire was knocked down around the
tanks, brought the line into the house. Engine 6314 stretched a second line to rear to knock down any remaining exterior fire and to cool the tanks. Ladder 632 searched and vented. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control. The family exited the house with pets prior to the fire department arrival. Mutual aid came from Amityville and South Farmingdale. Home Burns in Manorville
On November 3, 2019, just after 2000, the Manorville Fire Department responded for a chimney fire on Carol Avenue, between Florence Drive and Linda Lane. Manorville Ambulance, and SCPD also responded. The main body of fire was confined to

Westbury Diner Fire
Early on September 26, 2019, the Westbury Fire Department was called to a structure fire at the Harvest Diner on Old Country Road. Westbury Chief of Department Kenny Gass reported a kitchen fire with flames through the roof and asked the first handline be stretched to the rear of the building. As firefighters began operating inside the building, the fire quickly spread throughout, forcing crews to go to an exterior attack and place tower ladders in operation. The fire reached a multi-alarm equivalency bringing in sever-
al mutual aid units to the scene and for standby including Jericho, Hicksville, Syosset, Bethpage, Mineola, Garden City, Hempstead and East Meadow. The diner was closed at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries. The fire was under investigation. Plainview Garbage Truck Fire
Just before 0300 on October 17, 2019, the Plainview Fire Department was alerted for a truck fire at the rear of stores on Old Bethpage Road near Round Swamp Road. First units encountered a fully involved cab on a garbage truck with the fire spreading to the hopper. Engines 9544 and 9522, Heavy Rescue 957, Ambulance 9529 and Fire Police Units 955 and 9545 responded along with all three chiefs. Crews stretched and operated two lines to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes. The driver of the truck exited the vehicle uninjured. Electric Fire in Hicksville Shop On September 9, 2019, the Syosset Fire Department was alerted for a fire inside the Massage Envy store on South Oyster Bay Road. Arriving units found an electrical outlet on fire. Employees used a fire extinguisher to knock the fire down and fire crews shut the power off to the burning outlet and removed the sheetrock around it to make sure there was no fire in the wall. Valley Stream Apartment Fire The Valley Stream Fire Department received an alarm for an outside rubbish fire at the rear of an apartment complex on North Corona Avenue on the morning of September 30, 2019. On arrival, units discovered the flames had quickly spread to the interior of the building and a general alarm was sounded. The flames began to engulf a nearby apartment and spread into the attic. Good Stop at Garden City Park Fire On the night of October 27, 2019, the Garden City Park Fire Department was called to a house fire on Fourth Avenue off Railroad Avenue. Firefighters were met with smoke showing and fire in the basement of a twostory private dwelling. Mineola was designated the FAST with Heavy Rescue 1610. Firefighters stretched and operated two handlines, resulting in a quick knockdown and containment to the basement. All occupants made it out safely. Bethpage 2-Car MVA On September 20, 2019, at 0423, the Bethpage Fire Department was alerted for an MVA with pin at the intersection of Stewart Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike. Arriving units found a two-car accident with no entrapment. Crews applied drying agent to large fluid spills in the roadway. Driver Arrested in Wyandanch Crash
The Wyandanch Fire Company and Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corps responded to an MVA with reported entrapment and car fire at Long Island Avenue and Little East Neck Road on the afternoon of October 16, 2019. The driver of a sedan collided head on with a box truck causing the car to catch fire, destroying it and damaging the truck. First Assistant Chief Archer responded along with Engines 1-10-2, 1-10-3, Mini Pumper/Rescue 1-10-8 and Heavy Rescue 1-10-7. Crews put one line into operation and had the fire extinguished in about 10 minutes. The driver was taken into custody by police and then taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, along with the driver of the truck, by ambulances from Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights. - Fire News photos by Paul Mazza

Police, Samaritans Save Man at Huntington Car Fire
On October 19, 2019, the Huntington Manor Fire Department was activated for an MVA with reported car fire on Walt Whitman Road. Commanding units arrived to find a fully engulfed vehicle against the guard rail. The fire was quickly knocked down. Prior to fire units arrival, two Suffolk County Police officers, along with several good Samaritans, pulled the driver out of the vehicle. Brentwood MVA with Overturn
On October 19, 2019, the Brentwood Fire Department and Brentwood Legion Ambulance were activated for an MVA with reported overturn at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and O’Rourke Street. Commanding units were met with an MVA involving two vehicles. The crew of Rescue 18 secured both vehicles, and Suffolk County Police ESU uprighted one vehicle. 1 Injured in Medford 2-Car On October 16, 2019, the Medford Fire Department and Medford Volunteer Ambulance Company were activated for an MVA with reported heavy rescue at the intersection of Masonic and North Ocean Avenues. 2 Injured in Melville Rollover The Melville Fire Department and Suffolk County Police responded to a single-car accident on Ruland Road at around 0200 on October 19, 2019. First Assistant Chief Kaplan and Second Assistant Chief Schmitt found a sedan went off the road and crashed through two utility poles, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times, eventually landing on its wheels in a parking lot. The driver was heavily entrapped and a passenger was found lying on the ground next to the car. Engine 2-5-7, Heavy Rescue 2-5-12 and Ambulances 2-5-15 and 2-5-45 responded along with First Responders 2-5-80 and 2-5-Able. Crews extricated the driver in about 20 minutes. Both of the injured were taken by ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center. West Babylon Wetdown On November 9, 2019, the West Babylon Fire Department held a dedication and wetdown for their new 2019 Pierce Impel Engine 1-9-3. Sound Beach Open House
On October 18, 2019, the Sound Beach Fire Department held its annual Fire Prevention Open House. Events included a heavy rescue extrication demonstration, a “Stop the Bleed� lesson from Stony Brook University Hospital nurses, and a chance for children to use a real hoseline. Red Knights Scholarship Fund Charity Ride
On October 13, 2019, New York Chapter 43 of the Red Knights International Motorcycle Club held its annual motorcycle charity ride in order to raise funds for the Keith Fairben Paramedic Scholarship Fund. The ride began at the Applebee’s in New Hyde Park and took its participants to Jones Beach and back to the Elks Lodge in New Hyde Park fora barbeque and charity raffles. The scholarship, named in honor of First Lieutenant Keith Fairben of the Floral Park Fire Department who gave his life saving others on 9/11, is used to help fund scholarships for first responders in Nassau County who want to pursue paramedic certification. Any active member of a fire department in Nassau County who would like information on this program is encouraged to reach out to the fund by contacting Paul Pinto, Fund Chairman, at the Floral Park Fire Department at 516326-6328. Fundraiser and Training Combined in Merrick
From October 18 through 20, 2019, PL Vulcan Fire Training Concepts held 2-1/2 days of classroom and hands-on training. The classroom session took place at Friendship Engine and Hose on Meadowbrook Road in Merrick. The hands-on portion was held at the Four Towns Training Center in Merrick. Those enrolled cycled through nine hands-on stations at the training center including roof

Paratech Holds Tech Rescue Drill
On September 29, 2019, Paratech, a manufacturer of emergency service products (specifically technical rescue tools), held a technical rescue team drill in the rear of Freeport Truck Company’s quarters. Restoration Kitchen Donates to Pendergast Fund
On September 26, 2019, the owners of Restoration Kitchen Restaurant in Lindenhurst presented the Heather Pendergast Fund with a donation check. The restaurant donates profits to charities on Long Island. The Heather Pendergast Fund gives assistance to Long Island volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel who have a child with a life-threatening medical problem. Syosset Moves, Re-dedicates LODD Memorial On September 8, 2019, officials from the Syosset Fire District and the Town of Oyster Bay held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Syosset’s Firefighters Memorial Park. With members of the Syosset Fire Department, along with residents from the community, the ceremony, led by Fire Commissioner Giovanni L. Graceffa, included a benediction and blessing from the department’s Deacon Ted Kolakowski, speeches from Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and former New York State Senator Carl Marcellino, and paid tribute to the four department members whose names appear on its Line of Duty Deaths monument. Each name on the monument was honored by having family members place a Maltese Cross floral arrangement in front of the monument. The ceremony also included the singing of The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America by Syosset High School Senior Talia Schatz, and the playing of Taps by recent Syosset High School graduate Matthew Wong. Located across from its headquarters facility at 50 Cold Spring Road, the park is the new home for the monument, which was previously located at Syosset Memorial Park. Nassau Museum Holds Badge of Courage Dinner
On October 18, 2019, the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center held their Badge of Courage celebration. Erin Colton received the Keith Lane Memorial Excellence in Journalism Award. Allen Walther (NBFD) and Michael Ornauer (LBFD) were posthumously inducted to the museum’s Hall of Fame There was also a special presentation in which Thomas Pendl’s badges were presented to his mother. Thomas was an honorary Chief with 47 years in the Bethpage Fire Department before his 2017 passing. His father Frank was instrumental in getting the fire museum started. Remembering NYPD’s Lou Alvarez
On September 13, 2019, the Oceanside Fire Department joined the community and attended “A Night for Lou” — a candlelight vigil held to remember the life of retired NYPD Bomb Squad Detective Lou Alvarez, an Oceanside native who passed away in June 2019 after battling a 9/11 related cancer. Lou was not only known for his own fight with cancer but fighting to ensure other 9/11 responders would be taken care of. This meant traveling to Washington, DC, with comedian Jon Stewart to advocate for future funding despite dozens of rounds of chemotherapy. These efforts proved successful
when one month after Lou’s passing the president signed the 9/11 victim’s compensation fund bill which extended funding for 9/11 responders until the year 2090. At the Friday evening candlelight vigil hundreds from the Oceanside community attended along with several dignitaries. The event was held at Schoolhouse Green opposite Oceanside Fire Headquarters. Lieneck Honored at Deer Park Open House On October 5, 2019, the Deer Park Fire Department held their annual Fire Prevention Open House. Before the open house started, the department, along with Town of Babylon and Suffolk County elected officials, honored Gina Lieneck, the mother of Brianna Lieneck who was killed in a boating accident 14 years ago in the Great South Bay. Gina’s hard work, along with many town officials, helped with the passage of Brianna’s Law, which will phase in requirements that all operators of motorized watercraft must complete a stateapproved boating safety course. The fire prevention event was held at Deer Park’s training center. The public was able to see a live burn of a car, an extrication from an MVA and a firefighter bail out from the second floor of the training building. The Suffolk County Sheriff Department demonstrated the proper way to install child safety seats. On September 9, 2009, at 0302, Huntington Manor Chaplain and Fire Police Captain Richard Holst was returning home from a previous alarm when he noticed smoke coming from the Uber Café, a bagel store on Depot Road. After calling in the fire to the dispatcher, Rich did a size up of the building and checked the adjoining businesses that were open for occupants. As units began arriving on the scene, Rich collapsed and suffered a fatal heart attack. Glen Cove Gets New Tiller
On September 28, 2019, Hook and Ladder Company 1 of the Glen Cove Fire Department held a wetdown for their new Ladder 5211, a 2018 Seagrave 100-foot Attacker HD Tiller. Placed into service in early 2019, the new 5211 replaces a 1987 Seagrave that served the department for 32 years. On September 14, 2019, the Glen Cove Fire Department held their annual inspection at the Glen Cove firehouse. Members were inspected on apparatus and member readiness, as well as percentage of company members present. Congratulations to Chemical Engine Company on winning Best Appearing, and Pacific Engine Company on Highest Percentage. Girl Saved by NCP Medics, Pendergast Fund Donates AED
On May 8, 2019, the Nassau County Police responded to a unresponsive 13-year-old girl in her home in Westbury. NCPD Medics Robert Spear and Robert Roper applied advanced life saving measures and restored the girl’s pulse and BP. She was transported to Nassau University Medical Center, where she was stabilized and sent to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center where she received open heart surgery. Later Medics Spear and Roper contacted the Heather Pendergast Fund asking if they would donate an AED to the Viscusi family so that they would have the device in case Kayla has another problem. On September 12, 2019, the medics and police officers who initially responded to Kayla’s home were honored at Nassau County Police Headquarters by Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. Plainview Juniors Train
Lieutenant David Walker of the Plainview Fire Department gave a hands-on training to the junior firefighters on proper hose handling and nozzle operations when fighting fire. The Plainview Fire Department looks to the junior firefighters as future recruits and events such as these to help with volunteer retention. By the end of the night, juniors understood the components of a hose and nozzle, and advancing a hose line, opening and closing a line, and fire streams and water pressure. 117 Nassau Juniors Earn German Junior Firefighter Knowledge Award As part of the exchange program between the United States and Germany, the German Government allowed US juniors and Explorers to earn the German Junior Firefighter Knowledge Award. The award consisted of knowledge of procedures, equipment, first aid and knots. Juniors 10- to 12-years old would earn Part 1 of the award; Juniors 13 to 17 would earn part 2. The process started with the team in Germany translating all the documents into English to distribute to the junior companies. The juniors attending Camp Fahrenheit 516 had it worked into their curriculum. Since there was an interest by others to earn this award, a special training was set up at night at the Uniondale Fire Department for those interested to attend. We were very proud to be able to earn such an award, especially since it was the first time ever to be given to anyone outside Germany. When it was proposed to the German Government, we thought it would be a long task to be approved, but instead it met very little opposition and was quickly approved. We are looking forward to their return in 2020. There were 24 different junior fire departments that participated in this award and most have already given the approval for them to wear this award on their Class As. - Fire News photos provided

PRE-CONFERENCE ISO ACADEMY BY DODSON AND WHITEHEAD Prior to the 2020 FDSOA Annual Health and Safety Conference at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz., there will be a two-day Incident Safety Officer (ISO) Academy beginning on Monday, January 13th. This Academy is an intensive workshop focusing on the requirements of an effective ISO. The course is intended for any fire department personnel who is or wants to be an ISO, and it is also an excellent tool to help prepare participants for the FDSOA ISO Certification exam. “The workshop will build confidence in anyone who is called on to be an ISO,” said Dave Dodson, one of the instructors. “It gives them a can-do attitude.” Upon completion of the Academy, interested participants are eligible to take the exam for National Certification onsite Tuesday or Wednesday evening, or by using an approved proctor at a later date. The exam fee is included in the Academy registration. The recommended text for this course is Fire Department Incident Safety Officer, 3rd Edition. David W. Dodson.
