Are You Salty?

I started my buffing days during my childhood at approximately 10 or 11 years of age. I would monitor my crystal scanner and when I heard a call that was in my neighborhood, I’d race to the address on my bicycle, many times beating the rigs to the scene. I remember the excitement I experienced watching the local heroes go to work. I’d stare at the firefighters with a smile as they emerged victorious from the taxpayer that was no longer on fire. I remember the smiles, the waves, and occasional comments I received from my heroes, who eventually got to know me. What I remember most was the soot covered and burned helmets and gear of the firefighters. To this day, I remember the dirty, sweaty faces of firefighters standing by their rigs as they lit up a cigarette and enjoyed a cup of coffee that was provided by the Salvation Army, who also responded to every working fire. Yes, I soon learned that my vision was a sign of greatness.

Later in life, I became a firefighter in my local community on Long Island. When I received my new gear and shiny helmet, I couldn’t wait to fight my first fire, so that my gear didn’t stand out like a sore spot amongst the other members of my company. It didn’t take long for my wife and kids to cover their noses as I walked into my home, wreaking of the smells from my childhood dream.

Several years ago, we realized that the toxins that firefighters were carrying home with them were carcinogenic. We realized that the toxic soot from the exhaust of our trucks, covered the walls of the firehouse and our gear.

We realized that dirty gear and helmets were putting us at risk for cancer. We also found out that SCBA should be worn during overhaul and until you exit the fire building.

As responders, we must have yearly training about hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens. I took my first hazmat and blood-borne refresher course approximately 25 years ago. It didn’t take long for all of us to pay serious attention to the lessons learned when we operated at calls where blood and body fluids were present — calls like motor vehicle accidents. However, we still liked that burned, dirty and smelly look from fighting fires. Guess what? The old salty look is out of style because we now realize that the toxins we carry back to the firehouse and to our homes are making us sick.

In the 2018, the first issue, of the FDNY’s WNYF, there is a terrific article written by Deputy Chief Joseph M. Jardin addressing the national efforts on cancer issues in the fire service. Chief Jardin points out that the IAFF, the IAFC, the NFPA, the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation, the Firefighter Cancer

Support Network and the Illinois Fire Service Institute are concentrating on cancer in the fire service. He also discusses the proactive plan that the FDNY has put in place to reduce the risk of cancer.

I urge you to visit the websites of these groups to learn what you can do to reduce the risk of cancer. Your department should – or rather must – put a plan into effect that will change the mindset of the past. Remember “Clean is the New Salty!”

Announcements H.R. 931: FIREFIGHTER CANCER REGISTRY ACT OF 2018 SIGNED BY PRESIDENT TRUMP

H.R. 931 requires the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop and maintain a registry to collect data regarding the incidence of cancer in firefighters. This bill authorizes $10 million for fiscal years 2018-2022 to carry out those activities.

Firefighters may experience detrimental health effects due to smoke inhalation and other harmful substances. A 2015 study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found that firefighters in the U.S. have a greater number of cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths. H.R. 931 seeks to establish and improve collection activities to collect a greater abundance of data and assist in developing new protocols and safeguards to protect firefighters.

MEASURE FOR COMMEMORATIVE 9/11 LICENSE PLATES IS NOW LAW

On August 27, 2018, Senator Ken LaValle announced his measure to create commemorative 9/11 license plates is now law. The legislation also provides for funds to be donated to the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program The bill (S6072/A.7715) commemorates the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by authorizing the issuance of distinctive commemorative license plates. Portions of the charges collected for the plate would be used for the purpose of providing scholarship money for the families of the September 11 victims.

Senator Ken LaValle said, “On September 11, 2001, our nation and, in particular our state, experienced an unforgettable tragedy. Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The new license plates will provide a measure of comfort for the fami-

lies of those who tragically lost loved ones on that day. An additional measure of relief will be knowing children of the deceased will be able to access scholarship funds for college tuition. I am pleased that this measure was signed into law.”

The legislation authorizes NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to create distinctive commemorative New York State license plates. Portions of the fees for the plates would be collected and deposited into the “World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program.” An annual service charge of $25 would be applied to the plates by the DMV, of which $20 of this annual sum shall be deposited to the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program, which was established under section 608 of the Education Law. Assemblyman Fred Thiele was the sponsor of the legislation in the Assembly.

CENTRAL ISLIP FIRE PREVENTION OPEN HOUSE

The Central Islip Fire Department will be holding their Annual Fire Prevention Week Open House on Friday, October 12, 2018, from 1830 to 2100. This annual event will be held at the Central Islip Fire Department’s Station 2, 110 Wheeler Road, Central Islip. There will be many fire prevention displays, demonstrations, a free child identification program, a poster and essay contest, winner’s recognition, as well as free, giveaways and fire safety educational materials. Everyone is invited to this informative and fun filled evening. We hope to see you there!

Atlantic Beach Rescue to Start Using Drones

By J. Olsen PIO, Atlantic Beach Rescue The Atlantic Beach Rescue (ABR) will soon begin using aerial drones to help support missions such as water rescue, disaster response and, if requested, aerial observations of working fires.

Following in the footsteps of the FDNY and other progressive response agencies nationwide, the program launched in mid-August with a single drone, which will be used by ABR on the Long Beach barrier island. It will be available to other first response agencies upon request pursuant to the New York State Fire Mutual Aid Compact.

The drone weighs eight pounds and incorporates both high-definition and infrared cameras, allowing the drone to transmit live images as well as a heat print of a rescue or fire operation to the Incident Commander (IC).

The drones are more cost effective than manned aircraft and can be used in dangerous situations and environments without putting first responders in harm’s way. They are not meant to replace, but to supplement, aviation response. The drone’s state-of-the-art technology will improve the ability to respond to situ-

ations quickly and effectively. Officials say the equipment will also protect first responders by doing jobs too hazardous for humans. The drone will be able to provide live-time photographs and FLIR (forward looking infrared) to the ICs. In a prepared written statement, the chiefs of

the ABR noted, “Following the recent drowning deaths in Long Beach earlier this summer and the loss of one of our Village residents in a paddle boarding accident two summers ago, we concluded that the addition of this piece of equipment was critical to our rescue response capabilities. It took us over a year to identify

the correct hard asset, obtain the required training and funding and develop the procedures and protocols [for] this program. The chiefs of the Atlantic Beach Rescue … want people to know that [the drones will not be used for] surveillance. Video that ends up not having any first response purpose will be deleted after 30 days … It is an important tool that will make our members, and the people we protect, even safer.”

ABR works closely with the FAA to ensure the drone operates safely and adheres to all rules and policies regarding airspace in Nassau County and New York City. The FAA and other agencies operating fixed-wing aircraft in operation will be notified prior to flying the drone, for permission to deploy at night, or into FAA Class B Air Space- the FAA’s most restricted air space surrounding JFK Airport. Approvals take approximately 10 minutes and take place while the drone and its operators are responding to a rescue or fire.

All drone operators will be FAA certified and undergo handson training with the system. The operational procedures and protocols are modelled after the FDNY Command Tactical Unit which provided technical assistance and training for this project.

The drone program is being funded and supported by public and private grants.

Center Moriches Battles 4th of July Blaze On July 4, 2018, a home on Ashley Circle was heavily damaged when a fire gutted the attached garage.

The Center Moriches Fire Department and the Suffolk Police responded to the call. Additional resources were requested from East Moriches, Eastport, Mastic, Manorville, Mastic Beach and Manorville Community Ambulance. The fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes.

Flames on Arrival in Dix Hills

The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to a house fire on Carll’s Straight Path in Dix Hills on August 4, 2018.

Firefighters arrived to a heavy fire condition on the second floor of the home. All occupants were able to safely evacuate prior to the arrival of fire units. Mutual aid companies from Bethpage, Deer Park, Commack and Commack Ambulance operated at the scene. The blaze was brought under control in 20 minutes with overhaul taking another hour.

Factory Fire in Deer Park

On the evening of July 29, 2018, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a factory fire on Brook Avenue. Third Assistant Chief Rob Macaluso advised Chief Phil Scarfi of heavy smoke and fire in the Atlantic Medical Supply building. Mutual aid was requested

from West Islip, North Babylon and Dix Hills. The first-due engine made entry and was able to knock down the fire before it could advance to attached units, although smoke did make its way into some.

4 Displaced in Lakeview Fire

The Lakeview Fire Department responded to the report of a house fire on the dead end of Cornell Avenue on July 19, 2018. Four residents were able to escape to safety after a fire broke out on the second floor of the two-story home. Red Cross representatives were on the scene to assist the displaced.

NY State Takes Away Firefighter Benefits Time for 1st Responders to Act! In October 2017, the New York State Department of Finance notified all Insurance Carriers who write Accident and Health policies for Emergency Service Departments and Fire Districts, that “illness” had to be removed from the policies altogether and that these policies would need to be rewritten. Due to this change, as of May 2018, the supplemental insurance known as “Accident and Health” or “Accident and Sickness” will no longer cover the emergency services of volunteers who contract an illness or have a heart attack in the line of duty.

This coverage supplements the VFBL and adds additional income and benefits that a volunteer would receive if they sustained an injury or illness in the line of duty. The new policy still covers volunteers if they are injured, however, if the volunteer suffers a heart attack in the line of duty, there is no supplemental coverage. The death benefit would also be removed for heart attack.

Another situation that would be affected by the change is if a volunteer were to be exposed to an illness like hepatitis or HIV. The NYS Department of Finance made this benefit “impermissible” because they claim that it, “plays on people’s fears of contracting particular diseases.” The VFBL would be the only source for income and benefits. The Accident and Health policy would no longer provide supplemental coverage.

We have received an overwhelming response from our clients that would like to see the “illness” portion added back to the Accident and Health policies. We are currently coordinating with our state representatives to garner support for this matter. If the change will affect you and your family, please contact your District, Department, or Corps and make your voice heard.

Together, we can work to regain this crucial benefit.

FF Injured in Bethpage One firefighter was injured and transported to North Shore University Hospital in Plainview on July 27, 2018, after battling a smoky basement fire on South Pershing Avenue in Bethpage. The fire heavily damaged the two-story home.

Two-Lines Operate in East Meadow Late on July 13, 2018, the East Meadow Fire Department was dispatched to report of smoke from a house. Second Assistant Chief Walsh arrived to find fire coming from the first floor and a Signal 10 was transmitted.

Engine 611 stretched the initial attack line to begin extinguishing the fire. Eventually, two lines were placed into operation.

Book Review

Rescue Crew

By Paul Hashagen with Matthew, Sarah and Sean Smith, and Allison and Timmy Hassell During Fire Prevention week, one of the most important missions that adults have is to make sure that children know that responders are friendly people who come to their homes to help them, should the need arise. Familiarity with local first responders creates a feeling of security and trust between the child and the responder.

As a parent, I always noticed the reactions kids had towards firefighters. At times we present a scary image. Only frequent visits to the firehouse, just to say hello, create a bond of trust that just might pay off when the responder is called to help the child or his family.

Thanks to author Paul Hashagen’s new book, Rescue Crew, your job of creating a friendly positive image about responders has just been made a little easier. Paul’s new book can be used by parents, teachers, first responders and children to show a simplified explanation of what you do as responders. Who are the people that keep you safe? What tools do they use? What type of emergencies could a child find himself involved with? In this well illustrated and fun book, anyone could easily read the captions on each page and hold a discussion with an audience of children about what the Rescue Crew is doing on each page. Scenarios in the book allow for creative discussions between the reader and the audience. The best way to show what responders do is to involve the listening audience in a discussion about what they would do if they were on the fire truck and at a call.

The book ends with Captain Jack’s Fire Safety Tips, followed by let-

ters from kids to the Rescue Crew. If you participate in school fire prevention programs or have groups of children visit your firehouse, Rescue Crew by Paul Hashagen is a book that children will love. I recommend that teachers read this book to their young students just before their local heroes visit their schools to talk about fire safety.

Hempstead House Fire

The Hempstead Fire Department was toned out for the report of a house fire on Courtenay Road on August 29, 2018. Fire could be seen on the exposure four side and engine companies quickly stretched their handlines to that location. Trucks opened up and the blaze was brought under control.

Farmingdale Home Destroyed On August 25, 2018, the Farmingdale Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on South Maple Street in Farmingdale. Huntington Manor Battles One Hot Barbecue!

As the temperatures soared into the 90s on August 5, 2018, the Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to a house fire caused by a propane barbecue on Queens Street in Huntington Station. The fuel line of the barbecue ruptured and set the back of the house and deck on fire. About 40 firefighters from Huntington Manor, Huntington and Greenlawn battled the blaze which was contained in 20 minutes, under the command of Second Assistant Chief Chuck Brady.

On May 21, 2018, a car fire was extinguished by the Medford Fire Department. The incident occurred on Peconic Avenue and Yonkers Avenue.

Brush Fire in Brookhaven On July 14, 2018, the Brookhaven Fire Department responded to a brush fire off of Montauk Highway. The fire was brought under control with the help of the department’s stump jumper.

The Woodmere Fire Department was alerted to a fire in a shoe repair shop on West Broadway on the afternoon of August 29, 2018. Smoke was visible on arrival and crews went to work, along with mutual aid companies, to bring the blaze under control.

Amityville’s Bulldog Grill Burns ‌and Then Some The Amityville Fire Department was called to a fire at the Bulldog Grille on Merrick Road around 0140 on August 28, 2018. Second Assistant Chief Budde and Third Assistant Chief Juliano arrived to find the second floor well involved and fire spreading across it.

Engine 1-1-2 advanced a line into the building to the second floor. The fire went through the roof and members were pulled from the building.

Amityville Ladder 1-1-5, Massapequa Ladder 636 and Engine 1-1-2 put their master streams into operation. The fire heavily damaged the business and it took about four hours to bring under control. Mutual aid was provided by Massapequa, Copiague, North Amityville, North Lindenhurst, Lindenhurst, East Farmingdale, West Babylon, Farmingdale, South Farmingdale and Seaford. The Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corps. also responded to assist in rehab for the firefighters. Crews returned to the scene, later on the evening of August 28 for another fire. Both were under investigation.

Jericho Fire Extends

Huntington Manor Hits Excavator Fire Members of the Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to a fire that engulfed an excavator behind the Outback Steakhouse on New York Avenue in Huntington Station on August 10, 2018.

Two engines responded under the command of Second Assistant Chief Chuck Brady, and crews quickly had the blaze under control. There were no injuries reported.

Lightning Strike Fire in Melville

The Melville Fire Department received a call of a fire caused by a lightning strike at Usdan Summer Camp on Colonial Springs Road on August 14, 2018. Units were under the command of Chief Chris Nolan and Assistant Chief Dave Kaplan. East Farmingdale, Dix Hills, Huntington Manor and Plainview assisted. One building was found fully involved upon arrival, and a second building heavily

damaged. The fire was placed under control within 30 minutes, with units operating on the scene for an additional two hours for extensive overhaul. A firefighter and an employee of the camp were transported to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

Fatal Fire Battled in Lakeland On June 18, 2018, the Lakeland Fire Department was activated for a residential fire on May Court.

Commanding units were met with heavy smoke showing from the basement entrance of the structure and requested mutual aid from Ronkonkoma, Central Islip, Bohemia, Hauppauge, East Brentwood, Nesconset and Farmingville. First-due crews made an aggressive attack on the blaze and located a male victim. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital via a Lakeland Ambulance in critical condition and later died from his injuries. Two firefighters were also transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Westbury Responds to the Mall Fire

A small fire broke out at the Zara clothing store on the main level of the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City on September 8, 2018.

Westbury firefighters responded. Fire trucks from several surrounding departments also responded to the scene at the south side

of the mall, directly opposite Macy’s. The blaze was quickly brought under control and cleanup crews from the mall were already busy mopping up the residual water. Surrounding businesses appeared unaffected.

Setauket Halts Flames

The Setauket Fire Department was called to a two-story home on Singingwood Lane in Poquot on August 16, 2018. Half of the rear deck of a home was fully involved and fire was spreading to the inside of the house. Quick action by the firefighters kept flames from getting past several rafters inside the structure. Stony Brook and Terryville also responded.

Storm Creates Havoc in Melville

On September 6, 2018, the Melville Fire Department was activated for a residential fire on Old East Neck Road. Command was met with smoke showing and requested mutual aid from East Farmingdale, the Village of Farmingdale and Wyandanch.

The fire was quickly knocked down by first-due crews without incident. The home was possibly struck by lightning during a passing storm.

Lightning Strike in Babylon The Babylon Fire Department was called to a fire at a home on Frederick Avenue on August 9, 2018.

Third Assistant Chief Miga found a shed in the rear yard of the house fully involved which had spread to a tree. Chief of Department Golub and Second Assistant Chief Arundale arrived, as did Engines 12-3 and 1-2-5, which put two lines into operation and had the fire quickly knocked down and under control within 30 minutes. It was believed to have been started by a lightning strike.

Health and Safety Officer We talk a lot about the incident Safety Officer (SO). But there is another person involved with safety who should not only be mentioned but should be in every organization: the Health and Safety Officer (HSO).

The HSO, as defined by Dave Dodson in Fire Department Safety Officer (3rd Edition), is “the individual assigned and authorized by the Chief as the manager of the Health and Safety program of the agency.” This was added into the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1521 in mid-1990s. The skills and knowledge of the HSO should be different of those for the SO and is more administrative.

The qualifications for the HSO should be a minimum of: • Health and Safety Officer (HSO) Nationally Certified; • An Incident Safety Officer (ISO) Nationally Certified; • A minimum of an Associate Degree in Fire Science; • Emergency Medical Technician experience; • A past Chief; • A minimum of 25 years of firefighting experience; • Fire Training Officer 1 Nationally Certified; • Fire and Safety Educator Nationally Certified.

Ex-chiefs who cannot qualify as a Class A Firefighter would make an excellent HSO. If no one wants the position, the agency should consider hiring one, even as a part-timer. This would satisfy insurance company requirements. The HSO should report to the chief the following on a regular basis; the latest LODDs, analysis of local data and comparisons to the national average, awareness level and priority of issues for first line officers, suggestion programs, committee meetings, an understanding of the safety regulations and standards, NFPA standards, building and equipment safety and risk management.

The HSO has numerous responsibilities, as defined in NFPA 1500. A few are listed here: • Identify and cause correction of health and safety hazards; • Develop actions to correct non-imminent hazards through the administrative process; • Report all incidents to the Chief or the Chiefs designee; • Maintain knowledge of NFPA 1500; • Knowledge of occupational health and safety hazards and the role of these hazards in diseases, illness and injuries as related to emergency and non-emergency operations; • Maintain knowledge of current health maintenance and physical fitness; • Maintain knowledge of live fire training procedures; • Develop a risk management plan; • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures complying with applicable laws, regulations, etc.; • Training in safety procedures regarding fire department operations are provided to members; • Shall investigate all illness, injuries, exposures and fatalities.

Your fire department should have a formal written occupational safety and health policy that identifies specific goals and objectives for the prevention and elimination of accidents and occupational injuries, exposures to communicable diseases, illnesses and fatalities. It should state that, “the policy of the fire department is always to provide and to operate with the highest levels of safety and health for all members and at all functions.

The primary consideration is the prevention and reduction of accidents, injuries and illness and shall always be the goals of the fire department. This concern for safety applies to all members of the fire department and to any other persons involved in fire department activities.”

Fully Involved in Ronkonkoma

Around 0130 hours on September 4, 2018, the Ronkonkoma Fire Department was called for a house fire on Dorchester Drive with occupants trapped. Crews were met with a fully involved structure on arrival.

Hicksville Battles Heavy Fire The Hicksville Fire Department responded to a house fire on Cantiague Rock Road in Hicksville on September 4, 2018. Firefighters arrived to a heavy fire condition on the second floor. One firefighter sustained minor injuries battling the blaze. Mutual aid came from Westbury, Jericho, Syosset and Bethpage. The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes with overhaul taking an additional hour.

Heavy Damage to Hempstead School

by Lightning

The Hempstead Fire Department was called to a reported fire at the Prospect School on Peninsula Boulevard on the evening of August 7, 2018. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the roof and located the fire in the cockloft area and burning through the roof. Due to the high humidity, size of the building and difficulty accessing the fire, over a dozen fire departments were called to the scene and for standby. The fire was declared under control in about three hours with the school suffering substantial damage.

The cause of the fire was determined to have been a lightning strike.

Dog Saved in Westhampton Beach On August 19, 2018, shortly after hosting their annual open house at the Sunset Avenue firehouse, the volunteers of the Westhampton Beach Fire Department were called to a structure fire at a residence on Stewart Avenue in Westhampton in a kitchen of a two-story duplex. The homeowner told them that all the family members were out, but their small dog was probably upstairs.

The firefighters, under the command of Captain Tom Glover, quickly extinguished the fire in the kitchen. Other department members set up fans to remove the smoke that filled most of the building and a search of the upstairs bedrooms was instigated.

Probationary Firefighter Joe Madigan was able to locate the family’s dog hiding under a bed and reunited it with its family. Chief Billy Dalton was in command.

On August 31, 2018, the Island Park Fire Department responded for a fire on Industrial Place off Audubon Boulevard in an auto and truck salvage yard. The fire went to a second-alarm equivalency.

Island Park Engine 224 put two handlines in operation resulting in

a quick knockdown of the main body of fire. Firefighters briefly turned to a foam operation. Among the departments called for mutual aid were Long Beach, Oceanside, Point Lookout-Lido and Freeport.

Huntington Battles House Fire

The Huntington Fire Department responded to reports of heavy smoke in the area of St. Andrews Drive on August 17, 2018. Crews arrived to heavy smoke throughout the house, and heavy flames at the rear. Firefighters deployed three lines to extinguish the fire, which was brought under control within an hour. Huntington was assisted by Halesite, Huntington Manor, Cold Spring Harbor, Centerport, Greenlawn, Dix Hills and Melville at the scene, with

East Northport on standby. EMS crews from the Huntington Community First Aid Squad were also on scene, and one firefighter was transported to Huntington Hospital for heat exhaustion. Smoke Shows in Deer Park

Commack Carbon Monoxide Leak The Commack Fire Department and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to reports of an alarm and people feeling ill at Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza restaurant on Jericho Turnpike on August 15, 2018. The restaurant was evacuated and crews found high levels of carbon monoxide present in the restaurant and the adjoining Chocolate Works store.

One employee of the restaurant was transported by Commack Ambulance to St. Catherine’s Hospital.

Seven other patients were evaluated by Commack EMS personnel at the scene. Units were under the command of Third Assistant Chief John Barry.

Car into Building

On the evening of May 20, 2018, the Mineola Fire Department responded to a multi-vehicle accident on Jericho Turnpike east of Willis Avenue. One of the vehicles involved in the accident crashed into a photography/videography studio on the north side of Jericho Turnpike trapping the driver of the Lexus sedan. First responders had to breach a wall to access the driver who was not seriously injured. Mineola Heavy Rescue 1610 removed the vehicle from the building which sustained significant damage. Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Nassau County Police ESU were also on scene.

Two Injured in Melville Crash

The Melville Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle MVA involving a car and an overturned SUV on Baylis Road near the entrance to the Huntington Quadrangle on June 22, 2018. There’s Always a First Time The Smithtown Fire Department rescued a few cats from trees, but never a kitten stuck in the suspension of a car. Our brave heroes responded to Hollywood Drive and Rescue 9 and Engine 5, instead of climbing a ladder, got on their hands and knees to extract the little guy from his hiding place. Melville Heavy Rescue on the LIE

The Melville Fire Department responded to an MVA heavy rescue on the Long Island Expressway eastbound lanes between exits 48 and 49 on June 14, 2018. The Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to an MVA after an SUV crashed and overturned on June 23, 2018, at Wolf Hill Road near Crandon Street. The Medford Fire Department was activated for a reported overturn on Forte Avenue. On arrival, the chief encountered a van on its side with a person heavily pinned between the van and the road.

On July 23, 2018, the Ronkonkoma Fire Department was activated for an MVA with possible heavy rescue on Union Avenue. Overturn in Smithtown

7 Injured in Hauppauge 4-Car MVA

The Smithtown Fire Department and Suffolk Police responded to an accident at the intersection of Townline Road and North Hoffman Lane in Hauppauge on July 19, 2018. Car Hits Tree in Selden

The Roosevelt Fire Department operated on the scene of a car versus pole MVA across from their headquarters on West Centennial Avenue on the afternoon of July 12, 2018. There were no aided as the vehicle which took down the pole, wires and transformer came off the back of a tow truck. A precautionary handline was stretched off Roosevelt 732. Nassau County Hazmat was notified and responded along with PSEG. The accident resulted in several homes in the area losing power.

Just as Soon as We Shut Off the Power Just after midnight on August 3, 2018, the Hicksville Fire Department was alerted for wires and poles down on an occupied car on South Broadway.

Arriving units found a truck had taken down two utility poles and a driver was trapped in his car with wires all around it. Crews kept the driver calm until the power could be shut off. DWI MVA in Holbrook In the early hours of September 1, 2018, the Holbrook Fire Department was activated for an MVA with possible entrapment at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Highway and Grundy Avenue. Garden City MVA

Two people were injured after a two-vehicle collision on New Hyde Park Road near Fairmount Boulevard in Garden City on August 27, 2018. The impact of the crash caused an SUV to roll onto its side, trapping the driver. Garden City firefighters used hydraulic tools to remove the roof of the SUV and gain access to the injured driver. Nassau County Police medics were on the scene to transport the injured to area hospitals.

Dix Hills Heavy Rescue

The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to an MVA heavy rescue vehicle. The woman was transported to Southside Hospital by Dix on the Northern State Parkway westbound near the Dix Hills Road Hills Rescue Squad with non-life-threatening injuries. Units were overpass on September 1, 2018. Crews extricated the driver of a car under the command of Second Assistant Chief Joe Williamson.

Car Careens Through Hofstra Fence

On August 21, 2018, an SUV plowed through a wrought iron fence and struck a Hofstra University building on Fulton Avenue near Duncan Road. The building housed an Early Learning Center and at least four young children were shaken up as a result of the crash.

Multiple emergency agencies were on the scene including Hempstead Fire and Police, Hempstead Building Department, and Nassau County ESU and EMS medics.

Melville’s Jason Bernfield Honored

Legislators Susan A. Berland and Tom Donnelly presented a proclamation to Melville Assistant Fire Chief Jason Bernfeld for saving the life of a man after a car accident on the Northern State Parkway just before Round Swamp Road. Jason was on his way to work on March 12, 2018, when he happened upon the accident scene. Without any regard for himself, Jason went to help a man whose car was upside down. Jason was able to pull the man out just before the car burst into flames. “I am extremely proud to honor the incredible bravery that Jason Bernfeld displayed,” stated Legislator Berland. “I have known Jason for some time and I can confidently say that the courage and willingness to help a stranger that he showed at this accident is who he is at his core.”

“As an instructor at the Suffolk County Fire Training School who helped train Chief Jason Bernfeld, I saw his dedication, passion and commitment to serving the community from the very beginning of his firefighting career,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I am not at all surprised by his continued displays of bravery every single day. In a difficult world, Chief Bernfeld is a shining example of all that is good and right.”

Clam Eating Contest Benefits Museum

On August 19, 2018, Peter’s Clam Bar of Island Park hosted its 5th Annual Clam Eating Contest. In years past the event benefitted firehouses that were impacted by Hurricane Sandy; however, this year’s funds went towards the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center in Garden City. Pete Adams of the Island Park Fire Department finished in first place eating a total of 164 clams in six minutes.

Charlie Hendry (Hempstead Fire Department) and Augie DeRiggi (North Lindenhurst) finished in second and third place. Among the other fire departments represented were: Stewart Manor, Bellerose, Rockville Centre, Islip, Lynbrook, Point Lookout-Lido, and Franklin Square and Munson.

Adapting to Conditions in East Hampton On August 12, 2018, members of the East Hampton Fire Department held their annual picnic ‌ indoors! Due to possible thunderstorms, it was decided to hold the picnic at the EHFD headquarters on Cedar Street, instead of at the beach, where it has been traditionally held. No matter: a pool was set up inside the apparatus floor, along with corn-hole and Jenga contests, facepainting (ex-Chief Thomas Bock was a sport), a dunk-tank (where EHFD Chief Gerry Turza, Jr., was a sport!) and an ice cream truck to make the day complete. In spite of the last-minute change in locale, a great time was had by all!

The 2018 Nassau County Sixth Battalion parade was hosted by the East Meadow Fire Department on August 25, 2018. Hagerman’s Gonnelly Honored

The Hagerman Fire District and Fire Department held a dedication ceremony in honor of departed ex-Chief Joseph E. Gonnelly. Hagerman was honored to have Joseph’s wife and children christen the new boat before it was entered into service.

Gonnelly was an integral part of the Hagerman Water and Dive rescue operations, helping to build the department’s operations into an eight-pilot and 12-diver team.

Thanks to Dockside 500 Marina for hosting the ceremony, as well as district manager Barbara Allen for organizing the event. Thanks to our elected officials, the Patchogue Fire Department for the wetdown and most of all thank you to the Gonnelly family.

Hagerman Teams Recognized for 2018 Wins

Councilman Michael Loguercio, Jr., recognized two drill teams from the Hagerman Fire Department at the September 27, 2018, Brookhaven Town Board meeting. One was the Hagerman Fire Department’s Junior Drill Team who are the NYS Junior Drill Team Tournament Champions for 2018 as well as the Total Point Champions for the years 2017 and 2018. The Hagerman Fire Department hosted the Junior State

Tournament on Sunday July 29, 2018, in which 15 teams participated in 10 events. Hagerman’s Junior Team took First Place and are now State Champs for the second year in a row.

Also recognized was the Hagerman Fire Department’s Gamblers Drill Team who are the Brookhaven Town Drill Team Champions for 2018.

Terry Farrell Fund Trains the Future On August 25, 2018, the Terry Farrell Fund held an all-day, hands-on training seminar for Junior Firefighters from Nassau and Suffolk County. After a brief welcome by Brian Farrell, the president of the Terry Farrell Fund, the students participated in events that showed them what it was like to be a firefighter. Thank you to the instructors from the Suffolk County Fire Academy, many who worked with Terry Farrell at FDNY Rescue 4, for donating their time to work with the foundation training our future firefighters. The 1918 Submarine Fire

By Paul Hashagen One of the most difficult and dangerous fire operations in the history of Rescue Company 1 occurred on Saturday, October 5, 1918. For security reasons, the Navy Department didn’t make the story public until years later.

With the nation engaged in World War I, the New York newspapers were filled with dispatches from the Western Front. That Saturday morning’s edition also carried stories about the shell loading plant in New Jersey the day before. The war, it seemed, was getting closer to home.

The fire in Jersey was still burning, and everyone was waiting for a reported 40,000 tons of TNT to explode at any minute. New York firemen were half-expecting to cross the river and work at the “Big One.” The men of Rescue 1 would soon be crossing a river, but it would be the East River, as they responded to a job that might reach similarly devastating proportions.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard was in full swing, its piers crowded with ships of all types, most of them laden with ammunition. At Pier 12, one of the largest types of submarines was preparing to put out to sea; onboard was its full complement of ordinance. Together with nearby powder magazines and the other ships, there was enough munitions to wreck the Williamsburg Bridge and a portion of Brooklyn — not to mention what a chain reaction would do to the nation’s war fleet.

Things were about to go wrong.

Submarine O-5, hull number SS-66, was built at the Fore River Ship Building Company, of Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1916 and 1917 and was commissioned on June 8, 1918, with Lt. Commander George A. Trever as its skipper.

Trever had attended the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

Although O-class boats were state-of-the-art at the time, duty onboard submarines in this era was more an ordeal than an adventure. The cramped quarters and damp, close air made operations most unpleasant. The men nicknamed these subs “pig boats.” Not only were they uncomfortable, they carried more dangers in their own hulls than they faced from the hostile sea.

The first of these potential problems was

chlorine gas, “the green death.” This was generated when water mixed with the sulfuric acid in the batteries. The other major demon on board was the possible generation of hydrogen gas.

This gas was formed under certain conditions when the batteries were charging or discharging. A four-percent mixture of hydrogen in the atmosphere creates a powerful explosive.

The submarine had been operating prior to its New York arrival, patrolling along the Atlantic Coast from Cape Cod to Key West. It came to the Brooklyn Navy Yard to be readied for an Atlantic crossing with its division. As preparations before the trip were under way, somehow the ventilator to the battery room was accidently left closed. While trying the port engines on battery power, LCdr. Trever became aware of the build-up of hydrogen gas and, along with Lt. W.J. Sharkey, attempted to avert the pending disaster.

Suddenly, the aft battery exploded. Trever, seriously injured, was forced from the area by the ensuing fire. Sharkey was missing and feared dead in the aft battery compartment area.

The crew, still under Trever’s command, made valiant efforts to control the flames.

Extreme heat was building up and the batteries began generating chlorine gas. Unable to cope with the deteriorating conditions, the sailors were forced to withdraw.

Realizing the need for assistance, Navy Yard officials called the New York City Fire Department. First-due units were confronted with a situation beyond their capabilities.

Arriving on the scene, Deputy Chief Patrick Maher, of Division 11, sized up the situation and special-called Rescue Company 1.

Lt. Francis Blessing and the members on duty — Firemen Thomas Kilbride, John Donohue, John Ryan, Frank Clark, James Smith and John Mayr — responded from their quarters on Great Jones Street in Manhattan. The rescue rig at the time was a 1914 Cadillac touring car, and Lt. Blessing was at the wheel.

Meanwhile, D.C. Maher was discussing tactics and the chain-of-command with the naval officers. Since the fire department would be doing the firefighting, Maher stated he would be in charge. The naval officers reluctantly agreed.

When Rescue arrived, the Chief advised Lt. Blessing of the situation. The fire was raging in the battery and dynamo rooms and was venting through the front hatch, exposing a nearby powder magazine. There were also 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board and, to compound matters, Lt. Sharkey and two sailors were missing below decks.

Blessing and two volunteers from Rescue, Firemen Kilbride and Donohue, donned Draeger smoke helmets. They started down the rear hatch ladder into the sub, stretching a line as they went.

Two naval officers, also wearing Draeger helmets, accompanied them, apparently to guide them through the unfamiliar sub.

Meanwhile, on the pier, the other members of Rescue 1 began the dangerous task of unloading the powder magazine.

The men inside the sub were confronted by the advancing fire, dense smoke, deadly gases, lack of ventilation, and the constant threat of another explosion. Lt. Blessing led them towards the fire area. They located two sailors overcome and removed them to safety, then continued searching where they could as they stretched the line. The men worked for hours under extreme conditions, extinguishing fire and unloading ammunition.

Continuing the search, Fireman Kilbride found Lt. Sharkey, dead, in the after battery compartment. LCdr. Trever and Engineer 2nd Class J. L. Still were taken to the Naval Hospital.

Trever would succumb to his injuries nine days later.

By courage and efficiency the members of Rescue Company 1 averted what probably would have been the worst naval disaster ever to take place in the New York area. Navy officials had the highest praise for the firefighters and the job they did, fully aware of the hazards they faced.

For their heroic actions, the Fire Department awarded Class 1 Certificates of Merit to Lt. Blessing and Firemen Kilbride and Donohue.

Class 2 awards were given to Firemen Mayr, Clark and Smith. (While in the Navy during the Boxer Rebellion, Smith had been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery under fire.)

On Medal Day, June 12, 1919, Mayor Hyland pinned Department Medals on Firemen Kilbride and Donohue and Lt. Blessing. In addition, Lt. Blessing was awarded the department’s oldest and most prestigious award, the James Gordon Bennett Medal. Also honored that day was Lt. Benjamin Parker of Rescue 1 for his rescue of a brother firefighter caught in a collapse at a third alarm fire at 345 West 46th Street. (Parker received the first Thomas A. Kenny Medal, which replaced the Strong Medal.)

For their heroism and devotion to duty at the cost of their own lives, Lt. Commander Trever and Lt. Sharkey were each posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.

This does not end the saga of the O-5. The submarine was refitted and departed Newport on November 3, 1918, with a 20-sub contingent bound for European waters; however, hostilities ceased before the vessels reached the Azores.

The First Lime Green/Yellow Rig in Nassau County

There had been white trucks in Nassau but the first Lime Green/Yellow rig to enter service was Freeport’s 1972 Ward LaFrance Hi Ranger 85-foot snorkel. The rig was a centerfold in the now-defunct Life Magazine. The truck saw a lot of fires during its days.

Another Win for Centerport It was quite a week for the Centerport Fire Department.

After winning the Huntington Town Fireman’s Softball League Championship last week, Centerport’s bravest went on to capture the top trophies at the Greenlawn Fire Department Parade on August 30, 2018.

Centerport was awarded trophies by the Greenlawn chiefs for the Best Overall Department, First Place Best Appearing Department, First Place Most Members in Line (over 30) and Best Junior Department. This was the second year in a row that Centerport received the Best Overall Department trophy.

No ‘Day at the Beach’ at the Air Show The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach has become one of the largest air shows in the United States and it is an honor and a privilege for the Wantagh Fire Department to provide Fire/EMS and Rescue services year after year. Wantagh is the lead agency responsible for this task, assisted by many neighboring departments. Members sacrifice long hours to ensure the safety of the hundreds of thousands of spectators who attend each year, as well as maintain adequate coverage for the residents of the Wantagh Fire District during the event.

Leadership personnel from the WFD are involved throughout the year in planning and coordinating with many local, state and federal agencies.

Although this year’s event was shortened to just one day due to rain, responders were ready, as always, to answer the call. On Saturday, with larger than normal crowds due to inclement weather forecasted for Sunday, there were 40 assorted units staffed by 173 personnel. Comparable numbers were ready to go on Sunday but were turned back once the show was cancelled. While this might sound like a lot of equipment and personnel to some, consider how difficult it would be to get through the heavy traffic in the event of an emergency.

That is why it is necessary to stage resources at various locations throughout Jones Beach State Park for the duration of the event.

During the Air Show there were 11 incidents that required Fire/EMS response and six people were transported to area hospitals.

Fortunately, none of the incidents were serious. Back home, in the confines of the Wantagh Fire District, there were five calls for assistance, which were easily handled by members not assigned to the beach. Although Sunday’s rainout gave everyone a bit of a break, members had to bring much equipment that was staged back to the mainland as well as prepare for the Memorial Day Parade on Monday.

The chiefs, officers and members would like to thank the many departments that willingly assist Wantagh each year at the show by providing additional equipment and personnel. It was very gratifying to hear many departments respond, “we’ll see you next year,” over their radios as units were being released from their assignment for the day.

Centerport Custom Car Show

The Centerport Fire Department’s Eagle Truck Company recently hosted their 23rd annual Antique and Custom Car Show at Centerport Beach. This year’s show brought nearly 200 cars, trucks and motorcycles, ranging from early classic antiques, hot rods, muscle cars, and of course fire apparatus.

Firefighters from many area departments came out to show support for Centerport, with Greenlawn taking the trophy for Best Appearing Fire Apparatus with their 1930 Hahn pumper.

Meyerson Named ABR EMT of the Year

Centerport Wins Huntington Softball Championship

Hannah Grace Meyerson was the recipient of the Chief Robert Erdman EMT of the Year Award for 2018. The award, named for the first chief and one of founders of the Atlantic Beach Rescue, is presented to the member of the Medical Branch of the Atlantic Beach Rescue who has demonstrated a commitment to both patient care and EMS development. In addition to her duties as an EMT, Hannah Grace worked with the Juniors Program. She will be attending Mount Holyoke College this fall majoring in neuroscience. Pendergast Fund in Action The Heather Pendergast Fund held its 10th Annual Golf Outing on July 10, 2018, followed by a dinner at the Woodside Club in Muttontown. Two Long Island fire department families who were assisted by the Pendergast Fund were in attendance.

Lindenhurst Firefighter Mike Mari and his wife Kathleen spoke at the dinner on how the fund helped them when their daughter Lindsay became ill. Sadly, Lindsay passed away in December 2017.

EDITORIAL CHANGES PREPARE FIREHOUSE FOR THE FUTURE

Firehouse is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Matthews to conference director and acting editor-in-chief of Firehouse, and the promotion of Janelle Foskett to editorial director of Firehouse Magazine and Firehouse.com.

“The positive response to these moves, both internally at Firehouse, and among our many speakers, contributors and instructors, has been incredible,” said Greg Toritto, vice president/group publisher, public safety, Endeavor Business Media. “Both Peter and Janelle possess the necessary tools and leadership skills to ensure Firehouse’s continued growth and success, and to accomplish its mission to best serve our audience, customers, and partners. The fire service has always been about teamwork, and we are excited to name two true team players to these important Firehouse posts.”

Matthews started with Firehouse in 1999 and has served in multiple leadership and management roles throughout his career, making him truly ‘homegrown’ to the Firehouse brand. He has served as the executive editor and editor-in-chief of Firehouse.com, leading a team responsible for Firehouse’s 365-day-a-year digital operation providing news and education to the fire service community. Matthews has also been responsible for Firehouse’s events portfolio, supporting conference development, association partnerships and working with exhibitors to help them with their product and public relations efforts. In addition to his roles at Firehouse, Matthews has worked as a photo editor and photographer at the New York Post.

Matthews was introduced to the fire service by his father, a 59year volunteer firefighter. He volunteered with fire departments in New York and Maryland, holding the rank of lieutenant, and served as photographer for the St. Paul (MN) Fire Department.

Foskett joined the Firehouse team as executive editor in 2015, running the print operations for Firehouse Magazine, including special projects and custom supplements, and working closely with the web team and conference group to build the Firehouse brand. Prior to joining the Firehouse team, Foskett worked in fire service publishing for nearly a decade, managing the print and web operations at FireRescue magazine. She has nearly 20 years of experience in publishing and communications, and has worked as a reporter, writer, communications and social media specialist, and editor.

Matthews and Foskett have been responsible for the day-to-day editorial operations of Firehouse’s publishing franchise for several years. They will continue to lead a team that truly understands that its responsibility to serve our readers, the industry, and our contributors, is first and foremost.

Matthews and Foskett will assume their new roles immediately. Timothy E. Sendelbach, who had served as Firehouse’s editor-in-chief and conference director, has resigned. Firehouse would like to thank Tim for his contributions as a member of the Firehouse team, and wish him luck in his future endeavors.

In addition to the leadership changes above, Firehouse has also announced the following appointments and promotions: Steven Shaw has been promoted to senior editor, Firehouse.

Steven will take on an expanded role focused on magazine production and special projects.

John Kosik has been named senior editor, Firehouse. In addition to his prior responsibilities as an associate editor, John will oversee the day-to-day operations for Firehouse.com.

Associate editor Ed Ballam’s role will expand to include additional digital and print assignments, as well as special projects.

FIRST RESPONDERS HELPING OTHER FIRST RESPONDERS “It all started with a thought during the waking hours” said Chief Steve Cohen of the Jericho Fire Department. “Volunteers spend a lot of time for free to give to the community. We make long-lasting relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters, but we do not do much to give back to ourselves or create opportunities to increase our personal incomes that are impacted by our volunteer commitments.”

That is until Chief Cohen’s creation of the not-for-profit entity he formed in September 2017, Business-Emergency Responders Network, Inc., or “BERN” for short.

BERN is a business networking group with a twist. All members are currently volunteer firefighter or EMS on Long Island and assist each other in creating business opportunities. The group began with three Jericho FD members, including Cohen, and now boasts some 30 members from fire departments in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The meetings currently take place the last Wednesday morning of each month at 0800 at Jericho Fire District Headquarters and last about one hour each. What occurs within that short time each month equates to a substantial financial windfall to those members who are actively involved. The group

includes a lawyer (Chief Cohen is a partner in the law firm of Franklin, Gringer & Cohen, P.C. in Garden City); a mortgage banker; a pest exterminator; a public adjustor; an insurance agent; a construction manager; a banker; an employee benefits provider, a chiropractor, a DJ/Entertainment business, and many others.

“Steve is a dynamo. He spends the meeting working with each of us to make connections that will enhance each of our bottom lines” states Ted Ketsoglou, who co-owns the historic Jericho Cider Mill and also owns a food industry design and build business. “It’s [networking] a continuous process that transcends the monthly meetings” says Cohen who notes that “each of the BERN members are always trying to think of ways to get business for one another or to make new contacts.” An updated member directory is provided to members for easy access on their desk tops and cell phones for ready reference. SHOW THE FAMILIES OF THE FALLEN THAT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET Register for 4th Annual National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters When a firefighter dies in the line of duty the entire fire service grieves and looks for a way to show the family that their loved one will not be forgotten.

On Sunday, October 28, you can make it happen.

Join members of FDNY and the public for the 4th Annual National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters at Belmont Park.

“It’s an honor to take part in the annual National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters because it not only supports our own FDNY members here at home, it also benefits the thousands of men and women in communities across our country who bravely risk their lives to save others each and every day,” said FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.

Participants will walk 2,200 steps of Belmont’s stadium, symbolizing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center and the ultimate sacrifice that 343 members of FDNY made on September 11, 2001.

The stair climb is also a symbol of hope by raising funds that support programs of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the FDNY’s Counseling Services Unit. Both

“Symbolically walking in the footsteps of the 343 heroes who gave their lives on September 11th is a moving experience, and I would encourage all who are able to take part,” said Kavanagh.

Participants will receive a comemorative event shirt and a name badge for the firefighter they are honoring. Gates open and on-site registration begins at 9:00 am.

This family-friendly event includes activities and entertainment for everyone at the After Party. In addition, the New York Racing Association will raffle two (2) Belmont Stakes Day reserved seats valued at $200 each.

Proceeds support FDNY Counseling Services Unit (CSU) and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF).

Ronkonkoma’s Nicholas Albert Gill

The Ronkonkoma Fire Department mourned the loss of firefighter Nicholas Gill who died on August 9, 2018, age 26.

He was a proud and active firefighter/ EMT with the Ronkonkoma Fire Department for five years. His love and devotion to service and fellow members of the department was second only to that for his family. He had the desire to be the best at what he did; the first one in and the last one out. Nick was always there to assist the sick and injured with compassion and respect. His goal to become a member of the FDNY was approaching with his recent candidacy for an EMT position.

May Nick continue to serve and watch over his brothers and sisters from above; rest forever in peace.

Obituary

Centerport Mourns the Loss of Deputy Chief Dr. Hector Battaglia The Centerport Fire Department mourned the loss of ex-Deputy Chief Medical Dr. Hector J. Battaglia, Jr., 89, who answered his last alarm on August 24, 2018.

After offering his assistance at a serious Centerport auto accident, Dr. Battaglia joined the department in 1972 and was appointed Deputy Chief Medical Officer. He served in that capacity until retiring as Life Member in 1994.

Dr. Battaglia’s ideas and vision started to upgrade the Centerport Rescue Squad training from Advanced First Aid to EMT. Working with the rescue officers at the time, he put together a NYS Certified EMT course using local doctors, nurses and volunteer instructors at no cost to the taxpayers. The state came and gave the final exam, and to his credit all members passed. Battaglia’s work helped spread the EMT standards to Huntington Township, and then throughout Suffolk County departments.

Dr. Battaglia proudly served our country in the US Navy during the Korean War from 1951-1955. He attended Medical School in Milan, Italy, during the late 1950s and played baseball for the Milan Senators.

Visitation and Firematic services were held at the Centerport Fire Department, with funeral services at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church. Interment with military honors followed at Long Island National Cemetery.

Dr. Battaglia was the loving husband of the late Judith, and father of Catherine Kenyon, Ann Marie Pittelli, Susan Reid and Janice Battaglia. He was the cherished grandfather of Kaitlin, Christine, Jack, Luke, Carmine, Caroline and Nina.
