2020: What is Your Vision?

When I hear someone say 2020, I think of my eyesight. Seriously, from an early age it was drilled into me that 2020 was a good thing and my eyes were perfect! Let’s check our vision and look into the year 2020. I give thought to what I would like to personally change to make 2020 a landmark year. Yes, all of us have the power to change to be the best that we can possibly be, especially as a first responder.

According to the US Fire Administration, fires are down by 6.2 percent. Unfortunately, deaths from the fires are up 9.6 percent since 2008. What can you do to make a difference in 2020?

Through your continued dedication to your community, help your fire department increase community awareness about preventing home fires.

Work with the news media to get fire prevention messages into news stories. I will ask again, does your department have a trained public information officer? Your department should have a positive working relationship with your local newspapers and community boards. Learn about the latest research on fire detection, suppression and notification systems and get this information to your community through your fire prevention program. Hopefully your program is an on-going

program rather than just a one-day event.

As the year comes to an end, I am saddened that we have lost another firefighter. On December 5, 2019, Chief Robert White, Jr., of the West Stockholm (NY) Fire Department answered his last alarm at a fire in Potsdam, New York.

Firefighter LODDs have steadily decreased since 2015. However, one emergency responder death is too many when it comes to a member of our emergency responder family. In 2018, we lost 44 volunteer firefighters, 33 career firefighters and five wildland firefighters. To date, 54 firefighters have been lost in the line of duty in 2019. What can we do to continue the downward trend in firefighter fatalities? First you must look at how responders are dying and ask yourself where can you make a difference to lessen the chances of emergency responder deaths.

The leading cause of fatalities of firefighters is heart attack (44 percent), followed by trauma (27 percent), motor vehicle collisions (20-25 percent) asphyxia and burns (20 percent). Reading these statistics, I realize many of us can lessen our chances of a fatality by realizing we may not be doing all we can to protect ourselves from danger.

Fire departments offer physical training to their

members. Are you taking advantage of this? Do you exercise on a regular basis? Does your exercise program include a good cardio workout?

How about your diet? Are you overweight? Let’s face it, wearing PPE (personal protective equipment) is taxing on the body. Responding to calls is taking lives. Hey, slow down! And finally, everyone must wear their gear at all calls! If we save the life of one responder by changing our thought process, we have made a difference.

In 2020, look to see your job more clearly, so that you can continue the trend of lowering firefighter fatalities. Happy New Year to all!

Flames Halted in Centereach

On November 30, 2019, the Centereach Fire Department was called out to a fire in a home on Piedmont Court with flames visible on the 3-4 corner of the structure. Upon arrival, firefighters stretched two

lines to quickly knock down the flames. Mutual aid came from Farmingville, Ronkonkoma and Selden.

November 25, 2019, the North Amityville Fire Company laid to rest Chief of Department Daryll T. Rollins who passed away suddenly on November 20, 2019. Chief Rollins was about to begin his second year as Chief of Department at the time of his passing.

After joining the department, Daryll rose through the ranks quickly as a fire officer and had numerous department accomplishments, such as Probationary Member of the Year, twice receiving the North Amityville Fire Company Firefighter of the Year, five times highest percentage for fire calls and five times highest percentage for rescue calls.

Chief Rollins is survived by his mother, daughter, three sisters, one brother, and significant other along with numerous nieces and nephews. Chief Rollins also volunteered his time and services to many organizations to improve the lives of the underprivileged. Many members spoke about the positive impact that Chief Rollins made on their lives and how he guided them the best he could. At his wake and Firematic services, over 800 firefighters came and paid their respects. He will be sorely missed by all those that knew him and served with him in the fire service.

Brush Fire Extends to House Early on November 18, 2019, the West Hempstead Fire Department was called to a home on Ivy Street for a brush fire near the house. Police reported the fire was extending to the residence. West Hempstead Assistant Chief Brohm was among the first to arrive and had firefighters stretch two handlines and quickly knock down the fire.

Among the departments called for mutual aid were Franklin Square and Munson, Lakeview, Hempstead and Elmont. The cause of the fire was under investigation and all fire units were under the command of Assistant Chief Brohm.

North Bellmore Kitchen Fire The North Bellmore Fire Department responded to a house fire on Dewey Avenue on the morning of November 17, 2019. Arriving units discovered a fire in the first-floor kitchen of a twostory split level. Lines were stretched and truck companies searched and vented. Commercial Fire in Glen Cove On November 16, 2019, the Glen Cove Fire Department was called to smoke from the building next to North Coast Subaru on Glen Street off Cove Street.

Firefighters were met with smoke showing from a large, two-story commercial building. Firefighters worked to get to the fire and extinguish the flames; however, their efforts were hindered by excessive contents throughout the building and strong winds. During the operation, firefighters turned to exterior operations due to deteriorating conditions in the building. Mutual aid came from Sea Cliff, Bayville, Glenwood, Syosset, Oyster Bay, Roslyn, East Norwich and Port Washington, among others. At least two firefighters were injured battling the blaze — neither seriously.

Syosset Compressor Fire On November 18, 2019, the Syosset Fire Department responded to the Nassau County golf course property on South Woods Road for a machine on fire.

Arriving units found a compressor on fire close to a building. The fire was quickly extinguished before it could extend. No injuries were reported.

Chimney Fire in Levittown On November 16, 2019, at 2005, the Levittown Fire Department received a call for a chimney fire at a Loring Road home. Arriving units found and extinguished the fire and crews set up the ladder truck to gain access to the chimney. Crews used a chain to clear the chimney of anything built up inside, as crews inside the home extinguished any additional fire. No injuries were reported.

Bethpage Responds to Shed Fire On November 22, 2019, Bethpage crews responded to a fire on Hampshire Drive in Farmingdale. Car 4 reported an involved shed with exposure problems. Upon entering the house it was discovered the fire had entered and was travelling throughout. Engines 44 and 5 took the first lines and knocked the fire down and worked their way through the house while Engine 77 operated a third line kicking the 4-side fire down and protecting the exposed house next door. Trucks opened up and conducted searches while several mutual aid companies provided assistance. One firefighter suffered a minor ankle injury. The residents were home but made it out safely from this fast-moving fire.

Bay Shore Commercial Fire The Bay Shore Fire Department was called to a building fire on Brook Street just after midnight on November 23, 2019. Engine 3-1-1 arrived to smoke coming from a commercial building. Chief Rockfeld arrived and took command while Assistant Chiefs Butler and Eklund handled the fire operations. Crews stretched multiple lines and went to the roof, exposing pockets of fire and venting the building. The fire was contained to one business and brought under control in about an hour. Mutual aid came from Islip, West Islip, East Islip, Islip Terrace and Brentwood, along with the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Ambulance Corps.

The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.

Sayville Home Gutted in Late Night Fire

Late on November 16, 2019, the Sayville Fire Department was activated for a structure fire on Old Broadway Avenue. Commanding units were met with heavy fire showing throughout the structure.

Mutual aid was brought in from West Sayville, Holbrook, Bohemia, Blue Point, Bayport and Sayville Community Ambulance. Crews worked for hours in frigid temperatures battling the stubborn blaze.

The fire completely gutted the home. No injuries were reported.

Command requested a fire marshal to the scene for investigation.

On November 26, 2019, the Miller Place Fire Department was called out to a fire on Imperial Drive. With assistance from Mt. Sinai, Rocky Point, Sound Beach and Coram, the fire was quickly brought under control.

Commack House Gutted

On November 29, 2019, the Commack Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Rensselaer Drive.

Upon arrival, commanding units were met with a fully engulfed structure.

Mutual aid was requested from Dix Hills and Kings Park. Crews battled the stubborn blaze for over an hour before it was placed under control. The fire completely gutted the home. No injuries were reported. Command requested a fire marshal to the scene for an investigation.

West Hempstead House Fire On November 18, 2019, just before 0030, the West Hempstead Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire against a house. Upon arrival, units found fire on the first and second floors of the house. Engine 763 quickly extinguished the fire, which required extensive overhaul.

10 Displaced in Great Neck Blaze

At least 10 people were displaced from their apartments after an afternoon fire at a two-story mixed-occupancy building on Middle Neck Road in Great Neck on December 7, 2019. The fire was located in a second-floor apartment bedroom and quickly burned through the roof. Mutual aid companies assisted at the scene.

Mutual Aid Covers Uniondale Blaze

At about 2340 on November 27, 2019, the Uniondale Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Woodbine Street.

Uniondale units were already responding to a working fire on Warren Street that had been received about five minutes prior.

Mutual aid units assigned to the first fire were diverted to the Woodbine Street fire. Hempstead Truck 1 advised of fire in a single-story detached garage fully involved that had extended to a boat on a trailer in front of it. Roosevelt Engine 733 arrived and stretched a line down the driveway. East Meadow Engine 611 arrived and stretched a precautionary line. The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes with only minor damage to the exterior of the house. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Fully Involved in Centereach

On December 4, 2019, the Centereach Fire Department was called to North Washington Avenue for a house on fire. Units were met with heavy smoke and flames from the single-story home. Multiple occupants were able to escape the fire, taking a small dog with them. For unknown reasons Suffolk Police took one of the men into custody and had him handcuffed on the ground as firefighters worked on extinguishing the blaze. The fire was brought under control with the help of mutual aid from Selden, Setauket, Farmingville, Ronkonkoma and Nesconset. The Suffolk County Arson Squad and Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshal’s office investigated the fire.

Holtsville Car Fire on the LIE

Recently, the Holtsville Fire Department was activated for a vehicle fire on the eastbound portion of the Long Island Expressway near exit 62. Upon arrival, commanding units were met with a fully engulfed work van off the side of the roadway. Engine 6 quickly knocked down the fire without further incident and no injuries were reported.

Kings Park Chimney Fire

The Kings Park Fire Department was alerted for a chimney fire on Oak Lane in Fort Salonga on November 30, 2019 at 2110. A fire was discovered in the ceiling on the second floor extending to the attic of the large frame home. Mutual aid companies came from Commack, Smithtown, East Northport and Greenlawn; Saint James covered. Units were on scene for over an hour. No injuries were reported and the Suffolk Police and Smithtown Fire Marshal were on scene investigating the cause which was not considered suspicious.

East Islip House Fire Snuffed

On November 29, 2019, the East Islip Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Simmons Drive. Command units were met with heavy fire showing from the rear of the home.

Mutual aid was requested from Great River, Islip and Islip Terrace. First-due crews made an aggressive attack on the fire knocking it down with no injuries reported. Command requested an Islip Town Fire Marshal to the scene for investigation.

Fast Moving Fire in Williston Park

A raging fire destroyed two Williston Park businesses early on December 8, 2019. Initial reports were for a vehicle fire on Hillside Avenue near Nassau Boulevard. The flames quickly spread to an adjacent building, setting off a major fire department response. Nearby neighbors hurried to notify residents to evacuate adjoining apartments. Flames and heavy black smoke could be seen for miles as firefighters battled to bring the blaze under control. Nassau County Fire Marshals were investigating.

Old Westbury Fire Goes to 5 Alarms

While the members of the Roslyn Highlands, Roslyn Rescue, and Westbury Fire Department were just sitting down to a PL Vulcan RIT class, the tones dropped for a house fire on Quail Road in Old Westbury. Two lines were put into operation very quickly and an aggressive interior attack commenced. Due to a large volume of fire on arrival, after about 25 minutes units were removed from the house and a defensive attack was started. The fire went to five alarms before being brought under control.

Quick Stop in Hempstead The Hempstead Fire Department responded to a house fire on Rutland Road on December 2, 2019. Companies encountered a fire on the first floor of a Cape Cod-style home which was promptly knocked down by the first handline.

Fast Work in Freeport On October 30, 2019, the Freeport Fire Department was dispatched for a house fire on Locust Avenue.

Freeport chiefs and Engines 211 and 216 quickly arrived, finding fire on the second floor and attic. Three lines were stretched to extinguish the fire.

Busy Night in Uniondale

On November 27, 2019, just after 2330, the Uniondale Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire on Warren Street.

Chief Skelly was first on scene. Brookside Engine 7522 began the initial FIRE attack on the first and second floors. Three lines were stretched and placed into operation. While units were operating at this fire, mutual aid units responded to another working fire on the other side of town.

Boarded Up House Goes

Westhampton Beach Chimney Fire

At 0027 on November 18, 2019, the West Hempstead Fire Department was toned out for a brush fire next to the house on Ivy Street. Chief Brohm reported a working house fire. First-due Engine 763 laid a four-inch supply line and three attack lines.

Mutual aid was called. The attack was hampered because the house was abandoned and boarded up.

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department was called out to a structure fire on Country Estates Road in Westhampton at approximately 1930 on November 6, 2019. The chiefs and the first-due engine discovered a chimney fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, but firefighters remained on scene for about an hour, knocking built up creosote out of the flu and extinguishing a few residual flames.

Bridgehampton Commercial Fire On November 29, 2019, the Bridgehampton Fire Department was called to Marder’s Nursery on Snake Hollow Road for a structure fire in one of the metal storage buildings at the rear of the property. Mutual aid was called from Sag Harbor and Southampton for one tanker each. The main body of fire was quickly knocked down, but overhaul took time as the storage building was filled with bundles of pine needles used for landscaping. Porch Fire in Plainview Stopped On October 23, 2019, the Plainview Fire Department received multiple calls for a house under construction on fire on Blanche Street off of South Oyster Bay Road. A fire on the exterior porch was found and extinguished with no extension into the home. Additional units came from Bethpage, Hicksville and Syosset.

Multiple Cars Destroyed at Syosset Blaze On November 13, 2019, the Syosset Fire Department received calls for a van fire on Ira Road. Engine 584 reported multiple cars on fire and stretched one line and got water on the wind-pushed fire. Arriving crews assisted with stretching additional lines. Four cars were destroyed and six others damaged after the smoke cleared.

4-Alarm Commercial Fire On the morning of November 22, 2019, the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department was dispatched to a building fire on Central Avenue off Maple Avenue. Firefighters were met with smoke showing from a single-story row of stores. After investigating, fire was found in the basement of multiple stores. The operation went on to reach a fourth alarm, bringing various mutual aid units to the scene and for standby. Several handlines were stretched and put into operation; however, firefighters’ efforts were hindered by heavy fire and a large amount of content and storage in the basement. The cause of the fire was under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of Lawrence-Cedarhurst Chief of Department McHugh.

Commack Car Fire

The Commack Fire Department, New York State Police and Commack Ambulance responded to a car fire on the westbound Northern State Parkway west of Veterans Memorial Highway in

WWII KIA Recovered, Buried A hearse bearing the remains of 2nd Lieutenant John F. McTigue, US Army Air Corps, passes beneath an Arch of Honor provided by Wantagh Fire Department Ladder 2 and Levittown Fire Department Ladder 6.

Lieutenant McTigue, 22, was co-piloting a B-17 bomber when his plane was shot down over Merseburg, Germany, on August 24, 1944. Five of the nine crew members were killed and four captured.

His unidentified remains were buried in Germany and later moved to France. Recent DNA proved his identification and he was returned home to his family. A wake was held at O’Shea’s Funeral Home in Levittown with a funeral mass with military honors held at St. Francis De Chantal Church in Wantagh on November 18, 2019.

He was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens.

Commercial Fire in Jericho

On the night of November 18, 2019, the Jericho Fire Department was called to Rallye BMW on Brush Hollow Road for an automatic alarm. Firefighters were met by occupants reporting a burning odor and found a smoke condition inside. After further investigation, a fire was found in a storage room. Firefighters stretched two handlines resulting in a quick knockdown. Among the departments called for mutual aid were Westbury, Plainview, Syosset and Hicksville. The cause of the fire was under investigation and all fire units were under the command of Jericho Chief of Department Kerry Ketsoglou.

EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND Smithtown Lines Down Spark Fires Recently, the Smithtown Fire Department was alerted for an electrical hazard at Terry Road and North Avenue. Upon arrival, units discovered a primary power line arcing against a tree branch with a small fire in the tree. PSEG was requested to the scene. Shortly after, the primary line burned through and ignited a fire on the ground as well as fire in one of the transformers. Upon the arrival of PSEG power to the area was shut off and the three fires were extinguished. Engine 4-2-2 and Rescue 42-9 operated under the command of Assistant Chief Duckham.

Youngster Injured in Car into Building An SUV car drove up a two-step curb into a Subway shop on Boundary Avenue in Farmingdale. A young girl was taken by ambulance to the local hospital.

1 Injured at Center Moriches MVA On November 20, 2019, a woman was seriously injured when, her SUV flipped over on the westbound Sunrise Highway, just west of Wading River Road. The Center Moriches Fire Department and SCPD responded. The woman suffered multiple fractures and was taken to a local hospital via fire ambulance. Center Moriches Chief of Department Ian Foley was in command of the scene.

S. Farmingdale MVA On November 19, 2019, the South Farmingdale Fire Department was alerted for an MVA at the intersection of Motor Avenue and Woodward Parkway. Units arrived to find two cars and negative entrapment. The crew of Truck 979 secured both vehicles. Both drivers were transported to an area hospital for injuries via Nassau County Police ambulances.

Entrapped at West Islip MVA The West Islip Fire Department and Suffolk Police responded to single-vehicle MVA at Udall Road and the westbound service road of Sunrise Highway about 0300 on November 16, 2019. First Assistant Chief Cooper and Third Assistant Chief Celeste advised that the driver was trapped after striking a concrete pillar under an overpass.

The crew from 3-17-3 and Engine 3-17-5 had the driver extricated quickly and he was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with serious injuries by Ambulance 3-17-18. The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Extrication at Bethpage MVA On November 19, 2019, at 2121, the Bethpage Fire Department and Nassau County Police responded to an MVA on Grumman Road West in Bethpage. An Amazon delivery van and a car collided trapping the driver inside the mangled car. Emergency crews removed both doors and the center post of the car to get the driver out.

Both drivers were transported to Nassau University Medical Center, one in serious condition.

7 Injured in Hicksville MVA A school bus and an SUV collided at the intersection of Jerusalem and Dante Avenues in Hicksville on November 12, 2019. Hicksville firefighters and EMS responded and found five special needs children and one adult on the bus injured and the driver of the SUV trapped. Firefighters removed the door of the SUV and got the driver out. All seven of the injured were transported to Nassau University Medical Center by Hicksville, Levittown and Nassau County Police ambulances.

On October 19, 2019, at 0044, the Farmingdale Fire Department was alerted for a car fire on Merritts Road at the LIRR crossing.

The Suffolk Police, Islip Terrace Fire Department, Brentwood Legion, Islip Exchange and Central Islip-Hauppauge ambulances responded to an MVA at the intersection of Islip and Locust Avenues in Central Islip on November 21, 2019. A car was broadsided by a mini school bus carrying kindergarten children which overturned. Several children were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Police were investigating the cause of the accident.

Next Time Try the ‘Down’ Position On November 13, 2019, the Hicksville Fire Department responded to an MVA on South Broadway by Lee Avenue. Arriving units found that a dumpster truck with its load extended had caught the power lines and snapped a utility pole dropping the wires on South Broadway and pulling services from buildings. Crews were able to secure the area after redirecting all of the cars and trucks that were caught in the traffic jam. No injuries were reported.

Not Exactly a Rapid Response On November 5, 2019, the Hicksville Fire Department was alerted for an MVA with overturn on East Old Country Road by New South Road. Crews found the accident in front of the PSEG headquarters on East Old Country Road with a pole down and live wires on the car and the driver still inside. Emergency personnel talked to the driver and told her to stay inside the car. A utility truck returning to the yard was flagged down after crews waited 20 minutes for PSEG to respond to the front of their building. The power was shut down and crews were able to remove the woman from her car and transport her to the hospital.

On November 25, 2019, the Deer Park Fire Department was busy responding to overturn MVAs. The first, at 0715 on Nicholls Road and Western Avenue, where a minivan rolled hitting a tree on a front lawn of a house. The person self-extricated and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital. The second overturn of a small SUV occurred at 1142 at the corner of Grand Boulevard and Carls Path, and had an entrapment. Deer Park firefighters popped the door and took the front windshield out and were able to extricate the two women. One woman was transported.

Car into Laundromat in Hempstead At least two people suffered minor injuries after a driver lost control of her vehicle and plowed through the storefront of a Hempstead laundromat on South Franklin Avenue around 0815 on September 25, 2019. The car smashed through a large glass window and came to a stop next to a row of washing machines and dryers. The crash caused a small gas leak that was quickly controlled by Hempstead firefighters.

Suffolk FRES in the News Between the last week of September and the first week of November Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) continued a tremendous county-wide effort to support open houses and community events where a strong message of preparedness, fire prevention and recruitment could be delivered.

FRES staff attended approximately 40 different events throughout the county. Suffolk County Fire Marshals and staff from the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management worked to assist the different fire departments and ambulance companies throughout the county by conducting safety demonstrations using extinguisher simulators, the All-Hazards training unit, accelerant detection K-9 demonstrations, and providing emergency and disaster preparedness information. All of this was done while promoting the value of our amazing Fire and EMS volunteers in Suffolk County. As one result of these efforts, Suffolk County FRES tracked more than 91 new recruits who reached out to express interest in joining their local fire or EMS agency.

When asked about this effort, Commissioner Jordan said, “FRES has and will continue to support the 136 fire and EMS agencies throughout Suffolk County by providing personnel and resources for events such as these. We are also very proud of the amazing and dedicated fire and EMS volunteers in Suffolk County and understand the importance of supporting the maintenance and growth of that volunteer system through recruitment efforts like these outreach events and programs like the grant funded SERVES Tuition Assistance program that remains available as a benefit to our volunteers.”

Bethpage’s Michael Mancini Honored for His Service

Michael A. Mancini contributed a total of 70 years to the fire service in Nassau County. In 2005, the department honored ex-Chief Mancini with the Nassau County Firematic Award for his dedicated service to the Bethpage Volunteer Fire Department. Recently, the meeting room at Bethpage Station 4 was named in honor of Mancini. Mancini passed away in June 2009.

He joined the Hempstead Fire Department in 1939 at age 21, and served with them for 12 years. On March 29, 1950, Mike joined the Bethpage Volunteer Fire Department and was assigned to Engine Company 2. He was a charter member and later Captain of Engine Company 4. Mike was active in the tournament teams of Hempstead such as the Yellow Hornets,

Bethpage Whippets and Firebugs.

In 1957, Mike became 2nd Assistant Chief, then served as 1st Assistant Chief from 1958 to 1959 and served as Chief of Department from 1959 to 1960. In 1961, Mike became Fire Commissioner with the Bethpage Fire District, a position he held for many years.

After 59 years of service in Bethpage, Mike remained active in the Fire Police Unit, still attended department and company meetings, was pastPresident of the Nassau County Fire Districts Association and was still active on the Long Island Fire Districts Legislative Committee.

Brookhaven Town Fire Marshals Train for High Water Incidents

On October 9, 2019, Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshals participated in a training course provided by the Suffolk County Fire Academy, which formalized training on the proper methods for conducting evacuations in high-water situations, like those encountered on the South Shore of the town during Super Storm Sandy.

The training included vehicle response to the incident, including its capabilities and limitations, as well as evacuee loading while using small Jon boats, Stoke’s stretchers with flotation and other equipment. Each fire marshal had the opportunity to don drysuits and utilize the equipment in the water. In September the fire marshals participated in a basic water rescue course which included an endurance swim test. The swim test was a requirement to participate in the October training course.

The Town of Brookhaven received a grant in 2018 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the build out of two highwater rescue vehicles. Delivery of the first vehicle was made in February of 2019 and replaced an aging unit. The second is scheduled for delivery in early 2020. Both units offer additional capabilities over the recently retired unit.

Similar to the fire marshals’ responsibility at a HazMat response in support of the local departments, these new response units will be available for response at the request of the incident commander. Currently the plan is to staff the units when a significant storm event is expected.

Members of the North Massapequa Fire Department were recently on hand to welcome home United States Air Force Airman Patrick Swayne, who is a proud resident of North Massapequa. “Airman Swayne missed the birth of his baby boy Declan while being deployed for six months in Iraq and our fire department members were honored to thank this brave veteran, along with his wife, Kiersten, for their sacrifices and selfless service,” said North Massapequa Fire Department Chief Joseph M. Pesale. Jr., himself an Army combat veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm. “The fire service has a long legacy of supporting our military and law-enforcement and we wanted to send a clear message to Airman Swayne that we are grateful for his commitment to defend this nation.” Those sentiments were echoed by North Massapequa Fire District Commissioner Ralph J. Raymond. “As Americans, we are proud to stand in support of the men and women of our military,” Commissioner Raymond said.

“Airman Swayne represents the best of our country and it was truly our honor to stand by his side and welcome him home.”

Hicksville Poster Contest Awards

On November 17, 2019, the Hicksville Fire Department held their annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest awards ceremony for which they received over 2000 posters from all of the schools in Hicksville. From the 2000 posters submitted, 47 were chosen and recognized at the awards ceremony. The Hicksville Fire Department starts off their fire prevention campaign with visits to all of the schools and then on December 1 with popcorn ball day and finishing off with their fire safety open house.

Freeport Christens New Truck On November 3, 2019, a ceremony was held at the quarters of Freeport Truck for their new Ferrara Tower Ladder 217. After several speakers and the blessing of the truck, Captain Ryan Fee and Freeport Village Mayor Kennedy christened the new apparatus with bottles of Champagne.

General contractor Stalco Construction and architect, site engineer, and construction manager L.K. McLean Associates (LKMA) have completed the new Mastic Beach Ambulance Company (MBAC) headquarters. The new facility is located at 343 Main Street (formerly Neighborhood Road) in Mastic Beach. “The two-story, 18,000-square foot new headquarters building houses five drive-through vehicle bays, instead of only three one-way bays in the previous facility, allowing for a more efficient emergency response and equipment maintenance operations. In addition, the drivethrough design of the bays further improves the efficiency and safety of operations by allowing the company to respond out of the building onto both Main Street and Diana Drive.

Two West Babylon Members Celebrate 50 Years Two West Babylon Fire Department members were honored at this year’s West Babylon Fire Department Installation Dinner for achieving 50 years of service. Vincent A. Bologna, Jr., and Jack Christ both joined the department in November 1969.

As a member of Santapogue Engine Company 3, Bologna held the offices of Secretary, Lieutenant, Captain and Company Trustee. He was elected as an Assistant Chief from 1984 through 1990 and later served as Chief of the Department from 1990 to 1992. In 1993, he was elected as a West Babylon Fire District Commissioner and served in that position until 2004.

As a member of Rainbow Hose Company 1, Jack Christ held the offices of Lieutenant and Captain.

The members, chiefs and Board of Fire Commissioners congratulate both on achieving this milestone anniversary.
