Effects of Technology on the Fire Service If I close my eyes, I can visualize our heroes of the past jumping off their rigs and running into burning buildings to search for possible occupants, locate the source of the fire, while stretching heavy 2-1/2 inch lines to knock down the fire. As a spectator, I could almost count the minutes it took for firefighters to get to a third-floor apartment. I would listen for the breaking glass as truck companies vented and I would watch for a short burst of water as firefighters neared the fire room, signaling me that the flames were about to be knocked out. As a seasoned spectator, I learned to move to a spot on the street so that I would not get hit with the spray of water as the advancing line was used to vent the room through the window. Despite seeing firefighters physically worn out and beat up from performing their duty, it was this memory that made me want to be a firefighter.

Today, the memory of the past has been modernized by the concern for firefighters health and safety. Yes, we are still putting the wet stuff on the red stuff, but we are doing it with the help of technology with the goal of protecting the firefighter, Look through Fire News and study our ads.

Look at the equipment that we have, which makes the art of firefighting a little safer for us.

Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) has become more comfortable to wear and offers better protection with high temperature masks and air level visibility. Our personal alert safety system (PASS alarm) is built into the pack and now has the capability to let Command search and locate you if your PASS alarm activates. Our gear is much more than pull-up boots and a Nomex coat. Bailout systems are an important part of our personal safety for interior firefighters.

How about the equipment we use?

Hydraulic extrication tools have gotten lighter to use. They are more powerful and have specially designed cutters to handle the exotic metals used in today’s cars. The new generation of tools utilize battery power. The new tools are faster and perform better than in the past.

New lighting equipment is like a scene out of Star Wars. Handlights used by responders cut through smoke like never before and offer greater visibility for the responder. Nighttime emergency scenes are well lit for our protection. Our gear includes highly reflective mate-

rial so that you are visible while you operate on scene.

I could go on and on and continue to talk about firefighter accountability systems, new communication systems, safer vehicles, responding aps and management systems.

Once again, I urge you to read the ads in Fire News to learn what new equipment is available to you.

New space age technology that is being utilized by today’s fire service is designed to improve firefighter effectiveness and firefighter safety. New technology is designed to let the responders of today do a dangerous job more efficiently with safety in mind. Be open to new ideas and new equipment. Today’s technology has your safety in mind. You can’t argue with that!

North Babylon KOs Tractor Fire On May 9, 2018, the North Babylon Fire Company responded to a fully involved lawn tractor at the North Babylon Woods Road School. North Babylon made a quick stop of the fire.

Lakeland House Fire In the morning hours of June 6, 2018, the Lakeland Fire Department was activated for a reported residential structure fire on Fir Grove Road. Upon arrival, commanding units were met with heavy smoke showing from the home. Mutual aid was requested from Ronkonkoma, Central Islip and Nesconset. The fire was quickly knocked down by first-due units without further incident. No injuries were reported. Command requested a fire marshal to the scene for investigation.

Apartments Burn in West Sayville

At 0843, on May 21, 2018, the West Sayville Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire at an apartment complex on Bevelander Place. Thankfully it was also the day of the department’s Glen Pettit Memorial Golf Outing, which meant many of the personnel who were participating in the outing were able to respond to the scene quickly. In addition to the West Sayville Fire Department, mutual aid came from the Sayville, Bohemia, and East Islip fire. Quick Knockdown

The Roosevelt Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on the morning of May 15, 2018. Arriving units found heavy fire showing from a second-floor window of the two-story split-level home on Park Avenue. Engine companies made a quick knockdown of the blaze.

East Rockaway House Fire On May 24, 2018, East Rockaway firefighters operated at the scene of a house fire on Harwich Road off Thixton Avenue. Those first to arrive were met with fire showing at the rear of a two-story private dwelling. Engine 404 put multiple handlines into operation.

Oceanside was designated the FAST and responded with Ladder 2442. Additional mutual aid was provided by Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Malverne and Lakeview. All occupants made it safely out of the home and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

North Amityville Housed Razed The North Amityville Fire Company was alerted for a house fire on County Line Road on May 14, 2018. Amityville Second Assistant Chief Budde was driving in the area and arrived first and notified Chief of Department Collins of a house nearly fully involved.

Engine 1-7-1 put a line into operation. Chief Collins requested mutual aid from Amityville. Engine 1-1-2 put a second line into operation as the crew of 1-1-15 laddered and searched. Due to the amount of clutter and the stairway and second floor being compromised, all members were pulled. Additional mutual aid was requested from East Farmingdale, Massapequa, Copiague and the Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corps rehab unit. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control and units spent several hours hitting hot spots. Units from Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst were called for relief. The house was demolished later that night. Three dogs were lost in the fire.

Westbury Scrapyard Fire On June 7, 2018, Westbury firefighters operated at a large fire in a scrap yard on the dead end of Hopper Street off Main Street.

There was a large volume of fire and many hazards present, including propane. Within minutes Westbury Ladder 962 was up and in operation with handlines also being used. They were soon joined

by Hicksville Ladder 931 and together the two were able to darken down the majority of the fire.

Additional mutual aid was called from Jericho, East Meadow, Carle Place, Garden City and Mineola among others. All units were under the command of Westbury Chief of Department Bartunek.

Basement Fire in East Northport The East Northport Fire Department responded to a house fire on Valesite Court in East Northport on June 3, 2018. Upon arrival a fire was discovered in the basement of a single-story ranch. Initial reports were that an occupant was trapped, which later proved negative. Mutual aid companies from Northport and Greenlawn also responded.

Bethpage Shed Fire The Bethpage Fire Department was called to a shed fire at the rear of a house on Manchester Drive on May 2, 2018. First Assistant Chief Isernia arrived to find a 10 x 10 shed fully involved and extending to a neighboring car port and two vehicles in their yard. Engine 9044 stretched one line to the fire, while the crew from Engine 9055 stretched a second line to protect the exposure. The crews from Ladder 3 and Ladder 4 overhauled the shed and pulled apart what hadn’t already collapsed. The fire was placed under control in about 20 minutes.

Hempstead House Fire ‌Take 4

Multiple fire departments operated at the scene of a fully involved, vacant house fire on Jerusalem Avenue in Hempstead on May 30, 2018. The house had been the site of at least three working fires over the past few years. Due to the significant fire load firefighters utilized an exterior operation. The fire grew so intense, it extended into exposure four (also a two-story private dwelling) where two handlines operated. Several handlines were placed into operation along with one tower ladder and one tele squirt. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Well Involved in Brentwood The Brentwood Fire Department responded to a house fire on Wurz Street on May 3, 2018. Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with a well involved fire throughout a two-story spiltlevel. Mutual aid was requested from Central Islip, Islip, Islip Terrace, Commack and Deer Park. Brentwood Legion Ambulance was on scene and transported two residents to Stony Brook University Hospital.

House Fire in Roosevelt The Roosevelt Fire Department, along with mutual aid departments, responded to a house fire on East Roosevelt Avenue near Park Avenue. Heavy smoke blanketed the 1-1/2 story home with flames showing from the roof. The blaze was brought under control within an hour. Nassau County Fire Marshals investigated the cause.

Good Stop in Great Neck The Great Neck Fire Department battled a working fire in a private dwelling on Station Road on June 5, 2018. Units found a heavy volume of fire in the rear of a two-story structure on arrival and quickly put handlines in operation. Mutual aid companies also responded to the scene.

Mastic House Fire In the early hours of May 25, 2018, the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a reported residential structure fire on Lockwood Drive. Commanding units were met with visible fire from the side of the home. Mutual aid was requested from Brookhaven and Mastic Beach. No injuries were reported and command requested a fire marshal to the scene for investigation.

Quick Work in Port Washington On May 9, 2018, the Port Washington Fire Department responded to a fire in an apartment building on Boxerwood Road. Upon arrival, heavy fire was presenting from the second floor of the building. Crews quickly made entry into the apartment, knocking down fire in a wall air conditioning unit with slight extension to the apartment proper.

The fire was contained to the one room and quickly placed under control.

Fire in Truck ‌on a Truck On May 16, 2018, the Plainview Fire Department responded to a report of a car fire on a tow truck on the Long Island Expressway at Sunnyside Boulevard. Engine 9511 extinguished an engine compartment fire on a box truck being towed.

Good Stop in Brentwood On the afternoon of April 30, 2018, the Brentwood Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Hilltop Drive. First to arrived was Chief of Department Derbyshire who observed fire showing from a garage, which was converted to a living space in a one-story home. Crews stretched and operated two lines while the crew from Ladder 3-2-8 laddered, vented and searched. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes with the fire contained to the garage. Mutual aid came from Islip, Central and East Brentwood.

Getting a Safety Culture in the Fire Service As a Safety Officer, creating a safety culture in your department takes time and effort, and can be a multi-year process. A series of continuous steps toward process improvement must be taken to create a safety culture. The committment of firefighters, chiefs and commissioners are hallmarks of a true safety culture where safety is an integral part of daily operations.

Another problem that hampers improvements to fire department safety is that people make errors that can lead to accidents.

Accidents lead to deaths. The standard solution is to blame the people involved. If we find out who made the errors and punish them, we solve the problem, right? Wrong. The problem is seldom the fault of an individual; it is the fault of the system. Change the people without changing the system and the problems will continue.

“To create a culture of safety in your fire department there must be buy-in on all levels.

People must commit to safety programs and practices.”

You, the SO, must set up a program with the chief’s approval.

The chief must be on board and make all recommendations to commissioners or the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

Though the answers seem simple, their importance goes beyond the surface. The key word here is “culture.” It is not just about training firefighters or having firefighters listen to you. It is about changing their very mindset. A safe culture inspires firefighters to be mindful of “trivial” details such as always wearing proper PPE without having to be told, always submitting their accountability tag when arriving on scene or driving at safe speeds and obeying response laws. A culture where safety permeates every aspect of firefighting is one that will see fewer accidents.

To create a culture of safety in your department there must be buy-in on all levels. People must commit to safety programs and practices. Obtaining a commitment of this nature is certainly a big task! The OSHA website (www.osha.gov) has many resourses available if you are just starting to focus your fire department mindset on safety. Do not let the sheer number of resources scare you. Do not rush it. Things will happen at a very slow pace, but change will happen. Don’t give up.

Where do you start? Learn many of the things an SO must know. Attend classes, meetings and read the NFPAs and the many books on the subject. Just saying you are a Safety Officer will not do it. Garage Fire in Melville On May 6, 2018, the Melville Fire Department responded to a garage fire on Goldfield Road. The fire was contained when a water pipe burst above the fire. Crews checked for extension and extinguished the remaining hot spots.

Vacant Home Goes in Coram On May 6, 2018, the Coram Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire on Beech Avenue. Commanding units were met with a fully engulfed vacant home. Command requested mutual aid from Selden, Middle Island, Yaphank and Miller Place. The stubborn fire took nearly 90 minutes to bring under control. No injuries were reported. Command requested a fire marshal to the scene for investigation.

Syosset Club Fire The Syosset Fire Department was called to a building fire at the North Ritz Club on Jericho Turnpike about 0430 on May 20, 2018. First arriving units found fire showing from the exterior of the building in the roof area on the exposure 1-2 corner. Engine 585 and its crew and other arriving engine crews stretched three lines. Ladder 582 set up in front of the building and its crew and mutual aid crews used multiple saws to cut open sections of the roof and facade to expose the fire. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control and keep it contained to the roof area. Mutual aid was provided to the scene and for standby from Plainview, Jericho, Westbury, Hicksville, Oyster Bay, East Norwich and Levittown. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Fatality in Hempstead Fire A 66-year-old female resident of a Hempstead apartment house was killed May 26, 2018, when a fire broke out in the kitchen of her Elk Street complex. Firefighters faced a heavy smoke condition in the three-story building on arrival but were able to locate and remove the victim from the second-floor apartment. The occupant was transported to Nassau University Medical Center by North Shore Ambulance but succumbed to her injuries.

Brush Fire in Hauppauge

The Smithtown Fire Department responded to a large area of brush requested to the scene from Kings Park, Nissequogue and on fire inside Blydenburgh Park off Brooksite Avenue. on May 3, Nesconset. It took over two hours to completely extinguish the fire.

Ronkonkoma Fire

On May 14, 2018, the Ronkonkoma Fire Department was activated for a commercial structure fire at the Meineke on Portion Road.

The crew of first-due Engine 10 stretched a dry line and forced entry. Upon further investigation the smoke was reported to be coming from an oil burner malfunction.

East Farmingdale Fire

On May 13, 2018, the East Farmingdale Fire Company was alerted for a residential structure fire on Monroe Street. Commanding units were met with an active fire in a room on the second floor.

Mutual aid was requested from Farmingdale and South Farmingdale. The fire was quickly knocked down by first-due units without further incident. No injuries were reported.

Flames Visible in Hauppauge

The Hauppauge Fire Department responded to a house fire on Swallow Lane in Hauppauge on May 6, 2018 at 0202. Upon arrival, flames were visible from the front of the home near the garage. Mutual aid companies from Commack, Smithtown, along with Central Islip Hauppauge Ambulance, responded. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and the occupants were able to safely evacuate. Suffolk Police and the Smithtown Town Fire Marshal were investigating the cause.

EMS ACROSS THE ISLAND

Middle Island EMS Responds to Shooting

At the end of March, authorities were notified of a shooting victim in a house on Middle Island Boulevard. The Middle Island Fire Department and Suffolk Police responded and found a man in a residence there who had been shot in the leg. The victim was stabilized by medics and transported via fire department ambulance to an LZ at West Middle Island Elementary School from where he was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital. Police were reportedly searching the area for two suspects who fled the shooting scene in a car.

Pilot Killed in Plane Crash in Melville The Melville Fire Department responded to reports of a plane crash on Northcote Drive on May 30, 2018. Upon arrival, firefighters found a small single-engine plane crashed and engulfed in flames at the edge of the road in a wooded area. Melville dispatched three engines, a quint ladder, tactical support unit, three ambulances, paramedic responder and fire police. Assisting were a crash truck from Republic Airport, an engine from East Farmingdale, and

ambulance from Plainview. Personnel were under the command of Chief Chris Nolan and Assistant Chiefs David Kaplan and Jason Bernfeld. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes by Melville and Republic Airport firefighters. The pilot of the World War II-era GEICO Skytypers plane was pronounced dead at the scene.

1 Injured in Medford MVA The Medford Fire Department responded to an MVA on the Long Island Expressway east of North Ocean Avenue on May 23, 2018. Medford Ambulance transported one person to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Fatal MVA in Yaphank On May 2, 2018 a woman was killed when the car she was in flipped over on PatchogueYaphank Road, just north of Long Island Avenue. Car into Building in Mineola A woman lost control of her vehicle after an accident on Jericho Turnpike in Mineola on the evening of May 20, 2018. The sedan plowed through the front entrance of the Fade to Black Video/Photography office on Jericho Turnpike near Willis Avenue. The driver was trapped in her car by debris until Mineola firefighters and EMS personnel could free her. The owner of the office was inside at the time of the crash but was uninjured.

Smithtown Overturn The Suffolk Police and Nesconset Fire Department responded to an accident at the Windcrest Galleria development on Town Commons Drive and Paddington Circle in Smithtown on May 20, 2018. Upon arrival of first responders, an SUV was found on its side with two occupants inside. Crews were able to remove the two occupants and they were treated for minor injuries.

Fatality at Ridge Multi-Vehicle MVA A mini-van, pick-up truck, and a motorcycle were involved in a crash on the Long Island Expressway eastbound recently. The Ridge Fire Department and Suffolk Police responded. There were numerous injured at the scene, some reportedly ejected from their vehicles. At least two people were airlifted from the scene to Stony Brook University Hospital. There was one reported fatality at the time of this writing.

A bus driver was injured and three children shaken up after a twovehicle collision on Cornwell Avenue near Horton Street in Malverne on June 6, 2018. The impact of the accident sent the school bus careening into a tree. Malverne firefighters along with Village Police and Northwell Ambulances responded.

On May 10, 2018, the Ronkonkoma Fire Department was activated for an MVA on Main Street. Commanding units were met with a two-vehicle crash. The crew of Rescue 8 secured both vehicles.

Oceanside 2-Car MVA On June 7, 2018, the Oceanside Fire Department operated at the scene of an MVA with overturn on Poplar Street off Freeman Avenue. There were two vehicles involved. All injuries were minor.

Melville Heavy Rescue The Melville Fire Department responded to a MVA heavy rescue on Old Country Road near Mount Misery Road on May 30, 2018.

Under the command of Chief Chris Nolan, Melville crews used struts to stabilize the vehicle, and tools to remove one of the victims.

The two-car crash injured the drivers of both vehicles. Both were transported to the Nassau University Medical Center.

Patchogue Drone Update

By Rick Skelaney, Chief Drone Pilot, PFD In the April 2017 edition of Long Island Fire News the Patchogue Fire Department’s drone additions to their firefighting and SAR environments were revealed in an article by the department’s Chief Drone Pilot Rick Skelaney.

After a year of trial and error testing, sorting out procedures, responding on actual calls and handling aerial recon missions for preplanning Skelaney, with the permission of his chiefs, found time to develop what is possibly the first UAS (unmanned aerial system) Response Unit in Suffolk. Using private funds, Skelaney searched for the vehicle that would serve the requirements of a UAS responder.

Drones are fickle; they will fail to launch if their batteries are too cold, or the drone’s electronics are not at proper operating temperature.

Dealing with these problems forced Skelaney and Chief Tierney, who keeps the department drone in his response vehicle, to house their drones indoors during the winter. Responses to alarms during these time periods caused delays for Skelaney due to the amount of equipment that had to be brought back outdoors and placed in his POV. The remedy was simple: purchase and design a dedicated and heated responder where the drones can sit all year round, with charging systems and rapid deployment capabilities and equipment.

Started in February 2018, the responder evolved from idea into reality, making its debut in May 2018. Insulated and heated, the vehicle keeps the drones at operating temperatures regardless of weather.

Internal power from an AC inverter gives the vehicle deep and trickle charging capabilities for the drones’ and monitors’ batteries.

Equipment, steel rope, and inflatable life jackets are situated for rapid grab-and-deploy situations.

As the future use of drones in the fire service increases, it will be interesting to see where Patchogue advances next with their futuristic ideas. Stay tuned.

Dedication to Firefighter Kevin M. O’Rourke On May 6, 2018, the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department dedicated its recent building extension and also had a monument and street dedication in honor of Firefighter Kevin M. O’Rourke. O’Rourke was a member of FDNY Rescue Company 2 who died in the Tower One collapse on 9/11. O’Rourke, was also a member of the LawrenceCedarhurst Fire Department for seven years and later a member of the Hewlett Fire Department.

Bob Sutton of the Central Islip Fire Department received the prestigious 2018 FASNY Fire Safety Educator of the Year Award on Monday, May 7, 2018.

The ceremony was conducted by FASNY representatives prior to the CIFD meeting that night and marks only the third time that this award was presented to a Fire Safety Program Chairperson on Long Island. Bob’s incredible dedication to fire safety and education has resulted in one of the finest programs in New York State.

Since 1995, Bob has continuously expanded and improved the CIFD Fire Prevention Committee’s work, which visits all Central Islip schools during Fire Prevention Week and culminates in the Open House event on that Friday. This is regularly attended by up to 1,000 community residents and children who observe and participate in numerous training and awareness exercises. Awards are also presented to the school children who participate in the annual fire prevention poster contest at each school.

Additionally, Bob and his committee give presentations at local businesses and at other community gatherings and events throughout the year.

Bob has served as President of the Suffolk County Fire Safety Educators from 2006 to 2009, and again from 2011 to 2017. He also currently serves as Vice-President of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association.

SCVFA Memorial Service

On Sunday, May 6, 2018, the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and Ladies Auxillary held their 80th Reverend John P. Halpin annual Memorial Service.

At the seervice, 75 firefighters and 13 ladies auxiliary members were honored for their dedicated service during 2017.

Presiding over the ceremony was President Christopher Delveccio, Third Vice-President Robert Sutton and Sergeant-at-Arms Vincent Ammirati.

Also in attendance was the Reverend John Fleischmann, Jean Christensen, President of the Suffolk County Ladies Auxiliary, Chief Robert Walther, Coram FD and Coram Fire Department members.

11th Annual Chuck Varese Tournament

The Northport Fire Department hosted the 11th annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at the Northport Fire Department training grounds. The annual event is held in memory of Northport Firefighter Chuck Varese who was hit and killed by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle in 2008. Several departments from both Nassau and Suffolk counties were on hand for the event to put their skills to the test. At the end of the day the top three were East Northport, Commack and Selden.

Bethpage’s Hassett and Dunn 40th Memorial Service

The Bethpage Fire Department, family members and neighboring departments came out on a rainy Sunday morning as they do every year to remember Firefighter Robert Hassett and Captain Joseph Dunn on the 40th anniversary of their deaths while fighting an arson fire at the Brothers Three Pool store on Hempstead Turnpike on May 25, 1978. Both gravesites and the Brothers Three store were visited with a short service at each, along with a wreath laying ceremony. Eagle Scout Project Honors 9/11 Hero Terry Farrell Sean Nolan of East Northport was recently awarded the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout rank at a court of honor held on May 9, 2018.

Sean’s Eagle Scout project was completed at the headquarters of the Dix Hills Fire Department. Honoring fallen New York City Firefighter and Dix Hills Assistant Chief Terry Farrell who was killed in the September 11 attacks, Sean completed two brick paver walks and a sitting area that surrounds a section of World Trade Center steel. In Sean’s speech to all who attended he said, “It was my honor to do such a project for a man that gave his life so selflessly, he is a true hero.”

Sean, 17, is a senior at Northport High School and will be attending Johnson and Wales University in the fall.

Franklin Square-Munson Juniors Place Flags

On May 26, 2018, the Franklin Square and Munson Juniors visited the Franklin Square 9/11 Memorial on Naple Avenue next to the Franklin Square Historical Society building and placed flags at all of the 24 name markers which represent Nassau County residents who lost their lives on 9/11. Rockville Centre Installation The Rockville Centre Fire Department held its annual inspection and installation dinner on Friday, May 11, 2018, at The Inn at New Hyde Park. Deer Park’s Tatarian Receives Award for Action On May 2, 2018, during the Deer Park Fire Department’s monthly meeting, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly and Deer Park’s Chief of the Department Phil Scarfi presented Lt. Brad Tatarian with the Law and Order Awards from the American Legion, and the Town of Babylon Certificate of Appreciation for his heroics on December 30, 2017. Lt. Tatarian came upon an MVA rollover at the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Wantagh Avenue with two victims trapped.

Brad and an off-duty NYPD officer were able to free the driver and the passenger from the car and drag them away from the car as it became fully engulfed.

No ‘Day at the Beach’ at the Air Show The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach has become one of the largest air shows in the United States and it is an honor and a privilege for the Wantagh Fire Department to provide Fire/EMS and Rescue services year after year. Wantagh is the lead agency responsible for this task, assisted by many neighboring departments. Members sacrifice long hours to ensure the safety of the hundreds of thousands of spectators who attend each year, as well as maintain adequate coverage for the residents of the Wantagh Fire District during the event. Leadership personnel from the WFD are involved throughout the year in planning and coordinating with many local, state and federal agencies.

Although this year’s event was shortened to just one day due to rain, responders were ready, as always, to answer the call. On Saturday, with larger than normal crowds due to inclement weather forecasted for Sunday, there were 40 assorted units staffed by 173 personnel.

Comparable numbers were ready to go on Sunday but were turned back once the show was cancelled. While this might sound like a lot of equipment and personnel to some, consider how difficult it would be to get through the heavy traffic in the event of an emergency. That is why it is necessary to stage resources at various locations throughout Jones Beach State Park for the duration of the event.

During the Air Show there were 11 incidents that required Fire/EMS response and six people were transported to area hospitals. Fortunately, none of the incidents were serious. Back home, in the confines of the Wantagh Fire District, there were five calls for assistance, which were

easily handled by members not assigned to the beach. Although Sunday’s rainout gave everyone a bit of a break, members had to bring much equipment that was staged back to the mainland as well as prepare for a Memorial Day Parade on Monday.

The Chiefs, officers and members would like to thank the many departments that willingly assist Wantagh each year at the show by providing additional equipment and personnel. It was very gratifying to hear many departments respond, “we'll see you next year,” over their radio as units were being released from their assignment for the day.

Romaine and Panico Tour Mastic Beach Ambulance HQ Site

Recently, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (left) and Councilman Dan Panico (right) were given a tour of the new headquarters of Mastic Beach Ambulance Company currently under construction on Main Street. The 18,000-square-foot building will house five drive-through vehicle bays, to allow for more efficient emergency response and equipment maintenance operations. The drive-through design of the bays improves the efficiency and safety of operations by allowing the company members to respond onto both Main Street and Diana Drive. The new building will accommodate up to 15 vehicles and will feature more updated EMT volunteer housing, equipment storage, and decontamination facilities. The Mastic Beach Ambulance Headquarters is expected be open and operational by Fall 2018.

The Hidden Danger Killing Firefighters

By Ray Cooney This month’s article is not about cooking. It was my fourth time asked to be on the Dr. Oz Show. This time would be different. It was not going to be on cooking or safety tips. The subject of the show was “The Hidden Dangers Killing Firefighters.”

The producers of the show contacted me the day before the shoot, in somewhat of a panic. They informed me that Dr. Oz wanted to have a group of firefighters on the set. At the end of the show, he wanted to thank them for their service and ask a few questions. I told them that I would see what I could do. I posted a Facebook message asking firefighters to show up in Manhattan on a Tuesday morning with one-day notice. With my fingers crossed, we received an overwhelming response. Thirty-plus firefighters showed up, coming from Boston to Maryland in support of a topic that hit close to home for all of them.

A guest, on this episode of Dr. Oz, was Boston news anchor, Blaire

Miller. They were discussing this hidden danger, which I’m sure you know, is cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of death amongst firefighters. One case Blaire discussed, was about Firefighter Glen Preston, of the Boston Fire Department. At 39 years of age, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is the father of four young children. Glen knew he wanted to be a firefighter since he was two-years old. He thought, the way most firefighters think, that if this job is going to take me, it’s going to be while fighting a fire. When he heard the news about his cancer, he couldn’t believe it. Most firefighters sign up for this job without giving a thought to getting this “occupational cancer.” Yes, it’s an occupational cancer. That is how it was described on the show.

After Glen shared his story, Blaire proceeded to provide some tips on how to avoid getting the type of cancer he had. They were tips that most firefighters know but, unfortunately, become complacent about following. One main tip was wearing your SCBA mask during a fire (which we do), but also wearing it during the overhaul part of the job (which most don’t do). This is when most of the toxins are in the air. Another tip was keeping our gear clean and showering after a job to wash away any remnants left behind, thereby decreasing our exposure to contaminants.

At the end of the episode, Dr. Oz thanked us all for our service. New Ladder Dedicated by Bayville Bayville Fire Company No. 1 held a dedication and wetdown ceremony for the new Ladder 502 on the afternoon of May 12, 2018, at Centre Island Town Beach. Members and apparatus from various departments were in attendance, including several local dignitaries. Ladder 502 is built on a Spartan Gladiator chassis, has a 103-foot rearmount ladder along with a 500-gallon tank and Hale Q-Max 2000-gpm pump among many other features. Mineola’s O’Connell, Redmond, Franz Honored for 50 Years Service The officers and members of Mineola Ladder Company No. 2 held a dinner on May 19, 2018, to honor three of their members for 50 years of service. TSgt Dashan J. Briggs Honored in Westhampton Beach

At the end of March, a funeral service for Technical Sergeant Dashan J. Briggs was held at the Westhampton Beach Fire Department. TSgt. Briggs was also honored with flag arches at the Riverhead High School by the Riverhead and Southold Fire Departments. Briggs and five other members of the 106th New York Air National Guard — three of them from the Long Island area — were killed in a helicopter crash on the Iraq-Syrian border in March 2018.

Commack’s Matthew Conforte The Commack Fire Department recently mourned the loss of longtime member and Honorary Chief Matthew Conforte, 87, who answered his last alarm on April 24, 2018.

Conforte joined the department in 1959, and served as Captain of the Fire Police from 1970 to 1972, and Captain of the Rescue Squad from 1983 to 1984. Conforte successfully ran for Commack Fire District Commissioner and served from 1990 to 1999.

He was the VicePresident of the Huntington Fire District Officers Association and worked for the Town of Smithtown Public Safety Department as a Fire Marshal. He was also part of the Commack racing and drill team back in the day. Conforte had over 58 years of service and was assigned to Hook and Ladder Company One. Conforte proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in the 7th Division, 17th Regiment from 1951 to 1953.

He was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and three Bronze Campaign Stars.

His funeral was held at Christ the King Church in Commack, with burial at Pinelawn National Cemetery. Conforte was predeceased by his wife Victoria, and leaves behind his

daughters and their families, Diane and Mike, Laura, and Elaine and Michael, and grandchildren Elaina and Matt who is a member of Commack Fire Department Company One. - Fire News story by Steve Silverman, photos courtesy Commack FD

East Meadow’s Dominick Santoro

It is with deepest regret that the East Meadow Fire Department announced the passing of Dominick Santoro, an iconic Chief from Engine Company 2. Chief Santoro passed away on May 3, 2018.

Born in 1923, Dominick joined the East Meadow Fire Department and was issued badge 222 at the age of 18. Not long after, he was called to serve in World War II. He participated in the invasion of Normandy, and received the Purple Heart.

In 1948, Dominick married his sweetheart Frances Winicki. Fran’s father, uncle, and brothers, also served in the EMFD, as did Dominick’s brother Thomas. Dom and Fran would prosper in their marriage of nearly 70 years, raising three successful children before Fran’s passing in 2016.

Dominick’s participation on the East Meadow Meadowlarks racing team netted East Meadow its first New York State Championship in 1946. In the years that followed, Dominick became a part of the East Meadow Fire Department Marching Band playing the saxophone. In 1947, he was elected 1st Lieutenant of Engine Company 2 and Captain in 1951. He was elected to the position of 2nd Assistant Chief in 1952, 1st Assistant Chief in 1953, and Chief of Department in 1954 and 1955. In 1954, Chief Santoro was instrumental in establishing East Meadow's Engine Company SOP. With few enhancements, those guidelines remain in place today. In 1955 he commanded our department at the Barbara Drive B-25 plane crash.

Not long after, Dominick moved ahead to form Engine Company 1 and Ladder Company 2, and took on the challenge of reaching an agreement for the new Fire Station 3, at the corner of Newbridge and Carnation Roads.

In his years after serving as Chief, Dominick moved forward once more, serving as Fire Commissioners for two terms.

In later decades, Dominick remained an integral part of Engine Company 2. In November 2011, ex-Chief Santoro received the Town of Hempstead Firematic Award for his seven decades of service to the community. In that same year, Dominick was named “Division Marshal” leading a division in the 6th Battalion Parade.

After 76 years of service Chief Santoro was taken to his final resting place at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury on May 9, by those who loved him, his beloved EMFD, family, and friends.

His brother firefighters would like the residents to know, the ex-Chief Santoro they knew. He was a role model, a mentor, a leader, an innovator, and a gentleman.

Farmingville’s Michael A. Rocco, Sr. The Farmingville Fire Department is mourning the loss of life member and former Chief Michael A. Rocco, Sr., who passed away on May 7, 2018.

After serving our country in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1961, Mike joined the then Holtsville-Farmingville Fire Department in 1963 and was recently honored for his 55 years of active service.

When Holtsville and Farmingville split in September of 1972, Mike was elected as the first Chief of the reorganized Farmingville Fire Department, a position he held for three-plus years until the end of 1975 and was the guiding and steadying force during some unsettled times.

Among his many accomplishments, Chief Rocco was awarded Fireman of the Year in 1968 for rescuing a fellow firefighter from a working house fire and he received the award again in 1989.

Chief Rocco was a founding member of the Holtsville-Farmingville Fire Department Ambulance squad in 1966 and was recognized for responding to the most ambulance calls in 1967. In 1971, Chief Rocco was part of the crew who delivered a healthy baby boy in the back of the HFFD Cadillac ambulance while en route to the former Smithtown General Hospital.

Mike was also a founding member of the Farmingville Fire Department Benevolent Association and served as Secretary until his passing. The official position of Secretary will not be filled until next year as a tribute

to him.

Chief Rocco is survived by his wife Joan, children Mike Jr. (Jeanine), Michelle Allen (Josh Hagermann) and Suzanne Bryant (Jimmy); grandchildren Robbie, Tyler, Michael, Jimmy (Jenica) and Kimberly (Garret). Kimberly and Garret are also the proud parents of Mike and Joan's great-grandson Jackson.

The tradition of service to the community has spanned three generations. Joan served as president of the Holtsville-Farmingville Ladies Auxiliary and was a long-time member of the Farmingville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Mike Jr. was a junior firefighter in

the late 70s. Suzanne is 1st Lieutenant of Fire Police in the Miller Place Fire Department where her husband Jimmy is 3rd Assistant Chief. Michelle is a member of the Miller Place Ladies Auxiliary and Josh is an ex-Chief.

Grandsons Michael and Tyler are also members of the Miller Place Fire Department.

Chief Mike Rocco set the standard for excellence. Members of both Farmingville and Holtsville Fire Departments, young and old, spoke of his guidance, his mentoring, his friendship and his willingness to help out anyone in a tough spot. He will be missed by all.
