Remember the Reason for the Season When an idea or thought strikes us out of the blue, I believe that our heroes from the past, who are on the floor above, guide us to press onward and to do the right thing. I almost forgot to put my firematic mode aside to make room for my holiday prayers and wishes. Let me share my thoughts with you.

The holidays should be a special time for all of us. It is a time when we should put our differences aside and remember those that have been taken from us. Hopefully you gave thanks to a higher being for getting you safely through 2014. I hope that before you dove into a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, you paused to remember all of the fallen responders and their families. To date there have been 73 firefighter fatalities. Multiply that number by the average family size and you soon realize that there are a lot of people who need your support and could use comforting words to get them through the holiday season. No matter what holiday dinner you are enjoying with your loved ones, pray for the safe return of our troops who are away from their families.

I know most departments escort Santa throughout their communities. I am always touched by the member of the community who holds up a sign that says, “thank you for saving my life.” Yes, despite what you think, the community is also praying for your safety as a responder.

I remember the words of an ex-Chief in my division who was taken from this world too soon. As a chaplain, Rick ended his prayers to us by saying, “Remember the reason for the season.” He encouraged all of us to give thanks and to be watchful over each other. To all of you; may the true reason for the season be remembered.

I wish all of you a New Year full of peace and hope. Let God’s blessing inspire you to help those who need your prayers. Give thanks with a grateful heart.

The award was presented recently by the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management (IFSJLM) for his outstanding leadership and management practices and contributions to the fire service.

He exemplifies what many of us aspire to in terms of putting knowledge, research and leadership into action,” said Chief Ron Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF. Chief Compton presented the keynote address as part of the 10th Anniversary of the Research Symposium sponsored by Fire Protection Publications immediately prior to the IFSTA Validation Conference in Tulsa, OK. The award is named in recognition of Dr. Granito, Professor Emeritus and Retired Vice President for Public Service and External Affairs at the State University of New York at Binghamton and an internationally known public safety management consultant. This year Chief Compton was the unanimous choice for the prestigious award.

Boat Burns in Bellmore

On November 14, 2014, the Bellmore Fire Department was alerted for a boat fire in Newbridge Creek across from the homes on Lee Place. Second Assistant Chief Montera was first to arrive and found one boat on fire and a second one beginning to burn. First-due Engine 603 picked up a hydrant and stretched multiple lines along

with the crew from Engine 601. The fire was under control within 20 minutes with one boat destroyed and one on either side of it damaged. The Nassau County Fire Marshal was requested to investigate the cause of the fire.

Obituary

Ex-Captain Richard Weisse, Sr.

On the morning of November 15, 2014, ex-Captain Richard Weisse, Sr., was conducting a food drive for a local pantry with Junior Fire Department members when he was summoned for an alarm at the local high school.

Subsequently,after adjudication of the alarm and completion of the food drive, Mr. Weisse collapsed. The St James Fire Department was summoned, members initiated lifesaving efforts and then transported him to University Hospital at Stony Brook. Lengthy resuscitative efforts at the hospital were performed, but ex-Captain Weisse passed away.

He was a 42-year member of the St .James Fire Department, past-Captain of the Fire/Rescue/Ambulance Company, past-Lieutenant of Engine Company One, Chairman of the Junior Fire Department, a member of the Fire Prevention Committee, past-Drill Team Member and a third-generation fireman with his two children continuing the tradition.

Richard is survived by his wife of 33 year, Terry, son Richard and his daughter Tricia, grandchildren Avery and Ryder, daughter-in-law Kerry Weisse, brothers-in-law Robert and Louis Boutin, numerous nephews and many close dear friends.

A funeral mass was held at Saints Philips and James Church in St. James on November 21, 2014. Weiss was interred at St. James Episcopal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the St. James Fire Department Juniors.

The Freeport Fire Department responded to a reported house fire on the afternoon of October 19, 2014. Arriving units encountered smoke pouring from the basement with extension to the first floor. Lines were stretched and the fire was quickly brought under control.

Hewlett Basement Fire

The Hewlett Fire Department responded to the report of smoke in the basement at a home on Harris Avenue on November 4, 2014.

The alarm was upgraded to a working fire but was quickly extinguished by arriving engine companies. Mutual aid companies also responded to the scene.

Vacant Building Fire in Hempstead

Hempstead firefighters responded to a house fire on the evening of November 3, 2014. The blaze was reported in a vacant building on Meriam Street near Clinton Street. Original reports of possible squatters trapped in the house were unfounded.

Quick Work at Plainview House Fire

On October 8, 2014, the Plainview Fire Department was alerted for an automatic alarm for a house fire on Pound Ridge Road. Second Deputy Chief Al Bassetta was first on the scene and entered the home confirming a fire on the second floor with all occupants out.

Engine 9511 was first due and secured a water supply and stretched one line to the front door. Ladder 9533 began a primary search and ventilation. The fire was quickly knocked down.

House Fire in Wyandanch On October 14, 2014, the Wyandanch Fire Company responded to a working house fire on N.17th Street. Wyandanch chiefs pulled up to heavy fire pumping out exposure 3 and 4 sides of a two-story house. Wyandanch put a ladder into operation, as well as multiple handlines inside and around the back of the house, knocking down the fire. Assisting Wyandanch were Deer Park, Melville and North Babylon.

Attached Garage Goes in Deer Park

On October 24, 2014, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a house fire at the corner of West 15th Street and Park Avenue. Upon arriving Chief Larry Bradbury 1-4-30 advised there was an attached two-car garage fully involved. Occupants were out of the house at the time of the chief’s arrival. There were no reported injuries. Wyandanch, North Babylon and West Islip also responded.

One Injured in Smithtown Fire

The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a working structural fire on October 12, 2014, on Wesley Lane off of Route 111. Arriving units were confronted with a fully involved fire in a two-story wood frame house. Due to the heavy fire no attempt was made at entering. Due to the heavy fire, mutual aid was requested from Kings Park, Nesconset, Commack, Hauppauge and Nissequogue. The homeowner was transported to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center. Her condition was unknown. On scene for the Smithtown Fire Department were Chiefs 4-2-31 (Murphy), 4-2-32 (Landrigan) Engines 4-2-1, 4-2-2, 4-2-4, 4-2-5, Rescue 4-2-9, Ladder 4-2-7 and ambulances 4-265.

House Fire Stopped in Deer Park

On October 22, 2014, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a fire on Pearl Street. Deer Park’s first engine stretched a handline to the front of the house knocking down the visible fire on the outside. Wyandanch Fire Company and Dix Hills also responded to the scene.

3-FF Injuries in Massapequa Office Fire

The Massapequa Fire Department was alerted for a building fire at the intersection of Broadway and Clark Avenue early on October 14, 2014. First to arrive was Third Assistant Chief Batt who found heavy fire showing from the second floor on the exposure 2 side of a two-story office building. Chief of Department Kuechler and Second Assistant Chief Stansberry arrived shortly after; Keuchler took command. Assistant Chiefs Stansberry and Batt handled the fire attack as units arrived. Both Engine 6311 and 6315 stretched multiple lines. Ladder 632’s crew forced entry and began searches of the basement and first floor. As crews were engaged in fighting the fire they were relieved by additional crews from Engines 634, 635 and arriving mutual aid companies.

Seaford was requested for a FAST unit and was put to work and replaced by Wantagh Ladder 6911. North Massapequa arrived with Ladder 661, an additional ladder and Engine 665. Bethpage Engine 905 arrived. Standing by for Massapequa was Bethpage Ladder 4 and Farmingdale Squad 924. An interior attack took about an hour to knock down the main body of fire. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Car Fire in East Farmingdale

In August 2014, the East Farmingdale Fire Company responded to a car fire at Kevin Street and Great Neck Road. Engines 1-5-1, 15-6, Heavy Rescue 1-5-4 and Fire Police 1-5-16 arrived to find a BMW involved in the roadway. Engine 1-5-1 stretched one line to extinguish the fire. First Assistant Wisz was in charge of the scene.

Car Fire in Wantagh

On October 27, 2014, Wantagh firefighters responded to a car fire in a parking lot on North Jerusalem Road. The woman driving smelled smoke and pulled into the parking lot. The car was totaled but there were no injuries.

East Farmingdale Truck Fire

The East Farmingdale Fire Company responded to a reported vehicle fire in the rear of the Tyree Company on Route 109 on October 27, 2014. Units arrived to find an oil truck on fire. Engine 1-5-2 was first due followed by Engine 1-5-1, the crew from 1-5-2 extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes. Second Assistant Chief Joseph was in charge of the scene.

Trailer Burns in North Amityville

On November 8, 2014, the North Amityville Fire Company was alerted for a fire at the Frontier Mobile Home Park on Route 110. First arriving units found one trailer fully involved with fire spreading to a second. Engine 1-7-1 picked up a hydrant and stretched two lines and Amityville Engine 1-1-2 stretched a third. It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control with no reported injuries. The trailer was vacant and was being prepared to be removed from the park. Additional mutual aid was provided to the scene by the Amityville, East Farmingdale, Copiague and North Lindenhurst. Third Assistant Chief Benloss was in charge.

Brentwood Basement Blaze

On November 4, 2014, the Brentwood Fire Department activated for a structure fire at a boarded up residence on Hamilton Avenue. The fire was located in the basement and first floor on the number four side and heavily damaged the area. Mutual aid came from Commack for RIT, Bay Shore and East Brentwood. Brentwood Legion Ambulance was at the scene on standby.

Greenlawn FD Saves Dog from House Fire

Members of the Greenlawn Fire Department rescued a dog from a house fire on Dohne Court on October 24, 2014. During a search of the house, Greenlawn Lieutenant Angelo Santomauro and Firefighter John Modzelewski located the pet dog in the basement and carried it to safety. Cooper, a friendly golden retriever mix, was not injured and in good condition. Greenlawn was assisted by Centerport, Huntington Manor, East Northport and Dix Hills, as well as the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps. About 80 fire-

fighters using 10 pieces of apparatus battled the blaze which was brought under control within 45 minutes, led by Third Assistant Chief Mike Bellis. An aggressive attack contained the fire to the garage and attic above, saving the remainder of the home. The Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal were investigating. Suffolk FRES Coordinators were also on the scene assisting.

Wind Spreads Brentwood Fire

On November 1, 2014, the Brentwood Fire Department alerted for a house fire on Bay Shore Avenue. First arriving units encountered heavy fire showing from the exposure 1 side of the first floor. Second Assistant Chief Derbyshire arrived and took command while Third Assistant Chief Boyle handled the fire attack. Crews stretched multiple lines to both floors of the home, as the fire quickly spread to the second floor and was being driven by high winds. The crews from 3-2-8 and Heavy Rescue 3-2-18 laddered, searched and vented the home with all searches negative.

All occupants exited the house safely. The West Islip Fire Department was called for RIT and was put to work and replaced by Deer Park. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dix Hills MVA Fire on NSP The Dix Hills Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on the Northern State Parkway on September 14, 2014. The driver self-extricated after the car struck a tree on the shoulder of the parkway’s eastbound lanes near the Deer Park Avenue and burst into flames.

About 25 firefighters and rescue personnel were on the scene with an engine, two heavy rescue trucks, two ambulances, paramedic and first responder units, under the command of Chief Bill Stio, and Assistant Chiefs Tom Napolitano and Alan Berkowitz. The male driver was transported to Huntington Hospital with non-life threatening injuries by the Dix Hills Rescue Squad.

Building Fire in Hewlett

The Hewlett Fire Department was on the scene of a building fire on Rockaway Avenue on the evening of October 15, 2014.

The fire was in the ceiling of a rear setback and was quickly extinguished by arriving companies. Mutual aid units from surrounding towns assisted.

Heavy Fire in Manhasset-Lakeville On October 25, 2014, the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department responded to an inferno on Windsor Road in the Village of Thomaston.

Deputy Chief Candan was the first unit to respond and was advised that multiple calls were being received with two children possibly trapped. Chief Candan arrived on scene and reported that there was heavy fire on the first floor of a 2-½-story, peaked-roof, private dwelling and that all occupants were out of the house and accounted for. The fire started to extend to a neighboring house. All fire in the neighboring house was quickly extinguished with minimal extension to the interior.

Collapse in Garden City

On October 17, 2014, the Garden City Fire Department and Nassau County Police Department were alerted for a ceiling collapse with entrapment in the former Social Services building on County Seat Road. Two workers were trapped under the rubble in an asbestos contaminated area and removed with non-life threatening injuries. All emergency personnel, workers that escaped the collapse and the aided were decontaminated by the Fire Marshal Haz-Mat and Decon unit. Multiple departments operated at the scene.

MVA Into Building in Medford On September 30, 2014, the Medford Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle into a building at a dialysis center on Petty Lane off of North Ocean Avenue. Brookhaven Fire Marshals were the first units on scene and confirmed the vehicle had jumped the sidewalk into the wall of a doctor’s office. Nobody inside the building was hurt, but the driver was transported for injuries to a nearby medical center by Medford Volunteer Ambulance.

Hooks, Hose & Heavy Rescue Shiny New Rides North Massapequa is awaiting delivery of a Spartan ERV walkaround heavy rescue featuring a walk-in command post module built into the body and accessible from the crew cab. Smithtown currently has three Spartan ERV engines on order as does Bridgehampton with a 3,000 gallon tanker on a Kenworth chassis.

Continuing the tradition of Chicago-style colors, Meadowmere Park has a black-over-red Ferrara rescue engine in production, while Lynbrook has an engine painted in a striking gold-over-red color scheme.

The refurbishment of Elmont’s 2003 Spartan/LTI tiller will be completed by the LTC division of Smeal with a new Spartan tractor body and a complete overhaul of the aerial device. Islip Terrace is awaiting delivery of a five-ton stumpjumper, while Middle Island has received their Pierce Velocity walk-around heavy rescue.

Oldies But Goodies While the Long Island fire service has always been known for well appointed rigs, many are surprised to learn that there are numerous departments that operate apparatus that are considerably older (some as many as 40 years old).

A prime example of older apparatus still running in front line service are the many stumpjumpers built on an ex-GI chassis. Many a department across Long Island runs “GIs” that

are 1960s vintage International and AM Generals.

Following the infamous 1995 Sunrise Wildfires, many departments replaced older front line GIs, including one that was built on a 1939 Dodge chassis! The Hampton Bays FD built their original twin stumpjumpers in-house using 1969 International chassis which operated until 2001 and 2004 when they were acquired by the Jefferson (NY) FD as a second-due rig and the FASNY Museum of Firefighting in Hudson.

The Bellport FD still operates the above pictured well maintained 1967 Jeep Kaiser as unit 5-1-12A (’Lil Animal) to complement their larger 1972/1996 AM General stumpjumper (both of which were built in-house by their talented mechanics and department members). Powered by a 6.2 liter Chevy diesel engine with an auto transmission, it is equipped with a 350 gpm pump and 280 gallons of water onboard.

Purchased in the 1980s as a set of twins, it was originally a rag top supply truck assigned to the Bayonne (NJ) military depot. The other rig was eventually acquired by the Farmingville Fire Department which initially operated it as a plow truck until converting to a “mini-GI.” When retired from active service, it was purchased by a private individual who has fully restored it to its original condition.

While present day apparatus are far more technologically advanced, these older workhorses prove their worth on a regular basis by still putting “the wet stuff on the red stuff!”

MVA Into Building in Selden On the evening of October 13, 2014, the Selden Fire Department and Suffolk Police were called to an MVA on Middle Country Road where an SUV lost control, crossed five lanes of traffic and slammed into and through the Grand Prix Go Karting building. 7 Injured in Valley Stream MVA Seven people suffered non-life threatening injuries after a minivan and an SUV collided at the intersection of South Central Avenue and West Valley Stream Boulevard in Valley Stream just after noon on October 19, 2014. The collision caused the SUV to roll onto its side, but the occupants were able to escape to safety. Valley Stream firefighters and EMS personnel were at the scene.

1 Injured in N. Babylon MVA On October 14, 2014, the North Babylon Fire Company responded to an MVA at the corner of Deer Park Avenue and Prairie Drive. The first responding engine advised the North Babylon chief that they had a pin and needed hydraulics. North Babylon’s EMS personal climbed through the driver’s side to reach the trapped victim. 1 Dead in N. Lindenhurst MVA On October 24, 2014, the North Lindenhurst Fire Department was activated for a head-on MVA with entrapment at Robbins Street and North Wellwood Avenue. The crew from Heavy Rescue 1-11-5 put cutters and spreaders into operation to open the driver’s door and lift the dashboard to extricate the driver in about 10 minutes. Once removed the driver was transported to Nassau University Medical Center by Ambulance 1-117; he later died. The other driver was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with minor injuries by Ambulance 1-11-6, Fire Police 1-11-12 handled traffic control.

Fatality in Bay Shore MVA

Suffolk County Third Squad detectives are investigating an afternoon motor vehicle crash that killed a 21-year-old woman in Bay Shore on October 29, 2014 on Sunrise Highway west near Exit 43.

The woman was stopped on the right shoulder when a car struck her sedan. The sedan then struck the back of a flatbed tow truck that was stopped in front of the woman’s car and had responded to

assist her. She was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the other car was also transported to Southside where he was in critical but stable condition. The driver of the tow truck was not injured.

Smithtown MVA On October 29, 2014, the Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for an MVA on Route 347 westbound near the Insignia Steak House. The incident involved one car that struck a tree. The driver had to be extricated by the Smithtown Fire Department and Suffolk County PD Emergency Services. The driver was taken in critical condition to Stony Brook University Medical Center by ambulance.

Bad 2-Car MVA in Deer Park On October 12, 2014, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a two-car accident on the corner of Long Island and Wright Avenues. Upon arriving, Deer Park had to extricate one of the drivers. Chief Larry Bradbury and his EMS ambulance team determined that the driver’s injuries were internal and severe and requested a Suffolk County Police helicopter to transport the driver to Stony Brook Hospital. 12 Children Injured in Islip Bus-Truck MVA The Islip Fire Department was alerted for an MVA at Saxon Avenue and the eastbound service road of Sunrise Highway on October 23, 2014, involving a school bus and oil truck. The bus had 19 children onboard and the oil truck was carrying 1,000 gallons of oil. The crash caused substantial damage to both vehicles and injured 12 of the children on the bus. Heavy Rescue 3-4-14 and Engine 3-4-9 responded and secured the vehicles and stretched a booster line. All of the injured children were transported by Islip Exchange Ambulance, Bay Shore-Brightwaters Ambulance and Islip Terrace Fire Department with minor injuries; neither of the drivers were injured. Fire Department units were under command of Second Assistant Chief Butler.

The Association of Fire Districts of New York State recently held their fall meeting and conference at Honors Haven in Ellenville. President Thomas E. Herlihy, Jr., welcomed everyone to the conference and introduced John J. Salka Jr., who was the keynote speaker.

Chief Salka captivated the audience as he spoke about “Five Alarm Leadership.� Throughout the conference commissioners from NYS attended classes on various topics.

Since the event fell on Halloween, a costume party with live music was held.

Babylon Chiefs Association Honors NYS Assemblyman Sweeney

On October 15, 2014, the Babylon Town Chiefs Association honored New York State Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney who was retiring after 26 years of faithful and dedicated service. Assemblyman Sweeney was elected in March 1988 and had been reelected every term since. Bob was a great supporter of the volunteer fire and rescue service throughout his career. Chief James Harrington presented Assemblyman Sweeney with a plaque with the department

patches from each of the Town of Babylon fire departments and ambulance corps. Chief Harrington thanked him for his dedicated service to all of his constituents and let him know both how much his hard work was appreciated and how much he would be missed.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer of the Town of Babylon and Senator Phil Boyle were also on hand for the award ceremony.

Medal Day 2014 in Suffolk County On September 28, 2014, the Bohemia Fire Department under the command of Chief Richard Anderson, hosted the Vocational Education and Extension Board (VEEB) of the County of Suffolk Medal Day 2014. This year, VEEB Vice President Alan Groveman was the Master of Ceremonies.

Firehouse Kitchen With FF Ray Cooney

While going through e-mails, I noticed one recurring message. People kept e-mailing me about the shows I did with my father-in-law, Anthony Cino. It wasn’t so much the recipes they were talking about — as delicious as they were — but his strong on-screen presence. In our first show, he spoke about growing up in Brooklyn, smelling the foods from the other apartments and cooking with his mother. Our viewers were touched by the sincerity and heartfelt sharing of the fond memories of his youth. One thing about Anthony, though, he never stops! I had a hard time getting a word in.

After he finished his dish, I told him that I had a dish to make. It was my famous Blue Glove Tuna. He looked at me with a smirk because I said, “You made fish. Now I’m going to make fish.” Blue Glove Tuna comes from my days of working in the New York City Fire Department. The first time I made it at the firehouse, the men came into the kitchen and leered at me in disbelief.

Was I really mixing the tuna with blue EMS gloves on my hands? I told them to calm down and that I had washed them with soap and water before use.

This was more sanitary than having my bare hands mixing it! I prefer to use my hands to mix the tuna, rather than a fork, because the hands give it a smoother

texture and ensure the ingredients are mixed evenly. Even though my Blue Glove Tuna gets rave reviews at the firehouse, my wife doesn’t leave me in control of the tuna salad at home!

In the second show I filmed with my father-in-law, he talked about his present life, which includes his wife of 49 years, Roselie, his three beautiful daughters and eight adoring grandchildren. Anthony is like a second father to me because I have known him since I was 15. He has always made me feel like one of his own and has given me his unconditional support throughout the years. Come on! He even let me marry his youngest daughter!

The two shows I filmed with him are very special to me. He has a standing invitation on Firehouse Kitchen. As for the public, please no more e-mails about him replacing me as the host!

Hazmat Training at SUNY Farmingdale

On October 25, 2014, the Babylon Town Hazmat team conducted a training drill held at SUNY Farmingdale. The drill was activated by Team Coordinator Mark Stone and the team made up of the Town of Babylon Fire Marshals and members from the 11 departments within the town and the Wyandanch-Wheatly Heights Ambulance Corps. The members responded and set up teams of technicians and operations personnel after WWHVAC provided the medical monitoring, medical technicians and ambulances for the drill. The scenario was an attempted suicide with a room taped closed, and hydrogen sulfide involved as per a note on the door.

Techs were able to safely enter the room and determine that the chemical was present, but the victim was still breathing. An additional team came to the room and extricated the victim to safety where he was decontaminated, stablized and transported to the hospital. Additional training is scheduled for November involving suit training and procedures for responding to a possible Ebola call. The team extends their deepest gratitude to SUNY Farmingdale and the East Farmingdale Fire Department for hosting this drill.

Long Island Day at the Firemen’s Home

September 21, 2014, was Long Island Day at the Firemen’s Home in Hudson (NY).

A memorial service was held and two unique stained glass windows in the home’s chapel were unveiled.

Smithtown Fire Prevention Day

The Smithtown Fire Department held its annual fire prevention day on October 26, 2014, at the headquarter’s firehouse on Elm Avenue. Several displays were on hand for families to see.

Children and adults were taught the dangers of fire and how to react if a fire should occur, also how to prevent fires. Firefighters also showed the public the latest technology they are equipped with on the various fire apparatus.

Water Pump Rebuild Class

On October 27 and 28, 2014, the Westbury Fire Department hosted a fire pump training class. Members from Long Island Emergency Vehicle Technicians spent two days using a PowerPoint presentation and handson training. Montauk Fire Prevention

October 12, 2014, was a very busy day at the Montauk Firehouse. After a pancake and sausage breakfast, sponsored by the MFD and the Lions Club, visitors were invited to tour the MFD trucks and other apparatus, and to get a bird’s eye view of Montauk from their ladder truck.

There was a special dramatic demonstration by the MFD Extrication Team, fresh from winning first place in the national 2014 Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee competition. The audience had a chance to see an MVA rescue in action.

Implementation The reason I find this important enough to use as a safety tip is because implementation of a plan or purchase is something we, as safety officers, do not have the authority to perform. This is why our job as a safety officers can be frustrating and challenging.

At the scene we deal with incident commander, at our meetings it’s the chief. So how can we get things implemented that are important to safety? We must get their agreement or the approval.

Why are things we know are important to safety so difficult to get implemented? To undersatnd that we must know what we may be working against.

Culture The Fire and EMS services have a long-standing. Most of us feel we do things in a safe manner and, most of the time we do. We don’t realize what we do are often things that are part of our culture and not easily changeable. But as safety officers, we know that there are over 85,000 injuries per year, and about 100 LODDs per year.

Tradition How many things do we do because it is tradition? A good example is moving vehicles that have been involved in an MVA. I was recently at a scene involving two vehicles. Firemen got in both vehicles, started them up and with the engines clanging and bumpers dragging, backed the cars into a parking lot to get them off the road.

Standard Operating Procedures A car into a building will bring the rescue truck, but leave an ambulance, a pumper and fire police behind. We can suggest that the chief have a written SOP to include these vehicles, but we can only suggest it. If the chief doesn’t do it, it doesn’t get done.

Risk Management How many departments have a risk management plan? Why have one? As safety officers we could suggest one, but again, it would be up to the chief to put one together. As safety officers we have the answers to reduce firefighter injuries and death. How do we get this information to the “powers that be” to implement them?

Bill Metcalf First Vice President of the IAFC wrote (IAFC, On Scene 8/1/13), “Perhaps most inconveniently, the truth is that we have the ability to fix the problem, but it requires us to change our behaviors in ways we don’t want to hear about. In spite of the 10 Standard Fire Orders, the 18 Watchout Situations and 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives, too many firefighters still don’t come home.”

NFPA 1500 Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program is a good place to start. A good risk management plan should cover, “Risks associated with Administration, Facilities, Training, and Vehicle operations, PPE, Operations at emergency and non-emergency incidents. A Risk Management Program should include Risk identification, evaluation, priorities, control techniques and monitoring.”

What we have to do as safety officers is convince incident command that we are an additional set of eyes, we are there to help and to provide additional information regarding the incident. The key word here is we must convince him or her certainly not by telling them. As soon as I hear their words, “I told my Chief,” I know it ended there.

According to FEMA, risk management practices in the fire service(FA-166 12/96), “It is virtually impossible for the incident commander outside a structure to fully evaluate conditions inside. In most cases, the risk of penetration into the fire atmosphere can be monitored and evaluated only at the place it occurs.”

I believe things are getting better. LODDs will be down this year.

We as safety officers are not the sole solution, but we are part of the overall solution. We do not have any authority to implement any of our requests, other than to stop, alter or suspend if it is imminent that something will cause harm to the first responder.

Don’t give up! Things are changing slowly. You are doing your job, but culture and tradition are slow to change.

Asharoken Police Chief Thanks Dix Hills Fire Chief

The Dix Hills Fire Department assisted the Asharoken Police Department by providing an EMT to accompany the police boat on patrol during the July Fourth Fireworks Show and bonfires in Asharoken Village. Due to the increased boat traffic and safety concerns during the show, the Town of Huntington imposed a five-mph speed limit in the waters surrounding Asharoken.

Wantagh Firefighters Receive Firematic Award

The Town of Hempstead Firematic awards were presented October 16, 2014, at Hempstead Town Hall. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray made the presentations to members of the Bellmore, East Rockaway, Levittown, Lynbrook, Mineola, Point Lookout/Lido, Rockville Center and the Wantagh Fire Department. The Wantagh Fire Department had five members who received Firematic Awards for their work and dedication in excess of 20 years to the department and community. Ex-Captain Thomas Brandon was honored for his work with the Hazardous Materials Unit, ex-Captain John Licata and Firefighter/EMT Marcela Loeber were honored for their work in Fire Prevention, ex-Chief John Loeber was honored for his work with the Training Committee and ex-Captain Robert MacKay was honored for his work with the Underwater Search and Rescue Team. All were presented medals and a bar to be worn upon there dress uniform. 1974 North Patchogue FD Rescue It was a happy reunion at the North Patchogue Fire Department headquarters in this 1974 photo between toddler James Arthur and his rescuers. James lived in the Mount Vernon Avenue apartments with his mother when they had a serious fire there.. James hid from the fire in bedroom closet and when the NPFD arrived on the scene they searched their apartment finding the boy and brought him to safety. C.W. Post Field Renamed for Durrell “Bronko” Pearsall

September 6, 2014, was the home opening game for the CW Post Football Team. This year an extra special occasion took place at the game. Prior to the kickoff, the field was renamed The Durrell "Bronko" Pearsall Memorial Stadium. Bronko, a former star of the Post football team, was a firefighter in FDNY Rescue 4 when he was

killed on September 11, 2001. He was also a firefighter in Victory Engine 4 of the Hempstead Fire Department, a member of the FDNY Pipes and Drums, and a Captain of the FDNY Football Team. Members gathered to remember a great guy and cheer on his former team.

NYS PETITIONS YOU NEED TO SIGN We urge all volunteer firefighters to login into “i-petitions.com” and sign three petitions of interest to the fire service.

1. We are asking that NYS increase the annual NYS DEC grant program from $1,000 to $5,000; many states use the federal Volunteer Fire Assistance funds to support projects up to $15,000. This $1,000 cap doesn’t purchase much equipment in New York - nor pay for the NY Forest Ranger who personally delivers the check. This is hardly cost effective; 2. We are asking NYS to release its funds collected under the “NYS Volunteer Fire and EMS Recruitment and Retention Grant program;” these funds collected through taxpayer voluntary donations are being held for no reason other than to make interest for NYS. The program has only opened once since the law was passed and has been blasted by the State Comptroller’s Office for withholding the funds without any basis;

3. We are asking that independent fire companies such as Albertson, Great Neck Alerts, Great Neck Vigilants, and East Farmingdale be allowed to submit applications along with other fire districts in NYS under the Critical Infrastructure Grant Program.

These departments protect critical infrastructure such as the Merchant Marine Academy and Republic Airport but can’t seek training funds unlike other fire districts; Signing the petitions takes less than 30 seconds and could provide thousands of dollars to NY’s firefighters. To find the petition, go to “ipettitions.com,” enter “volunteer firefighter assistance” in the search box and click on each of the three petitions.

FIREHOUSE WORLD 2015 BRINGS NEW SESSIONS, NAMES TO SAN DIEGO Firehouse World returns to San Diego in 2015, but this year it’s a few weeks earlier than normal. So update your calendar as you prepare to join thousands of firefighters from Jan. 25 to 29, 2015, for training, education and product famaliarization.

“It’s no secret that the fire service is changing and we’re excited to say that Firehouse World is changing too,” said Firehouse Editor-in-Chief Timothy Sendelbach. “This year’s program features over 120 programs being presented by some of the most well-known and experienced instructors in the country.”

They include strategy and tactics for urban, rural and wildland incidents, leadership programs for future and veteran fire officers.

“After Firehouse World 2014, many of you were asked how we could improve the conference. An overwhelming number of you said, bring back hands-on training. I’m proud

to say, you spoke and Firehouse listened” said Sendelbach. “This year, with the help of the Northern and Southern Training Officers Association, attendees will be offered the opportunity to choose from eight hands-on training programs, three of which will include live fire.”

Tim Sandifer will lead “Modern Fire Behavior (MFB)/Understanding Flow Path,” explains the physics of fire, flow path, air track and other crucial findings from recent studies.

“Modern Fireground Operations,” is another live fire class, but it focuses on engine company operations.

Obituaries Centerport’s and FDNY’s Daniel Heglund Mourned Daniel Heglund was born on September 23, 1955, in Mineola. In 1973, Dan began volunteering at the Centerport Fire Department. This experience as well as encouragement from his brother, Paul, sparked his interest in his later career as a NYC firefighter; he joined the FDNY in 1982 and was detailed to Engine 75 in the Bronx, later transferring over to Ladder 33.

Dan loved working in the “Animal House” and shared many great war stories from his time there. In 1993, he transferred to Rescue 4 in Queens which he called home until his retirement in 2003.

Heglund worked at Ground Zero and

eventually ended up battling a 9/11-related cancer for several years.

Sadly, he gave up his brave fight on September 22, 2014, a day before his 59th birthday, and the day two other firefighters died from 9/11-related diseases.

Heglund is survived by his wife Arlene, and children Amanda and Sam, and brother Paul, a Captain in the FDNY. Dan often said that if he had a chance to live his life over he wouldn’t have changed a thing. Dan Heglund was a firefighter, he helped people and saved lives, that’s who he was.

He was an ex-captain of the Rescue Squad, and an EMT and Lab Tech at Eastern Long Island Hospital.

A 40-year US Army man, Soto retired as Master Sergeant after having served with the 82nd Airborne Division and the Special Forces.

Port Jeff Mourns Loss of Hon. Chief Walter Baldelli On October 31, 2014, the Port Jefferson Fire Department lost its eldest member, Honorary Chief Walter Baldelli. Born June 10, 1918, Walt was a 67year member of the department serving in the Rescue Engine and Hose Co. 3.

Joining the department following his service in the Army during WWII, Walt made it through the ranks to Captain. In 1993, Walt became the department’s 10th Honorary Chief for his contributions to the department and community. On July 4, 2001, Walt was the Grand Marshal of the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s Annual July 4th Parade.

A fire department service was held on Sunday November 2, 2014, with interment the following day. The chiefs, officers and personnel of the department along with the assistance of the Terryville and Mt. Sinai Fire Departments helped Walt on his journey “home” to rest with respect and dignity.

“Walt will be missed by the entire fire department family,” Chief of Department Dave Williams stated, and thanked all those involved in preparation and execution of the details and ceremonies.

Joe Rosano was a past-member with the Syosset Fire Department and employee with the district. Joe was also past-Vice President and an active member with the Nassau County Fire Riders.

Ex-Chief & Past Commissioner Carl Amato The Deer Park Fire Department announced the passing of ex-Chief and pastCommissioner Carl Amato. Carl was 79 years old. He is survived by his wife Helen. He worked for the Grumman Corporation before retiring to Florida.

Amato joined the fire service in 1954 as a member of the West Hempstead Fire Department. He joined the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department in 1959, where he was a life member and served as Chief of the Department from 1970-1972. During his tenure as chief, Deer Park formed its Junior Fire Department.

Other positions with the department included Assistant Chief and Captain and Lieutenant of Engine Co. #3. He served as President of the Deer Park Fire Department, Engine Co. #3, Deer Park Exempt Benevolent Association, and Deer Park Ex-Chiefs Association. Amato was a member of Board of Fire Commissioners for 20 years, and serving as Chairman for many years. At one time, he was active with the department’s racing and softball teams, and band. Amato was honored with Deer Park’s “Fireman of the Year” award in 1973.

His influence has always extended well beyond the local area, as he served as President of both the Town of Babylon and Suffolk County Chief’s Councils and has served in the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs

since 1967, including a position on the State Board of Directors. Carl was elected as President of the NYSAFC in 1994.

Deer Park has long been the beneficiary of Chief Amato’s firefighting advances. He was instrumental in placing the fire district on a firm financial footing with long-term planning that included a 10-year truck replacement program. He was successful on the political front winning numerous grants from New York State to lessen the burden on the Deer Park taxpayers.

Amato’s fire service affiliations were numerous. He was a member and chairman of the Suffolk County Fire Advisory Board, as well as a past president and life member of the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association and Fire Chief’s Council of Suffolk County. Amato was a member of the Suffolk County Fireman’s Association, where he served on the Legislative Committee, was a member and Sergeant-at-Arms with the Suffolk County Fire Districts Association, and served on the Suffolk County Recruitment and Retention Committee. He was a member of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York and a life member of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. Amato was also a life member of the National Fire Protection Association, where he also served as

a regional representative and on the Technical Committee of the Fire Service Section. He was a life member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, a charter member of the IAFC Volunteer Chief Officers Section, a member of the Eastern Division of the IAFC, and a member of the National Fire Academy Alumni Association.

Obituary

Centereach FD’s Richard P. McKenna

Former Centereach Fire District Mechanic of 34 years, Richard P. McKenna, was remembered for his dedication and service. Richard was a member of Engine Co. 1, the department racing drill team, and the fire department band. Richard served as a volunteer firefighter beginning in 1956 and retired from the department in 2006.

Richard’s father, Arthur McKenna, was one of the original members of Centereach Fire Department and worked for the town’s Fire Police from 1946 until 1959. Richard played a lead role in the restoration of the antique fire engine named “Sweet Pea.” Family and friends remember Richard dearly. His hard work, gentle smile, and caring heart live on through those blessed to have known him.
