Box 5-5-8087 Do you remember NYC Box 5-5-8087? I am sure you do. This was the alarm box that summoned the Fire Department of the City of New York to the World Trade Center for a plane that crashed into Tower One. Ironically, WTC 1, or the North Tower, was the first of the twin towers to be completed, the first to be hit by a plane on September 11, and the last to be destroyed. This horrific day is always in our minds and with the recent slew of attacks in Israel and Gaza, commercial planes being shot down over the Ukraine and American soldiers being killed in Afghanistan, we become a little more sensitized to the fact that, as first responders, we must be forever on guard, realizing that terrorists still want to bring harm to America. Every call that you go on must be taken seriously and responded to with caution. Simply put, never leave your guard down. As I write my September editorial, I pause to give remembrance to the firefighters I personally knew
who lost their lives on 9/11. I think of the families that were broken apart by that tragic day. Firefighters continue to die from injuries and cancer sustained from working at the WTC pile in an effort to recover the victims, The FDNY has continued to honor those lost in the years that followed the attack. On a side note, I commend past-Commissioner Sal Cassano, current-Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro, Chief of Department Edward Kilduff and the numerous chiefs, officers, firefighters and friends in government, who always come to the plaque dedications in support of the families that have lost a loved one. On September 11, 2014, I will join the members of the FDNY as they start their day in prayer to remember the fallen firefighters whose lives were lost as a result of the attack on the World Trade Center. …Dennis

The Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center will hold a charity golf outing in memory of Nelson H. Finkelman, benefitting the Nassau University Medical Center Burn Center (NCBC) on September 15, 2014, at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course in Woodbury. ANNOUNCEMENTS FASNY 2014 FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR: BOHEMIA FD’s THOMAS GORMAN
The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has named Thomas J. Gorman, a member of the Bohemia Fire Department, the FASNY 2014 Firefighter of the Year. The award will be presented to Gorman at FASNY's annual convention in Albany. Firefighter Gorman is being recognized for his heroism during a January 11th, 2013 apartment house fire where he fought through heavy smoke and oppressive heat to first locate, and then remove a resident from a rear bedroom on the second floor. In the early morning hours of January 11, 2013, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a reported fire in the Fairfield apartment complex on Middletown Road. Chief of Department Richard Andersen and Second Assistant Chief Sterling Haynes arrived on scene within minutes and advised they had a working fire with a report of a person trapped. Moments later, Bohemia Truck 6, including Firefighter Gorman, arrived on scene and began a primary search of the structure to locate the trapped victim. Firefighter Gorman went to the second floor and amid very challenging conditions, began his search. Gorman started his search in a front bedroom, where he encountered a cat, which he scooped up and brought back to the staircase landing and handed it off to Assistant Chief Haynes before resuming his search and heading into a second bedroom in the rear of the apartment — still looking for the reported trapped victim. As he entered the rear bedroom, Gorman’s vibra-alert on his Air Pack activated, indicating that he only had about 25 percent of the air left in his tank; he had just several more minutes to find the victim before he would run out of air and have to leave the structure. Alone, he moved through the rear-bedroom, breaking windows with his helmet to ventilate the extreme heat and smoke. Gorman ultimately found the woman on a bed and while running out of air himself, dragged the resident out to the stairway landing. Other firefighters took the fire victim down the stairs to the outside, where CPR was initiated and advanced life support efforts were administered. Gorman is a 20-year member of the Bohemia Fire Department and in his tenure has held elected positions including President and Vice President of Engine Company 1, as well as Fire Prevention Officer and has chaired numerous committees. He is an 18-year decorated Police Officer with the Old Westbury Police Department. Currently a member of Engine Company #2, Gorman has been the recipient of numerous department awards including Unit Citations, the Hurst Green
Cross Awards (1993 and 2013), and the 1995 Long Island Brush Fires award. He has been recognized by the department for numerous Pre-Hospital Saves and has twice received the Chief’s Award for his contributions to the department as well as the community. In addition to being awarded Bohemia Fire Department’s highest award for this rescue, the Medal of Valor, Firefighter Gorman has been recognized by the Islip Town Chiefs Council for his actions at the working apartment fire. The Suffolk County Fire Academy will present him with a Gold Medal of Valor in September at the Bohemia Fire Department. As the recipient of three distinguished Firefighter of the Year Awards (FASNY’s; the Southern NY Volunteer Firemen’s Association’s and the Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association’s), Tom’s friends and his two young sons like to tease him that he’s won “The Trifecta.” Sons Brennan, aged 13, and Luke, aged 9, also tease their Dad that they’re tired of all the recognition. “I know it’s common to say, ‘I am just doing my job,’ but that is actually the way I feel. While I appreciate volunteers getting recognition for their service, being honored in this way is actually very humbling,” said Gorman. Bohemia-resident Gorman, is a graduate of St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip and SUNY Farmingdale. His sons attend school in the Shoreham-Wading River school district.
FIRE APPARATUS MANUFACTURERS’ASSOCIATION AWARDS 2014 SCHOLARSHIP
The Fire Apparatus Manufacturers’ Association has awarded its 2014 Phillip L. Turner Fire Protection Scholarship to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo student Gary Dominguez. Dominguez graduated from University of California Santa Cruz with a degree in Business Management and Economics. He is currently a Fire Protection Engineering Graduate Student at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and maintains a 3.925 GPA. He received the $5,000 scholarship in recognition of his outstanding academic achievement and commitment to the fire service. The award is given annually by FAMA and has been sponsored since 2009 by FAMA member Akron Brass Co., a worldwide marketer and manufacturer of high performance life-safety, fire fighting and emergency rescue equipment. A presentation was made today at the FAMA Technical Committee meeting held in conjunction with the FireRescue International conference in Dallas, TX.

5 Businesses Burn in Williston Park
Early on July 24, 2014, the Williston Park Fire Department was alerted for a building fire at Goodrich Street and Willis Avenue. First arriving units encountered heavy fire coming from a shoe repair store which was spreading to surrounding businesses. First-due Engine 863 put multiple lines in operation, as Ladder 862 set up in front of the building for a master stream operation. The fire extended into the common cockloft and spread horizontally, causing multiple collapses and consumed five businesses. Mutual aid was provided by East Williston, Roslyn, Mineola, Garden City Park, ManhassetLakeville, Port Washington, Albertson, Carle Place, Westbury, New Hyde Park, Great Neck Alerts, Floral Park and Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Garage Fire in West Islip
On July 31, 2014, the West Islip Fire Department activated for a structure fire on Udall Road. Upon arrival, a working fire was encountered in the 1-2 corner of the attached garage. With 3-17-30, Blaise Gemellaro, in charge, a quick knockdown was made and overhaul started to check for extension. Mutual aid was requested from North Babylon for the RIT, Babylon for an engine to the scene, and Bay Shore to stand by at West Islip’s headquarters. Dog Alerts Family to Huntington House Fire
The family dog was credited with alerting a sleeping couple and their son of a raging fire at their home on Dumbarton Drive in Huntington on August 4, 2014. The Huntington Fire Department arrived to find a heavy fire condition in the two-story cape with flames through the roof, and began an aggressive attack. They were assisted by crews from Halesite, Cold Spring Harbor and Huntington Manor, with Greenlawn on standby. Nearly 50 firefighters using seven pieces of apparatus battled the blaze which was contained within 1-1/2 hours. Units were under the command of Chief Robert Berry, assisted by Deputy Chiefs Jesse Cukro and Robert Conroy. There were no injuries reported and the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal are investigating. - Fire News story by Steve Silverman, photos by Scott Dalrymple

House Fire in Massapequa
The Massapequa Fire Department responded on June 23, 2014, to a house fire on Fox Boulevard. Chief of Department Keuchler was the first to arrive to heavy smoke pushing from the second floor and attic. Assistant Chiefs Beneville, Stansberry and Batt arrived and handled the attic as units began to arrive. Engine 631’s crew stretched two lines into the house as the crews from Ladder 632 and 636 laddered, searched and vented the home. All of the occupants
were able to exit the house uninjured and had all but one of the numerous pets that included dogs, cats and rabbits out of the house as well. The fire was brought under control within an hour with no reported injuries but the house suffered substantial damage. During overhaul the missing pet, a cat, was found unharmed. Halesite Douses Dryer Fire The Halesite Fire Department was called to extinguish a fire at a home on Chuck Hollow Court, on July 5, 2014. The fire began in a clothes dryer and extended to the laundry room. Nearly 40 firefighters using five pieces of apparatus had the blaze controlled within a half hour. The fire was contained to the laundry room with smoke damage throughout the home. Huntington assisted with an additional engine to the scene, with a Centerport crew on standby. Units were under the command of Halesite Chief Dan McConnell, and Assistant Chiefs Greg Colonna and Jamie Magerle. There were no injuries reported and the Huntington Fire Marshal is investigating. Three Dix Hills Firefighters Injured Battling Blaze
The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to a fire in a detached garage on Corsa Street on July 11, 2014. Chief of Department Bill Stio arrived within seconds of the alarm and confirmed a fully involved garage fire extending to the house. The garage was just several feet away from the home, separated by a breezeway. Firefighters made an aggressive attack on the flames, limiting damage to the home. One firefighter experienced chest pains and was transported to Huntington Hospital. Another firefighter suffered second-degree
burns and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital. The third firefighter was treated at the scene for a shoulder injury. Both firefighters were later released from the hospitals. One resident safely evacuated the home uninjured. Nearly 50 firefighters battled the blaze with five pieces of apparatus. Dix Hills Rescue Squad crews provided EMS support with two ambulances and a rehab unit. Fire Police were also on the scene for traffic control. Deer Park assisted with an RIT, while Greenlawn and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps provided stand by coverage at Dix Hills head-
quarters. The fire was controlled within a half-hour, under the command of Chief Bill Stio and operations support by Assistant Chiefs Robert Fling, Tom Napolitano and Alan Berkowitz. The blaze destroyed the garage and its contents, with minor damage to the home. Huntington Responds to Another Village Blaze
The Huntington Fire Department responded to another fire in Huntington Village early on August 3, 2014, on Wall Street between Main and Gerard Streets. The fire started in a void between two buildings and spread up the side and into the basement of Cafe Buenos Aires. About 15 residents were safely evacuated from apartments on two floors above the cafe. The restaurant sustained smoke and water damage, with minimal damage to the basement. The adjacent Dunkin' Donuts also had smoke damage. Fifty firefighters responded to the alarm with five pieces of apparatus, and had the fire controlled within 45 minutes. Cold Spring Harbor assisted with RIT, while a Halesite engine on stood by at Huntington’s quarters. Fireground command was led by Huntington Chief Robert Berry, with the support of Deputy Chiefs Jesse Cukro, Rob Conroy and Brian Keane. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington Fire Marshal. House, Boat Fire in Seaford
On August 7, 2014, the Seaford Fire Department was alerted to a house fire on Smith Street in Seaford. The first unit on the scene reported the back of the house fully involved. All occupants escaped safely. Seaford Chief Paul Lochner requested mutual aid to the scene from Wantagh, Massapequa and North Massapequa. During
the course of the fire a boat was ignited by the flames and drifted in the canal. Massapequa firefighters on the Massapequa side of the canal were able to extinguish the boat fire before it caused any problems. Watermill Residence Burns
On July 29, 2014, the Southampton Fire Department was dispatched to Seven Ponds Road in Watermill for a structure fire. The first unit arriving advised that the residence was fully engulfed. Crews quickly started an exterior attack. The heat from the fire was so intense that the initial units reported blistering heat approx 70 feet from the residence. Chief Dennis Roy called North Sea, Hampton Bays, Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor for mutual aid. A five-inch hose was stretched over 1500 feet to supply the apparatus. Southampton Volunteer Ambulance, Southampton Village Ambulance and Hampton Bays Ambulance were all on scene. Floral Park Garage Fire
The Floral Park Fire Department responded to the report of a garage fire on July 30, 2014. Units arriving at the Aspen Street home found a fully engulfed, detached garage with some radiant heat extension to the nearby home. The Nassau County Hazardous Materials Unit was called to the scene due to the possible contents of the garage. Shed Fire in Setauket On July 24, 2014, the Setauket Fire Department was alerted for a residential structure fire on Mills Lane off Gnarled Hollow Road. Reports indicated a fully involved shed fire close to the home. Upon arrival of Setauket 3rd Assistant Chief Paul Rodier, he encountered heavy fire which was so intense it eventually spread to a nearby generator and then the home. All occupants safely evacuated. Assistance was requested from Port Jefferson, Centereach, Stony Brook, Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance and Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance. Suffolk Police Department requested the arson squad to respond. The Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal’s office was also on scene shortly after the fire was extinguished. 1 FF Injured at Islip Terrace Fire
Early on July 17, 2014, the Islip Terrace Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire on Audwin Drive. Chief Frank Cuoco was the first on scene. Engine 3-6-3 contained the fire to the kitchen. There was smoke and water damage throughout. Islip responded on a mutual aid with their FAST unit, Central Islip stood

Collyer’s Conditions at Smithtown Fire
The Smithtown Fire Department responded to an early morning house fire on Villa Lane on July 19, 2014. Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with a basement fire. All occupants evacuated, but one suffered from smoke inhalation. One firefighter was transported to Saint Catherine’s Hospital. It took an hour to bring the fire

House Fire in West Babylon
On July 22, 2014, the West Babylon Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Newkirt Avenue. Second Assistant Chief Schumann arrived to fire showing from the second floor on the exposure four side. Engine 1-93 was first due followed by Heavy Rescue 1-9-15 and second-due Engine 1-9-2 which picked up a hydrant and supplied 1-9-3. Crews stretched two lines and knocked down the fire in about 25 minutes, with one firefighter suffering minor injuries. Brush or Boat Fire? Firefighters from the Port Jefferson Fire Department responded to a reported brush fire while on standby for the Terryville Fire Department on July 26, 2014. The fire was at the rear of Comsewogue High School on North Bicycle Path. Upon arrival a heavy column of black smoke was visible to the rear of the complex. Upon further investigation, it was determined that an abandoned boat was burning in the woods. Chief Stumpf immediately requested assistance from Port Jefferson and Terryville for brush trucks. School Bus Fire in Wantagh The Wantagh Fire Department, under the command of 2nd Assistant Chief Joe Gross, responded to a mini-school bus fire on July 11, 2014, at the intersection of Wilmart Place and Jones Avenue. The bus was fully engulfed upon the arrival of the fire units and the bus driver and all occupants had exited the vehicle safely. Lucky Motorist in Bay Shore On June 16, 2014, the Bay Shore Fire Department and Bay Shore-Brightwaters Ambulance Corps responded to a single-car accident on the eastbound Southern State Parkway to the northbound Sagtikos Parkway. An elderly driver ran off the road and crashed into the median causing the car to burst into flames. Passing motorists, off-duty Sheriff Colleen Thompson; her father, Chief of Head of the Harbor Police Department Martin Thompson; and retired New York City Firefighter Michael Sialiano; broke out the window to the passenger side door and removed the man from the vehicle. Engine 3-1-1 use one line to extinguish the fire in about 15 minutes, with the crews of Engine 3-1-6 and Heavy Rescue 31-8. Tech Rescue Work in E. Farmingdale
On June 23, 2014, the East Farmingdale Fire Company alerted for a technical rescue at St. Charles Cemetery on Wellwood Avenue for a worker who had fallen into an open grave. First Assistant Chief Wisz was in charge of the scene and requested West Babylon Technical Rescue Team to the scene to assist the members of East

Manhasset-Lakeville Apartment Fire
On May 21, 2014, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Companies 3 and 4 were dispatched to Overlook Avenue in Great Neck Plaza for an odor of smoke in a building. Deputy Chief Pisani (8702) arrived on scene, donned his PPE, and entered the apartment building to investigate. He was met with smoke on the second floor hallway and located a fire burning within the walls. Engine 8735 arrived and immediately stretched a 1-他 inch line to the second floor. Ladder 8743 sent members to the fire apartment and floor above to open up the walls and check for extension. The crew
from Rescue 8730 also performed searches and opened up the walls in the adjoining apartment and the floor below. The crews from Engine 8758 and Tower Ladder 8744 vented the bulkhead, roof and hallways which had elevated levels of carbon monoxide. All searches throughout the building were negative and there was minimal extension. Car Fire in N. Amityville The North Amityville Fire Company responded to Sunrise Highway and Court Street on June 5, 2014, for a reported vehicle fire. Second Assistant Chief Collins arrived, followed by 3rd Assistant Chief B. Benloss and 1st Assistant Chief Harley and found a bread delivery van on the westbound shoulder of the highway. The driver was able to exit the vehicle without injury after noticing the fire. Engine 1-7-1, Heavy Rescue 1-7-5 and Ambulance 1-7-7 responded. Baldwin MVA/Fire Just after midnight on June 5, 2014, the Baldwin Fire Department was alerted for an MVA with car fire on Merrick Road near Chestnut Street. Engines 201, 203 Ladder 206 and Ambulances 2010 and 2010A responded along with the Nassau County Police and found a Nissan Altima had rear ended a parked Chevy van which hit two other vehicles. The Altima and van caught fire, and two passerbys pulled a woman from the burning car. One line was used to extinguish the vehicles. Spill in Garden City Park On June 24, 2014, a carting truck, attempting to pick up a dumpster at a Garden City Park construction site, jumped the curb and came to rest inside the playground area of the Garden City Park School on Central Avenue. No one was injured but the truck ruptured a fuel saddle tank which began to leak onto the grounds. 2 Injured in Wantagh MVA Recently, Wantagh firefighters responded to a two-car accident at the intersection of Wantagh Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue in Wantagh. MVA in Melville On June 8, 2014, the Melville Fire Department responded to an MVA on Old Country Road and Meadow Lane. Upon arriving, it was found that a Porsche SUV was against a tree covered by broken PVC fencing and branches. Police said that the male driver and his three-year old daughter were traveling eastbound, when the girl distracted the father who lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the lane, crashed through some fencing and into a tree. 1 Injured in N. Babylon MVA On June 21, 2014, the North Babylon Fire Company was alerted for an MVA with overturn and entrapment on the eastbound service road of Sunrise Highway at Route 231. A Jeep that fled the scene struck several vehicles causing one, a Buick sedan, to roll onto its roof trapping the driver. The crews from Rescue 1-8-15 and Ladder 1-8-6 used multiple spreaders and cutters to remove the driver’s side doors and B post in about 15 minutes. Jeep Into Jeep Into House in Hicksville
On June 23, 2014, the Hicksville Fire Department was alerted for an MVA with a reported car into house at Ball Park and Blueberry Lanes. First arriving units found a two-car accident (both Jeeps) that sent one through a fence, a shed and into the rear of the house, crashing into the dining room and causing one occupant to be trapped on the second floor. Melville Responds to Head-on
The Melville Fire Department responded to a head-on collision occurring on Wolf Hill Road near Saxon Street on June 12, 2014. Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were transported to Huntington Hospital by the Melville Rescue Squad. About 30 firefighters and emergency medical personnel were on the scene. 3 Injured in Bohemia MVA On June 23, 2014, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for an MVA at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Highway and Johnson Avenue. Upon arrival, Chief Andersen found three vehicles involved, with two victims pinned. Rescue 8 and 10 along with Engines 1 and 7 cut the roof from the vehicle to extricate the victims. Huntington Manor Heavy Rescue The Huntington Manor Fire Department was activated for a MVA heavy rescue on Wyoming Drive near Oregon Drive in Huntington Station, shortly before midnight on June 20, 2014. Firefighters arrived to find an Acura SUV with the driver trapped. Under the command of Chief Fred Steenson, Jr., firefighters used hydraulic tools to pry open the driver’s side door and remove him. The Acura struck a parked MercedesBenz SUV and rolled over before landing upright. About 25 firefighters were on the scene with two heavy rescue trucks and an engine. Chief Steenson was assisted by Chiefs Frank McQuade and Mike DePasquale. MVA in Medford On July 5, 2014, the Medford Fire Department received a call for n MVA at the entrance to Sam’s Club on Horseblock Road. Medford Ambulance was also dispatched. Suffolk County Police were on scene and blocked off the area for fire and rescue. Medford secured the vehicle and spread absorbent for fluids. Hempstead MVA A female driver suffered an apparent medical emergency and lost control of her vehicle and smashed into two parked cars on Hempstead Turnpike near Broadway in West Hempstead on July 7, 2014. 3 Injured in N. Amityville Head-on On July 2, 2014, the North Amityville Fire Company was alerted for an MVA with reported entrapment at Brefni Street and Great Neck Road. Units arrived to find a two-car head-on collision with one driver trapped. The crews from Heavy Rescue 1-7-5 and Engine 1-7-1 using hydraulic tools extricated the driver in about 15 minutes. Amityville MVA On July 1, 2014, the Amityville Fire Department was alerted for an MVA at Railroad Avenue and Broadway (Route 110). A Jeep Grand Cherokee had collided with a Saturn sedan sending the Saturn off the road with the driver trapped. The crew from Engine 1-1-2 stretched a precautionary line while the crew from Heavy Rescue 1-1-15 put hydraulic tools into operation to remove the driver’s door and extricate the driver in about 10 minutes. Once removed the driver of the Saturn and one person from the Jeep were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Ambulances 1-1-11 and 1-1-12. Hicksville MVA The Nassau County Police and Hicksville Fire Department responded to an auto accident on North Broadway in Hicksville on July 7, 2014. A vehicle traveling northbound apparently lost control striking two other autos then overturning. The driver of the overturned auto was transported in Nassau County Police ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center suffering several non-life threatening injuries. 1 Injured in Holtsville Overturn On August 31, 2014, the Holtsville Fire Department was activated for a motor vehicle accident on the southbound side of North Ocean Avenue. Assistant Chief Mike Escue was the first on scene and confirmed a heavy rescue. The driver was heading south on North Ocean Avenue when he lost control of his Porshe SUV taking out one utility pole, then overturning the vehicle onto the lawn of a business. Two passengers were self extricated, the driver was cut out of the SUV by Holtsville firefighters with assistance from Suffolk County Police ESU. Community Ambulance Makes Cherry Grove Save On July 16, 2014, Community Ambulance ALS first responders were dispatched to a male experiencing chest pains at a Cherry Grove doctor’s office. EMS was immediately requested due to the severity of the patient’s condition. Jennifer Hartmann, a Critical Care EMT, arrived on the scene within two minutes. The patient was packaged and transported by the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau. Jennifer cared for the patient for the trip across the Great South Bay and alerted the emergency room of the patient’s condition. Tough Job at Farmingdale Head-On On July 10, 2014, the East Farmingdale Fire Company was alerted for an MVA with entrapment on the westbound Southern State Parkway west of Route 109. First Assistant Chief Wisz confirmed that the driver of a Nissan Maxima was heavily pinned after hitting a tree head on. Chief of Department Sherback arrived and requested a medevac as firefighters began the extrication. Crews from Engine 1-5-1 Rescue, Engine 1-5-3 and Heavy Rescue 1-5-4 put multiple hydraulic tools into operation to remove three doors and the roof of the car, then displaced the dashboard. Ejection at Farmingville MVA On July 20, 2014, the Farmingville Fire Department was activated for a motor vehicle accident with reported ejection at the intersection of Horseblock Road and Old Medford Avenue. Hydrant Down in Copiague On July 15, 2014, the Copiague Fire Department responded to a two-car accident at Strongs Road and Montauk Highway. A Mazda 3 was clipped by a vehicle that fled the scene, causing the Mazda to take out a fire hydrant. Engine 1-3-9, Heavy Rescue 1-3-3 and Ambulance 1-3-27 responded under command of Third Assistant Chief Rosenberg. The crew from 1-3-3 used air bags to lift the Mazda and removed the hydrant from under the car. Car Rolls at Republic Airport The driver of a Lexus sedan was injured in a singlecar accident on July 16, 2014, on New Highway in East Farmingdale. The vehicle went off the road and overturned multiple times through a Republic Airport fence. Republic Crash Rescue 3 and the East Farmingdale Fire Company responded with Rescue Engine 1-5-3, Heavy Rescue 1-5-4 and Ambulance 15-8. Why We Have Station Coverage On July 19, 2014, the West Babylon Fire Department was out of service and being covered by Amityville Engine 1-1-2 and West Babylon’s EMTs. They responded to an accident with an overturn on Little East Neck Road and 9th Street. The driver of a Subaru Forrester hit a parked Chevy Impala and overturned. On June 3, 2014, the North Massapequa Fire Department was alerted for an MVA with reported car into a building on Hicksville Road. The driver jumped the curb and struck the front of the building breaking two windows and then continued traveling down the sidewalk striking a pillar. Engine 663, Ambulances 667 and 668 responded along with Second Assistant Chief Pesale and Nassau County Police. Dispatcher Fitzgerald Retires
June 23, 2014, marked the last day on the air of Nassau County Fire Communications Dispatcher #20 Robert A. Fitzgerald. After over 30 years working at Firecom the senior man is now retired. Robert, well respected by his peers, was a knowledgeable and calm voice that was always welcome to the responding units he dispatched. Starting his career in the fire service in 1974 as a volunteer with the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department Robert rose through the ranks serving as Chief of Department from 1991-1992. Firehouse Kitchen By Firefighter Ray Cooney It was a beautiful, chilly morning when the Firehouse Kitchen crew and I made a push to Somerset, New Jersey, to cook with father and son team, Alan and Alan Lantanzio, Jr. We were here to make Alan senior's "Chicken Jambalaya" and Alan junior's really garlicky "Garlic Bread". Somerset, New Jersey is a short ride from Manhattan. We were cooking in the East Franklin part of Somerset, a beautiful little suburb. When I arrived at East Franklin Fire Department, there was a memorial statue honoring one of their fallen. I decided to open the show in front of the memorial, thereby informing America about Firefighter Kevin Apuzzio, who died in the line of duty. Firefighter Apuzzio was trying to save the resident of a house fire when the first floor collapsed into the basement. Both Firefighter Apuzzio and the resident did not survive. The reason I decided to open the show with this story was not only due to the magnificent nature of the statue, but to remind all that firefighting is not just about the meals and brotherhood. It is also is about the possible risk of a firefighter's life while trying to help others. As I've said in many shows, when the job is good, it's good, but when it's bad, it's very bad. With that being said, let's get down to cooking. Firefighter Lantanzio, Sr., is larger than life. We talked about how jambalaya is a great firehouse meal because it feeds the masses. As we were cooking, I noticed that Alan junior was quiet and
reserved - just watching - and I decided to include him in the conversation. Well, this quiet son came alive. First I asked young Alan why he became a firefighter. He said, "Because East Franklin needs at least one good looking Lantanzio in the fire department." Alan senior smirked and that's how the rest of the show went. Father and son back and forth at each other while making great food. I tasted the food in the rec-room with other members of the Lantanzio family and a bunch of East Franklin Firemen. It became a little bit of a contest as to what was better - the jambalaya or the garlicky garlic bread (soaked in butter!!). It was too close to call, so I had a solution. I dipped the garlic bread into the jambalaya and magic! The East Franklin Fire Department and Lantanzio family made me feel right at home. I am looking forward to cooking there again. Somerset, NJ Chicken & Chorizo Jambalaya Ingredients: 3 lb. chicken breast cut into 2" pieces 1 lb. chorizo, diced 2 cups green pepper 2 cups parsley, chopped ½ cup green onion, chopped ½ cup celery, diced 1 cup sweet onion, diced 2 garlic clovers, sliced (1) 15 oz. can of tomato sauce 5 cups of rice 10 cups of water Salt Pepper Cayenne 10 quart sauce pan Directions: • Add oil to bottom pan under a medium high heat • Add chorizo & cook about 5 minutes • Add chicken, stir together with chorizo for about 10 minutes • Add pepper, onion, green onion, parsley and garlic • Stir and cook until onions are tender • Add rice, tomato sauce. Blend together until sauce boils • Add water, salt, pepper, and cayenne. Stir together until water is no longer on top of mixture • Lower heat to simmer. Put on lid and simmer for 45 minutes. Patchogue Vanguards Celebrate 100 Years
In 1914, the Patchogue Vanguard Hose Company formed a tournament drill team.The team was nicknamed the “Forty Theives.� Throughout the years, the team was highlighted in two television commercials and an appearance on Wide World of Sports. The team won seven New York State Championships. Their crowning achievement was their 27 sanctioned motorized drill victories in a row. The streak was recognized by the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame and resulted in the team being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004. The Vanguards have had tragedy, a rebirth, years when nothing seemed to go right, years where nothing went wrong, and controversy. They were loved and less-than-loved. Yet, throughout their existence, three words exemplified them: Spirit, Skill and Tenacity. At their recent celebration, heroes from the past were honored. Jake Parris, the man who gave his heart, soul and life to the team, was remembered along with numerous other team members. To the team, Jake was the Forty Thieves. Dix Hills FD Saves Man at Movie Theater Crews Save Another Man the Next Day The Dix Hills Fire Department successfully revived a man in cardiac arrest at the Elwood Cinemas on Jericho Turnpike on July 5, 2014. The call for assistance came in at 2037 as Third Assistant Chief Alan Berkowitz, Advanced EMT-CC, was on his way out to dinner and sitting at the traffic light at Elwood Road and Jericho Turnpike, just opposite the theater. Chief Berkowitz arrived on the scene in 40 seconds, and found a 67-year-old male laying in the aisle in respiratory arrest. Within seconds, the patient lost his pulse and went into cardiac arrest. Chief Berkowitz initiated CPR and hooked the patient up to his defibrillator as Dix Hills Fire District Paramedic Bob Cavalieri arrived on the scene. The patient was given one shock from the
defibrillator and both Berkowitz and Cavalieri continued with CPR. Soon after, the man’s blood pressure and pulse came up as he started breathing on his own. As Cavalieri said, “we got a pulse now!” the crowd of about 100 people in the theater began clapping and cheering, said Chief Bill Stio who arrived on the scene to witness the save. Two civilians and two Suffolk County Police officers assisted the Dix Hills Rescue crew. Paramedic Scott DiPino, Captain of the Dix Hills Rescue Squad, continued the patient care in the ambulance en route to Huntington Hospital with a police escort. The man was reported to be in stable condition in the hospital’s ICU. On, July 6, 2014, the Dix Hills Fire
Department Rescue Squad saved another life. Rescuers responded to a call for a 92-year-old man who was choking on food and went into cardiac Aarest at a residence. Dix Hills Fire District Paramedics Bob Cavalieri and Tony Hunt, together with Advanced EMT-CC Eytan Pick arrived on the scene and were able to clear the man’s airway and restore his pulse and blood pressure. Suffolk Police were also on the scene assisting. The patient was transported to Huntington Hospital by Dix Hills Rescue Squad ambulance. Crews were under the command of Assistant Chiefs Robert Fling and Tom Napolitano. - Fire News story and photos by Steve Silverman
