Purpose of FIA Councils The bea ng heart of the FIA is its Councils and Working Groups. It is where all our technical prowess and knowledge is generated and formed into industry leading guidance and training. The FIA is governed by eight elected Councils, each represen ng a key sector of the fire safety industry. Each Council focuses on its sector’s unique challenges and priori es, whether that’s fire detec on and alarms, ex nguishing systems, emergency ligh ng, or service and maintenance. These Councils don’t just debate issues, they ac vely shape the standards, codes of prac ce, and training that set the benchmark for the wider fire industry.
Fire DetecƟon & Alarm Council
FRES Council
The Fire Detec on & Alarm Council is the hub for developers and installers of detec on and alarm systems. It leads on the interpreta on and revision of BS 5839-1, EN 54 and related technical codes, hosts device-performance trials, and issues Bulle ns on topics like wireless technology, mul -sensor detectors and system reliability. By pooling field data and lab insights, the Council ensures detec on standards keep pace with emerging hazards and installa on techniques.
The Fire & Rescue Equipment Suppliers (FRES) Council brings together manufacturers and suppliers of goods and services used by Fire & Rescue Services, from hydraulic cu ng tools and thermal imaging cameras to specialist rescue kits. Members debate opera onal feedback from front-line crews, develop Best Prac ce Guides for equipment selec on and maintenance, and liaise with na onal agencies to ensure new products meet the evolving needs of rescue teams. By coordina ng product trials and sharing incident data, the FRES Council helps shape procurement standards and drives innova on in life-saving technology.
Services Council The Services Council unites installers, designers, commissioners and maintainers of fire-protec on systems, ranging from sprinklers and ex nguishers to emergency ligh ng and fire doors. It develops templates for technical reports, issues guidance on commissioning protocols and supports the FIA Technical Audit Portal (TAP). Members contribute to updates of EN 15004 (gaseous systems), BS 5306-0 (foam systems) and other standards, organise joint fire-tes ng programmes and produce guidance on environmental impact, installa on best prac ce and agent compa bility.
The Fire Engineering Council champions performance-based fire-safety design and consultancy. Its members dra Best Prac ce Guides on computa onal fluid dynamics (CFD), structural fire safety and human behaviour modelling, peerreview complex project proposals and represent the industry on CEN/ISO engineering commi ees. The aim is to provide as many different opportuni es and pla orms, for the broadest number of member companies as possible. These events focus on the commercial growth of FIA member companies and educa onal opportuni es for both the fire industry and end-users. FIM Expo
AGM & Annual Lunch
• The Fire Industry Manufacturers (FIM) Expo is a travelling exhibi on and conference that features many of the UK fire industry’s manufacturers and showcases the latest products and developments across a range of industry sectors. What makes FIM Expo different to many other trade exhibi ons is the informal format, regional focus, and ability to see the latest products from all the major fire industry manufacturers in one place. In recent years we have visited; Belfast, Cardiff, No ngham, Portsmouth and Harrogate.
• The FIA AGM and Annual Lunch is the highlight event in the fire safety calendar. This is the only event to find all the most influen al individuals in the UK fire industry under one roof and is unmatched when it comes to networking. Over the years the event has con nued to grow, 2024 saw over 560 guests come together for a fantas c day.
• The exhibi on coincides with an FIA conference enabling a endees to meet all our exhibitors as well as gain valuable knowledge and insight from influen al figures in the industry. • FIM Expo offers a wonderful opportunity to meet and network with industry leaders. On the day, delegates can place orders with our exhibitors and gain valuable informa on about industry-leading products. • Engage in in-depth discussions with a diverse range of fire industry stakeholders specifically, from installa on and maintenance companies as well as end users. With the FIA, you can expand your knowledge and network.

• The event combines our Annual General Mee ng, where members come together to hear about the achievements of the associa on over the last 12 months and what we have planned for the future. Our Annual Lunch consists of a three-course meal, followed by our Young Technician of the Year and Life me Achievement Awards, as well as entertainment.
Overseas Events – The FIA Fire Safety Summit Series The FIA is commi ed to suppor ng the ac vi es of its expor ng member companies. Lead by the Export Council, the FIA targets overseas opportuni es in order to provide its members with a range of op ons and security when it comes to growing the export side of their business.
Below are some examples from recent years. Cyprus 2023 In 2023 we kickstarted the Fire Safety Summit series with the first event in Cyprus, with the inten on of bringing the industry together and establishing FIA Cyprus.
Ireland 2024 The FIA hosted a Fire Safety Summit at Dublin’s landmark Conven on Centre. Bringing together over 145 delegates from across the UK and Ireland, the event showcased the latest fire safety innova ons from leading manufacturers.
Gibraltar 2025 The FIA Fire Safety Summit Series took us to Gibraltar, a growing construc on and fire safety market. A ended by over 120 delegates, the summit focused on knowledge sharing, collabora on and strengthening fire safety prac ces.
FIA Charity Padel Tournament The FIA’s inaugural Charity Padel Tournament brought together members, partners and industry colleagues for a day of compe on, networking and fundraising in support of the Children’s Burns Trust. Hosted at Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club, the event raised over £2,000 for the charity, with Fire Safety Event crowned the inaugural champions. Following its success, the tournament is set to become an annual fixture in the FIA calendar. Elmdene shared their thoughts on the day:

InternaƟonal Events FinnSec 2025 The FIA made its debut at FinnSec 2025 in Helsinki, providing a shared exhibiƟon stand for UK member companies to showcase their products to the Nordic market. The event strengthened relaƟonships, promoted UK fire safety experƟse and created valuable opportuniƟes to engage with key industry decision-makers across Northern Europe.
FSE Asia - Singapore 2025 The inaugural Fire Safety Event Asia in Singapore saw the FIA partnered with the BSIA to host a UK Pavilion. Four leading UK manufacturers showcased Bri sh innova on to buyers from across the Asia-Pacific region, genera ng strong engagement and valuable export opportuni es. Following the event’s success, the FIA will return with a UK Pavilion at Fire Safety Event Asia 2026, con nuing to support members in expanding their presence across the region.

Hochiki Europe Protects Students Eaton’s flexible soluƟons from False Alarms selected for SBS’s new smart Two eight-storey student accommoda on developments in logisƟcs hub Frankfurt and Munich, each housing 239 residents, were built under The Flag brand to provide smart, flexible city living. Mee ng the complex safety requirements of these sites meant complying with EN 54 standards and ensuring high reliability to protect residents and minimise false alarms. To achieve this, 800 intelligent mul -sensor detectors were installed, programmed to only trigger alarms when both smoke and heat reach set levels, reducing unnecessary evacua ons. Similarly, the chosen base sounders include smart features like auto shutdown to help prevent noise pollu on common in large residen al buildings.

An addi onal repeater panel was installed in the opera ng offices for enhanced safety. According to CEO Gianni Stor , the implementa on was completed faster than expected, enabling SBS to surpass previous opera onal goals.
