As someone that nominates the "Legally Blonde" movie every year to be included in the Library of Congress National Film Registry this was a dream show to direct. I have always loved working with girly media and I was so honored when I was offered the chance to direct a piece of media that celebrates all forms of femineity and girlhood. I think that a lot of media that is made with women and girls as the target audience is viewed as too "silly" or too "flashy" to be scene as deep or meaningful which has always saddened me because "Chick Flicks" have always been very culturally important, and that is exactly what Legally Blonde is about and I find that such a special thing to be able to share with our actors.
I was also so so lucky to be blessed with an amazing group of kids who were up for any challenge. I have always thought that children and teenagers are so much more capable than a lot of people give them credit for, they can not only learn the materials of the show but analyze it and what it means and figure out the acting techniques to bring it to the stage. I gave them a lot of responsibilities and they would still ask, "can we run that song one more time?", "Can I do anything else to help?" I would always brag to my family and classmates about having this group of kids who were so engaged with the show and how beautiful that was.
Of course I couldn't have done this without my amazing team who helped me get this show "Whipped into Shape". Sophia, our stage manager, who has always been such a reliable and talented person to be on my team. Briana, our music director, who always goes the extra mile when it comes to vocal technique and character analysis. Tess, our choreographer, who makes every song in this show feel so exciting and always matches the vibes perfectly, they are also one of our costumers along with Mathew. Tess and Mathew were so up for the challenge when it came to finding the perfect outfits for each and every character! And of course it goes without saying my gratitude to our tech team, Luka, who designed our amazing lighting, and Mike who has the enormous job of running our microphones and sound.
