Home-Grown Innovation
Rooted in the rich legacy of American manufacturing, Fireclay Tile was founded in California in 1986 on the premise of making tile a better way, merging traditional craftsmanship with forward-thinking innovation. Since our inception, we’ve been reinventing, redefining, and radicalizing the industry.
Today we continue to stand proudly on our founding principles as a certified Benefit Corporation (B Corp). We’re committed to sustainable sourcing and production practices, the well-being of our employees, and giving back to our communities—all while putting our customers first.

We feel a deep responsibility to make tile in a way that takes care of our people and our planet. Every Fireclay tile you order is handcrafted with this ethos, adding to the mosaic of a better, more sustainable world.

Our Factories
As many American tile manufacturers have taken production overseas (75% of tile consumed in the US is imported), we’re strengthening the rich tradition of USA-made tile. Choosing to be a fully integrated business allows us direct visibility into the manufacturing and distribution of our products and our true social and environmental footprint.

There’s no place like home. From incorporating domestically-sourced materials to investing in the next generation of American Tile Makers, we’re proud to be Made in the USA.

Aromas, CA

California Roots
Nestled among the rolling hills of the Central Coast, our original factory is a testament to sustainable, Americanmade craftsmanship. Within the walls of these buildings, our skilled artisans meticulously craft our Original Ceramic Tile from domestically sourced raw materials along with our Handpainted Tile, Sheeted Mosaics, and Glazed Thin Brick.
The Aromas Factory implements 100% renewable electricity, glaze recycling, an innovative water reclamation system, and offsets carbon emissions from all parts of our operation, including sourcing and freight, to ensure that our production is as environmentally responsible as it is artistically inspired.
Spokane, WA
Pacific Northwest Growth
In 2022, we deepened our commitment to the legacy of American manufacturing with the acquisition of Quarry Tile, a 60-year-old tile factory in Spokane, Washington. This acquisition enables us to produce more tile at a larger scale, reduce emissions through increased efficiencies, cut lead times, expand our in-stock options, and distinguish ourselves from other suppliers by introducing sustainable handmade tile into more spaces than ever before.
Boasting extreme volume capabilities, this factory produces our budget-friendly Essentials and Natural Press Tile. We were also able to move manufacturing of our high-quality Glass Tile to Spokane, ensuring that 100% of our products are made in the USA.
We’re Proud to Be a B Corp
We make it our business to do good. Since 2014, B Corp Certification has ensured alignment with stakeholders, conveyed our values to customers, and nurtured holistic accountability.

B Corp Certification:
The What, How, and Why
How do you achieve the exact number for your B Corp certification and why is it so specific? What varies from each year and if your number went down why did it go down?
Certification involves completing the B Impact Assessment, reviewed by the B Lab committee. Every 2-3 years recertification occurs. From 2014 to 2023, Fireclay’s score has risen progressively from 80.3 to 91.5, then to 115.4, and it currently stands at 127.7. Specific scoring is a product of the Assessment’s hundreds of questions, each with varying point values.
Who, apart from your CEO, is involved in this process, and does your company have awareness of when this process will take place?
A team of people takes part in our certification process, including representatives from our People, Accounting, Production and Marketing teams. We communicate our B Corp certification to our company and Board of Directors through our annual Impact Report and on our website.
Do your employees undergo company training, and if so, is it on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis?
Yes. Certain teams are trained in areas that make sense for their department, and our annual Impact Report is provided to everyone. During our new hire onboarding, new Teammates are trained on B Corps and we teach many Teammates about the Business of Fireclay through a 4-hour class.
What’s the rationale for choosing B Corp certification over another certification?
B Corp is the most well-rounded, holistic certification on the market, inclusive of corporate governance, employee welfare, environmental stewardship, community involvement, and benefits to our customers.
In which areas did you not pass the certification requirements, and what efforts are you making to enhance your performance in those areas?
B Corp certification is based on achieving more than 80 total points out of 200, so there aren’t necessarily areas we didn’t pass but with a score of 127.7 we do have opportunities for improvement.
We’re working to improve benefits and feedback to our Teammates, introducing more rigor and consistency around our environmental initiatives, and improving our community support. For example, in the past only 30% of Teammates took advantage of their paid volunteer day. This year we closed the company for a Fireclay Tile Day of Service to get as close to 100% participation as possible.
Always Improving
Our B Corp score has steadily increased with each recertification, currently ranking us in the top 10% of B Corps worldwide—and we aren’t stopping.

Company History
We’ve accomplished a lot over the last 30+ years. Here are a few of our most memorable milestones.
Fireclay is started by 4 friends in San Jose, California. The goal was simple: make beautiful tile, a better way.
We move our Factory to its current home in Aromas, CA and become the first tile company to introduce 100% lead-free glazes.
We begin making recycled clay that incorporates granite dust from a local quarry and glass from post-consumer bottles.
We enter the modern era and start using technology for more efficient production while shrinking lead times and waste.
We purchase Sandhill Glass Tile and start our journey into glass tile manufacturing and selling.
We make the world’s first 100% postconsumer glass tile using recycled CRT Glass (glass from old TVs and computer monitors).
We purchase Kibak Tile to expand our Handpainted offering.
Our first showroom opens in San Francisco and we begin selling directly to homeowners and designers, in-store and online.
We become the first Certified B Corp tile company.
We begin our partnership with the NPCA by donating 1% of Brick sales to preserving US National Parks.
Our Quick Ship program launches, featuring popular sizes and colors, ready to ship in 5 days or less.

Fireclay becomes Teammate Owned and offers 30% of our company’s ownership to our Teammates.
We become Climate Neutral Certified. We start our Aromas, CA factory expansion. We begin working with the Architects Foundation to create a scholarship for Black women pursuing architecture.
We open our Berkeley Showroom and make meaningful partnerships with Allies in Arts to support LGBTQIA+ artists.
Fireclay acquires Quarry Tile of Spokane, Washington, introducing budget-friendly tile manufactured via an efficient, single-fired natural press method.
We complete an expansion to our California Factory for a total of 80,000 sqft.
We bring Glass Tile manufacturing in-house to our Washington Factory, ensuring 100% of our products are made in the USA with complete visibility into our environmental footprint.
We open six new showrooms across the US. We acquire Heritage Marble & Tile, one of the best tile installation teams in the country, and introduce Fireclay Tile Installation services in select markets.

Making tile is about more than just playing with color. It’s about the earth. We dig our hands into the dirt and feel a connection to our history and all the possibilities the future holds.

With over $2 million in giving, we make it our business to do good. From supporting our local communities to reducing our environmental impact, every tile we make is a chance for us to have a positive impact on our world. Together, we can be the change we seek.
Fireclay Gives

PRODUCT DONATIONS
In 2019, we expanded the Pledge One Percent pledge to include donating 1% of the square feet of tile we produce to non-profit organizations. To date, we’ve provided over 59,000 square feet of tile totaling $1,303,049 in value to those in need including Detroit Prep (above).

DAY OF SERVICE
We introduced the tradition of closing the company for our annual Fireclay Tile Day of Service in 2023. On this day, team members join forces with local organizations, contributing our time and efforts to be a “Force for Good” in our communities and make an impact beyond tile.
Mindful Manufacturing
At Fireclay Tile, we’re dedicated to doing sustainable manufacturing right.

How It’s Made: Original Ceramic
Our Original Ceramic Tile is crafted via the extrusion method in our California Factory from high-quality, domestically sourced raw materials with care and intention at every step.
CLAY MIXING
Fireclay’s signature recycled clay body is hand-mixed in-house using recaptured water, local granite fines and post-industrial waste from our own manufacturing process.
EXTRUDING
Wet clay is extruded into a flat sheet or “ribbon” of clay by mechanically pushing the freshly mixed clay through a metal die.
BISQUE FIRING
Dried clay is fired in our roller hearth kiln to create bisque tiles ready for glazing. Bisque is a once fired, but unglazed tile.
DRYING
Clay must be completely free of inherent moisture before firing. To prepare our clay for firing, we dry it at approximately 400° Fahrenheit for 12 hours.
SHAPE FORMING
Ribbons of raw clay are cut into a variety of shapes using metal dies attached to a hydraulic press. The excess clay from cutting is salvaged and mixed back into the larger batch of clay.
GLAZING
Bisque tile is glazed with housemade, hand mixed lead-free glazes. All color formulas are proprietary and developed in the Fireclay Color Lab.
FINAL FIRING
Glazed tiles are fired for a second time to melt and bond the glaze, creating one-of-a-kind tiles that bring each client’s vision to life.
PACKING
Finished tiles are inspected for quality and shipped to our customers with transportation emissions o set through trusted partners. Each Fireclay product is certified Climate Neutral.

How It’s Made: Natural Press
Our Washington Factory manufactures this beautiful and budget-friendly Ceramic Tile at high volume thanks to the efficiency of the natural press method.
CLAY MIXING
Raw materials are weighed and transported to a ball mill where water is combined and mixed for about 1,100 rotations.
STIRRING
The mixture goes to the screener and the resulting slurry goes into a stir tank.
DRYING
Drying tile in the dryer takes about 15 minutes. At this point the water content of a tile is about 2%.
DRY PRESSING
The clay droplets pass to a forming die to create tiles shapes. Anywhere from 90 to 200 bar of pressure is applied to a steel plunger to compress the material.
SPRAY DRYING
Pumps carry the clay slurry up to the Spray Dryer where 1,200° Fahrenheit hot air is introduced. The clay mixture dries forming small hollow droplets of clay as it exits the spray dryer.
GLAZING
An underglaze is applied to the dried tiles to achieve an even, white surface for bright, vibrant colors. Afterwards, a glaze curtain (vela) applies the final color layer of glaze.
FIRING
Glazed tiles travel through a kiln. Firing takes about 70 minutes depending on tile size and glaze.
QC + PACKING
Finished tiles are inspected for quality and shipped to our customers with transportation emissions o set through trusted partners. Each Fireclay product is certified Climate Neutral.

How It’s Made: Glazed Thin Brick
Glazing thin brick uses the same process we’ve been perfecting with tile for over 35 years. The thin brick body is supplied by a local brick maker and then prepared to receive glaze. All of our Brick colors are hand mixed inhouse and then applied using a spray or waterfall technique. Each Brick is then fired, permanently bonding the color to the brick body.
GLAZE MAKING
Brick is finished with hand-mixed, lead-free glazes created in-house by our Glaze Makers. 1
FIRING
The glazed Bricks are fired in a kiln at near 2,000° Fahrenheit. These fast-firing kilns take less than one hour to fire brick from start to finish. 3
2
GLAZING
Glazes are applied to Brick on a conveyor belt that glides under jets spraying the glaze in an even mist.
QC + PACKING
Our Brick is inspected for quality assurance and safely packed to ship to its final destinations with transportation emissions o set through trusted partners. Each Fireclay product is certified Climate Neutral. 4
Glazed Thin Brick
Beautiful, durable, and easy to clean, our Glazed Thin Bricks’ colorful surfaces are suitable for the smallest and largest projects on your list. Our California manufacturing partner supplies our Brick body which we then finish with our signature Fireclay palette. Choose from 20 lead-free, handmixed glazes in a wide range of colors.

Tile
Discover art that’s made for life. Crafted using time-honored techniques going back hundreds of years, every Handpainted Tile is made to order by our skilled artisans in Aromas, California.

How It’s Made: Handpainted Tile
Step into a world where craftsmanship and artistry converge, giving rise to the exquisite beauty of hand-painted cuerda seca tiles. With a history rooted in intricate traditions, each tile is a testament to the skilled hands that bring them to life. Join us on a journey through the creation of these masterpieces, where age-old techniques blend seamlessly with contemporary creativity.
PRODUCING BISQUE
Produced using the same clay body recipe as Original Ceramics, Handpainted tiles follow the same sequence of mixing, extruding, forming, drying, and bisque firing.
GLAZING
Our lead-free glazes are inlaid by hand with bulb syringes into the areas between the lines.
RECTIFYING EDGES
Using a wet saw, bisqued tiles are cut to have precise, identical edges, resulting in a uniform size.
SCREEN PRINTING
Using a traditional screen printing process a pattern is applied to the tile. The ink formula, a wax resist, ensures that the glazes remain separated during firing.
FIRING
Painted tiles are loaded into the kiln for the final glaze firing.
QC + PACKING
Finished tiles are inspected for quality and shipped to our customers with transportation emissions o set through trusted partners. Each Fireclay product is certified Climate Neutral.

Retail
Design is a form of storytelling, and today’s leading brands are seeking out and specifying premium materials to delight their customers and teams while sharing their stories of identity, values, and experience.
Shaping Brand Experience
Brick-and-mortar retailers thrive in a world of e-commerce choices because of the tactile, personal, and curated experience customers can expect. Bringing brand stories to life requires beautiful building products and design, along with a supply chain that matches the brand’s values. The strategic placement of tile can guide foot traffic, delineate zones, and accentuate key focal points within a store. Our ceramic, glass, and brick tile not only delight customers with its artistic qualities that elevate the aesthetics, ambiance, and functionality of retail spaces but also aligns seamlessly with the environmental and social values that your brand evangelists expect.

Education
Tile design is an investment in both a school and its students’ futures. Transcending aesthetics, design is a critical element that influences the learning environment, student and staff engagement, and overall experience.
School Spirit
Tile can reflect the distinct identity of educational institutions. Through the use of school colors, logos, and cultural motifs, tile patterns become a means of expressing the institution’s values and spirit. This design approach cultivates a sense of belonging and pride among both students and faculty.
Designing with responsibly-made tile aligns with the values of many educational institutions. Incorporating eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient tiling solutions, and green building practices reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility and encourages environmental awareness among students.
A Space to Thrive
From classrooms to libraries and communal areas, the selection of tile patterns, colors, and textures is carefully orchestrated to optimize natural light, acoustics, and comfort. These considerations mitigate distractions, fatigue, and discomfort, thereby facilitating a more focused and engaged learning process.
Calming colors, comfortable seating arrangements, and integration of biophilic elements like tile designs featuring natural patterns contribute to reducing stress and promoting overall wellness. Thoughtfully designed spaces that encourage relaxation and introspection positively influence students’ mental health.
Durability cannot be overlooked in educational design. Specifying high-quality building materials ensures that year after year, incoming students will enjoy the same beautifully designed space as their graduating peers.

Transportation / Civic
An airport or train station is often a traveler’s first (and last) impression of a destination. As states and municipalities bring their infrastructure up to speed, nailing that introduction is top of mind.
Cultivating a Sense of Place
In transportation hubs, durable and easy-to-maintain tiles withstand heavy foot traffic and contribute to a clean and organized atmosphere. Well-chosen colors, patterns, and textures guide travelers intuitively through these vast spaces. Design elements can delineate waiting areas, direct foot traffic, and create visual interest, enhancing both efficiency and aesthetics.
Civic buildings like libraries, museums, and government offices benefit from thoughtful tile design that aligns with the building’s purpose. The design language can reflect the cultural heritage or the institution’s values. Tiles can be used creatively to foster a sense of identity and pride among visitors. In museums, for instance, tile patterns can complement the exhibits’ themes, while in libraries, they can create cozy reading nooks or inspire a sense of curiosity.
Meeting the Moment
Along with cultural and geographic identity, civic spaces should reflect the ambitions of a community to address environmental challenges. Sustainable materials and energy-efficient tiling solutions align with the growing emphasis on environmental responsibility. Tiles can be incorporated in ways that contribute to green building certifications and reflect the commitment to sustainable practices, as well as offer a resilient material for a changing climate.

Hospitality
Whether you’re setting the stage for a carefully choreographed dining experience or creating a hotel environment you won’t find anywhere else, handmade tile leaves a lasting impression.
Immersive Design
In hospitality design, tiles are not merely functional elements but also storytelling mediums that enhance the overall narrative of a space. From creating visual impact to promoting durability, cleanliness, and sustainability, tiles are essential tools for hospitality designers seeking to craft immersive and remarkable guest environments. The tactile quality of tiles contributes to the sensory experience of guests. Textured brick tiles can evoke a sense of comfort, while glossy and matte ceramic and glass tiles can add an air of sophistication. The interplay of textures in flooring, walls, and even accents enhances the overall ambiance and mood of the space.
Finishing Touches
Tile trims, including cove bases, should seamlessly integrate with the overall design aesthetic of the hospitality space. They can be selected to complement the chosen tiles, enhancing the visual continuity and contributing to a polished, cohesive appearance.
In the pursuit of maintaining sanitary compliance, tile trims play a critical role. Cove base trims are designed to facilitate cleaning by preventing dirt, dust, and debris from accumulating in corners where walls meet the floor. By eliminating crevices and gaps at the base of walls, cove base trims prevent the accumulation of moisture and bacteria-prone areas, helping hospitality spaces meet stringent sanitary standards.
