SUMMER 2020/21

NEWSLETTER ‘A tough year, but what a great way to finish!’

TTER

2020 was a year that none of us have ever experienced before. The onset of Covid 19, coupled with its significant travel and contact restrictions, meant that the dairy industry, like so many others in Australia, became socially isolated. It was therefore with great enthusiasm, that once restrictions had lifted, Leading Edge Genetics was able to host its 11th On-Farm Presentation luncheon at the Warragul Country Club, on Friday 11th of December.

A crowd of over 120 was in attendance when the winners of five classes were announced by our judge for 2020, Mr Peter Dickson from Bacchus Marsh. Taking out the mantle of Overall Champion was the Mature Cow Class winner, in cow 6240 owned by Wilara Holsteins of Newry. Sired by Buddha, was this outstanding 5th lactation cow, whose tremendous udder and width were some of the standout features for our judge Peter Dickson. Entry numbers were again excellent, with 413 entries across 57 different breeders. he highest

s number 1 Other1.highlights were the Thompson family from Fish Creek, who were first time winners in our competition, taking out the Two Year Old Class with er number

a Samite daughter 190. The Templeton family from Tarwin also won for the first time, in the competitive Three Year Old Class with an outstanding Doorman daughter. Foote Dairies Pepper cow 4280 became the first cow to win back-to-back, taking out the newly created 4-5 Year Old Class. The Group he importance Class was won by the Williams family at Catani, with a mature age group of Guthrie daughters.

ence per ge size of is little doubt that 2020 has proved to be one of the most daunting and challenging years the modern world has ever faced. The impact of There whenCovid-19 A.I is on the economy has been unprecedented. Whilst the farming sector has not been affected as significantly as others, it too has faced its own set coming even

of unique challenges.

On behalf of the Leading Edge Genetics team, we hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and we wish you a safe, happy and healthy New Year.

ABS Best sires available in SEXCEL® to fast-track genetic gain Sales of Sexcel® have surged more than 100 per cent this calendar year as farmers choose to breed replacements from their highest genetic merit animals and join the bottom of their herd to specialised ABS Beef InFocus™ dairy-beef. Holstein Sexcel sire 29HO17706 De-Su 12128 TAILOR retained the highest breed score for udders and lifted his BPI$ to +338. He’s fast becoming a farmer favourite, which is no surprise with his mastitis resistance, and being one of a few bulls that improves rumps and dairy strength. Leading the next generation is Holstein sire 29HO19485 Bomaz EPISODE with a BPI$ of +494 and a HWI of +507. He’s 112 for Daughter Fertility, 110 for Mastitis Resistance and 111 Survival and is bred by the famous Bomaz herd. He will be available in Sexcel next year and, given his first two shipments of conventional semen have already sold out, he will be extremely popular in 2021. Possibly one of the most exciting type sires in 2020 has been 94HO19189 Morningview RADIO. Not only is RADIO a BB and A2 sire, he boasts elite Type +2.47 and Udders +2.24 and is positive for DPR. RADIO is also impressive in the Australian index, being high in the breed for Survival, Mastitis Resistance and just under +1000 litres of milk, which puts him at 360 BPI$ with elite type. Being available in Sexcel and reports of outstanding semen fertility makes ordering early important to avoid the disappointment of missing out on this very popular sire.

Australian Proof Results Holstein Proofs from Australia - Highlights A review undertaken by Datagene of the Australian Breeding Values indices has seen some changes occur to the December proof run. The abolishment of the TWI (Type Weighted Index) has seen it replaced by a list of top ranked overall type and mammary. A greater emphasis on health has seen some adjustments for those sires that are strong in those categories. Mr Super Contender from ST Australia holds the mantle as the #1 Holstein sire on BPI at 436 with a strong type score of 106. An interesting new sire who features at #2 is OCD Kingboy Rambo from WWS at 418 BPI. Unfortunately, the bull is dead with only limited semen available. A sire that did improve considerably on a relative ranking aspect is Karrmona Destined (Destination) from GAC he moved from #9 to # 3 ranked Holstein BPI sire at 386. A sire to watch for the April 2021 proof summaries is Endco Viewpoint from Semex. His Australian daughters have been a standout for the Leading Edge Genetics team in 2020. Viewpoint was a high genomic sire who featured in our 2017 Winter/Spring Genomic pack. His daughters performed extremely well in the LEG On-Farm Competition in 2020. Whilst only with limited data he is the only bull in Australia who is over 100 on chest width and greater than 111 on overall mammary.

A Powerful Genetic Duo JSHERMES and 7HO12897 SAMURI are backed by two of the most dominant cow families in the breed today. Even in this modern genomic world, great cow families are coming to the fore providing us with the best options to breed the next generation. The family behind JSHERMES, the Cookiecutter ”H’ family is producing new high-ranking bulls every index run. With its roots tracing back to the famous Snow-N Denises Dellia EX-95, members of this family have won the Holstein International magazine “Global Impact Cow of the Year” for the past 2 years running. JSHERMES dam is a VG86 Bourbon daughter, backed by VG daughters of Rubicon and Epic.

“JSHERMES delivers exactly what breeders are searching for, trouble free cows with high production, conformation and health traits. His low SCE makes him attractive for the heifers too, all while carrying the A22 & BB milk genes. The transmission of the time tested Dellia family is the foundation of 10 generation of VG EX to bring you HERMES, sure to satisfy”. Roger Turner, Jetstream Genetics Inc.

www.geneticenterprises.co.nz

SAMURI sires youthful udders, strong attachments, and exceptional mobility. With his +2.2 SCR and 99% reliability, he is a great choice for sexed semen usage to generate more high value female pregnancies! This A22 sire, now with more than 3,000 milking daughters, has steadied his position of both Type & Udder composites, positive Health and Fitness traits and has a BV of $562 Net Merit & +2702 TPI.

Hermes 3rd Dam, Lookout Pesce Epic Hue VG86-2YR

JSHERMES is a bull that ranks well on the US and Australian systems. This A22 sire has a BPI of 456 and a HWI of 462 with 107 Overall Type and 111 Daughter Fertility. In the US, he is a 2800 plus TPI sire with Type and Mammary ratings just short of 2.00 points. JSHERMES is also a great option for heifers. 7HO12897 SAMURI is from the genetic powerhouse of Oakfield Corners Dairy. He has a very interesting maternal pedigree with a double cross of the Martha Sheen / Rudy Missy family. To offset this strongly line-bred maternal pedigree, SAMURI’s sire is the unrelated sire AltaSpring. SAMURI is a great option for those looking for a little more reliability. With over 3000 daughters milking in the US, SAMURI is the perfect foil for the young hotshot, JSHERMES. Strong positive ratings for health and survival traits, backed by a nice production profile make SAMURI an easy choice. Add to this A22 and +2.2 SCR and he becomes a real “no-brainer”! JSHERMES and 7HO12897 SAMURI are a pair of bulls that can fit into almost any breeding program. With the backing of two of the breed’s best families, how could you go wrong?

His grandfather and one of the immortals of the Jersey breed in Valentino (WWS/GAC) is the #2 ranked sire at 287 with an impressive 113 on overall type. There is a number of Jersey sires to watch closely for the April 2021 proof release. These include the Navarian son Algernon from GAC at 292 from the acclaimed Broadlin herd. Other sires to perhaps watch going forward are Dazzler (ABS) at 281 and the Megatron son in Megapower at WWS at 279. Gippsland Jersey breeder Wayne Kuhne looked away from the easy options, searching for a point of difference for his Bushlea Jersey Stud. Considering the Danish Jersey’s and their genetic evaluation lead him to VJ Quintana. Preferring to blanket mate with the chosen bull was made even easier given the outcross pedigree VJ Quintana offered. During the Spring of 2020 they have been calving 2yo VJ Quintana daughters and the top two production index animals in the herd are both by VJ Quintana. The VJ Quintana’s more than meet Wayne’s expectations, defying some perceptions about the look of Danish Jersey while fulfilling every health trait. Viking Genetics have been following the daughters of VJ Quintana in Australia, with classification in multiple herds showing consistently high results. The bull has been popular for purebred and cross-bred programs with the daughters displaying consistent performance in line with his Danish proof. Udders are a feature. Wayne certainly had nothing to worry about. Viking Danish Jersey is the biggest “and best” group of heifers in the herd this year, with the most elite classifying to 87 points as a two-year-old. Look for VJ Quintana as an Australian proven sire in the 2021 ABV release. Productive, healthy, fertile cows proven to make a difference in Australian herds brave enough to consider change. Bushlea Quin Fernleaf 2 VG86, wwned by Bushlea Jerseys.

APRIL PROOF HIGHLIGHTS FROM SEMEX AUSTRALIA 0200HO10772 Endco Viewpoint was selected as a promising genomic young sire by Leading Edge Genetics in Spring 2017 and his first milking daughters in Australia have impressed breeders with their consistency, production, and outstanding udders. Demand for Fresh Sexed Semen Fresh sexed semen is a growing sector of the dairy genetics industry, with the technology being integrated within synchronisation programs for both cows and heifers. With the sex sorted semen not being frozen, and the development of semen extenders that optimise fertility shelf life for up to three days, fresh sexed semen becomes a highly accommodating option to optimise different synchronisation program approaches. Incorporating the readily accessible Sexing Technology facility at Total Livestock Genetics bull collection facility, this technology has grown considerably, with an increasing number of clients committed to fresh sexed semen due to the ongoing success rate in conception rates – optimising the opportunity to generate heifer calves for their herds. Leading Edge Genetics has been an early leader in the utilisation of this technology and, with the strong commitment in working with their client’s programs, has coordinated the management of bull nominations, sort dates and delivery requirements to insure optimum success rates. Bulls from the TLG team including the high international demand Holstein sire TLGMirand, the short gestation length Holstein sire TLGAndreas, and the new high profile Jersey sire TLGBashful, have all played a prominent role in this year’s fresh sexed semen programs offered through Leading Edge Genetics.
