‘Are conception rates with Sexed Semen drawing closer to that achieved from a conventional straw?’

The level of satisfaction amongst Australian dairy farmers using Sexed Semen (SS) is growing at a rapid rate. Recent data from the National Herd Improvement of Australia (NHIA) revealed that in 2021, 22% of all dairy semen sold was sexed. This was a lift of 7% from 2020. The reasons why farmers use SS are well documented. Historically, there has been a level of conservatism amongst many as to the potency of SS. But many farmers are now following market trends and heeding the advice of industry specialists by looking for a product that delivers more sperm per dose. Just as importantly however, is factoring in sires that are extremely high in semen fertility. Either way, the demand for SS is at an all time industry high, with many semen companies worldwide struggling to keep up with this demand. he highest

Holstein Proofs from Australia - Highlights

There was very little news from the domestic Holstein April 22 proof summaries. Jeronimo from ABS continues to hold the #1 mantle for the top BPI sires at 535. He did increase slightly on his overall type to now be 99. A sire that is dead and with limited semen is Fedora (GAC). This Bandares son who sires so much strength moved to #2 (lift of 30 points) to now be 476 BPI. Superpower from GAC is the number 1 sire standing in Australia on a proven base landing at #4 with a BPI of 454 and a stable 105 on overall type. Do the calculations for the overall type assessment of individual sires need to be revised? Consistently we hear and see great daughter reports but when the data is released their overall values are often extremely disappointing. Do traits such as chest width and pin setting have too much weighting. A number of extremely well-known sires recently debuted in Australia with overall type linear less than 100. When in other countries around the world these sires feature in the top percentile for overall confirmation. Confusing to say the least!

The #1 BPI Jersey herd in Australia, White Star (Glennan family) bred the equal new #1 BPI sires in Australia with Douggan and Dobson. Tied at 413 BPI these David Paternal brothers debuted with excellent daughter numbers and both achieving plus rated confirmation scores. In recent years a sire thathas received numerous accolades based on his early milking daughters has been Askn from GAC. He debuted at #3 with a BPI 332 coupled with a nice type and mammary combo of 109 respectively. The well credentialed Matt (WWS) moves back to #4, but he continues to receive glowing endorsements in the field with his farmer satisfaction maybe the best we have seen for many a year.

Upon graduation Dan has worked in multiple roles in the AI industry from Mating cows, Breeding cows as a Technician to Picture and Tour coordination and Sire Analyst work. Dan has judged in many countries around the world over his career including in Australia on several occasions. Canadian Proof Results Holstein LPI Highlights The sire who will leave daughters wider than they are high, maintains the #1position on LPI. That bull is Westcoast Alcove from the Semex stable. Sired by the constructor sire in Duke from an impressive MVP daughter, Alcove has created lots of interest in Australia for the discerning breeder keen to add power into his cows.

Farnear-Delta Lambda now has nearly 1500 daughters milking in Canada and holds the #2 position on LPI. Popular all around the world, Lambda is +14 on overall type and maintains strong ratings across his working traits. A sire that has received some usage in Australia and represents and outcross is No-Fla Capital 45499. He sits at the #4 position and his Ferdinand/Stoic pedigree offers up something different. USA Proof Results Holstein TPI Highlights The April run saw a significant addition of non herd tested data. In fact over one million lactation’s were added to the database. There was some internal re-rankings occur with Lionel (WWS) lifting to 279 TPI points to take the #1 mantle. His outstanding production traits, particularly 152 lbs of Fat contributed to his increased TPI score.

Renegade (WWS) and Pursuit (Semex) continue to perform strongly, holding down the #2 and #6 positions respectively. Pine-Tree-I Pursuit daughters are now calving across Australia. This bull is the modern day sire; maintaining body condition, average in stature and has plenty of strength. Early daughters inspected by LEG reflect his sound linear. A sire that did lift significantly and has moved to the #8 TPI sire is ST Gen R-Haze Rapid (ST/Agri-Gene). This Rubicon grandson from a Rubicon dam has outstanding udders. An early daughter group, recently evaluated in Gippsland were real standouts. These great shaped heifers had phenomenal udders, with amazing height and width and quality to their udders.
