NEWSLETTER ‘Sexed Semen - what a great tool for your farm!’
TTER
The artificial breeding industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace. The recent acquisition of Total Livestock Genetics by Genetics Australia is a progressive move for the Australian genetics industry. This will enable the Australian dairy farmer to have a greater range of sires from most dairy breeds in sexed form. The continued growth and accessibility of fresh and frozen sexed semen (SS) has never been greater. As SS usage continues to grow in the dairy industry, so too has the demand for beef semen. Farmers want their heifer calves born in tighter groups for ease of management, future joining and potentially sale of valuable surplus heifer calves. This naturally poses the question, what is the outlook for conventional semen? Is it possible that in a few years’ time that SS will equate for 50% of all semen sold in Australia? This may lead to fewer bulls being marketed (long overdue). But it also could include sires that aren’t able to access sexed sorting machines.
he highest s number 1 The challenge all Artificial Breeding companies face worldwide is to produce a quality sexed product, of sires that the consumer wants and the price that er number 1. they can justify. It is imperative that you research your sexed product. Does it have a SCR (Sire Conception Rate)? Is it 2M, 4M or Sexcel? A successful
experience with SS maybe is one of the most advantageous and financially positive experiences you could have on your farm. However, you must research thoroughly as there can be significant differing of results from sire to sire. he importance
