A Message From CEO Alex Mollart

Welcome to this month's edition. We’ve had many people out of the business over the summer months, it’s nice to see so many faces back to work and everybody gearing up as we move towards Q4.

With the launch of our new 2024 ‘Bubble’ strategy, there’s a real buzz starting around the offices again. We’re preparing for the opening of our new London office on Tuesday 3rd October and it was also great to see so many of you join me at last month’s Townhall to hear about the fantastic work our People Council are doing to help make Tandem a great place to work.

Do More. Do it Faster. Do it Greener.

TandemBank

We are on a mission to make it easier for more people to choose a greener lifestyle

TandemCommunity

We are building a movement with families and young adults who want to live in a lower carbon economy

We are building a green hub providing tailored advice on how people can make their homes, transport and lifestyles a little greener

For those who perhaps haven’t yet seen it, I wanted to recap that we have a new 2024 strategy focusing on three key areas; Tandem Bank, Tandem Impact and Tandem Community.

Tandem Bank is the area where we all sit within, as of today – making it easier for more people to choose a greener lifestyle. We’ve made a good start but I want us to challenge ourselves to be greener in ‘every transaction’ we do. Each of our Managing Directors for Mortgages, Savings, Motor Finance and Home Improvements have been tasked to make our products greener.

Tandem Impact will see the launch of Green Hub – a reinvention of Tandem Marketplace. We’re building a green hub providing tailored advice on how people can make their homes, transport and lifestyles a little greener. By bringing ‘green to your screen’, we need to accelerate the transformation of our app and the Green Hub.

Tandem Community will build movement with families and young adults who want to live a lower carbon economy. We’ll start telling our story to consumers and making Tandem a household name. We can’t achieve our mission if people don’t know we exist!

Tandem Vision We all know and recognise the Tandem ‘greenhouse’ vision. So, these changes to our strategy are reflected in a new Tandem greenhouse, helping us to be the UK’s green bank.

“We make it easier for people to choose a greener lifestyle.”

In The Spotlight

Prime Minister’s Announcement on Net Zero 2030 targets

There’s been a lot of noise about u-turns and missed targets following Rishi Sunak’s update and it’s important to understand why the Prime Minister has taken this route – if the UK is to hit net zero targets, everyone has to be taken on the journey.

The green transition is at the core of Tandem Bank’s strategy. The biggest win from the PM’s announcement is the increase in grants for heat pumps which increases from £5k to £7.5k – definitely a step in the right direction towards making greener choices fairer and more affordable. But it has to be more than a short-term fix if we’re to reach 600k heat pump installations by 2030.

The delay to phasing out petrol cars and gas boilers is disappointing, but the EV market remains buoyant with producers making significant investments – and let’s not forget a new EV is registered in the UK every 60 seconds. Consumers continue to go electric and we need to keep up the momentum.

Deadlines do matter though, for consumers and businesses alike. The PM's announcement brings certainty to which we can all get behind. Achieving net zero may not be easy, but it’s a journey everyone must go on.

Partner Pioneer Showcase

Last month, Tandem welcomed our motor finance partners Zuto, to Leighton Hall, to hear about how they attained a B Corp accreditation for their environmental and employee work, and how a partnership with Tandem would help align our vision to be environmentally and socially responsible.

As part of our Impact North Star we aim to attain the B Corp accreditation. B Corp companies meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance and are legally committed to consider the impact of their decisions on all their stakeholders, not just shareholders.

Tandem showcased its 2024 Vision and Motor Finance Roadmap, focusing on our green credentials and how ESG and Impact is also driving forwards our people engagement.

Lucy Arthurs from Leighton Hall explored the importance of environmental issues and how the work they do in partnership with Tandem through volunteering days andplanting over 30,000 trees, has helped rejuvenate the land at the estate.

Debbie Waterman, Tandem’s Head of Facilities and Partnerships said,

“We were so pleased at how our first Partner Pioneer event went at Leighton

Hall. Much of the work that Zuto highlighted in their presentation that went towards their B Corp certification aligns with many of the projects already underway within Tandem. We will be holding more of these events with other partners across the bank to help recruit more onto the Tandem greener journey.”

Following the presentations the group visited some of the Tandem employees taking part in one of the bug hotel volunteer days and then on to Tandem Wood where Tandem money and volunteers have been responsible for planting 30,000 different species of trees and 20,000 spring bulbs.

The Partner Pioneer day was a huge success, with Zuto signing up to partner with our corporate parter Trees4Life. They also plan to adopt similar new starter initiatives.

Volunteering with Tandem

Building bug hotels at Leighton Hall

On Thursday 24th August some of our members of staff and their families got their wellies out and made their way down to Leighton Hall to help build bug hotels to help create safe homes for pollinators, insects, and bugs.

When working at Tandem all staff get 2 days every year that they can use to help and volunteer. The Leighton Hall family day had many people interested because not only could they help a local charity they could also bring the whole family, giving them an extra day to spend with them during the summer holidays.

Sinead Elliott, Head of Communications said,“It was a great way to enjoy the outdoors together with my daughters, colleagues from different offices, and their families –encouraging the next generation to love and care for our planet.”

People Council Update

Representatives from across the bank came together in April this year to form The People Council. The role of the People Council is to ensure Tandem remains a great place to work; embracing our BEST Values, motivating our peers and empowering our people so they feel engaged. Driving an inclusive community for all our people, the People Council will nurture and grow our culture within Tandem.

Over the past few months, the members have been working on four key workstreams to help fulfil the purpose of the People Council:

• Health, Wellbeing & Social

• Impact and ESG

• Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

• Women in Finance

All workstreams now have project plans in place and you will be hearing more about these and how you can be involved in the coming Townhall meetings.

You should have seen the DE&I team’s call to action on email and the Hub recently - as part of their key focus, we’re introducing new employee profile information fields in BambooHR, enabling us to foster an inclusive and supportive workplace, where every individual is celebrated and valued for their unique backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.

To help support this project. We are simply asking that all employees log on to https://tandem.bamboohr.com/home and complete the new profile fields which can be found under the “Personal” section of the “My Info” tab.

Please be assured that this information will be treated as confidential and will be utilised solely for workforce analytics, identification of potential disparities, and creating more inclusive initiatives.

Join the DE&I workstream!

If you share our passion for creating a workplace that truly celebrates diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all, we invite you to join the DE&I workstream. To sign up and be part of this transformative workstream, please email our DE&I team at: DEI@tandem.co.uk

Meet Our Culture Champions

As we integrate the BEST Values into our everyday lives, we continue to recognise those who live and work by our core values and walk the talk – leading by example. Each month, we'll spotlight culture champions who have demonstrated they're using our core BEST Values to help make Tandem great!

The business took the brave decision to build an in-house platform, which is rated highly by our retailer partners. The platform has been developed in an enterprising way to support current product offerings but has proven flexibility allowing us to move into adjacent markets when required.

The integration of EPVS (Energy Performance Validation Service) with a focus to drive better and simpler outcomes for our customers, supporting risk mitigation.

Ongoing enhancements are developed by cross functional teams (e.g., underwriting, commercial, risk, compliance, ops) collaborating together with a laser focus on outcomes for our retailer and consumer customers to bring to life our Tandem values and continuously drive the stability and scalability of the platform.

Nominate a colleague

We want to continue to grow our culture and that starts with each and every one of you! All nominations submitted need to demonstrate how they're Brave, Enterprising, Simple or Together: internalcomms@tandem.co.uk

Sarah is currently supporting me with a piece of operational training relating to the loan management system that we use that is being rolled out across the Operations Teams.

I reached out to Sarah asking for her help with this at short notice and she immediately responded and confirmed that she would help. She quickly took ownership for the piece of work and within less than 24 hours had planned what to do and when to do it. I am very grateful to Sarah for her help and her attitude and willingness to take responsibility for this demonstrates our value of #simple and #together.

Customer Outcomes Testing Team (COTT)

For showing their true ‘Together’ values recently. Due to a number of factors, our Complaints Team found itself temporarily under-resourced and a plan was mobilised with the COTT – led by Jamie Havill - heavily in support. This was important not just to stay in control of our complaints WIP but also to ensure our newer members of the team were appropriately supported during their Pathways to Competence.

Every member of the COTT offered fantastic support to the Complaints Team and as a result, we are now firmly on our way back to BAU and all the plates were kept spinning throughout this challenging period. Thank you COTT – and especially Faye Porter and Georgina Barker who remain in support of the Complaints Team for a further few weeks.

Ruth serves up delights for Breast Cancer

A huge well done to Ruth Ryall, Head of Products (lending) at our Cardiff office on raising a total of £2,144 at her annual fundraising event for Breast Cancer Now with a Strawberry-themed afternoon tea at her local village hall.

A core team of six female volunteers (with husbands and kids drafted in when necessary) organised all elements of the event. Funds were raised from an entry fee, raffle ticket sales, a Pimms & Prosecco bar and various craft/tombola stalls, all run by the volunteers. With raffle prizes donated from many of the local businesses including pubs, golf courses, and a local hotel.

Adrian’s on the run again!

Following Adrien Watkin’s (Specialist Customer Support Manager, Blackpool) Brighton Marathon earlier in the year, where he raised £750 for the MIND Charity, he has also last month run the Great North Run, 13 miles from Newcastle to South Shields in aid of the 4Louis charity.  Adrian says, “It was a great day very hot and doing it on a dodgy leg was tough but very enjoyable and being part of Sir Mo Farah’s last ever race was a great experience. I managed to get round in a half decent time and caught up with the 4Louis team afterwards, thank you for anyone who donated and please keep donating if you can.”

The 4Louis charity were extremely grateful for charitable donations following the Great North Run this year as Adrian and other runners like him, raised a total of £100,00 to the 4Louis charity.

You can still support Adrian for his fantastic effort at: 4louis.enthuse.com/pf/adrian-watkin

Lynn Edwards abseil down the Cheesegrater building,London

Lynn Edwards, Tech Lead for the IT-Core Banking Team, in London, climbed 42 flights of stairs to then abseil down the Leadenhall Building (also known as the Cheesegrater) on 9th September in aid of the Tommy charity, along with her friend .... or at least that was the plan! Unfortunately due to technical issues, many of the participants were unable to take part in the abseil, however climbing the 42 flights in itself is quite an achievement!

Lynn said "It was incredibly disappointing to not be able to be offered the abseil but at least we were able to complete the tower run".

To support Lynn in her fundraising for Tommy you can donate here:  skyscraperchallenge.tommys.org/lynnjodyrox

Donna’s Hike for Alzehimer’s society

On 2nd September, Donna West, Training and Competency Manager in Cardiff, and three friends took on a 26 mile hike across Sailsbury/Stonehenge in support of Alzheimer’s society. The actual distance covered was 27.9 miles…..and no she didn’t get lost, the route was longer!

They raised an amazing £1700 but there is still time to donate via: www.justgiving.com/team/WelshRedHotChilliPeppers
