Welcome to the August edition. As we hit the mid-year mark, it’s a great time to reflect on the previous half year before focusing on the second half.
The first half of 2023 has been tough, but we’ve also made some fantastic progress. We’ve had the market leading Instant Access Savings Account rate gaining national coverage and recognition, we completed the acquisition of Loop, we’ve published our very first Annual Report with some aspirational targets to aim for within the next year, we’ve completed the final stages of our integration project with all products now fully rebranded to Tandem. Plus we've launched our enhanced employee benefits package with a new pension scheme, electric vehicle scheme and healthcare cash plan for all 500 employees.
At last month’s Senior Leadership away day and July’s Townhall, I announced the launch of our new 2024 strategy focusing on three key areas; Tandem Bank, Tandem Impact and Tandem Community.

Tandem Bank is the area where we all sit within, as of today – making it easier for more people to choose a greener lifestyle. We’ve made a good start but I want us to challenge ourselves to be Greener in ‘every transaction’ we do. Each of our Managing Directors for Mortgages, Savings, Motor Finance and even Home Improvements have been tasked to make our products greener.
Tandem Impact will see the launch of Green Hub – a reinvention of Tandem Marketplace. We’re building a Green Hub providing tailored advice on how people can make their homes, transport and lifestyles a little greener. By bringing ‘green to your screen’, we need to accelerate the transformation of our app and the Green Hub.
Tandem Community will build movement with families and young adults who want to live a lower carbon economy. We’ll start telling our story to consumers and making Tandem a
household name. We can’t achieve our mission if people don’t know we exist!
I’m super excited to share this strategy with you and to see how this shift in focus evolves for our future vision. This is also reflected in our new Tandem greenhouse (below), helping us to be the future greener bank.

‘We’re here to make it easier for more people to choose a greener lifestyle’
Thank you to everyone who completed last month’s employee engagement survey. With an 80% participation rate, it’s great to see so many of you getting involved and sharing your thoughts. Thank you for your honest feedback.
Q2 saw a positive movement in overall engagement at organisational level with a +0.2 movement. Several functions exceeded the bank average including Finance and Home Improvements at a very healthy 8+ engagement metric.
Although we still have three teams scoring below the engagement mark of 7, Operations saw the biggest month-on-month rise for all business areas/functions, suggesting recent action planning is being recognised by colleagues.
Overall, the metrics at bank level saw a positive increase compared to the Q2 survey, however all teams are continuing to work hard to keep our colleagues engaged.
Key headlines
� Overall Engagement scored 7.1 (out of 10) increasing by +0.2
� Consistently strong feedback that performance management and manager support is being recognised at all levels
� Reward saw highest movement with +0.5 following the launch of pensions, Electric Vehicle scheme and healthcare cash plan.
� Decision to exit the London office before a new location was identified has impacted engagement levels based there. We hope to see significant improvement in Q3 and Q4 once plans are confirmed for the new London office workspace.

Donna West, Training & Competency Manager at our Cardiff Office completed a Wing Walk on the 7th June to raise money for the Stevie Stones Charity.
Donna says, “As most of you may already know, I’m a bit of an adrenaline seeking fool! For this challenge though, I did think that once I came face to face with the plane I might S*** myself, but no…I arrived, I wanted to skip the safety briefing and get up there!
The pilot mentioned if anyone was nervous, let him know and he’d go slow, if you showed him the thumbs down, he could land pretty quickly! I approached him and said ‘can you do your absolute worst, take it to your absolute limit when I’m up there please!’
Here’s a few ugly photos for you to laugh and cringe at, but on a serious note I want to say thank you to everyone, your support has been phenomenal.”

Congratulations!! We have some amazing anniversaries to celebrate this month...
Since joining in 2018, I can honestly say the best thing about Tandem is the people! I work with an amazing group who are very supportive and to be honest, make every day enjoyable.
With that said, I also love my job and the challenges it comes with. I started as an agent in the Collections team when we were 1st Stop, then watched us turn into Oplo, and then merge with Tandem. The business is ever changing, and I look forward to seeing what the future brings.
Since joining 5 years ago as a Junior Developer, I've been offered lots of opportunities for growth, development and career progression. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with lots of great people and squads on challenging but very rewarding projects.
I have been fortunate enough to work with a great management team in the Home Improvements Loans department. Working at Tandem has given me a great work life balance, allowing me to travel, and visit 25 countries in the last 2.5 years! I am looking forward to progressing my career at Tandem, focusing on the green agenda and helping to make traveling greener through carbon offsetting.
I can’t quite believe it’s been 10 years since I started at 1st Stop Home Loans. When I sit back and reflect on the growth of the company and what I have been a part of over the years, it’s quite overwhelming. So, goodness knows how Alex must feel!
When you work with a team of like-minded people that feel like friends, it doesn’t feel like hard work. It truly is the people that keep you going on the good, the bad and the mundane days. I attribute most of my professional and personal success in life to this company and I’m eternally grateful for all the opportunities that have come before me and will hopefully come to me in the future. As a part of our ongoing volunteering efforts with one of our Corporate Partners, The BoatHouse Youth, members from Tandem volunteered to help to take part in their summer camp. With our Head Office being in Blackpool, we became Platinum Patrons of The BoatHouse Youth charity in 2021, offering them both financial sponsorship and people support via volunteering days.
The BoatHouse Youth are a Registered UK Charity that work with children and young people in Blackpool. Their mission aims to break the cycle of deprivation for children, young people, and their families in Blackpool. By
removing barriers and creating opportunities that are engaging, and enable positive relationships to form, so that every young person can realise their own potential.
Our Tandem team of volunteers went and supported the 3 week long summer camp, taking part in activities including boot washing, tent re-pegging and general camp maintenance.
We also held social media classes to teach the young people about TikTok and understand how they can utilise the platform to promote The BoatHouse Youth.
We have launched our very own Tandem Football Club! Introducing our new Tandem Sports and Social Club. We're searching for employees across all locations who are passionate about developing a new activity or sports club for Tandem.
Following the fantastic success of the Lionesses, Jordan Coleman, Customer Outcomes Testing Analyst in Blackpool saw an opportunity to bring members of the Blackpool office together and set up an 11−a-side Blackpool Sunday football team.
Although we've only had men sign up so far, we'd encourage any ladies who'd like to get involved and set up their own team, to do so!
Why are we doing this?
Football is universally recognised as a great way to develop teamwork, improve fitness, and boost mental health, which Tandem is a huge advocate of.
We want to encourage our colleagues to get involved and champion our brand values of being Brave, Enterprising, Simple and Together.
Our Manager, Jordan Coleman says, “It's been a busy few weeks since we created Tandem FC with organising training, the kit design, AGM and pre-season planning. Each player has dedicated their time and energy into making this team a success and I feel as though it's going to be one fantastic first season for Tandem FC!

Supporting our Corporate Partner, Leighton Hall Estate, we've kicked off our summer bug hotel volunteering days over the summer months.
Our volunteers are learning what a bug hotel is, the benefits that they bring to local environments, and how to build one. The hotels provide homes for pollinators and wildlife, increase biodiversity in the area, and help to further pollinate plants.
The teams gathered natural materials from around the Leighton Hall grounds, such as straw, pinecones and bamboo, and transformed wooden pallets into safe environments for lots of pollinators to thrive!
We asked Sally Howcroft, Head of HR, Daniel Breakall, HR Business Partner and Lucy Arthurs, Leighton Hall's Estate Manager, a few questions on their experience of their team’s day.
What did you enjoy most about the bug volunteering day?
Sally – “It was really nice to step away from the office and be with different people from across the business. Also, not even knowing what a bug hotel was before I went and getting to learn about all the benefits of them for the pollinators, physically getting to build one ourselves and see what we had accomplished by the end of the day was great.”
Daniel - “The visit was really immersive and showed how we can get stuck in and give back to the environment, as well as being a great team building experience for employees. Overall, it was an enjoyable day!”
Would you recommend for others to give it a go?
Sally - “It's a brilliant way to spend the day and I would encourage everyone to keep an eye on upcoming events and sign themselves and their teams up!”
How well did the Tandem team do Lucy?
Lucy - "People enjoyed being out of the office and being given the ability to connect with others and get stuck in. This was the first cube of the communal pollinator pyramid I am creating via this programme, and it is fabulous. They have set the bar high for the next group!"

Congratulations to the Dogwood team, who won our June Greenr App competition with an impressive 178,640 points. Closely followed by team Elm who placed 2nd, and team Juniper who placed 3rd.
Each member of the Dogwood team who took part in the Tandem challenge won an EXTRA day of annual leave and a collective £250 charity donation to the charity of their choice - The BoatHouse Youth.
In just one month, everyone who took part in the Greenr App Tandem Challenge achieved:
You managed to reduce a staggering 21.5 tonnes of CO2e at source! To put that into perspective, it's equivalent to having 1,075 trees growing for a whole year. You ate 212 vegetarian meals. You cycled over 1,431 km.
Thanks to all of you for making a difference in the fight against climate change. Together, we make the world that little bit Greenr.
What's next?
The competition doesn't stop here! It's important to continue to use the app to log your meals, travel, and make pledges to help lower carbon emissions and continue to contribute towards your team's overall score.
