Emily Dickinson’s poem, Within my reach!, explores how things are often within reach but how through choice, perhaps apprehension or simply not being focussed, we may miss an experience or an opportunity. Life presents us with many opportunities. In fact every day we are faced with numerous opportunities. The challenge is to reach out and have a go, to try something new. We should not think about it for too long or too deeply as we can often overthink such things, settling on reasons or adding obstacles that would see us fail to embrace such moments; moments which may never come our way again; missed opportunities.

The wonderful thing about a Fintona education is that each year is filled with so many opportunities for each and every girl. In reading this edition of the Fintona File you will once again see a snapshot of these opportunities but more than that, you will see that so many of our girls make the utmost of their education to extend themselves. In fact, that is the status quo at Fintona. Girls pushing new boundaries, exploring new

pursuits, trying their hand at sport, music, drama, public speaking, debating, the creative arts and so much more. They are passionate about the world around them, they have a voice and want to champion positive changes.

In this edition we pay tribute to past Principal and Old Fintonian, Miss Elizabeth Butt OAM who passed away aged 91 this August. We also celebrate the achievements and share the careers of a number of our alumni. Our alumni are women who stand out from the crowd. They make a difference to the lives of others, forge new paths and represent themselves and the school with great pride.

They are women who have embraced opportunities throughout their life, embracing the Fintona ethos and mindset.

Every girl, every opportunity, doing what they do well.

Vale MISS BUTT ELIZABETH BUTT OAM 29 May 1928 – 11 August 2019 “We were really privileged to be in a school so brilliantly supportive of young women’s education – not that I quite realised it at the time. This is the passing of a truly remarkable woman.” Shelley Robyn Scown (’80). This is indicative of the many comments that were written when the Fintona community heard of the passing of Elizabeth Butt. Past students and parents from many decades, staff and colleagues of Elizabeth gathered to pay their respects at her Memorial Service at Fintona on 21 August 2019. Not only was Elizabeth a personal friend to many, but the sheer enormity of the effect that she had on so many lives in such diverse spheres was apparent as her Memorial Service took place.

Elizabeth’s connection with Fintona began in 1934 when she was enrolled as a student with her sister, Judith. In 1946, Elizabeth matriculated with honours after serving the School as a Prefect and a Sports Captain.

She then went on to study Science at The University of Melbourne.

During her leadership as Headmistress of Fintona from 1963 to 1991, Elizabeth exerted an enormous influence on education, especially that of young women. A strong advocate of change, Elizabeth initiated fundraising campaigns, completed buildings such as the Margaret Cunningham Wing and the Elizabeth Butt Building and built science laboratories, drama spaces, a computer centre, senior common rooms and a new library as well as classrooms.

Her determination and vision ensured innovations for the benefit of the students and staff of Fintona.

Elizabeth also made a significant contribution to the broader educational community. She was a member of the Board of the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV) for twenty four years and served as Deputy Chair for eight years. She was heavily involved in the Teachers’ Conciliation and Arbitration Board (Girls’ Schools) commonly known as the Wages Board and during this time and was most influential in improving of working conditions for female teachers.

When the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia was established, Elizabeth was at the forefront, and again pioneered the way for female teachers through this organisation. Her position as Victorian delegate to the National Council of Independent Schools for 17 years involved liaising with the Federal Government on educational issues is also an indication of the esteem in which Elizabeth was held in educational circles.

Upon her retirement, Elizabeth continued her support for Fintona by attending numerous school functions and reunions. In addition, she maintained her commitment to the advancement of education and school governance.

Elizabeth served as a member of the governing body for three girls’ schools, where she mentored a number of other female leaders who were always appreciative of her wise counsel. A constant throughout the many tributes made to Elizabeth is the reference to her common sense, her fairness, her sense of humour and her ability to put everyone at ease.

Elizabeth also made an outstanding commitment to the advancement of education through her work with the Invergowrie Foundation as a founding Council member and its inaugural Deputy Chair. The importance and value of Elizabeth’s contribution to education was exemplified when she was awarded a Medal for the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2001 for her services to education, particularly through the independent sector and to the community through cultural and charitable groups.

Elizabeth Butt was a woman of integrity who led the School and maintained its high standards and traditions whilst at the same time having the flexibility to adapt to the changing values of society. She genuinely made a difference to the lives of so many young people, both at Fintona and in the wider educational sphere. Elizabeth epitomised Age Quod Agis - do what you do well - and we are grateful for the remarkable legacy she has left.

ELC

Across

Term 2 and 3, the ELC children engaged in a PYP Unit of Inquiry, How we express ourselves. This unit considers what a story is, and investigates the multitude of methods through which through which stories can be told.

One of the K3’s favourite stories this year has been Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. To enhance the children’s understanding of this story, and to help us learn more about how caterpillars transform, we were visited by Sharon from Butterfly Adventures. During this incursion children learnt all about the lifecycle of the caterpillar and butterfly, and how best to care for them.

Sharon introduced the children to puppets, props and images to help explain each stage of the transformation. The children also had the opportunity to dress-up in costumes to further explore how the butterfly moves, and uses its body to sense food. The children were even allowed in a special tent in which Sharon released some Monarch butterflies.

K3 teachers, Mrs Kristene Devine and Mrs Charmian Harris were delighted by how many elements of the PYP Learner Profile the children exhibited throughout this incursion, including being inquirers, thinkers, good communicators and caring when allowing the butterflies to land on their hands for a closer look.

Junior School

The

girls in the Junior School are always seeking ways to demonstrate their talents and interests to our community. Our weekly assemblies are a great way to share our gifts and musical or theatrical performances with the wider School community. The girls have performed in assemblies that highlighted their musical abilities, individual talents, mother tongue or simply an area of interest such as poetry, ballet or improvised drama.

The Languages Assembly saw girls share their cultural backgrounds and languages through poetry, drama, speeches, music and dance. They performed in their mother tongue and translated their performances to the audience to share their wonderful cultural practices with everyone. We witnessed girls from Prep to Year 4 in stunning cultural attire take to the stage to delight their audience and celebrate our cultural connections.

Middle School In

today’s society, public speaking is an important skill to learn, yet it can be daunting. I have been impressed by the way Fintona embraces this form of communication so early in each student’s life at the School. Getting up in front of an audience has already become second nature, it seems, for our Middle School girls. They have learned the importance of engaging their audience through eye contact, solid research, control of speed and tone in voice, and body language.

The Annual Elizabeth M Butt Public Speaking Competition is an excellent focus for public speaking. Middle School English teachers support all their students in preparing a speech for this competition. Each girl presents her own speech in front of her English class. Each class then votes two students to go forward to present their speech at the Senior campus assembly. Usually, the girls embrace their initial fears and harness the adrenalin and practice to build confidence in their communication skills. This is a unique experience as most schools wait for students to volunteer to speak publicly; but, here at Fintona, everyone is involved.

Senior School Reflecting

on my first twelve months at Fintona I am particularly struck with the leadership abilities of our girls. One of the strengthening aspects of Year 12 at Fintona is that every girl has a leadership role as a Senator. This responsibility recognises the importance of their place as leaders, role models and mentors to younger girls.

In 2020 the Senior School will launch its new Leadership Program, ad senatorem, focussing on the development of skills, involvement in opportunities and development of student voice whilst moving towards Senatorship.

Fintona has recently conducted its Senior Campus Wellbeing and Mental Health survey which has captured the voices of the girls, giving the Wellbeing Team valuable insights to inform the design of pastoral care programs and development of future student voice offerings. The survey also uncovered excellent information confirming that most girls feel safe, well cared for and pushed academically at Fintona.

When talking about wellbeing and leadership it is timely to recognise the caring and graceful leadership of our finishing Consuls. Amy Chilcott and Chee-Rae Loi have led us with humour and good ideas this year, responding positively to the changes that a new Head of Senior School can bring. They have also brought change through their Anti Bullying Friendship lunch and their Finstagram initiative will be long remembered! Amy and Chee-Rae have been excellent role models for all girls leading different groups

Our hope is that girls take up the opportunities on offer in the developing leadership space next year. It is of note that so many Old Fintonians have taken up the call to be a part of our 2020 Leadership Development Series, which will only strengthen our girls’ leadership development and future goal setting.

Our Young Achievers Premier’s VCE Award for Rachel Congratulations to 2018 student Rachel Lang on receiving an Award for English. The Premier’s VCE Awards recognise students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

Careers Breakfast The

inaugural Fintona Careers Breakfast was an excellent opportunity to listen to the stories and career journeys of thirteen of our Old Fintonians who had commenced university and work relatively recently.

The breakfast was open to Year 10 – 12 students and was a chance for these current students to chat to the Old Fintonians in an informal, convivial setting with lots of interesting interactions and conversations. The keynote speaker, Charlotte Ramage, was an inspiration in terms of her suggestions, her career story and her advice. Charlotte had navigated a very interesting career journey and she stressed that hers was certainly not a linear path to finding a position that she is very passionate about. As Charlotte said, ”If you had asked me 11 years ago, if I would be doing what I do now, I would say I’d never heard or imagined that the role I do exists.“ Whilst studying Biomedicine Charlotte studied a subject that was not part of the core degree called Global Health, Sustainability and Security. This subject opened her eyes to how someone’s circumstances can affect their health. She then found an interest in understanding health systems and policies and this led to Charlotte commencing postgraduate study in a Master of Public Health.

As well as our keynote speaker, we had twelve additional Old Fintonians who spoke on a more informal level to small groups whilst sharing breakfast. This part of the morning enabled the Old Fintonians to be available to share information on the industries they had experience in and field questions.

A True Passion for Music

Annual Music Concert

This

year’s Annual Music Concert was an exemplary evening of music showcasing the talents of junior, middle and senior students. The depth of skill and commitment ensured the Concert had a little bit of everything. The night’s proceedings featured concerto works by the Chamber Orchestra; funk bass pieces; massed Brazilian percussion music with 80 students on stage; a 170-piece choir singing in Indigenous Wadawurrung language as well as African Zulu language; the very beginnings of our next wave of

12

musicians performing Hot Cross Buns with extraordinary zeal and enthusiasm; a combined choir with Camberwell Grammar School performing selections from Orff’s Carmina Burana… and much more. The young musicians of Fintona performed to an excellent standard throughout the evening, and brought to the stage a true passion for music.

The Fintona school community is friendly, supportive and close-knit, with an active Parents Association, class representatives and various parent groups. The Rowing parents organised a Trivia Night to raise funds for a new boat; there was a record largest turnout of dads for the annual Beef and Burgundy Night; and parents enjoyed a glamourous night at Emulation Hall for the Fintona Gala. There were Father’s Day functions throughout the School, where dads and special people joined girls for special celebrations. There was also a full house for the Beyond Science Centre community launch where parents, students, staff and alumni learned about the Fintona Master Plan and saw the first glimpses of plans for the exciting new development, opening early 2021.

the eve of STEM Week, two outstanding Fintona teachers, Ruth McKinnon and Cathy Devlyn, were thrilled to join around 150 other Science and Mathematics educators for a reception in the drawing room at Government House this week.

In her speech, Her Excellency, the Honourable Linda Dessau, Governor of Victoria, expressed the importance of STEM education. She was keen to acknowledge the work of teachers in igniting the passion for learning and preparing our children for careers in Mathematics and Science.

“In a room of science and maths teachers, we are amongst some of the most influential people when it comes to Victoria’s future. Thank you,” said the Governor.

Andy Casey, lecturer in Astrophysics at Monash University was the inspiring guest speaker to launch STEM Week at Fintona. He spoke about his exciting research career including his proudest achievement – the discovery of the oldest star in the universe - the closest link to the Big Bang. Throughout the week, girls enjoyed an absolutely amazing array of activities, incursions and excursions…

are currently in the process of raising funds for our new Beyond Science Centre which will open early 2021. The Beyond Science Centre will be the first building in a three stage Master Plan that will give expression to the vision of the School, providing facilities that will inspire girls both now and into the future.

Our vision for the Beyond Science Centre is to create a hub of ingenuity, optimising the intrinsic relationship between science, mathematics, technology and design to enrich learning opportunities.

Building Design Well known architect and past parent Corbett Lyon knows first-hand the importance of the design, innovation and practicality of a new building. The team at Lyons has been working closely with project stakeholders and members of the wider Fintona community to create a building that is iconic and fit for purpose; one which embraces our history, culture and physical environment.

Fintona’s built fabric has changed throughout its history. From its first home in Mayston Street Camberwell, to Burke Road, and finally to Balwyn, Principals have worked to ensure that the students’ needs have been met through the provision of appropriate buildings and spaces. The Beyond Science Centre will be a new and modern building providing a bookend to the Margaret Ross Centre. Construction of the new building over part of Glencairn’s circular drive will be offset by new landscaping which will ultimately provide additional garden space.

Our

wonderful production of The Red Shoes was a joy to present to enthusiastic audiences, including a special matinee for junior students, in the Margaret Cunningham Hall.

Our talented cast wearing stunning costumes and creative makeup, were supported by a dedicated crew of staff and students.

The production presented Hans Christian Andersen’s original story set against a background of conformity, in which an orphan’s passion for a pair of red shoes and the wild dancing which follows seems like an unconscious rebellion against the environment she finds herself in. Altogether more hopeful, our production arrived at a different conclusion to the one Andersen might have intended, where our young protagonist, Karen, learned that ‘life’s more than luck, or chance…because you make your own fortune when you dance your own dance’

ELC-VCE Art and Design Show The

Fintona community was once again treated to a wonderful exhibition by our talented young artists at the annual ELC-VCE Art and Design Show.

The Corbett Lyon Gallery was alive with colour and texture with works including self-portraits by our Prep to Year 3 girls, sophisticated fashion pieces and furniture, 2D and 3D artworks showcasing the hard work and artistic dedication of our students. Other highlights included Year 7 gouache still life paintings and Year 9 furniture along with an eclectic array of works including painting, printmaking, ceramics, woodwork, textiles and design.

Karina will be remembered by many of her classmates, having attended Fintona from Prep to Year 10. Whilst she was not well enough to attend her 40 year reunion earlier this year, she did have an excellent memory and recalled many of the students and anecdotes from her time at Fintona.

Rosemary Mulcare was a student at Fintona for five years, leaving in 1963, after serving as a Senator and Vice-House Captain of Clarke. She studied Law at Monash University, gaining LLB in 1968.

Rosemary married Malcolm Mulcare and had three sons.

After leaving school Karina was bookshop manager at Ridley College.

She went on to study Psychology, then Clinical Psychology. She worked as part of the counselling team at Wagga Wagga Hospital before opening her own counselling practice.

Karina’s life revolved around helping people, from supporting refugees and homeless people, to helping people who needed a guiding hand or a little finance for food. As her health declined she spent her time exploring and researching her many interests online.

Her last years were spent in and out of hospital, and eventually a nursing home.

She returned home in May 2019 with the help of support services and passed away in her sleep two weeks later. Karina had an excellent capacity to recall events from the past, and this, along with her generosity, whacky sense of humour and long conversations will be sorely missed.

Kaillie Nott (’79) and Brian Coogan

Rosemary was a member of the Fintona Board of Management from 1979 - 1983 and again from 1994 until the late 1990s, and is remembered as being efficient, knowledgeable and friendly - a very valuable person to have on the Board.

She developed early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease at that time but that did not prevent her from re-joining the Board in 1994. Using her expertise and legal skills Rosemary established, in 2000, Tourmont Inc which was to be responsible for the management of the Margaret Cunningham Endowment Fund. This fund was the recipient of the final funds left to Fintona in Miss Cunningham’s will. Her diligence established a fund that could be administered separately from the School’s Management, by Old Fintonians to be used for out of the ordinary expenses.

Rosemary, who died recently at the age of seventy three, was always business-like, but at the same time, warm and welcoming, and even as her health deteriorated, she maintained caring for her family and an interest in her profession.

Her husband, Malcolm and her three sons, as well as those who knew her are very sad she is no longer with us, but we will remember her with great affection.

Life beyond School -

Beth Skilbeck (Hare ’44) 24/07/1927 – 26/07/2019 Beth came to Fintona in 1936, joining her older sister Marjory Verco (Hare ’31).

Beth excelled in sports. At Fintona, she was in the basketball, tennis and baseball teams, and gained her Colours in Sport. She held the school record for the baseball throw for many decades.

She was a Drill leader and Clarke House Captain in 1944, when she completed her Leaving Certificate.

Beth displayed musical talent, playing the cello at Fintona. She was also in the choir.

In 1945, Beth became a laboratory assistant at the Baker Institute for Medical Research, attached to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Beth worked there until 1948, before starting training as a State Registered Nurse at the Alfred Hospital, which she completed in 1951.

She met Ralph Skilbeck at the Alfred.

They married in 1951 and had five children, Catherine Frost (’69), Helen Stevens (’72), and Wendy Skilbeck (’75) all of whom attended Fintona, and sons, Mark and Michael. Beth returned to nursing as the practice nurse and office manager at the Union Road Surgery in Mont Albert, where her brother, Lin was a GP, until she retired in 1992. She was well known in the area due to her extensive years at the Surgery.

Beth’s interest in sport continued. She played tennis into her 50s, and was the Secretary of the Canterbury Baptist Tennis Club for 30 years. She loved watching cricket, particularly Test matches.

Beth was on the Fintona Board of Management as the Old Girls’ Representative from 1980 to 1987.

Living in Box Hill for many years, she was fondly known as “Radio Box Hill” by her family. She has 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Graduate from the Class of 2008, Charlotte Ramage delivered an inspiring and relevant keynote speech about the journey she has taken since leaving school. Students then enjoyed talking with Old Fintonians over breakfast about their tertiary studies and careers.

News of Old Fintonians

- Old Fintonians share their experiences Olivia Collins (’01) Artist

Since finishing School and studying a combined Commerce and Arts Degree at the University of Melbourne, Olivia has transitioned across a number of industries and roles including: managing a contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery, Marketing Manager at a stockbroking turned global mid-tier investment firm, to most recently working for herself as a piano teacher and artist. Olivia is experienced in self-led (or rather passion combined with education and opportunity) career development and thinking outside the mould of a set traditional career path.

Olivia found that it was her transferable skills that were nurtured during her time at Fintona, such as creative thinking, problem solving, public speaking, people/communication skills and indeed adhering to the old adage ‘do what you do well’ that have enabled her to seamlessly transition across industries and attributed to her success in each area.

Charlotte Ramage (’08)

Data Analytics and Health Consultant Charlotte completed Year 12 in 2008 and studied both a Bachelor of Biomedicine and Master of Public Health at University of Melbourne. She is currently working as the consultant in Health Strategy and Data and Analytics for a company called Quantium. In the last 3 years, she’s worked on and led data and analytics strategies for the Commonwealth Department of Health, WorkSafe Victoria, the Transport Accident Commission, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (Australia’s media regulator). Charlotte is also part of the Observership Program (run by the Australian Institute of Company Directors), and observes the board of Consumer Action Law Centre.

Prior to her current role at Quantium, Charlotte worked at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in Canberra, and Babylon, a health tech start up in London.

Nicole Conway (’08)

Audiologist

After Year 12, Nicole took a year off to travel and work before starting a Bachelor of Arts majoring in linguistics at the University of Melbourne. Nicole worked casually in food retail before moving into medical administration, first at an immigration health screening clinic and then at a local medical practice. After realising she loved communication and health care, Nicole started a Masters course in Clinical Audiology at the University of Melbourne, which also drew on her background in linguistics.

During postgraduate studies, Nicole took the opportunity to work as a research assistant at Cochlear Ltd. and juggled part-time administrative and hospitality work. She was lucky enough to be offered a graduate position as an Audiologist at the clinical school in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the University of Melbourne, which is where she currently works.

Nicole’s role is a mix of clinical, research and teaching. She works mostly with adults in hearing rehabilitation including hearing assessment, hearing aids, hearing protection, tinnitus, and many other things. Nicole is a member of the Victorian Chapter of the professional body, Audiology Australia, performing the role of Chapter Secretary. Allied health, and Audiology in particular, is a hugely rewarding career path for Nicole.

Congratulations to Professor Amanda Leach (Kent ’72) who has been recognised for her research work into Aboriginal health with one of Territory women’s highest accolades, the Telstra Northern Territory Business Woman of the Year.

Amanda is a Principal Research Fellow of Menzies School of Health Research and Leader of the Ear Health Research Program, Child Health Division.

The award recognises her tireless work in improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders through medical research.

After graduating from Fintona in 1972, Amanda went on to study a Master of Agricultural Science at La Trobe University 1 (1983), then completed a PhD (Medicine) in 1998. Amanda is often asked to talk about the important turning points or influences in her career, and she always recalls how significant her Fintona years were in shaping her love of science and giving her self-belief.

OFA Year 12 Welcome Morning Tea

Introducing the OFA Leadership Development Series

As part of the Year 12 students’ final day of School, a morning tea was held to welcome them into the Old Fintonians’ Alumni. Old Fintonians, Jackie Besley (Robertson ‘86) a Board Member, and Renata Jenkins, (De Bortoli ’90) a Past Board Member and Member of Tourmont and current parent, presented each student with a beautiful bracelet as a memento of their time at Fintona.

One of the best traditions in the Senior School at Fintona is the role of a Senator.

Next year will mark the start of a new leadership program, Ad Senatorem (Towards a Senator) for girls in Years 9 to 12.

A component of the program will include developmental workshops with strong and experienced female leaders sharing their leadership stories with girls from Year 9 to Year 12. Workshops will run for approximately an hour with an Old Fintonian sharing their leadership experience, style and journey.

Workshops can be scheduled for breakfast, lunchtime or afterschool, depending on your availability.
