Principal

As

my first year as Principal draws to a close, it is lovely to reflect on the many achievements of our girls, our staff and our entire community.

In so many ways, Fintona girls (and ELC boys) are encouraged to do what they do well. It is our job as educators and mentors, and importantly as a supportive community, to inspire them to believe in themselves and know that anything is possible.

I am constantly delighted by the many good things I see happening at Fintona; the people I meet, the classrooms I visit, the students I talk with, the staff I work with, the families I interact with, the competitions, events and activities I attend.

We take our school motto, Age Quod Agis, to mean ‘do what you do well’. By this we mean - do it to the best of your ability, be the best you, reach for the stars in every endeavour, and continue to GREAT THINGS COME FROM A SMALL PACKAGE

learn and grow. This is not just in academic pursuits, but extends to all facets of the girls’ lives – academic, co-curricular, social and personal.

We teach them that people will judge you on what you do, what you achieve, whether you stand up to your word, whether you follow through, whether you are a person of integrity and honesty. Not an easy thing to live up to, but one to certainly aspire to.

This has been a year of so many highlights as we constantly seek new challenges while honouring past traditions. Among them was our 80th Shakespeare Day, as staff and students performed seven masterful excerpts in the Tourmont courtyard; the World Challenge girls who stepped outside their comfort zones trekking, exploring and undertaking a service project in Costa Rica; or the group of students who explored a galaxy beyond imagination at the NASA Space Camp in the USA.

Closer to home, Fintona girls were challenged to be their best selves in classrooms and in numerous academic competitions, on stage and on the playing field; on tours, excursions, camps, hosting and exchanges. Then there was the multitude of fundraising and community service events, STEM events, public speaking and debating competitions and so much more. Our community was encouraged too, with informative seminars for parents and students throughout the year. Students excelled themselves in the production of The Wizard of Oz, or through their personal expression as showcased at the Art and Design show, as well as through participating in any of the numerous music and drama performances.

It was also wonderful to see so many Old Fintonians return to the School for a very successful Careers Evening, where 130 students and parents were inspired by the stories of

Fintona alumni out there in the world doing what they do well.

I was delighted to watch a small group of Year 9 girls work together in the last few weeks of Term 3, responding to the drought crisis affecting our farmers, to truly make a difference - not so much for the money that they raised, but for their tenacity and teamwork to not only achieve but exceed their goal.

It is heart-warming to see our teachers who are passionate about educating, inspiring curiosity, challenging, mentoring and caring for our students, encouraging them to become young women who strive to be the best they can be, whatever their passion. Together, we will nurture and challenge Fintona girls so they know that anything is possible.

ELC New physical education and mindfulness initiatives spark joy in children

At

Fintona ELC, we support a holistic approach to learning which emphasises the importance of the social-emotional, physical, cognitive and psychological wellbeing of our children.

This year, two new initiatives have been implemented in the ELC that help contribute to the holistic education of our children. The K4 Physical Education program has been a successful and meaningful addition to our specialist line-up and the children look forward to their sessions with Junior Campus PE teacher Mrs Amy D’Angelo every week. Research shows us that early childhood physical education is important and improves more than just a child’s physical wellness - it also assists and improves mental and emotional development. Our children have participated in a variety of planned physical experiences as part of the PE curriculum this year including a Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) and Gymnastics Program. Not only have the children enjoyed their sessions, but their skills, physicality and confidence have also grown.

Pre-Prep children met Mindfulness expert and educator Janet Etty-Leal. Mindfulness builds resilience in children by developing the skills to help them to cope better with stress, as well as enabling them to engage more 4

fully with themselves and their world. In her session, Janet introduced the children and teachers to the practice of Mindfulness and modelled some very practical techniques that could be used within the classroom. These techniques are designed to help develop children’s emotional literacy, cultivate a creative and curious mindset, and enhance their ability to focus and self-regulate. The children have continued to practice Mindfulness in their classrooms daily, participating in relaxation and meditative sessions during their day.

It has been a joy to see the wonderful ways the children are benefiting from these educational initiatives and we are confident that they will carry many of these new skills with them as they continue their educational journey.

Junior School

Learning with meaning and action

In

the International Baccalaureate setting in our Junior School, students assume control and empowerment of their environment, and the actions they choose to take, as a result of their learning and values – we call this Learner Agency.

The International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme defines Learner Agency as “… the power to take meaningful and intentional action, and acknowledges the rights and responsibilities of the individual, supporting voice, choice and ownership for everyone in the learning community.”

One goal of agency is student action – in social justice, contribution, social enterprise, and advocacy for example. By

exercising agency, students take ownership of their experiences, make choices, voice ideas and opinions, and reflect on their development as a global citizen.

Students make anything possible by focussing on what needs to be done and how they can improve their situation as well as the lives of others.

This year, students and families in the Junior School supported their community by taking action in various ways. They donated coats and runners to people experiencing homelessness, and the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day breakfasts raised money for schools affected by bushfires.

Girls took action to improve their world or make abstract ideas possible or concrete. In Prep, the girls inquired into recycling and waste creating an artwork made of recycled items. Taking care of our environment was further promoted by using recycling bins in classrooms and office areas and regularly composting, led by our Year 4 girls. Year 1 students delivered letters around the Junior

School with suggestions about improving the physical environment and other ideas, which were discussed and implemented. Girls in Year 2 continued to harvest the vegetable garden and enjoyed the rewards of their labour at their Veggie Market. Year 3 students engaged in STEM activities turning their designs of discarded items into a toy that had purpose.

With so much student action, our Junior School students are certainly empowered thinkers and active global citizens.

Middle School

Sensational success as students progress to next round at Yale University for World Scholar’s Cup

to inspire in young people a love of learning, confidence in new skills and a sense of global citizenship.

Fintona

entered the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) for the first time in 2018 with some extraordinary results - six of our students have been invited to participate in the final round, The Tournament of Champions at Yale University in Connecticut, USA between 14 and 24 November.

The World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) is an international academic competition, which began in 2007 and takes place all over the world. Students must qualify at each round of the tournament to proceed through all three rounds; the Regional Round, the Global Round and The Tournament of Champions at Yale University.

The goal of the competition is 6

Fintona entered five teams of three Year 8 students, who competed at the Regional Rounds held at Genazzano College in May. The competition included a number of academic challenges - debating, collaborative writing, the scholar’s bowl and the scholar’s challenge which are based on the academic disciplines of Maths, Science, History, Literature, Arts and Social Sciences.

Over three days, the students’ confidence, interest and engagement grew, further fuelled by their outstanding achievements. They were awarded numerous silver and gold medals and trophies in both individual and team categories.

Three teams qualified for the Global Round and began the

challenge of preparation around the theme ‘An Entangled World’, where the students were required to research a number of highly advanced topics such as: the history of diplomacy, human relationships, black markets, and the science of memory, as well as the literary works of many authors, poets and playwrights; all in addition to their regular Year 8 curriculum.

Our teams attended one of the Global Rounds which was held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in August – we were amazed to see the auditorium with over 1600 students from 27 different countries!

In addition to the high level of competition there were several community building events such as a scavenger hunt, talent show and cultural fair. These activities allowed the WSC students to connect with students from many different

backgrounds and experiences and establish life-long friendships.

The students’ positivity, focus and energy was truly inspiring.

According to Year 8 student Livia Tropea, who was named best debater in Victoria in the Regional Round, “It was like a community that shared similar interests and was open to new things.”

Based on this success, and the rewards and learnings for both students and teachers, we hope to enter teams in World Scholar’s Cup in future years.

Japan Study Tour A wonderful opportunity for social and cultural immersion

In

the September holidays, our group of 14 girls began our journey on the Japan Study Tour. Throughout the first week, we visited many temples and shrines, educational centres, museums, theme parks, shopping centres and restaurants in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima and Yokohama. We were also given rare opportunities to witness traditional ceremonies, battle against sumo wrestlers and stay in a traditional Japanese guesthouse, which were only some of the many highlights of the trip.

Most importantly, we had the chance to go to our sister school, Yokohama Eiwa, where we participated in classes with our respective host sisters, as well as special extra-curricular activities organised for us. At Eiwa, we created everlasting friendships and memories.

JACQUELINE WINS FIRST PRIZE IN FRENCH COMPETITION

Congratulations to Jacqueline Motet who won the Year 11 First Prize in Victoria in the French competition, Le Concours Lycéen where she performed a 3-4 minute informal conversation (Year 11 division) in front of experienced French teachers and students from other schools.

SENSATIONAL SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH RESULTS

Congratulations to our amazing Year 5 to 8 students, many of whom were presented with medals and bursaries on 27 October for their Science Talent Search (STS) projects. Congratulations also to Year 8 students Shivangi Kakkar, Livia Tropea and Maya Martin whose research projects have been selected by STS judges for entry into the prestigious BHP Billiton Science and Engineering 2018 Awards. Well done and good luck.

Our dedicated staff also received two special awards. We congratulate Ms Lara Dresser (Year 6 Teacher) who won a Peter Craig School Award which recognises the high quality of entries submitted over the breadth of sections in the competition and Ms Christa Ackermann (Science Co-ordinator) who won a Hugh McKnight Encouragement Award for her efforts co-ordinating the high quality of the projects offered.

ELIZABETH M BUTT PUBLIC SPEAKING AWARD – GRACE HORDERN, YEAR 10

Every year, all students from Year 6 to 11 participate in the Elizabeth M. Butt Public Speaking Competition. The program was the vision of Miss Butt, Headmistress from 1963 to 1992, who felt that Fintona girls should be equipped with the skills to communicate with poise and confidence when, as young women, they take their place in community life.

The program is staged in three tiers, Years 6 and 7 (Informative), Years 8 and 9 (Persuasive) and Years 10 and 11 (Interpretive).

In class, each girl researches her topic and presents her speech with a short list being selected for the speaking award event.

The 2018 overall winner, Grace Hordern, spoke passionately about voyeuristic entertainment, highlighting past and present examples and touching on the selfie generation.

SCHOOL CONSULS’ FINAL ADDRESS TO VALEDICTORY

For their final address to the Fintona community, School Consuls Gayatri Chaturvedi and Sameena Pavri-Thomas left an emotional mark with humour and heart.

“While the [Year 12] year is often painted to be some sort of sadistic villain that laughs manically at the misfortunes of others, this year has definitely shaped up to be electrifyingly mind-blowing in the most positive way.”

“Fintona truly has given us irreplaceable opportunities which have all helped us to grow and become the strong, resilient and independent young women we now are.”

In thanking their teachers, “…despite hair-loss inducing amounts of stress, you have graciously supported us throughout the years with such wisdom and guidance that can only ever be rivalled by the wise and worldly wizard Professor Albus Dumbledore.”

“As we, the class of 2018, take our last steps at Fintona, we take our first steps in the unknown world beyond, embarking on a journey that can take us anywhere. We do know however, that no matter where we end up, we’ll never forget the adventures we’ve shared.”

Dame Beryl Beaurepaire AC, DBE

The Fintona community is deeply saddened by the passing of a fine Fintonian and a great Australian, Dame Beryl Beaurepaire (Bedggood ‘40) AC, DBE, on Wednesday 24 October 2018. We reflect on her many achievements and extraordinary life.

(1970-1986), Chair of the Federal Women’s Committee (1974-1976) and Convenor of the first National Women’s Advisory Council (1978-1982) as well as being Vice President of the Victorian Division of the Liberal Party from 1976 to 1986.

Dame Beryl was a community worker, Patron and a leading figure in the Women’s Rights movement. Completing her education at Fintona in 1940, under the influence of Margaret Cunningham, she was motivated by her Principal stating ‘you can do anything’. Dame Beryl certainly took this to heart as is exemplified by the long list of achievements of this remarkable woman. In 1941 Dame Beryl enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air force (WAAAF), applying for the meteorological section.

Initially rejected on account of her gender, her persistence and a determination to become a scientist resulted in her appointment as a meteorological observer.

This was a prediction of things to come.

In addition, Dame Beryl was a member of the Australian Children’s Television Foundation Board (1982-1988), The Board of Victoria’s 150th Authority (1982-1987) and a member of the Australian Bicentennial Multicultural Foundation (1989-1992). From 1985 to 1993, she was Chair of the Australian War Memorial Council and then the Chair of the Australian War Memorial Fund Raising Committee (1993).

After her marriage to Ian Beaurepaire in early 1946 and following the birth of twin sons in 1947, Dame Beryl became involved in community and charity work. As Lady Mayoress (1965-1967) she recognised she could make a difference and fought against the sexism and gender segregation at Mayoral functions and brought about change, creating controversy and establishing precedents in council matters.

This increased her public profile and subsequently saw her serve a number of organisations in a variety of capacities. She was a member of the National Executive YWCA (1969-1977), Vice President of the Citizen’s Welfare Service of Victoria GREAT THINGS COME FROM A SMALL PACKAGE

A student at Fintona from 1931 to 1940, Dame Beryl joined the Fintona Board of Management in 1964, becoming Chair of the Board from 1974 to 1987. She was also a life member of the OFA, served on the OFA Committee and was a School Company member, highlighting her strong affiliation and thorough knowledge of the School throughout her life. Dame Beryl was Patron to numerous community organisations including: Children First Foundation since 2000, and since 1999 Peninsula Hospice Service, Palliative Care (Vic), Victorian College of the Arts, Epilepsy Foundation of Victorian, Australia Against Child Abuse and from 1996 Peninsula Health Care and Portsea’s Children’s Camp.

As a pioneer, Dame Beryl brought women of diverse backgrounds and political allegiance together. She was steadfast in her pursuit of equal pay and opportunity, childcare, and the right to safe abortion.

Her recognition by the Australian Government for her outstanding contribution to society was well deserved.

Dame Beryl was adamant that a good education gave girls confidence and is essential for anyone aspiring to a leadership role. Dame Beryl showed her leadership abilities, in her school days, as a prefect and eager participant in co-curricular and sporting programs. She epitomised the School’s motto, Age Quod Agis. In 2007, Dame Beryl stated, ‘I hope I have helped to give women more confidence in themselves – to just try’. Perseverance, determination, ambition, resilience and preparation are among the many attributes she displayed. Her belief in the value of education was evident in her lifetime commitment and service to Fintona, and fittingly, The Dame Beryl Beaurepaire Girl who makes a Difference to the Life of the School Award, which is awarded annually, recognises girls who exhibit the characteristics, qualities and engagement, as are synonymous with Dame Beryl.

Our sincere condolences to Dame Beryl’s family, including her sons Donald and John and her two granddaughters Emma (‘94) and Sarah (‘96) who both attended Fintona.

We are so appreciative and grateful to have known such an extraordinary Australian woman.

This year’s School Play, an adaptation by Anne Coulter Martens of L. Frank Baum’s classic story, The Wizard of Oz, was presented before two sold out audiences on 6 and 7 September in the Margaret Cunningham Hall. Over 80 girls from Years 5 to Year 12 participated on-stage and behind-the-scenes in areas of make-up design, backstage and front of house to bring this wonderful tale to life.

The production featured an array of inspired and truly magical moments, which were beautifully complemented by live music, contemporary dance and colour set and costumes.

In essence, Dorothy’s journey from Kansas to Oz and back again is one of self-discovery, realisation and hope. Indeed, it is only when her home is threatened that she gains a true appreciation of it.

For us, home can come to mean many things.

Ultimately, in our production of The Wizard of Oz, home is knowing that who you are is enough. Joining Dorothy on her journey of self-discovery are The Scarecrow, The Tinman, The Lion and her trusty companion, Toto all of whom are also on the search for something they already have: brains, a heart and courage.Never losing hope, Dorothy and her friends make their way along the yellow brick road to see The Wizard.

My heartfelt thanks to the many students and staff involved in bringing this classic tale to life.

Fintona girls are actively involved in supporting their community in all year levels, in many ways. The School resembled a farm for a day when students and staff put on their gumboots and check shirts, ‘Farm Fashion’, for the Buy a Bale fundraiser.

Organised by Year 9, the girls raised $1,272.75! What a magnificent effort!

On Friday 27 July, the annual Beef and Burgundy night was held in the Reid Studio, specifically for all the Fintona dads and male staff.

Organised by the Friends of Rowing, on Friday 24 August, students, staff and parents enjoyed quizzes, games and prizes, and a silent auction. Hosted by a professional quizmaster this sell out event was great fun with proceeds going toward the purchase of a new boat for our rowers.

It was an excellent opportunity for dads to get together, socialise and connect over a BBQ dinner and a refreshing ale or glass of wine.

Regardless of whether the dads had daughters in ELC or Year 12, it was lovely to see them from every year level attend and share stories about their families’ involvement in the Fintona community.

PINK STUMPS DAY October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and on Monday 22 October, our girls hosted the annual Pink Stumps Day to raise much needed funds and help place McGrath Breast Care Nurses wherever they’re needed.

The oval was awash with bright pink costumes as students and staff played a friendly game of cricket. On this occasion, the students were victorious by three runs.

It was wonderful to see our community support this cause by wearing pink and donating funds to such a worthy cause.

An amazing $1,231.60 was raised by our community-driven girls on the day.

As the current longest serving teacher at Fintona, Heather Rowe retires at the end of 2018 after 33 years of dedicated service.

“This is what I will be wearing every day.”

These words are from Trish Leigh presenting at a Year 7 Camp Information Evening as she holds up a pair of shorts that have seen better days, are faded and have been tinged by the red sands of the Northern Territory. This typifies Trish’s inimitable style; leading by example, prioritising substance, always practical and full of common sense.

For over 28 years, Sue Peat has been the friendly face people see first when visiting the Junior Campus Office.

Over her years at Fintona, she has taught across a range of levels in the Science and Mathematics faculties and held the position of Science Co-ordinator. She truly exemplifies how to consistently do your best at whatever crosses your path each day.

Heather has a love of the environment and nature and contributed to the Outdoor Education program through supervising camping and bush walking and organising ski trips. Her great passion has been teaching VCE Chemistry which she has done with great success, inspiring generations of students to pursue further studies and careers in science, medicine and engineering. Conscious of fostering the skills of all students, Heather planned detailed sequential experiences to lead girls through complex concepts. Her teaching is characterised by meticulous organisation, attention to detail and care for the individual student.

Heather is planning a retirement full of travel adventures. We wish her well and thank her for the significant and extensive contribution she has made to the Fintona community.

Trish started working at Fintona in 2009 and will retire at the end of 2018. During this time, Trish has been an outstanding Head of Middle School, Year 6 classroom teacher and Year 7 and 8 mathematics teacher. Prior to starting at Fintona, Trish was involved in writing mathematics textbooks bringing a wealth of knowledge to her teaching, particularly in the critical area of problem solving. She has been instrumental in developing and setting up mathematics extension programs across the Middle School, teaching a range of strategies and providing in depth, motivating experiences.

In her role as Head of Middle School, Trish kept a close eye on all the girls and was a thoughtful and calm source of wisdom to both parents and staff. Constantly aware of the well-being of students, Trish introduced extensive transition programs, developed a cohesive Middle School curriculum and embedded the Year 7 trip to Central Australia as a powerful learning opportunity. We thank Trish for all that she has contributed to Fintona and wish her well in her retirement adventures.

She has paid personal attention and care to each student with a kind and approachable attitude. Sue’s reassuring manner and warm smile always ensured that the children felt cared for and loved. The parents in the Junior School and Early Learning Centre have often commented on Sue’s promptness and ability to solve any problem. Her friendly voice on the other end of the phone allayed any concerns or questions from parents or visitors.

To the staff on the Junior Campus, Sue has been a reliable staff member who makes their lives easier by assisting them with their administrative requirements. She has worked with four Heads of Junior School and four Heads of Early Learning Centre over her time at Fintona. Most of all, Sue has been a friend to all. She loved to laugh with everyone and share her passion for the Geelong Football Club.

Now, as a grandmother of a growing family, she has decided to travel a little more and move interstate to spend time with her family. We wish Sue, and her husband John, all the very best. Sue will be sorely missed.

Tuesday 28 August, the Reid Studio came alive with the annual music concert reimagined as the Ensemble Soiree featuring percussion, violin, guitar, bassoon, strings, harp, clarinet, flute, piano, voice and more in various forms of solo, duets, trios and ensembles, with music from Mozart to the theme from Harry Potter, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Abba.

The thoroughly enjoyable program showcased Fintona’s many talented musicians and the breadth of musical opportunities available, including Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Buick Strings, Fintona Chorale, Flute Ensemble, Buick Band, Tourmont Band and Tourmont Strings and several impressive solo performances. Congratulations to all the performers and their teachers on a wonderful evening of music.

World Challenge Costa Rica proves anything is possible

We were also afforded the opportunity to play with the local children and learn how to weave wicker baskets.

Sloths, toucans, monkeys, dolphins, humpback whales, butterflies and insects galore is what we encountered in Costa Rica, one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, making it the perfect location for a once in a life time adventure.

Following our project phase, we headed down to the Osa Peninsula for our trek which involved hiking across the Peninsula through dense jungle.

Throughout the five days we were challenged with constantly wet boots, mud, and steep ascents. It was all worth it though for the wildlife, scenery and satisfaction felt by all upon reaching the beach at Carete.

World Challenge is unlike any other school tour in the sense that the students have total control of the itinerary, budget and day to day organisation. From the minute we stepped off the plane in San Jose, the students were in control booking taxis to our accommodation, organising meals and planning the following day’s activities.

After an initial administrative day in San Jose, the team began their acclimation phase which included hikes through cloud forests, zip wiring above the canopies and swimming in hot springs and waterfalls.

Our project was undoubtedly a highlight for the team as it provided us with the opportunity to make strong connections with the local community of Santa Maria de Dota. We spent several days helping out the local primary school, completing much needed maintenance work including planting trees, laying down turf and 16

We concluded our trip with some rest and relaxation which involved white water rafting, kayaking and visiting the local markets. We were also fortunate enough to witness both humpback whales and dolphins.

World Challenge is certainly a once in a life time experience and something that the team will never forget!

Careers Evening

Some of the best careers start right here

The

annual Careers Evening was a wonderful opportunity to listen to the stories and career journeys of sixteen Old Fintonians now working in a variety of careers.

Over 130 Year 9 to 12 students and their parents created a real buzz in the room with lots of interactions between the Old Fintonians and our current students and their parents.

Our sincere thanks to our speakers, Associate Professor Jill Sewell AM (’65) Paediatrician, Royal Children’s Hospital; Georgie Stayches (’93), Founder & Managing Director of Fetching Events & Communications; Meredith Kennedy (’02), Lawyer, Maddocks; Lucinda Hartley (’99), Town Planner/Social Entrepreneur.

Four keynote speakers inspired the audience with their experience, advice and variety of career trajectories. Many had had twists and turns in their careers and they stressed that so often one had to be open to happenstance and just be prepared to make changes that had not been planned.

You can read more about each of these speakers on pages 25-26 (OFA section).

Spanning the areas of allied health, law, urban planning, business, marketing and entrepreneurship, the former students highlighted relationship building, risk taking, being your best advocate and taking opportunities when they present, as some of the reasons for their success.

ELC-VCE Art and Design Show 2

The

annual ELC-VCE Art & Design Show opened to a large audience of parents and students who enjoyed the varied work of our talented students across all year levels.

The colourful and engaging exhibition took over the entire arts precinct for a week and featured painting, drawing, photography, construction, ceramics, textiles and multimedia.

Open to the broader community, the exhibition highlighted Fintona’s Art and Design teaching and learning commitment to a relevant and engaging curriculum, encouraging the continued growth of each student to develop and articulate a range of important life skills including analytical and critical thinking, self-reflection and creative problem solving.

The works on display were produced through a variety of production methods with a broad range of age and stage themes and ideas.

Congratulations to all the artists and designers on a fabulous exhibition.

Fintona Writers’ Festival

On

Reading and writing make everything possible

the surface, the biennial Fintona Writers’ Festival celebrates reading, literature and excellence in writing. Yet it is much more than that. This year, all students from Prep to Year 12 attended sessions given by wonderful authors, illustrators, cartoonists and journalists, each of whom create the stories that entertain, inform, challenge and stretch us.

Each student attended at least two sessions. Whether listening to a children’s picture book author, a magazine editor or observing an actress bringing Shakespeare to life, there was an abiding theme; the power of fiction to imagine whole new worlds and draw readers into the lives and experiences of others.

During the week-long event, the girls: •

heard from famous Australian critic Peter Craven, who opened the Festival during Assembly. Peter’s speech managed to seize the attention of the whole Year 5 to 12 audience, simply by uttering those two magic words: Harry Potter. Of course, he had plenty of other things to say. ‘Embrace the difficult pleasure’, he advised the Year 12 girls in a later session. There is unique pleasure to be had in engaging with and immersing oneself in the language of classic literature - difficult, possibly, but always rewarding.

Our distinguished visitors loved interacting with the students, many of whom volunteered to assist as ushers, introducers and thanking speakers following the presentations. The School is indebted to the enthusiasm and support of the English Faculty who on a daily basis teach, encourage and coax the girls to persist in reading and developing their identities as writers. Especially though, we are grateful to Ms Fiona Longfield, Head of Library Services, and all the Resource Centre staff on both Campuses, who organised and even catered for this huge calendar tradition.

Q&A Meet Our Teachers Alex Clarke Alex Clarke Life is one big adventure for our Physical and Outdoor Education Teacher and Rowing Co-ordinator.

How long have you worked at Fintona?

I first came to Fintona as a second year student teacher in 2011. The following year I was offered the Rowing Coordinator position and I haven’t looked back! I officially began teaching at Fintona in 2016.

What do you love about your job?

I became a teacher because I wanted to have a positive impact on others. My favourite part of the job is the feeling of belonging in the Fintona community, and watching our students grow and develop into strong independent women through the programs that the School offers.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about promoting physical activity and encouraging all of my students to develop a love of being active, whether that be through a traditional sport such as rowing, or in other ways such as dance and hiking.

Where did you get your love of sport and outdoors?

I was fortunate to attend a school that offered amazing programs in both areas. I love the team aspect of both sport and outdoor education and the feeling of achieving something that previously seemed impossible. Through both programs I made many of my fondest memories and, of course, lifelong friends.

What is your favourite sport and/or outdoor activity?

It would have to be a four way tie between rowing, running, surfing and skiing! I love any sport that involves going fast on water. I row for Melbourne University Boat Club and run nearly every day.

What is the most adventurous thing you have done?

I think adventure is being pushed out of your comfort zone to achieve a rewarding experience. The most adventurous thing I have done recently would have to be trekking across the jungle in Costa Rica on the School’s recent World Challenge trip.

The adventure involved steep climbs which required scrambling up rocks, river crossing aplenty, and a whole lot of mud. It was all worth it.

We saw amazing wildlife including sloths and macaws as well as experiencing the wildness of the jungle first hand.

What is your favourite travel destination?

That is such a tough question!

This year I have been fortunate to travel to Hong Kong, Italy, England and Costa Rica - all were amazing travel destinations in their own unique way. However, I can’t go past the food in Italy or the biodiversity of Costa Rica. I think if anything, this year has spurred a major travel bug within me and I am keen to see

as much of the world as possible with Nepal and North America being the next two destinations on my bucket list. I am also a firm believer that we have so many amazing travel destinations in our own back yard. I love getting down to Aireys Inlet, and exploring the high country of Victoria.

How do you like to spend the weekends and term breaks?

Throughout the summer terms, the majority of my weekends are spent on the banks of the Barwon River at rowing regattas. When I’m not coaching I love going for a long run followed by brunch, or taking the opportunity to get out of Melbourne ideally somewhere with snow or surf!

Katie Tribe Katie Tribe Katie Tribe leads Fintona’s curriculum support and learning enhancement program and has a passion for working with students to harness their strengths and unlock their potential.

How did you come to work in Curriculum Support?

I have worked in many different girls’ schools both locally and internationally for the past 15 years. I began teaching English Literature and Psychology in the UK, however found myself taking on a number of leadership, pastoral and academic roles, before relocating to Australia.

You have a Masters in Special Education and Gifted Education. What is your special interest?

My final Masters’ thesis was on girls’ self-efficacy in gifted education. I am very passionate about the learning process and work with students of all abilities to harness their strengths and unlock their potential.

What favourite things do you have in your teacher toolkit?

The girls at Fintona know I am repeatedly advocating for the use of flashcards, mind maps, audio books and other learning tools to enhance student knowledge and deepen their understanding.

What special activities do you get involved in in your role?

I have been part of many different academic extension and enrichment activities such as Tournament of Minds, Future Problem Solving and Da Vinci Decathlon, and this year was my first year being involved in the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC).

What do you love about your role?

I enjoy my role because we are a small school and we want to expose the girls to a wider community of like-minded students and a wider world of opportunity too. I enjoy helping them go beyond the curriculum and to apply what they learn in the classroom

more broadly. I feel very fortunate that my role allows me to work with and support students’ learning journeys.

What is your biggest passion?

The love of learning. I love watching girls activate their brain, extend their knowledge and enhance their understanding. It’s a powerful process and I feel very privileged to see that in action. It’s very rewarding.

What do you like to do on weekends and term breaks?

I love reading and travelling (either locally or overseas). I also spend a lot of time ferrying my two gorgeous children (Ruby and Harry) between sporting activities, playdates and birthday parties!

Obituary Jocelyn Davies (Camm ’52) 7/1/35 - 7/7/18 Jocelyn attended Fintona from 1948 to 1952. After Matric she studied to become a pharmacist and worked in this career for many years including after she had her two children, Alistair and Kathy.

Jocelyn was part of the group of Old Fintonians who raised money for the Red Cross, and then more recently the Mirabel Foundation.

Jocelyn will be greatly missed by her Fintona friends.

Old Fintonians share their knowledge at Careers Night This year’s Careers Evening featured sixteen Old Fintonians from a diverse range of professions including Investment Analyst, Company Director/Governance Consultant, Vet, Audiologist, and Lawyer.

The four keynote speakers, Jill Sewell AM Associate Professor (‘65), Georgie Stayches (‘93), Meredith Kennedy (‘02), and Lucinda Hartley (Gleadow ‘99) were an inspiration to students with their tips, advice and variety of career journeys. Here is a brief overview of their careers to date: Jill Sewell AM Associate Professor (’65) Paediatrician Jill studied medicine at the University of Melbourne (MBBS) and subsequently trained as a paediatrician through the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).

Jill has spent most of her working life at the Royal Children’s Hospital and is a Senior Consultant Paediatrician in the Centre for Community Child Health and Clinical Director of the Children’s Bioethics Centre. She is Chair of the Victorian Clinical Council, and President of the Australian Medical Council. She was the inaugural co clinical lead of the Victorian Paediatric Clinical Network and has also been on the Board of Alfred Health.

Georgie Stayches (’93) Founder & Managing Director After completing a Bachelor of Media Arts at Deakin University, Georgie commenced her career at the Australian Open Tennis in 1997. From there, her varied career has seen her work at media organisations including Channel Nine and Granada Television (London) as well as major events including the 2000 Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games, and 2002 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

After nearly 15 years working in the areas of events, communications and volunteer management, Georgie decided to focus on working within the community sector and founded her own company, Fetching Events & Communications in 2009. Clients have included Ardoch Youth Foundation, Australian Paralympic Committee, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Crimestoppers Victoria, Make-A-Wish Australia, and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

Her work in the not-for-profit sector has also extended to her role as Chair and board member of Better Hearing Australia, a member of the Country Women’s Association, and volunteer at the Homies Homework Help Club.

Jill has had a long standing interest in supporting the careers of women in medicine. She has recently become a participant in the Homeward Bound program, which aims to support leadership and advocacy for women in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine). In 2005, Jill was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to child health.

Meredith Kennedy (’02) Lawyer After completing Year 12 in 2002, Meredith spent a gap year in Belgium with the aim of learning French. She then studied a combined Degree in Arts/Law (majoring in History) at Monash University.

Her first job after graduating was as a Judge’s Associate at the County Court. Meredith then worked in a graduate position at the Fair Work Ombudsman learning more about employment law. Currently on maternity leave, Meredith has worked at three law firms as an employment lawyer and has been at Maddocks since 2014 where she is now a Senior Associate.

Lucinda Hartley (Gleadow ’99) Urban Designer / Social Entrepreneur

Over the past decade, she has been involved in kick starting a range of social change initiatives including slum resettlement projects with the United Nations and delivering more than 100 neighbourhood improvement projects in Australia through her consultancy, CoDesign Studio. Lucinda’s latest venture with her co-founder, is Neighbourlytics, a company that uses a social data analytics platform to enable decision makers to understand how cities work.

Lucinda’s work has been widely recognised receiving more than a dozen urban planning awards. She was also named by The Age newspaper as one of Melbourne’s Top 100 most influential people.

Lucinda recently featured in an interview in the July issue of Vogue Australia, spoke at the Vogue Codes Summit in Sydney, and has also been selected as a 2018 Westpac Social Change Fellow.

Old Fintonian appointed Judge of County Court of Victoria Congratulations to Julie Condon (’87) who is now a Judge of the County Court of Victoria. After completing Year 12, Julie studied a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne and a Master of Laws from Monash University.

Julie has worked for over 20 years as a barrister in criminal defence. She is an honorary lifetime member of Reprieve Australia, an organisation providing legal representation and humanitarian assistance to prisoners. She is also a member of the Criminal Bar Association and was appointed Queen’s Council in 2017.

Julie has also led advocacy workshops in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu for law students and legal professionals and has worked as an international law consultant and advocate at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal at The Hague.

Lucinda gained a Bachelor of Arts and Science from Monash University, then postgraduate study in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Melbourne. Having started her career as an urban designer, she set aside a traditional career to embrace her passion for making cities more socially inclusive and connected.

OAM awarded to Helen Coulson (Duncan ’36) OAM Congratulations to Old Fintonian, Helen Coulson who has received an Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to the community of Echuca - Moama. The award is certainly well deserved as Helen has made a significant contribution to her community. Her involvement includes founding the Echuca Historical Society, membership of Friends of Old Moama, President of the Friends of Echuca Library, advocate for the Campaspe Regional Library and new library, committee member of former Advisory Council (Shire of Campaspe), consultant for the Heritage Advisory Committee (Murray Shire Council), Director and joint Manager of the Port of Echuca and supporter of the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre. Over the past 60 years, Helen has also written a number of books and publications on local history.

Helen was awarded a Government Heritage Volunteer Award by the NSW Government in 2011 and in 2015 was a recipient of the Living Legend award for significant contributions to the tourism and hospitality industry in the Echuca - Moama region, Echuca Moama and District Tourism.

Helen has fond memories of her time at Fintona, she still lives at home and is looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday in December. The OFA wishes Helen a very Happy Birthday.

GREAT THINGS COME FROM A SMALL PACKAGE

English teacher turns her literary hand to writing novels Teacher and author, Lynette McClenaghan (Bonollo ’79) has this year had her sixth book published, ‘Dark Elixir – Three Sinister Supernatural Stories’, a work of fiction combining steampunk and horror across three tales.

Lynette previously worked as an English teacher whilst running her own tutoring business. In late 2016, Lynette closed the tutoring service, moved to Ballarat and returned to casual and contract classroom teaching, while completing her latest book. During the launch of ‘Dark Elixir’, Lynette featured on the ABC Ballarat radio breakfast show and in The Courier Ballarat.

Margaret Ross (Reid ‘51) AM

“Margaret acknowledges the importance of her schooling where the respect for others was seen as paramount; this developed into a genuine interest in people and the necessity to connect with society. ”

A lifetime of giving Behind the quiet, unassuming façade of Margaret Ross there is a history of philanthropy and service to the community. For many years, Margaret has maintained an ethos of giving to and supporting the community in which she lives, as well as to wider society.

Growing up in the post war years was difficult; the impact of war on all people and the community is often underestimated. Many adjustments had to be made; new values and customs had to be adopted. Margaret believes that this climate contributed to her resilience, independence and the awareness of the need to help others.

After completing school at Fintona, Margaret was advised by Miss Cunningham to enrol at university.

Margaret, however, had a different idea.

She knew, from an early age, that she wanted to pursue a career in nursing which she subsequently did, completing her training at The Melbourne School of Nursing. This defiant action demonstrated Margaret’s determined and independent streak.

Margaret acknowledges the importance of her schooling where the respect for others was seen as paramount; this developed into a genuine interest in people and the necessity to connect with society. She also realises the value of positive role models in one’s life and Margaret has strong recollections of the way in which her father constantly stressed the need to serve society. He felt that when one was in the position to do so, one should give back to the community and that anonymity was important, as it was the action that counted, not its origin or benefactor. In addition, Margaret states that her husband, Ian, is a wonderful, constant support and this has enabled Margaret to continue her commitment and meritorious service.

As Margaret is now retired, she enjoys spending her time with Ian, their four children Anne (‘74), Belinda (‘76) James and Philip, their ten grandchildren including Jennifer Grindrod (‘01) and four great grandchildren. Margaret is also able to extend her passion for the Arts and frequently attends classical music concerts, the ballet and opera.

In 2001, Margaret was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Her contribution to all aspects of society is enormous and includes service to Australia’s Virtual Herbarium Trust, the Australian War Memorial Foundation, The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute as well as fund-raising for this organisation and The Centre for Eye Research. Margaret also served as Chair of The Board of Management of Fintona Girls’ School from 1987 to May 1996; her service to her old school has been exemplary and she is still heavily involved at Fintona and is seen attending various events regularly.

Her energy, generosity and ongoing commitment in so many avenues is a positive role model. Margaret serves as an inspiration to us all.

PROMOTING CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING THROUGH TECHNOLOGY Thank you to all the Fintona Community who have supported this year’s Annual Giving Appeal. It’s not too late to donate to the Appeal.

This year our Annual Giving is focused on purchasing small scale technology to provide students with hands on opportunities for exploration, design and problem solving across STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) subjects.

Technology will include a state of the art laser cutter to mark, engrave and cut a wide range of materials with high precision and complement the School’s 3D printer. Wearable technology is also on our wish list and will include small scale electronics for students to code and program for clothing.
