An upbeat holiday mood people do, I look forward to the holiday season and the end of the year. It’s a time to relax, reflect, rejuvenate, and spend time with my loved ones after a busy year.

Wise craft Local talents to watch

“Our products have a Nordic look – they’re very popular in Scandinavia,” says Miks Balodis, frontman of Vaidava Ceramics.

King of clay TH IS M AN has brought a potted revolution to the sleepy village of Vaidava in north-eastern Latvia. In the six years that Miks Balodis has been running Vaidava Ceramics, what was once a rundown Soviet pottery workshop has blossomed into a high-end brand coveted for its clean, ascetic design.

“The factory was founded in 1980 and it became our family business after Latvia gained independence in 1991,” says Balodis. “In the past three years we have moved beyond flowerpots in a fresh, contemporary direction.”

One thing hasn’t changed, however – Vaidava swears by tradition. All items are handcrafted by artisans using local red clay and ancient Latvian techniques.

True to its name, the Earth Collection combines silky-smooth terracotta bowls with beautiful ashwood platters. The exterior is unglazed, yet fully dishwasher-proof. The Eclipse Collection designed

by Laima Grigone is the clay equivalent of the Little Black Dress – ultra-elegant for any occasion.

“We use the terra sigillata technique to achieve a high satin gloss. Our products are an interesting mix of ancient artisanry, functionality, and fresh design – a rare combination that has put our small village on the world map,” describes Balodis.

The factory has a design outlet and hosts workshops where visitors can make their own plate to take home as a souvenir. Vaidava items are available in Finland through Artek, Gumbostrand Konst & Form, and Casuarina. 

onuments to Delhi’s multicultural and multifaith history are scattered throughout the city. The Sufi branch of Islam has been a vivid component of that historical mosaic, in Delhi and the rest of South Asia, for a millennium.

Today, the Nizamuddin Dargah is colourful proof that Sufi culture and traditions are still strong in the Indian capital. Tucked away at the heart of a maze of alleyways, close to the honking chaos of a major urban thoroughfare, this holy Sufi site feels disconnected from the world.

The Dargah, or mausoleum, of the 13th-century Sufi saint Nizamuddin forms the core of this bustling labyrinthine neighbourhood. To reach it, you wander through the steam and smoke arising from street-side vendors of tandoori-roasted chicken, kebabs, naan bread, and biryani. The pungent food

gives way to the aroma of rose petals, glistening with sprinkled water and heaped next to brightly coloured shrouds, to be laid as offerings at the tomb.

Etiquette requires visitors to take off their shoes and to cover their heads.

But like Sikhism, the Sufi faith is known for its inclusivity and all visitors are welcome, although photographing the inner sanctum of the mausoleum might attract some disapproval.

On Thursday evenings at dusk, the crowds gather to sit in the inner shrine to listen to devotional Sufi songs and music played on harmoniums and tablas, a wonderful incense-shrouded event. Women congregate reading from scriptures, while men take turns to pray and place the shrouds over the tomb, screened by the mausoleum.

One estimate puts the daily attendance at the Dargah and the surrounding mosques and tombs as high as 50,000, a number that can double on Thursdays. So this can hardly be described as one of Delhi’s best-kept secrets. But as an intense essential Delhi experience, it’s hard to beat. 

This holy Sufi site feels disconnected from the world.

California dreamers Chef-gardener couple Kyle and Katina Connaughton bring an imaginative farm-restaurant concept to Sonoma.

onoma Wine Country in northern California has always been overshadowed by its neighbouring Napa. In terms of fine dining, there was little happening until 2016, when Kyle and Katina Connaughton launched the Single Thread Farm Restaurant & Inn. Located in Healdsburg, the concept is hailed the most ambitious opening seen by northern California in ages.

“Our mission is to offer a kaiseki experience using local and seasonal ingredients,” says Kyle Connaughton, referring to the traditional Japanese multi-course dinners that take the dining experience to the level of an art form.

“Sonoma is the perfect location.

People are making excellent wines and producing fantastic ingredients, but they don’t take themselves too seriously,” he notes.

Just a few months after its opening, Single Thread received the highest four-star rating from the San Francisco Chronicle’s Michael Bauer and two stars from Michelin. Knowing Kyle Connaughton’s background, this comes as no surprise. He has spent the last >

twenty years working his way through the best restaurants in the world alongside the likes of Japanese master chef Yoshihiro Murata and French culinary artist Michel Bras in Japan.

Starting their own restaurant on a small farm was the couple’s long-time dream.

After several years in Japan and the UK, they finally moved back to California in 2012 to search for the perfect spot to combine cooking and gardening. Four years later, they discovered the ideal venue on the former site of a post office in downtown Healdsburg.

It’s easy to identify the gardener in the family: Katina – whom Kyle met at a hard-core punk concert in LA at the tender age of 15 – has her arms covered in tattoos of vegetables.

With a background in sustainable agriculture, she now oversees the Single Thread farm a few miles from the restaurant by the Russian River, where a former five-acre vineyard has been transformed into a blooming garden.

“Our aim is to grow at least 70 to 80 per cent of Single Thread’s produce on the farm. The rest is also locally sourced from Sonoma,” she says.

The farm’s seasonal offering forms the core of the restaurant’s eleven-course menu, combining Japanese-Californian kaiseki with French influences.

The cosmopolitan influences are also visible in the interior of the 50-seat restaurant, which seamlessly combines old-school Japanese aesthetics and understated rustic luxury. 

Nanjing on tap China’s former capital is home to some of the earliest craft beer in the country. And these are some of the “hoppiest” venues in town.

Julius Caesar Nanjing-based ST RAY B I R D was an early entrant on the Chinese craft beer scene, seven years ago. Despite the small size of the eponymous bar – there’s only seating for around 30 – it packs in 20 draught beers together with eight fermentation tanks.

Along with their own ales they have brews from their Nanjing-based compatriots Master Gao and Shantown on tap in this outpost in the Baijiahu 1912 complex. Brew master Xu Fei’s Julius IPA won a silver medal at the 2017 Brussels BeerChallenge.

The Godfather Without Gao Yan, founder of the M AST ER GAO brand beer, there might be no Chinese craft beer scene. This Nanjing-based brewer is ground zero.

His latest Master Gao brewhouse, housed in the 1912 nightlife area, boasts 24 taps including eight beers brewed on site. The remaining taps are filled with more of his own beers and a selection of other notable Chinese craft suds, including fellow local brand Shantown.

Old faithful One of the longest running bars in the city, recently relocated JI MMY’S offers up a slice of Americana right down to their ribs and burgers. Craft beers, both draught and bottled, come from Master Gao, Karl Strauss (US), Boulevard (US), and Mornington (Australia) breweries.

Screens keep the mainly expat crowd up to date with the major sports matches in the small new location on Shanghai Road.

Spicy tipple Beer is the perfect antidote to the numbing sensation from a Sichuan mala flavoured hotpot. At H EL LO B EER customers can choose from hundreds of bottled and canned American and European beers to accompany hotpot. Owner Jacky Chen, who claims to have over a thousand brews, started the place partly to educate Chinese people about beer. With its suburban Baijiahu 1912 location, the neighbourhood crowd easily fills up the 140 seats. Drinks range from fairly standard Leffe and Guinness right up to Altbayerischer Bierlikör, and Schorschbock reputedly the world’s strongest beer. 

In the Kalasatama district of Helsinki, ­Hannaleena Heiska works on a charcoal and camouflage creation.

“I’ve been working in this building for seven or eight years now, and in this space for four years. I could work in any space, but I think the location is important. It needs to be accessible, with enough peace and quiet, and not too much social activity because I need to focus.”

For Heiska preparing the materials also drives her work mentally.

“I try not to be too dependent on getting into a state of flow because I need to work anyways. And when I do get into that flow, well, it’s the best feeling.”

Hannaleena Heiska’s work is currently on show at the Susanne Petterson Gallery, Stockholm until December 22. Her next exhibition will be a retrospective show at the Turku Art Museum from 2 February to 19 May, 2019.

Painter and printmaker Jaakko Mattila has worked at his studio in the Suvilahti district of Helsinki for five years. His work explores the universe, physics, and colour so light is key.

“The light was more important than the space when I chose this studio.

Light is crucial when mixing colours−the quality of light is everything,” he says.

Modern digital trappings can be a big distraction to artists, so Mattila values focus and discipline.

“I try not to take the digital world in with me, even when it comes to music. I listen to vinyl or nothing at all. When I get into work mode, it takes me in, all my concentration. I come to the studio, make coffee, start mixing paint, and then go straight to it−full on painting.”

Jaakko Mattila is currently working on a show for the Herrick Gallery in London, taking place April 16–28 and for the London Original Print Fair at Royal Academy of Arts, taking place April 25–28.

Visual artist Karoliina ­Hellberg has recently moved to Suomenlinna from Vallila for a studio residency, so transitioning is on her mind.

“You don’t always know how a new space will affect your work. In this profession, you will move studio and country through residencies and you still need to carry on with your work,” she says.

Hellberg, who was recently awarded the ­Didrichsen Pro-Arte 2018 Award, has a very recognisable style with colourful paintings that often embrace space.

“I build images a bit like mental-collages−combining different images (found, imagined, and remembered).

I love the theme of interiors as it works as an actual space and also as a psychological place.”

As part of the Didrichsen Pro-Arte 2018 award, Karoliina Hellberg’s exhibition takes place at Helsinki’s Didrichsen Art Museum from January 25 until May 2019.

The French art of good living meets Michelin gastronomy in the piste-perfect Alpine resorts of Courchevel and Val d’Isère.

T

he French alpine resorts of Val d’Isère and Courchevel in the southwest Savoy region are pioneers of French winter tourism.

Founded in 1888, Val d’Isère is one of the world’s most famous winter holiday destinations, while younger Courchevel – the first ski resort to be built from scratch – has established itself as an A-list destination for international guests seeking ­luxury and indulgence.

Like everywhere in France, food plays a big part in the local ski culture – but in the Savoy region, it takes a particularly hearty form. The richness of Savoyard alpine cuisine originates from earlier times when the villages were isolated and the only way to survive winter was to produce and preserve your own food. Cheeses and meats are prominent, along with classics like Tartiflette, a hearty mountain dish combining potatoes, onions, bacon, local Reblochon cheese, and cream – the perfect energy bomb for an active, outdoorsy life, vow locals. >

Courchevel’s five distinct villages are named after their altitude. As a rule of thumb, the higher the village, the posher the atmosphere – and prices also tend to rise the further you go up the mountain.

In Courchevel 1852, the poshest and the highest of the five villages, the snow reaches roof level, while the art of alpine dining is taken to new heights of sophistication.

Visitors can splurge on the finest ­caviar, oysters, and champagne at Piero TT, a new restaurant opened by Michelin chef Pierre Gagnaire at Les ­Airelles, a five-star hotel housed in a ­traditional wooden chalet. Piero TT replaces ­Gagnaires’s previous two-star establishment in Courchevel – but there are still plenty of Michelin restaurants left at the resort (a total of 12 stars, to be precise).

One of them is L’Azimut in Courchevel Le Praz, an unpretentious bistro run by chef François Moureaux and his wife Sandrine as manager.

Keeping its star for eight years running is convincing proof of consistent quality, while a four-course menu comes at a very reasonable cost of 55 euros – a wallet-friendly alternative to the skyhigh prices of many other restaurants in the resort.

The mountainous Savoy region is not famed for its wines, however, local vintages seem to be well represented in every restaurant.

“Ten years ago they were practically unknown. The quality of the local

wine was poor and was mostly used for fondue. Now it’s a completely different story. Local wines are respected and so fashionable that many of the best producers sell out their whole production to local restaurants,” explains local tourism expert Natalie Faure.

CROCKPOT COMFORT If Courchevel represents the posh peak of ski dining, more down-to-earth options await in Val d’Isère, where venues like La Baraque offer a wide array of savoury options from oysters and seafood to hearty meat dishes throughout the day. Popular among locals, the reasonably priced brasserie hosts live music in the evenings. A stylish lunch can also be enjoyed at La Fruitière, which serves contemporary French comfort food and cheeses from all over the country. The place is usually packed, so come early or make a >

CALORIE BURNERS Although the two resorts are only 80 ­kilometres apart by road, Courchevel and Val d’Isère are very different in character. Purpose-built Courchevel has more to offer in terms of Michelin gastronomy and high-end shopping, while ski-focused Val d’Isère tends to attract a younger clientele with its lively after-ski scene.

Offering great snow and 150 kilometres of local slopes, Courchevel is part of Les Trois Vallées, the world’s largest ski area, comprising 600 kilometres of pistes linked by 165 lifts in total. The resort caters to beginners too, and there are free lifts in each of the five villages.

If skiing is not your thing, there is a brand-new toboggan run with a 450-metre vertical drop and average gradient of 15 per cent, as well as 18 kilometres of marked snowshoeing trails.

Courchevel 1850 also has its own iceskating rink.

outstanding piste grooming. For non-­ skiers there is array of activities from paragliding to dog sledding, as well as an ice-skating rink in the centre of the ­village and a gondola ride up the mountain.

FROM SLOPE TO STEAM ROOM After an active day outdoors, many ­skiers welcome an evening of pampering at a wellness spa, which are in plentiful supply at both resorts.

A variety of treatments are available at the Aquamotion centre near Courchevel Moriond, which has several indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, a salt water grotto, caldarium, and a centre with diving pools, water slides, rapids, and even a climbing wall and surfing area. Courchevel 1850 has a ­public fitness centre with a gym, sauna, and steam room. Most hotels offer spa facilities, some of which are open to the public for an entry fee.

Ski pass holders enjoy free entry to Val d’Isère’s Aqua Leisure Centre. The modern complex is centrally located in the village and easy to reach by foot

from most hotels, many of which offer in-house spa facilities.

And there’s nothing quite like the fresh mountain air to guarantee a good night’s sleep. One of the n ­ ewest of Courchevel’s nearly 50 hotels is ­Fahrenheit Seven, a relaxed four-star, 44-bedroom hotel with a small spa, ­elegant bar, and a restaurant with an open wood grill. As the hotel faces south to the slopes, the perfect spot to take your afternoon sunbath – or nap – is on your own balcony. 

How do you measure happiness?

raditionally, we have used income as a proxy indicator of individual happiness and GDP per capita to measure our progress as nations. We have basically been saying that money equals happiness. But while money may matter, it is not the only thing that contributes to our happiness.

Happiness is subjective, and working with subjective measures is difficult, but not impossible. We do it all the time when we gauge levels of stress, anxiety, and depression – which are also subjective. At the end of the day, it’s all about how we as individuals perceive and experience our lives.

What I care about in my research is how you feel about your life.

That is what counts. I believe you are the best judge of whether you are happy or not. How you feel is our metric – and then I try to understand why you feel that way. What are the common denominators for happy people?

Happiness can mean different things to different people. So, the first thing we must do is to break the concept of happiness down into its component parts. When we measure happiness we for example distinguish between being happy with your life (How happy are you overall?) and being happy in your life (How happy did you feel yesterday?).

Once we have broken happiness down into different elements, we follow groups of people over a long period of time to

see how changes in their lives impact on these elements of happiness. If I were to follow you and the rest of the passengers on this plane, some significant changes are bound to happen to each individual over the next decade. Some of you will fall in love and some will fall out of love; some will be promoted, and some will be fired. Over the next ten years, highs and lows are guaranteed. We are bound to witness both victories and losses. The question is, how do those events and changes in life circumstance impact on the different dimensions of happiness?

What is the average impact on people’s life satisfaction from doubling their income or getting married?

That is what we try to understand.

My work has allowed me to talk to people from all four corners of the earth, from Copenhagen mayors to British cab drivers and to the Minister of Happiness in the United Arab Emirates. My main takeaway from those conversations is that we are not so different or divided when it comes to happiness.

Sickness, unemployment, and loneliness undermines happiness wherever you are from. Love, close friends, and a sense of purpose in life improve happiness wherever you are from.

And no matter where you are from – we are all in pursuit of happiness.

That’s why it’s so important to keep on researching happiness to try and understand the elements that create good conditions for a happier life. 

It wasn’t so long ago that nearly everybody in Japan could work with bamboo to some degree, he points out.

“But then plastic came along, and bamboo started to disappear from our lives. Fortunately, it’s enjoying a bit of a renaissance. When I applied to the Training Centre, almost anyone could

get in, but now there’s about three applicants for every opening,” he says.

A native of Beppu who graduated from the Training Centre, Sato now runs her own shop, Cotake, not far north of the city’s central train station. Brainfood from arts and crafts How can handicrafts boost wellbeing, increase creativity, and brain activity?

I

n a lecture hall at the University of Helsinki it’s a common sight to see students knitting while they listen to a lecture by Minna Huotilainen, Phd, and professor of educational sciences who specialises in neuroscience.

If it sounds odd for students to be encouraged to take up handicrafts while they learn, it’s not. The practice is backed by solid neuroscience research, and one of the outcomes is that wellbeing and cognitive skills improve while doing handicraft.

“We can study the effects of the human brain and measure them, and there are a variety of activities that lower stress and help to activate brain activity and actually help learning,” says Huotilainen.

“Handicrafts such as knitting can lower stress and have a range of health and wellbeing benefits,” says Huotilainen. “For example, it’s been shown in current education that doing something other than just sitting and listening to a lecture, can help learning – cognitive wellbeing.

It actually helps the brain take in more information. Physical activity, such as hand movement and even walking, is beneficial to the learning process,” she adds.

The award-winning Helsinki-based neuroscientist has devoted her career to memory, attention, musical processing, learning, and studying the brain at work especially in young people, children, infants, and even foetuses, mainly with ERP (event related potential, which is the measured brain response that is the direct result of a specific sensory cognitive, or motor events) and MEG, magneto encephalography, a functional neuroimaging technique for mapping the brain.

Huotilainen is the author of many prestigious

scientific papers in her field. In her 2018 paper “Why our brains love arts and crafts: Implications of creative practices on psychological wellbeing,” co-authored by several lead researchers in the field in Form Akademisk journal, the authors set out to explain the mechanisms behind the positive effects on the brain of handicraft works.

“Why our brains love arts and crafts” goes onto explain in scientific terms the process of handicraft on brain activity: “The mirror neuron system helps in skill learning, and the plasticity of the brain ensures that skills may be learned at all stages of life. Arts and crafts play a role in controlling stress and enhancing relaxation. They also enable us to fail safely and handle our emotions,” says Huotilainen.

PAINTING WELLBEING Helsinki-based art therapist Krista Launonen worked for many years as a successful magazine editor and writer for some of the top Finnish glossies, including fashion magazine Gloria and health title Voi Hyvin (“Wellbeing”).

Several years ago, Launonen became increasingly interested in the effects of arts and handicrafts when she noticed the positive effect they had on her staff when she was the helm of Voi Hyvin magazine.

For example, one way to generate ideas and alleviate the pressure of Monday morning brainstorming sessions was to take the focus away from the pressure in the conference room. So Launonen encouraged staff to do something completely unrelated such as paint their nails while they talked about ideas. She quickly noticed that ideas flowed more freely when the focus was elsewhere.

“While you’re doing something else it frees you,” she says. “I noticed that at the so-called nail polish meetings ideas just started to flow. Some of them were the best meetings we’ve had in terms of generating ideas because people could speak freely without feeling as though the focus was on them or they were being judged. Now of course it doesn’t need to be nail painting, it can be something else.

That insight and Launonen’s passion took over and she left the magazine business five years ago and started Mielitila (loosely translated as “mind space”), which is housed in a light airy townhouse a short metro ride from downtown Helsinki filled with paints and paper, paintings, brushes, and books.

“My main focus is creativity through handicrafts. I aim to live what I teach, so it’s not just workshops or lectures, but the key focus is doing things with your hands,” says Launonen, who is also an avid painter.

“There’s a body of research that illustrates that whatever type of work you do – whether you’re an engineer or a researcher – rarely does a brilliant idea come to you when you’re in a normal setting, for example, at your laptop or in a boardroom.

“Almost always the amazing ideas come when you’re doing something totally different and tactile,” she says.

She credits the extensive research that Minna Huotilainen has carried out on the effects of working with your hands and how it activates different parts of the brain.

“Different things work for different people, and the best thing is to find out what works best for you. When you tap into your creativity, you unblock the ideas that are self-filtered,” says Launonen.

“By that I mean a kind of sensor or block is removed, the one in which the rational mind works hard – this can be a good thing – but has ideas like ‘I can’t do this, it can’t be done like this, I was told I couldn’t draw as a child, etc.’ Fear is one of the biggest blocks to creativity,” says Launonen.

For first-timers, Launonen’s goal is to clear the client’s head of any preconceived notions about what they can or cannot do.

“For example, it you’re very stressed and busy we could do a relaxation or an imagination exercise, and then start the process by writing, painting, or colouring. It’s all very free form and calming. The answer is already in you – you just need to get through the blocks, busyness, and other things that hold you back,” she says.

Launonen’s formula for getting into a flow situation is simple: Enjoy what you do and do what you enjoy. 

Fifteen are located in the departure hall; 15 are located in the upstairs arrival hall; another five are available in the downstairs arrival hall (for EU/EEA/CH citizens only).

Passengers from the EU, EEA, CH, Japan, and South Korea with biometric passports can use the automated border control gates. Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, and U.S. citizens with biometric passports may use the automated border control upon departure only. All other nationalities must use the manned border control booths in the departure and arrival halls.

Those passengers travelling with infants, baggage trolleys, or wheelchairs must use the manual control lane.
