Embarking on a new era

Finnish writer once noted that good style is something you don’t even notice – it simply just feels right.

Finnair is the first airline in Europe to fly the new Airbus A350 XWB long-haul aircraft. This month’s delivery marks a new beginning. For many years, our team has been working together with our partners on every detail of these state-ofthe-art planes and our new service concepts – so that too would feel just right.

Japan fever heats up THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN welcomed a record-breaking 13.4 million tourists last year. But what exactly are Japan’s biggest tourist draws?

Tokyo is still number one, reports Veltra, a global tour provider offering some 1,700 expeditions in Japan. The capital draws crowds with its newly minted UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Fuji, which accounts for 23 per cent of Veltra’s Tokyo bookings.

Helsinki means business This autumn Helsinki hosts two mega-meetups attracting thousands of movers and shakers from around the world: Slush and Nordic Business Forum - IMPACT. Why has the Finnish capital lately become a major hub for business conferences and startup events?

“At forums like Nordic Business Forum and Slush you don’t only meet your peers and listen to speakers from your own field of expertise,” says Alexandra PasternakJackson, managing director of Amcham Finland.

“You get a perspective on what’s happening in the economy overall and what’s happening in other industries. You get new ideas and connections, which is why many of our members attend these and our own events,” she says.

Another reason for the popularity of high-quality events is lack of time. People choose carefully the events they attend.

“Though there are more demands on our time than ever, the significance of meeting people in person hasn’t changed.

In fact, we see that it has grown. Gatherings like these are a quick and hugely efficient way to keep your finger on the pulse,” says Pasternak-Jackson.

Aviation CEOs from around the world will gather in Finland at the CAPA World Aviation Summit on October 7-8. Finavia is the host and CAPA’s official global destination partner for 2015.

Pre-buying a cup of coffee for someone who cannot afford it is the latest trend in the coffee world.

A cup of kindness ONE OF THE latest trends in the coffee world is ‘suspended coffee’, which simply means pre-buying a cup of coffee for someone who cannot afford it.

With hard economic times upon us, this age-old Neapolitan goodwill tradition has been revived, and with the help of Facebook, it has spread all over the world. The Suspended Coffee network (suspendedcoffees. com) has gathered over 1,400 supporting cafés during its first year of existence.

One of the first UK cafés to join the movement was Coffee7 in east London’s Forest Gate. Manager Gijs Van Amelsvoort checks the board to see how many suspended coffees are available today – 32

at that moment – and says that the goodwill concept definitely works.

“Forest Gate is a small neighbourhood with a strong sense of community, so most of our customers are local. I actually know by name about half of the people asking for suspended coffees and I’ve never had the feeling that the system is being abused,” says Van Amelsvoort.

The idea goes beyond just offering refreshment to someone down on their luck. A free cup of coffee can also provide comfort, conversation and a sense of belonging.

“It’s about getting people out of their houses,” Van Amelsvoort adds.

Hungry for Karelia ‘From guesthouse to guesthouse’ won the national Hungry for Finland food tourism competition last summer. IN THE CENTRE of Helsinki stands a white functionalist building. Known as the Tennis Palace, it has been home to the Helsinki Art Museum (HAM) since 1999 but for the past year its doors have been shut. The museum – which shares the building with a popular cinema multiplex – is now reopening with double its former exhibition space after vast renovations throughout.

“People come here to relax, see a film, and grab a snack – so why not visit an exhibition or the museum shop while they’re at it? We want to make it easy by providing a relaxed atmosphere, easy access and many free exhibitions,” explains HAM’s Director Maija Tanninen-Mattila.

Focusing on contemporary art, the museum reopens with a bold splash, featuring a solo exhibition by the renowned Chinese artist and social activist Ai Weiwei. In addition to three or four major exhibitions a year, the museum features smaller exhibitions and permanent collections including a Tove Jansson collection set to open next year.

And the art isn’t just confined to the gallery space. A large chandelier by Kari Cavén adorns the hallway and even

ilan, famously home to Italy’s colossal fashion houses and labels, is also an emerging haven for independent designers.

One of them is Jeong-Ah Yooj, who opened her own atelier in the Navigli area, just a couple of metro stops from the famous Duomo, in 2011. A graduate of the Marangoni fashion school, and originally from Korea, she designed for Max Mara and Krizia before going independent.

“I thought it would be great to open my own studio and create something unique for my clients.” she says.

Yooj works with a group of women in India and Bangladesh who embroider her fabrics, which are sourced from Italian artisans. The lace is imported from France.

“It’s wonderful to have all this freedom, but to succeed at the fashion game, you also need perseverance and uniqueness,” she says.

DRESS TO IMPRESS Milan-based stylist and fashion editor Flavia Liberatori has collaborated with independent designers and the big labels for ten years, and works for the Italian fashion magazine D la Repubblica.

“It’s hard for indie designers,” she says. “First they must compete with the Italian giants like Prada and Gucci.

And now noteworthy competition is coming from northern Europe, Asia and Russia. But working from the epicentre of the fashion world gives designers more opportunities,” says Liberatori.

Getting noticed amidst the competition is the key.

The indie design scene and community is smaller than in London, and the dominance of the big fashion houses in Milan has been tough on designers like Yooj.

But change is in the air.

A few streets down on the picturesque Navigli Grande canal is the colourful showroom of emerging brands incubator Meet2Biz. Silvia Bentivoglio explains how the market has changed for independent designers in Milan.

“Ten years ago people wanted big labels, now it’s completely different, the same people come here and ask for unique pieces, or they want leather items from Tuscany or Morocco,” says Bentivoglio, project manager and also a designer herself.

“It’s still very difficult for small brands to do everything though. We help them improve their production, choose the right products and prices for the market, and we also match brands so that they can buy fabrics in bulk and sometimes even co-create collections,” she says. l

Hudson, a small town 200 kilometres north of Manhattan, has overcome its history of crime to morph into a destination for food, art and vintage shopping.

uring the first half of the 20th century, Hudson’s Columbia Street boasted 15 brothels – an impressive number for a town with about 12,000 residents at the time.

New York City’s history is famously marked by its prohibitionera speakeasies and the former Mafia hangouts of Little Italy, but this small town nestled amidst the forestcovered hills of Hudson Valley proudly held its own as a centre of vice. After the whaling industry of the 1800s had dwindled, Hudson’s brothels and gambling houses brought in so much out-of-town money that local authorities turned a blind eye to the goings-on of Columbia Street – until a state police crackdown in 1950 brought the town’s red light era to an end.

Today Hudson is again known as a Hudson valley hub – but for much more family-friendly reasons.

An enticing mix of bohemia and cosy Americana, its reputation has evolved from a rough-around-theedges destination into a trendy weekend hangout. New Hudson transplants have opened boutiques, galleries, hotels and restaurants featuring locally sourced fare.

A HIP PLACE TO BE After the 1950s, Hudson’s historical quarters stood largely boarded up. An evolution gradually began in the 1980s when antiques dealers opened shops along

Warren Street, the town’s main thoroughfare marked by its remarkably preserved 18th and 19th century buildings. A wave of creative entrepreneurs and artists have followed in the past 15 years, bringing about a full-fledged creative boom into this town of 6,600 people.

“Hudson is the new Brooklyn,” says art consultant Maureen Sullivan. “As non-stop escalating rents push New York City’s artists further out in Queens and Brooklyn, north of the city is becoming more and more appealing for artists to live and work.”

The town’s visual art scene is certainly buzzing.

Warren Street alone has 19 galleries showcasing oil paintings, photography, mixed media and more. And thanks to Hudson’s accessibility on the Amtrak train line, artists no longer have to worry about a lack of exposure, explains Sullivan.

Pop-up art shows, changing contemporary collections at the Olana museum and the new Marina Abramovic Institute are some examples of Hudson’s vibrant visual art scene. October’s annual ArtsWalk will include more than 120 art exhibits and other happenings.

“Over the past ten years the number of visitors has really increased; Hudson has become not just a downtown for the area but an attraction. It’s a hip place to be,” says David Colby, president of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce.

BIKER BABES AND BUSINESSMEN It was art – and architecture – that originally brought Dini Lamot and Windle Davis to Hudson. The couple, partners for 41 years, moved to Hudson in 2000 and currently own The Inn at Hudson (317 Allen Street), an upscale bed-and-breakfast.

“We came here for an art opening, and driving up Warren Street, our jaws dropped. It was fairly boarded up at that point but there were amazing old buildings from the bottom to the top,” says Davis.

The couple quickly decided to relocate to Hudson from Los Angeles, and ran a children’s puppet theatre and Saturday disco before purchasing an early 20th century local mansion, restoring it and turning it into The Inn at Hudson.

Beyond the beautifully preserved architecture, Davis says he enjoyed Hudson’s eclectic vibe: “It was a great combination of tattooed biker babes standing next to Long Island navy-blue suited businessmen,” he says.

Among Hudson’s more recent transplants are Clive Tucker and Jill Kuhn, who moved to the area from Hawaii in 2014 to open an acupuncture and health products shop called Watson’s Cabinet (426 Warren Street).

“We visited here the previous winter and Hudson really caught our eye,” says Kuhn. The couple was struck by the town’s proximity to surrounding nature; Hudson Valley is famous for its green forests and majestic vistas provided by the nearby Catskill Mountains.

“Everybody has been welcoming. We are now on the other side of the coin because we are now the ones welcoming newcomers,” says Tucker.

A TREASURE TROVE OF ART It’s easy to see Hudson’s idyllic appeal. On sunny weekends, Warren Street is bustling without feeling congested. Couples stroll by with iced coffees in hand, shops lure in passersby with hand-painted signs and sidewalk clothing racks, and the occasional dog can be spotted people-watching from a second-story alcove window. Locally sourced restaurant Swoon (340 Warren Street) serves hearty Bloody Marys, while Café Le Perche (230 Warren) draws in patrons with the scent of fresh croissants. After sampling ice cream flavours such as Lavender and Bourbon Pecan at Lick (253 Warren), many stop by The Secret Gardener plant nursery across the street to walk amidst vibrant flowers and brainstorm ideas for their gardens.

“In Hudson you get a cool city with gourmet restaurants, but still a rural feel,” says Julia Zamboni, who works at The Secret Gardener. “Back in the day, if you were hanging out in this area you were up to no good.”

She adds that, like in many towns greeted by an influx of wealth, locals worry about Hudson’s cost of living skyrocketing. “There is still poverty here,” she says.

LOCAL BANDS AND DRAG SHOWS Some venues beyond Warren Street give a sense of Hudson’s less polished side. The Half Moon (48 S. Front Street), a local hangout just a block away from the railway station, hosts bands several times weekly.

A bar has stood here since the 1940s, and was reopened in 2013 after standing empty for a few years. It’s an optimal spot for striking up a conversation over a beer or a game of pool.

On a late summer afternoon, Lamot and Davis are setting up for a drag show at The Half Moon. The two were members of a new wave band called the Human Sexual Response in the late ’70s and early ’80s, and are still involved in entertainment. Lamot performs in drag as Musty Chiffon at venues around the country.

“It can be funny when Musty gets dressed at the inn and we have guests. We don’t want to inflict our drag-queeniness onto them, but when Dini walks down the stairs in big platform shoes, well – people often say ‘make sure we can get a picture before you leave’,” he says.

Business is booming: weekends at the inn are often booked months in advance. Amidst Hudson’s renaissance, Davis mentions the challenge of connecting the artistic and the affluent. “The crisis Hudson is going through now is keeping housing stock affordable for artists; they are the most important parts of our community,” he says.

Overall, however, he sees the rebirth as a positive development: “From talking to just about everybody in Hudson, I can tell you that so many locals are in heaven over the artists and the restaurants and everything that’s going on here.” l

FIRST HE TAKES PARIS Tuomas Merikoski Fashion designer and founder of Aalto International

P

aris Fashion Week is set to be a big moment for Tuomas Merikoski.

It’s the first time his label Aalto International has been listed on the official schedule. After 14 years first working for the French luxury brand Givenchy, and then for Louis Vuitton, he has finally realised his dream of creating something truly his own. Aalto International was launched last year, and both press and buyers have welcomed the new label with open arms – it already sells in over 40 shops around the world.

When working on his first collection, Merikoski went back to his roots to find out what it really means to be Finnish. Drawing inspiration from photography by Jouko Lehtola, his collection is a nod to the expressive youth culture of the ’90s.

“What was normal for me growing up is seen as exotic elsewhere. Young Finns are liberal, but they have always had a close bond with nature. I deliberately wanted to move away from this clean, flawless image of Finland because for me it’s just too predictable,” he explains.

REAL-TIME PRESENCE The Aalto International spring-summer 2016 collection is a sequel to this theme, with added elements drawn from Finnish midsummer traditions. Despite its timeless origins, the mood is very contemporary thanks to graphic elements and prints in bright acid colours.

Merikoski sees it as crucial that his brand in located in Paris because of its undeniable clout among the fashion crowd. He works closely with a team of specialists and financial backers, each bringing core competence to the brand. His business partner Valeria Martelli used to work as a retail expert for a large fashion house. He also collaborates closely with the photographer Johan Sandberg. “I’ve known these people for a long time. It’s important to be able to bounce your ideas off your colleagues and share responsibilities.

There’s no way I could do everything myself,” he says.

Designing four collections a year, each consisting of over 50 garments, Merikoski spends the majority of his time researching, developing and creating. He also regularly meets journalists, press officers and stylists in addition to overseeing photo shoots, website development and business strategy.

He admits that the pace keeps getting faster and faster.

“In the old days everything was done in secret before the big launch. With the arrival of social media, we now communicate in real time as the collection unfolds. It’s important to understand the impact of all the different visual elements from photography to store design,” he says.

In the future Merikoski hopes to see Aalto International become a big player in the global fashion market. Whatever lies ahead, he’s going for it – big time. aaltointernational.com

L

ast year New York was crowned the world’s reigning fashion capital by the Global Language Monitor, an Austin-based trend monitoring company. It is indeed a city of endless opportunities – and that’s precisely why stylist Claudia Cifu decided to move back to where she studied fashion when she was younger.

Over the past four years she has worked as an in-house stylist for Madewell and is currently freelancing for magazines and also working for big fashion brands such as Old Navy and Ann Taylor.

“I lived in Finland for about five years in between and had the opportunity to work on a range of projects. At some point I just started to question whether I was going to be doing it for the rest of my life. I felt like I wanted to grow in what I do, and my only option was to go abroad,” she explains.

Styling was a love-at-first-sight career choice for Cifu. After completing a degree in fashion, she started off assisting the fashion director of New York-based Trace magazine – and everything just clicked.

“When you get into styling you immediately realise that this is a crazy job. Fashion people are nuts,” she chuckles.

Competition in the fashion industry is obviously tough, but Cifu isn’t easily fazed.

“When you email someone and don’t hear back from them, you simply email again and again until you get a reply. It’s just the

way things work and you can’t let it get you down – you have to be very persistent,” she says.

STYLE BEFORE FASHION Cifu lives in Brooklyn in the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Clinton Hill, where she often gets together with colleagues and photographers to talk about the latest happenings in the industry. She’s inspired by the cultural diversity of New York and the diverse mix of people she meets.

“I need to be aware of what’s going on.

Although it’s important to know who the newest up-and-coming model is, the key is to understand my clients and their needs.

My own style is completely irrelevant when I’m dressing other people. It’s about seeing the bigger picture,” she says.

Cifu says she still gets goose bumps when she sees a great fashion show but insists that she’s actually more into style than fashion. “Fashion is more about who’s wearing this season’s trends. Style is something that is harder to pigeonhole. It’s a sum of many things – something you can look into and study.”

Cifu has ambitions to take her career to the next level by designing something of her own. Whether she stays in New York to fulfil her dream is still undecided. “I have nothing against going back to Finland but right now I’m really happy here. I’ll have to see where life takes me,” she says. claudiacifu.com

LONDON AFFAIR Sandra Hagelstam Blogger, designer and social media influencer

S

andra Hagelstam started writing her blog 5 Inch and Up five years ago. Back then, as a fashion student in London, having a visual diary seemed like a nice idea, though blogging wasn’t exactly embraced in a big way by industry insiders. Things have certainly changed since then. Today the biggest names in the blogosphere are fronting fashion magazines and big brand campaigns.

The first thing that sets Hagelstam apart from the crowd is her Finnish background, which she never thought would interest people as much as it does. “I really embrace Finland’s special look. When I’m back home I shoot a lot in nature and people find it really interesting. In some ways my style is quite quite dramatic, which is something that stands out in the Instagram world filled with pastels,” she says.

LIFE OF INFLUENCE Hagelstam’s blog is all about fashion, shoes and make-up. She acknowledges that it may seem shallow, but focusing on style trends was a conscious decision. “The blog is only a small part of my life. I want to create a vision of this breezy, effortless lifestyle that people get sucked into. It makes it easier for me to separate my personal life from the blog,” she says.

or what she likes to call ‘social media influencer’ – Hagelstam gets hundreds of thousands of visitors each month eager to see what she is up to. She has a managing company coordinating her projects and she recently hired a fulltime photographer, Mikko Puttonen.

Due to the frantic pace, holidaying hasn’t really been an option for the last two years. “I’m on my phone and email 24 hours a day. The blog is such a personal project that everybody always wants to talk to me directly,” she says.

Life gets particularly busy during the bi-annual fashion week season, when everybody wants to know what their favourite bloggers are wearing and which shows they are attending.

Hagelstam is well aware of her influence. “Many brands and designers use pictures of bloggers on their mood boards. We are part of each stage from inspiration and marketing to actually selling the product – it works in a circle,” she says.

Hagelstam clearly enjoys the recognition and opportunities her job brings. Working on bigger projects with well-known brands means that her fees have gone up too. Hagelstam says she will be ready to move on when she no longer sees a future in her job – but that’s not quite yet. “I don’t think blogging has peaked yet. Not even close.” l 5inchandup.blogspot.com

“We have spent lots of time on Airbus commonality,” says Alan Pardoe of Airbus.

ike all his Airbus colleagues Alan Pardoe, Head of Marketing Communications for Airbus, exudes genuine, almost boyish corporate pride as he leads the way into the company’s aircraft mock-up hall, close to Toulouse Airport. Full-size wingless body replicas occupy the hall, alongside demonstration models and cutaway displays – an oversized playground for any aviation freak.

We are here to see the new Airbus A350 XWB (Extra Wide Body). Finnair is the first European airline to launch this aviation design flagship, leading a pack of 40 airlines that had placed 774 orders for the A350 as of July 2015. The first of Finnair’s 19 new fleet members are being delivered this autumn.

Designing, building and testing aircraft safety and reliability to extremes involves an industrial process of unequalled scale and complexity. Some 20,000 Airbus employees work at the Toulouse factory in the south of France out of 55,000 worldwide.

comes in three sizes – A350800, A350-900 and A3501000 – to match fleet capacity demands. It has a maximum flight range of 15,200km.

As a launch customer, Finnair ordered eleven A350900s in 2007, later taking up its option for a further eight aircraft.

More and more people will want to fly and have the means to do so, says Pardoe, tapping the innovative, lightweight composite shell of the A350 body. All in all, air transport is forecast to double in the next 15 years.

The Airbus A350s are a sustainable response to this demand as well as to the needs of customer comfort.

“We have enough orders to fill the factory for nine years. That’s a wonderful thing to have for any industry,” he says.

COCKPIT COMMONALITY Total Airbus sales since the company was founded in 1970 have exceeded 15,600. That means a vast fleet of Airbus aircraft of various generations are landing and taking off from the world’s airports every minute of every day. In the same way that car drivers will feel at home with new models of brands they know and trust, aircraft pilots appreciate a degree of familiarity, not least in cockpit commonality.

tion, says Pardoe. “With a small amount of training, pilots can find their way around different Airbus flight decks. We have spent a lot of time working on this commonality.”

The generic standard for the Economy area is configured in a 3+3+3 seat-per-row layout. Pardoe shows how the floor is flat along the full length of the cabin without any metal strips used to fix carpeting, which means fewer snags for roll-along baggage. He gestures at the wide windows, offering generous ambient light when needed.

TESTING TO EXTREMES Design processes are also made more efficient by the company’s digital environment. This enables designers and technicians in different locations to compare notes and observations quickly.

Testing processes are unrelentingly thorough, pushing the aircraft to extremes that it would almost certainly never encounter during actual commercial operations. “It might be flown close to the speed of sound during one test,” says Pardoe.

Investing in lightweight, strong and aerodynamic composites is crucial for the A350.

“Fifty-three per cent of the fuselage and wings are made from composites, with titanium, aluminium and steel accounting for most of the rest,” says Pardoe.

“The A350 designers, aware of the risk of bird-strike damage, chose to make the nose section from aluminium. Using the right material for the right purpose in the right place – that’s what building aeroplanes is all about.”

COUNTDOWN TO DELIVERY Pardoe leads the way to the final assembly line (FAL), which boasts facilities as state of the art as the planes it is designed to produce.

“Tail sections are from the Airbus plant in Spain, the wings are made in Wales, the fuselage in Germany, and all these major elements are brought to Toulouse on special Beluga transport aircraft,” says Matthew Lord, contracted through tour operator Manatour to guide visitors around the FAL. “A whole Airbus A350 wing can be transported in a Beluga.”

The countdown to delivery proceeds through a series of assembly stations. Final assembly is preceded at Station 59 by the installation in the fuselage of major elements, or ‘monuments’ as they are known, such as galleys, crew rest compartments and WCs. Station 50 is where the final assembly begins in earnest, bringing together the three fuselage sections and adding the landing gear in the nose section. “This

TRANSPARENT COOPERATION The aircraft moves on from Station 40 to Station 30 for fitting of furnishings and other equipment. “This is the part of the process where we check all the functionalities, including ground testing,” says Julien Wasier, Head of Station 30. A maximum of four aircraft can be handled in the station at any one time.

“Finnair has a special focus on Business Class so their Zodiac Cirrus III fully lie-flat seats need inspections before they arrive in Toulouse,” says Jacques Peron, Head of Cabin Installation at Airbus. “Transparency is something that Finnair are very keen on, so either side can say clearly if they have an issue. We’ve had good feedback and the guys from Finnair were happy,” says Peron. “Finnair was a dedicated customer from the beginning of the A350 programme, but of course we’re working on A350s for other airlines. Ground testing is in good shape.”

After external tests on cabin pressure, communications and fuel calibration are carried out, the aircraft is hand-painted using environmentally regulated polyurethane spray paints.

Finally it arrives at Station 20 for the last fittings of cabin elements, such as in-flight entertainment and special seating as well as cockpit gear. After two and a half months of final assembly, it’s now ready for its inaugural flight and delivery. Serving long-haul flights to Asia and North America, this new aircraft represents the latest chapter in a cooperation story that dates back many decades.

A whole catalogue of innovations justify the excitement in the build-up to the A350 XWB inaugural international flight, with ‘sampler’ flights to northern Finland and Europe offered in October.

New features include a 25 per cent increase in fuel efficiency, which exceeds Finnair’s sustainable development targets. Others include external and internal noise levels reduced to well below regulated levels, an advanced air filtration system changing cabin air every two to three minutes, and lower cabin pressure combined with improved draft management and finely adjustable temperature control.

For the first time on Finnair aircraft, WiFi is a feature throughout the cabins.

One of the most striking new features is the LED cabin lighting system customised for Finnair by Finnish designer Vertti Kivi. His Space Alive concept provides subtle shifts reflecting the time of the day or even the season. A warm orange glow can be created to suggest an Asian ambience while a cool Nordic blue sets the mood as the planes approach Helsinki.

“From the pilot’s point of view, the major improvements are all the updated aircraft systems,” says Marko Valtonen, Finnair’s Chief Pilot for Airbus aircraft.

“Many of the aircraft systems are now interacting together, thus making the pilot’s work more logical and efficient.

The manual feel of the aircraft is excellent. The aircraft is big, but handling is very precise and accurate.”

FLIGHT MODE Aviation superfans profess a consummate passion for planes, flying and pretty much anything above the clouds.

any people catch the flying bug, and while some love flying for flying’s sake, others simply adore aircraft for their aesthetics alone. There are clubs, magazines and hundreds of blogs around the world dedicated to even the most obscure aviation arcana.

And these enthusiasts are not just Sunday hobbyists: the community is highly respected by aviation industry professionals and airline companies for the detailed customer feedback they provide.

Superfans fall in love with planes for many reasons.

For Mika Virolainen, it was an aural awakening. He couldn’t get their sounds out of his head – quite literally. Virolainen grew up nearby the din of Helsinki Airport, and as a child he saw take-offs and landings every day. After becoming obsessed with overhead airline traffic, Virolainen organised a club with his friends – together they would ride their bikes to the airport to gaze up at planes as they soared into the sky.

Now Virolainen helps run the website Finnish Aviation Photography (fap.fi), staffed by a group of dedicated enthusiasts who photograph a wide range of

aircraft and then post the images online for others to enjoy. They have even compiled a ten-page online cheat sheet for the best spotting points around Helsinki to photograph planes.

For others, the attraction of the friendly skies is rather more abstract. Yvette Scott, a university lecturer in aviation management and the founder of website Simply Luxury Travel (simplyluxurytravel.com), has always been fascinated by the romance of flying. “I am a window seat person and will spend most of the flight looking at the world below or the cloud formations,” she says, poetically referring to her vistas of aircraft gracefully climbing upwards as “ballet in the sky.”

IN PLANE VIEW One of the most popular aviation sites, airlines.net, is a worldwide resource for industry enthusiasts and professionals, boasting an impressive 184,000 registered users and 670,000 social media followers. Website forums are regularly filled with posted images of new planes ­– and, occasionally, of members’ reservations for an aircraft’s inaugural flight or new route.

McCarthy credits his family for his obsession. “My father was in the Air Force during the Second World War,” McCarthy recalls, “and our house was filled with aviation memorabilia when I was growing up.”

McCarthy would spend entire days in wonder with his dad at their local airport. In those days, as a curious 15-year-old, he would simply walk up to the immigration counter with his camera and tell the officials that he wanted to be let through to look at the planes. No one ever said no to young McCarthy, and he spent countless weekends exploring aircraft parked at the terminal, snapping away.

McCarthy’s website features aviation news, aircraft data and history, as well as over two million online images of aircraft in action. Now, in addition to making his living running the site, McCarthy specialises in aerial photography, regularly chartering helicopters to capture photos of planes as they are taking off and landing in Sydney.

McCarthy rarely gets a holiday from his busy day job managing the website. But when he does, there’s always only one thing on his bucket list: more planes.

“In a few weeks I’m going to give myself a break,” McCarthy says, “and fly to Perth for the day. Their mining and cargo charters mean that the airport has some amazing aircraft. I’m going to take some shots of them and then fly back home that night.” l 66 BLUE WINGS OCTOBER 2015

WING AND A FLAIR Finnair’s October launch of the Airbus A350 XWB, the world’s newest wide-body, has been making big waves in aviation communities, with extensive forum discussions around fuselage interior configurations and onboard passenger experience. Mika Virolainen is particularly excited about the A350’s launch. “Every Finnish enthusiast is proud and happy to have this plane in Finland,” Virolainen says. “As it is a brand new aircraft type, there aren’t too many out in the world yet. And, wide-body aircraft are always more fascinating because of their size and power.”

ezelligheid is a Dutch word that doesn’t translate readily. Roughly, it means cosiness. However, as the Dutch will tell you, it means much, much more than that.

If you wish to understand the true meaning of gezelligheid ­­– and get a healthy slathering of culture while you’re at it, and perhaps even a glimpse of Holland’s ­glamorous new First Couple, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima – then head for Den Haag.

If ever there was a Dutch city that qualifies as overlooked, it is The Hague. This is surprising, given that this seaside metropolis of half a million is both the seat of the Dutch government and the home of the royal family, as well as a clutch of some of Northern Europe’s finest museums.

Even though Amsterdam is only a 50-minute train ride away, relatively few non-business or non-governmental travellers seem to make it to this sophisticated city. Test: Do you know anyone who has been to Den Haag?

HOME OF THE GOLDFINCH Lately The Hague has begun to shed its relative obscurity by reason of an interesting coincidence of developments, the most recent being the reopening, in

June 2014, of the city’s most renowned museum, the ­celebrated Mauritshuis. Located adjacent to the Hofvijver, the shimmering rectangle of water adjoining the Binnenhof – the venerable government compound, which is the site of the Ridderzaal, home to the Dutch parliament – this majestic 17th ­century edifice is dedicated to preserving the art and atmosphere of its original tenant, Prince Johan ­Maurits van Nassau. Hence the name.

Once described as “the smallest of the great ­museums and the greatest of the small museums,” this revived architectural masterpiece is now larger and more welcoming than ever, as a result of the ­sinuous new Dutch Shell wing, which is connected to the main structure by a luminous foyer and an inviting brasserie.

The Mauritshuis’ star attraction remains the 840piece Royal Cabinet of Paintings, which includes works by some of the most celebrated painters of Holland’s Golden Age, including Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals and Jan Steen. The exquisite, remounted trove also includes two canvases which have recently become ‘crossover stars’ thanks to the fiction they have inspired. Vermeer’s lustrous 1672 Girl with a Pearl Earring is the inspiration of the noted 1996 novel of the same name by Tracy Chevalier, and the 2003 film screen adaptation starring Scarlett

Johansson and Colin Firth. More recently, The Goldfinch, the miniature 1654 (33.5 cm x 22.8 cm) painting of a goldfinch by Carel Fabritius, features in the bestselling 2013 novel of that name by Donna Tartt.

SLUM IT WITH THE ROYALS Another development which has brought attention to The Royal Hague, as this city is also known, was the abdication two years ago of Holland’s long-reigning monarch, Beatrix, in favour of her son, Willem-­ Alexander, and his Argentinian-born wife, Máxima.

The dashing and popular new king and his fashionable and no less (if not more) popular wife, Queen Máxima, reside at Villa Eikenhorst on the De ­Horsten estate in the leafy Haagse suburb of Wassenaar. Like his mother, Willem-Alexander uses the Paleis Noordeinde in the heart of the city as his working palace. The outgoing and stylish couple and their three young daughters, who can frequently be seen strolling about town – apart from on Prinsjesdag, the ­September day when they travel to the Binnenhof in the traditional golden carriage to open Parliament – have brought new attention to the Dutch royals, as well as to their hometown.

LIVE LIKE A PRINCE The five-star Des Indes, a palatial hotel on lovely, leafy Lange Voorhout, which serves as The Hague’s embassy row, has housed such diverse celebrities as Winston Churchill and Prince over the years. Originally intended as a pied-à-terre for the 19th century Dutch grandee Baron von Brienen, the building was constructed so that the baron’s friends could arrive by horse and proceed to the stables, now the site of the hotel’s immense lobby and posh bar.

Another solid, less expensive, but no less refined choice is the Park Hotel. Located on cosy Molenstraat, a shop-lined walking street in the centre, this ultra-gezellig hostelry boasts perhaps the friendliest staff of any hotel in Holland. To be sure, the legacy of Holland’s searing fiveyear-long occupation by the Germans is ever present in The Hague. To see a striking reminder, take tram no. 7 from the city proper to the seaside annex of ­Scheveningen and observe the dozens of rusting German pillboxes overlooking the beach, originally erected to guard against the anticipated Allied invasion force before the actual landing in Normandy.

With its ever-circling seagulls and pillbox-dotted dunes, Scheveningen is a good place to dwell on the vicissitudes of time and fate. The historic resort is also a good place to grab a bag of mouth-watering patat (French fries) from one of the cafés lining the esplanade before heading back to town.

Another one of The Hague’s fine, smaller, overlooked museums, the Mesdag features a 14-metrehigh circular panoramic painting with a circumference of 120 metres created by H.W. Mesdag, a member of the late 19th-century ‘Haagse’ school of painters. Panorama Mesdag gives an idea of what Scheveningen used to look like a hundred years ago when it was a fishing village, and Holland was enjoying one of its long spells of neutrality and unbroken gezelligheid. The observation gallery in the centre of the room, with its cylindrical perspective and mounds of real sand, conveys the illusion that you are actually standing on a high sand dune overlooking Scheveningen a century ago.

Cosy, elegant, culturally well-endowed, The Hague is finally getting the attention it deserves. Go now before it becomes too well known, and enjoy some real gezelligheid – with a royal twist. l

Another top spot for a highbrow cup of tea is the regal La Mano Maestro: the Ceylon orange pekoe comes highly recommended. And then there’s the bohemian Café Oude Mol on Oude Molstraat, the short walking street which intersects with the royal straat.

MONDRIAN MEETS MESDAG Getting back to culture, the Mauritshuis’ numerous fine sister museums include the Gemeentemuseum, the city’s sprawling museum of modern art.

This classic early 20th-century structure designed by H.P. ­Berlage is divided into four galleries displaying collections of modern art, porcelain and applied art, fashion and musical instruments.

The gallery’s pride and joy is a collection of 300 works by Dutch modern master Piet Mondrian, including his last painting, the rousing Victory Boogie Woogie from 1944, which the great Suprematist painted just as the Allies were liberating then Nazioccupied Holland.

PASSENGERS at Helsinki Airport can use the 30 automated border control gates. Fifteen of these are located in the departure hall. The Finnish Border Guard’s automated border control helps serve growing passenger volumes at Helsinki Airport.

EU, EEA, Japanese and Swiss nationals with biometric passports can take advantage of the automated border control gates.

Other foreign nationals, who are exempt from the visa ­requirement and hold a biometric passport, may also use the automated border control upon departure.

This service is available for ­Australian, Canadian, Japanese, New Zealand, South Korean and U.S. citizens. The automated border control is monitored by a border guard ensuring secure border crossings.

Please note that passengers travelling with an infant, baggage trolley or wheelchair must use the manual border control lane.
