In the early twentieth century, Sydney had a boom in classical music. Star violinists of this period, Cyril Monk, Patrick Moore-MacMahon and Phyllis McDonald, while celebrated in their time, are all but forgotten today. A new exhibition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, (Listening Back, finishes October 7), invites viewers to reimagine Sydney’s musical past through objects, photographs, antiquated technologies, handwritten notes and personal recollections. Violinist and PhD student Julia Russoniello’s article tells the story of how she discovered lost musical artefacts to construct the histories of these early twentieth century Australian violinists.

According to jazz presenter and writer, Barry O’Sullivan, “the future of jazz will soon be heard at eighteen ear-opening concerts at the Sydney Womens’ Jazz Festival in October and November”. Amongst other stellar performers, the headline act will be three-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Cecile McLoren Salvant. With accolades from Jessye Norman, “a unique voice, supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality, which lights up every note she sings”, and The New York Times, “the finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade”, Salvant’s concert in The City Recital Hall on Tuesday, October 31st would appear not to be missed!

Music from Carl Orff’s cantata C armina Burana, notably O Fortuna, has enjoyed popularity and longevity, in large part due to its remarkable crossover ability. Excerpts have been widely used in television commercials and films ranging from Excalibur to The Hunt for Red October, and even notoriously elevated to the status of a signature piece in Nazi circles, where it was treated as an emblem of Third Reich ‘youth culture’. Tom Forrester-Paton traces the origins of this iconic work.

Celebrating 50 years at the Sydney Opera House

Michael Field reflects on the joy brought by this iconic landmark

The Sydney Opera House has been important to me for the greater part of my life, not only because of its rich offerings in music and the performing arts for the past 50 years, but also for personal reasons.

You can imagine the impact I made on a new girlfriend by taking her on an early date to the opening gala performance in the Concert Hall given by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under Charles Mackerras, back in 1973 when we were both medical students. That was a night to remember for both of us: not only were we placed prominently in the organ gallery behind the orchestra, on view to everyone, but we were also both developing an interest in Wagner at the time, and to have Birgit Nilsson as the visiting star singing excerpts from Tannhäuser and Götterdämmerung was quite overwhelming. That was the precursor of a life together till the present day (reader, I married her), greatly enhanced by a shared love of classical music, very frequently experienced at the Opera House.

While there have been many structural modifications over the years, most notably the recent improvements to the Concert Hall acoustics, the essential joy of experiencing the venue has remained unchanged. There is the pleasure of arriving to a magnificent harbourside location and approaching the iconic building with its roof formed by the equally iconic sails, then eagerly making your way to seats – in the Concert Hall, the Opera Theatre (later named after Joan Sutherland), or one of the smaller drama venues –to be part of a much anticipated performance.

And what a magnificent catalogue of performances they have been. It’s hard to pick out a few from the many, but some do come to mind as particularly memorable. There was the performance of Tristan und Isolde in the early days (the early 90s, I think),

staged in the Concert Hall in and around a shallow lake of water installed on the stage; the visit by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique symphony under Leonard Bernstein, at the peak of his charismatic powers; and the performances of the Mahler symphonies, particularly the second, Resurrection, under Vladimir Ashkenazy during his tenure as Chief Conductor. In the Opera Theatre, we had many enjoyable nights immersed in stunning efforts of staging and delivery of the great operas of Mozart, Puccini, Richard Strauss, and many others. And that’s not to diminish the impact of fine performances by Bell Shakespeare and plays by the Sydney Theatre Company in the drama theatres.

So, hats off to the Sydney Opera House, for all the pleasure and immersion in the performing arts it has given me for over two-thirds of my life, and for playing a role in a long and happy marriage.

Keeping up with our Kruger: Xiaokang Zhang

Lyndon Pike interviews our current Kruger scholarship winner

The 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Stefan Kruger Scholarship supports young, outstanding individuals further their career in the field of classical music. This annual scholarship is made possible through the generous bequest of passionate music lover, Dr Stefan Kruger.

What are your career goals and how do you see the Kruger Scholarship helping you achieve them?

The scholarship opportunity has provided a fantastic framework for me to explore writing music at a much larger scale, and strengthen my commitment to the craft in refining compositional details and pursuing new forms of expression. I hope that my endeavours here will provide a solid foundation with which I can approach the writing of new works in the future.

What are some of the challenges you have faced in your musical journey and how have you overcome them?

I am grateful for my time at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, but as a performer, there were periods of time there which were difficult for me to endure. On the personal side of things. I think in the end, coming through necessitated developing a coherent philosophy on how music fitted into the wider spectrum of my life; how it is more than just work and one of those human endeavours that comes close to reaching the sublime. It wasn’t what music could do for me anymore, it was what I could do for music!

What advice would you give to other students who are interested in pursuing a career in music? I think that to pursue music in any form as work would not be as tenable as viewing it as a mode of living, a way to think and experience the world from moment to moment, and which offers a means to escape beyond the everyday.

Be curious, and constantly seek to discover new ideas; read and listen widely, especially in areas outside of music, in science, philosophy, and literature to name but a few. All are laden with ideas of how to think and how to live, which in turn inform perspectives in musical expression. In a phrase coined by Ryan Holiday, paraphrased from the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, ‘The obstacle is the way’. If something seems difficult, it is probably the path worth pursuing; relish the journey in pursuing such goals, which in many ways is more meaningful than the destination reached.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of music?

I like reading!

What is your favourite piece of music and why?

I love music in general, so it is extremely hard to pick a favourite. If I must though, I will single out Mahler’s Symphony no 2 (Resurrection). The coda in the finale features a moment of sheer ecstasy, and is to me quite simply sublime.

What is your favourite quote about music and why?

I don’t think this quote needs much in the way of elaboration, from Aldous Huxley: “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music”.

Passion, perseverance, precision: Celebrating Pablo Casals

My father was a keen photographer, and our family used to enjoy slide nights where we would relive earlier times. Years later, he scanned a selection of these slides and put them on a disc for me. Mostly they were of the family, either at home or on holidays. But there was one which was a real anomaly: a photograph of Pablo Casals, not taken in the flesh but during a television program. What was that doing among the family snaps?

Pablo Casals was born in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia in December 1876. He was taught music by his father, becoming accomplished on piano, organ and violin, before discovering the cello and attending the Barcelona Municipal Music School and conservatories in Madrid and Brussels. He made his debut performance in Barcelona in February 1891; equally crucial for his career, he had come across the scores of Bach’s six unaccompanied cello suites and set about studying them and working on them. While they were not unknown, no previous cellist had regarded them as anything more than exercises; Casals, however, began playing them in public, often programming one of them alongside a concerto, and wrote of them: “They had been considered academic works, mechanical, without warmth. How could anyone think of them as being cold, when a whole radiance of space and poetry pours forth from them!”

His international career began with performances of Lalo’s Cello concerto in Paris and London in 1899, before touring the United States in 1901. In 1905 he formed a trio with violinist Jacques

Thibaud and pianist Alfred Cortot, who performed together for three decades, until Casals’ busy schedule made it impossible. They made six recordings in the late 1920s, the first of which was Schubert’s Trio in B flat: it has been suggested that, playing ‘with all their finesse, effervescence and warmth’, no recording career had ever got off to a better start. Former SSO concertmaster Donald Hazelwood heard this recording on the radio a couple of decades later and commented on the ‘exquisite playing on the part of all three’. Casals also performed in trios with Jelly d’Aranyi and the Australian Frederick Septimus Kelly, and with Fritz Kreisler and Ignaz Paderewski. He founded and conducted the Orquestra Pau Casals, which notably performed Beethoven’s Symphony no 9 in Barcelona in 1931 to mark the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic.

The republic was not to last, with civil war instigated by rebel forces under Francisco Franco, ensuing in 1936. Casals went into exile in Prades in southern France. He gave many concerts in France during World War II to assist the Red Cross and fellow exiles, but chose not to perform in any country that continued to recognise Franco’s regime. He was persuaded by Alexander Schneider, who had visited Prades to work with Casals on Bach’s music for unaccompanied violin, to organise a festival of eminent musicians to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the death of Bach. The first festival took place in June 1950 and brought about a new lease of life for Casals as conductor, chamber musician, teacher, and musical guru.

Paul Cooke remembers a Spanish cellist and musical guru
08

And here is the reason for the Casals photo among the family snaps… My uncle, Nelson Cooke, resigned from his position with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1949 to advance his musical training at London’s Royal College of Music with Ivor James, who in turn suggested he seek out Casals. So it was that Nelson spent much of 1951 and 1952 in Prades. He found that Casals was a very strict teacher: it was ‘hard work and no fun. Studying with the world’s best was serious business indeed’ but was nevertheless ‘an experience never to forget’ – and he was invited back in 1953, to perform in the festival orchestra.

Inspired by his mentor, Nelson went on to have a rewarding career as performer and teacher in England, the United States and Australia. Casals himself didn’t rest on his laurels. He moved to Puerto Rico, his mother’s homeland, in 1956, founding a festival there; played at the United Nations in New York in 1958, for President Kennedy at the White House in 1961, and conducted some of his own compositions, including the oratorio Il pessebre (The manger). He died 50 years ago, on 22 October 1973.

The heart of a melody: remembering Pablo Casals will be broadcast as a Sunday Special at 3:00pm on Sunday 22 October.

Good Goliards!

In Yorkshire, the county in England where I grew up, there is a place called Mount Grace Priory. It is a partly ruined, but much-preserved Carthusian monastery with a physic garden, a fish farm, and cells for 17 monks living as hermits, engaged in devotional writing and pious contemplation. Except that they weren’t – at least not all the time. As the guides will gleefully tell you if ever so slightly pressed, there’s evidence that as night fell on the hilly woodland at the foot of which the Priory sits, a small army of good-time girls would descend upon the priory, bent on sampling its alcoholic brews and, in return, bestowing on the monks some very worldly entertainment.

I mention this because whenever, as a chorister, I open a Carmina Burana score, the monks of Mount Grace Priory come to mind.

Carmina Burana: Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis (Songs of Beuern: Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments and magical images) is the Latin title of the collection of verse we know as Carmina Burana, and from which Carl Orff constructed his cantata. They are the work of a clique of clerics and students who, centuries before Martin Luther’s time, became disaffected with the hypocrisy and corruption they saw in the church of Rome. They were called Goliards, and wrote in a variety of languages –chiefly late Latin, but also Middle High German, Occitan, and sometimes a mixture of all.

Nobody knows quite where the name Goliard comes from, but some suggest it is cognate with ‘gaillard’, meaning ‘a fun-loving, convivial fellow’. Certainly, the tenor and subject matter of the 24 verses that Carl Orff chose in 1934 to set to music are consistent with that etymology.

Carl Orff was born in 1895 into a Bavarian family with strong military connections, but even stronger musical ones. Conscripted into the German army in the Great War, he was badly injured when a trench collapsed on him, and the whole experience put him off music for the duration. His daughter later opined that the episode may have been sown in him the seeds of religious scepticism, and it’s easy to imagine that dissident streak informing his response to the Carmina. These are bawdy, relentlessly impudent verses, which take the ideals of monastic, and for that matter, Christian life, and invert them in a way that seems, and probably was, intended to scandalise.

A dominant theme in his cantata is the primacy in human affairs of the wheel of fortune, itself a riposte to the notion of Divine Will. The work begins and ends with the movement which has most prominently established itself in popular culture, the famous O Fortuna, a profane prayer to the Goddess of Fortune who sits atop the Rota Fortunae. In a series of added scenes, the wheel rotates as the cantata sings the praises of immoderate drinking and carnal love, invokes the beauties of Nature, and indeed covers about every aspect of the human condition – except man’s duty to God. Within each scene, the operation of Fortune is depicted, as joy turns to despair, hope to grief, and so on.

Musically, the cantata owes much to Renaissance and early Baroque styles, although the hand of Stravinsky is also evident. This melodic straightforwardness has surely contributed to the perennial success of Carmina Burana at the box office.

Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival

The future of jazz will soon be heard at eighteen ear-opening concerts from 25 October through to 5 November in Sydney.

The headline act of the festival is the three-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Cecile McLoren Salvant performing in The City Recital Hall on Tuesday, 31 October, accompanied by her stellar quartet led by the virtuosic pianist Sullivan Fortner.

Cecile’s spellbinding presence is a tour de force that redefines jazz for a new era, taking the art form to new heights. The 33-year-old composer, singer and visual artist’s mother is French, and Salvant performs regularly in English and French as well as Spanish, Haitian Creole and Occitan, a medieval language spoken in the south of France.

The late opera singer, Jessye Norman, described Salvant as “a unique voice, supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality, which lights up every note she sings”.

The Irish Times described her vocals as those of “a real jazz singer in the classic mode who can take a song and make it feel like it’s the first time you’ve heard it.”

Kadish Morris wrote in The Guardian, “Her music is beloved for rejecting traditional jazz standards, embracing theatre and subverting classics with playful renditions”, and The New York Times has called her ‘the finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade.’

Salvant has developed a passion for storytelling and finding the connections between vaudeville, blues, theatre, jazz, baroque, and folkloric music. She is an eclectic curator, unearthing rarely recorded, forgotten songs with strong narratives and interesting power dynamics, but also with unexpected twists and humour. Salvant was the winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk jazz competition in 2010.

Grammy Award-winning pianist Sullivan Fortner, a regular pianist in trumpeter Roy Hargrove’s band from 2010 to 2017, has released two albums of his own. Fortner also plays on last year’s festival headliner, saxophonist Melissa Aldana’s nuanced and superbly executed 12 Stars album on Blue Note. Fortner is the recipient of the American Pianist Association Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz.

Over the last twelve years, The Sydney Improvised Music Association has championed groundbreaking innovation and diversity, featuring the leading women in jazz music under the Artistic Directorship of Zoe Hauptmann. Hauptmann says, “This Festival is a testament to the power of women in shaping the world of music. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to present the future of Australian jazz to Sydney. It’s never background music with SIMA!”

The festival will see Sydney’s music hotspots collaborating to present Hauptmann’s vision and bring it to life. Volunteer-run live music venues, Monday Night Confessions in Camperdown and Johnston St Jazz in Annandale will feature Australia’s finest improvisers.

Flora Carbo, a Melbourne-based saxophonist who is quickly becoming one of the most exciting young artists on the Australian jazz scene, and the awardwinning Sydney-based pianist Wilbur Whitta, will create an intimate setting in The Women’s Club at 179 Elizabeth St, Sydney, on October 25, while Johnston Street Jazz features the hip new sound of Sydney with the Motion Quartet and Sabine and Harley Duo on October 26.

On Friday 27 October, St Stephens Uniting Church on Macquarie Street plays home to the soulful vocal sounds of Tina Harrod and 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Ken Weatherley Scholarship winner Kate Wadey, accompanied by some of Sydney’s finest jazz instrumentalists.

There is an international theme across two further shows at St Stephen’s Uniting Church on Saturday October 28, with ensembles from Germany, Italy (USA) and Australia including The Shannon Barnett Quartet and Tessie Overmyer Trio, followed by Caroline Davis and Nuovo Mondo Symphonies.

The experimental and electrifying Melburnian siblings Flora and Theo Carbo, with newcomers Maddison Carter and Isaac Gunnoo, perform at Church Street Studios in Camperdown at Monday Night Confessions on Monday 30 October.

On the same bill, adventurous audiences will get to explore the space between jazz, post-rock, folk, and country with the ensemble Panghalina, that brings together three compelling Australian soloists, Freedman Award winner Helen Svoboda, Bonnie Stewart, and Maria Moles, to explore themes of sonic duality.

On Thursday, 2 November, trumpeter Heather Prowse and her trio will present an evening dedicated to the sounds of New Orleans in the mid-twentieth century, drawing on inspiration from Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, and Duke Ellington when they perform at Lazybones Lounge in Marrickville.

Some of the other musicians performing at the festival will include pianist Leonie Cohen, vocalists Nicky Crayson and Trish Delaney-Brown, saxophonist Sandy Evans, pianist/composer and bandleader Freyja Garbett, bassist Hannah James, drummer and percussionist Chloe Kim, trumpeter and bandleader Ellen Kirkwood, clarinettist Phillippa-Murphy Haste, saxophonist Loretta Palmeiro, trumpeter Sarah Purdon, bassist Sabine Tapia, and cellist Mary Rapp.

The festival has everything, from the finest soul and jazz singers to cutting-edge instrumental jazz and anthemic alt-pop album launches, showcasing the most talented, inspiring, and creative musicians from home and abroad.

All Rise

Award-winning American trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis, whose work includes ballet scores, soundtracks, concerti, string quartets, the ongoing Standard Time series, and a seven-CD box of live recordings, still has the time to be the Artistic Director of Jazz at the Lincoln Center, producing countless performance, education and broadcast events each season in its home in New York City and around the world for people of all ages.

His composition Blood on the Fields, commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center, was the first jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Marsalis is the only musician to have won a Grammy Award in both jazz and classical categories in the same year. He also spends over a third of the year on tour, performing a vast repertoire in collaboration with some of the world’s leading symphony orchestras.

So, a huge amount of excitement and anticipation met the mounting of his symphonic, collaborative, 1999 composition All Rise when performed in Sydney at the Opera House Concert Hall. Involving a hundred-strong Sydney Philharmonia Choir, fifteen members of the Jazz at the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, plus the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the work presents as a mammoth undertaking. The composition is divided into three sections of four movements, based on twelve-bar blues structures, and of a scale equal to that of Blood on the Fields. The content traverses jazz, popular and orchestral music,

with inspiration from ragtime, blues, spirituals, Latin grooves, and folk in three sections of four movements. There are influences of Stravinsky and Ellington, Cuba, and Copeland. There is the sound of trains and wide-open spaces. There are stumbles and falls, but for the most part, it all works in harmony.

The first four movements are joyous, while the second four are concerned with pain, sacrifice, and redemption. They are both sombre and poignant. The last four are about joy and maturity with all the jazz band playing 2/4 marches and obstinate bass grooves, the orchestra adapting to a percussive roughness and metronomic dictates of a rhythm section, while the choir does a lot of waiting to sing. Mostly, the music’s origins are from New Orleans, a city where the blues are an attitude to life. Throughout the performance, the composer/ trumpeter was an anonymous figure amongst the jazz band’s trumpet section, performing brief but mind-blowing solos while he absorbed and listened to every movement and musical note. The standing ovation after the spectacle was for a collaborative and spirited performance. But deep down, I think we were all applauding the career of a modern-day musical genius and the delivery of yet another of his phenomenal masterpieces.

Violinists of Sydney’s Distant Past and What They Can Teach Us

Julia Russoniello uncovers the forgotten stories of three Sydney violinists and their unfamiliar playing style in rediscovered recordings.

In the early decades of the twentieth century, Sydney saw a boom in classical music. In 1919 the Sunday Times boasted:

“Night after night, whatever the climate conditions the concert halls of Sydney are well filled... so long as music lovers have the opportunity of hearing such pianists as Hutchens, Godfrey- Smith, Penn and Benjamin, singers with such fine natural voices as Cappelli, Smythe, Appleby and Goossens, and violinists such as Stahl and Verbrugghen, Monk and Carter, so long will the musical plane of Sydney remain on a high level.”

Although the Sydney of yesteryear had a thriving concert scene, the artists who built this musical landscape have largely been forgotten, as has their highly expressive and risk-taking playing style. My research has sought to find out how three prominent violinists of this Sydney scene – Cyril Monk, Patrick Moore-MacMahon and Phyllis McDonald – actually sounded.

This has been challenging, as there is so little left to remember these musicians by. The lack of sound recordings from this era in Australia combined with the great social and cultural changes brought about by World War II, rendered the most revered violinists of early twentieth-century Sydney, pale and distant figures. My recent discovery of handwritten performance annotations as well as reel-to-reel tapes and 78RPM discs casts a new light over these forgotten figures. Through these historical artifacts, we can hear how before widespread recorded sound, Australian violinists had a courageous, nuanced, and exciting approach to interpreting the written score.

The discovery of Australian violinist Cyril Monk’s handwritten performance annotations was the first in a series of remarkable finds. In the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Library’s general collection were historical musical scores dated and signed

‘Cyril Monk 1925’. The worn editions, replete with fingerings, bowings, and expressive markings –likely unborrowed for many decades – tell a story of performance style. The blue-pencilled fingerings reveal the intended movements of Monk’s left hand, his use of harmonics, portamenti and pitch scoops. Monk’s many published arrangements held at the National Library of Australia and State Library of NSW show his expressive ideas through editorial markings: the places he recommended the violinist slow down, speed up, linger, slide and slur.

Cyril Monk (1882-1970) an unfamiliar name today, was described in a 1920 edition of Sydney’s Sun newspaper as ‘one of the best-known violinists in the Commonwealth.’ Further newspaper articles, reviews, concert programs and photographs reveal that he was a prolific recitalist, chamber musician, orchestral leader, and lecturer. Monk’s Austral String Quartet was the first string quartet in Sydney with a regular series and was for many years applauded for its pioneering work in the presentation of modern and Australian music. Monk was the leader of an earlier version of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra which operated from 1908 and he went on to lead the NSW State Orchestra under Henri Verbrugghen.

Another violinist, well known to the public as the ‘Flying Fiddler’ was Patrick Moore MacMahon (1898-1973). Born in Hurstville, MacMahon was among the very first intake of students at the NSW Conservatorium of Music (now the Sydney Conservatorium of Music) in 1916. In 1919

MacMahon went on to study violin with Joseph Szigeti in Geneva, returning to Sydney in 1922. MacMahon was a prolific recitalist, famously undertaking Australia’s first ‘Aerial Concert Tour’, piloting his own airplane the ‘Wings of Song’. MacMahon regularly appeared in recitals and ABC broadcasts with accompanist Frank Warbrick, often travelling to far-flung destinations in his airplane with his Joseph Guarnerius Filius Andre violin on board.

17

In MacMahon’s later years, he was the conductor of the Illawarra Symphony Orchestra and continued to give recitals. Thirty years on from his time in Geneva, a critic for the Sydney Morning Herald wrote, “one does indeed see signs of Szigeti’s outlook in the firm clearness of Mr. MacMahon’s playing; in its strong, rich even tone; and in a superb detachment from the hurly- burly of everyday emotion. His playing is always interesting.”

Until I discovered a collection of reel-to-reel tapes made by Moore MacMahon at the end of his life, descriptions like the above were the only traces left of his ‘interesting’ playing style. The tapes are home recordings, made when MacMahon was in his seventies. One can hear his impassioned Brahms’ sonatas or charming Kreisler’s miniatures with pianist Alan Jenkins, as well as his solo practice. This rare form of historical evidence reveals a playing style that is highly unusual to our modern-day ears. MacMahon employs portamenti freely, takes extreme liberties with the rhythms, and frequently varies the tempo to suit the emotional content of the music. Today, with a saturation of recorded music, we have become accustomed to performances that are clear, precise, and even.

MacMahon’s playing is none of these things. Groups of quavers are played with persistent inequality, his tempos are elastic, his tone is sometimes raspy and whispered, while at other times it’s declamatory and vocal-like. The violin and accompanying piano part weave in and out of synchronicity, each an interlocutor, distinct and commanding of attention.

Sydney violinist Phyllis McDonald (1905-1977), born in Darlington, was another child prodigy. After a period of study and work in London at the Royal Academy of Music, she returned to Sydney.

A pioneer for women in the field of music, McDonald was among the first five women to be admitted to the BBC Symphony Orchestra and was the first woman to conduct examinations for the AMEB in Australia. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s she could be heard frequently on ABC broadcasts and in concert. McDonald’s playing style is brought to life by her unpublished 78 RPM recordings, recently uncovered at the Calloway Centre in Perth. In her performance of Frank Hutchen’s Vision, McDonald exhibits a silvery vibrato, delicate portamenti and a full, brilliant sound.

Monk, Moore MacMahon and McDonald, all born at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century are perhaps the last generation of Australian violinists whose playing style was more aligned with the traditions of nineteenth-century performance. The surviving recordings as well as performance annotations from their musical lives broadly suggest the use of rich and varied portamenti, tempo flexibility and dramatic timbral contrasts. Another reason these violinists may have been forgotten, is that their playing styles reflected British musical traditions which were upheld in early twentieth-century Sydney. By the middle of the century, the trends which had previously dominated felt stale, and the best violinists of the earlier decades struggled to find a place in the new aesthetic.

While musical fashions have moved on, these traces of three violinists’ performing lives offer a rare insight into what violin performances may have sounded like in the concert halls of Sydney a century ago.

Julia Russoniello’s research exhibition on Cyril Monk, Phyllis McDonald, and Moore MacMahon: Listening Back is on display at the Sydney Conservatorium, August 25 through to October 7.

Kurt Elling and Charlie Hunter in Australia

Lyndon Pike talks to award-winning jazz musicians

Chicago based jazz vocalist Kurt Elling and prodigious musician and producer Charlie Hunter Hunter are recent visitors to Australia. Elling, a performer whose trailblazing style combines vocalese, reinterpretations of classic standards and stunning experimentation, has earned him two Grammy Awards and the moniker of ‘the standout male vocalist of our time’ from The New York Times. Hunter’s multi genre projects, spanning jazz, hip hop, acid jazz and funk across 17 studio albums and countless collaborations make him one of the world’s most respected masters of groove, with a skill for playing bass, lead and rhythm almost simultaneously on his custom six and seven stringed guitars. I caught up with Kurt and Charlie during their visit to Australia on the tour.

How do you strike a balance between improvisation and structure in your performances, particularly when reinterpreting a jazz standard?

Charlie: That’s a great question. And I’ll tell you, it’s more of a continuum, because when I’m playing with somebody like Bobby Previte, who is a master improviser, and I mean, a master of everything – we’ll play completely free where we don’t say anything about anything, and we just listen and we create. And you never know what that’s going to be. It’s about listening and creating, having a lot of vocabulary you can pull from, and being able to do that. And then you can have people like Branford Marsalis, who will improvise real jazz over those songs, and it’s just so powerful. Then you have what I’m doing with Kurt at the moment, where we’ll be improvising, we’ll just be grooving behind him. And the job is very different. You’ll have some improvisation, but the landscape is very open, and it’s all about the groove and the time and the feel. So you can interject little things that move the music ahead a little bit, but they’re subtext. They’re small things, but if you add these little things here and there, it brings a certain kind of a little spice to the groove!

You’ve received ten Grammy nominations and awarded two. How has receiving those accolades affected your career?

Kurt: It pushed open doors and allowed you opportunities that you may not have previously had as far as connections and working with certain people. I don’t know that you can ever point to a specific connection that gets made, but it certainly

helps in a cumulative sense for visibility and for audience members who might not buy a ticket otherwise to feel that they can bank on their wallet. They don’t have to worry about their sense of taste because it’s been bonafide or verified by more powerful people. It’s certainly more fun to win than not, and it’s certainly helpful over the course of a career to be recognized and to be taken up. That having been said, it’s still a slog and as much as we enjoy the road, we put up with a lot so that we can do this and that’s where you got to have your sense of humour intact and you’ve got to have the brotherhood functional and hit it as hard as you can when the downbeat comes.

Are there any musical genres you are yet to explore that you’ve thought, one day I’d like to dip into that?

Charlie: The music that I think probably most resonates with me is a lot of music that my mom listened to when I was a kid – 1920s blues stuff. Everything from Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, to Son House. I particularly enjoy Blind Blake, who is probably to me one of the best technical guitar players that ever lived, and that was 100 years ago. I’ve spent the last year on a mission to learn how he did what he did, because people still don’t know how he did it. Here was a man who lived 100 years ago that figured some stuff out that is still nearly impossible to play. I want to be of use in that department and really learn that style. So if there’s any style that I really spent a lot of time on, it would be that kind of style from that period.

I recently read a quote from Herbie Hancock. When asked why jazz was not part of the pop scene anymore, he said, “because music doesn’t matter anymore, people don’t care anymore about the music itself. They care about who makes the music.” With that in mind, what are your insights on where jazz is currently at?

Kurt: That’s a big question, the context is just so incredibly huge. Regular people are inundated with information all the time on every level, the internet is constantly bombarding them with their phones around all the time – it’s an information overload. There’s a whole lot of people who are coming out of music schools who can play incredible things. And some of them are going to make music that is also appealing to some of the people. Jazz has changed over the years from being very popular dance music, to being very cerebral, highly trained music of virtuoso improvisers, and that takes a lot of focus and a lot of concentration. And it means that the player who’s going to play that kind of thing is going to be captivated by the possibilities that they can hear and play.

Jazz tends to be complicated. When people are bombarded with so much information; they need something they can get to, and they need something that addresses the way that they feel right now. They want to deal in feelings. They don’t want to deal in math. They don’t want to deal in complications. They don’t want to deal with the brooding intensity of the individualist, man. They want to have fun, and they want to hear something that means something and they want to go. That seems to me to be a reality.

Has there been a particular performance space that stands out as unique or unexpected and has left a strong impression on you?

Charlie: This is a question which comes up a lot, yeah. But it’s always different. It always depends on the audience. You’re always going to try to get within the 90th percentile of your playing and performance, no matter where you play at, some places make it a little easier.

Kurt: For the most part, you could play the same place again and again and again. It’s different every time. So it’s really hard to say. Every audience, every night, has its own personality. It’s affected by the news of the day, the weather, what day of the week it is. You just never know. Sometimes you walk into a joint and you say, oh man, we’re going to die in here. And then it’s the most thrilling night of the month, And sometimes you’re like, all right, this place is going to kill, and for whatever reason, people are sort of midtemperature.

Has there been a memorable collaboration either in a live or studio setting where a fellow musician introduced you to a completely new technique or concept that has stayed with you?

Charlie: Not really, because I just grew up in this thing, and it’s just all around you. There are great people you see, and you want to learn what they do, but it’s always the wrong process. Like they say in painting, every layer is a player. You have to learn all of these different things – that’s what this whole game is about. You’re playing with people – to me, that’s the most exciting part. It’s just learning all of these things. And it might be a little technical thing, or it might be a conceptual thing that changes your whole way of thinking about stuff. The idea is that you’re plugged into that moment of learning, and you’re trying to make it a little better and a little more expansive every day.

Volunteer SpotlightMarilyn Schock

What influenced you to volunteer with Fine Music and when did it start?

Radio has always fascinated me since my teens. When I arrived in Australia 25 years ago, I heard about an open day at the station, and I was ready to audition immediately.

Where does your love of music come from?

My mother would take my sister and me to classical concerts from the age of two, and we were completely captivated by the music. I have been ever since. Music makes me happy.

What are your music favourites?

I have many favourites but mostly they are colourful, passionate, exciting, dreamy. Some are the Late Romantics such as Rachmaninov, Mahler, Brahms and Fauré. Then there are the opera composers such as Puccini, Verdi, Britten, and Bizet. Having lived in Spain for almost a decade, I love the music of Rodrigo, Albeniz, Granados, and de Falla. Not forgetting Piazzolla’s tangos, Gershwin, Korngold, and many other American and Latin American composers.

What do you enjoy most about your involvement with the station?

I love that I get to program and present my own Drive program twice a month. I choose music that I love and get to share it. And isn’t it fantastic that everyone who volunteers there loves music too!

What outstanding music moments or performances stay forever in your memory?

I remember being in the Sydney Opera House, spellbound by Shostakovich’s Symphony no 8. It increased more and more in intensity until it was almost deafening. Another time, I watched the bandoneon player Carel Kraayenhof with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra playing Piazzolla’s Bandoneon concerto, and ending with Marquez’ Danzon no 2 with all the percussion instruments right in front of the stage. It was such exciting music! Another unforgettable night was with the Taikoz Japanese drums when they played the concerto

for taiko drums and orchestra. Listening to those enormous drums being played with such energy, the power of the music was so exciting.

Was your working career in music?

No, but music has always been part of my life. I played flute in an amateur orchestra, percussion in a world music band, and still play percussion including castanets, for various gigs when they come up.

Do you have time for other interests outside Fine Music?

I was a full-time professional dancer in my 20s and 30s, specialising in flamenco and modern dance, working mainly in Spain, France, Greece, and Portugal. I loved the experience of living and working in dance and music amongst different cultures and languages. After several knee injuries, I had cut back on dancing but wanted to continue with music. So, I joined an amateur opera company, where I got to sing in the chorus and choreograph the dances. I also joined a few choirs and still sing with them today. Singing together is great fun and wonderful for the soul!

Latin American Piano Music

Move Records

MCD 639

Latin American Piano Music presents the music of seven composers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries: one, Luis G Jordá, was born in Catalonia but spent most of his career in Mexico City; another, Ernesto Lecuona, was Cuban; the rest were Mexican. Some of them spent time in Europe: Ernesto Elorduy, who composed, performed and published about 100 short piano pieces, studied with Clara Schumann and Anton Rubinstein; a set of his Tropical dances is included here. Most of the pieces are short, and there are no sonatas or even sonatinas. The most substantial works

The Art Of Collaboration

Collaboration involves a group of people working together to complete a shared goal. This is a captivating journey through the realm of jazz. The album delivers a fresh perspective on a variety of compositional forms and innovative interpretations of well-known pop songs alongside some original compositions and arrangements from Jim Kelly and the vocalist Simone Waddell. To complete her mission statement, Waddell has drawn upon the talents of some of this country’s top-notch musicians, confirming that she is an accomplished vocalist with phrasing that endorses her understanding of the lyrics, giving those wellknown numbers a fresh quality. The original compositions on

are Ricardo Castro’s Polonaise and Caprice-valse, the latter of which is rhythmically varied and includes some bravura moments. I found Lecuona’s compositions the most rewarding. Ante el Escorial achieves a fullness and richness of sound, suited to the monastery it depicts, through its use of the extremes of the keyboard. La comparsa, a work that much interested Ravel, features an African drum rhythm and allows us to experience the gradual approach and disappearance of a carnival procession.

the album are treated equally well. Guitarist Jim Kelly does fine justice to Neil Finn’s Fall at Your Feet as does Tommy Emmanuel on Burn for You, while Carl Dewhurst is ebulliently swinging on his solo on The Horses. Even purists will marvel because, overall, it’s still a jazz album at heart. The remaining collaborators fare equally well, each receiving varied treatment. Waddell stretches boundaries with her collaborators and demonstrates her mastery of vocals and composition. This coupled with her use of dynamics and phrasing, offers a compelling listening experience. Goal achieved.

Jenufa is pregnant, but her foster mother, the Kostelnicka (leader of the village), forbids her to marry her son Steva, Jenufa’s feckless sweetheart, until he stays sober for a year. Laca, Steva’s half brother, is hopelessly in love with Jenufa. The Kostelnicka pretends that Jenufa has gone to Vienna but, in fact, she has her baby in secret. Steva refuses to acknowledge the child and the Kostelnicka, fearing its existence will prevent Jenufa from marrying Laca, drowns the baby in the icy river while Jenufa is asleep. She tells Jenufa that she has been in a fever and the baby has died. The body is found as Jenufa and Laca are about to be married. The villagers turn on Jenufa but the Kostelnicka confesses to the crime. Jenufa forgives her foster mother and offers Laca his freedom, but he stays with her and they prepare to face the future together.

PRINCE ORLOFSKY: Heather Begg, mezz

ROSALINDE: Joan Sutherland, sop

ADELE: Monique Brynnel, sop

COLONEL FRANK: Gregory Yurisich, bar

ALFRED: Anson Austin, ten

Australian Opera Ch; Elizabethan Sydney O/ Richard Bonynge.

LP Decca D277D2 1:56

While walking home from a fancy-dress ball, Eisenstein leaves his friend, Dr Falke, sleeping

on a bench so that, when he wakes in the morning, he has to walk home dressed in the costume of a bat (Fledermaus) to the great amusement of passers-by. Two years later, Falke exacts his revenge. Eisenstein is about to go to prison to serve a short sentence for insulting behaviour. Falke persuades him to go first to a party being given by Prince Orlofsky. Falke then suggests to Rosalinde, Eisenstein's wife, that she go to the party disguised as a Hungarian countess so that she may see what her husband is doing instead of going to prison. At the party Eisenstein flirts with the mysterious 'Countess'. An involvement between Rosalinde's maid, Adele, and the prison governor, Colonel Frank, is also manipulated by Falke. After Eisenstein leaves, Alfred invites himself to supper in Rosalinde's room but she is saved when he is taken off to prison in place of Eisenstein. In the morning, all of the guests are summoned to the governor's office and the misunderstandings caused by Falke's plot are resolved happily. Tales from the Vienna Woods, op 325 (1868); Wine, women and song, op 333 (1869). New York Vocal Arts Ensemble/Raymond Beegle.

Ginevra, daughter of the King of Scotland, is betrothed to Ariodante. Polinesso, a jealous rival of Ariodante, wins the confidence of Ginevra's maid Dalinda and, with her help, makes Ariodante believe he is Ginevra’s lover. The King disowns Ginevra for her alleged infidelity, and they hear Ariodante has killed himself. Polinesso then arranges to kill Dalinda, the only witness to his plot. But Ariodante (whose suicide attempt was foiled), meets Dalinda in the woods and defeats the would-be assassins. Polinesso, seeking the King’s favour, defends Ginevra’s honour in a tournament, but is mortally wounded. Ariodante, having learned about Polinesso’s plot from Dalinda, appears and offers to be Ginevra’s champion. The dying Polinesso confesses and Ginevra is pardoned by the King.

Innocence revealed Prepared by Camille Mercep

200th ANNIVERSARY

Weber, C.M. Euryanthe. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Helmina von Chézy. First performed Vienna, 25 October 1823.

COUNT ADOLAR: Nicolai Gedda, ten EURYANTHE: Jessye Norman, sop

COUNT LYSIART: Tom Krause, bar

EGLANTINE: Rita Hunter, mezz

KING LUDWIG VI: Siegfried Vogel, bass Leipzig Radio Choir; Staatskapelle Dresden/ Marek Janowski.

EMI 7 63509 2 2:54

The noble Count Adolar is engaged to the virtuous Euryanthe, who has already rejected Count Lysiart. Out of jealousy, Lysiart now intends to destroy the couple’s happiness. He taunts Adolar by saying he doubts such virtuous women exist and provokes him into accepting a wager testing Euryanthe’s fidelity. However, Lysiart fails in his attempt to seduce Euryanthe and so forms an alliance with the equally jealous Eglantine who is in love with Adolar. Eglantine succeeds in drawing an embarrassing family secret from Euryanthe that she had been made to swear never to reveal. Adolar’s lovesick sister Emma committed suicide with poison from a ring and now her ghost restlessly roams the grounds. This ring, taken from Emma’s tomb, causes Adolar to believe that Euryanthe had given it to Lysiart, along with his secret.

In the presence of the unsuspecting Euryanthe, the wager is ended before the

entire court. Adolar loses his lands, his fortune and his bride. He publicly disowns Euryanthe who is speechless with horror and bewilderment. Her inability to defend herself is taken as proof of her guilt and Adolar banishes her to the wilderness. She is discovered there by the king’s hunting party. Regaining her power of speech, she reveals the full extent of Eglantine’s betrayal.

Eglantine and Lysiart are about to marry, when the king returns to court with news that Euryanthe has died of grief. Eglantine loses her mind and triumphantly reveals all. Lysiart kills her and is arrested. The remorseful Adolar is overjoyed when Euryanthe appears. She forgives him the idiotic wager and his false accusations. The lovers are reunited, and Emma’s soul also finds peace, as the innocent Euryanthe had wept over the ring.

Overture to Der Freischütz, op 77 (1817-21).
