OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS

1

Thursday 1 October, 8:00pm, The Romantic Century (programmed by Tony Smuts) This program features Ethel Smyth’s 1890 Serenade in D, her first composition to be heard publicly in England, at the large and prestigious venue of London’s Crystal Palace. Other works to be heard are Song of destiny, by Brahms, ardently admired by Smyth, and music by two of her teachers, Carl Reinecke and Heinrich von Herzogenberg

3

Saturday 3 October, 2:30pm, Saturday Matinee: Orchestral Grandeur (programmed by Stephen Wilson) Two years before he composed Fountains of Rome in 1916, Ottorino Respighi had written Sinfonia drammatica, in three movements and lasting an hour. It has been described by the Penguin Guide as being “rich in incident and lavish in its orchestral colours and virtuosity” and likely to be enjoyed by those who like Richard Strauss’s Alpine symphony. The program includes two works written contemporaneously, Holst’s The planets and Arthur de Greef’s Piano concerto no 1.

20

Tuesday 20 October, 2:00pm, The tintinnabulation that so musically wells (programmed by Paul Cooke) The title of this program is taken from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The bells”, set by Rachmaninov as a choral symphony in an adaptation by the Russian poet Balmont, and the concluding work in this program. The sound or sense of bells is heard in other compositions ranging from Fanny Mendelssohn (inspired by Paganini) to Helen Grime and including David Briggs’s organ Improvisation on the bell chime of St Sernin.

23

Friday 23 October, 8:00pm, Baroque and Before (programmed by Glenys Eddy) This program surveys composers who lived in the period from the mid-16th to the mid-17th century, an era which saw a number of important musical shifts in melody (polyphony giving way to monody), harmony (the rise of basso continuo), tonality (from modal to major and minor) and instrumentation (writing for specific instruments and combinations of them). Composers featured range from John Dowland to Girolamo Frescobaldi.

COVER IMAGE Dame Ethel Mary Smyth DBE (22 April 1858 – 8 May 1944) was an English composer and a member of the women’s suffrage movement. © Chronicle / Alamy Her compositions include songs, works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral works operas. 2MBS 102.5 FM and | 2MBS Digital DAB+ | www.2mbsfinemusicsydney.com | 2MBS listening app on Apple or Android 3

20:00 AT THE OPERA Premiere anniversaries, Part 10 Prepared by Camille Mercep Britten, B. The rape of Lucretia, op 37. Opera in two acts. Libretto by Ronald Duncan. First performed Glyndebourne, 12 July 1946. MALE CHORUS: Peter Pears, ten FEMALE CHORUS: Heather Harper, sop LUCRETIA: Janet Baker, cont COLLATINUS: John Shirley-Quirk, bass LUCIA: Jenny Hill, sop BIANCA: Elizabeth Bainbridge, cont TARQUINIUS: Benjamin Luxon, bar JUNIUS: Bryan Drake, bar English CO/Benjamin Britten. Decca 478 5364 1:48 Set around 500BC - Rome is ruled by the Etruscan upstart Tarquinias Superbus. Away on a campaign, Tarquinias, drinking with his generals Collatinus and Junius, discuss their bet of the night before, when they paid a surprise visit on their wives in Rome. Only Lucretia, the wife of Collatinus was found virtuously at home. Junius, jealous and angry, taunts Tarquinius that even he wouldn’t try to dishonour such chastity. Later Tarquinius secretly leaves the tent and rides to Rome to Collatinus’ house. There he finds Lucretia quietly spinning with her attendants, Lucia and Bianca. Lucretia is obliged to offer him hospitality for the night, even though she and her attendants have misgivings. During the night he enters Lucretia’s bedroom and watches her sleep, then kisses her. She still asleep thinks it is her husband, Collatinus, and responds. She wakes and is horrified to find it is Tarquinias who has kissed her. He threatens her at sword point and then rapes her. The following morning she sends a message to Collatinus, summoning him to come home immediately. After telling her husband how she was raped, she stabs herself. The muleteer, Ramiro, asks the clockmaker, Torquemada, to repair his watch. As it is the day on which Torquemada tends the Toledo municipal clocks, Ramiro must wait. Torquemada’s wife, Concepción, takes advantage of his absence on this day to plan assignations with gentlemen friends. The action involves multiple concealments of Concepción’s lovers, a poet Gonzalve and a banker Don Iñigo, in grandfather clocks which are carried upstairs and downstairs by Ramiro. Impressed by how easily Ramiro carries the clocks (and their load) upstairs, Concepción is attracted to him. With Gonzalve and Don Iñigo now each stuck in clocks, Torquemada returns from his municipal duties. Both eventually escape and, to save face, they each purchase a clock. Concepción muses that she can wait for the muleteer to appear regularly now that his watch is repaired.
