PROGRAMS NOVEMBER 2026
NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTS
7
Saturday 7 November, 2:30pm, Saturday Matinee: Orchestral Grandeur (programmed by James Nightingale) This program features Brahms’s Symphony No 1, first performed in Karlsruhe, Germany, 150 years ago on 4 November 1876, and now one of the most performed and admired of all orchestral compositions. He’d begun work on a first symphony a couple of decades before and destroyed several attempts, but the completed work balances tradition with creativity, informed by the example of Beethoven but speaking in his own voice. Also included are his Serenade No 1 and Piano Concerto No 1, both works composed during the long gestation of the symphony.

Monday 9, 16 and 23 November, 1:00pm, Joan Sutherland centenary (programmed by Gerald Holder)
16
Joan Sutherland was born on 7 November 1926, making her professional debut in 1952 at the Royal Opera as First Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute and her farewell in 1990 at Covent Garden in a guest appearance in Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, joined on stage by Pavarotti and Marilyn Horne. Gerald’s programs revisit many of the highlights of her career and remind us of the remarkable range and extent of her performances.

Saturday 14 November, 10:00am, Musicians of Choice (programmed by Susanne von Richter) For today’s Musicians of Choice, Susanne has chosen the Seraphim Trio. Praised by The Australian as “Without doubt one of Australia’s most impressive small ensembles”, the musicians in the trio are Anna Goldsworthy (piano), Helen Ayres (violin) and Tim Nankervis (cello). They perform piano trios by Clara Schumann and Germaine Tailleferre, and are joined by oboist Diana Doherty in Hummel’s arrangement of Mozart’s Prague Symphony and violist Jacqueline Cronin and double bassist David Campbell in Schubert’s Trout Quintet.

Sunday 29 November, 3:00pm, Sunday Special (programmed by David Brett) Late in the month, we have another program dedicated to a beloved composition composed 150 years ago, this time Tchaikovsky’s symphonic fantasy Francesca da Rimini. Tchaikovsky had been persuaded to write an opera based on the adulterous affair between Paolo and Francesco which lands them, in Dante’s Divine Comedy if not in real life, in the second circle of hell. Plans for the opera fell through but this orchestral work resulted. Also included in the program are excerpts from two operas about Francesca, by Rachmaninov and Zandonai, that did see the light of day.

Count Gil suspects his wife, Susanna, of having an affair after he smells tobacco smoke in the house. Neither he nor the servant, Sante smoke. She admits to having a secret, but refuses to tell him what it is. He eventually catches her with a cigarette. They forgive each other and swear eternal love while smoking together. Rossini, G. L’inganno felice. Opera in one act. Libretto by Giuseppe Foppa. First performed Venice, 8 January 1812. BERTRANDO: Kenneth Tarver, ten ISABELLA: Corinna Mologni, sop TARABOTTO: Lorenzo Regazzo, bass BATONE: Marco Vinco, bass ORMONDO: Simon Bailey, bass Czech Chamber Soloists/Alberto Zedda. Naxos 8.660233-34 1:26 Isabella, wife of Duke Bertrando has been thought dead for 10 years. Ormondo, a confidant of the Duke, was outraged when she rejected his advances, and as revenge had convinced the Duke that she had been unfaithful. Under Ormondo’s orders, Batone abducted her and cast her adrift on the sea. However, she survived and was rescued by Tarabotta, the respected leader of a mining community, who convinced everyone that she was his niece, named ‘Nisa’. Tarabotto is informed that Duke Bertrando is expected to visit the area. Seeing Isabella with a picture of the Duke, Tarabotto asks her about her past and she finally reveals her identity to him. The Duke’s visit to the mine presents her with an opportunity to convince him of her innocence, and Tarabotto promises to help her. The Duke arrives with Ormondo and Batone and goes off with Tarabotto to inspect the area. Batone asks ‘Nisa’ for some water. She immediately recognizes him as her abductor, and he is shocked at her resemblance to Isabella. Tarabotto returns to tell Isabella she must be the one to give the Duke a map of the mine. Tarabotto watches Bertrando’s reaction as he sees ‘Nisa’, who reminds him so much of the wife he still loves. Meanwhile, Ormondo and Batone plot to abduct ‘Nisa’ that night, but Tarabotto overhears their plan. Bertrando catches them in the act and Isabella’s true identity is revealed. Bertrando and Isabella are happily reunited. 22:30 AUSTRALIAN SELECTION Prepared by James Nightingale Greenbaum, S. Sonata: A trillion miles of darkness (2016).
