Rodolfo, son of Count Walter, shares a deep love with Luisa Miller, daughter of an old soldier. The Count wants Rodolfo to marry his cousin, Federica, but Rodolfo refuses, revealing that he knows a terrible secret about the Count’s past. The furious Count imprisons Miller, and his aide, Wurm, forces Luisa to write to Rodolfo saying she loves another. Rodolfo confronts Luisa, who admits writing the letter. Rodolfo poisons both himself and Luisa. Dying, Luisa tells him how Wurm forced her to write the letter. Miller, Count Walter and Wurm arrive and Rodolfo summons his last strength to kill Wurm before he falls dead beside Luisa.

BUTTERCUP: Christine Palmer, cont D’Oyly Carte Opera Company; Royal PO/ James Walker.

1:29

Josephine, daughter of the captain of the ship HMS Pinafore, is in love with a lower-class sailor, Ralph Rackstraw. Her father, Captain Corcoran, intends her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Sir Joseph’s advocacy of the equality of humankind encourages Ralph and Josephine to declare their love for each other and they eventually plan to elope. The captain discovers this plan and sends Ralph to the brig.

Little Buttercup now reveals her long-held secret. Many years ago, when she ‘practised’ baby-farming, she had cared for two babies, one ‘of low condition’, the other ‘a regular patrician’. She confesses that she mixed up the babies. Ralph was the well-born; the Captain was the low-born. Sir Joseph now realises that Ralph should be the Captain and the Captain should be a lowly sailor. Sir Joseph’s marriage with Josephine is now out of the question. Despite his former championing of equality, it does not extend to his own marriage to the daughter of a common sailor. He hands her to Captain Rackstraw. The former Captain, now of humble social rank, is free to marry Buttercup.

The jury is assembled to hear a case of breach of promise. The defendant, Edwin, tells

the jury he became bored with the plaintiff, Angelina, and left her for another woman. The Learned Judge admits to having himself done the same thing but the jury and the public can see no wrong in him. Angelina arrives in her wedding dress instantly capturing the hearts of the Judge and jury. She feigns distress as her Counsel outlines Edwin’s betrayal. Edwin offers to marry both Angelina and his new love. At first the Judge finds this reasonable but then rules that it is would be ‘burglary’ (meaning to say ‘bigamy’). Angelina embraces Edwin to demonstrate her love (but thinking of the huge amount of damages Edwin would have to pay). Edwin counters by proclaiming that he is a smoker, a drunkard, and a bully when tipsy and the plaintiff would not be able to live with him (thinking of the lesser damages he would pay). The Judge resolves the case by offering to marry Angelina himself, a successful outcome for all concerned.

1:31

A political prisoner, the nobleman Alexander Petrovich Goryanchikov, arrives at a Siberian prison camp and is interrogated by the Commandant who orders him to be flogged. Meanwhile, the prisoners have found an eagle with a broken wing and begin to tease it. They admire its defiance and decide to look after it. As various prisoners relate the crimes that have brought them to Siberia, Goryantchikov is dragged in, near death, after his flogging. A year has passed and Goryanchikov has befriended a young Tartar boy, Alyeya, and has taught him to read and write. A prisoner, resentful of Goryanchikov having the means to buy tea, attacks him but Alyeya gets injured during the scuffle. In the prison hospital, Shiska tells Luka, who is dying from tuberculosis, the story of the girl whom he had married, who was rumoured to have been dishonoured by Filka. When Shiskov discovered she still loved Filka, he killed her. When Luka dies, Shishkov recognises him as Filka. The Commandant informs Goryanchikov that he has been pardoned and apologises for the flogging. As Goryanchikov is freed, the prisoners release the eagle whose wing has now fully healed. The guard orders them back to work.

Venus encourages the Pleasures to reign in Cupid’s palace. Jealousy and her attendants attempt to disrupt them by causing them and Cupid to fall asleep. Venus urges Jealousy to awaken them, and Cupid urges all mortals to pay him homage. They then proceed to reenact the story of Dardanus.

Dardanus, son of Jupiter, co-founded the royal house of Troy with Teucer, King of Phrygia. They have since fallen out, and are now at war. Teucer’s daughter, Iphis, has feelings for Dardanus but is discouraged by her father.

Teucer announces a military alliance with Anténor, another Trojan leader, to whom Iphis

is to be given in marriage (to her dismay). The priest-magician, Isménor, offers to help Dardanus woo Iphis, displaying his powers by causing an eclipse of the sun. He bestows on Dardanus a staff that will allow him to disguise himself as Isménor. This power is invoked and Iphis approaches the supposed Isménor, seeking help in overcoming her love for Dardanus, who sheds his disguise and pledges his reciprocal love. Embarrassed, Iphis runs away.

Dardanus has been captured. Anténor tells Iphis that this military success allows them to marry that day but Iphis rejects him. The Phrygian people’s victory celebrations are short-lived, as they learn that Neptune has despatched a sea-monster in retaliation for the mistreatment of Jupiter’s son. Anténor prepares for battle again.

Jupiter orders Venus to free Dardanus in his sleep. She summons Dreams which depict Dardanus fighting the sea-monster which, so encouraged, he proceeds to do. He also rescues Anténor, who doesn’t recognise Dardanus and presents him with a sword in gratitude. Dardanus asks Anténor to promise that Iphis can reject him as a suitor if she chooses.

In the belief that it was Anténor who killed the monster, Teucer welcomes him home triumphantly. Dardanus offers to give back Anténor’s sword but Anténor keeps his word by abandoning his wish to marry Iphis. Venus descends and reconciles the warring parties, and Cupid prepares for the marriage of Dardanus and Iphis.

Elvira mourns the loss of the love of her husband, Mustafa. Mustafa, the ruler of Algeria, plans to marry her to Lindoro, his Italian slave. He orders his henchman, Haly, to find him an Italian wife. An Italian ship is ship-wrecked on the coast and, on board, is Lindoro’s fiancée, Isabella, who has come to look for him. She and her travelling companion, Taddeo, are found by Haly and brought to Mustafa, who is delighted to have an Italian beauty to marry. Isabella immediately recognises Lindoro and upsets Mustafa’s plans by insisting that Lindoro should become her personal servant. Left alone, they plan to escape but are foiled when Mustafa arrives. Lindoro tells Mustafa that the reason that Isabella is delaying marrying him is because he does not belong to the noble order of the Papataci, but that he and Taddeo can initiate him. During the preparations for the ceremony, the guards are given too much to drink and the lovers escape. On realising that he has been tricked, Mustafa begs Elvira’s forgiveness. No more Italian girls for him!

Colonel Fairfax is to be beheaded that day for the crime of sorcery. Wilfred, the head gaoler at the Tower of London, is in love with Phoebe. Phoebe’s brother, Leonard, has been appointed a Yeoman of the Guard. Their father, Sergeant Merryll, is anxious to rescue Fairfax who had twice saved his life in battle. He plans that Phoebe will get the key to Fairfax’s cell from Wilfred, while Leonard and Fairfax will exchange identities. The charge of sorcery against Fairfax was made by his wicked cousin, Sir Clarence Poltwhistle, who will inherit his estate if he dies unmarried. Before he dies, Fairfax asks that he be allowed to marry any available woman who will receive 100 crowns for her assistance. His request is granted. A young singer, Elsie, needs money to buy medicine for her ailing mother. She is offered the chance to earn 100 crowns for marrying the condemned man. Her companion, a jester, Jack Point, wishes to marry Elsie but is assured that she will be widowed very quickly. Elsie is blindfolded and led off for the secret ceremony. Meanwhile Phoebe distracts Wilfred and steals his keys which she gives to her father who goes to free Fairfax. Sergeant Meryll disguises Fairfax as his son Leonard.

All is ready for the execution. Wilfred, Fairfax (disguised as Leonard) and two Yeomen go to fetch Fairfax. They return and Fairfax announces his own disappearance. Point is distraught at the escape of Elsie’s husband, Wilfred is blamed, and all rush off to hunt for Fairfax. Jack Point reveals the secret wedding to Wilfred and convinces him to swear that he shot Fairfax dead as he swam across the river to escape. Wilfred agrees to save his own skin. Fairfax discovers the identity of his secret bride and, disguised as Leonard, attempts to woo her but is rejected. He is about to reveal himself when a shot is heard. Wilfred and Point declare that Wilfred has shot Fairfax so Point asks Elsie to marry him. Fairfax (still disguised as Leonard) instructs Point in the art of wooing but it soon becomes clear that he is wooing Elsie for himself and Elsie is responding. Angry and hurt, Phoebe inadvertently reveals to Wilfred that ‘Leonard’ is in fact Fairfax. In her remorse, she agrees to marry Wilfred if he remains silent. The real Leonard then returns and announces that a reprieve has come for Fairfax. When Elsie arrives for her wedding to ‘Leonard’, she learns that Fairfax lives. Fairfax arrives but the distraught Elsie does not turn to see his face.

He keeps up the pretence until Elsie begs for her freedom to go to ‘Leonard’ but he refuses. Finally Elsie turns to see his face and finally recognises him. Everyone is happy except the broken-hearted Jack Point.

Cox and Box. Operetta in one scene. Libretto by W.S. Gilbert. First performed London, 1867.

BOUNCER: Donald Maxwell, bass

COX: Neil Davies, bar

BOX: James Gilchrist, ten

BBC NO of Wales/Richard Hickox.

Chandos CHAN 10321 36

Retired military man, Sergeant Bouncer, has double-let an apartment to both James John Cox, a hatter, who works days, and John James Box, a printer, who works nights. Bouncer swaps over their personal belongings in the brief gap when neither man is home, so neither knows about the other, although they sometimes pass on the stairs, and Cox is suspicious because the room often reeks of tobacco and he wonders why his groceries keep disappearing.

Once Cox has left for work, Bouncer rearranges everything before Box arrives, settles in and sets his dinner to cook while he takes a nap. Cox has scored an unexpected day off, arrives home, removes what he takes for Bouncer’s food and puts his own meal on to cook. There’s a flurry of farcical action as each man repeatedly discards the other’s food, before the two men suddenly come face to face. After some discussion they agree that this is all Bouncer’s fault and make friends with each other.

As they chat, they discover that Cox’s fiancée, Penelope Anne, whom he’d rather like to ditch, also happens to be Box’s ex-fiancée, whom he has already ditched by faking his suicide. They gamble to decide who should NOT get the girl, but both men use loaded dice. A series of contradictory letters arrive which resolve to show Penelope Anne had married someone else, a Mr. Knox. Cox and Box decide they must be long-lost brothers and, as such, they agree to share the apartment.
