The Frances Henry Health Center provides highly skilled nursing care 24 hours a day. “We are able to have 61 people in our health center, which is smaller than many communities, so it’s a more intimate setting,” said Eckberg, Tudor Oaks Executive Director. “Now with our new dining room, activity center, restorative room and therapy gym, residents have state-of-the-art health care at their fingertips.”

NEW Rehab Center Offers Innovative Therapy Programs

Equipped with treadmills, recumbent bike, free weights and other equipment, the staff develops plans to help residents improve or regain strength, recover balance and overall functionality. “We gear the program and activities to what residents can do.” Tudor Oaks recently added an OmniVR Virtual Rehabilitation System to the therapy gym. The advanced, yet easy to use technology, has a sophisticated 3D camera and specialized computer software to track a resident’s precise movements, allowing them to interact in a virtual world. For those who require speech therapy, “a therapist evaluates and helps residents with language, communication and swallowing disorders to improve language expression, comprehension, and other oral-motor skills.”

Wellness is the best approach to feeling better, stronger, longer!

With all the activities to choose from, it’s no surprise residents love the Wellness Center. It’s a great way to stay active, healthy and get the most enjoyment out of all that Tudor Oaks has to offer.

Tudor Oak wellness director, Lisa Grimmer explains, “The wellness programs are offered and designed to include everyone at the community, including health center residents, and concentrate on six dimensions of wellness: social, spiritual, physical, mental, emotional and vocational.”

To meet the demand of residents, the wellness center offers a number of daily fitness classes to improve strength, balance and cardio function. “It’s so convenient for the residents, and it’s a beautiful center,” said Grimmer. To participate in the wellness programs, residents are assessed to determine their level of fitness. “We design activities to suit the ability and fitness of residents and monitor them as they improve over time, which of course is always a good thing.”

Other popular attractions include the warm water pool for aquatic exercise classes and, of course, Wii bowling and tennis. The latest resident craze is seated volleyball where teams compete for bragging rights. “They’re

anxious to be here. They are always talking up the good time they’ve had in class to new residents.” ‘The more the merrier’ seems to be the class motto.

The wellness staff also designs activities to promote mental acuity. “There are activities that focus on direction and speed changes to get residents thinking about multi-tasking,” she said. For many residents, Grimmer wants them standing, moving and most importantly, engaged in the activity.

The vocational component of wellness comes in the form of informative guest speakers. Grimmer states, “Residents like to become involved, and volunteer around Tudor Oaks. They like to deliver the mail, help plant in the communal garden or use the computer to do online research.”

The wellness programs and interaction provide residents with many benefits from the social aspect to physical and mental stimulation – it all works together.

Working with the wellness team played a major role in her success. Terry said, “Access to the pool, fitness center and wellness classes, along with a new sense of self discipline and encouragement from the wellness staff, were vital to my success.”
