Sitting amidst open countryside on the borders of Cambridgeshire and Rutland, about eight miles south of Stamford, and just minutes from access to the A1 North and South, a substantial, highly individual, late seventies home, with rooms of huge proportions flooded with natural light, has been extended and modernised to present as an immaculate, unique property standing on just under two acres.

In 2011, having spent forty years living overseas, and in pursuit of the perfect home, not wishing to be in the commuter belt of the South East, the current owners of Talbot House decided to focus their attention around the Stamford area with its wonderful Georgian architecture.

“By chance and good fortune, we located a property between the villages of Elton and Wansford, both quintessential English villages with long histories,” says the owner. “Set well back from the road, it offered an exclusive and private domain, its location also a winning factor: close to main arterial roads and a short drive to the railway station in Peterborough, with fast trains to King’s Cross taking fifty minutes. If you have younger children, there are many outstanding state and private schools within a short drive.” Talbot House was purchased, and whilst still living abroad – so a significant logistical challenge - over the next two years they transformed the property into their ideal home.

The result is an impressive, executive dwelling, with their approach to design and function deeply imprinted in the fabric of the building. Italian porcelain tiling both for the interior, and the exterior to the swimming pool, and the creation of a Mediterranean inspired pool complex including a Bar and Lounge area were major additions. “The arches of the lounge area were painted in a tone of pink copied from the famous pink presidential palace in Buenos Aires, Argentina,” informs the owner. “The bar was Christened The Dunhill Bar because, being valued clients of the London Dunhill shop, they contributed a Dunhill leather football!”

The house itself was also redeveloped; underfloor heating was installed throughout, so too a bespoke, solid oak kitchen with granite worktops and an expansive adjoining utility room with contemporary storage units. A built-in water softener is a feature, and the multitude of both integrated and free-standing appliances are all Miele, all included in the sale. Windows and doors throughout, including the automated garage doors, were supplied by Everest.

In every room of the property, no expense has been spared, with the custom designed study and the bespoke cabinetry of all the bedrooms, supplied by Neville Johnson. Every bathroom, shower room, lavatories and associated tiling was supplied by Villeroy & Boch, and all solid brass tap fittings came from the renowned German supplier, Dornbracht.

Interior furnishings are of superb quality: “We sourced all curtain materials from the world renowned supplier, Scalamandre,” declares the owner. “Of particular note, is the feature chinoiserie hand-printed wallpaper in the dining room. Even the glue had to be handmade and we were only able to have it completed and installed by experts from Chelsea who understood the incredibly high standards demanded by the manufacturer!”

The entire first floor was fitted with an HRV system, which ensures the constant supply of clean filtered air to every bedroom, but – in the words of the owner - “perhaps the greatest foresight was the installation of the market leading smart home supplier, Gira, using KNX software. This provides a future-proof and scalable infrastructural solution to control all aspects of your home from your phone or tablet. The limit to its capacity and functionality is your own imagination!”

The grounds of Talbot House equal the stature and calibre of the house itself. The neat tarmac drive that leads through smart, electrically controlled, metal gates gives a taste of what lies beyond.

Beautifully private with the house nestling between clipped hedging and mature trees, expansive lawns are at the front and back. “With the help of a garden designer and a National Trust tree surgeon, we completely transformed the gardens and paddock to reflect the house itself: a place of symmetry, durability, peace, and relaxation,” says the owner. “The long driveway is lined on one side by Japanese cherry blossom trees. The hidden rose garden and the Stonehenge circle of yew hedging in the paddock provide wonderful and secluded spaces to meditate or to have a glass of wine with your family and friends.” The gardens and house at night have a magical ambience created by both ground and security lighting. “The house is well protected with 24/7 security and fire monitoring,” attests the owner.

“In the summer one can also enjoy entertaining on the patio under a large, automated awning supplied by the dependable German company, Markilux, and, if it’s dinner, you’ll be looking down on the illuminated garden.”

The location is extremely convenient – although in a rural landscape, within just a fifteen minute drive you reach Peterborough train station, likewise Rutland Water in the other direction, or southwards to Oundle. Stamford is even nearer only ten minutes away. As well as the A1 on the doorstep, the A47 will take you West to Leicester and East to King’s Lynn and the beautiful Norfolk coast.

“Now we are relocating to be nearer our first grandchild and will leave this home with wonderful memories,” concludes the owner.
