Nature

The close connection between Middleton and the natural world is evident to see. Residential development is sympathetic to its surroundings, the character buildings nestled between sea and woodland. To the south, the waters of the Sussex Bay lap at the beaches, intersected by hardwood groynes, for a spectacular, calming view to the horizon. Glorious sunrises and sunsets can be experienced on this stretch of south-facing beach. At Middleton's northern borders, the Woodland Trust manages Worms Wood, a large native woodland of oak, ash, maple, birch and cherry, winding with paths and a central glade with a wooden bench. Watercourses and ponds support much wildlife in this nurtured site.

The local marine environment has recently benefited from a near-shore trawler ban, which has supported the return of the enchanting kelp forests which in turn nurture life for so many sea creatures. Some of the incredible and protected species that are known to live in the area are the highly-protected Spiny and Short-snouted Seahorses, as well as Dolphins, Seals and Rays.

This area is ecologically important as a significant bird, bat and insect migration route for common as well as for rare and endangered species.

Middleton-on-Sea is rich and diverse in ecology and is greatly supported and protected by the inhabitants and all who cherish the planet.

Middleton-on-Sea Parish Council

The village is very fortunate to have a strong, active Parish Council, being a tier of local government closest to their electorate and best placed to serve Middleton on Sea. Representing this small community, they help with crime prevention, helping local groups, managing open spaces and campaigning for and delivering better services and facilities, in a personal way. They take good care of the residents, actingas local champions for the village and its people.

Middleton-on-Sea Association

Middleton-on-Sea is administered by MOSA

“MOSA holds a clear definition of what development is sympathetic to the area - and what is not. It works hard to ensure the balance of progress and tradition is sustainable. MOSA is responsible for the maintenance for the roads and verges it owns, and importantly encourages cordial relationships between neighbours."

“The special character of the estate, largely planned by Captain Henry Rowlands Starkey Caldicott (1886-1980), derives from the informality and spaciousness of the layout, the quality of many of the buildings and the mature landscaping. The restrictive time frame of the development to a common standard has ensured the spacious and cohesive appearance, whilst the individuality of each property has created an atmosphere of diversity.”

This area of Special character has been enjoyed and cared for over many years, long before the formal designation in October 1996. A brief history and how the foresight and vision of planning in the formative years contributed so much to our present environment is described in the Design Statement found on the website: History of the Estate | Middleton on Sea Association | MOSA (mosassociation.org)
