SELLER INSIGHT
Situated in the charming coastal town of Goodwick is Ebenezer, a former Welsh nonconformist chapel that has been beautifully converted into stunning five-bedroom family home, which boasts a pretty garden and spectacular views.
“In terms of what attracted us to the property, I’d say it was a combination of the location in this beautiful part of Pembrokeshire and the fact that the exterior of the chapel was actually pretty and inviting, not austere or forbidding,” says the owner. “I’m from this area and knew people who had attended Ebenezer as a chapel – the organist, for instance, was our family’s piano teacher!”
“The interior is, of course, now dramatically different. With some chapel conversions, features such as the pulpit are retained, but I would have found that oppressive. The priority here was to establish a comfortable, spacious fivebedroom home, making the most of the wonderful light coming through the numerous windows and showing the fine bones of the building, namely the grand A-frames, now in view. Previously they had been hidden by a suspended ceiling, but the added height after opening up to the roof has been wonderful. Some details of the original interior have been incorporated and sit well in a modern layout – corners of the pulpit and the curves of the elders’ ‘Big Seat’ form the four corners of the kitchen island, for example. The wood from the railing of the chapel gallery was used for the panelling in the downstairs den, and the pendulum lights in the dining area and those in the hallway are the original fittings from the 1920s. Overall, though, the priority has been to have white walls and plenty of window views, which are pictures in their own right.”
“The meaning of the name Ebenezer, from the Hebrew, is ‘stone of help’ or ‘stone of refuge’. This house has most certainly been that for over a decade, but never more so than during the years of the pandemic. The space, the views, the opportunity to be out in the garden – which has been developing over ten years so is now wonderfully well-established – or out on the clifftop: they all ensured that there was no claustrophobia, and fear could be held at bay.”
“The main kitchen, dining and living space on the first floor has the biggest window in the house and the eye turns towards the sky a hundred times a day. It’s an easy, relaxing space for family life and great for parties too. I love living up on the first floor, looking out over the sea, the town of Fishguard up on the hill and the Preseli Mountains beyond.”
“I’ll miss the space and light, mainly. Standing at the big window watching the sunrise from behind the Preseli Hills or clocking the white ferry boat sail in from Ireland… It’s a great house for feeling hopeful and safe but also for looking out at far horizons.”*

The house is great for having friends to stay. All the bedrooms have en-suite shower rooms, so there’s privacy and room to get away, but also a big central space to pack in the revelers. 2022 is the tenth Christmas Day for Ebenezer as a family home – all have been hectic and wonderful. My eldest grandchild is nine a nd it is to Ebenezer that Father Christmas has brought his presents every year of his life! My daughter’s 30th birthday also stands out. Musicians performed for us from the mezzanine and t he singing from the audience blew them away.”
I love the sea, the light, the fact that I can walk to clifftop, woods and beach without taking the car. Likewise the convenience of having sh ops and amenities such as the Post Office, the pub and the pharmacy close by has been wonderful. I’ve also relished the sense of community; this has always felt like a very safe and healt hy place to live.”
