he national open of Austria, has a rich history on the European Tour. A glance down the list of previous winners turns up names such as Bernhard Langer, Paul McGinley and Ronan Rafferty; players who have numerous European Tour wins to their name and in the case of Langer, two Masters titles. Fast forward to the present day and the Lyoness Open has achieved high status on the European Tour and in world golf. The tournament features in the coveted Race to Dubai and a recent agreement between the European Tour, sponsors Lyoness and promotion company Golf Open Event GmbH will see the event remain part of the European Tour International schedule until at least 2019. This year will be the seventh time the Lyoness Open has been staged at Diamond Country Club in Atzenbrugg, Austria. Having first hosted the event in 2010, the Lyoness Open has gone from strength to strength at this tremendous golfing venue. The primary reason behind the continued success of the tournament is perhaps the host venue. “The Diamond Country Club is one of the best clubs in Austria and is often decorated with the honour of ‘Golf Club of the Year’ in Austria,” says Heri Hahn of InsideSports. “It is located in a fantastic landscape near the Danube, the biggest river in Austria. Players are always deeply impressed by the view over the whole area, but it’s not only the beautiful place, it’s also the level of the course. There are a lot of difficult holes, where the tournament can be won or lost.” Indeed, it’s rare for a player to win the Lyoness Open at Diamond Country Club by more than two strokes, and since 2010, there have been three play-offs, ensuring a dramatic finish to a superb tournament. Throughout the six previous Lyoness Open tournaments, not one player has successfully defended the title they won the previous year. This highlights just how difficult this tournament is to win, along with the challenges faced by players in terms of opposition and the course itself. One thing is certain, spectators always receive value for money when attending the Lyoness Open at Diamond Country Club, and there is plenty to look forward to at this year’s event. “Spectators will be provided with full European Tour standards. The tournament village offers great fun for golfers and non-golfers and presents Austria as the great golf destination it really is. In the VIP Area, guests are provided with all-day hospitality, overlooking the scenic 18th hole of the Diamond Course,” comments Hahn. “Since the front and back nine of the Diamond Course will be switched around again, the Par 3, 18th hole offers the chance to see all of the final and most important shots ➤➤

of Europe’s elite golfers. Some interesting changes have been made to the course and it will present players with new challenges.”

not only includes the European Tour Performance Institute, but also the establishment of a Golf Management Diploma, in conjunction with nearby Krems University.

It’s clear Diamond Country Club takes into account both golfers and spectators when preparing the course. Great care goes in to the set-up, not only to offer variety and a challenge for players, but also to provide spectators with the best views possible of Europe’s top golfers in action. The tournament village has been subjected to a re-vamp for 2016 and will be set up differently to previous years. There will be entertainment for the whole family, and children can take their first swing of a golf club. Naturally, the golfers are also well looked after, with the majority taking advantage of the lovely, modern suites in the new hotel, located next to the club. The Diamond Club Hotel, which was built last year, boasts 42 luxurious rooms, available for bookings throughout the year. Meanwhile, the Diamond Clubhouse is home to the 2014 Golf Restaurant of the Year, and Gerhard Becher, who is in charge of gastronomic services, is rightly proud of this achievement.

The Lyoness Open is becoming a bigger and better tournament year after year, and Diamond Country Club is also developing into one of the top venues on the European Tour. The 2012 champion, Bernd Wiesberger, has previously talked about how important the Lyoness Open is, not only for him as an Austrian golfer, but for all the Austrian players who work hard on the European Tour. The progress being made at Diamond Country Club will serve both the golfers and the spectators well, many of whom will want to get on the golf course themselves, having seen the tournament set-up.

Alex Kleszcz, the Business Development Manager at Diamond Country Club, is delighted with the continued progress and development at the golf club. “We are expanding our practice facilities quickly and building a state-of-the-art academy, with a European Tour Performance Institute, and this is only one of the goals that are set for the future.” David MacLaren, Director of Property & Venue Development for the European Tour, points out further developments at the Diamond Country Club, which

In the heart of the

Royal Borough Hip and happening or calm and cultured, London has it all. Giselle Whiteaker explores the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

P

art of the excitement of a city the size of London is that you can never really see it all. You think you know it, you have a favourite coffee shop and you can navigate the tube, but there’s always something new to discover. I’ve yet to tire of exploring London’s nooks and crannies. On my last visit, I stayed in the east. This time, I’m discovering whether the so-called “Royal Borough” of Kensington and Chelsea lives up to its name. It certainly has a genteel air, with elegant streetscapes and rows of gleaming white townhouses lining the streets. I feel almost like I belong when the doorman swoops down to lift my overnight bag up the three stairs into The Kensington, touted as London’s finest townhouse hotel. The gorgeous property sits in the heart of South Kensington and comprises four traditional Victorian townhouses, subtly merged into one grand hotel.

The Kensington, part of the Doyle Collection, recently underwent an extensive renovation – and the results speak for themselves. A few patrons dot the plush chairs off the lobby, which, feels like the drawing room of a family manor. A pair of women, perhaps mother and daughter, giggle over the tiers of delicacies that make up The Kensington’s afternoon tea, and the décor blends muted hues of ash grey and teal with bursts of colour that complement the hotel’s period architecture. I’m booked in to the new Knightsbridge Suite, a generously proportioned, light-filled space with exquisite original artworks and a well-matched blend of antique furniture and contemporary designed pieces. Through the lounge, with its fireplace and floorto-ceiling French windows, is the plush bedroom and I’m immediately drawn to the circular daybed occupying a corner of the room. It’s tempting to snuggle up here for the afternoon, or perhaps make use of the lush marble bathroom, replete with its own television if the whirlpool bath is not enough entertainment, but Kensington is calling. Home to the monarchy at Kensington Palace since 1689, and the official Royal Borough since 1901, Kensington has built-in appeal. Throw in some of the UK’s most venerable museums – The Victoria and Albert, Natural History and Science Museums – and Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, plus a plethora of one-off boutiques and a buzzing café culture, and it’s easy to understand the popularity of the locale. My exploration starts with a stroll by the Natural History Museum, where children dash past their parents to enter the space, in an endearing display of enthusiasm. Within moments, I’m in the peaceful environs of Kensington Gardens as I make my ➤➤ way to the Serpentine, where rowers skim across the water in lazy loops.

My next stop is the V&A, which is partnered with the Kensington Hotel and is a short stroll away. I’m keen to take in the Botticelli Reimagined exhibition, the largest Botticelli exhibition in Britain since 1930. Running until early July, it explores the way artists and designers have reinterpreted the Renaissance artist’s work. I could spend days dipping in and out of the exhibitions on offer, and I probably will. Flagging in the late afternoon, I debate between a cupcake from the Hummingbird Café or a coffee at La Bottega. It’s tempting to indulge in both, but by in act of willpower, I settle for the authentic Italian deli-style café bar, purely based on proximity and the delicious aroma of caffeine wafting through the open door. Revived, I stroll back to The Kensington. My friend Katy is joining me at the hotel’s Town House, situated in the interconnected drawing rooms on the ground floor. The conversion of these three spaces was overseen by Alexander Waterworth Interiors, and they’ve created a cosy ambience, without any pretence. The menu, developed by Executive Chef Steve Gibbs is the cuisine equivalent, featuring a selection of seasonal, locally-sourced dishes. For starters, we share deliciously crispy pig’s cheeks, served with mustard crème fraiche and a smooth apple and raisin chutney, which lends the smoky pork flavour a hint of sweetness. We also dive into a plate of lightly seared tuna, the soy and ginger dressing and pickled radishes giving a nod to oriental influences. Katy opts for whole sea bass for her main, the delicate flesh paired with samphire and a lemon dressing. I’m in heaven with the roast breast of Gressingham duck, served with asparagus, peas, confit shallot and orange sauce. It’s everything duck should be – rich and fragrant, yet velvety smooth, every mouthful a delight. We finish off with a generous serving of warm apple pie served with cinnamon ice-cream, the perfect finale. Post-dinner, we slip into K Bar, also newly renovated, with leather wingback chairs, teal and violet velvet sofas and tartan accents, not to mention an extensive cocktail menu expertly crafted by award-winning bartender Ben Manchester. We perch at the bar and sample immaculately presented concoctions such as the Aviation, with No 3 Gin, Luxardo Maraschino, Bitter Truth Violet Liqueur and lemon juice, and Georgia Mint Juleps served in chilled brass mugs. Every cocktail is a work of art, framed with flowers and fruit. No visit to this area is complete without browsing in Harrods and window shopping along King’s Road. That’s what tomorrow is for. Bright and beautiful Interior design should reflect the owner’s lifestyle, whether they jet-set across the globe or work from home. Lisa Preece talks to Morph Designs to see how they turned one client’s love of travel into a bright, beautiful design.

W

orking across properties ranging from country homes to city apartments, offices and boutique hotels, Morph Designs has experience in creating stunning designs throughout London and Essex. Head Designer Samantha Morphew set up the consultancy in 2013, after more than 10 years’ experience in the interior design industry, including a degree from Central St Martins University of Art & Design. Morph Designs has the passion, experience and creativity to deliver a perfect home.

Recently, the interior-design consultancy was approached by a professional couple who wanted to bring the luxury of a boutique hotel into their home. After a consultation, it became clear that they wanted their love of travel reflected in the property, paired with vibrant colours. The result is an interior with a luxurious ethnic vibe and pops of colour. Armed with bright ideas, the sitting room was turned from a neutral space into a relaxing room with different blocks of ➤➤

colour. Samantha says: “We like to add colour blocks to a lot of our projects as it gives the client the flexibility to change it in the future. We chose teal to paint one wall, while the others remained neutral. The other colours in the room match the teal, creating a sense of flow throughout the house. The beautiful combination of the sunshine yellow and midnight blue creates richness. The use of texture through the sequined cushion created the luxuriousness that the client was looking for. The mirror was added as it is reminiscent of Moroccan latticework, bringing in our client’s love of travel.” The designers were also able to rejuvenate a large room with a beautiful bay window. It was the perfect entertaining space, so they used glamorous accessories with a touch of sparkle. “Our client fell in love with the silk peacock fabric, so we picked out the colours in the feathers to design the room,” explains Samantha. “This room definitely has a hotel vibe to it, with bespoke curtains and a hint of sparkles.

Using fabrics such as velvet, silk and sequins really helped us to achieve the hotel boutique appearance, and with a bit of colour popping through the use of blue, it meant the client was extremely happy with the final look.” In the hallway, Morph Designs gave a sideboard a feminine touch with some bright hues. “It was great fun being able to use pinks and purples in this room, and it shows that you can use these colours without it being too feminine,” says Samantha. “Accessories are really the key to creating a designer look,” Samantha confides. “Using a fabulous ethnic fabric, we created a bespoke shade and combined it with varying shades of purple and some pink to add depth and character to the room.
