> On top of the world The remote hillside village of Thangpalkot1 in the Sindhupalchok district of Nepal has been fully reconstructed in a joint venture by The Fine & Country Foundation and Campbells Foundation. To celebrate the triumphant moment, a team ventured to the summit of Mount Everest to surprise supporters with an iconic flag. On 25 April 2015, Nepal was struck by a devastating earthquake. More than 100 people were killed, thousands were injured, and millions lost their homes. Campbells Foundation began supporting the village shortly after the disaster, with The Fine & Country Foundation partnering in February 2017. Ever since, numerous fundraisers have taken place as the Fine & Country network, Campbells Foundation and members of the public strived to help this vibrant village. Four years after the catastrophic earthquake, 63 houses were constructed for the villagers of Thangpalkot1 and in May 2019, we were delighted to announce all the houses in Thangpalkot1 were funded. To celebrate the end of an era, Renzen Dorzey Bomzan, the Village Coordinator, arranged for a group of Sherpas to trek to the summit of Mount Everest with a customised flag thanking everyone who helped rebuild Thangpalkot1. > Algarve sets its sights on new markets Fine & Country Algarve has been busy diversifying its marketing. The Algarve region has traditionally collaborated with the UK market and this is still the case for many agents; however, since Fine & Country Algarve launched in 2013, the company has sold to buyers from 21 different countries, with the UK last year making up just 24% of the market. “Our three offices across the Algarve all have staff speaking at least four different languages,” said Managing Partner Zoie Hawker. The latest new market to be tapped into is Russia. “We made a few sales to Russian buyers last year and have seen more enquiries over recent months,” said Zoie. As part of the new marketing drive, Fine & Country Algarve has already booked a stand at Moscow’s Premier International Real Estate Show (MPIRES), taking place on 4-5 October. I

t is the day after Madrid has sweltered in the first heatwave of the summer. Despite being told I was lucky I hadn’t arrived the previous day, it’s still a warm evening. I’m delighted when I enter the refreshingly cool reception area of The Pavilions, my home for the next few days. My room on the seventh floor of this lovely boutique hotel is a haven of relaxation. The cool blue hues of the walls, which feature bookshelves sporting a variety of art books, are a far cry from the bustling streets of the city. My generous balcony is perfect for an early morning coffee or an evening aperitif and information about the hotel is supplied through the “Suite Pads”, which act as a directory and digital concierge. There is no need to order a newspaper – it is at my fingertips. This clever use of technology supports, rather than replaces, personal interaction with the staff. With 28 rooms, the hotel places great store on personalising the service for each guest. I experience the service culture when I ask where I can find a light evening meal. I’m directed a block away to Bar Tomate, where the fresh Mediterranean-style dishes are perfect for my needs. Dining alone allows time to observe more closely the operations of the establishment and I’m intrigued by how quickly and efficiently the waiting staff move. This is not the laid-back, siesta‑loving Spain I expected. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, I head out for my first day of exploring. The staff have once again drawn on their local knowledge and provided directions and suggestions. It seems the hotel is well located to cater for both business visitors and tourists. I head around the corner and find myself on the Paseo de Recoletos. Directly across the street is a 12-metre sculpture of a head created by artist Jaume Plensa, which dominates the Plaza de Colon. This is part of an innovative programme run by Madrid City Council, where selected artworks are displayed for a year. Continuing down to the Paseo del Prado, I stop to admire the beautiful City of Madrid council building. Later, I learn I could have entered and ascended to the viewing platform for one of the best panoramas of Madrid. The Prado Museum, the revered Spanish national art museum, is nearby and there is already a queue gathering at the entrance when I pass. The gallery houses masterpieces by Velázquez, El Greco, Bosch, Goya and Rubens. I have another destination in mind. Next to the Prado Museum is the botanical gardens. The day is already warming up, so I venture in to partake of the shade and peace of this green space. Popping back out some time later, I find the main railway station at the end of the avenue. Another garden awaits here – arrivals to Madrid are greeted by a tropical garden in the vestibule. The station’s metal and glass structure covering the platforms made this space ideal for use as a greenhouse. It once housed ponds as well; however these are gone as they became a dumping ground for unwanted terrapins and turtles. They regularly contained around 300 turtles

and it became impossible for the station staff to care for them. The garden, though, is still filled with several thousand plants, including 260 different species from America, Asia and Australia. Opposite the railway station is the Museo Reina Sofia, where I learn an important lesson – always research your destination. The museum is not open during my stay. This leaves me enough time for a short visit to Retiro Park. It would be easy to spend a full day in this 125-hectare oasis in the heart of the city. The highlights include a large artificial lake, an extensive collection of sculptures and fountains, and the Glass Palace, an amazing example of cast-iron architecture. I have been advised by a friend to follow the local tradition and eat a main meal in the middle of the day before taking an afternoon siesta, thereby avoiding the discomfort of the midday heat. This certainly makes sense and I emerge post-nap along with the rest of the population to wander further and enjoy the tapas culture. Madrid is a city of museums and galleries with an established food culture and a market for every passion. For food lovers wanting to sample modern cuisine based on traditional tastes, a visit to the Mercado de San Miguel is essential. It is the only market left in Madrid housed in its original iron structure. The oldest street market in the city is El Rastro, which is open on Sundays, but be prepared for the hustle and bustle of crowds in search of a bargain at this popular flea market. The former slaughter house, El Matadero, is much calmer, now a centre for arts that also hosts a design market for entrepreneurs.

One of the most popular tourist draw cards is the Royal Palace. It is still the official residence of the royal family, but its use is now restricted to state ceremonies. Just walking around the outside of this building confirms its majesty. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is a wonderful example of Baroque architecture. A visit to the interior of the palace provides a walk through the history of Madrid. I opt instead for time in the gardens. A lesser-known gem in this city of museums is the Museum of History of Madrid, owned by the City Council. The permanent collection covers the history of Madrid from 1561 to the beginning of the 20th-century, and it is supplemented by artwork on loan from the Prado Museum. It fills in the gaps of my understanding of the development of the city. Madrid is a fascinating city, and one that is worthy of exploration. During my short visit, I have barely scratched the surface, but I have discovered a metropolis that balances green spaces and city sights and has something of interest around every corner. n

E

ntering through the stone and wrought-iron gates of Terre Blanche, it is clear that this is a special place. Curated gardens border the pathways with clumps of Russian sage replacing lavender, but maintaining the colours of Provence. Like the gardens, the reception area of the hotel uses the Provençal colour palette, reflecting the butter and ochre hues found in the local stone – much of the white stone used throughout the buildings has been carved from the local quarries. The hotel is comprised of 115 deluxe suites and villas mirroring the same colours, with local red clay used to create terra cotta accents. Each habitation is strategically placed to ensure privacy, with extensive balconies overlooking gardens and natural patches of meadow plants. It is designed to reflect the style of the five villages of the Haut-Var that it faces. The surprising aspect is that this is all part of the grand plan of one man. Originally a private estate, Terre Blanche was bought by Sean Connery and then briefly owned by a Swedish retirement company. Plans were in place to develop it as a residential villa estate. The location, nestled between the coast and the mountain villages, and its proximity to Nice airport and the Côte d’Azur, make it an attractive property for such a development. When Dietmar Hopp, an avid golfer, acquired the estate, no development had been undertaken and he reimagined the project. The number of proposed privately owned villas was dramatically reduced. He saw the resort as part of the local environment and recognised the value of maintaining the integrity of its physical and cultural setting. His awareness of the impact on the environment was, and has remained, a central tenet in the development.

This vision incorporated preparation for the future. There are small touches, such as the earth removed from one area of land being used to fill another space. Larger elements – with much foresight – include the development of tunnels beneath the roads that link the structures, providing access to electrical and plumbing systems as well as allowing for future technology developments to be incorporated without environmental impact. The water filtration system is in place with room for expansion with new developments and gardens having been planted with a selection of plants adapted to the environment and an ecological watering system. For golfers, hotel guests and residents, the seamless operation of the resort offers a peaceful, safe environment. Making this work requires a veritable army of people behind the scenes. There are approximately 450 staff members employed here during the summer season. There are four restaurants that provide a range of dining experiences – and a specialised bread oven produces 17 different types of bread for consumption at these eateries. La Faventia specialises in fine dining with contemporary French cuisine in elegant surroundings. Le Gaudina is more informal, with a terrace that makes the most of the sweeping vista of the valley below. Here, diners enjoy the typical Provençal flavours of the region. Le Tousco is conveniently placed next to the infinity pool and offers a light buffet that can also be enjoyed privately in one of the 31 poolside cabanas. Golfers and hotel guests who want views of the golf course can dine in the comfort of the clubhouse at Les Caroubiers. Two championship golf courses, Le Château and Le Riou, encircle the resort. The latter is for the exclusive use of club members and hotel guests. There are 35 greenkeepers and four maintenance staff who work on the equipment in an extensive air-conditioned workshop. There is plenty for them to do – the mowers are being upgraded to hybrid machines. This is yet another example of how all of the work on the golf course is supported by technology. There are sensors underground that measure the moisture in the soil, making it easy to know how and where water should be used. The waste water from the washing bays is fed into large vats, where it is heated and the vapour is piped back into the air while the solid residue remains, ensuring any harmful chemicals are removed. Not that there are many now, as the resort has changed its use of chemicals as part of the focus on ecological sustainability. A similar process is used for the organic waste from the hotel. Heat is used to reduce the waste to powder form, which can then be used as fertiliser to further improve the soil.

The area where technology is most clearly on show is the Albatros Golf Performance Centre. This year, the centre launched the Terre Blanche Golf Academy, offering a series of programmes including intensive training for amateurs and professionals alike. The courses combine biomechanical analysis with physical and mental coaching. Staff have the skills to work with a wide range of clients, including professionals, amateurs and children. Unique to Terre Blanche, the Biomecaswing technology customises programmes based on kinetic analysis and a physical assessment of a player’s balance. With such facilities, combined with the hotel staff accommodation that is only used during the summer season, it is an obvious choice to host an intensive live-in training course for the French junior team. Despite the pro-golfer facilities, the resort is run with families in mind. There is a kids club, taking on some of the onus of entertaining children and a special children’s menu is available, with a nutritionist employed to ensure a healthy diet is maintained. For art aficionados, the walls are a gallery for Hopp to share his extensive private art collection. Sculptural work is positioned in the gardens, enhancing each area. At the entrance to the award-winning spa, the magnificent piece by Tamara Kvesitadze, Man and Woman, is a moving work that melts two bodies into one, to mesmerising effect. At each turn, Terre Blanche takes your breath away. Around every corner there is a new view of the natural setting that exists in harmony with the man-made structures. Neither dominates, evidence that Hopp’s foresight both achieves and preserves the perfect balance. n

A palatial history With regal residents, a one-of-a-kind location, and classification as a monument of public interest, Palmela Palace in Cascais, Portugal, is a property of distinction. Michaela Black explores this stunning mansion.

T

he Palace of Palmela, in Cascais, Portugal, was designed by English architect Thomas Henry Wyatt, but it was heavily influenced by the knowledge, travels and personal taste of the third Duchess of Palmela, D. Maria de Sousa Holstein, the main proponent of this project. Benefiting from a unique location and exquisite surrounding landscapes, Palmela Palace inarguably retains its architectural magnificence. The architect went to Cascais to survey the area before crafting his work, as he perceived the surrounds to be fundamental in the project´s design. By 1872, he delivered 30 drawings, and work on the English neo-Gothic mansion began that year. The result is a beautiful architectural piece, set in 3,000 square metres of gardens, standing above the beach, with a swimming pool that “sails” over the Atlantic Ocean. The attention to detail as regards the exterior is expressed in the profusion of windows and terraces and numerous bay windows, making the most of its seafront location. The architectural design is asymmetrical, almost spontaneous, and most certainly fetching. Classified in 2012 as a monument of public interest, this unique mansion is currently home to the family of João de Sousa e Holstein Campilho, the grandson of the fifth Duke of Palmela, Dom Domingos. This was his

family’s summer home, and he has memories of a notable visitor – Antonio Eça de Queirós, son of Eça de Queirós, a famous writer. King Umberto of Italy also lived in the palace while remodelling his villa in Cascais. With a built area of 2,500 square metres, Palmela Palace comprises a ground floor, where the service areas were originally situated, and two further floors, where the noble halls with elaborate ceilings and main rooms are located. There is also a large attic area, once staff quarters. In days gone by, there would be more than 25 permanent staff, thus the entire property has over 40 rooms. The basement was originally designed and built only to be used by staff. It is composed of a room and pantry with an arch covered in stone, plastered and painted ceilings and tiled walls. There is also a living room with a mezzanine, a kitchen, a dining room, three bedrooms with stone floors, and a laundry, also with tiled walls. In addition, there is a superb buried cellar, with underground access, and an independent entrance to this floor, used as a service entrance door. Though the exterior of this unique palace displays the magnificence of the location, it is on arrival at the large entrance hall on the ground floor, through the main solid wood door with antique bronze fittings, that the palace truly comes into its own – picture white and black marble floors and a grand staircase with exotic wood risers. After passing through the large hall, there is a main living room, a piano room, an office, a large dining room, and a chapel with walls covered with 18th‑century hand‑painted tiles, amongst other spaces. Most of these rooms feature superb ocean views over

the bay of Cascais. The ground floor also affords access to an interior area with a garden, a swimming pool and changing rooms. The first floor is reached via a magnificent staircase from the entrance hall. On this floor, there is a south-facing living room filled with natural light and offering superb ocean views, along with five bedrooms with painted and crafted high ceilings and hardwood flooring. There are also three bathrooms with marble floors and tiled walls. On the second floor, there are eight more bedrooms, all with wood floors. The wooden doors and plinths are painted white. Above the second floor, there is an attic that covers part of the house, with further rooms and storage spaces, with superb ocean views. These were originally the staff living quarters. This home was built to inspire and it promises an outstanding lifestyle in Cascais. Once a fishing village, Cascais now offers much more, from restaurants including some with Michelin stars, to the numerous beaches, the ten nearby golf courses, health clubs, tennis clubs, a marina, riding centres, international schools, and top-quality hotels. With its marina and long beach promenade to Estoril, its mild climate and beachfront lifestyle, it is often referred to as the Riviera of Portugal. Here are our team’s top five tips to turn your entrances into spaces that reflect the ambience in your property. Fresh air We always incorporate a diffuser into an entrance hallway, as it provides a welcoming scent when you arrive home. Reflect style Mirrors are ideal for hallways as they help broaden narrow corridors while proving practical for a last‑minute make-up touch-up or tie-straightening moment on your way out the door. Smaller mirrors are best positioned over a console table, while larger, floor‑length mirrors are great for more expansive spaces. Wallpaper We love incorporating wallpaper into a hallway design to add texture, colour or pattern to the room. If you have a dado rail, you have the flexibility of papering half the wall and can be bolder with the pattern.
