> Sanjay’s 500km Challenge for The Fine & Country Foundation Sanjay Gandhi has held the licence for Fine & Country York for 18 months and in that time has done an outstanding amount of fundraising for a variety of causes. Since the world went into lockdown, Sanjay has been on a personal journey that has led him to this particular challenge of walking 500km. After contracting coronavirus in March, being bedridden for almost the entire month and ending up in hospital care twice, things were put into perspective for Sanjay and he became determined to recover physically, as well as mentally. Starting out by walking a small distance each day, he was soon at the 600km mark and decided that this personal challenge could also benefit those less fortunate. As of 14 September, Sanjay started his mission of walking 500km with the aim of completing this in roughly three months. Two weeks in and Sanjay’s £1,000 target has already been surpassed, with astounding support from his colleagues and friends across the world. Honfleur, Normandy Ports don’t come any prettier than Honfleur on the Seine estuary in Normandy. Colourful half-timbered houses rub shoulders on the quays, mingling with art galleries and restaurants. It’s so enchanting, it’s easy to forget it was originally built for trade. Before the French Revolution, shipowners made their fortune from trading. Samuel de Champlain, one of several famous explorers associated with the port, headed off from here to found the Canadian city of Quebec. That’s not Honfleur’s only claim to fame. It also attracted famous painters, including impressionist Claude Monet, with the light in this coastal town proving beautiful throughout the year. Claude Monet’s mentor Eugène Boudin was born here, so that probably helped, too. This historic gem is particularly popular in summer with Parisian day-trippers. For winter visitors, there’s more of the town to go around. Stroll along the picturesque old harbour and take in the windswept coast before warming up in one of the old town’s superb restaurants. Marseille, Provence Marseille is France’s second-largest city by population and it has a certain cosmopolitan flair. It has been heavily influenced by the traders and immigrants who have passed through its ports. Standing at the harbour, you can almost feel Africa, which has a significant presence here in the scent of the spices at the market, the street food and the call to prayer from the mosques. There is a lot of history to take in – from the Musée des Docks Romains, the site of an old Roman shipping warehouse, to Château d’If, an island fortress in the Bay of Marseille and the setting for The Count of Monte Cristo. In the centre of the city, overlooking the bay, is Notre Dame de la Garde, a grand Roman Catholic cathedral known for its golden nave and decorative mosaics. Newer sights include a host of world-class museums and art galleries, most notably the Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée. If nothing else though, visit Marseille for the food, which sees North African cuisine served with a French twist. The city is the home of bouillabaisse, with the soup served broth first, then the fish, filleted table-side.

Saint-Malo, Brittany The walled city of St Malo, built in the 12th century, offers breathtaking views across the sea, even when the waters are icy cold in winter. This citadel city was founded by Celtic tribes and fortified by Romans. Later, in the 6th century, monks established a large monastery here. It is perhaps the city’s sailor merchants who had the most influence on St Malo’s character. The corsairs of the 17th/18th centuries acted as official pirates, granted official licence by the king of France to go “coursing” after enemy vessels, in return for a percentage of the profit from captured ships. Like Honfleur, St Malo has a Canadian connection – Jacques Cartier, one of St Malo’s most famous sailors, is credited with the discovery of Canada. Walking through the cobbled streets of St Malo’s old town, you may not see pirates these days, but you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time. St Malo feels authentic, but in fact, it was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, taking 30 years of painstaking reconstruction to return it to its former glory. ➤➤

Annecy, French Alps Tucked away in southeastern France, this beautiful Alpine town, where Lake Annecy feeds into the Thiou River, is stunning year-round. Think medieval buildings, cobbled streets and quaint canals and bridges in an undeniably scenic setting on the northern shoreline of Lake Annecy. Annecy is known for its old town, where pastel-coloured houses frame the winding canals. The most photographed building in Annecy, however, is the Palais de l’Îsle, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Its bowed shape and river location draw comparisons with the pointed prow of a boat. Overlooking the city, the medieval Château d’Annecy, once home to the Counts of Geneva, is now a museum, although it retains its fairy-tale grandeur. In a more romantic story, lovers flock to Pont des Amours – lovers’ bridge – as legend says those who share a kiss here will remain together for life. The bridge is worth visiting even for the less romantically inclined, for its views of the lake and the mountains. It is Lake Annecy, after all, that steals much of the attention, with its crystal-clear water and stunning scenery. Colmar, Alsace Picturesque half-timbered houses, romantic canals, flower-laden windowsills, and a labyrinth of cobblestone lanes make Colmar one of the quaintest cities in the Alsace. Colmar was apparently the inspiration for the village in the Disney film Beauty and the Beast and it’s not hard to understand why. This small town in northeast France is a real gem. It’s where France meets Germany and the history stamped on Colmar by the two cultures has created a rather unique atmosphere. The Germanic influence can be seen in some of Colmar’s beautiful architecture. This is a demonstration of beauty that transcends seasons – it’s the kind of place where strolling is the main attraction. There’s enjoyment in settling in at one of the waterside cafés or popping into a cellar restaurant. Peak prettiness is the area near the Quai de la Poissonnerie, otherwise known as Petit Venice, where the half-timbered houses are painted in pastel colours, leaning against each other like drunken friends. It’s important to remember, too, that Alsace is home to the Alsatian 170-kilometre-long wine route, passing through a string of picturesque villages, well-known wine-producing towns and exceptional landscapes. n

uropean Tour Destinations is investing in the next generation of golfers by using its world-class venues and facilities to offer junior programmes. The development of young golfers is not only good for the future of the sport, but also provides a range of valuable life skills for young players. In this age of electronic games, anything that encourages physical activity in the outdoors is a major health benefit for participants. Golf can be played by a diverse range of people of all different ages and physical attributes, so it is an ideal family activity. It is not merely the physical that is developed, either. Mental attributes also come into play. As a sport with a rich history and ingrained etiquette, it encourages individuals to take responsibility for their own play. In Bulgaria, where golf is a relatively new sport, European Tour Destinations property Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort is leading the way and it’s quickly building in popularity. It’s not just senior players that are being catered for here.

The resort organises children’s summer camps that provide an opportunity for younger participants to learn the foundations of golf in a safe and fun-filled environment. The programmes are suitable for children between the ages of 7 and 16 and the number of participants is limited to ten so the programmes can be individualised to cater for beginners, as well as advanced players. The importance of developing junior golfers has been a cornerstone of the offering of Golf Club St Leon-Rot in Germany. Set 20 kilometres south of Heidelberg, it continues to emphasise the development of junior golf. Dietmar Hopp, President of the Golf Club St Leon-Rot, noted that over the last 10 years, the programme has resulted in golf being introduced at a much younger age, which augurs well for the future of golf in Germany. The club takes an innovative approach to the development of talent, which is supported by outstanding facilities. It is a holistic approach, ensuring that not only young players but also coaches are supported to increase their skill level. In addition to the two championship courses offering different characteristics, there is a 9-hole short course and a dedicated children’s course. The Bambini (children’s) course has five holes, with a maximum length of 40 metres. Children up to the age of 14 years have priority. It is strategically placed opposite the clubhouse and can be seen from the club terrace, making it easy for parents to supervise their children in comfort. With the Allianz Golf Arena-Indoor Short Game Centre of Excellence, training can continue all year. The hall is heated in winter so golfers are able to train in crucial short-game techniques. The size of the venue, 1,700 square metres, allows for long chips with ten tee spots for long shots. It is not surprising that Terre Blanche Hotel Spa and Golf Resort, located on one of the most outstanding estates in the south of France, is also a leader in developing junior golf. The resort sports the unique Albatros Golf Performance Centre, the only European Tour Performance Institute certified in Europe. The centre is now host to the Terre Blanche Golf Academy, which launched on 1 January 2019. The academy offers a series of curated programmes including golf lessons, training courses (2-5 days) and intensive training (4 or 10 weeks). Each course is designed
