lancing around the pedestrians on the streets of Milan, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d unwittingly stumbled into a fashion show. Looking good in Italy’s catwalk city appears to be compulsory. Milan has gone through a wave of rejuvenation since hosting the World Expo in 2015, with many of the impressive old structures being repurposed into bars, shops, restaurants and cultural centres. There’s more to Milan than fashion and shopping though. Many of the city’s highlights are those that have been in existence for quite some time.

Milan’s magnificent Gothic cathedral, the Duomo, is the third largest church in Europe, dominating the Piazza del Duomo in the heart of the city. Streets either radiate from the Duomo or circle it, highlighting the Duomo’s importance. More than five hundred years in the making, the enormous white marble façade alone is evidence of why tourists continue to flock here. The 135 spires can be viewed up close on the roof for an additional fee, and the cathedral contains 3,500 statues. Perhaps the most striking is Saint Bartholomew Flayed (1562), by Marco d’Agrate, with the saint wearing his flayed skin over his shoulders like a stole. It’s somewhat macabre, yet hauntingly beautiful in its flowing lines. Glance upwards into the dome above the apse and a small red light bulb marks the spot where one of the nails reputedly from the Crucifixion of Christ has been placed. You also can’t miss the five-manual, 225-rank pipe-organ, currently the largest organ in Italy. Within walking distance of the Duomo, along the pedestrian shopping avenue of the Via Dante, is the Renaissance Castello Sforzesco, once the home of the Sforzesco family who ruled Milan. It now holds a collection of museums, but the real reason to go is to view the Rondanini Pietà, a marble sculpture that Michelangelo worked on from 1552 until the last days of his life in 1564. Never to be finished, the figure of Mary holding up Christ is striking in its simple beauty. When it’s time for some fresh air, backing on to Castello Sforzesco is Sempione Park, designed by architect Emilio Alemagna, who wanted this green space to frame panoramic views of the stately castle. Aside from being a pleasant place for a stroll, the park is home to a small, outdoor, modern sculpture gallery. Naturally, no visit to Milan is complete without a visit to its most famous artwork – The Last Supper. Leonardo da Vinci’s 15-foot by 29-foot painting of Jesus’ last meal with his apostles is located in the refectory of the monastery next to the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, not far from the city centre. Book tickets in advance, though – they sell out and can’t be bought on the day – and be aware that you’ll only have 15 minutes to take in all of the grandeur of the work. ➤➤ Top: Navigli Grande, Milan. For something a little more of the beaten path, head to the charming Navigli district. Venice isn’t the only Italian city to boast canals – the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese canals in this neighbourhood were part of a network of waterways constructed to transport goods from the nearby lakes, including marble from Candoglia, which was used to construct the Duomo. Legend has it that Da Vinci helped plan the renovation of the canals, which may explain why it’s such a popular area for art galleries and temporary exhibitions. Navigli is also a popular night spot, with a glut of bars and trattorias drawing in the hipsters, as well as a regular programme of events in the warmer months. After all that art and culture, it may be time for some retail therapy. Via Monte Napoleone is the shopping aficionados’ destination of choice. Set within Milan’s ‘rectangle of fashion’, it is home to Gucci’s flagship store, along with Roberto Cavalli, D&G, Prada, Valentino and Versace and Giorgio Armani. In the words of Bo Derek, “Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.”

When day turns to night and you’re looking for a bite, Milan will not leave you wanting. Besides the standard pizza and pasta places, the Navigli trattorias dish up delicious risotto alla Milanese, a creamy saffron risotto, or opt for another local favourite, cassoeula, a rich pork and cabbage stew. If you’re craving something completely different, head to Ghe Sem, backed by Gian Marco Senna, one of Milan’s renowned restaurateurs. This funky eatery near the centre in Via Vincenzo Monti serves unique tapas-style dim sum, but with an Italian twist. Our pick is the Fassona beef dumpling with caramelised onions, which takes fusion food to a whole new level. The cocktails and desserts at Ghe Sem are also held in high regard, or you can pop into Sugar Pasticceria a few doors down and pick up a beautifully presented pastry or two. Milan has a little bit of everything: tree-lined streets, historic neighbourhoods, art, parks, buzzing neighbourhoods and beautiful people. It is easily Italy’s most sophisticated city, where after-work drinks are an art form and fashion is a way of life. n

T

he year 2018 is a special one for European golf, as the Ryder Cup returns to the continent. Europe’s top golfers will be aiming to win back the trophy they have won 10 times and it will be only the second Ryder Cup to be held in continental Europe. The previous occasion the Ryder Cup was contested on mainland Europe, it was hosted by Valderrama Golf Club in Spain. In 2018, the honour goes to Le Golf National in France. Le Golf National is in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, a suburb southwest of Paris. Playing host to a major golf tournament is nothing new for this world-class venue, which has successfully staged the Open de France for the past 25 years. While the Open de France is a big tournament, however, nothing compares to the Ryder Cup, the biggest event in world golf. The 2018 Ryder Cup will be played on L’Albatros Course, which has consistently been voted one of the top golf courses in Europe. It is a challenge from start to finish and will feature a visionary stadium design on the final four holes, making it a unique and innovative Ryder Cup venue. Fast greens and undulating fairways are protected by links-style bunkering, making the L’Albatros Course a lovely blend of links and target golf. The final four holes are surrounded by water hazards and this is where much of the drama is expected to unfold during the four days of thrilling golf action. Hosting the biggest golf tournament in the world is not easy and Le Golf National has been hard at work in recent years to ensure the venue is ready to put on a show, both on and off the course. ➤➤

Paul Armitage, General Manager at Le Golf National is proud of the improvements, which have been made over a period of four years. The preparation not only focused on the golf course and facilities, but also on the staff. “We realised we needed to raise the standards of our customer service,” says Armitage. “We created a dedicated department of staff just for that and have invested in everything a travelling golfer needs to enjoy a full experience.” In terms of preparation for the 2018 Ryder Cup, 95% of the work has been completed and L’Albatros Course has been given the seal of approval by the players. In October 2017, Le Golf National staged an event called ‘One Year to Go’, bringing together the captains of both teams for a few days of golf and development work. “Pros on the European Tour generally consider it one of the fairest tests of golf they play all year,” says Armitage. The results of the 2017 Open de France show only two players obtaining a score of nine under par or lower. The European and American players will need to be on form if they are to score low. Building for the Ryder Cup will begin in May 2018, but up until then, L’Albatros Course will remain open to the public. With a four-star Novotel on site, plus Le Pitch Restaurant offering the best in French cuisine, it is the perfect time to visit Le Golf National and play like a pro.

Skyscraping design With panoramic views stretching up above Dubai’s skyline, this newly constructed skyscraper has a 15,000 sq.ft. penthouse. Fine & Country Interior Design firm Studio Kamini were able to flex their design prowess when they created the interior scheme. Defining the brief Used to designing properties that are listed, or over a hundred years old, the skyscraper was a challenge for Studio Kamini. “The main challenge was to take this shell and inject some soul into what was, at that moment, nothing more than four walls and a great view,” explains Kamini Ezralow, Director of Studio Kamini. The firm started by researching the history of skyscrapers, which led them to New York in the 1920s and the Art Deco movement, an era of architecture also favoured by the client. This became the perfect synthesis between the understated elegance of the era and timeless design, which was to play such a significant role in the design of the home. Incorporating the design style The Art Deco era was synonymous with the glamour and exuberance of the 1920s and 30s in Paris and New York, and incorporating this spirit into the property was key. The most striking design motif is the floor-to-ceiling mirror, which engulfs the main wall in the drawing room. Studio Kamini used a bespoke technique called Verre Eglomisé – a method of gilding, etching and painting the backs of mirrors that dates back to the 18th Century, where each design is unique. This wall depicts Art Deco elements in a subtle yet effective way through both the mirror design and the triple-height architrave around the entrance.

Working with the space The property is large in scale, with several double-height ceilings. “With any space that has double-height ceilings, it is vital to make the experience of using the room intimate and welcoming,” explains Kamini. To achieve this, Studio Kamini created intimate entertaining and living zones so that one family member can sit quietly with a book in one corner while another entertains guests further down the room.
