Seller Insight

Located close to the heart of the charming Kentish village of Otford is Hillside, an extremely attractive four-bedroom detached family home that also boasts a large garden and a one-bedroom self-contained annex.

“Location was definitely a major factor when we bought the property twenty years ago,” says the owner. “Otford is a gorgeous village with a fantastic sense of community, and our house is quite literally a stone’s throw from St Michael’s School, which all three of our boys attended. We’re also just down the road from the station – which has been ideal for my husband who has to commute into London as it’s a journey that only takes around forty minutes – and in the village itself there’s an array of shops, quaint little tea rooms and a couple of cosy pubs.”

“The house itself was built in the 1920s and when we bought it it was in need of total renovation, so over time we’ve done absolutely everything and to a really high standard. We extended out to the front, rejigged the layout to make better use of the space, refurbished the kitchen and bathrooms, and every single room has been redecorated. It’s now a fabulous family home. Really spacious and bright, and it’s a great house, and indeed garden, for big get-togethers with friends and family – of which we’ve had plenty!”

“Another feature that initially drew us to the property was the huge south-facing garden, which has also undergone quite the transformation. We’ve added a couple of patio areas, a huge koi pond, a play area for the children and lots of seating areas. I’d describe it as a very family-friendly space and it’s also been fantastic for summer entertaining as there’s more than enough room for a huge marquee.”

“It’s hard to pick just one. I love them all. The conservatory is gorgeous in the summer, the kitchen is brilliant for everyday family life and entertaining, the children love the playroom at the front, and my dressing room is a space that makes me very happy. As I said, it’s really hard to choose.”

“We moved to Otford from London and it’s the best move we ever made. It’s such a friendly village, there’s a real sense of community here, and it’s been a wonderful place to bring up our three boys.”

“We had the annex refurbished some years ago, really as a bit of spill over accommodation for visiting family and friends. However, more recently we’ve been renting it out and it’s been really popular so it’s a great little side business.”

“We’re definitely staying in the village, there’s nowhere else we rather live, but we’re moving on to another project,” says the owner. “There’s so much we’ll miss about Hillside. We’ve transformed it into a stunning family home, but I’d say it will be the garden that I’ll miss most. When I sit out there I literally feel as if I’m miles from anywhere.”*
