About the Find Maroondah By Warren Strybosch
The Find Maroondah is a community paper that aims to support all things Maroondah. We want to provide a place where all Not-For-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-andcoming events in the Find Maroondah for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.
We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local business owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you.

ALL THINGS MAROONDAH The City of Maroondah is a local government area in Victoria, Australia in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Maroondah had a population of approximately 118,000 as at the 2019 Report which includes 9000 business and close to 46,000 households. The City of Maroondah was created through the amalgation the former Cities of Ringwood and Croydon in December 1994.

Chart of Accounts: Where Bookkeeping Begins BOOKKEEPING By Jodie Moore The Chart of Accounts is the foundation of your bookkeeping system. When starting a business, one of your first tasks should be setting this up. It is a structured list of all the accounts used to categorise your financial transactions for entry into the general ledger. Think of it as a financial map, organising transactions into five main categories: assets, liabilities, equity, income, and expenses. Each category is further divided into specific accounts. For example: • Assets might include Cash at Bank, Accounts Receivable (Debtors), and Inventory. • Income could include Sales, Service Fees, and Interest Received. • Liabilities might feature Mortgage, Accounts Payable (Creditors), and GST Collected. • Expenses may include Wages, Marketing, Electricity, and Rent. • Equity typically includes Capital and Drawings. Each account is assigned a number and a short description. A bookkeeper can guide you through setting this up correctly
and tailoring it to your business needs. Once your Chart of Accounts is established, it rarely needs major changes—only occasional additions as your business evolves (e.g., a new subscription or creditor). Every transaction you make should be backed by a source document—such as an invoice, receipt, cheque butt, or credit note. In many cases, especially with delayed payments, multiple source documents may be involved (e.g., an invoice and a subsequent receipt). These are essential, particularly if you use the Accrual accounting method, which we’ll cover in more detail in a future article.
When you give your source documents and bank statements to your bookkeeper, they’ll match each transaction to an appropriate account. If you’re using accounting software like Xero, this process becomes much faster and more cost-effective. While there is a monthly fee for the software, it’s usually taxdeductible and can significantly reduce bookkeeping and accounting time—and costs. Once your transactions are properly categorised using the Chart of Accounts, your bookkeeper will enter them into your General Journal and General Ledger, laying the groundwork for accurate financial reporting.

The State Government changes to Res Code. NATURE & CONSERVATION By Liz Sanzaro
Res Code, is the Government’s blue print for how residences are to be built. There are many features of this, including how many dwellings to a site and the size of each of the units’ Private Open Space (POS) (their back yard). Recently, Councils were afforded the opportunity to respond to how Res code 2, might affect their municipality. The State government is determined to fix the housing shortage by ensuring new dwellings are built within existing areas, to help prevent the urban sprawl as Melbourne absorbs what used to be country fringes. One way is to build up, and Council has accepted that around minor activity centres like the Railway Stations of Heathmont, Ringwood East, and Croydon.
As demonstrated in these diagrams, the rear setback has been changed to just 1 meter, not allowing space for planting of anything of significant size. Also, the front unit, will be allowed to use the front setback as their POS, meaning that to give them privacy they will require a high fence. This will inevitably change the street scape to be no longer a garden to walk past and enjoy, but a fenced off feel from the street, and potentially a surface for graffiti. Any large street tree, may well shade the POS of unit one, which may result in removal, since depending on orientation might never get sunlight with a large tree in the way. There is about 50% reduction in available space for serious tree planting, unless it is a pencil pine or similar tree that has no spread. The consequences are loss of shade meaning less comfort in hot days without using air-conditioning and the inevitable heat sink from all the hardstanding materials, like paving, roofs and even the foot path. Maroondah Council has responded to the planned changes pointing out that within MCC’s own planning scheme there are conditions that protect the environment from some of these issues, not to mention street parking if any of the units have visitors or more than two cars. Croydon Conservation Society is supportive of Councils position to densify where it is best afforded and to use our own planning scheme to ensure a better quality of life for all. Mini heat sinks across the municipality will be cumulative and detrimental to our outdoor enjoyment in hot weather, we do not want a future where we need to use personal umbrellas to stay out of direct sunlight. Neither do we want to see a reduction in our canopy tree cover. The words LEAFY & GREEN are embedded within Councils strategic statement and the one thing most commonly appreciated by the community.
All locations within a certain radius can be up to four storeys high. Elsewhere however, the newly proposed design for developers to use, has been maximised to the detriment of neighbourhood character (which will in essence no longer be applicable in Maroondah). The changes could well be responsible for a decline in keeping our mature trees for which Maroondah is known. Currently a five-metre buffer on the rear boundary, to provide for on-site planting is the standard, but this is to be cut back to just one meter. There is also a requirement for a 9 metre front boundary setback, which is also cut back to 6 metres. Circles indicate opportunity for retention of existing trees and or replacement of trees to grow to sufficient height to allow for shade and ambience. Every dwelling is to have Private Open Space.
These changes are the most drastic seen in the last 30 years, with residents having no right of objection or consultation. Canopy trees are set to decline as this new standard is applied, and areas will have their amenity impacted severely. The new amendments snuck into place on March 31st with no ability for local government to object.

Warranwood Primary School hopped into Easter
During the last week of Term 1, Warranwood Primary school enjoyed all things Easter. From the artwork and writing pieces that were hung up in classroom to the wafts of hot cross buns coming from the canteen on Hot Cross Bun Day. Easter had certainly arrived. The students couldn’t wait for their annual visit with the famous Bunny and there was chatter in the yard about the Easter themed dress up day. On Wednesday 2nd April students and staff had a visit from the Easter Bunny. Our furry friend was escorted through the classrooms by one of our Friends of Warranwood volunteers. FOW volunteers take this opportunity to invite the Easter Bunny to visit students and staff as a thank you to the community for their ongoing support. Being able to have our special guest join in on the fun of handing out delicious chocolate eggs is really rewarding. Students welcomed the Easter bunny into each classroom with smiles and excited laughter. There were even requests for selfies with our famous visitor. Completed the week with an afternoon assembly on Friday the 4th of April. The excitement in the courtyard was contagious as our principal, Shane Harrop, built suspense throughout the raffle draw. The audience was hooked on every word trying to work out from the clues who the prize winner would be. Students were so eggscited they literally hopped, jumped and squealed with happiness when their name was called. The community took great delight in witnessing how excited the prize winners were. The joy of such happiness was infectious. We were very fortunate the Easter Bunny was able to reschedule a few things with their busy schedule to come back and surprise us with an extra visit this year.

Australia’s Payroll Landscape
•
Recently we had an inquiry from a sole 2. director asking us about putting his partner on the books. As this is a common question for sole directors when their businesses are starting to grow, we felt we should cover the topic of payroll and what to consider when employing a family member this month. Let’s begin with payroll. The payroll landscape in Australia is undergoing significant changes driven by regulatory updates, digital transformation, and a growing emphasis on transparency and compliance. These shifts are making it increasingly important for businesses— particularly small to medium enterprises (SMEs)—to adopt online accounting software to manage their payroll 3. obligations efficiently and lawfully. It really surprises us when we come across sole directors who are not abreast of these changes, have not set up payroll, and are continuing to just draw out funds from the company as though they are operating as a sole trader. When we meet these clients for the first time, we begin the journey of educating the client regarding these new changes and help them to set up payroll. So, what are these changes: Key Changes Impacting Payroll in Australia 1.
Superannuation Law Reform – “Pay Day Super”: One of the most notable upcoming changes is the requirement for employers to pay employees’ superannuation contributions at the same time as wages, rather than quarterly. This change, known as Pay Day Super, is set to take effect from 1 July 2026. It aims to ensure workers receive their super entitlements promptly, which will significantly improve retirement outcomes and reduce lost super. For businesses, this change increases the need for streamlined, automated payroll systems to avoid compliance breaches and penalties.
Single Touch Payroll (STP) and Online Reporting: The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) mandates that employers use Single Touch Payroll (STP) to report salaries, wages, PAYG withholding, and superannuation data each time they pay employees. STP Phase 2 further expands these reporting requirements. This move toward real-time online reporting enhances data accuracy and helps the ATO detect and reduce payroll fraud and underpayments more effectively. It also increases the accountability of employers, as employees can view their payroll data via their myGov accounts. Increased Transparency and Employee Notification: Employers must now notify both the ATO and employees of payments made, ensuring transparency. Online accounting software helps automate this process, reducing administrative burden and errors. By ensuring employees can see their wage and super payments recorded in real time, businesses are also more likely to maintain trust and retention among their workforce.
Why Online Accounting Software Is Now Essential Given the regulatory complexity and increased compliance requirements, manual payroll processes are no longer practical or sustainable. Online accounting software such as Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks Online, and Reckon offer features that directly support compliance, including: • •
Automated super and payroll processing in line with “pay day super” laws. STP integration for real-time reporting to the ATO.
Employee self-service portals to view payslips and super contributions. Error reduction through automatic tax calculations and award interpretation. Audit trails and reporting tools that improve accountability and reduce fraud.
With the tightening of superannuation laws, expanded STP reporting, and a national focus on payroll transparency, Australian businesses need to move with the times and modernise their payroll systems. Online accounting software is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity for ensuring compliance, reducing risk, and managing payroll efficiently in a changing regulatory environment. If you are a sole director, and you have not set up your payroll, then we encourage you to make this a priority leading up to the new financial year. Hiring your partner or family member. Now we have more insight into the need to have our payroll set up, let’s take time to consider some important facts when putting your partner (spouse or de facto) on as an employee in your business. This can be a beneficial next step in the business, but there are several legal, tax, and compliance issues you must be aware of to avoid penalties or scrutiny from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Fair Work Ombudsman. Here’s what to keep in mind: 1. Genuine Employment Relationship You must be able to prove that your partner is a genuine employee, not just being paid for tax benefits. The ATO may audit your business to ensure: • • •
The work performed is real, regular, and necessary. The pay reflects market rates for the work done. There’s a clear employment agreement or documentation (even if informal).
Tip: Keep time sheets, job descriptions, and examples of work to support this. 2. Fair Work Compliance Just like any other employee, your partner must: • •

Be paid at least the minimum wage for their role. Receive entitlements under the National Employment Standards (NES)—such as annual leave, sick leave, and super. Be covered by the correct Modern Award, if applicable.

Failure to do this can trigger legal action from the Fair Work Ombudsman, even in family-run businesses. Oh, we have seen this happen especially amongst siblings and when there is a relationship breakdown between the owner and their partner. 3. Superannuation Obligations If your partner is earning an income who is over 18 years of age (or if under 18 years of age and working over 30 hours/ week), you are required to: • •
Pay superannuation at the current rate (11.5% in 2025FY, changing to 12% in 2026FY). Soon, you’ll need to pay super at the same time as wages (under the upcoming “pay day super” rules from 1 July 2026).

Withhold PAYG tax from their wages and report it through Single Touch Payroll (STP). Register and pay payroll tax if your total wages exceed the state threshold.
Avoid paying your partner in cash without proper reporting—it’s illegal and risky. 5. Workers Compensation Insurance Even if your partner is a spouse, if they’re a paid employee, they may be eligible for workers compensation. In some states, this depends on: • •

From Noise to Momentum: The One Thing Most Not-for-Profits Overlook in Their Marketing

In the world of not-for-profit marketing, visibility is often treated as the ultimate goal. More views, more clicks, more traffic — all signs of progress, right? I used to believe that too. But after working closely with dozens of incredible organisations, I’ve come to a different conclusion: visibility without clarity is just noise. We’ve seen charities doing all the “right” things. Posting regularly. Running ads. Showing up on every platform. Yet despite their efforts, they weren’t seeing results. Their impact didn’t grow. Donations stayed flat. Engagement was minimal.
Why? Because they hadn’t nailed the one thing that truly makes marketing work: a clear message. Clarity is what turns a social post into a call to action. It’s what transforms a website visit into a donation. It’s the difference between being seen and being remembered. The questions every not-for-profit must answer are simple — but powerful: •
What do you want people to do?

Why should they care?
•
How does your mission align with the change they want to see in the world?
When we helped clients uncover and communicate this clearly, everything shifted.
Campaigns started converting. Donors leaned in. Volunteers showed up. The mission came to life in ways that felt tangible and exciting. This isn’t just theory. It’s the pattern we’ve seen again and again. So if your organisation’s marketing feels like it’s falling flat, don’t immediately assume you need more content or a bigger ad budget. Don’t just chase reach for the sake of reach. Instead, pause. Get clear on your message first. Because clarity is what transforms noise into momentum. And in the not-for-profit world, momentum is what drives real, lasting impact.

If you had a day to yourself, would you spend it in bed? NATUROPATHY By Kathryn Messenger
People often come into my clinic for fatigue, and this is one of the questions I ask, as it tells me some important information. Fatigue can present in so many different ways, and understanding the nature of it, is the start of understanding exactly what is going on in your body. Some people start their day with fatigue, and it improves as the day goes on, others start fine, but can hardly stay awake after lunch, and others get progressively more exhausted as the day goes on. For these people, when It’s bad enough, their ideal day is a day in bed, as they are just too tired to enjoy other activities. Adrenal fatigue If you’re sleeping through the night and getting enough sleep, this is likely to be adrenal fatigue: when you have been stressed or anxious for a long time, and your body has put the breaks on, trying to get you the rest that you need. Often at or even before this point, people turn to caffeine, the easy fix for the fatigue.
This may work for a while, then one of two things happens, either the caffeine stops being effective, or it keeps you awake at night. In both circumstances, you wind up being tired again. Calm the nervous system The first thing to do, is to calm the nervous system. If your body has been pushed for a long time, it’s time to slow down and have some rest. Spending times with friends, creative activities, and exercise can all be really helpful here.

For example, dried fruit on its own will give you a low afterwards, but if you combine it with nuts and seeds, the fats and protein will keep the energy going steadily for longer. Further help If you are absolutely exhausted and your ideal day would be in bed, herbal or nutritional supplements, can make an amazing difference to help you get your energy back, whilst you work on calming your nervous system.
Calming breathing exercises Breathing exercises can also be really helpful, and if you have learnt how to do them, they can be really effective in a moment of stress or anxiety. There are a lot of different techniques for calming breathing, choose one where your exhale is longer than your inhale. Diet So, now that we’ve addressed the nervous system, it’s time to look at your diet. Sugar and refined carbohydrates will give you a sudden energy boost, followed by a

The Music Zone, an intimate listening space crafted by Jordz, layers airy music and offers an escape from the sensory stresses of the world. Finally, the thought-provoking What Remains is an immersive multimedia installation by Emma Lyn-Winkler and Neve Curnow. Merging Victorian 19th century death symbolism, rural gothic, and dark humour, the work transforms the space into a ghostly cemetery that playfully confronts mortality, anxiety, and sexuality.

OFIT of the Month Courses in Practical Philosophy at Central Ringwood Community Centre ‘Real Wisdom does not just cause us to know: it makes us ‘BE’ in a different way.’ Pierre Hadot The School of Practical Philosophy is a centre for spiritual inquiry, practical knowledge and like-minded interaction. It aims to give individuals the opportunity to connect to themselves and others through participating in practical philosophy courses, seminars, and workshops, which are open to people of all ages. The School has branches worldwide, with the Melbourne School of Philosophy offering courses since 1977, and the branch in Croydon since 1990. Previously our meetings were held at Wyreena in Croydon, but since 2023, our meetings have been held at the Central Ringwood Community Centre. We are a not-for-profit, volunteer organisation. Except for a small, administrative staff, all work and tuition in the School is undertaken on an unpaid, voluntary basis. Our introductory course is titled “The Wisdom Within” which introduces new participants to some of the great philosophical teachings from around the globe and allows us to look at life and its meaning. It asks: What holds us back? What sets us free? And, importantly, invites students to see life as a place to test the words of the wise. Are they applicable now, centuries later? Themes explored in the 10-week introductory course include: • • • • • • • •
The nature of wisdom Self-discovery and self-knowledge Different levels of awareness and wakefulness The power of mindfulness and the present moment What it means to live justly The nature of energy and how to best use energy The light of reason & The nature of beauty Finding unity in diversity
The sources for these themes include writings by some of the greatest historical minds; Socrates, Plato, Confucius, Buddha, Jesus, Epicurus, Emerson, Vivekananda as well as contemporary and modern-day authors; in particular Shantananda Saraswati, who was a modern exponent of the philosophy of Unity.
Once enrolled, students join a group of people from diverse backgrounds. A facilitator presents material which is themed and progressive. The guided interactive discussion encourages examples from everyday life to illuminate the concepts proposed. The basic tenet of the course is to ‘neither accept nor reject’ what is proposed, but to practice it in your daily life and observe what happens. Continuation courses are available, and each term gives opportunity for more in-depth study of these important and invaluable topics, always with the emphasis on each person’s personal and direct experience.

The Wisdom Within 10 week introductory course is offered three times a year at a choice of Victorian venues and online. The next course at the Central Ringwood Community Centre will be commencing on Monday June 2. Stephen is a lecturer and consultant in leadership, decision-making, strategy, team development and innovation. He has worked with people of all ages in both professional and personal coaching to help them make better decisions. On this occasion, he will also share many insights gained from his years studying philosophy.

The changing landscape of Retirement Incomes

With the rise of more people retiring than ever before, the government was concerned about retirees underspending in retirement and balancing this with the fear retirees had of running out of money. Whilst the superannuation system had been very effective at accumulating retirement savings, it was not as effective at helping retirees manage and use those savings once they retired. As such the Retirement Income Covenant (RIC) was established. The Retirement Income Covenant is an Australian law introduced on 1 July 2022 that requires superannuation trustees (i.e. super funds) to develop a clear strategy to help their members achieve better retirement outcomes. It’s not a rule directly applied to individuals, but it has significant implications for retirees, particularly in how super funds support retirement planning. What Is the Retirement Income Covenant? The Retirement Income Covenant (RIC) is part of the government’s broader push to ensure superannuation funds: 1. 2. 3.
Help members maximise their retirement income, including both super and Age Pension. Manage the risks of running out of money (longevity risk). Provide flexibility to meet unforeseen expenses or changing personal needs.
Funds must document and publish a retirement strategy, tailored to their member base, and continually improve their support systems for retirees. How Does It Impact Retirees? While the covenant doesn’t mandate individual action, it changes what retirees can expect from their super fund. Here’s how it affects you:
1. Better Retirement Tools and Guidance Super funds are now expected to: • Offer retirement income calculators or models. • Provide retirement projections and help with income planning. Offer more transparent comparisons between account-based pensions and other income options. This gives retirees more informed choices, reducing the chance of poor financial decisions. 2. Access to New Retirement Products Funds are encouraged to create and promote retirement income products that go beyond the basic account-based pension. This may include: • •
Annuities (guaranteed income for life or a fixed term). Hybrid products that combine lump sums, income streams, and reserve access.
These are designed to better balance income stability with access to savings, especially as retirees live longer. 3. More Individualised Advice or Information While the covenant doesn’t force funds to give personal financial advice, it does push them to improve: • •
Member segmentation (e.g. age, balance size, eligibility for the Age Pension). Tailored communication about retirement income and risks.
Some funds now provide personalised retirement dashboards or nudges as you approach retirement.

4. Focus on Longevity and Risk Management The covenant encourages funds to help retirees manage risks like: • • •

This may influence how funds structure drawdown recommendations or encourage diversified income streams. What the Covenant Doesn’t Do • • •
It does not force members to use certain retirement products. It does not guarantee any minimum retirement income. It does not replace the need for personal financial advice.

The Retirement Income Covenant is a policy shift, aiming to make super funds more proactive in helping members transition into and navigate retirement. It empowers retirees with better support, tools, and potentially more secure income options. The Retirement Income Covenant is about to be reviewed, and industry funds are likely to be put on notice to demonstrate how they have been making active moves towards meeting these new requirements, especially around the introduction of new retirement income products. We have already started to see some industry funds partner with annuity providers with the aim to fulfill their obligations under the Retirement Income Covenant. What is of real interest to us is the recent 15% stake TAL acquired in Challenger: one of the leaders in the annuity space in Australia. Why this is of particular interest to us is that AustralianSuper had chosen TAL as the company of choice to build their inhouse annuity style product back in 2023. We are now wondering if the TAL will create a white label version of Challenger’s annuity products and offer these products via AustralianSuper’s investment platforms. If so, I would be 100% behind this move.

Eastfield is excited to announce that Ben Anderson has re-committed to the club as the senior coach for 2025/26 as well as the First XI Captain.
We are so thrilled to announce Lachlan Clarke will be returning to Eastfield for 2025/26.
We are excited to announce that Cody Andrews will be joining the Eastfield family in 2025/26.
After a great first season impacting with bat, ball and in the field, Clarko has also had a huge impact off the field at training and in junior program.
An exciting opening bowler that compliments our current bowling stocks and brings a difference with experience, bowling in Meehan Shield, Newey Plate and the Trollope Shield in the past 2 years. 84 Please join us in welcoming Cody to the nest for this season!
Ben has shown great leadership in the 2 seasons he has been at Eastfield and has been able to demonstrate incredible player development throughout the entire cricket club. Ben is excited for the future at Eastfield and the possibilities ahead of us. We couldn’t be prouder to have Ben on board at Eastfield. Stay tuned for more player announcements in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to Richard, Goodger and Zac on winning the Numurkah golf and bowls club 2025 Autumn bowls carnival over the Anzac weekend! Hosted by Numurkah golf and bowls club, it was a full weekend tournament with our guns being the only 7 game winner across Saturday and Sunday. They represented the club with honour and RBC thanks these Eagles as they 'soared' over the competition. Amazing jokes aside, the greens were lovely and the weather held fair. We encourage all members to look at joining tournaments as they are not only a lot of fun but also great for development and practice. We have a huge season ahead of us so it's best to stay sharp!
