About the Find Maroondah

The Find Maroondah is a community paper that aims to support all things Maroondah. We want to provide a place where all Not-For-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-andcoming events in the Find Maroondah for Free.

We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month.

We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area.

To help support the paper, we invite local business owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists.

Why Wildlife Corridors Matter

reptiles, insects and small mammals. For species such as the sugar glider, connected vegetation is particularly important, allowing them to move between feeding and nesting sites while reducing the need to descend to the ground where they become more vulnerable to predators.

Every day, thousands of people travel alongside Dandenong Creek on their way to work, school or home. For many, it is simply a green ribbon winding through Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

But for native wildlife, it is something far more important.

It is a lifeline.

Wildlife corridors are areas of connected habitat that allow animals to move safely between larger patches of bushland.

Rather than becoming isolated in small pockets of vegetation, species can search for food, find shelter, locate breeding partners and adapt to changing environmental conditions.

This movement is essential for healthy ecosystems.

In many urban environments, wildlife corridors are not continuous strips of bushland. Instead, they often function as a series of "stepping stones" – connected patches of habitat that allow animals to move progressively through the landscape. A remnant woodland, a creek reserve, a line of mature trees or a revegetated park can each provide places for wildlife to rest, feed or shelter before continuing their journey. The closer and better connected these habitat patches are, the more effective the corridor becomes.

These stepping stones are not limited to public reserves.

Gardens for Wildlife programs demonstrate how private gardens can also contribute to urban habitat. By planting indigenous species, retaining mature trees where possible and providing food and shelter for native animals, residents can help strengthen the connections that wildlife rely on across the landscape.

Maintaining these connections is an ongoing challenge in urban environments. As cities grow, protecting existing habitat becomes just as important as creating new habitat. Every revegetation project, every indigenous tree planted and every restored reserve has the potential to become another stepping stone, strengthening the links that wildlife rely on to move through the landscape.

This is where community organisations such as First Friends of Dandenong Creek play an important role.

For more than 25 years, volunteers have worked alongside councils, government agencies, businesses and local communities to restore habitat throughout the creek corridor.

Thousands of indigenous plants are established each year, not simply to beautify the landscape, but to improve habitat connectivity for native wildlife.

These projects are investments in the future. The seedlings planted today will mature into trees that provide food, shelter and, eventually, the hollows required by many native species.

Over time, individual planting sites become connected, strengthening the corridor and creating healthier ecosystems that support a greater diversity of wildlife.

Wildlife corridors remind us that conservation is rarely about protecting a single location. Instead, it is about ensuring that nature remains connected across the landscape.

Along Dandenong Creek, every restored reserve, every partnership and every volunteer contribution helps reinforce that connection. Together, they are creating a corridor that allows wildlife not only to survive within Melbourne, but to continue moving through it for generations to come.

The Dandenong Creek corridor is one of Melbourne's most significant urban wildlife corridors. Stretching from the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges to Port Phillip Bay, it links parks, wetlands, reserves and remnant bushland across a rapidly growing metropolitan landscape.

While the corridor supports many well-known species such as kangaroos, echidnas and numerous native birds, it also provides habitat for less conspicuous wildlife including frogs,

When Should You Update Your SMSF Trust Deed?

One of the most overlooked aspects of managing a Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) is ensuring that the fund's Trust Deed remains current and reflects the way the fund actually operates.

Many trustees establish an SMSF and then rarely look at the Trust Deed again.

However, as life changes, so too should the legal documents governing your fund. Failing to update your Trust Deed when circumstances change can create administrative issues, compliance risks and complications when benefits need to be paid.

What is an SMSF Trust Deed?

The Trust Deed is the governing document of an SMSF. It sets out the rules for how the fund operates, including: • • • • • •

Who can be members.

How trustees are appointed and removed.

How contributions can be accepted.

How pensions can be paid.

How death benefits are distributed.

The powers and responsibilities of the trustee.

While superannuation legislation overrides the Trust Deed where required, the deed must still provide the necessary powers for the trustee to carry out many actions.

When Should an SMSF Trust Deed Be Updated?

Although there is no requirement to update a Trust Deed every year, there are several situations where trustees should review it.

1. Changes in Superannuation Law Superannuation legislation changes regularly. Over time, new contribution rules, pension requirements and administrative provisions may require the Trust Deed to be amended to ensure the fund has the appropriate powers.

An outdated Trust Deed may prevent trustees from taking advantage of legislative opportunities or create uncertainty about whether certain actions are permitted.

Bringing a New Partner into the SMSF

One of the most common reasons to review an SMSF Trust Deed is when a member enters a new relationship and wishes to invite their spouse or de facto partner to join the fund.

Trust Deed Amendment

Consider the following situation: • • •

The SMSF currently has one individual member.

The fund has a corporate trustee.

The member is the sole director of the corporate trustee.

When a new spouse or de facto partner joins the SMSF, several legal changes generally need to occur.

Membership The new partner must apply to become a member of the fund and sign the necessary trustee declarations acknowledging their responsibilities under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act. Corporate Trustee Changes Because each member of an SMSF is generally required to be a director of the corporate trustee, the company will usually need to appoint the new partner as an additional director.

This requires: • •

Appointment of the new director.

Notification to ASIC within the required timeframe.

Updating the company's registers and records.

The Trust Deed should also be reviewed to ensure it: • • • •

Allows for the admission of the new member.

Correctly reflects the trustee structure.

Provides the necessary powers for the expanded membership.

Incorporates any legislative changes since the deed was originally executed

Depending on the age of the deed, advisers may recommend either a deed update or a complete deed replacement (also known as a deed upgrade).

Estate Planning Changes

If trustees wish to implement: • Binding Death Benefit Nominations, • Reversionary pensions, • Death benefit strategies, or • Estate planning arrangements, the Trust Deed should first be reviewed to ensure these provisions are supported.

How Does Homeopathy Work If It's So Diluted?

If you've ever looked into homeopathy, you've probably come across the same question: How can something work if there's almost nothing in it?

This is a fair question, and an internet search doesn’t do much to instil confidence in its amazing properties.

Homeopathy is different from conventional medicines, and its method of preparation challenges what many of us believe to be solid science.

Rather than dismissing the question, it is worth exploring. Science has a long history of observing that something works completely, before understanding why, and homeopathy is no exception.

A Brief History Homeopathy was developed over 200 years ago by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Dissatisfied with many of the medical treatments of his day, he began carefully observing how substances affected healthy people and how they might be used to help people experiencing similar symptoms.

Over the years, homeopathy has grown to be used by millions of people worldwide. It continues to be practised in many countries alongside conventional healthcare, particularly in European countries where it began, and India where the government cannot afford to subsidise expensive medications.

How Are Homeopathic Medicines Made?

Homeopathic medicines are prepared through a series of carefully controlled dilutions and vigorous shaking between each step, a process known as succussion. Each medicine is manufactured according to recognised pharmacopoeia standards to ensure consistency and quality. This preparation is one of the main reasons homeopathies attracts debate.

At higher potencies, many homeopathic medicines are diluted beyond the point where modern chemistry would predict any molecules of the original substance remain. From a conventional pharmacology perspective, this raises an obvious question: How could it possibly have an effect?

To date, science does not have a widely accepted answer. That uncertainty is often presented as evidence that homeopathy cannot work. However, the history of medicine reminds us that understanding often follows observation.

Observation Often Comes Before Explanation One of the best-known examples comes from the medicine known as Viagra.

Researchers originally developed sildenafil to treat angina, but clinical trials revealed an unexpected side effect and the drug proved ineffective for its intended purpose. This observation prompted further research, leading to its widespread use for erectile dysfunction. Rather than

reflecting a lack of scientific understanding, this demonstrates how careful observation and ongoing investigation can uncover valuable new clinical applications.

Medical history contains many similar examples. Aspirin was used long before scientists fully understood how it reduced pain and inflammation.

Penicillin was discovered because Alexander Fleming noticed something unexpected growing in a laboratory dish. Even today, researchers continue to discover new uses for existing medicines.

Scientific progress often begins with clinicians asking, "Why did that happen?"

This is an active area of research rather than a settled question.

Progress has been made, and the fact that homeopathy does contain minute substances has been verified. However, on shoestring budget, researchers continue to investigate the question using modern scientific methods.

Charge too little, and you might not cover your costs or earn the profit you need to sustain and grow your business.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand how to determine the right price for your product or service using smart pricing strategies.

1. Understand Your Costs The first step in pricing is understanding all of the costs involved in delivering your product or service. These costs typically break down into two categories: • Fixed Costs: These are costs that remain constant, regardless of how much you produce or sell. They include things like rent, utilities, software subscriptions, and salaried employees.

• Variable Costs: These fluctuate depending on how much you produce or sell. Materials, hourly wages, packaging, and shipping costs all fall under this category.

Once you’ve calculated both fixed and variable costs, you can figure out your break-even point—the minimum number of sales you need to cover both types of costs. This is crucial, as it ensures that your pricing will at least allow you to avoid losses.

2. Analyse the Market Next, you’ll want to research the market.

Understanding what your competitors charge is an essential part of the pricing strategy. However, just copying your competitors isn’t always the best approach. The History of the Heatherdale Junior Football Club

The Heatherdale Football Club was founded in 1969. This is the initial story: In 1967, Ray Woolridge took his eldest son, Peter, for a “kick” of footy on the Eastmont Primary School oval. Whilst they were having a “kick”, another boy asked if he could join in. At the end of the “kick” he asked, “Will you guys be coming again next week? If so, I’ll bring a few friends. And so he did just that!

Each Saturday morning, more and more boys arrived. Ray and Peter turned up each Saturday, and pretty soon some of the Dads started coming down too for a look and wanted to get involved.

In 1968, Ray organised 4 sets of jumpers. Red, Black, Green and Blue. And games were played amongst those teams. The “Blacks” won the first premiership coached by Barry Dennis.

The Heatherdale Junior Football Club was formed in 1969. A team of U/13s was entered into the Melbourne Boys League.

The Distance travelled was vast, and the opposition most aggressive. In 1971, the Club entered teams into the Doncaster and Districts Junior Football League.

In 1972, there were 4 Under 11 teams and one of those teams, coached by Frank Horsnaill, won the Club’s FIRST premiership.

It was also this year that the new pavilion was used for the first time.

The founder, Ray Woolridge, was President for the first 3 years, 1969-1971. Ray then went on to coach the Saturday morning competitions. In 1974, he took on the U/10s, a role that he held for a long time and was famous for. Kids would come from up to 20 kms away to play at Heatherdale to be part of the spirit that Ray had instilled, and the encouragement of every boy was a joy to their parents. Ray’s unique style of coaching saw him win 4 premierships and a “runners-up” 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1979. Ray went on to coach until 1990 and was also a trainer at Vermont Football Club for 10 years. He was affectionately known as “The Godfather” for the way he looked after the kids in his charge.

During the late 1970s and the early 1980s, the Heatherdale Football Club was unofficially the largest Football Club in Australia. With some 450 boys playing each week. This equates to about 18 teams. The Club wore purple and gold stripes and was known as the DALES. They competed in the DDFL until 1998, when a merger was done with Heathmont Junior Football Club.

It is important to note that Heatherdale contributed the larger percentage of kids at the time of the merger. Although the decision was not popular with everyone, the Committee felt it had simply run out of steam. Most age groups were struggling with player numbers as the local population changed and the area matured. While the Club's earlier success had begun to decline, Heatherdale remained a proud football club that shaped the lives of countless players, families, volunteers, and supporters. Those who were part of its journey continue to cherish the many wonderful memories made along the way.

AI and older Australians: why seniors deserve a seat at the table

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future possibility. It is rapidly becoming part of everyday life. Recognising this, the Australian Government has recently announced a National AI Plan alongside broader proposals for national AI standards, a dedicated Office of AI and increased investment in AI safety and governance. The Government says its vision is to ensure that AI “serves Australians, not the other way around”, while supporting innovation, productivity and economic growth. It has also acknowledged that the benefits of AI should be shared broadly across the community and that diverse voices must be included in shaping Australia’s AI future.

While much of the public discussion focuses on economic growth, technological innovation and managing risk, another conversation deserves equal attention: ensuring older Australians have a meaningful role in shaping technologies that will increasingly influence their healthcare, aged care services, financial security and independence.

AI is rapidly transforming how we live, work, access healthcare, manage finances and connect with others. Yet as governments, technology companies and researchers race to shape Australia’s AI future, one important group is often missing from the conversation: older Australians.

This is particularly concerning given that Australians aged over 65 are one of the fastest-growing population groups and are among those most likely to be affected by AI-driven changes in healthcare, aged care, banking, government services and online safety.

Research increasingly suggests that older adults do not want AI designed for them. They want it designed with them.

Older Australians Are Not “Technologically Challenged” A common misconception is that older people struggle with technology and are therefore less interested in emerging innovations such as AI. However, research paints a very different picture. Many older adults are curious

about AI, motivated to learn and keen to understand how these technologies may affect their lives. The challenge is not a lack of interest. Rather, it is that older Australians are frequently excluded from design and consultation processes despite being major users of AI-driven services.

As Australia develops its National AI Plan, this presents an important opportunity.

If the Government genuinely intends for AI to serve all Australians, older people must be included in conversations about how AI is designed, governed and implemented.

The Risk of Designing AI Without Older Voices AI systems learn from data. If older people are underrepresented in the data used to train these systems, the technology may not recognise or respond appropriately to their needs.

Older adults are often underrepresented in AI training datasets and technology design. This can contribute to bias and may reduce the effectiveness of AI-powered healthcare tools and support services. When older people are not involved in design processes, developers risk creating solutions based on assumptions rather than lived experience.

This issue becomes increasingly important as governments and organisations explore using AI within healthcare, aged care and public services. Decisions made today may influence how older Australians access services for decades to come.

Older Australians Want Consultation, Not Just Protection Public discussions about AI often focus on protecting older people from scams, misinformation and digital exclusion.

While these concerns are important, they are only part of the story.

Research participants involved in AI consultation studies expressed a strong desire to help shape the future of AI. They wanted input into: • •

What AI technologies are developed How personal data is collected and used

How AI is regulated and governed What safeguards are needed to prevent misuse How AI can support independence, health and wellbeing

Participants also emphasised the importance of transparency and informed consent when AI is used in healthcare and aged care settings.

This aligns closely with Australia’s new National AI Plan, which recognises the importance of ensuring AI benefits all Australians and highlights the need to include communities that may otherwise be overlooked as technology evolves.

The Growing Threat of AI-Enabled Scams One area where older Australians are particularly affected is online fraud.

AI-generated phishing emails, voice cloning, fake news stories and deepfake videos are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Older Australians are often targeted because scammers perceive them as having accumulated savings and being more trusting of authority figures.

Rather than being viewed solely as victims, many older adults believe they should be involved in discussions about scam prevention and digital safety. Some experts suggest AI itself may become part of the solution by helping users identify fraudulent content before harm occurs. Their experience and insights are valuable and should not be overlooked.

Building AI Literacy Among Older Australians One encouraging finding from recent research is that older adults are eager to learn about AI when education is practical, accessible and delivered through trusted community settings.

Australia’s National AI Plan also includes measures aimed at strengthening digital and data skills across the community, recognising that participation in an AI-enabled future requires access to education and learning opportunities.

Several existing programs already help support digital confidence among older Australians: Be Connected A nationally funded Australian Government initiative providing free digital skills training and community learning opportunities.

Community Technology Classes Libraries, neighbourhood houses and community organisations offer local technology support and training.

Public Library Programs Many libraries provide one-onone support covering computers, smartphones, internet safety and digital confidence.

University of the Third Age (U3A) Many U3A branches offer courses in computers, online safety and emerging technologies designed specifically for older learners.

Looking Ahead Australia is investing heavily in artificial intelligence and has now committed to a National AI Plan, AI safety initiatives, a future Office of AI and the development of national standards. Decisions made today will influence how Australians live, work and access services for decades to come.

This creates a rare opportunity to ensure that older Australians are not simply recipients of AI but contributors to its future.

Older Australians bring decades of lived experience, wisdom and practical insight. They understand what supports independence, dignity, safety and wellbeing because they live those realities every day.

The question is no longer whether older Australians can adapt to AI. The real question is whether policymakers, researchers and technology companies are willing to listen.

If Australia wants AI systems that are fair, inclusive and responsive to community needs, older Australians must be recognised not merely as users of technology, but as partners in its design.

Snow is a spirited young Husky cross with a big personality and plenty to say! This zesty young lady has been known to have a chat and loves being involved in whatever her people are doing.

Full of energy and cheekiness, she is looking for an active home.

Snow can be bouncy and excitable, so she would be best suited to a home with teenagers aged 16 years and older. She thrives with people who appreciate her playful nature and are committed to helping her continue learning good manners.

Like many clever, high-energy dogs, she can be reactive towards other dogs, particularly while out on walks. A lot of hard work with our trainer has shown that Snow has made fantastic progress. She has even managed to make a few dog friends along the way! Her future family will need experience handling dog-reactive dogs and be committed to continuing her training and management so she can keep building confidence and positive behaviours.

Snow would be happiest as the only dog in the home, where she can soak up all the love and attention for herself.

UNDERSTANDING THE TRANSFER BALANCE CAP – CAN YOU STILL CONTRIBUTE TO SUPER? RETIREMENT

For many Australians approaching or enjoying retirement, one of the most misunderstood superannuation rules is the Transfer Balance Cap (TBC). Many people believe that once they reach the cap, they can no longer contribute to superannuation. In reality, the rules are a little more complicated.

Understanding the difference between the Transfer Balance Cap and your Total Super Balance (TSB) can help you avoid costly mistakes and identify opportunities to continue building your retirement savings.

What is the Transfer Balance Cap? The Transfer Balance Cap is the maximum amount of superannuation that can be transferred from an accumulation account into a tax-free retirement income stream (accountbased pension).

For the 2025-26 financial year, the general Transfer Balance Cap is $2.0 million. Due to indexation, it increased to $2.1 million from 1 July 2026 for people commencing a retirement income stream for the first time, although many retirees will have their own personal Transfer Balance Cap based on when they first started a retirement pension.

Importantly, the Transfer Balance Cap does not limit how much super you can own. It simply limits how much can receive the tax advantages of being in the retirement (pension) phase.

For example: • You may have $2.8 million in super.

• You can only transfer up to your personal Transfer Balance Cap into a tax-free pension.

• The remaining balance stays in an accumulation account, where earnings continue to be taxed at a maximum rate of 15%.

Does reaching the Transfer Balance Cap stop you from contributing?

If your Total Super Balance is $2 million or more (2025-26) If your Total Super Balance was $2.0 million or more on 30 June 2025, you generally: • • • •

Cannot make non-concessional (after-tax) contributions.

Cannot use the bring-forward rule.

May still receive compulsory employer Super Guarantee contributions.

May still make concessional (before-tax) contributions, subject to the annual concessional contribution cap and eligibility requirements.

This is where many retirees become confused.

You may still be able to make concessional contributions Even if your Total Super Balance exceeds $2 million, you can generally still receive: • Employer Super Guarantee contributions • Salary sacrifice contributions • Personal deductible contributions These count towards your annual concessional contributions cap (subject to eligibility and any applicable rules).

Who cannot make after-tax contributions?

Generally, you cannot make non-concessional contributions if: • Your Total Super Balance equals or exceeds the General Transfer Balance Cap at the previous 30 June.

• You have already exceeded your available nonconcessional contribution cap.

• You do not satisfy other contribution eligibility requirements.

This rule catches many people by surprise because they assume they can always add more after-tax savings into super.

Common misconception A common statement is: “I’ve reached the Transfer Balance Cap, so I can’t contribute to super anymore.”

This isn’t always correct.

Many people confuse the Transfer Balance Cap with the rules governing superannuation contributions.

A person may have: • Reached their Transfer Balance Cap, • Be receiving a retirement pension, • Yet still be eligible to receive employer contributions or make concessional contributions.

Whether you can contribute depends primarily on your Total Super Balance (TSB) at 30 June of the previous financial year, not whether you have reached your Transfer Balance Cap.

Conversely, another person may never have started a pension but still be unable to make after-tax contributions because their Total Super Balance exceeds the relevant threshold.

Why Does Grandfathering Matter?

Is Your Client Grandfathered Under the New Residential Aged Care Rules?

Australia’s aged care reforms introduced significant changes to how residents contribute towards the cost of residential aged care from 1 November 2025. While many people entering care after this date are subject to the new fee structure, others may qualify for valuable grandfathering provisions that preserve aspects of the previous rules.

Understanding whether a client is fully grandfathered, partially grandfathered, or not grandfathered at all can have a significant impact on their ongoing costs and long-term financial position. Information regarding residential aged care fees and means testing is available through the Australian Government’s Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, Services Australia, and My Aged Care.

What Does Grandfathering Mean?

The aged care reforms separate grandfathering into two distinct areas: • Accommodation payments • Ongoing care costs A client may qualify for protection under one or both of these categories.

Generally speaking: • Individuals who entered permanent residential aged care before 1 November 2025 will continue under the previous arrangements for both accommodation payments and ongoing care fees.

• Clients who were approved for a Home Care Package on 12 September 2024 but do not enter residential care until after 1 November 2025 receive only partial grandfathering. They retain the previous rules for ongoing care costs but not accommodation payments.

• Clients who did not meet either of these criteria will generally be assessed entirely under the new fee arrangements.

Being grandfathered can provide several financial advantages.

For accommodation payments, grandfathered residents: • are not subject to retention amounts deducted from refundable accommodation deposits (RADs); and • are not affected by future Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) indexation.

For ongoing care costs, grandfathered residents continue under the existing means-tested care fee arrangements rather than becoming subject to the newer Hotelling Contribution and Non-Clinical Care Contribution introduced under the reforms.

Depending on a person’s income and assets, this difference can represent many thousands of dollars over the course of their stay in residential aged care.

Services Australia continues to assess residents’ income and assets for aged care purposes, while the Department of Health determines the fee framework that applies under the legislation.

Situations That Often Cause Confusion Many people assume they lose grandfathering if paperwork or payments occur after 1 November 2025. In most cases this is not correct.

For example, a resident who entered residential care before 1 November 2025 remains grandfathered even if: • their means assessment is completed after that date; or • they pay their lump sum accommodation payment after 1 November 2025.

The important factor is generally when permanent residential care commenced, not when administrative requirements are completed.

Can Grandfathering Be Lost?

Yes. A resident may lose some or all grandfathering protections in certain circumstances.

Examples include: • leaving residential care for more than 28 days (excluding approved leave such as hospital leave); • voluntarily electing to cease grandfathering for ongoing care costs; or • changing residential aged care facilities after giving up grandfathering for ongoing costs.

These situations should always be carefully considered before making decisions about changing facilities or care arrangements, as they may permanently affect the fees payable.

AUGUST 2026 Case Study – Why a Historical Home Care Package Approval Matters John, aged 83, has lived independently for several years. In September 2024 he was approved for a Level 4 Home Care Package, although he never commenced services because his family was able to provide the support he needed.

In early 2027, John’s health declines and he decides to enter permanent residential aged care.

Because he was approved for a Home Care Package on 12 September 2024, John qualifies for partial grandfathering.

This means: • his accommodation payment will be assessed under the post-1 November 2025 rules because he entered residential care after that date; however • his ongoing care costs continue under the previous means-tested care fee arrangements instead of the new contribution framework.

Now compare this with Margaret, who has almost identical assets, income and care needs, and enters the same residential aged care facility on the same day. Margaret was never approved for a Home Care Package before the reforms.

Although their financial circumstances are virtually identical, Margaret is assessed entirely under the new fee structure and may pay significantly higher ongoing care costs throughout her stay.

This example demonstrates why reviewing a client’s historical Home Care Package approval can be an important part of aged care planning.

Planning Opportunities For advisers and families, determining whether a client is grandfathered should be one of the first questions asked when planning an aged care strategy.

It is important to review: • when permanent residential aged care commenced; • whether the client was approved for a Home Care Package on 12 September 2024; • any breaks in residential aged care; • whether future transfers between facilities are likely; and • the long-term financial implications before making any decisions.

Small details can make a significant difference to the fees a resident pays over many years.

In Summary The aged care reforms have introduced a more complex fee system, making it increasingly important to establish exactly which rules apply to each individual.

Grandfathering provisions can substantially reduce ongoing costs for eligible residents, but eligibility depends on specific dates and circumstances. Before entering residential aged care—or changing providers—it is worth obtaining professional financial advice to ensure valuable grandfathering benefits are not unintentionally lost.
