ALL THINGS MANNINGHAM The City of Manningham is a local government area in Victoria, Australia in the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Manningham had a population of approximately 125,508 as at the 2018 Report which includes 27,500 business and close to 45,355 households. The Doncaster and Templestowe Council administered the area until December 15, 1994.

We want to provide a place where all Not-For-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-andcoming events in the Find Manningham for Free.

We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month.

We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area.

To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists.

App To Help Domestic Violence Compliance (Australian Associated Press)

NSW authorities hope a new app will help hold domestic violence perpetrators to account and increase compliance with court-ordered protection orders.

NSW Attorney-General Mark Speakman has launched the government-funded Avow app as part of a package of products to help people understand their legal obligations under an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order.

The app provides information to perpetrators about the consequences of breaching an ADVO, which can limit their contact with their victim to ensure they do not stalk or intimidate them.

“The scourge of domestic violence needs to be tackled both by protecting victims and by helping perpetrators to stop their abusive behaviour,” Mr Speakman said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The Avow app puts information perpetrators need to comply with their ADVO at their fingertips.”

The app includes information about

ADVOs and court processes; features that allow users to add their ADVO conditions and plan for how they will comply with them; and a directory and links to support services.

A new NSW Police referral card will also be used to promote the app and encourage perpetrators to contact the Men’s Referral Service that can put them in touch with support, including Men’s Behaviour Change programs.

Police Assistant Commissioner Leanne McCusker said police responded to nearly 400 domestic violence incidents across NSW every day.

“Last year alone we identified nearly 17,000 breaches of ADVO incidents,” she said.

“The Avow App will give perpetrators the information they need to ensure they are abiding by the requirements of the ADVO, and they can access referral pathways to get the help they need to change their behaviour.”

Legal Aid NSW chief executive Brendan Thomas said “while nothing beats in-

person legal advice, the app will serve as an invaluable reference tool that will help to keep victims safe and perpetrators out of jail”.

The Avow app was developed by the Department of Communities and Justice with the Department of Customer Service and Miroma Project Factory.

Housing Affordability In Australia – A Rental Crises

The crisis around the affordability of rent is becoming an increasing issue for everyday Australians. Currently, the crisis is not about affording your own home but rather about the ability to afford the rise in rental costs.

With the increase in the cost of living, rental prices going up, COVID restrictions, no real increase in wages, and many investors moving back into their own investment properties, we are starting to see more and more families being displaced from their rental properties.

Many people are finding it difficult to afford a home to live in. We are not talking about the ability to purchase a home but simply the ability to pay rent so you have a roof over your head.

What is housing affordability?

The term ‘housing affordability’ usually refers to the relationship between expenditure on housing (prices, mortgage payments or rents) and household incomes. The concept of housing affordability is different to the concept of ‘affordable housing’, which refers to low-income or social housing.

Affordability for owners Housing affordability in Australia has broadly declined since the early 1980s.

The OECD’s price to income ratio index shows an 82% increase between 1980 and 2021 with the house price-to-income ratio in Australia now at 10.3.50. The house price-to-rent ration in Australia is estimated at 114.4. This indicates how strongly the property market with rent prices continue to increase.

Home values up almost 10 per cent over the year The CoreLogic Daily Home Value Index has revealed that home values across the combined five capital cities have risen by 9.9 per cent year-to-date, and 9.0 per cent over the past 12 months.

Loans for investment properties continue to gain pace, while owner-occupied lending slowed in April, according to new APRA data.

The latest monthly authorised deposit-taking institution (ADI) statistics from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) have showed that total residents’ loans and finance leases increased by 0.2 per cent ($6 billion) over the month of April.

In home lending, owner-occupied loans grew by $6.9 billion or 0.6 per cent. However, the rate of growth continues to slow, having previously increased by 0.7 per cent ($8.3 billion) in March.

Investor lending has also continued its upward trajectory, with investment lending increasing by $2.1 billion or 0.3 per cent in April. This increased on March’s growth rate when it rose 0.2 per cent ($1.6 billion).

Even with increasing property values, investors are still purchasing a lot of the properties in the marketplace, which is placing additional pressure on those seeking their own homes and those seeking affordable rentals. With increased purchase prices, investment owners will want to see more rent being brought in even though interest rates are at historical lows.

Even with Victoria’s lockdown 4.0, this has failed to dampen the auction market in Melbourne, according to CoreLogic.

The property research group’s auctions data for the week ending 30 May revealed that there were 1,264 homes taken to auction in Melbourne compared to 261 auctions held in Melbourne this time last year. Despite actions being closed due to lockdown, auctions volumes remained strong in Melbourne, while CoreLogic recorded a preliminary clearance rate of 72.8 per cent in the capital city.

Affordability for renters The ABS’ Housing Occupancy and Costs publication indicates that the proportion of households which are renters has increased from 26% to 31%. In addition, the proportion of households renting from private landlords has increased from 18% to 26% over the same period.

On average, private renters spend more of their gross household income on housing costs than other tenure types. Specifically, the ABS reports private renters spent 20% of their gross household income on housing costs, compared with 16% for those with a mortgage.

The cost of renting privately has increased significantly. The ABS’ Housing Occupancy and Costs publication indicates a 62% increase in average weekly housing costs (after inflation). This compares to a 42% increase for owners with a mortgage and 45% for public renters.

This increase in rental costs is placing significant pressure on those families living in rental properties, especially, single mothers who have predominate care for the children. This ‘housing stress’ needs to be addressed by all sides of parliament.

What is housing stress?

A household is typically described as being in ‘housing stress’ if it is paying more than 30% of its income in housing costs. As

If the supply of affordable housing is to be increased sufficiently to meet mediumto long-term demand, then this could be met through (among other things) institutional investment in the affordable end of the residential market.

The main barrier to such investment would appear to be that institutional investors have shown relatively little interest in affordable housing, largely due to perceptions of risk and affordable housing’s comparatively low returns. If investors’ reluctance is to be overcome, then it is likely that this will require government incentives and the introduction of some form of financial instrument (like the discontinued National Rental Affordability Scheme).

Once you find a property, the lender will do a valuation on the property to ensure you have not paid too much for it, which increases the risk, to what you have offered. Many lenders will provide a pre-approval based on the figures you supply without doing any checks.

This can come back to burn you though if they then find something they do not like in your application and subsequently decline your application after you have found the property. Ideally you want to find a lender who does a full check of your details and paperwork before offering a pre-approval so that the only detail missing is the property details. Home Elusive Home I've been joking with my friends that house hunting for a rental isn't too different from online dating. It's endless scrolling through promising options only to find out that the photos are very old or the size of the "property" is conveniently skewed. Laughing about it seems like a much better alternative to crying. Even so, there have been tears these past few weeks since finding out that my landlords are moving back in.

Despite having braced myself for the announcement and telling myself that this time I wouldn't allow myself to be overcome with anxiety, the consuming squeeze instantly returned and my lungs felt as if they lost 80% capacity. You see, I've already had to find a new home three times in the 9 years of being a solo mum in Melbourne, and honestly, I don't know if I have it in me to face the harsh process yet again.

This is what people don't seem to realise.

I'm not "house hunting". I am in fact searching for a 'home' for me and my two teenage daughters and there is a big difference. An investment property can be referred to as a house. As can a building that is purely going to be functional. However, that's not what I'm looking for.

I want a home for me and my kids. A home where we create memories for the next chapter and a place that we will look back on as part of our story. I want my next home to reflect who we are. Aesthetics are really important to us. So is light. So is smell. So is greenery and the lack of noise. Looking at rentals that fit my budget means that I need to overlook those really important aspects as to what makes a home for us. And sadly, even if I apply for one of these lacklustre properties, it's highly unlikely that I will be accepted as a tenant.

The last two times that I had to move it took me over three months of searching

to find something, and even then, it was because of a connection to a friend with a house and not an agency that accepted us. Apparently not being partnered means that my application gets put at the bottom of the pile. In fact, last time when I was searching there was a landlord that preferred having his house empty for 6 weeks over Christmas instead of taking a risk with a single mum, even when I offered to pay two months of rent in advance.

When other solo mothers hear that I'm trying to find a rental they all say that it's impossible unless I ask a man to sign the application form with me, pretending to be my partner. I'd be lying if I said that I hadn't considered it. But honestly I don't even know who I would ask for such an uncomfortable favour and I seriously doubt that there are many men out there who would feel confident stepping in with someone unless it was a really close friendship.

It's almost impossible not to feel hopeless about the situation and I keep daydreaming about ways to circumvent the system. I have a few helpful friends sending me links to co-ops and shared housing programs but everything has a long waiting list and even the best case scenario means that I'll have months of being homeless until a place becomes available.

This past weekend I met a 70 year old woman, who like me, has spent most of her adult life as a solo parent. I stepped into her sunny home surrounded by a gorgeous patio full of thriving plants and flowers. Her living room was painted yellow and she had art and posters on the walls that indicated a vibrant and rich life. I could totally picture myself living in a home like this and asked her if she owned it. It turned out that she did and went on to explain that she was very very lucky.

Apparently when she was a young mum trying to find a rental for herself and her daughter, the government set up a scheme where solo parents only had to save up for a very reasonable deposit and then their mortgage repayments were capped - no higher than 25% of income. I could hear myself sighing as she told me what this had meant for her at the time. No more dreaded moves, an opportunity to grow roots, find connection with her local community, and the opportunity to create long term friendships with her neighbours.

I don't even allow myself to dream about belonging to a place that reflects who we are as a family.

Sometimes I think back to when I was going through my divorce and how much I had hoped that there was a way for me and my four children to be able to stay in our home. If I had known then how difficult it would be to find rentals in Melbourne would I have tried harder to gain ownership of our house? In only 9 years the house I used to own has doubled in value for my ex-husband while I'm now attempting to find our fourth home to rent. It really isn't a fair system and something that our leaders should be prioritising to change.

While we wait for that to happen I really hope that landlords realise how challenging it is for us solo parents to find homes for ourselves and our children. As well as understand what a huge impact they can have by choosing a solo parent as their future tenant even if it means not having the security of two incomes on the application. The long term impact on a solo parent and their children is a beautiful contribution to a kinder and safer society that all of us will ultimately benefit from.

Moving House Not What You Expect

A family of mum, dad and two adult sisters was renting a house in Croydon which was sold in November 2020. They had six months to find somewhere.

Sounds easy? Nope!

They began their search immediately, contacting real estate agents in the Croydon, Ringwood, Warranwood and Wonga Park areas. They found it difficult even to find a home that could fit 5 adults in, their 26-year-old son now moving back in with them to help pay the rent. Their research discovered homes that looked good on paper or on the internet but weren’t quite right in reality. One house looked lovely from the front, with views over the Dandenongs at the back. However, the bathrooms and bedrooms at the back overlooked other properties and had obligatory frosted windows that blocked views and light.

Another had a kitchen and bathrooms that were shoddy. Others were smaller than the photos implied. The house they eventually were able to rent (finding it five and a half months after they started

looking) is in a court with not much room for the garbage truck to turn around. All the other dwellings customarily dump their rubbish bins on this family’s nature strip. That wasn’t in the real estate agent’s report!

One Quarter Of Vaccines Sitting Unused Paul Osborne (Australian Associated Press)

New figures show almost a quarter of all available doses of the COVID-19 vaccines are not being used.

The federal health department on Monday released data comparing the availability of vaccine doses and the number of jabs delivered.

Nationally, dose utilisation as of week 12 of the vaccine rollout was 77 per cent.

The Northern Territory had the worst lag of all the jurisdictions, with 47,652 doses available and 22,953 administered, giving it a utilisation rate of just 58 per cent.

Victoria (77 per cent)

Queensland was the worst performing state, with 317,810 doses available and 170,330 delivered – or a usage rate of 64 per cent.

ACT (82 per cent).

Across the other states and territories rates were: Tasmania (90 per cent)

WA (80 per cent) SA (79 per cent)

The health department found all doses available for the aged and disability care program were being used, while the commonwealth primary care program was at 75 per cent utilisation. So far, 3.1 million doses have been administered nationally. Health Minister

Greg Hunt said some adjustments may be needed in the states and territories.

“We are encouraging all the states and territories – who we believe are doing an excellent job – to continue to use their vaccines,” he told reporters in Melbourne.

“And where they feel that they have more capacity to open up channels, or where they feel they are using their capacity, to adjust their ordering.”

Commodore Eric Young from the Vaccine Operations Centre said utilisation rates had dropped when the vaccine program was “recalibrated”. But the rates were now improving, he said.

SUPPORTING RETIREES: A Temporary Reduction in Superannuation Minimum Drawdown Rates

On the 29th of May, the Morrison Government announced an extension of the temporary reduction in superannuation minimum drawdown rates for a further year to 30 June 2022.

As part of the response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Government responded immediately and reduced the superannuation minimum drawdown rates by 50 per cent for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 income years, ending on 30 June 2021.

The announcement extends that reduction to the 2021-22 income year and continues to make life easier for our retirees by giving them more flexibility and choice in their retirement.

For many retirees, the significant losses in financial markets as a result of the COVID-19 crisis are still having a negative effect on the account balance of their superannuation pension.

This extension builds on the additional flexibility announced in the 2021-22 Budget.

The Morrison Government will continue to support retirees as part of our plan to secure Australia’s economic recovery from COVID-19.

Croydon Heroes And Iconic Places.

Jim Burns is an iconic figure in Croydon.

His pharmacy on the corner of Main St and Devon Avenue is the life line for many in our community. For many decades Jim has divided his time between service to the community through a drug rehabilitation clinic, being an active reserve Army member, and for more than fifty years being a committee member of Croydon Conservation Society. He is passionate about Croydon, it’s community and holding dearly the community connections and the environment that we enjoy. Recently he was honoured with street art to acknowledge him often being the first person to go to in need of help, hence the concept of the band-aid.

This next piece was written by one of our CCS committee, her permission to publish has been given.

The memorial pool.

With Jim Burns being deservedly recognised for his life of kindness and responsibility, I’d like to bring up a topic that is dear to his heart.

Do you know why the Croydon outdoor pool is called the Memorial Pool? It’s because after the World Wars the people, groups and businesses of Croydon donated money to build a pool for the whole community. The Council broke the back of the pool several years ago in an effort to save money, they got the deep end filled with concrete after removing the diving tower. They are now keen to shut the pool down and remove it from the people who paid for it. The Memorial pool is not only a hole in the ground filled with water; it’s a natural gathering place for rich life experiences that many of you remember. Here’s a response I sent to Council. The words were developed after speaking with Jim and other members of the Croydon Conservation Society.

I hope this might strike a chord with anyone who’s grandparents and parents fought in the Wars for the benefit of all and came back to build a pool for the benefit of all.

the pool add to the growing forgetting of “Lest we forget?” in the same way as shifting the War Memorial to a less prominent place?

Are there people in the community who will fight to protect the asset they created out of nothing? Are these same people still angry that the pool was destroyed by an ill- advised attempt to make it shallower? Do dark, noisy, extremely chlorinated indoor pools provide the same kind of natural, gentle, coming of age experiences as a beautiful outdoor pool surrounded by grass and trees, rich with the sweet smells of sunshine, suntan lotion and puberty? If, despite

objections, the pool is incorrectly seen as an unnecessary expense, will the land it’s on be made into a War Memorial park that retains the trees and provides a picnic area and perhaps some BBQs

in attractive shelters? Will the War Memorial, currently in pride of place in the Croydon roundabout, be placed in the centre of a new garden with the names of local people who gave their lives in the great wars for our way of life?

Will there be a large water fountain where children can play chicken with jets of cool water that race in complex patterns that, with enough observation, can be learned so kids can broaden their problem solving and pattern recognition as well as enriching their hearts with the joy of play? Will the fountain be programmable so schools can create their own displays? On hot days, will the park be a beautiful cool place for families and teens to gather to cool down and be in nature together? In autumn, will the trees gradually give over their green umbrella to glorious colours reminding of us of our lost soldiers and letting the low sun warm the ground? On cold days will the Gridiron players who fought their sporting wargame in the paddock next door, gather for BBQs and beers on the crazy paving? In spring, will new life flourish again?The Memorial Pool is not just a hole in the ground. It is a valuable piece of Croydon history.” If you’ve read this far, thank you for your time. Victorian Labor Government – New Taxes And Increased Stamp Duty

Days after the Victorian government announced that it will increase stamp duty and land tax across the state, the Shadow Treasurer of Labor, Jim Chalmers, came out stating that Federal Labor will aim to abolish stamp duty and land tax.

Either the Labor leaders are not talking to each other or the Victorian Labor leader, Dan, has decided to try and get a few more bucks out of the Victorian people before this opportunity runs dry. Maybe the Labor Federal leaders just don’t like how Dan is running the show? After all, they did overturn the China Road project that Dan wanted to implement in Victoria even though it was against Australia’s public security interests.

This is not the first time Dan has opposed his counterparts in Canberra and opted for Victorians to pay more taxes. Does anyone remember that Victorians could have paid less in tolls if Dan had accepted the federal governments hand out but he elected not to?

So, what are these new taxes that Dan is wanting to introduce to Victorians at a time where families are doing it tough during COVID? 1. Payroll tax changes All businesses will national payroll taxes greater than $10 million will have to start paying a payroll tax surcharge of 0.5% (raising the rate from 4.85% to 5.35%), whilst national payrolls above $100 million will have to pay a surcharge of 1%. The Business Council of Australia has come out and stated that this a tax on jobs and once again business owners will have to flip the bill for Labor’s spending habits.

2. Transfer duty rate changes With a lot of properties now worth over $2 million dollars, Labor sees this as a good place to make some additional money. From 1st July, 2021, all property transactions over $2 million will be taxed a higher transfer rate of 6.5% of the dutiable value in excess of $2 million. This sends a strong message to all that Labor will continue to tax those who own property. Yep, realise the Australian dream of owning a property but the Labor government will take their fair share of your dream with them.

3. Windfall gain tax The newest tax on the block, is the ‘windfall gain tax’. This will hit developers and land holders who will receive windfall gains when their properties are rezoned. In the past, if a property was rezoned, there was not tax on the potential gain but now there will be. Any gain over $500,000 will receive a 50 per cent tax. Where in the world are property developers, including Mum & Dad developers, going to come up with $250,000 plus to pay in tax when they may not have sold the property? This will simply result in property prices increasing to cover this tax which is supposedly against Labor’s policy of trying to make housing more affordable.

4. Land tax Land taxes are set to rise by 0.25% for taxable landholdings worth more than $1.8m and 0.3% for landholdings over $3m. Let’s face it, with increases in property prices, anyone owning an investment property is likely to be

faced with additional land tax. This increased tax is on top of the Foreign Land Tax Surcharge and Absentee Owner Surcharge that certain landholders are required to pay.

Whilst Victorians are still struggling with COVID and the continued lockdowns, with job losses and businesses struggling to keep their staff on, the Victorian Labor government believes it is a good time to introduce higher taxes and more taxes to those who own a business and/or own land.

Labor use to represent the battlers but since those battlers have made a go of it for themselves, with hard work and grim determination, Labor now thinks it is appropriate to expect those same battlers to pay higher taxes for simply succeeding in life. What does Labor stand for anymore?

Where is Dan anyway? Is he currently in Victoria doing it tough like the rest of us?

Birt Lavis - Heathmont Icon HERITAGE & HISTORY

Bert Lavis played a key role in Ringwood’s history, not only as well-known citizen, shop-owner and Councillor, but as first Mayor of the City of Ringwood.

EARLY YEARS Albert George Lavis was born in Bristol, England in early 1906, the son of Fred Albert Lavis and Florence Marion Nokes. Following WWI, in 1921, the family migrated to Australia and landed in Melbourne on 8th December. Bert was only 15 years old at the time and his younger sister, Kathleen, was 11.

He met Audrey Andrewartha and married her on 3rd August 1935 in South Australia.

His parents settled in the CamberwellBalwyn area. His mother died in 1963 and his father ten years later.

COMING TO RINGWOOD In 1947 the Lavis’, with friends, bought 25 acres in Canterbury Road opposite Heathmont Park from Mr Sell for £2000.

The land stretched from Canterbury Road to Reilly Street, the southern boundary of Jubilee Park, and Wantirna Road to the west.

COUNCIL LIFE Bert was nominated for the South Ward of Ringwood Council to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Cr. Barry Smith. He canvassed 255 houses in the

South Ward, was elected and served as a Councillor from August 1951 to 1967. He was also Mayor in 1956/57 and 1959/60.

He had the glorious duty of being the inaugural Mayor of Ringwood on 9th March, 1960 when His Excellency, the Governor of Victoria, General Sir Dallas Brooks, proclaimed Ringwood as a City (see photo above). During the week there were celebrations with the Pageant of Progress. On Saturday, there were more than 60 floats in a pageant (see below), a carnival and the Proclamation Ball in the town hall. Special Church services were held on Sunday.

In those days, Mayors used own cars, provided supper and paid for wet cupboard and all other expenses. The first time the allowance was £250, the second £850 and Bert had to pay for the Mayoral Ball each year.

PRIVATE LIFE Bert ran a hardware store for many years at 155 Canterbury Road, Heathmont, not far from his property. It was a purposebuilt shop and was located on the west end of Heathmont, opposite Dickasons Road.

OTHER MEMORIES Bert and Audrey Lavis lived at 263 Canterbury Road Heathmont, near Jarma Road, the property being sold by the family in 2002 by CE Carter. It was part of his original estate and now accommodates town houses.

The shopping centre on the West side of the railway line contained Mr Maiden’s Post Office and a small grocery store, with Mr. Cutting’s grocery store on corner. Mrs Byrne owned a brick pair of buildings and built two shops in front – the E.S.&A. Bank occupied one and the Lavis hardware store in the other.

When Canterbury Road became a highway 20 feet was taken from the nature strips on either side, 3 lanes of traffic divided by a median strip, with footpaths and road made. Traffic had increased tremendously.

Bert bought land next to the Post Office and sold the block for a butchers shop, and built two-storey building as a hardware store – upstairs was a doctor, hairdresser and an estate agent. It was sold in 1966.

The Heathmont Football Club named their pavilion the A.G. Lavis Pavilion, the first ever to be named after a Councillor. He continued on Council until 1967, as well as sitting on Bench as Justice of Peace for many years. He was Life Governor and Secretary of Lionswood Village and continued with community activities both in Ringwood and Heathmont. A wing in Lionsbrae Retirement Village is named after his honour. He was connected with Heathmont Scouts for many years and awarded a badge for service. He died on the 1st July 1984 after a very serviceable and fulfilling life.

Biodiversity Concerns High Among Aussies

A new report has found Australia is leading a global trend showing hundreds of millions of people are concerned by biodiversity loss.

The study by The Economist Intelligence Unit is called “An Eco-wakening: Measuring global awareness, engagement and action for nature”.

Commissioned by the World Wide Fund for Nature, part of the research analysed news articles and social media trends from 2016 to 2020.

The report found Australia exceeds global averages on many key findings relating to public concern for nature.

In Australia, stories on biodiversity and nature increased by 407 per cent, from 37,562 articles in 2016 to 190,558 articles in 2020. While globally, there was also a big jump with the number of online news articles on the same topics growing by 19 per cent in the same period.

Since 2016, nature-loss and biodiversity conversations have grown globally, with a 65 per cent increase in twitter mentions.

The report found in Australia, the popularity of Google searches related to sustainability and biodiversity in the shopping category surged by 165 per cent.

WWF said the research shows people all over the world are increasingly aware of the planetary crisis.

The research found Australia sits alongside the UK, the US, Germany and Canada in driving this trend, which is forcing corporations to respond, particularly in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, fashion and food sectors.

The report listed three possible barriers for nature still being under threat – existing laws and regulations, cost implications and a lack of awareness.

WWF-Australia CEO Dermot O’Gorman said extreme events have likely influenced the explosion in news stories and tweets about nature-loss in Australia, and the substantial jump in sustainability shopping. “Given the unprecedented bushfire crisis, it’s understandable these categories

were through the roof in Australia compared to global average increases,” Mr O’Gorman said.

“This surge of interest has been driven by so many conservation groups working to raise awareness of nature-loss and the plight of Australia’s wildlife after the fires.”

The report found the number of people signing online petitions to protect the environment is also on the rise.

Since 2016, more than 159 million signatures for biodiversity-related campaigns have been collected globally.

The report cited an Australian Conservation Foundation petition which gained almost half a million signatures from people calling for stronger national environmental laws in Australia.

The report comes ahead of International Day for Biodiversity on the 22nd of May, which the UN hopes will increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues

Expanding non-concessional contribution bring forward rule

Super announcements NOT included in the budget

The ability to access the bring forward arrangements for nonconcessional contributions where up to $330,000(2021-22) can be contributed will extend to those 67-74 years of age (currently available to those under 65).

The two standout measures that were not addressed in the budget and will therefore proceed as legislated include: •

The compulsory super guarantee contribution rate will increase from 9.5% to 10% from 1 July 2021.

$450 per month super guarantee threshold abolished

The temporary 50% reduction in minimum pension payments will cease from 1 July 2021 with minimum payments returning to standard rates as outlined below.

Employers will be required to pay super guarantee contributions to all employees over age 18 irrespective of how much they earn in the month.

Downsizer contributions available from age 60 The ability to make a downsizer contribution to super when selling your home will extend to those 60 years and over (currently must be 65+) allowing many more to take advantage of an extra $300,000 per person to be invested in super.

Combining this measure with the non-concessional bring forward rules outlined above, those aged 60 to 74 and selling a home will have the opportunity to contribute up to $630,000 per person (or $1.26 million as a couple) into super without exceeding any caps.

First home super saver scheme boost The amount of voluntary super contributions that can be withdrawn to help purchase your first home will increase from $30,000 to $50,000. The annual contribution limit for this scheme will remain at $15,000.

Two year window to exit some legacy retirement products Those looking to commute their restrictive legacy retirement products that were purchased before 20 September 2007 (often referred to as ‘complying’ products) will have the opportunity to roll back these funds to super, commence a new income stream or withdraw the funds from super altogether. The types of products impacted under this measure include term allocated pensions (TAPs), marketlinked, life expectancy and lifetime income streams including those provided by self-managed super funds (SMSFs).

Tax Low and middle income tax offset (LMITO) to stay for another year The LMITO, which provides a tax offset of up to $1,080, was due to cease on 30 June 2021. This tax benefit will now be extended until 30 June 2022. The offset is automatically calculated when you lodge your income tax return.

Tax residency rules simplified Currently, four (often conflicting) tests are used to determine if you are an Australian tax resident for income tax purposes.

The Government has proposed to simplify this system by applying one primary test - an Australian tax resident is someone who has physically been in Australia for at least 183 days in the financial year. Additional secondary tests may be used for those who do not meet the primary test.

Small business tax concessions extended 12 months Businesses will continue to benefit from two significant concessions announced last year as follows: •

Eligible businesses with annual turnover less than $5 billion will be able to deduct the full cost of depreciable assets first used or installed before 30 June 2023.

•

Eligible companies can carry back losses for another year being the 2022-23 year to offset against profits in 201819 or later years.

Federal Budget 2021–22: Impacts To Businesses And Their Owners

On 11 May 2021, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down the 2021–22 Federal Budget.

Here is a list of some of the major tax announcements that may impact private businesses and their owners: Extension of Temporary Full Expensing and Loss Carry Back The Government will extend the temporary full expensing and the loss carry-back measures into 2023.

This measure entitles businesses with an aggregated turnover of under $5 billion to an immediate deduction for ‘eligible capital assets’ acquired from 7.30pm AEDT on 6 October 2020 and needs to be installed or used before 30 June 2022. If legislated, the 30 June deadline will be extended to 30 June 2023.

The loss carry-back measure amended the tax losses regime to temporarily allow eligible corporate entities (with a turnover capped at $5 billion) to use losses that are incurred in the income

years 2019–20, 2020–21 or 2020–22 to be retrospectively applied against profits made in the 2018–19 year or later years. If the proposed changes are legislated, the measure will also apply to losses incurred in the 2022–23 income years.

Minor changes to Individuals Claiming Self-Education Expenses For those paying self-education expenses, the first $250 paid is not deductible. This has caused confusion for many people who have submitted their own returns.

The government will remove the $250 non-deductible amount so that the full amount of self-education expenses can be claimable.

Unfortunately, this Budget measure still does not allow individuals to deduct education and training expenses they incur, where the expense is not related to their current employment.

The self-education expenses must be in connection with the individual’s current employment and production of their assessable income.

How to Prepare for End of Financial Year BOOKKEEPER

It’s that time of year again, and what a year it’s been! Business owner’s across the globe were forced to adapt and reshape their businesses in order to thrive during the ever changing lockdowns and covid restrictions. Now, before we can breathe a sigh of relief that this financial year is over, let’s go over how you as a business owner can prepare for June 30th.

Here are our top tips on preparing for end of financial year: 1. Review your Accounts - Probably the most important aspect of preparing for the end of financial year is making sure all of your accounts are up to date. This means reviewing your payroll and STP lodgments, ensuring your accounts are all reconciled correctly, confirming you have all of the receipts you wish to claim, etc. If you’ve been doing the books yourself, perhaps you might consider having a bookkeeper or accountant review your files to ensure everything is up to date and meets the requirements.

2. Review your finances - Once your accountant or bookkeeper has ensured your file is all correct and up to date it’s a good idea to sit down and review your finances. How did you track this year? How do your finances track against your monthly/ quarterly/yearly budget? Did you meet your targets? Perhaps your finances fell shorter than estimated this year. It’s important to understand the current and true financial position of your business to help determine what you as a business owner can do differently next year to put more dollars in your pocket.

3. Review your business plan - This is a great time to sit down and review your business plan. Maybe you want to be better prepared for unforeseen circumstances and determine what different avenues you can take to adapt to the changing environment.

It’s an important time to reflect on and remember what your goals and priorities are and develop a road map for getting there.

4. Reviewing your IT systems - We’ve come a long way since the days of spending hours on end hole punching, organising and filing all your documents and receipts.

It’s amazing that technology now allows us to manage all of these time consuming tasks with a click of a finger but it’s no lie that sometimes this can leave your online files looking quite unorganised especially if you have multiple users working on the same system. Making sure you’re working with a secure system is extremely important when working with confidential information. Are your systems up to standards? Wrong Way Go Back! - Label? Or Roadmap?

Can you imagine, you are driving in Victoria, but you have been given a roadmap of NSW and no one has told you? The road does not match, the signs do not match, and the landmarks do not match, try as you may, you cannot get to your destination. This sparks uncertainty, fear, anxiousness, selfdoubt, and hopelessness hitting wrong turns every way you go!

Just like going down the wrong side on to a freeway our bodies and brains can be the same. If we did not have the road signage, filter lanes and traffic lights on the road how would we know where we are? Where were we going?

And if it were safe to go? - it would be dangerous and chaotic!

Have you ever put in an address into the GPS in your car and then put the same address into your phone and they come up with completely different route options? Or found that your GPS in your car needs updating because the roads have changed, or the technology has changed?

Like maps we have roadblocks, deadend streets, roadworks, no U turns, and unpredictable accidents on the roads ahead.

Now imagine that your brain (neurology), emotions, and thinking have been given one map (internally) and you have been given another map (externally); they do not match and are full of expectations and confusion.

You seem to never reach your ideal or potential, there is a part of you shouting to be seen and understood, you struggle to meet others expectation of you and your world is filled with uncertainty, fear, trauma, anxiousness, self-doubt, hopelessness and many other emotions, negative self-talk and limiting beliefs.

Having worked with many adults and children that have road maps that are wrong for them, I often see that misunderstood children become misunderstood adults. They live their lives thinking something its wrong with them, they do not fit in, they are unintelligent, they have shamed themselves their entire life. They struggle to reach their potential or understand why they cannot be like other people. They are unable

to tackle tasks or goals the same way others do. They spent most of their lives in fight and flight mode and they do not even know it.

By not fully understanding ourselves, how we are made up and not having the right roadmap we can be in just as much internal chaos and in danger of never reaching out truest potential.

I’ve had many conversations and gone on many adventures to help see individual’s truest self, I often come across resistance, defence, self-shaming, fear and blaming when a person thinks they or their child are going to be ‘labelled’.

What if's it is not a label? What if it the key to unlocking the potential inside? What if it is a way to help you or your child to experience the world with more joy?

Less fear? More understanding? Less selfshaming?

By challenging our thinking and see the things that makes us uniquely us is part of our individual road map rather than a label that is limiting and restrictive opens up to being understood or understanding others.

It opens up our thinking to being curious about ourselves or our child’s behaviour, feeling and expressions of emotions. It opens up to finding a different way to be communicated with and understood.

It opens up to relief of finding the way to feel at peace with yourself or helping your child to feel more at peace with themselves, self-acceptance. It opens up to giving yourself or your child the best way to self-regulate before having a meltdown. It opens a new world of possibilities and adventures to find the right road map for your unique self and being able to share that with others so that you no longer have to meet other’s expectations and be accepted for your true self, no more hiding, no more shaming and no more being misunderstood.

So, what might a road map look like versus a label?

A label might be, for example “He’s autistic”, instantly your brain may jump to conclusions around what you know about the meaning of the word/ the label. You may have already made some presumptions about the boy, limited the boy, or even dismissed his potential by limiting him to the label.

A road map may look like, but not limited

to, “I wonder what this means for him?”. “I wonder what he needs?”. “I wonder if he gets sensory over stimulation”. “I wonder does he need some quiet time during the day to help his brain calm”.

Curiosity is key to noticing an individual’s way of seeing and navigating the world.

If a young child is pacing around a room or ‘fidgeting’, are they disrespecting the rules, being ‘naughty’ or are they doing their best to self-regulate in a situation they are finding over stimulating? Most times you find this is self- regulation, so what do you need to do with you thinking to see it? What might the child need in his road map prior to pacing around/ self-regulating? What might they need when they get to this point?” – told off for not sitting? Shaming because they are not doing what other kids are doing?

Understanding? Compassion? A quiet space for a short time? The freedom to be able to pace/ regulate?

Discovering the best way to communicate, a child might seem like they are not listening, do they need telling off or shaming? Understanding?

They may also have an auditory processing roadblock. This child may need you to get in proximity, be facing you and looking at your face to know that you are talking to them giving short concise communication. It can be hard for a child with auditory processing challenges to decipher noise and direct communication, often they will close down within themselves to be able to regulate being in a noisy environment.

Once you discover what makes you YOU or what makes your child their unique self, you help build the confidence, selfesteem, acceptance, being understood and so much more. This helps you or your child to start to navigate how to get to your/ their potential what tools and directions you or they need to achieve goals. You can see and understand your map and explain it to others empower your child to do the same.

Preparing for Breastfeeding Success LACTATION CONSULTANT

It is said that preparation is the key to success but how do you best prepare for breastfeeding? For something you have never experienced before? For learning a new skill that you cannot practice ahead of time? And how do set yourself up for success when there are so many potential roadblocks and variables, which you cannot predict?

Breastfeeding is a learned skill, that improves with practice and is empowered by knowledge. Many of today’s new mums do not have the benefit of having observed other women work through the learning process of early breastfeeding and seen how common issues can be resolved. In our society today, most women who give birth will have never held a newborn baby before, never changed a nappy or burped a baby. Never bathed or dressed a baby, settled a baby to sleep or seen a baby breastfeed up close and personal.

What we know from the data is that many women run into difficulties with breastfeeding in the early weeks. In Australia most women want to try breastfeeding. Approximately 92% of mothers start out breastfeeding after birth, however by 6 months of age, the number of women exclusively breastfeeding has reduced to just 14%. Many mums report that early breastfeeding is much harder than they had expected. What are the factors that seperate those that go on to long term breastfeeding success and those that don’t?

Breastfeeding takes both practice and perseverance. Research clearly tells us is that women who report higher rates of self-efficacy have better breastfeeding outcomes, both in terms of initiation and duration. In other words, women who feel confident about their ability to face challenges with determination and who have a wider plan to overcome obstacles, are more likely to breastfeed and to stick at it for longer. They are prepared to work hard and are open to testing different ideas and suggestions as needed. And if things don’t work out, they are more likely to blame external circumstances rather than blame themselves.

Learning a new skill is not always easy, but approaching the task with positive

expectation, rather than fear and selfdoubt, is really important. So, in preparing to breastfeed, mums will benefit firstly by having a realistic and positive attitude towards it and a mindset to trust their body and to work at it, even if things don’t turn out as easy as she expected.

In order to feel positive and empowered, women need to be informed and they need appropriate support from those around them.

Mothers want to be informed about what to expect. Attending breastfeeding education classes through the Australian Breastfeeding Association (available online) is an excellent way to gain information and knowledge. Classes both educate and empower mothers.

They teach her important skills such as how to identify her baby’s feeding cues, how to latch and position her baby at the breast and how to know if her baby is getting enough milk. Learning as much as she can before the arrival of her baby will help her confidence.

Getting in touch with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is another great way to get informed. Even before the birth of her baby, it’s a good idea to make contact with her local lactation consultant so that she can build a connection and know exactly where to turn once her baby arrives. After her baby is born, she will benefit from having the sort of personalised, one-on-one, hands-on help that a lactation consultant can provide.

Mothers also need appropriate support, and lots of it. This can come from many sources; her health care professionals, her partner, her own mother and friends as well as her wider family, co-workers and society at large. Reading, discussing and asking questions will allow the expectant mother time to think about what it might be like, how she may respond to the challenges of breastfeeding and what sort of emotional and practical support she would prefer. She needs to be able to ask questions and to receive reassurance. In particular, mothers want their health care professionals to have good breastfeeding knowledge, to have an “authentic presence”, to listen well, to give positive reflection to their emotions and to provide practical suggestions and advice.

Being informed, supported and connected with a skilled lactation consultant can be invaluable in getting mum and baby off to the best possible start and avoiding many of the pitfalls that are common in the early months and set them up for long term breastfeeding success.

How Crossflow In Your Home Could Save You Money ARCHITECT

Many people don’t think about crossflow as they turn on the heating or air conditioning. However, the advantage of making your home more comfortable may not seem so pleasant when the gas and electricity bills arrive!

What if there was a better, greener and cheaper way to manage temperature conditions?

Air flow Ventilation in buildings removes stale air, moderates inside temperatures and creates air movement which improves the comfort of everyone inside your home.

Cross ventilation is when wind enters through a window or door, allowing air to flow directly through the house and out through an opening on the other side.

A good way to plan for effective cross ventilation is to know the prevailing wind direction where you intend to build your home. Likewise, the position and size of your vents, windows and doors, as well as the path between the different sides of the house, make a big difference to how effectively you can cross ventilate your home.

Is there an ideal positioning? Simply opening the doors in the house would allow air to get around, especially when the air enters the house directly from the front door. It also reduces the accumulation of moisture, odours and gases that can build up. A lack of cross ventilation can lead to rotting timbers and mould due to rising humidity.

Living in Melbourne means that we need to both heat our homes in the winter and cool them in summer. Cross flow ventilation is most effective when you open the window that is receiving a gentler breeze than the window on the opposite wall. This produces a vacuum effect and will enhance air flow. In some cases, especially where wind is unpredictable or blowing on an imperfect angle, wind ventilation can be improved by directing wind into the home using wing walls and casement windows.

Awnings can also help when weather conditions or poor air quality induces you to keep the windows and doors closed.

Ideal cross ventilation If not properly ventilated, your roof space could trap as much as 10°C in excess heat, and radiate that back into your home through the ceiling. Installing winddriven ventilation mechanisms like soffit vents, ridge vents and whirlybirds, will do a great deal to allow this heat to escape, and to lower the overall temperature inside. Installing roof-mounted vent mechanisms will work even when there

North-facing windows, receiving the most amount of sun in all seasons, can be easily shaded from the high summer sun to help keep the house cool. Ideally, the glazing area should be between 10–25% of the floor area of the room.

East and west facing windows receive little sunlight in winter, autumn and spring, but excessive sunlight in summer. Keep these windows small and well-shaded, particularly those facing west if this does not compromise ventilation.

Alternatively, consider using high performance glazing such as low-e or toned glass.

South facing windows receive no direct sunlight in winter and only early morning and late afternoon sunlight in summer. Windows should be kept small to retain warmth; however, they can be extremely useful for passive cooling as part of cross ventilation as cooling breezes in summer usually come from the south.

How an architect can help If you are building a new home or renovating, call in an architect before you start. Architects will incorporate cross ventilation as part of their plans for your new home or renovations. They will aim for direct flow paths from rear to front and from side to side in the main living space.

Entry door can be fitted with openable highlight windows to allow airflow with privacy. A raised ceiling in the kitchen with openable windows will allow warm air to be drawn up and out of the home.

Stairwell can also have openable windows to provide the same effect.

It’s Party time!

I see some fairly simple but frequent mistakes made. I think it may be because a number of Contractors are a little reluctant to ask basic questions for fear of looking silly or ignorant. That being said, it would be better to ask a basic question and be thought of as silly, rather than remaining silent and lose a boatload of money when a claim arises that could have been covered but was not; or which might have been avoided with simple measures.

Following that line of thought, you may change some business practices to avoid a loss if you understand the limitations of your policy, which again is a lot easier once you understand your policy conditions, or once you chose a policy which fits your business well.

In a PL Policy (Public and Products Liability policy) you are the First Party, and the Third Party is your client or a member of the public. If the insuring clause says it will pay losses for which you are liable to a Third Party, it means you are not able to claim first party losses like materials used or faulty labour. If for instance you paint a house the wrong colour it is up to you to fix it at your own cost, and you may not claim the cost of that from your Public and Products Liability insurer. If you accidentally drop your ladder and

do $10k worth of damage to the clients home, that would be covered, as the damage is to the third party’s property and you would be liable. Many contractors show genuine surprise when this is explained to them which tells me this product is not well understood. A little good advice can easily fix this, and as insurance can be complicated a broker is the best person for the job.

Cover for injury to subcontractors as part of your PL is also often overlooked as an area that you should do your best to understand. This means that Workcover will pay for treatment and rehabilitation of the subcontractor and then seek to recover all costs, and often additional anticipated ongoing costs from your insurer. This type of claim may be subject to a $25,000 excess on your PL policy depending who you are insured with. At this point, I am hoping you will stop to read your current policy wording to see if this applies to you! I also hope you will have a think about site inductions and safety procedures, and about ensuring your subcontractors actually have Workcover before letting them on your

Favourite Ways To Make Coffee COMMERCIAL COFFEE MACHINE

There are probably as many ways of serving coffee as there are countries that grow the beans. Here are some of the most popular varieties available.

Black and mostly black An espresso, also known as a short black, consists of a 30 ml shot of coffee made from 7 grams of coffee, straight from the machine served in a 60 ml porcelain cup. A single origin espresso uses coffee bean from a single origin, rather than one blended from various regions.

A double shot espresso is the same as an espresso but with two shots. A double shot can be made by re-pouring hot water over the single shot or using a double basket (holding 14 grams of coffee) but extracted in the same timeframe (30 seconds) to produce 60 ml of coffee.

Ristrettos are the same as an espresso shot, but only using the first half of the espresso shot (15 ml) which is sweeter.

A long black is a typically Australian variation that is also found in New Zealand. Add 100–180 mls of water over an espresso (or double espresso) shot.

Don’t add extra water to the espresso shot as you will eliminate the crema.

‘Macchiato’ is an Italian word that means ‘marked’ or ‘stained’. This refers to the teaspoon of frothy, steamed milk that ‘stains’ the espresso. About 1–2 teaspoons of steamed milk and a bit of foam are poured on top of an espresso shot. A macchiato is a good choice for coffee lovers who want something stronger than a cappuccino but not the hit of an espresso. You can relish the coffee and the sweet milk, all in one sip, while also enjoying the foam and body of the drink.

Just add milk Australia’s favourite coffee is the flat white – and it was invented in Australia in the 1980s, though New Zealand also makes a claim of origin. Aussies didn’t want the mountains of foam that came with cappuccinos of the time so they asked for their coffees to be made white but ‘flat’. A flat white traditionally features two shots of coffee to which a small layer of steamed, somewhat frothed milk is added. It is traditionally served in a

250 ml porcelain cup. A flat white is smaller than a latte and usually contains more espresso. Because it has less milk, you can fully experience the flavour of the beans.

As its name suggests, the latte is similar to a flat white, but is more milky (because there is less coffee). Invented in the US, it is usually served in a glass and topped with a small amount of foam, around 5 mm. in Italy, a caffè latte is usually a very milky breakfast drink made with a shot of coffee from a stovetop espresso maker.

It can be made with one or two shots of coffee.

Cappuccinos are the oldest variation of coffee. The name ‘cappuccino’ comes from a Capuchin friar who supposedly invented it; the colour of the friars’ habits matched the colour of the beverage when milk is added in small portions.

The original cappuccino was made by the Austrians when they added cream and spices to coffee in the 18th century.

The Italian cappuccino seems to have come from Viennese-style cafes in Italian areas controlled by the AustroHungarian empire. Espresso machines became widespread during the 1950s, and cappuccino were now made from espresso and frothed milk. A cappuccino is made with one or two shots of espresso.

This is poured into the bottom of the cup, followed by a similar amount of

hot milk, which is prepared by heating and texturing the milk using an espresso machine steam wand. The top third of the drink consists of milk foam dusted with chocolate or cinnamon, giving rise to decorative coffee art. It is typically smaller in volume than a latte, with a thicker layer of microfoam.

Another popular coffee variety is the piccolo, an espresso shot with 90ml of steamed milk, sometimes ordered as a double shot macchiato.

How The 2021-22 Federal Budget Is Supporting Women FINANCIAL PLANNING

The safety and economic security of women was a prominent theme for the 2021-22 Federal Budget. Some of the announcements were as follows: Childcare Subsidy The Childcare Subsidy percentage for families with multiple children aged 5 and under in childcare has been announced to commence from 11 July 2022. This measure, if passed, will see an increase in the subsidy percentage by 30% for the second and subsequent child/ren, but this will be capped at no more than 95%.

Women Only Scholarships The Government will offer scholarships to encourage women into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

Increased Workforce Participation The Government seeks to remove more barriers for women who wish to re-enter the workforce after career breaks. They will provide more career opportunities and career pathways for women.

Equitable household distribution after divorce

The Government proposes to provide assistance to lawyers to provide mediation services to those parties with assets less than $500,000 will have those assets distributed fairly after separation.

Reviewing denied JobKeeper or Cash Flow Boost receipts A recent report into the ATO's administration of JobKeeper and Cash Flow Boost payments has uncovered situations where the ATO has incorrectly denied entities access to the stimulus payments. Some new businesses were informed that they were ineligible due to not having informed the ATO of any taxable supplies prior to the commencement date of 12 March 2020. However, the report acknowledges that this was misinterpreted by the ATO. In particular, the modified definition of taxable supply to include financial supplies. Originally, the report states that the ATO was not going to chase up businesses who may have been incorrectly determined to be ineligible. However, the ATO has recently stated that they will be reviewing all decisions where the Commissioner's discretion was not granted. Any affected clients of yours are likely to be contacted by the end of June 2021.

These payments will be received via the Australian Apprentices Incentives Program and there is no longer a maximum number of available places. This program currently services employers by providing cash payments when apprentices meet certain targets. Another program

Celebrating Connections In Park Orchards It was smiles all round when the Park Orchards Community House and Learning Centre held a community celebration to bring people back together after lockdown.

“We wanted to give people a chance to connect with others in the community.

The event was a way for people of all ages to make new friends, do a tour of the centre and find out what’s on offer.

The event was a great success with all the fun ingredients including face painting, farm animals, sausage sizzle and a food truck. Over 100 people attended, with ages ranging from 1 to 80.

“There’s been many new families come to the area, so it was an easy way for adults and children to meet and have a laugh. The children loved petting the farm animals and having their faces painted.

Pauline Fyffe, Community House Centre Manager said it was important to engage people and make them feel welcome.

“It was great to also see a lot of senior residents come along. We’re trying to prevent isolation and offer a place for

lifelong learning with lots of courses and activities for all ages on offer.

“It’s nice to think that people could go home after the event and know they’re not alone - they can be part of the community and join us if they want to connect and take part.

“We’ve now had families and individuals return to the centre after being away for some time. They have re-enrolled into some of our programs and the centre is now buzzing again. “ The event was funded by Manningham’s community-led Placemaking initiative.

Celebrating Eid al-Fitr in Manningham shared to celebrate the end of the 30 days of fasting, including a special ‘Kahk-Eid cookie’.

Marwa Mostafa and Ceza Omar helped organise the event and said the intention was to bring people together.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a time when family and friends come together and celebrate the breaking of the fast.

“We wanted to hold a community gathering that would make people feel happy, so we applied to Manningham for funding under the Placemaking project,” Ms Mostafa said.

“We have many people in our community who live on their own or are newcomers, so we wanted to get them together.

On 22 May, our local Islamic community gathered at the Ajani Centre to celebrate Eid al-Fitr after completing a month of prayer, devotion and self-control. The event was extremely popular and fully booked; with over 140 people attending and 20 families on the wait list.

“Every year it is important to gather with family and friends. Most people have family members overseas in Egypt, Sudan or Jordan and haven’t seen them for two or three years. This event was a good way for them to avoid isolation, especially after lockdown.

Mechanics’ Hall Brings Harmony To Warrandyte Community Nothing connects a community more than a local hall that offers good music, theatre and the opportunity to catch up with others.

On Saturday 22 May, the Warrandyte Mechanics’ Institute and Arts Association provided a free community arts event after securing funding from the Manningham Placemaking project.

Adrian Rice, Chairman of the Warrandyte Mechanics’ Institute said they were delighted to bring the arts to the Warrandyte community.

“We have a strong commitment to live music and the arts, so it was great to make use of the Mechanics’ Institute Hall again and provide this free community event.

“We had a full house with 80 people enjoying music from duet Jay Smith and MTonesZ, a one-act play ‘Time Flies,’ and local A’capella group ‘The Vocal Agents.’

“It demonstrates to the community what we’re capable of and the need to have regular music events in the hall.”

“We were pleased to see the event boosted business to the surrounding cafes and restaurants which were full of patrons dining and enjoying each other’s company.

The event was funded by Manningham’s community-led Placemaking initiative.

“Music, theatre and the arts are a key feature of Warrandyte and this event gave local performers an opportunity to once again share their craft with the community.”

Manningham has started campaign to end ageism towards older people, after Council endorsed the Tackling Ageism Together: EveryAGE Counts in Melbourne’s East campaign in its last Council Meeting.

Challenging the stereotypes of older people, the campaign encourages people to speak up and take action. All nine councillors signed The Pledge to stand for a world without ageism.

Manningham Mayor Cr Andrew Conlon said the last Census found there was a higher proportion of people aged over 60 in Manningham than in Greater Melbourne.

“While ageism can affect people of all ages, when it’s aimed towards older people, it often comes from negative attitudes and beliefs,” he said.

“It is unfortunate ageism towards olderpeople is not often talked about.

“It is far more widespread than most of us realise and is fuelled by living in a society where youth is revered and old age is feared.”

The campaign aims to start a conversation about ageism and change our attitudes about older people and getting older.

Ageism is stereotyping, discrimination and mistreatment based solely on a person’s age. When directed towards older people, it affects the confidence, quality of life, job prospects, health andself-esteem of many, and in its extreme, can be a contributing factor in elder abuse.

Tackling Ageism Together: EveryAGE

Counts in Melbourne’s East is a joint campaign with six other eastern metropolitan councils including Boroondara, Knox, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges. BY VAL FEBBO Despite a quick 53-day turnaround between the most recent Bowls Premier League and the impending BPL13 at Brisbane’s Club Pine Rivers, four team changes have been made in preparation form April 20-23, 2021.

The Perth Suns, Adelaide Pioneers, Murray Steamers and the Brisbane Pirates have all announced alterations to their squads for the second of three BPL tournaments this year.

As previously revealed, Perth will bring in Cody Packer and Kristina Krstic to replace Lee Schraner and Genevieve Delves, with Ray Pearse remaining from Moama.

After finishing as runner-up last time out, the Pioneers have added Katelyn Inch to their roster, alongside reigning MVP Scott Thulborn and BCiB Jackaroo Wayne Ruediger, with Rebecca Van Asch stepping aside for this edition.

The host team’s Brisbane Pirates have regained the experienced head of Kelsey Cottrell, who replaces young superstar Kira Bourke.

Jeremy Henry and Aaron Hewson will round out the Pirates camp, who will aim to get back into the finals, after narrowly missing out on the Murray.

The defending champions Tweed Heads, three-time winners Sydney Lions and both Melbourne franchises, the Pulse and the Roys, go into BPL13 with an unchanged line-up.

Aaron Teys, Chloe Stewart and Corey Wedlock will return for the Ospreys, while Aron Sherriff, Ben Twist and Karen Murphy complete the famous Sydney Lions trio.

The top of the table Pulse retain Gary Kelly, Barrie Lester and Ellen Ryan, while the Roys will continue its quest for a maiden title with familiar combatants Matthew Flapper, Aaron Wilson and Carla Krizanic.

VICTORIA WINS RSL NATIONAL LAWN BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP Victoria has won the 53RD National RSL Lawn Bowls Championship, successfully winning all Tests at the National RSL Bowls Carnival in Sydney ,at the Cabramatta Bowling Club on 28th to 30th April 2021.

This carnival is run on an annual basis, vying for the Jack Hamilton VC trophy, with each of the states hosting the event on a rotational basis. Perth is host for the 54th National Carnival in April 2022.

Twenty players in five rinks of four, as selected by their respective state bodies, compete in 5 tests over two and a half days in fierce but friendly competition.

This competition also allows all participants to renew old acquaintances and to create new and lasting friendships with all the people who have served our country with courage, dignity and pride.

Congratulations to all Victoria’s players for a magnificent effort.

This event is open to full service RSL members only, but Victorian RSL Lawn Bowls conducts a few RSL State events open to all Affiliate and Service members. These include: * RSL State fours and triples championships, * ANZAC Day Tournament and the Challenge Day tournament, * Duke of Edinburgh Shield. * Further news on the Edinburgh Shield in next edition.

Present Find Card You are required to present your Find Card at any participating businesses if you wish to secure the discount or goods/service being offered.

Authentication Code & Customer Signature All Find Cards must display an Authentication Code and a members signature to be deemed VALID. If your Find Cards does not display your signature and the correct code, the business can refuse to provide the discount offer advertised. You will receive your Authentication code after registering your Find Card.

Valid Find Cards have four folds and contain six different categories. Valid Find Cards will have its Regions logo sticker placed in the circle at the back and has an Authentication code display in front of the Find Cards

NOT VALID

Find Cards that DO NOT display its Regions Sticker in the circle at the back and DO NOT display an Authentocation code in front of the Find Card are INVALID. They will not be accepted at any participating businesses. Also, your signature must be present. You may be asked to present ID to verify that Find Card belongs to you.

Present the Find Card and ID prior to paying bill. Card is Non-Transferable. Each offer corresponds to a number on the card. Number will be crossed off once offer used. This is not a credit or charge card.
