About the Find Geelong

The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong.

We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free.

We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month.

We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area.

To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists.

With food and petrol prices on the rise and now interest rates putting pressure on new homeowners, people are starting to find it hard to put food on the table.

Already, we are hearing stories of families having to go without. With likely interest rate rises continuing to occur this will place even more pressure on those families already struggling to obtain the essentials they require to get by on a day-to-day basis.

An Australian green hydrogen company has attracted global investors to fast-track its hydrogen electrolyser technology.

The $42.5 million investment injection will put Hysata on the path to gigawatt-scale manufacturing of the equipment and grow the team in NSW, the company said on Tuesday.

The funding will be used to hire more staff and develop a pilot manufacturing plant for an electrolyser the company says will process the world’s lowest-cost green hydrogen.

Liquid hydrogen is yet to be proven as a commercially viable alternative fuel.

BlueScope’s venture capital arm said it was keen to invest in Australian technologies coming out of local communities, with Hysata born in the Illawarra.

by Mayor Peter Murrihy Geelong has a very long and unique and wonderful history.

It is something we all pride ourselves on as members of the Greater Geelong community and yet we also continue to learn more about what our shared history looks like.

The saying goes that Australia was built on the sheep’s back, and Geelong certainly benefited from the wool industry for a very long time.

That chapter of our past has been shared in great detail at the National Wool Museum since it opened to great acclaim back in 1988.

It is also true that Geelong has so much more in its past to reflect on.

At the most recent Council meeting, Councillors endorsed a 30-year vision for the National Wool Museum to extend its focus beyond this singular facet of our history to represent the broader story of Geelong.

This purpose of the vision is to widen the scope of the Museum so that it reflects our region’s 60,000-year living culture and history – from First Nations People to the emerging and advanced industries of today.

This is an exciting step towards expanding the Museum so that it can become a place that everyone can enjoy.

Independent analysis has shown that the expanded vision has the potential to deliver a net benefit of up to $72 million to the region over a 30-year period.

The story of wool and the related collections will remain a core component of the Museum and the new vision will build on its success and legacy.

But members of our community have told us they want to experience and understand more about Geelong’s unique culture and shared future.

The City will explore opportunities for the reimagined and expanded museum, including a potential development of the Dennys Lascelles Wool Stores to house Council’s diverse art and heritage collection.

This comprises approximately 20,000 items valued at nearly $20 million.

Cats

Curfew

There appears to be a growing trend amongst Melbourne councils to bring in stricter policies when it comes to cat ownership. In April 2022, Knox Council implemented a 24/7 ban on domestic cats leaving their owner’s property.

There will be a 6 month grace period where only warnings will be issued but then this will change to a $91 fine for first time offences, then jump to $545 for subsequent breaches starting in October 2022.

In July 2023, Bass Coast Shire Council will also implement a 24/7 ban on cats straying from their owners property. They intend to have a 12 month education drive in the lead up to this ban.

Manningham Council have announced that they will be implementing a trial 24/7 ban but have not yet announced a date for this. The general consensus for this growing trend is to protect the wildlife with a side note about protecting the cats themselves from injury and illness.

Protecting the wildlife is important and a night curfew will help with this, but I think it is up to the cat’s owner to worry about illness and injury. However, what about the consequences? Many outdoor cats help to keep the rodent population down.

Will we suddenly see a spike in rats and mice throughout these Councils and neighbouring councils, potentially causing much bigger problems?

There doesn’t appear to have been much thought given as to how local households will be able to implement this. Simply building a cat run or enclosing your property in a high fence will be costly (and potentially unsightly) and prohibit many low-income families from doing this. Locking cats up, particularly older cats that are used to being outside seems cruel and is no better than locking up a wild animal in a cage at the zoo. Families who are renting will likely be unable to get permission from their landlord to build an enclosure as well. Will this lead to a lot of cats having to be rehomed because the families can’t afford to catproof their property?

As I am sure you can guess, I do have a cat. She is a beautiful tortoiseshell DMH who loves being outside as well as inside. We have a number of cats in our street, and once they established their pecking order, they all seem to get on really well and we quite often find one or two other cats sitting near or in our front yard a couple of metres from our cat. Although they don’t sit together, it appears they still like the company of each other. We ensure our cat comes inside overnight, as do our neighbours and often that means she has to come in by 4pm in the summer otherwise she hides from us so she can stay out. Our house also doesn’t get a lot of sunshine inside throughout the day so she would miss out on that precious light if we were to keep her in 24/7.

A newly discovered 401-metre cave measuring the equivalent of three Sydney Harbour Bridges has set a record as the deepest in Australia.

An elite team of cavers from the Southern Tasmanian Caverneers discovered the cave – which has been named Delta Variant – on Saturday, after 14 hours underground and following six months of preparation.

It is connected to Tasmania’s Niggly and Growling Swallet cave system, northwest of Hobart. I was definitely nervous, you feel aware of your own mortality,” team member Ciara Smart said.

“Although you know you’re safe, it’s very

Financial Planning Complaints Trending Down

With all the changes that have occurred in the financial planning profession, it was good to note that there was nearly a 50% reduction in complaints in the 2022 FY compared to the 2021 FY relating to ‘Failure to act in the client’s best interests’ and ‘Inappropriate advice’.

The evidence from AFCA (the external resolution board that handles financial planning complaints) provides us with a clear picture: The changes that have occurred over the past few years e.g. introduction of the FASEA Code of Ethics and increased education standards, have indeed had a positive impact for consumers.

I believe we are moving in the right direction as a profession.

Fraser Island to go the way of Ayers Rock Nick Gibbs

It’s hoped Fraser Island will follow the lead of Uluru and only be known by it’s Indigenous name, as the Queensland government flags an official name change.

The proposal will take a step forward this week as two months of public consultation begin, Resources Minister Scott Stewart said on Wednesday.

He hopes the process will lead to the Indigenous name of K’gari entering the common vernacular in the same way Uluru has replaced Ayers Rock.

“No one calls it Ayers Rock any more, they call it Uluru, and it’s about respecting our First Nations people, and about respecting the connection they have with this land,” Mr Stewart said.

“(For) 60,000 years they’ve been calling it K’gari, I think it’s about time we started to do exactly the same.”

The reinstatement of K’gari as the island’s name has been a long time coming, chair of the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation Aunty Gayle Minniecon said.

“It means so much to the Butchulla people,” she said.

“K’gari means paradise in the Butchulla language and as a popular destination for its natural beauty, is a much more fitting name for such an iconic place,” Ms Scanlon said.

“The name Fraser Island is culturally inappropriate – it is a tribute to Eliza Fraser, a woman whose narrative directly led to the massacre and dispossession of the Butchulla people.”

“For us it’s about respect for our people.

It’s important for us to let our ancestors know that our culture is still strong and we continue to care for our country.”

K’gari was originally known by Europeans as Great Sandy Island before it was changed to Fraser Island after Scotswoman Eliza Fraser was shipwrecked there in 1836.

The consultation follows the island’s world heritage area being renamed K’gari last year, Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said

While the World Heritage Area became K’gari last year, the official place name for the world’s largest sand island had yet to change.

Sole Traders – the ATO will now pass information on to Credit providers ACCOUNTANT

If you are a sole trader, you have not had to worry too much about any debts owing to the ATO. You would simply be placed on a payment plan and pay off what you can when you can. However, this is has now changed and the ATO is taking a harder stance against those business owners who owe money to the ATO. The ATO will now inform credit provides of debts larger than $100,000. This will have an impact on sole traders and partners seeking any type of finance e.g., home loan, investment loan or car finance, in the future.

General manager of technical policy at the IPA, Tony Greco, said the move could provide a more even playing field for businesses.

“There are pluses and minuses, the pluses are it makes it more transparent that the market and all credit providers, including trade credit, get to see what level of debt the business has and it provides an extra impetus to that client to engage with the tax office,” said Mr Greco.

“If you’ve got one business compliant and another not compliant then that’s an unfair advantage, so it promotes fairness in the tax system.”

The change applies only to sole traders with ATO debts that meet certain criteria.

“The rules are currently that it has to be over $100,000 and has to be related to a business debt and it also has to be when the business is basically not responding to current attempts to put it on the payment plan or to pay it,” said Mr Greco.

“If you’ve got one business compliant and another not compliant then that’s an unfair advantage, so it promotes fairness in the tax system.”

The change applies only to sole traders with ATO debts that meet certain criteria.

“The rules are currently that it has to be over $100,000 and has to be related to a business debt and it also has to be when

The ATO said that a business or sole trader effectively engaging with it would not be subject to CRB referral, even if the debt exceeded $100,000.

The ATO said effective engagement involved having: •

A payment plan and complying with the terms of the arrangement

•

An application for release from the tax debt

•

An active objection against a tax decision to which the debt related

•

An active review with the AAT or an active appeal to the court

•

An active review with the AAT of a reviewable decision that might affect the amount of a non-complying superannuation fund’s tax debt with the relevant regulator

•

An active complaint with the IGTO in relation to the tax debt.

Mr Greco said the ATO used the ability to disclose tax debt information to CRBs as a tool to influence businesses to take their debt seriously.

“A lot of businesses treat the ATO as the lender of last resort so just don’t pay it,” he said. “When money becomes tight businesses just stop paying one of their creditors, and the easiest one is the ATO. “A credit rating is very important if you are highly leveraged, therefore this ability to provide this information so all can see is the thing that sometimes gets people to take note of the debt because it starts to impact their ability to finance their operations.”

Mr Greco said the IPA wanted to see the ATO customise its approach for each business.

Rental properties – An ATO focus area for 2022 returns

The ATO has issued a release stating that rental properties are one of its four main focus areas for the 2022 returns now being submitted. The ATO urged rental property owners to ensure they carefully review their records before declaring income or claiming deductions. The release highlights common pitfalls, including the importance of keeping adequate records.

Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh noted that the ATO’s Random Enquiry Program found that nine out of 10 tax returns that reported rental income contained at least one error. This is despite most of those property owners being assisted by a registered tax agent. While tax agents can only work with the information they gather from clients, the ATO said it expects agents to ask a few extra questions to ensure their client’s return is completed correctly.

Why Should Leaders Exude Confidence?

According to Eleanor Roosevelt, American political figure, diplomat, and activist, “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader; a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves.” But I bet any employee wouldn’t feel good if their leader doesn’t show confidence in making decisions.

The leader’s behaviour affects how the team thinks and decides. If a boss is lazy and doesn’t make decisions confidently, expect chaos in the team. But if the boss knows what he or she is doing, work would be like a walk in the park for the employees (but not all the time!).

A timid and self-doubting leader will result in uncertain situations and confuse members. However, a confident leader will develop a group of independent, creative minds with a clear intention of what they want to achieve as a team.

After all, apart from this, how can confident leaders positively affect the organisation?

Confidence improves your decision-making process Making decisions should be a collaborative effort and open to any suggestions. But let’s be honest, the boss (yes, that’s you) always has the final say.

A leader will face numerous decisionmaking situations, and most of these would have a huge impact on the team.

Confidence is the person’s ability to create a decision without being stressed and anxious while understanding the possible results or consequences and holding accountability for this decision.

Confidence should not be based on emotions but on factual judgments. Have you done enough research? Were you able to analyse the situation carefully?

Are you going to accept the result regardless of the outcome? Do I hear a ‘yes’? Good! These are the primary questions you should ask yourself before creating a critical decision.

How to Paint metal surfaces

Like all painting, preparation is the key to success. Here are a few handy tips for getting the best appearance and protection for the metal surfaces around the home or office.

1.

Clean the metal surface

Using sandpaper or another gentle scraping tool, remove all dust, dirt, debris and grease. A mild detergent should be sufficient but for more persistent deposits, mineral spirits will do the trick. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and leave to dry thoroughly. Don’t use water as it doesn’t clean metal effectively.

2.

Get rid of peeling or loose paint

This applies to preparing all surfaces for painting – get rid of old paint that is loose or peeling. Otherwise, the new paint won’t stick. Use a hand wire brush, a scraper or sandpaper and gently sand back. Too much pressure and the metal surface may be gouged, leading to an uneven finish.

Some people like to use power tools for this part of the cleaning process but beware – this method may end up polishing the metal surface, leaving nothing for the new paint to adhere to.

You will need to rub a scuffing pad along the metal surface; the pads will lightly scratch the surface, allowing the primer to stick.

3.

Remove the rust

Rust is a sign that the metal is not totally sound. You may need to replace the roof or frames if there is structural damage.

If there is rust in just a few places, apply a high-quality primer with rust-inhibiting properties by brushing or sanding.

Painting over rust will damage the metal paint by causing it to rust as well.

4.

Use the appropriate primer

Check that the primer you choose is compatible with the paint you’ve selected. Follow the instructions on the label as different primers have differing drying times.

Water-based primers are not appropriate for metal surfaces but there are many other options. Rust-inhibiter primers, iron oxide primers and galvanised primers are more suitable, depending on what you are painting.

Apply the primer immediately after the previous surface preparation. This will help prevent flash rusting or dust accumulating. If what you are painting is outdoors (for example, roofs, furniture or sheds), a second coat of primer will add an extra layer of protection against oxidisation.

Whenever you are painting metal surfaces, make sure you protect yourself.

Wear a dust mask or respirator, protective goggles and gloves. Work in a well ventilated area – outdoors if possible. If you use power tools (for instance, when getting rid of rust), insert quality ear plugs to protect your hearing.

Paint the surface

Metal paints come in oil-based and water-based brush-on or spray-can versions. Oil-based paint is trickier to work with but the results are last longer. Waterbased acrylic paints can be easier to apply but may be difficult to find in spray form for exterior use.

The easiest way to paint metal surfaces is with spray paint. (However, though it’s faster and easier, it doesn’t create as firm a finish.) If you decide to spray paint, hold the can 15 to 30 centimetres away from the metal surface – this prevents the paint from pooling. Using a long sweeping motion, spray whatever it is you want to paint. (Don’t be tempted to hold the can in one place.) If you notice excessive dripping, wipe everything clean and

Financial Reports for Not for Profits BOOKKEEPER

Profit & Loss – which represents the income and expenses for the reporting period (ie the previous month or quarter) and for the period beginning at NFP’s financial year to the end of the reporting period

•

Balance Sheets – which represents the value of assets and liabilities on the last day of the reporting period

•

Bank Account Statements – covering the period and showing the ending balance for the period

Not for Profits (NFP) come in a range of types, sizes and purposes including, sporting groups, scouts, environmental protection societies, churches, surf lifesaving clubs. All will have money flowing in and out requiring good financial record keeping. Requirements to lodge income tax returns, lodgement of financials, lodgement of Business Activity Statements, or requirement to be audited will depend on the type of NFP, the status of the NFP and the size of the NFP. Follow this link for the ATO’s Tax basics for non-profit organisations.

In general, no matter the size or format of the NFP, they will need to keep up to date financial records that may be accessed by their membership, reported to their Committee of Management and potentially lodged with a relevant body.

In the dim dark past financials were commonly kept in handwritten ledger books, receipts were written by hand and cash & cheques were the only way to receive or pay out money.

Today we have easy access to good online accounting software such as Xero or Quickbooks Online. These make it easy for a NFP to keep their financials up to date as well as prepare current financial reports. We strongly recommend that if a NFP is looking to move their bookkeeping online that they seek the assistance of a Registered Bookkeeper/BAS Agent to guide them through the setup process.

It is generally accepted that at a Committee Meeting the Treasurer presents a set of financial reports. If the Committee meets monthly, the reporting period is monthly. If the Committee meets quarterly, then the reporting period is quarterly.

The basic reports to include are:

•

Bank Account Reconciliations – showing that the bookkeeping ledger has been reconciled to the bank statement at the end of the reporting period. This will also show any deposits that have not yet made it into the bank, or any payments that have not yet left the bank (usually checks that have not cleared)

•

Transaction Ledger – a report showing ALL transactions that have occurred in the reporting period

•

Cash Flow Statement – a report that summarises the flow of cash in and out of the bank accounts for the reporting period

For simple and small NFPs, the Profit & Loss and Balance Sheets will be relatively simple and will be unlikely to show much in the way of fixed assets or loan liabilities.

Larger and more complicated NFPs will have detailed financials.

For example, a small arts group that has incorporated to benefit its members will be unlikely to own any major equipment or borrow funds to purchase large expenses. Their Profit & Loss will simply show the Revenue in and the Expenses out, and the Balance Sheet showing the balance of the bank accounts, accounts payable & accounts receivable.

A larger group such as a Surf Life Saving Club will shop multiple areas of Revenue; expenses related to the Revenue will show as Cost of Sales rather than expenses.

They will have large Fixed Assets registers cataloguing all their equipment that will be depreciated from year to year.

Above I mentioned cash and cheques.

In today’s post COVID world we see a lot less cash changing hands and cheques were well and truly losing favour with the ability to move funds around via internet banking.

Removing cash from NFPs helps to prevent fraud as well as save enormous amount of time. We recommend sporting clubs to take on a service such as Square for their face-to-face sales needs (canteen, uniform, events). The initial equipment cost is affordable, and the benefits include not having cash lying around the club rooms, or in someone’s car, or in their house; quick receipt of funds into the bank account rather than waiting for someone to deposit the cash; reduced volunteer time investment (no counting of cash, preparing deposit slips, driving to the bank, changing notes for coins, etc.).

In a recent example we assisted a Pony Club to move to be cashless late last year.

An iPad, Square® stand and terminal were bought for just over $1,000. The canteen now runs cashless; all uniforms are purchased via the Square® terminal as well. The benefits have included not worrying about a money float and having the right change; no money to count at the end of the day; and one of the best benefits has been the sales reporting and the ability to see what food items sell best. One of the other interesting effects is that now customers can tap to pay they end up spending more!

One final word about financial reporting.

As seen at the Pony Club, the Sales reporting has informed what the club chooses to sell at their canteen, rather than just winging it like they used to do pre-Square. Financials are incredibly important for Committees of Management to be able to truly track their financial performance, manage the highs and lows (remember COVID times?) and understand where their money is going, be able to budget ahead as well as set annual membership fees that cover the budget.

But, as long as you are already salary packaging one of the above Remote Area Housing Benefits, you could be saving on household fuel or energy such as gas, electricity and firewood (not motor vehicles). If you’re making the move to a remote area or country region, you could be enjoying more than just fresh air. The pivot to permanent and flexible working arrangements driven by the pandemic has caused an exodus of city dwellers seeking the good life. The Commonwealth Government offers some tax incentives for people and businesses to live and work in Remote Areas, known as Remote Area Benefits.

The idea behind these benefits is to assist employers in rural and remote areas to attract and retain staff. While the concessions were originally designed to attract more people to work in remote regions rather than seeking fortunes in cities and towns, current trends are seeing people happily head back to literal greener pastures. Because many employees have found themselves able to work remotely, there has been an influx of people populating regional locations. This has caused higher demand for property across the country resulting in higher house prices, giving even more reason for those eligible to take advantage of Remote Area Benefits.

How do Remote Area Benefits work?

If you live and work within a remote area as defined by the ATO, you could be eligible to salary package for either rent, or interest on your mortgage repayments, plus your gas and electricity bills with your pre-tax dollars. Only 50% of the value of the remote area benefits are taxable, allowing eligible employees to effectively increase the amount of their take home pay. Any Remote Area benefits made from pre-tax salary reduces the amount of tax applied to your take-home pay, so it is financially win-win.

Remote Area Housing Purchase There aren’t many ways to save on a house purchase, so make the most of this one if you’re eligible. You can salary package the costs associated with buying land or a house and land in a remote location.

The exact Remote Area Benefits you can claim vary depending on location, so be sure to check with your employer. All Remote Area Benefits are non-reportable benefits and won’t appear on your annual PAYG payment summary and can be in addition to any other salary packaging arrangement you already enjoy. Collectively known as Remote Area Benefits, the items that can be included are Mortgage Interest or Rental Payments, Housing Purchase Expenses, Relocation Costs and Holiday Travel.

Remote Area Mortgage Interest If you’re eligible, you might already enjoy saving on mortgage repayments with salary packaging. This lets you save even more. If you have a mortgage on your home and your workplace is in a remote area, and that home is also your primary place of residence, you can salary package more than only your mortgage repayments.

Because 50% of the interest amount is treated as an Exempt Benefit, 50% of your interest is deducted from your pre-tax salary. For example, Amy works in the not-for-profit sector and lives and works in a remote area and has a mortgage on a property that is Amy’s primary place of residence. Amy sends through the annual mortgage statement and the total interest paid was $15,700. For the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) year (1 April to 31 March), Amy can salary package $7,850 from pre-tax salary as a remote benefit and the other 50% can be part of the eligible Cap. This means Amy is able to salary package other expenses, thereby maximising the eligible entitlements.

Remote Area Rental Payments No one enjoys paying rent, but Remote Area Benefits will certainly take the sting out. If you pay rent on your home and your workplace is in a remote area, and that house is your primary place of residence, you can salary package 50% of the amount of rent you pay from your pre-tax salary. For example, Peter pays $8,200 in rent every year, therefore 50% of the rent amount can be salary packaged from pre-tax. But, as with Remote Area

Mortgage Interest, Peter can also salary package more to an eligible Cap for other benefits.

Costs incurred at the destination, such as meals, accommodation and car hire are not eligible.

Remote Area Holiday Travel

What qualifies as remote living?

If you are moving to a remote region, you’ll potentially find yourself a long way from other family members and friends.

This benefit is designed especially so you can salary package the cost of travel from your remote location to the nearest capital city and help you stay in touch.

This is available to eligible employees and their immediate family such as a spouse, partner and, even if you do not accompany them on the holiday. For example, your children may go and stay with their grandparents for a week while you and your partner stay at your property. You can salary package the children’s travel expenses if they take any form of remote transport. Plus, if some of your immediate family members do not live with you at your remote location, you can also use this benefit to pay for their travel to meet you.

The Remote Area Holiday Travel requires that the holiday is for three or more working days and the travel is within Australia to major population centres.

The claimable expenses can include: • • •

Air Fares En route meals & accommodation Hire car and hire car costs to the destination Costs associated with transport to the holiday location inc. own car expenses

Salary Packaging means you can pay less tax, use your pre-tax income to pay for everyday expenses and make your salary go further.

To qualify, you need to work for an employer and have your primary place of residence located more than 40 kilometres from a town of 14,000 people, or more and more than 100 kilometres from a town of 130,000 people. You must also live in the property as your main residence. Your employer must also be in a remote location as defined by the ATO. To put that into a Victorian perspective, you would need to be located more than 40 kilometres from a major Australian town or city such as Ballarat, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Shepparton, Wangaratta or Albury etc. For the full eligibility criteria, check the ATO website here.

Family Law Common Misconception: Does All Family Law disputes must go to Court?

It is a wildly common misconception that any Family Law related matter must go to Court -which is understandably quite off-putting to those experiencing Family dispute/issue and are seeking a resolution. However, the truth is only 5% of separated couples end up going all the way to a Final Hearing in Family Law Court, while the remaining 95% of family law matters are resolved outside the court room - thereby avoiding the stress, timely delays and costly disputes of facing court.

Many believe that engaging a lawyer to help with their Family Law matter means they automatically will end up in Court, or their matter will not be resolved peacefully. However, it is your Lawyer’s job is to listen and act on your instructions and encourage a peaceful resolution that avoids the court.

How do I resolve a Family Law dispute outside the Court?

By engaging a Lawyer, they will be able to listen to your story and assess your position. They will then ultimately advise you to the various options available based on your individual circumstances.

This will allow you make any decision fully informed.

Now is the time of the year to begin spring-cleaning your home or office.

What, now in the cold weather, on a gloomy day?!

Yes, now. Spring is the time when nature look bright and fresh, yet we often wait until these beautiful days appear before we even begin to make your homes and offices look sparkling and inviting.

Understandably, no one wants to prune the garden on a cold day or use the only sunny weekend in a month to pressure wash the outside patio. If that happens, it could seem like every spare free moment is spent cleaning and tidying.

So why not hire a team to do all this for you? There are several benefits to hiring a property services business.

Springtime allergies NATUROPATH

I do like Spring, it brings the promise of warmer weather. I particularly like wattle, the way it blooms well before the weather has begun to warm, like a promise that winter won’t last forever.

But for many of us, springtime has a unique set of problems: hayfever and allergies.

Symptoms obviously depend on what allergens your body is sensitive to, and the degree of sensitivity will determine the severity of your symptoms. Those with asthma or eczema in their family often have increased genetic sensitivity.

What’s going on?

An allergen enters the body and triggers an immune response to defend against the allergen. Mast cells (part of the immune response) release histamine which causes inflammation, usually in the nose, throat or skin.

What’s going wrong?

In someone without allergies, histamine is easily cleared from the body by enzymes called diamine oxidase (DAO) and histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT).

However, if these enzymes are impaired, the histamine can cause a range of allergic responses. Your body needs vitamin B6 and vitamin C to produce

DAO. Be sure your diet includes oily fish, green leafy vegetables, and citrus fruits to provide these nutrients.

Digestive issues such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can also cause problems, as some strains of unhealthy gut bacteria produce histamine. This can be alleviated by specific probiotics. See a naturopath or nutritionist for the right strains of probiotic, as some strains can exacerbate SIBO symptoms.

What to do?

Whilst fermented foods have great health benefits, they are high in histamine and should be avoided in times of allergy.

Slowly defrosted frozen foods are also high in histamine. Sulphites used as a preservative in some alcoholic beverages and in brightly coloured dried fruit, can also trigger an allergic reaction.

Prevention If you’re susceptible to springtime allergies, the following nutrients can be taken in the lead up to and during Spring to help with histamine clearance and strengthening the immune system:

If you suffer from a blocked or runny nose, slow breathing exercises can also help. Sit up straight and inhale through your nose for 3 counts. If possible, hold for a few counts, then slowly exhale through the nose for 5 counts. Do this for 15 minutes without talking and adjust the length of the count to what feels comfortable.

Reserve Bank lifts cash rate to 1.85pct The Reserve Bank has lifted the official cash rate by 50 basis points to 1.85 per cent – its highest level in over six years.

For someone with a $500,000 mortgage at the start of May, with 25 years remaining, the total increase across the four hikes would be $472 a month, according to RateCity.

RBA governor Philip Lowe said in a statement after the board meeting the rate rises in recent months were required “to bring inflation back to target and to create a more sustainable balance of demand and supply in the Australian economy”.

“The board expects to take further steps in the process of normalising monetary conditions over the months ahead, but it is not on a pre-set path,” he said.

“The size and timing of future interest rate increases will be guided by the incoming data and the board’s assessment of the outlook for inflation and the labour market.”

The RBA is seeking to return inflation to its target band of two to three per cent from its current level of 6.1 per cent – the highest it has been since the early 1990s.

Dr Lowe said inflation was expected to peak later this year and decline back to the target range.

The bank’s central forecast is for CPI inflation to be around 7.75 per cent over 2022, a little above four per cent over 2023, and around three per cent over 2024, he said.

He said higher inflation and higher interest rates were putting pressure on household budgets, with consumer confidence falling and housing prices declining in some markets after large increases in recent years.

“Working in the other direction, people are finding jobs and obtaining more hours of work,” he said.

“Many households have also built up large financial buffers and the saving rate remains higher than it was before the pandemic.

“The board will be paying close attention to how these various factors balance out as it assesses the appropriate setting of monetary policy.”

“Australians know that we are in for a difficult time ahead when it comes to the storm clouds in our economy, but we are confident that we will emerge on the other side of this stronger than before.”

PropTrack senior economist, Eleanor Creagh, said it had been the fastest increase in rates since 1994.

Anneke Thompson, chief economist at CreditorWatch, said the rate of default by small businesses was expected to rise by a percentage point over the next year.

The likes of Surfers Paradise in Queensland and Auburn in NSW are likely hotspots for mortgage defaults, flowing on to debt problems for local businesses.

The rate rise came as the value of new loan commitments for housing fell 4.4 per cent in June, but remained at a historically elevated level of $31 billion, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The value of new owner-occupier loan commitments fell 3.3 per cent in June, while new investor loan commitments fell 6.3 per cent.

The total number of dwellings approved fell 0.7 per cent in June, following a 11.2 per cent rise in May.

This month we are going to review the different types of personal insurances you can obtain. It is important to note that that not every insurer offers the below type of cover but they are available through different insurers. Again, seeking appropriate financial planning advice is important. Talk to a licenced financial planner and they can discuss with you what types of cover you should consider.

Please do not go to a mortgage broker, the bank or a general insurance broker and ask them to provide you with personal insurance. That is akin to asking a masseur to perform surgery on you…they could do it but they are likely to botch it up. Go to the professionals if you want a professional job done right.

Business Expense Cover helps cover the fixed operating expenses of your business if you are unable to work due to sickness or injury. Similar to Income Protection Cover, you receive an ongoing monthly income (for a maximum of 1 year), but instead of replacing your salary, it covers your business expenses. This can help keep your business afloat while you’re on the road to recovery.

Child Cover No one wants to see their child sick. But if it happened to your child, you’d want the best medical treatment available, and that can be expensive. Child Cover allows you to take up to $200,000 cover for kids aged between 2 and 18 and will pay a lump sum benefit if they suffer from a specified serious illness or in the event of their death.

Apprentice wage subsidy programs

All eligible businesses who employ an apprentice between 5 October 2020 and 30 June 2022 are eligible to receive a 50% wage subsidy. The wage subsidy is available for 12 months from commencement of employment. The maximum available subsidy is $7,000 per quarter per apprentice. This wage subsidy is a stimulus payment announced to effectively boost employment for young people and help businesses transition away from the COVID-19 downturn. These payments will be received via the Australian Apprentices Incentives Program. This program currently services employers by providing cash payments when

AX UPDATES ATO scrutiny of s 100A family trust arrangements

On 23 February 2022, the ATO released TR 2022/D1 and PCG 2022/D1 in relation to distributions made by trustees of discretionary trusts. This was complemented by TA 2022/1, which discusses parents benefitting from the trust entitlements of the adult children.

All 3 documents focus on schemes where income is diverted from an intended beneficiary in order to reduce tax liabilities. The rulings discuss these at detail and include significant attention to an important carve out for dealings that are “ordinary family or commercial” dealings. These dealings are excluded from

the anti-avoidance provisions.

Following on from the release of the draft guidance, the ATO has reiterated its stance in many areas relating to s 100A. In particular, where situations would generally come under an ordinary family or commercial dealing.Trustees need to make sure that their distributions are in accordance with the expectations of the ATO, otherwise they may be subject to an audit. Helping them understand their obligations is paramount coming up to the end of the current income year.

Unpaid present entitlements and extension of repayments The ATO is allowing an extension for unpaid present entitlements (UPE) to private companies initially under an interest-only loan on the final repayment date. The practical compliance guideline deals with UPEs that were put on commercial investment terms in accordance with PS LA 2010/4. If there is a balance to be repaid at the end of the investment period, it may become a new Div 7A loan.

30 June 2018 is the first year in which an interest-only loan at benchmark rates is due to be repaid after the issuing of PS LA 2010/4. That is, 7 years after the initial UPE was put on a sub-trust from the 30 June 2010 year.

The PCG has recently been updated to relate to arrangements ending in the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021

The Outpost Inc. was established in February 1990, over 32 years ago, and is the ONLY non referral after hours service feeding those in need 7 nights a week in the Greater City of Geelong.

The Outpost abides by a “no questions asked” policy and serves food to a diverse range of local people including young families and children. Some people are sleeping in cars and doorways; others aren’t homeless yet are doing it tough.

NOT EVERYONE fronting up to the Outpost is a rough sleeper.

The Outpost is very much a community often the same people come and go; and sadly new faces are ever emerging through the doors.

At its core, the Outpost services ensure sure that people have a hot meal, that there’s a place to attend, feel safe, and have a conversation with volunteers and with their community and friends.

Neighbourhood House OUR HISTORY A small group of enthusiastic local residents grew QNH from a playgroup in 1985. Over the years we have been located in a variety of buildings around the town. Since 2010 we have called 3 Tobin Drive home in a stunning position facing the bay. QNH provides space for exhibitions, art, language and music programs, hosts community groups and provides school holiday programs. Pop in anytime to visit the heart of the community.

HOW ARE WE FUNDED? The Queenscliffe Neighbourhood House receives funding from a range of sources. The State Government Department of Health and Human Services contribute towards the Co-ordinators’ salaries and some oncosts. ​The Borough of Queenscliffe provides the venue and its maintenance. A range of grants are applied for throughout the year. The Committee of Management is involved in fundraising activities for specific projects and to ensure the financial viability of the organisation.

QNH prepares a strategic plan every 3 years. The most recent is 2018 - 2020 and includes a vision statement, mission statement, values/aims/objectives, pillars, goals and tasks.

Our 2019 Community Needs Assessment provided feedback from our community on current programs and services offered by QNH. About the ‘Bikies’ The “bikies” group meets each Tuesday and Thursday to restore pre-loved bikes for refugee communities living in Geelong, African communities in Nambia, remote Indigenous communities in Northern Territory, as well as bushfire and flood victims on the East Coast of Australia. The project is supported by Diversitat in Geelong and has “grown like Topsy”. There seems to be no end of generosity from the community in donating bikes. So many that the group has had to find additional storage. The project has developed a team of 5 or 6 “bike specialists” who work tirelessly every week. Over 400 bikes have been repaired and are being put to good use - especially enjoyed by children! The support of the Uniting Church is appreciated in providing storage for completed bikes and its Vestry Shop to sell repaired children’s bikes to generate revenue, bike parts and equipment. And OG Rotary for providing logistic support in getting bikes from Queenscliff to around the country and across the seas.

Where have the bikes gone? What has been the impact?

To the Yarralin School in remote Northern Territory resulting in a huge increase in school attendance To victims of the 2019/20 bushfires in Gippsland (with more being prepared now for the Flood Communities) The Diversitat refugee bike education program.

Excess bikes donated to the Bikes for Humanity program which are shipped to Namibia where local people are trained in bike mechanics and repairs to provide them with employment and skills.

Substantial money from second hand bike sales to our local community are used to help fund refugee camps organised by Diversitat in Queenscliff.

50 bike helmets purchased for Diversitat program with more donated for Yarralin school.

Involvement in acquiring donated fishing equipment to assist with youth fishing activity run by Diversitat with some members assisting with this program.

The freshly cooked scones/ morning tea are a much appreciated and enjoyed feature of Tuesdays.

We provide food assistance to clients who are living in difficult circumstances. They are referred by agencies through a food voucher system to use at our mini-marts in both North Geelong & Geelong CBD. Every year more than 14,500 families use our services, equating to more than 36,000 adults and children.

A bulk distribution service also operates from the centre to meet the needs of agencies operating community pantries or similar. We supply this service to over 40 welfare agencies and organisations in the Greater Geelong region, Bellarine, Surf Coast and Winchelsea areas.

The centre also works in conjunction with welfare officers at schools and early learning centres in the region to provide emergency food hampers and vouchers to families in need. Each year around 7,000kg of food was distributed in this way. School groups visit the centre to learn about Food Security issues in the region. Students also are involved in cooking programs where produce from the centre is made into meals and offered to clients using the centre.

Foundation 61 provides a live-in community on the outskirts of Geelong, offering hope and direction for people dealing with life controlling issues. These issues are often, but not exclusively, associated with the use of drugs and alcohol.

Foundation 61 was inspired by the vision of the Old Testament prophet Isaiah for a new world order in which those excluded from mainstream society could once again find their place.

How to Best Help my Child Succeed We all want our children to be successful and to have the best years possible while they are at school. Here’s a few suggestions that will help your child have the best chance of success.

Practice gratitude as a family, thank each other with appreciations and kind words as much as possible – share what you are thankful for on a regular basis – take turns each evening around the dinner table – remind children how fortunate we are here in Australia Stay positive and give as much encouragement as possible In difficult situations keep calm – believe in yourself, your family, the school and other supports, trusting that things will work out in the end and ultimately you will grow through the experience – it’s been said that life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% how we respond to it Speak positively about others, particularly the school and teachers When issues arise at school, listen carefully to all sides of the story with an open mind and communicate with the school as soon as is practical Put realistic limits on screen and device time Create opportunities to connect with your child one on one – spend time with each child playing games, reading books, going on dates, walks, adventures, chatting, dreaming Model kindness and patience with everyone around you including strangers – children learn more about how to behave from observing their parents than anything else Plan a holiday or family outing together that everyone can look forward to and have some input into Facilitate one or two extra-curricular ongoing activities for your child Treat your child’s other parent/stepparents/ex with respect and kindness where possible – positive demonstrations such as this have far-reaching effects – I wonder if the way we treat our spouse has more lasting impact on our child than our relationship directly with our child.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

FC LEOPOLD FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field.The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop.

New Vision for the National Wool Museum A business case will be developed to fully explore the opportunities for the reimagined and expanded museum, including a potential development of the Dennys Lascelles Wool Stores to display and interpret Council’s large and diverse art and heritage collection.

The City will seek funding support from the Victorian Government to undertake the business case as well consider funding in future City budgets.

Creative Communities and Culture Chair, Trent Sullivan City of Greater Geelong Councillors have endorsed a 30-year vision for the National Wool Museum to extend its focus beyond wool to represent the broader story of Geelong.

The vision aims to broaden the scope and purpose of the Museum to reflect the region’s 60,000-year living culture and history, from First Nations People to the emerging and advanced industries of today.

However, research and engagement studies have shown that the Museum’s focus on wool limits its ability to connect with a broader audience and align with Council’s strategic objectives. Since 2010 the Museum has been broadening its programming to reflect changes in the Geelong community and the expectations of visitors.

The vision builds on the successes and legacy of the National Wool Museum.

Greater Geelong Mayor, Peter Murrihy; “The Museum will become an institution dedicated to Geelong’s human ingenuity, resilience, and enterprise – and actively shape the region’s future through its relationships, programs and legacy.

We want to create a museum that is of and for Greater Geelong. The story of wool and the related collections will remain a core component of the Museum and the new vision will build on its success and legacy.”

The multi-award-winning National Wool Museum was opened by the City in 1988 with a focus on the cultural life of Australians as told through wool, fibre and textiles.

It is an evolution and expansion of scope. The story of wool and collections will remain a core component of the Museum.

“The new vision will help community and visitors connect with our region’s remarkable cultural heritage.

This is an important step towards expanding and evolving the Museum so that it’s a place that everyone can enjoy in the heart of Geelong.

Independent analysis shows that the expanded vision could deliver a net benefit of up to $72 million to the region over a 30-year period – or around $2.3 million a year.”

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Museum and Shop attracted between 65,000 and 80,000 on-site visitors and 257,000 online exhibition and program participants annually.

The Museum’s current collection of wool related items comprises more than 8,200 objects of state, national and international significance valued at more than $8 million. The expanded Museum would become the home of Council’s larger Art and Heritage Collection, comprising approximately 20,000 items valued at approximately $20 million.

Swooping

“Native birds are a vital feature of our natural environment and are rightly afforded legal protection.

Residents can use some simple measures, like protecting your head and either avoiding or moving through a breeding area quickly, to minimise the chances of being swooped. We encourage residents who want to report a swooping bird on City-managed land to contact us.”

Season is here

Breeding season for swooping native birds has begun and is expected to continue until the middle of November.

Residents are advised to take extra precautions when outdoors during this period, as swooping birds can be present across urban and rural areas.

Many native birds, such as magpies and masked lapwings (also known as spur-winged plovers), swoop to protect their eggs and young during breeding season.

Residents can minimise the risk of being swooped by:

Avoiding nesting areas where birds are swooping if possible; or Protecting head and eyes; and Moving through the area quickly.

While swooping birds can be alarming, the behaviour is confined to approximately 10 per cent of birds and it’s rare for a bird to cause an injury.

Each breeding pair will also normally only swoop for four to six weeks until the chicks can fly.

All native birds are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975, so please do not harm or scare swooping birds, or interfere with their nests.

To report a swooping bird on Citymanaged land, please call 5272 5272.

The behaviour of the bird will be assessed and, if necessary, warning signs will be placed at the site.

The Victorian Swooping Bird Map shows hot spots where people have been swooped during the current or previous breeding season.

Volunteers Help Green Shared Trail

The National Tree Day event was supported by the City of Greater Geelong’s National Landcare Program.

Brownbill Ward Councillor Sarah Mansfield was among the many volunteers who got their hands dirty at the event.

The City manages 106,670 street trees and 46,459 park trees, as well as trees along rural roadways, reserves, waterways and bike trails.

The community has helped plant an estimated 2500 trees along one of Geelong’s scenic shared path corridors.

Volunteers helped green a section of the Ted Wilson Trail behind Haines Reserve, in Hamlyn Heights, at a community tree planting event on Sunday 31 July.

The 12-kilometre-long Ted Wilson Trail follows the alignment of the Geelong Ring Road, from Corio through to Herne Hill.

“We’ve planted tens of thousands of trees and plants along the Ted Wilson Trail in recent years and you can see the long-term greening program really taking shape. Events like National Tree Day are great at highlighting to younger people the value of direct action. They can plant trees in just one day, but the rewards of returning to the site and seeing their positive impacts can last a lifetime.”

Councillor Anthony Aitken, Chair of the City Works, Parks and Gardens portfolio, said the event helped progress a longrunning project, called Greenway, which is revegetating the trail with tens of thousands of trees and native grasses.

“The Ted Wilson Trail is one of the key routes in our shared trails network, which Council is upgrading and expanding at every opportunity. We are creating a larger and more diverse tree population, which is cooling our public areas and improving the look and feel of the municipality.”

There are already five dual port charging stations across Belmont, Corio and Drysdale depots, which help run six electric vans.

City to Expand Electric Vehicle Fleet The City plans to add to its growing fleet of electric vehicles (EVs), after securing a grant to install new charging stations at two of its depots.

Two dual port 22.5kW EV chargers – with the capacity to charge up to four vehicles simultaneously – will be installed at both Belmont and Corio depots.

The City has received a $48,000 grant from the Victorian Government to help deliver the infrastructure, via the EV Charging for Council Fleets program.

The program awarded grants to 26 Victorian councils, and plans to install about 120 private EV charging stations at 57 council sites across Victoria by May 2023.

Councillor Stephanie Asher, Chair of the Sustainability Performance portfolio, thanked the Victorian Government for its support in helping the City embrace sustainable transport and cleaner fuels.

“Council is investing in more electric vehicle charging technology, to help meet the demands of our growing carbonneutral fleet. We want to transition our light fleet to net zero within five years, and encourage the community to increase its use of EVs.”

While there are a further three EVs soon to be delivered, the City is preparing to order up to 10 more EVs in 2022-23.

Cr Asher said the goal of achieving a netzero light fleet by 2027 was a key plank in Council’s wider sustainability aims.

“Driving down our carbon footprint has a range of environmental and economic benefits. It also leads our community towards a more sustainable future, where we are a zero-emissions, climate ready region that is well placed to deal with future challenges.”

Recently released provisional figures indicate that the City’s operational carbon emissions dropped by an estimated 30 per cent in 2021-22.

Emissions have been slashed by more than 50 per cent since June 2017, on the back of a range of clever and creative sustainability initiatives.

Vietnam Veterans Day March and Memorial Service Vietnam Veterans Day remembers all those men and women who served in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam Veterans Association, Geelong and District Sub-Branch will gather and march from Mackey Street in North Geelong on Sunday 14 August 2022 from 10.30am.

The parade will commence at approximately 10.40am and travel to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the corner of Swinburne Street and Melbourne Road at approximately 11.00am.

A service remembering those that served in the Vietnam War will take place at the Vietnam Memorial at 11am. Everyone is welcome to join the service and pay their respects to those that served and those that didn’t return.

Poppy Kettle Playground

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons. Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

The Old Paper Mills Hubcaps To Creative Hubs is the title for a series of short films about creative Geelong. Hubcaps are a reminder of Ford as a major employer before pulling out in 2016. Vacant industrial spaces such as factories and wool mills have become creative villages.

I stayed in a Vrbo in the Old Paper Mills (1878). In Victorian times, this bluestone mill pulped rags to make paper. The dramatic waterfall setting reminded me of the cover of George Eliot’s novel The Mill and the Floss. The present owner, Alex Robins, has lovingly restored what he refers to as an Industrial Cathedral.

The old mill is a labyrinth of galleries, studios, workshops, and boutique shops with handmade goods. Enjoy a coffee at The Door Gallery Cafe surrounded by antique Indian doors.

Provenance Wines has a cellar door and restaurant in the main building. Enjoy tastings matched with bite-sized food pairings. Rone painted one of his famous esoteric faces on the back wall. As street art is so transient, it’s great to see a lasting testament to his work.

Cunningham Pier Geelong Cunningham Pier is one of the most recognisable structures on the Geelong Waterfront.

Opening in the mid-1850s it was originally known as Railway Pier. It was an important part of the Geelong Port and you can still see the train lines that were used to transport cargo to the end of the pier.

The pier stretches 250 metres out over Corio Bay and its bright white building is a standout feature of the foreshore.

The two-storey weatherboard building houses the Wah Bar and Asian food restaurant (bao buns!), Wah Wah Gee. The Pier Geelong function centre is also located here.

A large part of this Geelong pier is dedicated to car parking and a convenient covered walkway provides shelter as you walk along the train tracks.

Cunningham Pier fishing has always been popular and in keeping with tradition, local anglers continue to use it.

Geelong Arts and Cultural Precinct The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Western Beach People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s.

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish.

In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

Rippleside Park

Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.

Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.

The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.

The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

Steampacket Gardens Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

The Carousel The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell handcarved wooden carousel.

Old Geelong Gaol The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

For many retirees, one of the questions on their mind is whether they will be eligible for a Centrelink Concession Card and what will this entitle them to.

We explore in this article the benefits pensioners can enjoy if they obtain the Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) compared to other Centrelink cards like the Low Income Health Care Card (LIHCC) and the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC).

National Benefits The following are the benefits provided by the abovementioned cards - PCC, LIHCC and CSHC: 1. Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN)

Medicare Safety Nets can help to lower your out-of-pocket medical costs for out of hospital services.

If you need to see a doctor or get tests regularly, you could end up with high medical costs. Medicare Safety Nets can help to lower your out-of-pocket costs.

These can include: • •

seeing a doctor or specialist some tests and scans like blood tests and CT scans.

When you spend over a certain amount in a calendar year, you will receive a higher amount back. Services Australia will calculate the Safety Nets each calendar year, 1 January to 31 December.

Keep in mind, your doctor’s visit or test will still cost the same.

What are the thresholds Medicare Safety Nets have thresholds. When you spend certain amounts in gap and out of pocket costs, you’ll reach the thresholds. Once you’ve reached the thresholds, you’ll start getting higher Medicare benefits. This means you’ll get more money back from Services Australia for certain Medicare services.

Only verified payments count towards the threshold. Verified payments are when you pay for your health professional service in full, before you make a claim from Services Australia. If you have unverified payments, you’ll need to pay them before they count towards your threshold. Unverified payments are when you don’t pay your doctor’s fee before you claim from Services Australia. Read more about the difference between verified and unverified payments.

A Medicare benefit is the dollar amount Service Australia pays you when you’ve made a claim for a medical service.

This is usually 85-100% of the schedule fee. A schedule fee is the dollar amount the Australian Government sets for each medical service. The MBS Online website lists the schedule fee amount. You can search the MBS by keyword or item number to find the schedule fee amount.

The Department of Health and Aged Care sets threshold amounts each year from 1 January.

2. Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme provides benefits to both concession and non- concession card holders. Concession card holders can use the PSB to pay $6.60 for each medicine as a maximum limit while the non- concession card holders can use PSB to pay a maximum of $41.30 for medicine.

If a concession card holder is able to pay $ 316.80 which is equivalent to an amount for a calendar year PBS safety net threshold, then their medicine will be free for the rest of the year.

4. Australia Post If your client is a concession card holder, he is eligible for a MyPost account which entitles him for free stamps discounts on mail hold or mail redirection.

11 in a row: Undermanned Cats flex their muscles in romp over Saints Geelong’s scintillating run continued on Saturday evening, reaffirming its standing as the League’s No.1 seed heading into September with yet another victory, seeing off a desperate St Kilda by 45 points at its GMHBA Stadium fortress.

Even without a host of first-team players - including Joel Selwood (managed), Gary Rohan (concussion), late withdrawal Mark Blicavs (managed) and even later withdrawal Patrick Dangerfield (calf tightness) - the Cats showcased their strength in depth and flexed when it mattered to get the job done.

The Cats started and finished the game like a house on fire, sandwiching the Saints’ fightback which saw the margin reduced to as little as four points late in the second quarter, with an impressive show of class on all three lines.

Sam De Koning was sensational, keeping Max King to a single goal, while Sam Menegola (25 disposals, 10 score involvements) and Brandan Parfitt (25 disposals, 10 clearances, six tackles) were sensational in the middle, along with the unsung Max Holmes (24 disposals, 531 metres gained) and Isaac Smith, who booted three goals along with Tom Hawkins.

As a result of the 17.8 (110) to 10.5 (65) win, Geelong sits a game plus a healthy percentage clear of second-placed Collingwood heading into the final two games of the season where it will go in as heavy favourite against Gold Coast and West Coast.

On the other hand, the Saints, who were the last team to beat Geelong back in round nine, were simply unable to sustain their effort for long enough. After an impressive end to the first half, St Kilda was run over by the juggernaut that is Geelong - shipping nine goals to two in the second half - with the first of those not coming until the 17-minute mark of the final term.

St Kilda’s (11-9) hopes of a return to September action have now taken a major hit, with Richmond’s win over Port Adelaide seeing them fall out of the top eight heading into a difficult end to the season - while luckless midfielder Dan Hannebery was subbed out with an ankle injury in only his second game back in the side.

Early on, it was all Geelong. The Cats raced out of the blocks, moving the ball with aplomb into their attacking 50, and carving up the Saints defence who probably should’ve been down by more than the 22-point deficit at the quarter-time siren.

However, in the second quarter, St Kilda was a completely different outfit, showcasing the famed pressure Brett Ratten had spoken so glowingly about for weeks. The Saints’ intent around the ground went up tenfold and they were able to not only level things in the middle, but gain a semblance of control.

As a result, the scoreboard began ticking over, with the Saints booting four goals to the Cats’ two in the second term - but a late goal to Tyson Stengle kept the visitors at an arm’s length with the margin back out to 10 points at the major break.

From that point on, it was all Geelong, which booted nine unanswered goals to put the contest to rest in style and ensure its undefeated run against the Saints at GMHBA Stadium continues beyond 23 years.

Valid Find Cards have four folds and contain six different categories. Valid Find Cards will have its Regions logo sticker placed in the circle at the back and has an Authentication code display in front of the Find Cards.

Find Cards that DO NOT display its Regions Sticker in the circle at the back and DO NOT display an Authentication code in front of the Find Card are INVALID. They will not be accepted at any participating businesses. Also, your signature must be present. You may be asked to present ID to verify that Find Card belongs to you.

Present the Find Card and ID prior to paying bill. Card is Non-Transferable. Each offer corresponds to a number on the card. Number will be crossed off once offer used. This is not a credit or charge card.
