GEELONG GETS READY TO RUN: THE INAUGURAL GEELONG RUNNING FESTIVAL

by Joe Lam Geelong is getting ready to take its place on the running map, with the inaugural Geelong Running Festival coming to the city on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026. After years of planning, this exciting new event will bring runners, walkers, families and supporters together for a weekend celebrating fitness, community and everything that makes Geelong special. The festival is supported by the City of Greater Geelong and is expected to attract local, interstate and international participants. The weekend will begin on Saturday with events designed to make sure everyone has an opportunity to be involved. The Kids races include an 800-metre event and a one-mile race, while an All Abilities one-mile event will provide an inclusive opportunity for participants of different

abilities to take part. The Saturday events will be held around the Geelong Waterfront, creating a fun and welcoming start to the festival. Sunday is when the main races take centre stage. Participants can choose from the Zeekr Marathon, RedZed Half Marathon or the Henley Homes Community 6.5km Run. The marathon and half marathon begin at 7am, followed by the 6.5km community run at 7:25am. For those who want to participate without taking on a marathon, the 6.5km event provides a more accessible option. Participants can run or walk through traffic-free streets, with the course featuring views of Corio Bay and the Eastern Beach foreshore, as well as a section through the iconic Kardinia Park precinct. But the festival is about more than running. It is an opportunity for the Geelong

community to come together, encourage healthy lifestyles and showcase the region to visitors. Organisers have also partnered with Grassrootz with a goal of raising $250,000 for local Geelong charities in 2026, adding an important community fundraising element to the event. Whether you are an experienced marathon runner, someone taking your first steps into organised running, a family looking for an active weekend, or simply a supporter cheering from the sidelines, there is a place for you at the Geelong Running Festival. Ready to be part of Geelong’s first marathon weekend? Register, get your family and friends involved, and start preparing for an unforgettable celebration of running, community and our wonderful city.

Geelong Column - by City of Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj

One of the most rewarding parts of being Mayor is hearing directly from the people who will inherit the Greater Geelong we are building today. Young people often bring a different perspective to the challenges and opportunities facing our region. They ask thoughtful questions, identify issues adults can overlook and offer practical ideas about how we can create a better community for everyone. That’s why the City of Greater Geelong’s Youth Council is so important. Over the past several months, our Youth Councillors have been learning about local government while helping to shape decisions that affect our region. They have provided feedback on the Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula and Bannockburn Bus Network Review, participated in Council budget workshops and worked alongside councillors through the Councillor Connect Mentoring Program. What has impressed me most is their willingness to tackle complex issues and contribute constructively to discussions. The group has identified youth loneliness and isolation as key concerns and responded by helping to develop the City’s first Youth Festa-Fair. This free event, coming to Geelong West Town Hall on Tuesday 29 September, will feature performances, youth-run stalls, interactive activities, free food and information about local support services. It aims to create a fun space where young people can meet others, build connections and feel welcome. Search ‘Geelong Youth Festa-Fair’ to find out more. Youth Council members have also worked with Cultura’s Multicultural Youth Council and participated in range of other leadership development opportunities. These experiences have helped build their confidence and strengthen their ability to learn from their peers. The Youth Council’s latest report, presented during last month’s council meeting, demonstrates just how much young people can achieve when we invite them into the conversation. We’re now looking for enthusiastic residents aged 12 to 17 to join the 2027 Youth Council and become part of Greater Geelong’s official youth voice. If you’re a young person with ideas to share and a passion for your community, or know someone who is, I encourage you to nominate at yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/2027- youth-council-nominations before 27 September.

LOST SUPER: THE ATO SAYS $21 BILLION COULD BE WAITING TO BE FOUND FINANCIAL PLANNER By Warren Strybosch

When a super fund is unable to reunite a member with their super, the money may ultimately be transferred to the ATO, which holds the funds while attempting to reunite them with their owner.

Have you checked whether you have lost super?

Your lost super could be closer than you think

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is urging Australians to check whether they have lost track of their superannuation, with more than $21 billion in lost super currently waiting to be claimed or reunited with its owners.

The good news is that finding lost super is relatively straightforward.

For many Australians, lost super is not the result of anything unusual. It can simply happen when you change jobs, change address, forget about an old super account or fail to update your contact details with your super fund. Over time, these small oversights can result in multiple superannuation accounts — and potentially thousands of dollars sitting in an account you may have forgotten about. How does super become lost? Superannuation can become lost for a number of reasons, but one of the most common is an account becoming inactive. For example, you may have changed employers and started contributing to a new super fund without closing or consolidating your previous account. If there are no further contributions and your super fund is unable to contact you, your previous account may eventually be classified as lost. Changing your address, phone number or email address without updating your super fund can also make it difficult for the fund to contact you.

Your myGov account can be used to access ATO services and check whether the ATO is holding superannuation on your behalf. You may also discover that you have multiple super accounts with different funds. It is worth checking even if you think you have all your super accounted for. An old account from a previous employer could contain a balance that you have simply forgotten about. Keep your details up to date One of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of losing track of your super is to make sure your personal details are kept up to date. Consider checking that your: • residential address is current; • email address is correct; • telephone number is up to date; and • super fund has your current contact information. You should also make sure your super fund knows which account you want your employer contributions paid into.

Don’t just find it — consider what you should do with it Finding lost super is only the first step.

Source: Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Information current at the time of publication. Individual circumstances vary and professional advice should be obtained before making decisions about superannuation.

If you have several superannuation accounts, it may be worth considering whether consolidating them into one account is appropriate. Having multiple accounts can potentially mean paying multiple sets of fees and insurance premiums. However, consolidating super should not be done automatically. Before closing an existing super account, you should consider whether you have insurance cover attached to the account, whether there are any valuable features or benefits you would lose, and whether the receiving super fund is appropriate for your circumstances. There can also be tax and contribution considerations depending on the circumstances.

WHAT ONE MAN’S 20-YEAR VISION CAN TEACH US ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY And I think that says something pretty special about the Geelong community. There are good people everywhere who genuinely want to help. Often, they’re not looking for recognition or trying to make a big statement about it. They see something worthwhile, realise they have something that could make a difference, and offer it. It’s easy to become cynical about the world, particularly when we’re constantly hearing about everything that’s going wrong. Stories like Nelco’s are a good reminder that there’s plenty of good happening as well.

LEADERSHIP SPECIALIST By Sally Higoe

Nearly 20 years ago, I met a man named Nelco in Uganda. Even then, he was talking about what he wanted to create for the children growing up around him. Nelco grew up in the hills of South Western Uganda, where getting an education meant walking miles and miles to school each day. He did that walk himself, day after day, throughout his schooling. So he knew exactly what it meant for children living in remote areas, and why having education and support closer to home could make such a difference. From a young age, he wanted to do something about it. That vision eventually became Karambo Children Centre.

And I think there’s something in that for all of us who lead people, organisations or communities. Most people associate leadership with positions, organisations, teams and authority. But have you ever thought about leadership as seeing something that needs to change, deciding you’re going to do something about it, and then continuing to show up for it year after year? Because that’s the foundation of good leadership. Today, Karambo Children Centre supports children with meals, school supplies, clothing and shoes, mattresses, mosquito nets, toothpaste and soap. Simple things, really. important things.

But

incredibly

There’s another part of Nelco’s story that I think says a lot about community as well.

It hasn’t been an easy road. He hasn’t had access to many of the resources we take for granted here. There have been plenty of reasons why it would have been easier to stop.

Over the years, people here in Geelong have seen somewhere they could help Nelco and the children, and used what they had to do it.

He has just kept finding a way.

And when enough people do that, even in relatively small ways, it can help someone like Nelco keep moving a much bigger vision forward. Nelco may never be able to help every child he wants to help. But because he kept going, and because other people chose to help him keep going, there are children being fed, educated and cared for today. And after nearly 20 years of watching him work towards the same vision, it’s pretty special to see how far it’s come. To check out Karambo Children Centre’s new website and learn more about its work, visit www.karamboorphans.org.au.

It gives children a place to learn, support they may not otherwise have and, importantly, people who care about what happens to them.

Almost 20 years later, I’m constantly in awe of how long Nelco has kept at it.

But he hasn’t.

People care. People help. People give their time, skills, money and connections to things that matter to them.

That’s ranged from donating money for sporting equipment through to donating the time and skills needed to build the Centre’s new website and create its logo.

Key ways to overcome rising costs and expenses ACCOUNTANT By Anjana Jogi

A recent survey showed that 32 per cent of Australian businesses list [increased operating costs] among their top three concerns. And rising costs can have a significant impact on your cashflow and bottom line. So, what can you do to minimise the impact of sky-rocketing costs in your business? 7 ways to reduce your expenses and boost revenue. When costs are rising and profit margins are falling, that’s bad news for the financial health of your business. But there are ways to combat this scenario. In short, you have two main tactics to kick into gear. You can either look at cost-cutting across all your operating expenses, or you can find ways to sympathetically boost your revenue. Strategies for cost reduction: Streamline your operations Look for any inefficiencies and find ways to streamline your processes and reduce the underlying costs. You can also use technology to automate key functions to add efficiency and reduce your underlying costs.

own cashflow pressures. Looking for alternative suppliers or finding cost efficiencies by purchasing in bulk. Reduce your energy consumption Putting energy-saving measures in place, like LED lighting and energy-efficient equipment, is a move towards good sustainability, but can also help you save money. Considering renewable energy options can also help. Manage inventory effectively Keeping your inventory lean is a good way to optimise inventory levels and minimise your holding costs. Implementing a just-in-time inventory management cuts costs while keeping you ready to service customer needs.

Introduce new products or services If your current products/services are not selling, it could be time to diversify your offering to meet changing customer needs. Make the most of your existing resources and expertise to bring new products to market. There’s no magic wand that can make the current economic pressures disappear. But by being proactive about your cost-reduction and revenuegeneration, you can do your best to protect your business from the worst elements of increasing costs and an uncertain market. We’ll help you review your current financial and business strategies to look for the best possible opportunities, whether it’s better cashflow management, cost-cutting or revenue generation.

Strategies for increasing revenue: Expand your customer base A broader customer base helps to bring in more sales and revenue. Explore the potential for entering new markets or customer segments, and boost ecommerce and digital marketing to sell more online. Raise your prices strategically

Negotiate with suppliers

Think about the demand for your products/services in the market and revise your pricing to keep it competitive.

Revisit your existing contracts with suppliers and negotiate better terms, while also being mindful of the suppliers

Be sure to communicate any price increases sympathetically to customers, so you don’t damage customer loyalty.

Back to Basics Bookkeeping

The Price is Right

BOOKKEEPING By Jodie Moore

Pricing a product or service is one of the most critical decisions a business owner must make. Charge too much, and you risk scaring away potential customers. Charge too little, and you might not cover your costs or earn the profit you need to sustain and grow your business. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand how to determine the right price for your product or service using smart pricing strategies.

2. Analyse the Market

•

•

Fixed Costs: These are costs that remain constant, regardless of how much you produce or sell. They include things like rent, utilities, software subscriptions, and salaried employees. Variable Costs: These fluctuate depending on how much you produce or sell. Materials, hourly wages, packaging, and shipping costs all fall under this category.

Once you’ve calculated both fixed and variable costs, you can figure out your break-even point—the minimum number of sales you need to cover both types of costs. This is crucial, as it ensures that your pricing will at least allow you to avoid losses.

4. Consider Psychological Pricing Psychological pricing can have a powerful impact on your sales. For instance, pricing something at $99.99 instead of $100 can trigger a perception of a better deal, even though the difference is just one cent. In addition to this “charm pricing,” consider tiered pricing strategies, bundling, or offering discounts for bulk purchases. Offering multiple price points or subscription-based pricing can also appeal to different customer segments and encourage repeat business.

Next, you’ll want to research the market. Understanding what your competitors charge is an essential part of the pricing strategy. However, just copying your competitors isn’t always the best approach. Look at:

Another side to Psychological Pricing is to deliberately have a higher price point to your competitors to have a higher perceived value. Be sure though that your product or service can stand up to this expectation as it can very quickly crumble if people realise your product is in fact inferior.

•

5. Test and Adjust

•

1. Understand Your Costs The first step in pricing is understanding all of the costs involved in delivering your product or service. These costs typically break down into two categories:

For instance, if your total cost per product is $50, and you want a 20% profit margin, you would add $10 to the cost (for a total price of $60). This ensures that your pricing strategy not only covers costs but also allows for sustainable growth.

•

Direct Competitors: These are businesses offering similar products or services. What price range do they offer, and how does your product compare in terms of quality and features? Indirect Competitors: These may not be offering exactly what you do, but they still capture your potential customers’ attention. For example, a local bakery might compete with a coffee shop that offers prepackaged pastries. Customer Expectations: What do your customers value most? Are they looking for premium quality, or are they more focused on affordability? This can help you position your price in a way that aligns with what your target market expects.

3. Factor in Profit Margin One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is not accounting for the profit margin. After covering all your costs, you need to ensure that you’re making a profit. Profit margin is typically calculated as a percentage of the cost of goods sold (COGS). A common rule of thumb for small businesses is to target a profit margin between 10% and 20%, though this can vary depending on the industry.

Even with all the research and calculations in place, pricing is not a one-time decision. Over time, customer behaviour, market conditions, and your business costs can change. That’s why it’s important to test your pricing strategy. You might try offering a new product at a slightly higher price to see how customers respond or provide limited-time discounts to see if they increase sales volume. By tracking your sales data and monitoring customer feedback, you’ll be able to adjust your pricing strategy as needed, ensuring long-term profitability.

Conclusion Pricing is both an art and a science. By carefully calculating costs, understanding market conditions, factoring in profit margins, and considering psychological pricing techniques, you can find a price point that supports your financial goals. In the end, the right price isn’t just about what customers are willing to pay—it’s about creating a balanced strategy that ensures your business can thrive in both the short and long term.

B6 SAFE? Is Vitamin

NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger

You may have heard of vitamin B6 being in the spotlight lately, as an overdose can cause peripheral neuropathy. The symptoms of this include numbness and pain in the limbs and healing can be slow. An overdose usually occurs when someone is taking multiple supplements, or food products that have added B6. But the answer is not as simple as limiting B6, let me explain: There are different forms of B6, just like there are different types of dwellings: caravans, bungalows and houses. Imagine you live in a caravan and a storm causes it to roll down the road and hit a tree, causing the rain water to come pouring through the roof. There, in the middle of the night, in rain

and wind, your neighbour offers shelter in their house. It would be crazy to decide as a result of this that all types of dwellings are unsafe.

nervous system issues in some people, however, Pyridoxamine, and P5P have been studied to find that they can heal the nervous system.

The main forms of Vitamin B6 are Pyridoxine, Pyridoxamine, and Pyridoxal5-Phosphate (P5P). Pyridoxine has been shown to cause peripheral neuropathy, whilst P5P is actually protective against it.

So, firstly aim to get your B vitamins from meat (red, white and fish), and if you do choose to supplement, make sure you check the form of B6, and always choose Pyridoxamine, or P5P. If you would like a safe B vitamin supplement, Whole Naturopathy can help with that, or if you’re suffering peripheral neuropathy as a result of a Pyridoxine overdose, I have successfully treated that, and would be happy to help you heal.

The problem with the B6 supplementation arises due to very little distinction between these different forms by the governing body in Australia (aka we don’t distinguish between the different types of dwellings, as they have been shown to be unsafe). This is seen in the labelling requirements on a B6 supplement, where B6 must be listed as the equivalent dose of Pyridoxine, even if it doesn’t contain that form of B6. A recent European study has found that even a low dose of Pyridoxine can cause

A New Chapter: Finding Hope After a Dementia Diagnosis

By Maree Smith

Receiving a diagnosis of dementia can be one of the most significant moments in a person’s life. It is common to experience a range of emotions including shock, fear, sadness, anger, uncertainty, and even relief at finally having an explanation for the changes you have been experiencing. Whatever you are feeling, it is important to know that you are not alone and that support is available. A diagnosis of dementia does not mean life is over. Many people continue to live meaningful, independent and fulfilling lives for years after diagnosis. A dementia diagnosis can take time to process. Dementia Australia encourages people to be kind to themselves and recognise that it is normal to experience strong emotions during the early stages after diagnosis. You do not need to have all the answers immediately. Taking things one step at a time can help make the journey feel less overwhelming.

Learning about dementia, asking questions and seeking support can help you feel more informed and confident about what comes next. Having a diagnosis also means you can access services, supports and education designed specifically to help you live well with dementia. Remember: You Are More Than Your Diagnosis One of the most important messages shared by people living with dementia is that a diagnosis does not change who you are. You are still: • A parent, partner, grandparent or friend. • A valued member of your community. • Someone with interests, hobbies and goals. • A person with skills, strengths and life experiences.

While dementia may create new challenges, it does not take away your identity or your ability to experience joy, purpose and meaningful relationships. Dementia Australia recommends maintaining social connections and remaining actively involved in your community wherever possible. Continuing to do the things you enjoy can support wellbeing, confidence and quality of life. Consider: • Catching up regularly with family and friends. • Continuing hobbies and interests. • Attending local community groups. • Joining a walking group or exercise program. • Participating in arts, music or creative activities. • Volunteering in your community. • Attending social clubs or men’s and women’s groups. • Staying involved with cultural, spiritual or faith-based communities.

Social connection helps reduce isolation and reminds us that we are part of something bigger than our diagnosis. Talk to the People You Trust Many people worry about telling family and friends about their diagnosis. While these conversations can feel difficult, trusted family members and friends can often provide valuable emotional and practical support. Dementia Australia encourages people to consider who they would like to tell and when they are ready to have those conversations. Remember, you are in control. You decide who you tell, how much you share and when you are ready to share it. Plan Ahead While You Can

Community Health Services

While it can be difficult to think about the future, planning ahead can provide reassurance and peace of mind.

City and Tennis Victoria rally for Geelong Regional Tennis Centre The City of Greater Geelong and Tennis Victoria are continuing to rally for the Geelong Regional Tennis Centre. Geelong professional tennis player Amy Stevens says a world-class facility close to home would be a gamechanger for the sport from community to professional level. The proposed Geelong Regional Tennis Centre in Armstrong Creek is Tennis Victoria’s number one infrastructure priority ahead of the state election. The City and Tennis Victoria met with local electoral candidates in early August to reaffirm the case for a 20-court facility (12 ITF and 8 community) that could provide a base for professional players and tournaments around the Australian Open, while nurturing grassroots participation, talent and regional pathways year-round. In addition to the 20 tennis courts, eight smaller multipurpose courts would be utilised for Pickleball, Hot Shots and POP Tennis.

Amy Stevens is advocating for the Geelong Regional Tennis Centre

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“The vision has strong support right across the tennis community, including Tennis Australia, Tennis Victoria, Tennis Geelong, local clubs and players.

The City has put $13 million on the table for the multi-sport precinct, while Tennis Victoria and Tennis Australia have committed a further $1 million in funding and in-kind support the Tennis Centre.

We’re continuing to have conversations with government and candidates because we know what this project could deliver for Geelong, for tennis and for western Victoria.”

A further $8.5 million from the Victorian and Federal Governments is needed to bring the project to life.

“The Geelong Regional Tennis Centre (GRTC) represents a significant opportunity to strengthen tennis across the region. It will service the entire tennis ecosystem, from community participation and local clubs, through to player development, high-performance pathways and major events.

The proposed Geelong Regional Tennis Centre would feature: • • • • •

12 ITF-approved courts capable of hosting international events eight community courts eight multipurpose courts for activities including pickleball, Hot Shots and POP Tennis training and recovery facilities strong regional connectivity, with links to Melbourne, Avalon Airport and south-west Victoria.

More than 100 people gathered for a community information session in May to hear about the progress of the project. The Geelong Regional Tennis Centre is one of the City’s hallmark sporting infrastructure priorities leading into the state election. Find out more at geelongcity.vic.gov.au/ advocacy

Tennis Victoria CEO, Kim Kachel

For a region experiencing significant growth, investment in contemporary sporting infrastructure is critical. The GRTC has the potential to be a transformative project for tennis and the broader Geelong and south west Victorian community. We are proud to continue working alongside Council to help bring this long-term vision to life.” Amy Stevens, professional tennis player who grew up in Ocean Grove and Wensleydale

“Being from Geelong, and rural Geelong, the travel was astronomical. I was fortunate to have an amazing family taking me to Melbourne five days a week – but it could be two-to-three hours one way in traffic. I would really have appreciated having a training facility closer to home. Having a regional facility would be amazing for a visibility side of things. You can really be what you can see. That belief system and pathway that the regional facility would provide would be amazing for the young talent coming up. I can see the regional tennis facility being used as a hub for big professional tournaments, whether that’s a leadin for the Australian Open or junior events.”

Help shape vision proposing thousands of new homes, jobs and better connections

www.findgeelong.com.au

We’re also holding drop-in sessions next month: • 4.00pm - 6.30pm on Thursday 8 October at YMCA Geelong Inc. (2533 Riversdale Rd, Geelong). •

11.30am - 2.30pm on Saturday 10 October at Wurriki Nyal civic precinct (137-149 Mercer Street, Geelong).

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM “Councils are looking at ways to deliver new apartments, townhouses and houses to meet population demands as national housing shortages continue. The West Fyans - Fyans Street Precinct is one of the most significant urban renewal opportunities in our region.

Council’s given the green light for community consultation to begin on Monday 14 September for the Draft West Fyans - Fyans Street Precinct Structure Plan. The precinct covers 118 hectares of residential and industrial land in South Geelong and Newtown, bound by West Fyans Street, Shannon Avenue, Swanston Street and the Barwon River. It is approximately 1.5 kilometres south of central Geelong.

The draft precinct structure plan outlines a long-term vision to create a more connected, vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood that provides different types of housing, employment opportunities and improved public spaces. Importantly, this is a draft plan and we want to hear from residents, businesses, workers and landowners before any decisions are made.”

Since the existing structure plan was adopted in 2009, Geelong has experienced significant population growth, changing housing needs and evolving employment patterns. This updated plan attempts to respond to these changes and provide a coordinated vision for the precinct’s future.

Please review the proposal and help to shape the future of this precinct.

The draft plan proposes a mixed-use, walkable and sustainable neighbourhood that could accommodate between 1,500 and 2,550 additional homes, while creating new employment, improving connectivity and enhancing access to the Barwon River corridor.

“The Draft West Fyans - Fyans Street Precinct Structure Plan is an important piece of work.

It identifies five distinct character precincts within the study area and proposes: • Preferred building heights ranging from two to ten storeys depending on location. • More housing in strategic locations, particularly close to South Geelong Station. • The transition of some industrial land to support housing, employment and community uses. • Reuse and integration of significant heritage and industrial buildings. • Improved walking, cycling and public transport connections. • Better access to South Geelong Station and the Barwon River corridor. • More trees and greener streets. • Climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable development outcomes. With new builds in this precinct currently able to be above 10 storeys, the Draft West Fyans - Fyans Street Precinct Structure Plan provides clearer guidance for future development. It also recognises the importance of heritage, neighbourhood character, economic activity and infrastructure planning. Have your say from Monday 14 September until Sunday 18 October.

Councillor Trent Sullivan

Many view Corio Bay as Greater Geelong’s largest and most significant geographical feature, but the Barwon River corridor is equally as important for its heritage and natural beauty. This area is becoming an increasingly desirable inner-city location to live, work, do business and undertake leisure activities. We need to plan for the future demand that will be placed in this area and consultation will help us understand what matters most to people. We want to hear what aspects of the plan you support, areas of concern or potential impacts, community priorities and planning trade-offs.”

PARKING INFRINGEMENTS

Following a recent review of our infringement system, we identified a software issue that resulted in duplicate infringement numbers being assigned to a small number of parking infringements. While the infringements were correctly issued, the duplication of infringement numbers means we will not enforce them. As soon as Council became aware of the issue, we undertook a thorough investigation to determine the cause and extent of the problem. We have also implemented measures to prevent this issue from occurring again. The affected infringements are now being withdrawn, and impacted individuals will be contacted directly.

CITY LOCKS IN PERMANENT HOME FOR GEELONG SOCIETY OF OPERATIC AND DRAMATIC ARTS As one of the longest running youth theatre companies in Australia, GSODA provides production-based theatre and performance training to young performers aged between 10 and 17 years old. Each year, the organisation produces several high-standard amateur theatre experiences for the community, including specific school performances to provide students with the opportunity to experience live performance and engage in creative learning. After being without a home since 2022, GSODA has continued to deliver programs, rehearsals and performances from multiple venues across Greater Geelong while searching for a permanent base. Following an open Expression of Interest process to lease the hall at 50 Westmoreland Street, Whittington, the City selected GSODA as the successful applicant. The appointment provides long-term certainty for the much-loved community organisation and creates a pathway for the site to evolve into a vibrant hub for local performing arts activity.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“For generations, GSODA has nurtured young talent, created opportunities for participation in the arts and brought our community closer together through live performance. Despite the challenges of operating without a permanent home, they have continued to inspire young people and deliver outstanding opportunities for our community. After years of uncertainty, we are delighted to support GSODA’s long-term future by selecting the organisation as the preferred tenant for this site. We look forward to partnering with GSODA and watching this facility evolve into a vibrant community hub that supports creativity, connection and performance for years to come.”

GSODA Inc President Bernadette Uzelac AM

“For nearly 100 years GSODA has been at the heart of community theatre in Geelong. We are incredibly grateful to City of Greater Geelong for the opportunity to secure a permanent home for our young creatives aged 10–17. The City’s strong support for the performing arts, and particularly community youth theatre, is deeply appreciated. A permanent home will provide our young people with a dedicated space to learn, create, perform and develop their confidence and creativity, while helping to build the next generation of local performers and theatre-makers. This is an exciting opportunity for GSODA and the wider community, and we look forward to continuing our long-standing contribution to the cultural life of Geelong for many years to come.”

Spring into running season and be part of history Now spring has arrived, the countdown is on to the inaugural Geelong Running Festival. There’s less than two weeks to go until the city’s first marathon takes to the streets of Geelong, passing through iconic landmarks including Kardinia Park and the waterfront. Registrations to join this historic event are still open. One of the highlights of the course will be the “music mile” on Portarlington Road, with staggered entertainment keeping the vibes high as runners head towards Point Henry. The new festival is proudly supported through the City of Greater Geelong’s Major Events funding. The three-day program, from 18–20 September, puts competitive and recreational runners on the elite stage. Friday 18 September • Brooks Running expo Saturday 19 September • Brooks Running expo • GYG Kids 800m • GYG Kids 1 mile • GYG All abilities 1 mile

Registrations, scheduling, course maps and road closures are on the Geelong Running Festival website. Lee Troop, Geelong Running Festival

“To see Geelong host its very first marathon is a really special moment for the city and for everyone who loves running here. I’ve run marathons all over the world, but there’s something incredibly exciting about seeing one come to life in my own backyard. We’ve designed a course that celebrates Geelong, taking runners past some of our most iconic landmarks and giving them a real sense of the city along the way. I can’t wait to see that first field of marathoners line up and make history.” Cr Eddy Kontelj, Deputy Mayor and Sports & Recreation chair

Sunday 20 September • Henley Homes Community 6.5km • RedZed Half Marathon • RedZed Wheelchair Half Marathon • Zeekr Marathon

“The Geelong Running Festival is a fantastic new addition to our major events calendar and a great way to welcome spring and get people moving.

The courses have been expertly designed by local distance-running legend and three-time Olympian Lee Troop.

Marathon runners are passionate travellers who are always looking for new destinations, new challenges and new events to add to their running calendars. I am confident Geelong will attract participants from across Australia and around the world who are seeking a fresh and exciting marathon experience, while adding another hard-earned medal to their collection.

All races on Sunday 20 September include the exclusive opportunity to run on the grass at GMHBA Stadium. The marquee event kicks off running season in the region, with local park and charity runs filling the calendar throughout the warmer months and more people getting out and about on the City’s many trails.

It will bring elite and recreational runners together with the broader community, showcasing Geelong as a great place to live, visit and get active.

The festival is also a wonderful opportunity to introduce visitors to everything our region has to offer, from our stunning waterfront and beautiful landscapes to our hospitality, accommodation and local businesses. We’re proud to support an event that will not only put Geelong on the running map but help build on our strong and growing running culture right across the region, while delivering valuable economic and tourism benefits for our community.”

Budget boost to help attract world-class events to Geelong More major community, sporting and cultural events are on their way to Greater Geelong, helping create unforgettable experiences for residents and visitors while providing a boost to the local economy.

In 2024-25, GME-supported events delivered a $93 million economic boost to Greater Geelong, cementing the region’s standing as one Australia’s strongest and most diverse event destinations.

Each year, the City attracts a full calendar of nationally and internationally recognised experiences, reinforcing Geelong’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading regional event destinations. These events boost visitation to the region and support local businesses by generating overnight stays, employment opportunities and spending in local hospitality and retail businesses. Beyond the economic benefits, events bring our community together, create opportunities for participation in worldclass experiences close to home and showcase the region to national and international audiences. To ensure these benefits continue to be felt, the City has allocated $1.3 million through the 2026-27 Budget to support the attraction and retention of major events that contribute to a vibrant local economy and strengthen community connections. The 2026-27 events calendar is already shaping up to be another standout year for the region, with IRONMAN 70.3, Festival of Sails, AUSX Open, Spilt Milk, Geelong Running Festival, Wonder Children’s Festival and the 2027 Vic Open Golf Tournament already locked in. As Australia’s biggest single-day music festival, Spilt Milk alone is set to inject $15.5 million into the local economy and attract more than 30,000 visitors to the region, driving spending across accommodation, hospitality, retail and transport. Through the festival’s five-year partnership with the City, it’s expected to generate $94.3 million for the local economy, attract 176,070 visitors and secure 18,579 visitor stays, highlighting the long-term value of securing and retaining major events. The City’s Geelong Major Events Committee (GME) plays a key role in identifying, attracting and retaining events that enhance the region’s profile, stimulate economic activity and contribute to community vibrancy.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM “Major events help showcase Greater Geelong to new audiences while delivering real benefits for local businesses and the broader economy. Continued investment ensures we remain a destination of choice for major sporting, cultural and entertainment events.” Geelong Major Events Committee Chair Councillor Andrew Katos “We’ve built a strong reputation for attracting events that not only deliver economic benefits but also create opportunities for our community to come together and enjoy world-class experiences. Having access to these experiences close to home is part of what makes Greater Geelong such a vibrant and connected community.”

Going above and beyond for water safety Leisurelink Aquatic and Recreation Centre has once again been named Swim and Survive Partner of the Year at the recent Life Saving Victoria (LSV) awards. The prestigious honour, last awarded to our Webstar’s Swim School in 2023, demonstrates the City’s Swim Sport & Leisure team’s ongoing commitment to educating community members about how to be safe around the water. Classes are vital to helping children, international students and new residents unfamiliar with our region’s beaches and waterways to learn the fundamentals of swimming, essential water safety skills and what to do if they get into trouble. Children as young as six months of age can join and instructors help each student to gain confidence and achieve their goals faster through Royal Life Saving Australia’s evidence-based Swim and Survive program. The news follows Leisurelink’s Swim School Award win at the Aquatic Recreation Victoria (ARV) Industry Awards in June for improvements that helped students progress through swimming levels faster while maintaining high-quality instruction.

Thanks to assessment scheduling, class structure and parent engagement changes, the number of weeks spent in a swim level dropped by 10.4 weeks on average, with some levels decreasing by 28 weeks.

Leisurelink was also recognised for delivering accessible, inclusive and culturally safe swim lessons, while achieving a record 3,628 enrolments in 2025.

Councillor Elise Wilkinson, Connewarre Ward

“Webstar’s Swim School at Leisurelink is among the largest in Australia with 110,830 visitations in 2025, on top of lessons at the centre to more than 5,100 primary school students. Across both programs, there were more than 137,000 swimming lesson attendances. To be recognised with two major awards is an incredible achievement for the entire Leisurelink team and demonstrates that our focus on quality swimming education and water safety is making a genuine difference.”

Deputy Mayor and Sport & Recreation portfolio chair Eddy Kontelj:

“A big thank you to our Leisurelink and Webstar’s Swim School staff for their dedication and encouragement of students. Swimming lessons are so important as we move into warmer weather and like any sport or activity, regular practice is the key to improvement. LET’S GET MOVING ON NEW TRAVEL LINKS BETWEEN GEELONG AND TORQUAY Sustainable, car-free connections between Geelong and Torquay would be a gamechanger for Victoria’s fastest growing communities. The City and Surf Coast Shire councils are seeking $12.5 million for detailed planning and design for a staged delivery of a public transport vehicle-only corridor that would link Marshall Station and Armstrong Creek Town Centre, with potential to then run parallel with the Surf Coast Highway to Torquay. City of Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM said the proposal was essential infrastructure for high-density housing developments, reducing traffic congestion and providing an efficient connection for residents and visitors. In addition, Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire councils are also advocating for a Geelong-Torquay safe cycling link - an off-road shared path adjacent to Horseshoe Bend Road. Surf Coast Shire Mayor Libby Stapleton said public transport and active travel connections must be part of the state’s long-term plan for the region.

The City of Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire are together calling for bipartisan government support to invest in a rapid transit corridor between municipalities. “Greater Geelong and the Surf Coast are among Victoria’s fastest-growing regions, with Armstrong Creek expected to exceed 55,000 residents. With land already reserved between Marshall Station and Armstrong Creek Town Centre, the project has a strong foundation for future delivery and reduced planning risk. We need to look at other cities to see how people move around. I’d like to explore whether a trackless tram, a light rail like the one operating at Glenelg in Adelaide, or something similar would work here.” “The Surf Coast is one of Victoria’s most valued places to live, work, study and visit, and we need transport infrastructure that keeps pace with our growth and supports our future. With some innovative thinking and smart planning, we can come up with a solution that will serve our communities well for generations to come.” Find out more about the two Priority Projects on our advocacy page.

NOT-FOR-PROFIT Whether you live in a townhouse in Newtown, run a farm out past Bannockburn, park on the street in Belmont or manage a shop on Pakington Street, the same simple truth applies: most break-ins and thefts are opportunistic, and most are preventable. Neighbourhood Watch Victoria’s free online tool, How Safe Is My Place, helps you spot the gaps before an opportunist does. Answer a short set of questions about your home, apartment, farm, vehicle or business, and receive a personalised safety score with practical, prioritised steps to close the gaps.

Community Safety For The Geelong Community Know Your Risk. Know Your Neighbours. Introducing How Safe Is My Place, a free online safety check for every part of Geelong life

One theme runs through every module: look out for your neighbours, and let them look out for you. A watchful street, a connected farming community and a business strip that knows its neighbours are consistently harder targets for opportunistic crime. But beyond that shared principle, the top three tactics change depending on where you are; here’s what How Safe Is My Place recommends for each.

HOUSE •

Secure all entry points, including side gates and second-storey windows, not just the front door

•

Use timer lights and a visibly occupied look when you’re away

•

Trim hedges and fences below window height so neighbours can see your property

APARTMENT •

Never let an unknown person “tailgate” through the security door behind you

•

Store parcels and bikes out of view of common-area windows

•

Report broken intercoms, lifts or foyer lights to the body corporate immediately

SEPTEMBER 2026 EDITION

OF THE MONTH FARM • • •

Mark tools, machinery and livestock with property ID or SelectaDNA so stolen items are traceable Lock sheds, gates and fuel stores, even for short trips into town Log unfamiliar vehicles or activity and share it with neighbouring properties and police

VEHICLE • • •

Always lock up and remove keys, including spare fobs left in the house near the door Never leave bags, tools or electronics visible on seats, even for “just a minute” Park in well-lit, overlooked spots rather than dark or secluded corners

BUSINESS • • •

Separate cash handling from public view and vary banking times and routes Keep stockrooms, loading docks and rear doors locked during trading hours Build relationships with neighbouring traders to flag suspicious activity quickly

Special Feature o Local care, national impact: How BaptistCare is strengthening support for Geelong families Chances are, someone in your street has a Baptcare story. You’ve probably heard the name - perhaps from a neighbour whose father moved into an aged care home recently, or maybe it was from a friend whose home care worker turns up every Tuesday, kettle straight on, ready for a chat before getting stuck into the housework. In March 2025, Baptcare merged with BaptistCare NSW, ACT and WA, bringing two of Australia’s leading care providers together under one national name: BaptistCare. Right across the Geelong region, the same trusted local organisation is still hard at work - and now, backed by a national network, it’s set to make an even bigger impact. Baptcare’s roots in Victoria go back to 1945, when a group of Baptist women raised £4,000 in a time of war to open Strathalan residential aged care, Australia’s first Baptist home for older people – a place that continues to be a thriving aged care home to this day. Eight decades on, that same spirit of neighbours looking out for neighbours continues to shape how our organisation operates. Today, more than 78,000 customers and 12,000 employees, supported by nearly 2000 volunteers, make up BaptistCare communities right across the country. For Geelong families, this means the same local care they’ve always trusted, now with the weight of a national network behind local teams and familiar faces. How BaptistCare is supporting Geelong seniors

For older members of the community, that local care often starts at home – perhaps with a bit of extra help getting the groceries home and packed away, or someone to drive you to your doctor’s appointment. It might be nursing care to manage a health concern - or physiotherapy to help you get back to doing what you love – all delivered in the comfort of your own home. As your needs change over time, so does our support, with a broad range of tailored services that can help you to live independently at home for longer.

of the Month And if more comprehensive support is ever needed, BaptistCare Coasthaven residential aged care home in Norlane offers relaxed coastal living with care available day and night, just a stone’s throw from Corio Beach Foreshore and minutes from downtown Geelong. It’s a beautiful home, where you can feel safe and supported among a friendly resident community. There’s always something going on at Coasthaven, whether that’s the afternoon happy hour, arts and crafts sessions, gardening, or regular screenings of the AFL! There’s also plenty of comfortable sitting rooms to relax in and enjoy the peace and quiet. Supporting families and communities across Victoria

SEPTEMBER 2026 EDITION

A new chapter, same commitment to Geelong Becoming part of a national organisation has given BaptistCare greater scale and stability. But here in Geelong, it’s the same people, the same values, and the same commitment to this community, just under a new name. We’re still just neighbours looking out for neighbours and would love to connect with you if you need a little extra support.

Need a little extra support at home? Our home care team travel across the region to support older people to stay independent, safe and connected to their community. Thinking about aged care? If you or someone you love are finding it a challenge to live independently at home, BaptistCare Coasthaven residential aged care home in Norlane is a place where you can be part of a warm, welcoming community and receive care whenever you need it. Coasthaven is home to beautiful gardens and grounds, comfortable sitting rooms to relax in with a good book, and there is a vibrant activity schedule if you feel like socialising. If you’d like to book a tour, or have questions, please call our friendly team on 13 22 78 or visit baptcare.org. au/residential-aged-care/norlane-coasthaven for more information. BaptistCare’s commitment to community reaches well beyond aged care. Through our foster care, kinship care and family support services, we work alongside vulnerable children, young people and families across Victoria, helping to create nurturing, stable environments where they can thrive and reach their full potential. That same commitment extends to our affordable housing across Metropolitan Melbourne, Greater Geelong and regional Victoria which provides well-located, well-built homes for people on lower incomes. We believe affordable housing is a basic human right, and as a registered housing provider, we’re proud to play a critical role in supporting people impacted by the housing affordability crisis.

2026 SPAN Suicide Awareness Walk Sunday, 13 September, 07:00 - 10:30 (PHT)

Hope Bereavement Care and the Geelong-based Suicide Prevention Awareness Network (SPAN) invite you to the SPAN Suicide Awareness Walk, held annually since 2010. The 2026 SPAN Suicide Awareness Walk will take place on Sunday 13 September 2026 from 9:00am at Eastern Park (pavilion behind the Geelong Botanic Gardens, on the bay side) in East Geelong. A dream of SPAN’s founding members, the Suicide Awareness Walk is a positive and active family and community event where people directly or indirectly affected by suicide can come together and pay tribute to lost loved ones, offer support to those who are hurting and, ultimately, embrace the gift of life. It is a safe and welcoming space that aims to reduce stigma and raise awareness around suicide and to encourage connection with others on the same grief journey. There is no cost to register for the event. We do invite participants to donate to Hope Bereavement Care and help continue our much-needed work supporting those who have experienced the suicide death of a loved one. Visit our SPAN Suicide Awareness Walk page on the GiveNow platform to make a donation or create a CrowdRaiser in memory of those who have been lost. 2026 SPAN Suicide Awareness Walk schedule: • 9:00am: Last-minute registrations (please register via this platform in advance, if possible) • 9:30am: Welcome to Country • 9:45am: Remembrance ceremony, including release of doves and reading of loved ones’ names • 10:00am: Walk (approximately 1.2km) • 11:30am-12:30pm: Free barbeque

WORKPLACE WELLBEING Laughter yoga can be a great fit for workplace wellbeing. This is in addition to recreational settings such as those that Laughter Club Geelong offers every Saturday morning at Eastern Beach. When presented in the workplace laughter yoga gives teams the opportunity to pause, reset, reconnect and recharge – while bringing a little more fun and positive energy into the workplace. A real cardio workout is good for our physical wellbeing and participation in a laughter yoga session is one of the platforms where you can get all the scientifically proven health benefits of laughter. Laughter is more than just a reaction to something funny; it is a bridge, it connects us, lightens our shared burdens, and reminds us that there is always room for joy, even in the smallest moments, darkest moment. When we laugh, we know even this will pass and we don’t just feel better individually – we create an environment where others feel safe to do the same. People working from home who participate in a laughter yoga session often comment how they feel connected and less isolated after interacting with other members of staff. It is not just about getting together, having fun, moving your body and sharing a good laugh. By introducing Laughter Yoga as a wellbeing activity people can benefit in many ways such as to – • • • • • •

Reduce everyday stress and tension Lift their mood and energy levels Take a mental break from their normal routine Develop a greater sense of positivity Experience a different approach to wellbeing Finish their session feeling refreshed energised and uplifted.

Participants after a laughter yoga session feel it has improved efficiency, performance and energy. They feel energetic and can work to their full potential without getting tired. Laughter club is a social practice of laughter exercises and mindful breathwork for all abilities and ages and can be done seated which means it can be done in person or virtually. Want to try a laughter session before introducing one into your workplace wellness program? Come and experience the joy for yourself one Saturday morning at 9:00am for half an hour at Eastern Beach in front of the swimming enclosure. GEELONG NFP N 10. Security Signage

Ten easy DIY home security jobs to do on the weekend

Display visible signs and stickers indicating that a security system protects your home. This can act as a deterrent to potential intruders and make them think twice before attempting a break-in. You can request Neighbourhood Watch stickers for free if you email admin@nhw.com.au for you to have on your window. If you are still unsure, request a quote with our partner, RACV to find the right and tailored solution for your home https:// www.racv.com.au/home/home-security/ alarm-systems Take our How Safe Is My Place quiz for more information on keeping your home safe https://howsafeismyplace.com.au/ house/

A home is burgled about every 20 minutes in Victoria. We’ve got 8 quick security fixes you can put on your weekend jobs’ list to make your home more burglar-proof. 1.

Get rid of the hidden house key

Most people have a spare key hidden somewhere outside their home. Burglars know all the hiding spots, even the notso-common ones. So take your spare and give it to a neighbour, friend or family member you trust. 2.

Light up your entry

Test exterior lights at night to check that they’re working and provide enough illumination. Consider installing flood or motion sensor lights around front and rear entries, in your drive way and in any dark spots. 3.

Trim shrubs to cut down hiding spots

Trim any shrubs and trees that are in front of windows, gates and entries so that crooks don’t have a place to hide. Aim to have a clear line of sight from your front door and windows to the street. 4.

Grow plants that burglars hate

Plant thorny or prickly shrubs and plants such as cacti, native blackthorn, native raspberry or Mount Blackwood holly under windows to make your home even less appealing to burglars.

5.

Stop sliding doors in their tracks

Install a piece of wooden dowel into the track of a sliding glass door or window to stop it from being forced open. Choose dowel that is thinner than the track and cut it to be around 1cm shorter, so that it fits snugly. 6. Check your locks are working effectively Do a stock-take of your door and window locks. Fix or replace any broken locks and upgrade any weak ones with stronger keyed locks, deadbolts or keypad locks. 7.

Make it harder for crooks to see in

Install one-way blinds on your windows to let natural light in but keep prying eyes out. 8.

Strengthen your external doors

Upgrade your door fittings and hardware to make it harder for crooks to force their way in. Replace screws in hinges and strike plates with ones that are at least 80cm long. If your hinges only have 4 or 6 screw holes, replace them with ones that have 8 or 10. And invest in a good quality steel box strike plate for your door latch. 9. Secure your property’s gates and sheds Lock all gates – front, side and back gates using good quality locks. And don’t forget the garden shed.

NEWS & STORIES

SEPTEMBER 2026

Finishing strong on the slopes

By the final day,the growth in each participant was clear to see:

“I am so glad I did not give up after falling over a hundred times,” said Trey through one of the biggest smiles you are likely to see. “I am so proud of myself for pushing through the pain and overcoming my sore knee,” said Leroy who had definitely caught the snowboarding bug. The Mount Bulla Snow Camp is a special milestone for our second-year REEF participants, giving many young people the opportunity to experience the snow and learn to snowboard for the very first time. As part of Cottage by the Sea’s REEF program, the camp encourages participants to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence and discover what they can achieve through perseverance and adventure.

Perhaps one of the most powerful reflections came from another participant, who recognised just how much they had achieved over the course of the week: “Getting to overcome initial fear and constantly falling and wanting to give up, but then realising that if I kept trying, I could achieve little wins and eventually learnt a new sport that I would never have had the chance to do without being a part of REEF program.”

This year’s camp was made even more special, with four young people from our Mentor Program who joined the trip for the first time. Selected for their outstanding attendance across Cottage by the Sea programs and their demonstrated leadership qualities, these mentors played an important role in supporting and encouraging the Reefies throughout the week. Their presence also highlighted the next step in the Cottage by the Sea journey, showcasing how REEF graduates can progress into the Mentor Program. Through this program, young people are encouraged to actively contribute to their school, community, home and Cottage by the Sea. After a full week of learning to snowboard, the Reefies woke to beautiful sunshine for their final day on the mountain. With plenty of sore muscles well earned, the goal was to get everyone confidently using the chairlifts and make the most of every last minute on the slopes. While there were some tentative first attempts loading and unloading from the chairlifts, confidence quickly grew. Before long, participants were tackling longer runs and putting into practice the skills they had worked so hard to develop throughout the week. The fears, falls and frustrations of the early days had been replaced with excitement, determination and a real sense of achievement.

These reflections capture exactly why the REEF program exists. Across two years, participants are supported to develop confidence, self-motivation, problem-solving skills and stronger connections with their peers, schools and communities. Snow camp challenged the Reefies physically and mentally, but it also showed them that persistence, courage and a willingness to keep trying can lead to growth. As they completed their final runs, the Reefies left with more than just new snowboarding skills. They returned home with greater confidence, resilience and the knowledge that they can achieve more than they thought possible. https://www.cottagebythesea.com.au/

Being Emotionally Available for our Children Justin Coulson has written a brilliant little book entitled, ‘What your child needs from you.’ The opening chapter talks about the importance of being available emotionally for our children. We’re often not available emotionally because we’re not in the right head space – we’re too busy, we’re too preoccupied with something else or we forget how important it is to give our children our undivided attention. Another issue is that our children want our attention at seemingly the most inopportune times. Even though my four children are grown up and are almost totally independent from my wife and I, sometimes when they call on the phone I’m mildly annoyed because I’m in the middle of something ‘important’. Each time they call, I have to remind myself that they are more important than the mundane thing that I’m doing. I need to stop and give them my full attention, otherwise I’ll miss the moment – a golden opportunity to connect with my children. Coulson states that children who have parents / carers that give them their full attention on a regular basis are able to say: • My parents / carers support me • My parents / carers console me when I am upset • My parents / carers show they care about me • My parents / show a genuine interest in me • My parents / carers remember things that are important to me • My parents / carers are available to talk to me at any time • My parents / carers spend extra time with me just because they want to • My parents / carers ask questions in a caring manner • My parents / carers are willing to talk about my troubles • My parents / carers talk with me about my interests • My parents / carers value my input • My parents / carers make me feel wanted Evidence indicates that children who’ve had the privilege of parents / carers who have done the above have a greater self-confidence, are more resilient, better learners, have superior social skills and are better able to handle their emotions than children who haven’t. So, if we’re too busy to give our children our full attention then perhaps we’re too busy and we need to slow down or change our priorities. One story that Coulson recounts is of a mother who attended one of his workshops who shared the following: After learning about being emotionally available with my children, I decided that I would turn off the television at meal times and that we would talk. One night I asked my children what had been good about their day. As they talked, I felt great to be having these conversations with them. When it was my eldest daughter’s turn to tell me about what the best part of the day was, she looked at me and quietly said, ‘Right now, mum’. All the best everyone. Rob. LPS Chaplain. 2026 Geelong Science & Engineering Challenge

A fantastic night at Pitch Up 2026! Andrea, Liz, Jenny and our bear joined hundreds at the Geelong Library for an inspiring, fun and uplifting event. Rotary Barwon Geelong donated $1,000 to each organisation — matched to $6,000 — helping Cultura, Killara Foundation and Cloverdale Community Centre continue their amazing work empowering women in our community. Proud to be part of a night that raised almost $100,000 for local impact.

What a day at Ocean Grove Bike Park Perfect weather, huge crowds, and a BBQ team that absolutely smashed it. We kicked off with supplies for 200… and were swamped before we even started. With CoGG’s blessing we doubled the order, fired up the grill, and the crew went into full action mode — cooking, prepping, serving, and keeping the line moving. The queue snaked up the hill, but the vibe stayed brilliant. Families, kids, everyone patient, polite, and full of good energy. Huge thanks to the Ocean Grove community for making it such a positive day. Great to see so many Police members there too — friendly, engaged, and grabbing a well‑earned sausage when they could. Only photos wasn’t until pack‑up because we were flat out the whole time.

What an incredible two days at the 2026 Geelong Science & Engineering Challenge!

Massive thanks to the whole team for an awesome effort.

350 students, 14 schools, huge energy, big ideas, and outstanding teamwork. Congratulations to our winning schools: Geelong Grammar – Corio Campus and St Joseph’s College Geelong. Proudly delivered with our partners: Deakin University, GHD Consulting, Hanwha Defence Australia, IXL, and the Rotary Clubs of Geelong & District. RUN, JUMP AND THROW

- LITTLE ATHS IS LOADS OF FUN! Little athletics summer season is not far away and Viva Energy Athletics Arena will soon be a hive of activity on Saturday mornings. A variety of events are offered with the focus on athletes improving their personal best (PB). Under 6 athletes begin with distances of 50m-300m, mini hurdles, long jump, shot put and discus. At appropriate ages, hurdles, race walks, triple jump, high jump, javelin and longer running distances are added. All-Abilities athletes are welcomed and supported. This may require reasonable adjustments to events or equipment to help them safely and confidently compete, and families are encouraged to suggest ways to assist their athletes. All athletes are encouraged to try all events, but if there is something they do not like, they do not have to. Free optional after school training sessions are offered to all athletes. U9 and above train on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a session for younger athletes is offered on Wednesdays teaching fundamental skills for each event. Athletes can attend regularly or casually. Sessions rotate through different event skills, as well as general fitness activities with a focus on having fun. Corio has an enthusiastic team of coaches, who have great rapport with the athletes and the number of personal bests and other achievements last summer was amazing.

“Little Aths” as it is known is a fun, social sport all the family can participate in together. Unlike many other sports where parents cheer from the sidelines or record the scores, athletics provides many opportunities to be involved “hands on”. Adults are asked to take turns helping with tasks such as raking sand, picking up throws equipment, replacing the high jump bar etc for their own athlete’s events. Adults keen to learn to officiate, race start etc are welcomed and supported to learn these roles. Athletes love having their family members out there with them, and adults enjoy being close to the action. Athletes under 9 and above may choose to compete in Region level events, and athletes have a lot of fun competing as “Team Corio”, however many athletes choose to compete only locally for fun and self-improvement. Corio encourages and supports all athletes to compete within their own comfort level. Through the support of the Corio Centre’s sponsors, entry fees to several Region level events are subsidised to encourage participation. The season starts with a Come & Try day on Saturday September 19 for potential athletes to try some events, and families can also meet coaches and other centre representatives. A trial registration is required prior to attending, and a further 2 free trial weeks are offered once the season starts on October 3. Little Athletics Vic registration of $89 includes both summer track and field, and the winter cross-country season. The Corio Centre fee is $60 and a uniform top costs $20. For eligible families, the State Government $200 “Get Active Kids” vouchers will cover all the above and are available from September. Why not give it a try? LEOPOLD LITTLE ATHL

CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF COMMUNIT

For 50 years, Leopold Little Athletics Club has been helping local kids get active, build confidence and discover a love of sport. Established in 1976, the club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of supporting young athletes and bringing families together through sport.

What makes Leopold Little Athletics so special is that it’s about much more than winning medals. It’s a place where children can learn new skills, make friends, stay active and have fun in a welcoming and supportive environment. The club caters for children aged 5 to 17 and encourages athletes of all abilities to have a go and do their best.

Unlike many sports that focus on just one activity, Little Athletics gives children the chance to try a wide range of events including running, jumping and throwing. Whether it’s sprinting down the track, tackling a relay, clearing a high jump or throwing a shot put, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Competition takes place on Saturday mornings at John Landy Athletics Field in South Geelong, where athletes compete alongside children from other clubs across the region. The club also runs weekly training sessions every Wednesday from 4.15 pm to 5.15 pm at the Leopold Primary School Athletics Track, allowing athletes to improve their skills and build confidence.

As the club looks ahead to its next 50 years, it remains committed to helping local children enjoy the benefits of sport, including fitness, resilience, teamwork and friendship. The recent anniversary celebrations were a reminder of the many families, volunteers and young athletes who have helped make the club such an important part of the Leopold community.

Registrations for the current season are open now, and new athletes can take advantage of two free trial sessions before joining.

Relaxed performances provide a specially adapted show in a comfortable, supportive environment. During a Relaxed Performance, house lights remain dim, volume may be softened, and audiences can come and go as needed. A designated chill-out space is available for breaks. The atmosphere is non-judgmental and we embrace noisy enthusiasm. Audience members can also bring their headphones to reduce noise. Though designed to support individuals with Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, and sensory sensitivities, Relaxed Performances offer a laid-back theatre experience any family can enjoy. They’re ideal for parents introducing babies or energetic toddlers to live theatre in a flexible setting.

Have you ever thought about colour? What makes the blue sky turn pink in the evening? What makes green summer trees turn orange in autumn?

Estate planning

How will decisions affect the surviving spouse and eventual beneficiaries?

By Warren Strybosch

Why planning for aged care should be part of your retirement plan For many Australians, aged care is something they hope they will never need. It is understandable. Retirement is usually about enjoying life — travelling, spending time with family, pursuing hobbies and making the most of the years after work. But one of the biggest financial decisions a person may eventually face is what happens when they can no longer live independently. The decision to receive care at home or move into residential aged care is not simply a lifestyle decision. It can also have a significant impact on your finances. The choices you make about your home, superannuation, investments, cash and the way you pay for care can affect: • • • • • •

how much you pay for aged care; how much income you have available; your eligibility for the Age Pension and other government benefits; how long your retirement savings last; the financial position of your spouse or partner; and ultimately, how much wealth you are able to pass on to your family.

This is where financial advice can add real value.

There is rarely one answer that is automatically right for everyone. Two people entering the same aged care home could make completely different financial decisions because their circumstances are different.

The Australian Government itself recognises that aged care decisions can have significant financial consequences. My Aged Care recommends considering independent financial advice when deciding how to pay for aged care, particularly residential accommodation.

The importance of planning before the decision is urgent

The important point is that aged care planning should ideally begin before the crisis occurs.

At that point, there may be very little time to make considered decisions.

One of the biggest mistakes families make is waiting until a parent is in hospital or can no longer safely live at home before considering the financial implications.

Time to understand the options. Time to compare aged-care facilities. Time to understand the likely costs. Time to consider the impact on the Age Pension. Time to determine which assets should be retained and which could be used to fund care. And, importantly, time to make decisions without feeling pressured. My Aged Care encourages people to plan ahead and specifically recommends considering future care costs as part of retirement planning.

Understanding the interaction between aged care and your finances When someone needs care, the immediate focus is understandably on finding somewhere safe and appropriate. But there is another question that needs to be asked: The aged-care system is means tested. This means your income and assets can influence how much you may be required to contribute towards your care. For Support at Home, contributions can depend on the type of service being provided as well as your income and assets. For residential aged care, your means assessment can influence the contributions you pay and the assistance you receive towards accommodation. This is why simply asking: “How much does aged care cost?” does not always produce a useful answer.

They find an aged care facility they like and the agreed room price is $600,000. The family initially assumes the obvious solution is to sell investments and pay the $600,000 accommodation amount. But this is where advice becomes important. There are a number of questions that should be considered before simply selling assets. What happens to Mary’s cash flow? If $600,000 is removed from their investment portfolio, what income will remain available to Mary? What happens to their Age Pension? Changing the ownership and composition of their assets can affect their government benefits. What happens to the family home? Should Mary continue living there? Could it eventually be rented? What happens if Mary later moves into care herself?

A better question is:

What is the most appropriate way to fund John’s accommodation?

“How much is aged care likely to cost someone in my particular financial circumstances, and how should I structure my finances to meet those costs?”

The family may have different payment options available, and the decision should consider not just the immediate cash requirement but the longer-term financial consequences.

That is a financial planning question.

My Aged Care notes that accommodation payment options should be considered carefully and recommends independent financial advice when deciding which option is appropriate.

An example: when the same aged-care room can produce very different outcomes Consider John and Mary.

What advice could change Suppose the family is considering two broad strategies.

However, it also means: • investments are reduced; • future investment income may fall; • capital growth potential may be reduced; and • there may be tax consequences from selling investments. Strategy B — Retain some investments and structure the accommodation funding differently Instead, the family may determine that retaining a portion of their investments provides Mary with a more appropriate income stream and financial buffer. The result might look something like this:

This table is illustrative only. The most appropriate strategy depends on the individual’s circumstances, the aged care agreement, available payment options, taxation, Age Pension position, investment returns, cash-flow requirements and estateplanning objectives.

The decision can affect more than just the value of the estate. It can also interact with the Age Pension and aged care means testing. For example, the treatment of the family home can depend on the circumstances surrounding the person’s move into aged care and what happens to the property afterwards. MoneySmart notes that keeping or selling the home can affect Age Pension treatment, while the treatment of the home can also differ depending on whether it is retained or rented. This is why selling the home simply because “we need the money for aged care” may not always be the best first step. What about the Age Pension? The Age Pension can become an important part of the financial equation. A person entering aged care may experience changes to: • their assessable assets; • their income; • their accommodation arrangements; • their marital circumstances; and • the treatment of their home. These changes can influence their government benefits. This creates an important interaction: Aged care decision -- Financial structure -- Means testing -- Government benefits -- Retirement income A good financial plan considers all of these components together rather than treating aged care fees as an isolated expense. Support at Home: planning for care at home Aged care planning isn’t only about residential aged care. Many Australians want to remain in their own home for as long as possible. The Support at Home program provides government-funded support for eligible people who need assistance to remain living at home.

The point is that there is a decision to be made.

Under the current arrangements, the amount a person contributes depends on factors including the type of service they receive and their income and assets. Clinical supports are fully government funded, while contributions can apply to independence and everyday living services.

Without advice, families can sometimes make a decision simply because it appears to be the easiest option.

The financial impact can therefore vary considerably between individuals.

The family home can be one of the biggest decisions

For example:

For many retirees, the family home is their largest asset.

When one member of a couple moves into residential aged care, the question of what happens to the home becomes particularly important. Should the home be: • retained? • sold? • rented? • transferred? • renovated? • used as a source of funds?

Illustrative annual cash flow

This is another example of why aged-care planning needs to be reviewed regularly. The rules can change, and a strategy that made sense several years ago may not be appropriate today. The value of modelling different scenarios One of the most useful things a financial adviser can do is model different scenarios. Instead of saying: “You have enough money to pay for aged care.” a better approach is to ask: “What happens to your finances over the next 5, 10 or 15 years under different care and investment scenarios?”

The difference is significant. At $20,000 a year, the capital requirement is manageable. At $55,000 a year, the family may need to reconsider how their assets are structured.

For example: Scenario modelling Scenario

What could be modelled?

This is where an adviser can model how long the money may last and whether changes should be made to the investment strategy, cash reserves or other assets. Aged care planning is also about protecting the spouse

One spouse enters care

Financial pos

Both spouses eventually require care

Long-term sustainability of assets

This type of modelling can be particularly valuable because the outcome is not simply about the first year.

One of the most overlooked aspects of aged care planning is the person who remains at home. When one spouse enters residential care, the financial position of the remaining spouse can change dramatically. They may suddenly have: • one income instead of two; • additional household expenses: • aged-care costs for their partner; • responsibility for maintaining the family home; • reduced access to investment income; and • concerns about their own future care needs. A strategy that is financially efficient for the person entering care may not necessarily be the best strategy for the couple. The objective should be to look at the financial position of both people. What about the children’s inheritance? Inheritance is understandably important to many families. However, aged care planning should not be driven solely by the desire to maximise an inheritance.

It is about what happens to the family financially over time.

The first priority should be ensuring that the person requiring care has access to appropriate care and that the surviving spouse has financial security.

A simple illustration of why cash flow matters

That said, good planning can sometimes achieve both objectives.

Imagine Mary has $800,000 available to fund her retirement.

For example, careful consideration of: • which assets are sold; • how investments are structured; • how accommodation is funded; • the treatment of the family home; • taxation; • superannuation; • pension entitlements; and • estate-planning arrangements

She needs $70,000 a year to meet her lifestyle and other expenses. If her investments and pensions provide $50,000 of income, she needs to draw another $20,000 each year from her capital. If John subsequently enters residential aged care and Mary’s expenses increase, the amount she needs to withdraw may increase significantly.

may help avoid unnecessarily reducing the family’s wealth.

SEPTEMBER 2026 | FIND GEELONG 75

The objective is not to “beat the aged-care system”.

The bottom line

It is to make informed decisions about how the family’s resources should be used.

Aged care is both a lifestyle decision and a financial decision.

Aged care planning should involve more than a financial adviser Good aged-care planning is often multidisciplinary. Depending on the circumstances, a family may need to involve: Financial adviser - To consider retirement income, investments, superannuation, Age Pension and aged-care funding strategies. Aged care adviser - To understand the available care options and compare providers and services. Accountant - To consider taxation consequences and the broader financial position. Solicitor - To review Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney and other legal arrangements. Family - To understand the person’s wishes and help make decisions when circumstances change. No one professional necessarily as all the answers. The best outcomes often come from having the right people working together. The biggest benefit may not be saving money Financial advice is sometimes judged by one question: “How much money will I save?” That is not always the best measure. The real value of advice may be: • avoiding a poor financial decision; • understanding the options before making a decision; • protecting the surviving spouse; • maintaining an appropriate income; • avoiding unnecessary asset sales; • understanding the impact on government benefits; • ensuring sufficient liquidity; • reducing financial stress for family members; and • providing confidence that the decisions being made are appropriate. When a family is dealing with aged care, certainty can be just as valuable as financial efficiency. Don’t wait until aged care becomes an emergency Aged care planning does not have to begin when someone receives an aged care assessment. It can begin years earlier. For someone in their 60s or 70s, the conversation might simply be: “What would happen financially if one of us needed care?” That question can lead to a much broader retirement planning discussion. It may involve building an appropriate cash reserve, reviewing investments, considering the ownership of assets, updating estate-planning documents and understanding how the family would fund care if circumstances changed. Then, if aged care is eventually required, the family already has a framework to work from.

The Australian aged-care system is complex, and the financial consequences can extend well beyond the fees charged by a care provider. The decision about whether to remain at home, move into residential care, retain or sell the family home, use superannuation, sell investments or use cash can have significant consequences for the person’s retirement income, government benefits and eventual estate. The value of financial advice is not simply in finding the cheapest way to pay for care. It is about stepping back and asking: “What is the best overall financial strategy for this person and their family?” That strategy should consider the person’s care needs, lifestyle, income, assets, spouse, government benefits and estateplanning objectives. Most importantly, it should be developed before the family is forced to make decisions under pressure. If you are approaching retirement or are concerned about how aged care could affect your finances, now is the time to start the conversation. A well-designed retirement and aged-care strategy can provide something that is difficult to put a dollar value on — confidence that you and your family will be financially prepared for whatever the future brings. The case studies are for illustrative purposes only and is based on specific assumptions. Outcomes will vary depending in idividual circumstances and assumptions used.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME TO RETIRE? RETIREMENT By Warren Strybosch

For many people, retirement is something they have looked forward to for years.

One useful starting point is the ASFA Retirement Standard. The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) publishes the Retirement Standard as a benchmark for the amount Australians may need to spend to achieve either a modest or comfortable lifestyle in retirement. The figures are updated quarterly and provide estimates for both singles and couples.

They imagine having more time to travel, spend time with family, pursue hobbies, play golf, volunteer, or simply enjoy a slower pace of life.

According to the March quarter 2026 figures, ASFA estimates the following annual budgets for Australians aged 65–84:

But when the time actually approaches, a surprisingly difficult question often arises:

Household

Modest lifestyle

Comfortable lifestyle

Single

$36,434

$55,923

Couple

$52,473

$78,566

“How do I know when it is the right time to retire?” There is no single answer. Retirement isn’t determined by a particular birthday, nor is it simply a question of whether you have reached a certain superannuation balance.

ASFA also provides a separate estimate for people who are renting privately, recognising that housing costs can have a substantial impact on the amount required in retirement.

The decision should consider your financial position, lifestyle, health, relationships, work satisfaction and what you actually want your retirement to look like.

These figures are useful because they demonstrate an important point:

The first question: Can you afford to retire? This is usually where the retirement conversation begins. Before deciding to leave the workforce, you need to understand how much income you are likely to need and where that income will come from.

There is no single amount of money that everyone needs to retire. Your required retirement income depends heavily on the lifestyle you want and your personal circumstances. Someone who owns their home outright may have very different expenses from someone who is still paying a mortgage or renting.

Depending on your circumstances, retirement resources may include superannuation, savings and investments. The family home may also affect retirement planning, but accessing its value may require a separate strategy and involves costs and risks.

Someone who wants to travel extensively may need substantially more than someone who is happy spending most of their time at home.

However, simply knowing that you have, for example, $1 million or $2 million in superannuation doesn’t tell you whether you can afford to retire.

The ASFA Retirement Standard can be a useful general benchmark. It is not a projection of an individual’s needs, and actual costs will depend on housing, health, location and lifestyle.

The more important question is: “How much income will I need from my investments each year?” Someone who wants to spend $50,000 a year in retirement has a very different financial position from someone who wants to spend $100,000 or $150,000 a year. What does a comfortable retirement actually cost?

ASFA’s figures are a guide—not a personal retirement plan

Your actual spending may be higher or lower. For example, a couple may want $100,000 a year because they intend to travel extensively during their 60s and early 70s. Another couple may be perfectly comfortable on $60,000 because their home is paid off, they don’t travel extensively and they have relatively modest lifestyle expenses.

The key is to work out what retirement means to you rather than simply adopting somebody else’s number.

You may have enough money to retire at 70, but that doesn’t necessarily mean waiting until 70 is the right decision.

You can view the current ASFA Retirement Standard w w w. s u p e ra n nu a t i o n .a s n .a u / c o n s u m e r s / re t i re m e n t standard/ as a useful starting point when considering your own retirement budget.

Likewise, someone in excellent health at 65 may decide that continuing to work is worthwhile.

Retirement is more than a financial decision One of the biggest mistakes people can make is assuming that retirement planning is simply about answering: “Do I have enough money?” Of course, having sufficient financial resources is critical. But retirement also involves a significant lifestyle change. Work provides much more than a salary. For many people, work provides: • Structure • Purpose • Social interaction • Achievement • Routine • Intellectual stimulation • A sense of identity When you stop working, all of these things can change. This is why another important question is: “What am I retiring to?” Rather than simply: “What am I retiring from?” Are you still enjoying work? There is nothing wrong with continuing to work if you enjoy it.

The important consideration is that time is an asset that cannot be saved for later. If you have always dreamed of travelling, for example, you need to consider whether you want to wait until your 70s or 80s before doing it. This doesn’t mean everyone should retire early. It simply means that financial decisions should be considered alongside your health, energy and ability to enjoy the lifestyle you have worked hard to achieve. Could you transition into retirement? Retirement doesn’t have to be an on/off switch. For some people, the ideal solution is a gradual transition. You might: • Reduce from five days to three days a week • Work shorter hours • Move into a consulting role • Start your own business • Take longer periods of leave • Change careers • Work seasonally • Volunteer For some people, a gradual transition may balance continued income and social connection with additional free time, although the outcome will depend on individual circumstances.

Retirement is not a competition.

You retain some employment income and social interaction while gaining considerably more free time.

Some people genuinely enjoy their careers and continue working well beyond traditional retirement ages.

It may provide practical insight into how you respond to having less work and more discretionary time.

Others reach a point where the financial benefits of working another year are outweighed by the lifestyle benefits of having more time.

If you reduce your working hours and discover that you love the extra time, you may decide you are ready to stop completely.

Ask yourself:

Alternatively, you may discover that you miss work and decide that continuing to work is the right choice.

“If I didn’t need the money, would I still want to work?” The answer can be revealing. If the answer is yes, there may be no reason to rush into full retirement. If the answer is no, you may wish to explore your options, including continuing work, reducing hours or retiring, having regard to your financial position, health and personal circumstances. What about your health?

What happens if you work for another five years? This is one of the most important questions to consider. Suppose you are 65 and financially able to retire today. You could retire now—or continue working until 70. Working longer may increase earnings and contributions and delay withdrawals. Outcomes are not guaranteed and should be weighed against tax, health, employment, market and lifestyle considerations.

Health is another important consideration. SEPTEMBER 2026 | FIND GEELONG

77

78 FIND GEELONG | SEPTEMBER 2026

But there is another side to the equation. You would also be giving up five years of retirement. This is where retirement planning becomes more than simply trying to maximise your superannuation balance. The objective isn’t necessarily to die with the biggest possible bank balance. The objective is to use your financial resources to create the life you want while maintaining an appropriate level of financial security. Your retirement spending may change over time It is also important to recognise that retirement spending isn’t necessarily constant. Some retirees experience changing activity and spending patterns over time. The timing, direction and size of those changes vary, and health or aged care costs may increase even when discretionary spending falls Don’t forget the unexpected A retirement plan also needs to consider what could go wrong. What if investment markets fall? A market decline early in retirement may have a greater impact where withdrawals are being made, although the effect depends on the portfolio, withdrawal pattern and subsequent returns. What if inflation remains high? The cost of maintaining your lifestyle may increase significantly over a long retirement. What if you live to 95 or 100? Your retirement resources may need to support you for longer than expected. Planning may also need to consider the Age Pension, other income, changing expenses and longevity risk. What if one partner needs aged care? Aged care can create significant additional financial costs and should be considered as part of longer-term retirement planning. What if you want to help your children? Many retirees provide financial assistance to adult children, whether through helping with a home deposit, grandchildren, education or other expenses. A good retirement plan should therefore include some flexibility rather than assuming everything will go exactly according to plan. A simple retirement readiness checklist This checklist is a general prompt only. It does not determine retirement readiness or recommend any tax, superannuation, investment or social security strategy.

Question

Yes/No

Do I know how much I will need to spend each year? Have I considered my desired lifesty le rather than simply using a generic figure? Do I have sufficient assets and income to support that lifestyle? Have I considered my potential Age Pension entitlement? Have I considered tax and superannuation strategies? Have I considered investment risk? Have I allowed for inflation? Have I considered how long my money may need to last? Have I considered healthcare and aged care costs? Do I have a plan for how I will spend my time? Have I discussed retirement with my partner? Would I be happier if I retired now rather than continuing to work? Could I transition gradually rather than stop working completely? Your answers may help identify matters requiring further consideration. They do not, by themselves, establish that you are financially or personally ready to retire. So, when is the right time to retire? There is no magic age. For some people, it will be 60. For others, 65, 67 or 70. For some, it may be even later. And for others, retirement may never mean stopping work completely. There is no universal “right time” to retire. The decision may involve financial capacity, desired lifestyle, health, family circumstances, work preferences and tolerance for uncertainty.

The First Look: Geelong Juggernaut Heads West The Cats are Semi-Final bound, with a trip to Perth awaiting on Friday night to face the Dockers

Geelong’s 2026 season continues and this week will bring another blockbuster battle, as the Cats head to Optus Stadium for the second time this year to take on Fremantle.

The Cats piled on a run of seven unanswered goals between the first and second quarters, stunning the ladder leaders to build nearly a five-goal buffer in the shadows of half time.

Jay Polkinghorne continues to impress the Cats faithful in what has been a sensational debut season at the elite level

Jay Polkinghorne has had a simply remarkable season of football. Highly touted coming into the year, the emerging forward played Geelong’s opening VFL game of the season and unfortunately suffered an injury, before returning in Round 11 and making another five appearances at VFL level. His stellar form was then rewarded with an AFL debut in Round 19 against St Kilda, with Polkinghorne not looking back and playing each of Geelong’s last seven matches, including Friday night’s Elimination Final victory over Carlton. It adds up to a total of 13 matches across the 2026 season, resulting in a perfect 13-0 record for Polkinghorne, who is yet to suffer a loss at either level in the campaign.

“I think we just needed to bring the “But eventually I got into the groove, it pressure,” Polkinghorne noted when took me a bit to get into the game. asked about what the forwards changed. “The boys, they were unreal. While he faced a significant battle against Carlton’s key defenders on Friday, Polkinghorne continued to fight both in the air and at ground level, managing to register four score involvements and also laying an equal game-high three tackles inside 50.

Geelong’s victory will now see them progress to a blockbuster Semi Final, as they prepare to take on the minor premiers, Fremantle, at Optus Stadium next weekend. With a spot in another Preliminary Final on the line, Polkinghorne said he is looking forward to the occasion and the build up to next week’s battle. “I have never played footy in Perth, so it will be a good experience for me,” Polkinghorne said. “It is something different, but we just take it day by day now.

Not in Barwon Heads Anymore: Wiltshire Flourishes on the Big Stage When Geelong needed a spark on Friday night, it came in the form of Oli Wiltshire who dominated in his first AFL Final There might be one or two differences between a Final at Barwon Heads and one at the MCG, but what certainly remained the same was the outstanding impact and skill of Oli Wiltshire. With the Cats off to a slow start and looking to work their way back into the contest, Wiltshire was one who got the ball rolling in the second term, providing two direct goal assists in the second quarter to help steady the ship. He continued to be influential right throughout the contest, clearly highlighted by his ability to put kicks in the right position and hit the leading forwards, finishing with a game and career-high four goal assists. Wiltshire also added a game-high 22 disposals and an equal game-high 12 score involvements, proving why he is so highly regarded within the club and more than justifying his selection in the team. Playing in front of a near-capacity crowd at the MCG, the emerging Cat said that his first AFL Final had a slightly different feel to his local days at Barwon Heads.

Wiltshire was also able to share the experience alongside fellow Finals debutants in Edwards and Jay Polkinghorne, noting how important the duo have been for the Cats in 2026. “They have been huge,” Wiltshire said.

“I was just saying to one of the boys before, I played a few finals at Barwon Heads, but nothing compares to that,” Wiltshire told Cats Media. “96,000, it is unbelievable. “The crowd was electric, hopefully we can get a few people over to Perth next week.”

“Mitch Edwards has come in this year, he has played the whole year and he has been great the whole year. “’Polky,’ I think he has played under 10 games. “He is only getting better and better, taking big clunks down forward for us and kicking goals. He is a star.”

Wiltshire’s performance was yet another nod to Geelong’s remarkable 2023 draft class, which also included Mitch Edwards, Shaun Mannagh, Lawson Humphries and Connor O’Sullivan. All five players had a big impact in different ways during the Cats’ Elimination Final victory, proving that they are built for the big stage despite only being in their third season at the club.

‘What You Dream Of:’ Edwards Shines in September Debut Geelong’s young stars shone bright on the biggest stage, including Mitch Edwards who helped to turn the tide in the middle of the ground on Friday night

There was room for concern from Cats supporters after the opening 45 minutes of the game and for most teams, there certainly might have been a sense of panic after Carlton got the early jump.

Playing at the MCG in front of nearly 97,000 patrons, Edwards said it was a dream come true to pull on the blue and white Hoops on the biggest stage.

But for Geelong, as is always the case, there was a sense of calmness and composure amongst the playing group, knowing that there was certainly plenty of time to turn the game around.

“I remember when the national anthem went off and I looked around and I thought, this is what you dream of as a kid.

One pivotal change came around stoppages, with the Cats trailing the clearance battle by more than 10 for large parts of the opening half, before coming back to finish with only five less clearances than Carlton. In his first AFL Final, Mitch Edwards played a starring role as he finished with 12 disposals, 27 hit-outs and six clearances, having his fair share of big moments against a far more experienced opponent.

“It was amazing,” Edwards told Cats Media.

“It was pretty surreal, then I could have run through a brick wall after that. “It was pretty good, I loved it.” It has been a remarkable first season at the elite level for Edwards, who is continuing to get better as the year rolls on and taking every challenge in his stride. There was one moment in particular on Friday night that epitomised what September is all about, as Edwards charged back with the flight and with no regard for his own safety, having a significant impact in a big contest and showing that he is built for Finals.

His performance was a big part of Geelong’s win on Friday night, with the Cats’ mix of youth and experience shining through to help them progress to a Semi Final against Fremantle. Geelong trailed by 21 points early in the second term and were struggling to make inroads on the scoreboard, before flipping momentum and kicking 13 of the last 19 goals in the contest. Edwards said it was more subtle fixes at half time that led to the rapid turnaround, guiding Geelong to a big victory over the Blues. “A little bit, I guess we just weren’t playing to our strengths enough,” Edwards said. “Scotty said to us that if we get the game on our terms, we are much better chance of winning. “We played into their hands a little bit early, but we adjusted well I thought.” SEPTEMBER 2026 | FIND GEELONG

VENOM NAME FOUR DEVELOPMENT PLAYERS AHEAD OF THE 2026/27 SEASON

The Geelong Venom are thrilled to announce four WNBL Development players ahead of the 2026/27 season, with Millie McCarthy, Aleks Connolly, Poppy Stevens and Jasmine King all joining the club under incoming head coach Cheryl Chambers. The group brings genuine NBL1 pedigree and, in three of four cases, a basketball story that runs the entire length of Geelong’s own pathway — from junior representative level, through Geelong United, and now into the WNBL system. Stevens and King have each come through Geelong United’s junior ranks to the NBL1, while Connolly has been a fixture of the club’s NBL1 rotation and was named 2026 Geelong United Big V VYC Women’s MVP. McCarthy is the exception on paper only — raised through the Perry Lakes Hawks system in Perth, she has taken on a bigger role at Waverley Falcons in 2026 and arrives with the composure of a player who has already performed on the big stage. “This group is exactly why we invest so heavily in our pathway,” said GM of Pathways Megan Moody.

“To see players come through Geelong United from junior level, right through NBL1 and now into the WNBL, is the clearest proof point we have that the system works. Three of these four are Geelong born and bred, and that’s not an accident — it’s the result of years of work at grassroots level, and it’s exactly the kind of story we want to keep telling.” McCarthy’s season has been defined by a bigger role and bigger moments — 6.6 points and 3.5 assists a game for Waverley Falcons, punctuated by a 17-point, 8-assist outing against Sandringham and a composed 6-point, 7-assist, 3-rebound performance in the NBL1 National Finals. Connolly has been just as consistent for Geelong, highlighted by an 11-point, 6-rebound, 4-assist game against Ringwood and a 30-minute, 12-point showing against Frankston. Stevens and King represent the pathway at its purest. Stevens has progressed through every level of Geelong United’s junior system, including the U18 Vic Country pathway, to NBL1 and now WNBL, with a career-best 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three against Dandenong along the way — before heading to

college in the United States next year. King has spent three seasons with Geelong United’s NBL1 team and been a standout in the 2026 Big V VYC competition, averaging 12.5 points, 2.4 assists and 2.3 rebounds a game, and has now committed to Huntington University in Indiana. “Each of these four brings something different,” said Venom Head Coach Cheryl Chambers. “Millie’s composure running the point, Aleks’ consistency and competitiveness, Poppy’s shooting touch and Jasmine’s scoring instincts — they all give us something we can build with. Bringing them into our WNBL environment is about giving them the next step in their development and giving this program real depth for the years ahead.” The commitments are another bold step forward from the Venom as the club builds a roster — and a strong pathway — capable of competing for years to come. With Chambers at the helm and a core taking shape around genuine Geelong talent, there’s plenty for fans to be excited about heading into 2026/27. SEPTEMBER 2026 | FIND GEELONG

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jampacked with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer. The interactive play equipment includes a multicoloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net. The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong. The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars. The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing. On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel. There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork. The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

OLD GAOL A 19th century gaol which operated from 1853-1991 in the same conditions you see today.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners. Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions. Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria. It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls. The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.
