Geelong Column By City of Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj

The future of Greater Geelong is in great hands if our new Youth Council is anything to go by.

I was thrilled to listen as Greater Geelong Junior Mayor Ayush Singh presented the first Youth Council report for 2025 in our latest council meeting last month. Ayush spoke eloquently at the meeting about the 2025 Youth Council’s goals and the challenges young people face across Greater Geelong. The report outlined these challenges in its 2025 priority areas, including health and wellbeing for young people, cost of living relief, sustainability and safety and liveability in Greater Geelong. I can’t wait to see the Youth Council’s ideas and initiatives for addressing these challenges in the year ahead. In January, I had the privilege of working with this dedicated group of young people during a three- day mentoring session. Not only was it inspiring to see their passion for our region, we also gained many valuable insights into issues affecting Greater Geelong’s youth and how we, as a Council, can help address these. And the Youth Council is not just an advisory group – their advocacy over the years has led to real outcomes that have made a positive impact in our community. Last year, together with the 2024 Youth Council, we opened the Nest Youth Hub. Located at 17 Gheringhap Street, Geelong, the Nest is a fun, welcoming, and inclusive space for young people aged 12-25 to hang out, enjoy meals, access programs and connect with support services. The 2024 Youth Council played a key role in the design of the hub, which wouldn’t have been possible without the advocacy of several previous youth councils. I congratulate the 2025 Youth Council on a comprehensive first report and I look forward to working with them to help make Geelong a safer, healthier and more inclusive place for everyone.

Should financial advisors be offering financial advice to young people?

•

Be delivered via digital tools, seminars, podcasts, or group sessions — making it more scalable and cost-effective.

The Role of Financial Planners: Collaborate, Not Compete Financial planners can work together and with industry partners to: 1.

2.

3.

FINANCIAL PLANNER By Warren Strybosch

The Issues: Wealth Creation and Protection •

I am going to be really controversial and state that we should not be offering financial advice to young people. Yep, you heard me right but keep reading because I think you will agree with me when you have finished reading this article. The Problem: Affordability and Limited Resources •

•

Many younger Australians can’t afford traditional financial advice, which is often tailored to higher-networth or pre-retirement clients. Let’s be real. Most young people do not want to pay for financial advice. The reason is in two parts: a) young people have access to information like never before, and b) they do not see the value of paying for the advice until they feel they have maxed out their capacity to learn or are in a secure financial position and want to make sure they are taking full advantage of what they have in place. Since the Royal Commission, the financial planning industry has lost more than half of its financial advisors – resources are limited. Even if young people were interested in seeking advice, there is unfortunately not enough qualified advisors to service the needs of everyone and with greater demand is increased pricing/costs. As with housing, young people would be pushed out of this market by those who could pay.

•

•

Whilst young people do not have as many needs as those facing retirement or who are already in retirement, young people still wish to be able to access a certain level of advice. In my time as financial advisor it has always impressed me when young people actually take the time to want to learn. They access all the information and then they seek advice from qualified professionals to bring together everything they have learned. Young people face complex decisions early in life: choosing super funds, managing HECS debt, entering the housing market, obtaining appropriate levels of personal insurance cover, and saving for long-term goals. Whilst these might seem straight forward decisions to make for some people, for the majority, it can be quite confusing. Seeking guidance from someone who is qualified is key. Without early guidance, poor financial habits can take root and delay wealth-building.

Start of the solution: Why General Advice Is a Stepping Stone While personal financial advice is heavily regulated and often expensive, general advice can: • •

Provide basic education on superannuation, budgeting, insurance, and investing. Help young people build financial literacy and confidence.

4. 5.

Create free or low-cost general advice platforms, funded by industry bodies or through employer partnerships. I have already mentioned this idea to a large industry fund. Offer educational content through podcasts, webinars, and social media — where younger Australians already are. Work with super funds, universities, and schools to deliver neutral, highquality financial literacy content. Develop hybrid models (AI + adviser) to reduce the cost of scaled, compliant advice. Advocate for regulatory changes that reduce red tape for delivering low-risk general advice.

Navigating Compliance General advice must be: • •

Clear that it does not consider personal circumstances. Focused on education and options, not specific product recommendations unless licensed appropriately.

By staying compliant and transparent, planners can build trust early, leading to future relationships as these young clients grow wealthier. Long-Term Benefits • • •

Early financial empowerment leads to better retirement outcomes. Builds a pipeline of future clients. Reinforces the profession’s role as an ethical, community-focused industry, not just a service for the wealthy.

The Solution: Education and Apps •

As an industry, given our limited resources, I believe our core business should be focused on pre-retirees and retirees but NOT at the neglect of our young people. We have a duty of care to help our young people, to guide them, but do it in a way that is going to be cost effective and meets them where they are at.

www.findgeelong.com.au

This means we need to create content and applications that are engaging and provoke the young person to take action. Whilst there might be different ways of doing this, we must take time to find solutions for our young people. For instance, in our business we are in the process of doing the following: •

•

•

Writing a financial planning book (general advice only) that will be downloadable for free. The book will contain financial planning topics like purchasing your first home, bad debt vs good debt, personal insurance, ways to invest, and so on. Providing a community where young people can become members to discuss the book and to provide a safe environment whereby, young people can ask questions and be provided with answers that are sound and relevant to their needs. Building an App that encourages young people to take action. We believe if we can give young people the tools then they will be keen to do the work to secure their own financial freedom.

Final Thoughts The future of financial advice isn’t just about managing wealth in retirement — it’s about providing a way for everyone to access financial advice and help them to improve their overall financial position in life. As financial planners we need to work together to reach younger Australians. This in turn will build a stronger, more financially resilient society, where everyone will benefit.

The Power of Ownership Why Your Results Are a Direct Reflection of Your Leadership

LEADERSHIP & CULTURE SPECIALIST By Sally Higoe

Ever feel like you’re doing all the right things… but still not getting the results you want? The team isn’t quite firing. The priorities aren’t sticking. The vision feels like it’s floating somewhere in the background while you manage whatever fire’s in front of you. Here’s the hard truth: Your results aren’t about your calendar, your people, or your external pressures.

They’re about how you lead. That doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means there’s always an opportunity to get sharper, more focused, and more aligned in how you show up. So Why Aren’t You Seeing the Results? Because most leaders are stuck in reaction mode. They’re moving fast, handling problems, being across everything… But they haven’t stopped to ask: • • •

Is this how I want to lead? Are my actions matching my intentions? Am I driving this outcome—or just responding to it?

The Moment Everything Shifts Ownership isn’t about blame—it’s about power. When a leader starts owning: Their energy Their language Their focus Their follow-through

Everything changes. You stop hoping things will “click.” You start making them click—on purpose. You see what’s working, what’s not, and instead of waiting for someone else to step up, you shift gears and lead it differently. What You Can Do Today Here’s one question to ask yourself at the end of this week:

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be in charge of your leadership— not outsourcing it to circumstance, pressure or other people. Because leadership isn’t what you say— it’s what your results reveal. What’s your biggest insight from this article? Send me an email and let me know —I’d love to hear how it lands.

“What result am I tolerating that I actually have the power to change?”

And if you’re ready to stop spinning and lead with more impact, let’s talk, book a chat here:

Once you answer that—your leadership steps into another level.

DEVELOPING THE RIGHT TEAM FOR SUCCESS BUSINESS COACH By Deb Fribbins

The skill sets required for the role Licences and qualifications where applicable Type of employment Part time / full time / casual. Short term long term Business standards and values

Where some staff have been laid off due to the downturn in business, this not only causes concern with the remaining staff about their security, but in many cases, no one has explained who is picking up the workload of those no longer employed. Your staff are not mind readers.

During the interview inform them of your requirements and intention for them and listen carefully to their answers to wellformed questions to determine the right fit.

Be very clear when making staff changes to talk to those remaining about ALL the changes that affect your business and the impacts on their role.

• • • • •

When we start a small business, we often employ people to help in the business without having a clear direction of who they want, or what they really need them to do. Sadly, we often ask friends or family members to help us get started who do not have the skills we need to really help. They do the tactical jobs that need to be completed, without a strategic path. Before hiring anyone know in your mind 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

What tasks do they need to do? What skillsets do they need to have? How many hours a day or week do you need them? Do they need a specific licence i.e., RSA/ forklift operator etc.? What do you need to provide them with for them to be able to complete the tasks assigned?

The key to finding the right staff to hire, are those who are skilled in the areas you either, are not good at, or do not like doing. This will free up your time to work ON your business to ensure continued growth. Use their expertise to complete the tasks needed without using up more of your time than necessary. When your business gets to the point of needing staff consider the 5 key elements above then address the issues in the advertisements or provide that information to the recruitment company you use. The advertising for staff should be very clear in the Position Description, to include: • •

The personality fit you are looking for within the business The actual job function they will be required to do. ° Duties ° Responsibilities ° Outcomes

Inform them of: • The standards and values of your business to be upheld • The flexibility you are looking for • Physical abilities • Business structure • Opportunities for advancement When you are interviewing applicants, listen carefully to their answers. Sometimes those with carefully planned answers, are only looking for something for now, not a long-term solution Spending the time and effort to train staff who have no intention of staying is counterproductive. There are many, who do not interview well, but with a little support and compassion will be very loyal to you and your business. Spend time with these applicants, talk to them about their lives, their hobbies, their interests and their ambitions. Take the time to talk to them in the interview it may save time in the long term.

Keeping the remaining staff engaged is pivotal to your success in several ways. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Keeping the staff positive and engaged for the clients you still have. Inspiring staff to maintain standards and help train new staff. Engaging the staff to stay focused on the long-term and proactive to customer requests. Encourage loyalty to you, your business and your customers. Enabling you to strive for continual growth through innovation.

If you have really good staff members they may have friends that have the skill sets you need Ask them before advertising. That will achieve two goals 1. Demonstrate you trust your staff and 2. Save time and money in the long run.

Before you interview check them out online, Face Book, Instagram, Tic Toc, LinkedIn etc. If you have interviewed previously was there a candidate that was really good but you were not in apposition to appoint two new staff at the time. Your staff are you, in the eyes of your customers. Choose carefully, they can make or break your business. If you do not have the confidence to select the right staff, then use the skills of recruitment agencies. The fees you pay will be well be worth it, to achieve the goals you have set yourself. Over the last few months particularly, there has been a lot of confusion and miscommunication, this has been highlighted over and over again. You have a vision for your business. Many of us have had to “pivot” but have not passed on the clarity of the new goal posts to our staff.

Business Phone Systems customers. Today, we start with a key technology, a top tier phone system helps your business communicate with customers. VoIP

Microsoft Teams IT CONSULTANT By Justin Middleton

A good phone system can enable a business by meeting the evergrowing demands of its customers and employees. Since the pandemic in 2020, it has been increasingly clear that having a flexible workforce that can pick up and work from any location can be the difference between your business surviving and thriving. Over the coming months, I will write about components enabling your business flexibility and being able to meet and surpass your employees’ technology needs while delivering more to your

VoIP stands for Voice of Internet Protocol; in simple terms it means a phone system that uses an internet connection rather than a dedicated phone line. Most phone lines, especially if you have moved to the NBN, use VoIP technology. With VoIP it is easy to have a phone system with increased functionality over traditional business phone systems, while reducing costs and simplifying administrative overhead. What Features do a VoIP Business Phone System offer? Business Phone Systems have evolved beyond a menu function that connects to specific targets or takes messages. A good VoIP phone system, available anywhere there is internet connection, provides an extensive range of features: 1.

2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Schedule phone hours and multiple call-flow scenarios (business hours, after hours). Host online meetings and webinars. Message internally with colleagues or stakeholders. Share files, track tasks, and collaborate. Diversion of calls during long wait times. Calling multiple phone lines at once.

7.

Calendar integration to know when not to call employees. 8. Recognition of business hours to automatically divert calls, improving employee wellbeing. 9. Emailing voicemail messages. 10. Using computers, mobile phones, and physical handsets to handle calls. 11. Improve call quality with background noise suppression. 12. Using AI to take notes, key points, create tasks, next steps, and more. The list goes on for what a good business phone system can do to enable your business. Microsoft Teams There are many different VoIP business phone systems are out there, but one of the most popular, and for good reason, is Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is a product line that is built to augment the Microsoft Office suite, you’ll probably be familiar with mainstays like Word, Excel, and Outlook. Microsoft Teams is a top tier business phone system with close integration with the Microsoft ecosystem. Teams is a cost-effective way to enable your business, especially if you’re already using the Microsoft Office suite, with monthly operational costs generally being lower than traditional business phone systems.

From Noise to Momentum: The One Thing Most Not-for-Profits Overlook in Their Marketing

DIGITAL MEDIA By Ethan Strybosch

In the world of not-for-profit marketing, visibility is often treated as the ultimate goal. More views, more clicks, more traffic — all signs of progress, right? I used to believe that too. But after working closely with dozens of incredible organisations, I’ve come to a different conclusion: visibility without clarity is just noise. We’ve seen charities doing all the “right” things. Posting regularly. Running ads. Showing up on every platform. Yet despite their efforts, they weren’t seeing results. Their impact didn’t grow. Donations stayed flat. Engagement was minimal.

Why? Because they hadn’t nailed the one thing that truly makes marketing work: a clear message. Clarity is what turns a social post into a call to action. It’s what transforms a website visit into a donation. It’s the difference between being seen and being remembered. The questions every not-for-profit must answer are simple — but powerful: •

What do you want people to do?

•

Why should they care?

•

How does your mission align with the change they want to see in the world?

When we helped clients uncover and communicate this clearly, everything shifted.

Campaigns started converting. Donors leaned in. Volunteers showed up. The mission came to life in ways that felt tangible and exciting. This isn’t just theory. It’s the pattern we’ve seen again and again. So if your organisation’s marketing feels like it’s falling flat, don’t immediately assume you need more content or a bigger ad budget. Don’t just chase reach for the sake of reach. Instead, pause. Get clear on your message first. Because clarity is what transforms noise into momentum. And in the not-for-profit world, momentum is what drives real, lasting impact.

Coping with the skyrocketing cost of living

Cut back where you can

ACCOUNTANT

-

By Anjana Jogi

Whether it’s refilling your petrol tank or paying at the supermarket checkout, the higher cost of living is hitting every household hard. Across the world, everyday essentials have surged in price across the OECD. What can you do to try to keep up with the increasing cost of living? Here are our 12 top tips:

-

Prepare more meals at home and spend less at cafés and restaurants. Create a budget and keep your spending under control. Reduce the amount of meat you buy. Find ways to use your car less. Cancel your credit cards and your buy now pay later accounts. Review all your ongoing expenses like utilities, insurance and subscriptions – cancel, switch providers or get better deals.

Look for ways to earn more

Invest in your future

-

-

-

Grow your business’s profitability (talk to us about improving your profits) or ask for a pay rise. Take in a boarder or flatmate. Sell your unwanted items online.

Think about investing in ways that are likely to outperform inflation – both shares and the property market have historically provided returns higher than inflation.

-

Start a new business, launch a new product or service, or try a side hustle. Teach yourself about money and finances using free tools online and books from the library. Better money management helps you make the most of what you’ve got.

While inflation has slowed, it is still estimated to be in the 2 - 3% range this year on top of the recent increases. By increasing your income by 4%, and making up additional through savings, while also investing for the future, you can come out on top of inflation. Worried about money? Talk to us. We have years of experience through many economic cycles, including previous periods of high inflation – and we’re always here to help.

Chart of Accounts:

Where Bookkeeping Begins BOOKKEEPING By Jodie Moore

The Chart of Accounts is the foundation of your bookkeeping system. When starting a business, one of your first tasks should be setting this up. It is a structured list of all the accounts used to categorise your financial transactions for entry into the general ledger. Think of it as a financial map, organising transactions into five main categories: assets, liabilities, equity, income, and expenses. Each category is further divided into specific accounts. For example: •

Assets might include Cash at Bank, Accounts Receivable (Debtors), and Inventory.

•

Income could include Sales, Service Fees, and Interest Received.

•

Liabilities might feature Mortgage, Accounts Payable (Creditors), and GST Collected.

•

Expenses may include Wages, Marketing, Electricity, and Rent.

How to Paint metal surfaces

Apply the primer immediately after the previous surface preparation. This will help prevent flash rusting or dust accumulating. If what you are painting is outdoors (for example, roofs, furniture or sheds), a second coat of primer will add an extra layer of protection against oxidisation. 5.

Paint the surface

Metal paints come in oil-based and water-based brush-on or spray-can versions. Oil-based paint is trickier to work with but the results are last longer. Waterbased acrylic paints can be easier to apply but may be difficult to find in spray form for exterior use.

PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof

If you have metal garden furniture, aluminium window and door frames or an outdoor shed, cooler temperatures are a good time to paint them. Like all painting, preparation is the key to success. Here are a few handy tips for getting the best appearance and protection for the metal surfaces around the home or office. 1.

Clean the metal surface

Using sandpaper or another gentle scraping tool, remove all dust, dirt, debris and grease. A mild detergent should be sufficient but for more persistent deposits, mineral spirits will do the trick. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and leave to dry thoroughly. Don’t use water as it doesn’t clean metal effectively. 2.

Get rid of peeling or loose paint

This applies to preparing all surfaces for painting – get rid of old paint that is loose or peeling. Otherwise, the new paint won’t stick. Use a hand wire brush, a scraper or sandpaper and gently sand back. Too much pressure and the metal surface may be gouged, leading to an uneven finish.

Some people like to use power tools for this part of the cleaning process but beware – this method may end up polishing the metal surface, leaving nothing for the new paint to adhere to. You will need to rub a scuffing pad along the metal surface; the pads will lightly scratch the surface, allowing the primer to stick. 3.

Remove the rust

Rust is a sign that the metal is not totally sound. You may need to replace the roof or frames if there is structural damage. If there is rust in just a few places, apply a high-quality primer with rust-inhibiting properties by brushing or sanding. Painting over rust will damage the metal paint by causing it to rust as well. 4.

The easiest way to paint metal surfaces is with spray paint. (However, though it’s faster and easier, it doesn’t create as firm a finish.) If you decide to spray paint, hold the can 15 to 30 centimetres away from the metal surface – this prevents the paint from pooling. Using a long sweeping motion, spray whatever it is you want to paint. (Don’t be tempted to hold the can in one place.) If you notice excessive dripping, wipe everything clean and 6.

Work safely

Whenever you are painting metal surfaces, make sure you protect yourself. Wear a dust mask or respirator, protective goggles and gloves. Work in a well ventilated area – outdoors if possible. If you use power tools (for instance, when getting rid of rust), insert quality ear plugs to protect your hearing.

For more painting advice on painting in winter, contact Dahllof Painting Services at sjd67@bigpond.net.au. We will be happy to answer all your inquiries.

Use the appropriate primer

Check that the primer you choose is compatible with the paint you’ve selected. Follow the instructions on the label as different primers have differing drying times. Water-based primers are not appropriate for metal surfaces but there are many other options. Rust-inhibiter primers, iron oxide primers and galvanised primers are more suitable, depending on what you are painting.

If you had

A DAY TO

yourself, would you

spend it

in bed? NATUROPATHY By Kathryn Messenger

If you had a day to yourself, would you spend it in bed? People often come into my clinic for fatigue, and this is one of the questions I ask, as it tells me some important information. Fatigue can be present in so many different ways, and understanding the nature of it, is the start of understanding exactly what is going on in your body. Some people start their day with fatigue, and it improves as the day goes on, others start fine, but can hardly stay awake after lunch, and others get progressively more exhausted as the day goes on. For these people, when It’s bad enough, their ideal day is a day in bed, as they are just too tired to enjoy other activities. Adrenal fatigue If you’re sleeping through the night and getting enough sleep, this is likely to be adrenal fatigue: when you have been stressed or anxious for a long time, and your body has put the breaks on, trying to get you the rest that you need. Often at

or even before this point, people turn to caffeine, the easy fix for the fatigue. This may work for a while, then one of two things can happen, either the caffeine stops being effective, or it keeps you awake at night. In both circumstances, you wind up being tired again.

slump. If you feel like you need the boost, add protein and fats to keep your energy constant. For example, dried fruit on its own will give you a low afterwards, but if you combine it with nuts and seeds, the fats and protein will keep the energy going steadily for longer.

Calm the nervous system

Further help

The first thing to do, is to calm the nervous system. If your body has been pushed for a long time, it’s time to slow down and have some rest. Spending time with friends, creative activities, and exercise can all be really helpful here.

If you are absolutely exhausted and your ideal day would be in bed, herbal or nutritional supplements, can make an amazing difference to help you get your energy back, whilst you work on calming your nervous system.

Calming breathing exercises Breathing exercises can also be really helpful, and if you learn how to do them, they can be really effective in a moment of stress or anxiety. There are a lot of different techniques for calming breathing, choose one where your exhale is longer than your inhale. Diet So, now that we’ve addressed the nervous system, it’s time to look at your diet. Sugar and refined carbohydrates will give you a sudden energy boost, followed by a

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM: “In addition to being a safety hazard, this major pothole is also a terrible first impression for people arriving in Geelong from the nearby Spirit of Tasmania.

Update on the pothole at Seabeach Parade and St Georges Road Mayor Kontelj inspects the pothole at the intersection of Seabeach Parade and St Georges Road

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM inspected a major pothole at the intersection of Seabeach Parade and St Georges Road today. While Council tends to be responsible for local roads, the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) are responsible for more significant roads such as highways and freeways. When reporting any road concerns, it’s important to use the map of DTP managed roads on their website to check who is the responsible authority, as Council can only fix potholes on roads under our authority. The intersection of Seabeach Parade and St Georges Road is a DTP responsibility.

This intersection is the responsibility of the DTP, so I have written to them and to the local member Ella George MP to request urgent action. It’s clear from the size and scale of this pothole that a significant fix, rather than a simple patch job, is needed. I hope this significant fix happens as soon as possible to ensure our roads are at the standard that we expect and deserve.”

You can report a concern with a City of Greater Geelong road on our website.

Temporary playground closures for regular maintenance Deputy Mayor Ron Nelson

“The City manages and maintains 300+ public playgrounds and over 60 supervised early childhood centrebased play spaces. We understand the importance of providing play spaces that are safe and easily accessible the community. While the brief closure of the playgrounds will be inconvenient in the short term, the works will ensure that they are free from defects and continue to meet current Australian Standards.” Councillor Trent Sullivan

“The works are part of a monitored playground renewal schedule that is reassessed annually. One of our most loved free children’s attractions is set to receive a refresh to ensure the play equipment is well maintained and accessible for families visiting the Waterfront. We’re temporarily closing Eastern Beach Playground between Monday 5 May to Friday 9 May for maintenance. Works will include topping up the soft fall mulch, cleaning and rustproofing equipment and repainting all high-use areas.

While the playground will be fenced off, the surrounding open space area and picnic tables will continue to be available. The nearby Geelong Play Space on Eastern Park Circuit will also briefly close between Monday 12 May to Wednesday 21 May to allow for an upgrade to the perimeter fence. This award-winning inclusive playground caters for children of all ages and abilities and includes a Liberty Swing for those in wheelchairs.

Eastern Beach Playground and the Geelong Play Space are immensely popular, being just a stone’s throw away from the beach, Geelong Botanic Gardens, The Carousel and Waterfront cafes We apologise for the inconvenience these temporary closures may cause and recommend families visit the nearby Poppy Kettle Playground at Cunningham Pier and Pevensey Park Playground instead.” MAY 2025 | FIND GEELONG

Empowering a greener future through nearly $50k in grants Two innovative projects that aim to reduce energy consumption are set to become a reality after receiving 2024-25 Clean Economy Grants from the City. This grant stream supports businesses to develop a clean technology or circular economy solution that benefits the community and paves the way for a more sustainable Geelong region.

total energy consumption, this prototype aims to reduce usage during peak demand hours, while maximising the use of solar generation. Operating times and temperature of the appliances will be optimised beforehand based on weather forecasts, leading to overall cost savings and a comfortably pre-heated/cooled house. This approach offers a 100 per cent return on investment within the first two years. The City has previously supported innovative businesses such as FormFlow, Sequence Digital, Fulton Hogan and BOOM Power to launch new products and services through Clean Economy Grants.

Located in Lara, Boomaroo Nurseries & Wholesale Supplies will use its $25,000 grant towards its ‘EcoSmart Boiler Optimisation’ project to revolutionise the way its boiler operations are managed. By implementing an Artificial Intelligencedriven system based on real-time data and environmental conditions, the boilers will only operate when necessary. This will allow for the ideal temperature for plant growth to be maintained while minimising energy consumption by up to 30 per cent, and reducing fuel costs and emissions. Deakin University will put its $23,400 funding towards developing a prototype to trial in 20 Geelong houses. With heating and cooling appliances making up around 40 per cent of a household’s

Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj “There had been eight applications to the 2024-25 Clean Economy Grants round, requesting more than $198,000 in funding support. I applaud Boomaroo Nurseries & Wholesale Supplies and Deakin University for their clever and creative proposals to reduce running costs and emissions. It’s fantastic to see a thriving local industry that provides job opportunities right here in Geelong, without community members needing to leave the region for career advancement.” Councillor Emma Sinclair “The two projects will deploy smart technology to support better outcomes for our environment and community. We’re proud to back these local ambassadors for clean technology and build capability in our region, as we strengthen our region’s reputation as an advanced manufacturing leader and City of Design. Council looks forward to seeing the end results of the projects and how they contribute to making Greater Geelong an even better place to live.”

Positive Ageing Grants now open The City is excited to announce the Positive Ageing Grants are open. There is a total of $24,000 in the grant pool with grants of up to $1,000 available to support community-hosted activities and experiences that promote and support healthy ageing for people aged 55+ in the City of Greater Geelong. Eligible activities for funding should focus on: • • • • • •

encouraging physical activity promoting mental health and wellbeing strengthening social connection recognising and celebrating achievements supporting positive ageing providing opportunities for intergenerational engagement.

Previous grant recipients have hosted events including dances, workshops, sporting activities and cultural experiences. The Positive Ageing grants align with the City’s Positive Ageing Strategy 2021–2047, which aims to support healthy ageing for individuals aged 55+ in Greater Geelong. Grant applications are open now and close on Monday 26 May at 5 pm. You can apply by going to the Positive Ageing Grants page on the Geelong Australia website. To discuss your project or ask for help with the application process, please contact our Grants Team at communitygrants@geelongcity.vic.gov.au, or call 5272 5560. For further details on eligibility and the application process, please visit the Community Grants webpage.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM “The Positive Ageing grants are designed to help seniors explore new interests, build meaningful connections, and enhance their health and wellbeing. With approximately a third of the Greater Geelong population being over people aged 55 and over, it’s important that we promote positive ageing for this growing demographic.”

Chair of the Ageing-Well Advisory Committee, Councillor Rowan Story AM, RFD “It’s been fantastic to see the variety of activities past grant recipients have created. We encourage local organisations and community groups to apply for these grants and help us build a more age-friendly and supportive community.”

New modular community hub on the way for Armstrong Creek

Councillor Andrew Katos “The community hub will be the first modular constructed building to be delivered by the Victorian School Building Authority on City-owned land. We’re proud to collaborate with the Victorian Government and co-contribute funding towards a conveniently located community hub that will improve accessibility for a rapidly growing community. Children from Armstrong Creek will get access to a high-quality learning environment more quickly and families will have a ‘single drop off’ point for kinder and school.”

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney MP Armstrong Creek is growing quickly – and families there deserve the infrastructure to grow with it. This new hub will bring kindergarten, health services and a welcoming space for the community all under one roof – three years earlier than expected. It’s all about making sure our vibrant local families get the very best start in life, close to home.

Modular Kindergarten - Indicative three room floor plan (Source: Victorian School Building Authority)

The delivery of a new community hub and kindergarten in Armstrong Creek will be fast tracked by three years. The City has secured a grant from the Victorian Government for a three-room modular construction kindergarten for 99 children on Warralily Boulevard, forming part of the Bloinks Community Hub (interim name), from the $283 million provided in the 2019–20 State Budget for Three-Year-Old Kindergarten capital funding. Council resolved last night to co-contribute up to $3.5 million to deliver a multipurpose community room and allied health suites in addition to the kinder. The Victorian School Building Authority’s (VSBA) Building Blocks Capacity – Modular Grant and Council funding will enable the kinder and community hub to open next year, ahead of the original 2029 delivery date. The facility will service the area’s growing population, where 10.6 per cent of residents in Armstrong Creek and Mount Duneed are babies and preschoolers – nearly two times higher than the region’s average. Another 410 children under four years old are estimated to call the area home by 2026.

Located adjacent to the future Warralily Park Primary School (interim name) and Coastside Drive Reserve, the Bloinks Community Hub (interim name) is anticipated to include: • three kinder rooms, each with allocated outdoor play space and associated staff areas. • one multipurpose community room for activities such as playgroup and family support programs. • allied health suites. • landscaping and carparking. Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM “We are thrilled to receive this grant from the Victorian School Building Authority as it means Warralily residents will have a kindergarten and community hub three years sooner than planned. Council’s co-contribution will fund additional items, including a multipurpose community room, more consulting spaces, larger kinder outdoor play areas and 17 extra carparks. We can’t wait to see the modular Bloinks Community Hub (interim name) up and running in 2026 next to Warralily Park Primary School.”

This is such a great win for Armstrong Creek. With so many young families in the area, the new kinder and community hub will make a real difference – helping parents juggle daily life with a single drop-off point, and giving local kids access to modern, high-quality learning spaces right from the get-go. I’m proud the Victorian Government is backing this exciting project – because we know how important it is to invest in growing communities. By fast-tracking this hub, we’re creating a place where families can connect, learn, and access the support they need, all in the heart of Armstrong Creek.

New kindergarten facilities are required across the state to ensure the Victorian Government can deliver on its ‘Best Start, Best Life’ reforms, which have introduced free kinder and additional hours at kinder for every child. Modular kindergartens are constructed in a factory in sections called ‘modules’. The modules are then assembled onsite and connected to utilities, before outdoor areas and other works are completed. Parents can express their interest in a kinder place at this centre for 2026. The City will soon release an Expression of Interest inviting proposals from service operators to lease the site and deliver kindergarten and community spaces. Hit ‘Follow’ to be informed once the opportunity is open.

Council releases proposed 2025-26 Budget for community feedback The City of Greater Geelong has released its proposed 2025-26 to 2028-29 Budget for community feedback. The proposed budget aims to ensure the City’s long-term financial sustainability in a challenging economic environment. It includes strategic investments in maintaining and renewing essential infrastructure, while keeping rate increases below the cap mandated by the Victorian Government.

Investing in existing assets The 2025-26 budget focusses on repairing and renewing the City’s existing infrastructure rather than taking on new debt. The proposed budget increases asset renewal spending from $234 million in the previous budget to $315 million. This is vital to ensure City-owned infrastructure remains resilient and well-maintained.

This budget represents an important first step toward the City of Greater Geelong’s long-term goal of reducing debt and borrowing, and producing consistent cash surpluses.

Our capital works program remains a key priority, with a forecasted investment of $764 million over the four-year period. This is also an increase on the 2024-25 budget’s four-year forecast.

The proposed 2025-26 budget demonstrates Council’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that Greater Geelong remains a liveable, sustainable and vibrant region for current residents and future generations.

The proposed capital works investment for 2025-26 is $210.9 million, divided into the following categories:

Key Highlights

•

Debt reduction and sale of non-core assets The proposed 2025-26 budget aims to reduce our projected four-year debt from $204.7 million, as forecast in the 2024-25 budget, to $142.2 million, by 30 June 2029. To achieve this, the budget incorporates the sale of several non-core assets in 2025-26, which will generate close to $15 million in proceeds. These funds will help the City pay down its existing debt. The budget also proposes no new borrowing over the next four years. This freeze on borrowing has required Council to make difficult decisions and exercise great restraint. This demands prudent judgement, as the City acutely feels the impacts of inflation, interest rates and substantially higher construction costs.

• •

Buildings – $68.8 million. Roads, paths, kerb and channel and drains – $42.3 million. Land acquisitions – $23.5 million.

Parks, open space and leisure – $31.7 million. Plant and equipment – $8.7 million. Waste management – $18.7 million Other – $17.2 million.

These works will be delivered via a combination of direct Council funding, state and federal government grants, and developer contributions. Free 2P parking To provide relief for local residents and businesses, the budget introduces free two-hour parking in central Geelong and across the region. This was a key initiative highlighted in our recent in Central Geelong Revitalisation Forum, to make it easier for locals and visitors to support CBD businesses. 2.5% rate increase The budget sets rates increase at 2.5 per cent, which is half a per cent lower than the Victorian Government’s 3 per cent rate cap. This increase ensures that essential services and infrastructure continue to be funded while keeping costs manageable for ratepayers. Setting rate increases at 2.5 per cent instead of 3 per cent will save ratepayers an estimated $1.1 million in total. The 2.5 percent increase is lower than the City of Greater Geelong’s previous rate increase of 2.75 per cent in 2024-25.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM In tough economic times, Council’s main priority is to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of our region, and this budget takes significant steps toward achieving that goal. We are committed to delivering essential services and renewing infrastructure without burdening our community with excessive debt. This budget, our first as a Council, will ensure we can continue to deliver muchneeded services and infrastructure for our community while prioritising longterm fiscal responsibility. This will create capacity to adapt to future economic challenges and opportunities, with the decisions we make now set to shape our region’s finances over the next decade and beyond. Now, we want to hear from you. I encourage everyone to get involved in the budget process by providing your feedback and helping to shape the future of our city. The proposed budget is open for community feedback via the Council website at geelong.link/Budget2025-26 until 5pm on Wednesday 21 May. MAY 2025 | FIND GEELONG

YOUR LOCAL BIKE SHOP WITH A DIFFERENCE Did you know Good Cycles is more than just a bike shop? At Good Cycles, we create good jobs for young people. Right now, young people are up against a bunch of barriers when it comes to landing a job. Barriers that have kept them from finding their feet at work and in the world. At Good Cycles, we’re in the business of knocking down those barriers. We believe that every young person deserves a chance to thrive in a job they’re pumped about, no matter their background, their struggles or what’s in (or not in) their CV. Our mission? To keep knocking down those barriers, and swing open doors for young people, one job at a time. Because here’s what we know: when we create good workplaces for people who’ve experienced barriers to employment, we’re creating good communities for everyone. As a job-focused social enterprise, we deliver social and environmental innovation through four commercial divisions, including our Good Bikes retail stores (you’ll find us in Geelong on Little Malop Street!)

NOT-FOR-PROFIT At Good Cycles, we know that real jobs and real experience make all the difference. That’s why our Youth Employment Program (YEP) takes a hands-on, work-first approach, helping Young People build skills and confidence while earning an adult wage. In 2024, we had 49 staff participating in YEP, providing 34,578 hours of work. Of our YEP participants, 82% had 2 or more barriers to employment while 65% had 3 or more barriers to employment. Each barrier multiplies the effect of disadvantage on young people. Getting and keeping a job changes everything. When young people stay employed for 6 months, especially when facing challenges, it’s a huge win. It builds confidence, creates stability, and helps connect with others, setting them up to tackle future obstacles and reach their full potential for steady, long term employment. In 2024, 88% of YEP participants maintained employment with Good Cycles for more than six months. Since 2013, Good Cycles has provided over 780 young people with employment and training pathways.

Good Cycles Geelong Good Cycles is located in Little Malop Street, Geelong, with a full service workshop, new bikes, and carry a range of cycling parts & accessories. Our Geelong team is super passionate about cycling at all levels, whether you are a seasoned bikepacker like our store manager John-Paul, curious about e-bikes (and perhaps swapping your car for one!) or even just starting out. Our staff are here to help! We also offer workplace servicing to better support employees riding to work and support the vibrant cycling community of Geelong through events like Ride2Work Day. On Fridays we offer bike maintenance classes, to help learn the key elements of bicycle maintenance. In these 45 min classes you can learn how to understand your bike better, keep it in top condition and deal with basic issues you might face on the road. We cover:

Our Impact Young people are more than twice as likely as older people to experience unemployment with a range of barriers to entering the labour market, such as lack of work experience, long-term unemployment, insecure housing, early school leaving/low literacy; or lived experience of mental health challenges, disability or serious health issues, family violence or justice system experience.

HEADING NORTH FOR THE WINTER? HAVE YOU COMPLETED AN ABSENCE FROM RESIDENCE FORM? As the weather cools here, many residents are planning their annual trips north to seek warmer climates for the winter. One important aspect of your planning should be to complete a Victoria Police Absence from Residence form. Perhaps you are heading overseas, or in hospital for a prolonged period. You can be away from your home for many reasons.

• Make it seem like you’re at home Get timer switches for your lights and radio or television, if you don’t have smart home technology. Letting police know is a proactive way you can help keep your home and community safe.

There is usually a truckload of things you need to do and get ready before you go away. So, trying to remember all the simple things you can do to keep your home secure, can be tough.

This is even more important if you’ll be away a long time. When you register with police, you provide: • Your contact information. • Times and dates you’ll be away. • Who to contact while you’re away.

We’ve taken the hassle out of that by preparing a free home security holiday checklist. Download it and fill it out as part of your trip preparations. https://nhw.com.au/wp-content/ uploads/Home-security-holidaychecklist-Update-2022_Int.pdf

COMEDY

Ross Noble is returning to Geelong in 2025! Roll up, roll up! Or use a more conventional form of transport to get to the show. It’s entirely your choice. Unless you accidentally become trapped in a barrel*. Should that happen, then just find an incline and start rolling to see the one and only Ross Noble. He’s the Wizard of Waffle, The Rambler Royale, The Noodlers’ Noodler, & he’s back live on stage to tour a tornado of tangents. What the show’s about is anybody’s guess, but that’s all part of the fun when you look inside his Cranium of Curiosities. *We strongly advise trying not to get trapped in a barrel before or during the performance. Fanning Dempsey National Park announce the Deluge 2025 Regional Tour! Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey are two of the most revered and successful Australian artists of the last 30 years. The esteemed pair launched new project Fanning Dempsey National Park releasing their highly acclaimed debut album ‘The Deluge’. They’ve crafted a bold sound, exemplified by lead single ‘Disconnect’ combining ethereal synths, robotic pulses, thwacking drums, and stabbing sax. Second single and title track ‘The Deluge’ emerged from Fanning’s experiment with monochromatic rhythm and vocal melody, coloured by Dempsey’s wild spasms of treated guitar and synth.

AFL Match Report | Cats Prevail in Heart-Stopper at the MCG Geelong have held on to secure a famous win at the MCG, defeating Collingwood by three points on Saturday night Sam De Koning and Mark O’Connor were immense under pressure in the third term, picking off numerous intercept possessions to help thwart a number of Collingwood attacks early. The final quarter was an absolute heartstopper, as both sides has chances to seal the deal in a dramatic finish to an epic contest. Geelong kicked four unanswered goals to start the last term, kicking away to a 17-point lead as time continued to tick down but it was never going to be that simple. Collingwood mounted one final charge to pull back within a kick late, setting up an opportunity for Jack Crisp to be the hero after the final siren. Geelong has prevailed in one of the most dramatic finishes to a match in recent history, defeating Collingwood by three points in front of 82,514 at the MCG on Saturday night. The Cats stormed to a commanding lead with four unanswered goals to start the final quarter, before the Magpies pegged back the deficit late to set up a grandstand finish. With time ticking down, Jack Crisp had an opportunity to win the game after the final siren but he dragged his kick wide, Geelong hanging on the record a famous victory. Patrick Dangerfield dominated throughout the night finishing with 29 disposals, 17 contested possessions and eight score involvements, having a telling hand in numerous scoring opportunities in the final quarter. Bailey Smith (34 disposals, five clearances) continued his strong run of form with another terrific display, along with Shaun Mannagh (18 disposals, eight clearances, two goals) and Sam De Koning (10 intercept possessions).

Geelong started strongly in the opening term, booting four of the first five goals to skip out to an early lead before Collingwood came charging back, leaving the Cats trailing by three points at the first break.

With the game on his boot, Crisp dragged his set-shot wide and the Cats held on to claim an iconic three point victory.

Bailey Smith made his presence felt early collecting nine disposals in the opening stanza, while Ollie Dempsey soared high into the night sky to pull down another mark of the year contender.

SCOTT CREDITS DANGERFIELD for epic performance against Collingwood

Chris Scott praised the performance of Geelong’s captain on Saturday night, helping to steer the Cats to a brilliant victory Patrick Dangerfield put the superhero cape on against the Pies, with the Geelong skipper reminding his coach of a legendary rugby player with his attack on the footy. Dangerfield played as a near-permanent forward, recording 29 disposals for the match – 13 coming in the last quarter alone – as well as 17 contested possessions and a crucial final-term goal. “Not just his last quarter – he just looked like (New Zealand rugby union international) Jonah Lomu there at one stage, like he’s just really enjoying that part of the game,” Chris Scott said. “I mean, he always has, and we know that’s he’s a threat – he’s always been a threat forward – and he can attack the ball in the air, but the ground level stuff. “I’m a bit biased, I like those players, the [Jordan] De Goey type players, that powerful, bull at a gate ones. It’s good fun to watch them at the moment.”

Collingwood coach, Craig McRae joked “The one that was more frustrating was a pre-game incident may have spurred the mark in the goalsquare before that. on Dangerfield. I mean, we were fortunate, I think, to get away with the win in the end, the way the “I stole his park before the game, and he last two or three minutes played out. wasn’t that happy. I blame myself,” McRae said. “Not fortunate before that, to get ourselves “He’s a bloody good player, isn’t he? He’s in that position, after being outplayed for a battering ram. We had 20 broken tackles, a big part of the middle of the game, or 15, and he was the most of them. He just and the ability to hang in there and beelines you and runs through you.” give ourselves a chance, that that was admirable. But, yeah, certainly not sort of Scott said he couldn’t repeat what was on his mind when Crisp had his shot after the sitting here thinking that the execution for the last three minutes was the reason we siren to win the game. won the game.” “It was a game where you kind of expected something like that to happen. Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer. The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net. The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong. The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars. The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

The changing landscape of Retirement Incomes

RETIREMENT By Warren Strybosch

With the rise of more people retiring than ever before, the government was concerned about retirees underspending in retirement and balancing this with the fear retirees had of running out of money. Whilst the superannuation system had been very effective at accumulating retirement savings, it was not as effective at helping retirees manage and use those savings once they retired. As such the Retirement Income Covenant (RIC) was established. The Retirement Income Covenant is an Australian law introduced on 1 July 2022 that requires superannuation trustees (i.e. super funds) to develop a clear strategy to help their members achieve better retirement outcomes. It’s not a rule directly applied to individuals, but it has significant implications for retirees, particularly in how super funds support retirement planning. What Is the Retirement Income Covenant? The Retirement Income Covenant (RIC) is part of the government’s broader push to ensure superannuation funds: 1. 2. 3.

Help members maximise their retirement income, including both super and Age Pension. Manage the risks of running out of money (longevity risk). Provide flexibility to meet unforeseen expenses or changing personal needs.

Funds must document and publish a retirement strategy, tailored to their member base, and continually improve their support systems for retirees. How Does It Impact Retirees? While the covenant doesn’t mandate individual action, it changes what retirees can expect from their super fund. Here’s how it affects you:

1. Better Retirement Tools and Guidance Super funds are now expected to: • Offer retirement income calculators or models. • Provide retirement projections and help with income planning. Offer more transparent comparisons between account-based pensions and other income options. This gives retirees more informed choices, reducing the chance of poor financial decisions. 2. Access to New Retirement Products Funds are encouraged to create and promote retirement income products that go beyond the basic account-based pension. This may include: • •

Annuities (guaranteed income for life or a fixed term). Hybrid products that combine lump sums, income streams, and reserve access.

These are designed to better balance income stability with access to savings, especially as retirees live longer. 3. More Individualised Advice or Information While the covenant doesn’t force funds to give personal financial advice, it does push them to improve: • •

Member segmentation (e.g. age, balance size, eligibility for the Age Pension). Tailored communication about retirement income and risks.

Some funds now provide personalised retirement dashboards or nudges as you approach retirement.

www.findgeelong.com.au

MAY 2025 | FIND GEELONG 73

4. Focus on Longevity and Risk Management The covenant encourages funds to help retirees manage risks like: • • •

Outliving their savings. Investment market volatility. Unexpected expenses (e.g. health care or aged care).

This may influence how funds structure drawdown recommendations or encourage diversified income streams. What the Covenant Doesn’t Do • • •

It does not force members to use certain retirement products. It does not guarantee any minimum retirement income. It does not replace the need for personal financial advice.

Summary Aspect

Before Covenant

After Covenant

Limited tools or support

Stronger focus on retirement planning

Products

Mostly accountbased pensions

New income stream options (annuities, hybrids)

Risk Management

Left to individual

Funds must help with longevity and income risk

Personalisation

One-size-fits-all

More segmented strategies and tools

Guidance

The Retirement Income Covenant is a policy shift, aiming to make super funds more proactive in helping members transition into and navigate retirement. It empowers retirees with better support, tools, and potentially more secure income options. The Retirement Income Covenant is about to be reviewed, and industry funds are likely to be put on notice to demonstrate how they have been making active moves towards meeting these new requirements, especially around the introduction of new retirement income products. We have already started to see some industry funds partner with annuity providers with the aim to fulfill their obligations under the Retirement Income Covenant. What is of real interest to us is the recent 15% stake TAL acquired in Challenger: one of the leaders in the annuity space in Australia. Why this is of particular interest to us is that AustralianSuper had chosen TAL as the company of choice to build their inhouse annuity style product back in 2023. We are now wondering if the TAL will create a white label version of Challenger’s annuity products and offer these products via AustralianSuper’s investment platforms. If so, I would be 100% behind this move.

We believe the Retirement Income Covenant is a positive move for retirees and we look forward to seeing these mandated changes put in place in the near future. Warren Strybosch Award winning Financial Adviser and Accountant
