We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free.

We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month.

We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area.

To help support the paper, we invite local business owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses.

Behind the shopfronts, offices, studios and businesses across Geelong are people who have taken risks, faced challenges and continued to show up for their customers and communities.

This August, the Geelong Small Business Festival returns from 3–7 August 2026, bringing local businesses, professionals and entrepreneurs together to connect, learn and grow. Now in its 16th year, the festival is delivered by the City of Greater Geelong in partnership with the Geelong Chamber of Commerce.

As the festival celebrates local enterprise, three people offer different perspectives on the people and ideas shaping Geelong’s small-business future.

Olivia Thwaites

THE ENTREPRENEUR Turning a personal problem into a business idea.

Olivia Thwaites is the founder and CEO of Green Hip Workwear. A qualified horticulturalist, Olivia experienced firsthand the problems with workwear designed without women in mind. She created Green Hip to provide workwear designed specifically for women, and built the business around a clear idea: women should feel comfortable, safe and represented at work. Her story is one of resilience and determination, especially after facing rejection and being told there was no market for

women’s workwear. Olivia will also share her story as the keynote speaker at the festival’s 2026 launch event.

THE LOCAL VOICE Giving Geelong retailers a stronger collective voice.

Bec Lamont is a local business owner and the founder of the Geelong Retailers Association. After concerns about parking and wider challenges facing CBD traders sparked a strong community response, Bec helped create a collective voice for local retailers. Her story shows how one business owner’s concerns can grow into a broader conversation about the future of Geelong’s business community.

When it comes to managing your money, there is no shortage of information available. From social media influencers and online articles to friends, family and financial institutions, everyone seems to have an opinion on what you should do with your finances.

But not all financial guidance is the same.

Understanding the difference between financial information, general advice and personal financial advice can help you make more informed decisions and ensure you receive guidance that is appropriate for your circumstances.

Financial Information Financial information is educational in nature. It explains financial concepts, products or strategies without recommending that you take a particular course of action.

Examples include: • Articles explaining how superannuation works.

• Information about the tax treatment of investments.

• Educational resources about budgeting or managing debt.

• Online calculators that estimate retirement savings.

Financial information can help you improve your understanding of financial matters, but it does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or personal needs.

General Financial Advice General advice goes a step further by expressing an opinion or recommendation about a financial product or strategy.

However, it is not tailored to your personal circumstances.

For example, someone may suggest that investing in shares has historically produced strong long-term returns or that making additional contributions to superannuation may be beneficial. While these statements may be factually correct, they do not consider whether they are suitable for you.

Have you ever walked out of a meeting thinking, “That went really well,” only to discover a few days later that everyone walked away with a completely different understanding?

It happens more often than leaders realise.

The frustrating part is that most leaders genuinely believe they’ve communicated clearly. The problem usually isn’t what they said. It’s how their team heard it.

One of the biggest shifts I see in leadership isn’t learning to communicate more. It’s learning to communicate differently.

As workplaces become more diverse, every team brings together people with different personalities, experiences and ways of processing information.

Expecting everyone to interpret the same message in the same way is unrealistic. Great leaders recognise this and adjust accordingly.

One of the most valuable tools I’ve found for helping leaders do exactly that is the Extended DISC assessment.

Unlike many personality tools, Extended DISC looks beyond behaviour alone.

It helps explain the communication preferences people naturally bring into

the workplace, giving leaders a practical way to understand why some conversations flow effortlessly while others create confusion, frustration or conflict.

Rather than expecting your team to adapt to you, DISC helps you adapt to them.

At its simplest, communication styles generally fall into four broad approaches.

Some people naturally keep their thoughts to themselves and avoid difficult conversations.

Others are comfortable expressing opinions directly and confidently. Some communicate indirectly, often trying to avoid conflict even when something needs to be said. Others are clear, respectful and open, expressing their views while remaining genuinely interested in hearing someone else’s perspective.

When leaders understand how their people naturally process information, they build stronger relationships, reduce unnecessary misunderstandings and create teams that work together with greater trust and clarity.

Leadership isn’t about communicating more.

It’s about communicating in a way your team can actually hear.

Past research from The Alternative Board found the average entrepreneur spends 68.1% of their time working ‘in’ their business (tackling day-to-day tasks, putting out fires, etc.) and only 31.9% of the time working ‘on’ their business (e.g., long-term goals, strategic planning).

Revisiting and updating your business strategy is vital for a growing business – and that means making more time to focus on strategic thinking.

Test your financial scenarios, cashflow and budgeting: Stress-test your cashflow by creating worst-case scenarios and adjusting your operating budgets to reflect the current rising costs for raw materials or labour.

Look for any non-essential spending

and set clear targets for preserving your cash levels and working capital.

Revisit your customer value proposition Re-evaluate your customer value proposition (CVP) to confirm it still meets the changing needs of your market and target audience. This might mean simplifying your product offerings, adding a high-value service tier or putting money into deeper customer research and development.

Putting money into targeted up-skilling and training can improve your overall capabilities, while outsourcing to fill any critical gaps will help you capture new opportunities.

Pricing a product or service is one of the most critical decisions a business owner must make. Charge too much, and you risk scaring away potential customers.

Charge too little, and you might not cover your costs or earn the profit you need to sustain and grow your business.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand how to determine the right price for your product or service using smart pricing strategies.

2. Analyse the Market

Fixed Costs: These are costs that remain constant, regardless of how much you produce or sell. They include things like rent, utilities, software subscriptions, and salaried employees.

Variable Costs: These fluctuate depending on how much you produce or sell. Materials, hourly wages, packaging, and shipping costs all fall under this category.

Once you’ve calculated both fixed and variable costs, you can figure out your break-even point—the minimum number of sales you need to cover both types of costs. This is crucial, as it ensures that your pricing will at least allow you to avoid losses.

4. Consider Psychological Pricing Psychological pricing can have a powerful impact on your sales. For instance, pricing something at $99.99 instead of $100 can trigger a perception of a better deal, even though the difference is just one cent.

Best Tips for Cleaning Up After Painting PAINTING & DECORATING

How can I clean my paintbrushes?

After you’ve finished painting your home, the task isn’t over just because you’ve admired the beautifully done walls and ceilings. There’s a lot more to do before you can truly relax and enjoy your accomplishment with a glass of wine or beer.

It’s frustrating to pull out brushes, rollers, edgers, scrapers, and paint trays for a new project only to find that they weren’t cleaned after the last use. After painting, promptly clean all your tools to prevent the paint from setting permanently on them, and dry them well to avoid rust.

What should I do with cloths, sheets, and tape?

If you used latex paint, warm soapy water will suffice; for oil paint, you will need turpentine, mineral spirits, or paint thinner. Avoid soaking brushes in solvent or water, as this could damage the bristles. Instead, pour the soapy water or solvent into a container and dip the paintbrush into it. Work the solution through the bristles, dipping it up and down in the container multiple times.

Spin the brush in an area away from your work to remove excess water or thinner, then repeat the process using clean water or thinner in a separate container.

For rollers, take them apart and rinse them with warm water, then add detergent and work it into a lather to remove the paint.

Let them air dry while standing upright to avoid flattening the fibres. If you use solvent-based paint, pour solvent into the paint tray, rotate it through the roller, and allow it to soak for a few minutes.

Squeeze the excess solvent out of the roller and repeat the process with fresh solvent until it’s clean.

Even during the painting process, having a damp cloth nearby can make it easier and faster to clean up drips and spills right away. For oil-based paint, drips on dry, non-porous surfaces can be removed with mineral spirits or paint thinner. Waterbased paint is best cleaned with warm, soapy water while still wet.

Be sure to remove all masking tape before the paint dries, as this helps prevent the new paint from pulling off with the tape when removed. If the paint has dried, it’s fine; you can carefully score the edge with a sharp knife or razor blade before pulling it off. For painted glass surfaces, it’s best to wait until the paint has fully dried before using a knife or paint scraper.

When you take off the drop cloths or sheets, fold the corners into the centre.

This technique ensures that any spills or drips won’t splatter onto areas around you.

Oily rags can spontaneously ignite if they are piled up or stored in a closed space.

To prevent this risk, you should soak oily rags in an open container of water or allow them to dry thoroughly before washing.

A helpful suggestion is to designate one set of synthetic painting tools for oilbased products and another for waterbased products. This approach will make it easier to clean your brushes by not switching between the two types of paint bases.

To effectively clean a paintbrush, a paintbrush comb is one of the best tools.

It can clean the centre of the brush and remove any leftover residue near the ferrule’s edge. If paint residue remains, it hardens and can cause the bristles to lose their flexibility. Once cleaned, use the comb to reshape the bristles back to their original form before laying it flat to dry.

Pour unused paint from your tray back into the tin, provided it’s not contaminated by insects or dirt. Run water over your paint tray, use a scrubbing brush to remove the rest of the paint and dry the tray off with an old cloth. Discard tray liners when dry.

After using the appropriate cleaner on your hands, wash them with soap and water.

What Does the Research Say?

The Homeopathy Research Institute has compiled and summarised hundreds of published studies examining laboratory research, clinical trials and systematic reviews. This illustrates that whilst individualised treatment is best practice, some health conditions can often be treated with the same remedy.

Like many areas of healthcare, homeopathy research is complex.

As with all areas of medicine, research continues to evolve.

Whilst researchers have also published randomised controlled trials, observational studies and systematic reviews investigating homeopathic treatment across a range of conditions also exist. One challenge is that homeopathy is usually individualised. Two people with the same medical diagnosis may receive different homeopathic medicines because the prescription is based on the whole person rather than the diagnosis alone. This individualised and holistic approach does not align well with conventional research methods. Most clinical studies are designed to administer a single intervention to a large group of participants with the same health condition and then evaluate its effectiveness by analysing the proportion of individuals who experience improvement.

What Does This Mean for Patients?

Some homeopathic research shows little difference to placebo due to the lack of individualised treatment.

When individuals visit my clinic, they are usually looking for one thing: to feel better. Most have already seen their doctor and either have a diagnosis, or a functional disease, which is when all the testing comes back clear, but they are still unwell and need support.

Like anything, some people will notice an obvious improvement with homeopathy, and some will notice less. Whilst homeopathy is definitely a whole system of medicine on its own, I usually see better results when it’s combined with herbal medicine, nutrition, or lifestyle changes.

AI and older Australians: why seniors deserve a seat at the table

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future possibility. It is rapidly becoming part of everyday life. Recognising this, the Australian Government has recently announced a National AI Plan alongside broader proposals for national AI standards, a dedicated Office of AI and increased investment in AI safety and governance. The Government says its vision is to ensure that AI “serves Australians, not the other way around”, while supporting innovation, productivity and economic growth. It has also acknowledged that the benefits of AI should be shared broadly across the community and that diverse voices must be included in shaping Australia’s AI future.

While much of the public discussion focuses on economic growth, technological innovation and managing risk, another conversation deserves equal attention: ensuring older Australians have a meaningful role in shaping technologies that will increasingly influence their healthcare, aged care services, financial security and independence.

AI is rapidly transforming how we live, work, access healthcare, manage finances and connect with others. Yet as governments, technology companies and researchers race to shape Australia’s AI future, one important group is often missing from the conversation: older Australians.

This is particularly concerning given that Australians aged over 65 are one of the fastest-growing population groups and are among those most likely to be affected by AI-driven changes in healthcare, aged care, banking, government services and online safety.

Research increasingly suggests that older adults do not want AI designed for them. They want it designed with them.

Older Australians Are Not “Technologically Challenged” A common misconception is that older people struggle with technology and are therefore less interested in emerging innovations such as AI. However, research paints a very different picture. Many older adults are curious

about AI, motivated to learn and keen to understand how these technologies may affect their lives. The challenge is not a lack of interest. Rather, it is that older Australians are frequently excluded from design and consultation processes despite being major users of AI-driven services.

As Australia develops its National AI Plan, this presents an important opportunity.

If the Government genuinely intends for AI to serve all Australians, older people must be included in conversations about how AI is designed, governed and implemented.

The Risk of Designing AI Without Older Voices AI systems learn from data. If older people are underrepresented in the data used to train these systems, the technology may not recognise or respond appropriately to their needs.

Older adults are often underrepresented in AI training datasets and technology design. This can contribute to bias and may reduce the effectiveness of AI-powered healthcare tools and support services. When older people are not involved in design processes, developers risk creating solutions based on assumptions rather than lived experience.

This issue becomes increasingly important as governments and organisations explore using AI within healthcare, aged care and public services. Decisions made today may influence how older Australians access services for decades to come.

Older Australians Want Consultation, Not Just Protection Public discussions about AI often focus on protecting older people from scams, misinformation and digital exclusion.

While these concerns are important, they are only part of the story.

Research participants involved in AI consultation studies expressed a strong desire to help shape the future of AI. They wanted input into: • •

Participants also emphasised the importance of transparency and informed consent when AI is used in healthcare and aged care settings.

This aligns closely with Australia’s new National AI Plan, which recognises the importance of ensuring AI benefits all Australians and highlights the need to include communities that may otherwise be overlooked as technology evolves.

The Growing Threat of AI-Enabled Scams One area where older Australians are particularly affected is online fraud.

AI-generated phishing emails, voice cloning, fake news stories and deepfake videos are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Older Australians are often targeted because scammers perceive them as having accumulated savings and being more trusting of authority figures.

Rather than being viewed solely as victims, many older adults believe they should be involved in discussions about scam prevention and digital safety. Some experts suggest AI itself may become part of the solution by helping users identify fraudulent content before harm occurs. Their experience and insights are valuable and should not be overlooked.

Building AI Literacy Among Older Australians One encouraging finding from recent research is that older adults are eager to learn about AI when education is practical, accessible and delivered through trusted community settings.

Australia’s National AI Plan also includes measures aimed at strengthening digital and data skills across the community, recognising that participation in an AI-enabled future requires access to education and learning opportunities.

Several existing programs already help support digital confidence among older Australians: Be Connected A nationally funded Australian Government initiative providing free digital skills training and community learning opportunities.

Community Technology Classes Libraries, neighbourhood houses and community organisations offer local technology support and training.

Looking Ahead Australia is investing heavily in artificial intelligence and has now committed to a National AI Plan, AI safety initiatives, a future Office of AI and the development of national standards. Decisions made today will influence how Australians live, work and access services for decades to come.

This creates a rare opportunity to ensure that older Australians are not simply recipients of AI but contributors to its future.

Older Australians bring decades of lived experience, wisdom and practical insight. They understand what supports independence, dignity, safety and wellbeing because they live those realities every day.

The question is no longer whether older Australians can adapt to AI. The real question is whether policymakers, researchers and technology companies are willing to listen.

If Australia wants AI systems that are fair, inclusive and responsive to community needs, older Australians must be recognised not merely as users of technology, but as partners in its design.

Why Does Grandfathering Matter?

Australia’s aged care reforms introduced significant changes to how residents contribute towards the cost of residential aged care from 1 November 2025. While many people entering care after this date are subject to the new fee structure, others may qualify for valuable grandfathering provisions that preserve aspects of the previous rules.

Understanding whether a client is fully grandfathered, partially grandfathered, or not grandfathered at all can have a significant impact on their ongoing costs and long-term financial position. Information regarding residential aged care fees and means testing is available through the Australian Government’s Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, Services Australia, and My Aged Care.

What Does Grandfathering Mean?

The aged care reforms separate grandfathering into two distinct areas: • Accommodation payments • Ongoing care costs A client may qualify for protection under one or both of these categories.

Generally speaking: • Individuals who entered permanent residential aged care before 1 November 2025 will continue under the previous arrangements for both accommodation payments and ongoing care fees.

• Clients who were approved for a Home Care Package on 12 September 2024 but do not enter residential care until after 1 November 2025 receive only partial grandfathering. They retain the previous rules for ongoing care costs but not accommodation payments.

• Clients who did not meet either of these criteria will generally be assessed entirely under the new fee arrangements.

Being grandfathered can provide several financial advantages.

For accommodation payments, grandfathered residents: • are not subject to retention amounts deducted from refundable accommodation deposits (RADs); and • are not affected by future Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) indexation.

For ongoing care costs, grandfathered residents continue under the existing means-tested care fee arrangements rather than becoming subject to the newer Hotelling Contribution and Non-Clinical Care Contribution introduced under the reforms.

Depending on a person’s income and assets, this difference can represent many thousands of dollars over the course of their stay in residential aged care.

Services Australia continues to assess residents’ income and assets for aged care purposes, while the Department of Health determines the fee framework that applies under the legislation.

Situations That Often Cause Confusion Many people assume they lose grandfathering if paperwork or payments occur after 1 November 2025. In most cases this is not correct.

For example, a resident who entered residential care before 1 November 2025 remains grandfathered even if: • their means assessment is completed after that date; or • they pay their lump sum accommodation payment after 1 November 2025.

The important factor is generally when permanent residential care commenced, not when administrative requirements are completed.

Can Grandfathering Be Lost?

Yes. A resident may lose some or all grandfathering protections in certain circumstances.

Examples include: • leaving residential care for more than 28 days (excluding approved leave such as hospital leave); • voluntarily electing to cease grandfathering for ongoing care costs; or • changing residential aged care facilities after giving up grandfathering for ongoing costs.

These situations should always be carefully considered before making decisions about changing facilities or care arrangements, as they may permanently affect the fees payable.

Case Study – Why a Historical Home Care Package Approval Matters John, aged 83, has lived independently for several years. In September 2024 he was approved for a Level 4 Home Care Package, although he never commenced services because his family was able to provide the support he needed.

Now compare this with Margaret, who has almost identical assets, income and care needs, and enters the same residential aged care facility on the same day. Margaret was never approved for a Home Care Package before the reforms.

Although their financial circumstances are virtually identical, Margaret is assessed entirely under the new fee structure and may pay significantly higher ongoing care costs throughout her stay.

This example demonstrates why reviewing a client’s historical Home Care Package approval can be an important part of aged care planning.

Planning Opportunities For advisers and families, determining whether a client is grandfathered should be one of the first questions asked when planning an aged care strategy.

It is important to review: • when permanent residential aged care commenced; • whether the client was approved for a Home Care Package on 12 September 2024; • any breaks in residential aged care; • whether future transfers between facilities are likely; and • the long-term financial implications before making any decisions.

Small details can make a significant difference to the fees a resident pays over many years.

In Summary The aged care reforms have introduced a more complex fee system, making it increasingly important to establish exactly which rules apply to each individual.

Grandfathering provisions can substantially reduce ongoing costs for eligible residents, but eligibility depends on specific dates and circumstances. Before entering residential aged care—or changing providers—it is worth obtaining professional financial advice to ensure valuable grandfathering benefits are not unintentionally lost.

UNDERSTANDING THE TRANSFER BALANCE CAP – CAN YOU STILL CONTRIBUTE TO SUPER? RETIREMENT

For many Australians approaching or enjoying retirement, one of the most misunderstood superannuation rules is the Transfer Balance Cap (TBC). Many people believe that once they reach the cap, they can no longer contribute to superannuation. In reality, the rules are a little more complicated.

Understanding the difference between the Transfer Balance Cap and your Total Super Balance (TSB) can help you avoid costly mistakes and identify opportunities to continue building your retirement savings.

What is the Transfer Balance Cap? The Transfer Balance Cap is the maximum amount of superannuation that can be transferred from an accumulation account into a tax-free retirement income stream (accountbased pension).

For the 2025-26 financial year, the general Transfer Balance Cap is $2.0 million. Due to indexation, it increased to $2.1 million from 1 July 2026 for people commencing a retirement income stream for the first time, although many retirees will have their own personal Transfer Balance Cap based on when they first started a retirement pension.

Importantly, the Transfer Balance Cap does not limit how much super you can own. It simply limits how much can receive the tax advantages of being in the retirement (pension) phase.

For example: • You may have $2.8 million in super.

• You can only transfer up to your personal Transfer Balance Cap into a tax-free pension.

• The remaining balance stays in an accumulation account, where earnings continue to be taxed at a maximum rate of 15%.

Does reaching the Transfer Balance Cap stop you from contributing?

If your Total Super Balance is $2 million or more (2025-26) If your Total Super Balance was $2.0 million or more on 30 June 2025, you generally: • • • •

Cannot make non-concessional (after-tax) contributions.

Cannot use the bring-forward rule.

May still receive compulsory employer Super Guarantee contributions.

May still make concessional (before-tax) contributions, subject to the annual concessional contribution cap and eligibility requirements.

This is where many retirees become confused.

You may still be able to make concessional contributions Even if your Total Super Balance exceeds $2 million, you can generally still receive: • Employer Super Guarantee contributions • Salary sacrifice contributions • Personal deductible contributions These count towards your annual concessional contributions cap (subject to eligibility and any applicable rules).

Who cannot make after-tax contributions?

Generally, you cannot make non-concessional contributions if: • Your Total Super Balance equals or exceeds the General Transfer Balance Cap at the previous 30 June.

• You have already exceeded your available nonconcessional contribution cap.

• You do not satisfy other contribution eligibility requirements.

This rule catches many people by surprise because they assume they can always add more after-tax savings into super.

Common misconception A common statement is: “I’ve reached the Transfer Balance Cap, so I can’t contribute to super anymore.”

This isn’t always correct.

Many people confuse the Transfer Balance Cap with the rules governing superannuation contributions.

A person may have: • Reached their Transfer Balance Cap, • Be receiving a retirement pension, • Yet still be eligible to receive employer contributions or make concessional contributions.

Whether you can contribute depends primarily on your Total Super Balance (TSB) at 30 June of the previous financial year, not whether you have reached your Transfer Balance Cap.

Conversely, another person may never have started a pension but still be unable to make after-tax contributions because their Total Super Balance exceeds the relevant threshold.

Hundreds celebrate opening of world class ride facility

Local young people have helped to officially open our long-awaited Ocean Grove District Ride Centre at Kingston Park, savouring the opportunity to be the first to test out the brand new $3.5 million facility.

Led by Ocean Grove Bike Park Committee, Saturday’s grand opening included demo rides by World Trail and Tailwhips BMX Coaching, bike checks from Hendry’s, performances from local musicians and a Q&A session with a pro rider.

The district ride centre is a one-of-a-kind facility on Australia’s east coast that’s fully funded by the City, featuring: • five jump lines catering to riders of all skill levels, featuring rollers, berms, tabletops, hip jumps and a wall ride • asphalt pump track, designed to encourage rider progression and allowing for skate and scooter riders too • central landscaped space for spectators, gatherings and rider rest • start mound shelters, seating and bike rack.

World Trail constructed the tracks’ detailed shapes from 14,200 tonnes of recycled crushed concrete, sourced from the decommissioned Alcoa site at Point Henry.

The concrete, which passed multiple safety tests for reuse, was diverted from landfill and its use saved ratepayer funds, supported the circular economy and invested in local businesses.

“The Ocean Grove District Ride Centre is an impressive bike park that has far exceeded the expectations of both Council and the community.

It was great to see hundreds of mountain and BMX riders of all ages and skill levels excitedly try out the brand-new tracks and jumps.

The local community was pivotal to making this project a reality.

Young people and the Ocean Grove Bike Park Committee put the project on Council’s radar during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they called for a safe ride centre that could replace the increasing number of makeshift bike jumps.

“A massive thank you to the community for its passionate advocacy over the years which helped to guide planning.

Council recognised there needed to be a facility specifically on the Bellarine Peninsula, to complement The Hill Mountain Bike Park in Newtown and soon to be upgraded Waurn Ponds Jumps Park.

It really has been a whole community effort, with local schools, businesses, families, kids and Council all playing a part in getting it to where it is today.

Seeing the excitement around the opening and the park already full of people has been pretty amazing and it’s honestly exceeded anything we expected.

We’re so excited to finally see it being used the way we always hoped it would be.

We’d just encourage everyone to look after it and treat it with respect, so it stays a great place for the whole community to enjoy for years to come.”

Community members are reminded that powered bikes and scooters are banned from the facility as they pose serious safety risks to all riders and spectators.

The jumps and surfaces are not designed to be used at such high speeds.

The top layer of Polypave is made of mostly dirt, is hard-wearing and biofriendly, and is smooth and fast to ride on. Polypave will reduce maintenance for the City.

The facility has been extensively tested by the World Trail crew in controlled conditions.

Budget backs Geelong City Market after $8.3 million boost to local economy

Grab your tote bags and baskets – Saturday morning strolls through Little Malop Central are here to stay, with Council committing to support another year of the Geelong City Market.

The City’s new investment of $128,000, included in the adopted 2026–27 Budget, comes with a promise to build on the initiative’s success and make improvements while keeping quality and community at its heart.

Economic data shows the weekly event in central Geelong injected an estimated $8.3 million into the local economy in the first seven months since launching in late October 2025.

Each weekend, upwards of 44 stallholders welcome on average 6,500 visitors to the precinct, creating a vibrant, colourful scene of quality food, seasonal produce and handcrafts, alongside live music and cooking demonstrations.

Local raw honey and pure beeswax producers Jarrod and Maryanne Wallis, of The Bush Honey Co, have been at the market since it began last spring.

Greener future taking shape through City’s environmental action The City’s investment in protecting and enhancing the environment is already delivering real benefits for the community, while laying the foundations for a greener and more resilient future.

The Council’s July Meeting highlighted significant achievements and longterm planning that will help protect biodiversity, strengthen natural assets and respond to environmental and population challenges.

Together, these reports, plans and strategies set a clear direction for how the City will continue to care for and enhance the region’s environment for generations to come.

Environmental Strategy Highlights Report 2025-26 This report identifies the significant achievements towards the goals set out in The Environment Strategy 2020-30 and the 2024-26 Action Plan.

Together, these documents guide planning and decision-making to improve the health of the local environment, reduce the City’s environmental footprint and protect the lifestyle enjoyed by the community.

The report identifies the following key achievements: • The City’s corporate carbon emissions have been reduced by 41 per cent since 2019, delivering an estimated $900,000 in annual savings. Measures to reduce emissions have included street lighting upgrades, solar installations and entering into a long-term contract for the supply of renewable energy.

• Increased greening of community spaces through changes to guidelines and expanded support for nature strip landscaping.

• Collaborative restoration efforts to the Waurn Ponds Creek, Barwon River and Moorabool River systems through the planting of 50,000 indigenous plants.

• New circular economy initiatives, sustainable design planning provisions, and the ongoing funding support for the delivery of the Electric Homes Program.

Geelong Plan for Nature 2026-36 The Geelong Plan for Nature 2026-36 provides a long-term roadmap for identifying, protecting, restoring and enhancing the region’s biodiversity in the face of rapid population growth and climate change.

It responds to the ongoing loss of native plants, animals and ecosystems, and recognises that a healthy natural environment is essential to the region’s liveability and resilience.

The plan was adopted following extensive feedback from the community, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, environmental groups, agency representatives and City staff.

Draft Urban Forest Strategy: Healthy Country 2026-2036 This draft document sets the strategic approach to increasing the tree canopy and urban greening across the region.

It aims to keep neighbourhoods cooler, improve climate resilience and enhance liveability as Greater Geelong continues to grow.

The strategy identifies where greening should occur, how it can be integrated with planning and infrastructure, and how the City, community groups and government agencies can work together to deliver it.

The draft strategy is expected to open for community feedback in August.

It’s expected to return to Council in late-2026 for adoption.

Council backs regional library model and renews call for fairer funding

Our 15 much-loved libraries will remain within a Geelong Regional Library Corporation (GRLC) library network when Victorian Government law changes kick in, with no disruption to service expected for the community.

The Local Government Act 2020 requires regional library corporations to transition to a new enterprise model by 1 July 2031 that has stronger governance, transparency, accountability and strategic alignment.

Council last night committed to transition the municipality’s libraries to a new Company Limited by Guarantee that maintains a shared service with other regional councils and the corporation.

Modern libraries deliver far more than books, with free access to technology, digital literacy support, learning opportunities, programs, employment resources, connection and safe spaces. Libraries promote lifelong learning, wellbeing, inclusion and participation, particularly for vulnerable community members.

Every year, our library network attracts around 1.4 million visits and 2.9 million loans, with a strong and active membership base of more than 118,000 members (representing 30 per cent of the regional population).

These figures reinforce Council’s continued advocacy for the Victorian Government to increase operational and infrastructure funding for public libraries.

Historically, Victorian public libraries were funded through a genuine partnership between state and local governments, with the state’s contributions being nearly 50 per cent of operating costs.

However, declining Victorian Government contributions and cost shifting means councils now fund approximately 80 per cent.

Leopold Sports Precinct Upgrades officially opened The Leopold community is celebrating the official opening of major upgrades at Leopold Memorial Reserve, delivered to support growing participation in local sport and to create a more inclusive and accessible precinct for everyone.

These new facilities will make a real difference for the thousands of people who use the reserve each year and will help create more opportunities for women and girls to get involved in sport.

We worked so closely with the clubs and user groups throughout this project to understand what was needed and make sure this investment delivered facilities that will serve Leopold well into the future.

Now they have modern changerooms, upgraded sporting facilities, better lighting, improved accessibility and safer community spaces that reflect the importance of this precinct to Leopold.

Support for next generation of women leaders Three women from Greater Geelong will attend a five-day Igniting Leadership Program next month after receiving the City’s inaugural EmpowerHER Leadership Scholarships.

We announced these scholarships at our free Women in Community Life Celebration - 11 Years of Impact event in March to mark International Women’s Day. Cecile, Natasha and Kylie were selected by an assessment panel in recognition of their strong leadership potential, commitment to community, capacity to empower others and efforts to remove barriers to participation for vulnerable women.

Spread over five weeks and delivered by Leadership Victoria, the program will help emerging leaders explore their strengths and values, learn to navigate change and develop interpersonal skills to build trust and influence.

We received 15 expressions of interest of a very high calibre for the two EmpowerHER Leadership Scholarships, leading to the City deciding there was opportunity to sponsor a third.

The EmpowerHER Scholarships aim to help emerging leaders with tools and confidence to drive meaningful change in Greater Geelong.

This opportunity is made possible by funding from the City and our valued partners and sponsors including Member for Corangamite Libby Coker MP, Soroptimist International of Geelong, GMHBA, Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West and Zonta Club of Geelong.

Geelong makes case for Special Economic Zone pilot, following Ireland and China Central Geelong is calling for a special approach.

We know the heart of our vibrant region is full of potential, but it needs fresh thinking.

That’s why Council is championing a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) – an innovative pilot program for regional Australia – to help fast-track the revitalisation of our city centre and meet the demand of our growing community.

It’s worked in Europe and Asia, and we’re confident it could be a success here.

The proposed five-year pilot would unlock housing and business development, and help restore confidence, interest and investment in central Geelong and the greater region by extension.

We now need the Australian and Victorian governments to get on board, by committing to tax breaks, stamp duty concessions, investment support and planning reform.

“We’ve led through manufacturing, education, health, technology and clean energy, and now we have an opportunity to lead Australia once again.

A Special Economic Zone could go a long way towards driving the private investment and economic development we desperately need.

We have vacant and under-utilised land in central Geelong that’s ready to go, and we need to incentivise development.

I’d like to work with the Australian and Victorian governments to develop a solution for Geelong that could be replicated in other key growth cities.

If we can bring all levels of government together, we have a real opportunity to create a national model for housing delivery, CBD revitalisation and regional economic growth.”

Central Geelong already has at least 16 approved residential and mixed-use developments that remain stalled because current market conditions make them financially unviable.

At the same time, Greater Geelong has been set Victoria’s largest housing target of any municipality – metropolitan or regional – with 128,600 new homes required by 2051. Around 60 per cent of those homes are expected to be delivered through infill development.

Our SEZ proposal requires federal and state governments to: •

make significant land tax and stamp duty concessions

•

reduce government fees and charges

•

back financial schemes for apartment pre-sales

•

fast-track planning approvals

•

fund infrastructure.

“Many of these measures wouldn’t cost governments anything in the short term because they would unlock projects that simply aren’t proceeding today.

Over time, increased development and economic activity would generate greater revenue while creating more homes and jobs.”

The proposal draws on decades of international success. Special Economic Zones have transformed cities and regional economies around the world, including the Shannon region in Ireland and Shenzhen in China, by attracting investment, creating jobs and accelerating urban renewal.

More recently, governments have used SEZs to stimulate housing delivery alongside economic growth.

Transforming central Geelong is one of Council’s hallmark priority projects for 2026, and the SEZ is part of that advocacy.

NOT-FOR-PROFIT OF Community Forum Set to Shine Light on Prostate Cancer Awareness in Geelong Humour plays a vital role at the meetings. Anonymity outside the meetings is assured. Geelong Prostate Cancer Support Group is affiliated with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and supported by Cancer Council Victoria.

Prostate cancer remains the second most common cause of cancer death among Australian men, with nearly 4,000 males losing their lives to the disease each year—surpassing female breast cancer deaths. Accounting for almost 30% of all new male cancer diagnoses, Australian men face a 1-in-5 lifetime chance of diagnosis and a 1-in-23 chance of dying from the disease. Furthermore, a family history of prostate or related cancers doubles a man’s average risk.

While diagnosis rates in younger age groups (40–50 and 30–40) are low, they are accelerating. Local data shows that diagnosis rates in the Greater Geelong area and across the Southwest Region of Victoria are lower than the national average, yet mortality rates are significantly higher indicating dangerously low early testing and detection rates across our region.

Expert and helpful guidance from the health professionals is vital before and during the treatment process. However, the people who may have the clearest understanding of the feelings of a diagnosed man are those who have already been through the treatment and recovery process.

Newly diagnosed men often find discussions with support group members particularly helpful in better understanding their prostate diagnosis and the treatment options available.

Geelong Prostate Cancer Support Group is a group of men and their partners who meet informally for a couple of hours each month. Meetings often have a guest speaker who will cover matters of interest relating to prostate cancer and related issues.

At meetings members exchange experiences, compare treatments and discuss their side effects.

A home is burgled about every 20 minutes in Victoria. We’ve got 8 quick security fixes you can put on your weekend jobs’ list to make your home more burglar-proof.

1.

Get rid of the hidden house key

Most people have a spare key hidden somewhere outside their home. Burglars know all the hiding spots, even the notso-common ones. So take your spare and give it to a neighbour, friend or family member you trust.

2.

Light up your entry

Test exterior lights at night to check that they’re working and provide enough illumination. Consider installing flood or motion sensor lights around front and rear entries, in your drive way and in any dark spots.

3.

Trim shrubs to cut down hiding spots

Trim any shrubs and trees that are in front of windows, gates and entries so that crooks don’t have a place to hide. Aim to have a clear line of sight from your front door and windows to the street.

4.

Grow plants that burglars hate

Plant thorny or prickly shrubs and plants such as cacti, native blackthorn, native raspberry or Mount Blackwood holly under windows to make your home even less appealing to burglars.

5.

Stop sliding doors in their tracks

Install a piece of wooden dowel into the track of a sliding glass door or window to stop it from being forced open. Choose dowel that is thinner than the track and cut it to be around 1cm shorter, so that it fits snugly.

6. Check your locks are working effectively Do a stock-take of your door and window locks. Fix or replace any broken locks and upgrade any weak ones with stronger keyed locks, deadbolts or keypad locks.

7.

Make it harder for crooks to see in

Install one-way blinds on your windows to let natural light in but keep prying eyes out.

8.

Strengthen your external doors

Upgrade your door fittings and hardware to make it harder for crooks to force their way in. Replace screws in hinges and strike plates with ones that are at least 80cm long. If your hinges only have 4 or 6 screw holes, replace them with ones that have 8 or 10. And invest in a good quality steel box strike plate for your door latch.

9. Secure your property’s gates and sheds Lock all gates – front, side and back gates using good quality locks. And don’t forget the garden shed.

Boutique Homes have been an extraordinary partner in supporting Cottage and the new Riptide facility, finalising the sale of their second charity home, with every dollar of the proceeds donated to the rebuild of Riptide. We’re delighted to share the wonderful news that the home has now sold – an incredible contribution that completes all funding for the build, debt free, and enables us to welcome more children to Cottage.

As we head into winter, we’re excited to share a major milestone – Riptide is now officially open.

Already welcoming its first group, the space has been designed to create more opportunities for connection, challenge and joy. From adventure, shared meals and games, to moments of quieter reflection, it’s a place where young people can step outside their comfort zones and simply enjoy being kids. As one participant shared, “this camp’s gonna be one of the memories that sticks with us forever.”

It also comes at a timely moment. New research from Deakin University, Turning Points for Children Experiencing Vulnerabilities: The Role of Outdoor Adventure (2026), reinforces just how powerful these experiences can be.

The findings highlight how adventure-based experiences shape both present wellbeing and future aspirations.

What it confirms is what we see every day: when young people are given the opportunity to challenge themselves and step outside their comfort zones, they build resilience, strengthen relationships and begin to see new possibilities for their future.

Being Emotionally Available for our Children Justin Coulson has written a brilliant little book entitled, ‘What your child needs from you.’ The opening chapter talks about the importance of being available emotionally for our children.

We’re often not available emotionally because we’re not in the right head space – we’re too busy, we’re too preoccupied with something else or we forget how important it is to give our children our undivided attention.

Another issue is that our children want our attention at seemingly the most inopportune times.

Even though my four children are grown up and are almost totally independent from my wife and I, sometimes when they call on the phone I’m mildly annoyed because I’m in the middle of something ‘important’. Each time they call, I have to remind myself that they are more important than the mundane thing that I’m doing. I need to stop and give them my full attention, otherwise I’ll miss the moment – a golden opportunity to connect with my children.

Coulson states that children who have parents / carers that give them their full attention on a regular basis are able to say: • My parents / carers support me • My parents / carers console me when I am upset • My parents / carers show they care about me • My parents / show a genuine interest in me • My parents / carers remember things that are important to me • My parents / carers are available to talk to me at any time • My parents / carers spend extra time with me just because they want to • My parents / carers ask questions in a caring manner • My parents / carers are willing to talk about my troubles • My parents / carers talk with me about my interests • My parents / carers value my input • My parents / carers make me feel wanted Evidence indicates that children who’ve had the privilege of parents / carers who have done the above have a greater self-confidence, are more resilient, better learners, have superior social skills and are better able to handle their emotions than children who haven’t.

So, if we’re too busy to give our children our full attention then perhaps we’re too busy and we need to slow down or change our priorities.

One story that Coulson recounts is of a mother who attended one of his workshops who shared the following: After learning about being emotionally available with my children, I decided that I would turn off the television at meal times and that we would talk. One night I asked my children what had been good about their day. As they talked, I felt great to be having these conversations with them. For decades, the Rotary Club of Geelong East and the Rotary Club of Bayside Geelong have served the community with dedication, creativity, and heart. LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB Founded from the vision of locals Len Lewis and Kevin Ash in 1971, Leopold Sporties officially opened in 1975 as a family-friendly sporting club. Thanks to decades of community support and dedicated volunteers, the club has grown into a welcoming hub in Leopold, Victoria, offering Bowls, Golf, Racquetball and Squash for all ages and skill levels.

FC LEOPOLD Established in 2016, FC Leopold is a community football (soccer) club based in Leopold, Victoria. Built by passionate volunteers, the club provides a welcoming, family-friendly environment where players can develop their skills, build character and enjoy the game. Committed to growing the sport locally, FC Leopold continues to play an active role in strengthening the Leopold community.

CORIO LITTLE ATHLETICS CENTRE Founded in 1966, Corio Little Athletics Centre is one of Victoria’s longest-standing Little Athletics centres. Serving families across Geelong, Lara and the Golden Plains region, the centre has a proud history of developing young athletes in a welcoming and inclusive environment. From the 2025–26 season, its remaining clubs united to compete as one team—Team Corio—continuing a legacy of community, participation and athletic development.

LEOPOLD LITTLE ATHLETICS CLUB Established in 1976, Leopold Little Athletics Club provides a fun, inclusive and familyfriendly environment where children aged 5–17 can develop their running, jumping and throwing skills. Through weekly competitions and optional training, the club encourages personal growth, healthy lifestyles and community involvement while helping every athlete achieve their personal best.

WINTER WRAP UP Little Athletics main season is over the summer, however through winter there is a cross-country season and other opportunities.

CROSS COUNTRY Corio athletes have been running at Rippleside Park, Seagull Paddock in North Geelong, and Moorpanyal Park in North Shore, as well as Lara Lakelands, Fyansford Common, and Teesdale Grassy Woodlands. These locations provide venues closer to home for members who live outside of Geelong.

There are also several Little Athletics Vic (LAV) cross-country competitions available.

Corio athletes competed in the LAV Cross-Country Relay Championships held at Jells Park in Wheelers Hill with athletes competing in teams of 3.

Athletes have also travelled to the Bacchus Marsh Open Day and to Staughton Vale for the Western Metro Region Carnival.

Running in the Region Carnival qualifies athletes to compete in the State Championships to be held at Lake Dewar in Myrniong in August.

Jack loves being able to run longer distances and explore different places, while Ryan enjoys running outdoors with his friends and having the opportunity to compete at regional and state championships.

WINTER TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS In 2023-24, Little Athletics Vic introduced a winter track and field competition where 3 qualifying meets are held at 3 host centres around the state. Athletes compete at one of these meets in a set combination of events and score points to achieve an aggregate result.

This year, Corio was very excited to be chosen to host one of these qualifying meets, and had athletes from 46 centres compete.

Qualifiers then progress to the Winter State Championships, to be held in Berwick in August, where Corio has 4 athletes competing.

Athletes are now looking forward to summer 2026-27, when the Corio Centre will celebrate 60 years.

The season kicks off with a Come & Try day on Saturday, September 19, and the season starts on Saturday, October 3, with a 2-week free trial available.

Spend an afternoon immersed in French Impressionism and classic indulgence.

The 22nd Bellarine Rail Trail Run (17 or 34kms) will be held on Sunday August 23, 2026 as an out and back course from Queenscliff to Drysdale Railway Station and return (34km) or one-way Drysdale to Queenscliff (17km) along the BRT. The trail is tremendously scenic and ideal for running being wide, well marked and all on smooth, unsealed paths aside from the 4.5kms at the Queenscliff end (sealed). It is an ideal training run for the Geelong Running Festival and Melbourne Marathon events.

The course is relatively traffic free, but you do have to cross some major roads and the railway line, so please take care.

The trail is also open to the general public and it is important that their use is not affected by the event. For this reason, this is NOT A RACE – there are no prizes for finishing first!

Consider yourself at home with Oliver! Jr., the Broadway Junior version of Lionel Bart’s classic musical based on Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist. The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin.

When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Geelong Set for Historic AFL & AFLW Doubleheaders in August Geelong’s AFL and AFLW teams will take part in two double-header clashes in Rounds 23 and 24 of the Men’s season and Rounds 1 and 2 of the Women’s season.

The Geelong Football Club will be involved in a pair of historic doubleheader clashes in August, with both the Cats AFL and AFLW teams set to feature in matches on the same day at the same venue.

It will give Cats fans the opportunity to see both their Men’s and Women’s teams in action, with the club’s Melbourne and Geelong supporters set to benefit from the fixture announcement.

The first double-header will take place on August 15, with the AFLW Cats set to take on the reigning premiers, North Melbourne, in their season opener at Marvel Stadium, the first AFLW game at the venue since 2022.

Geelong’s AFLW clash will begin at 1.05pm AEST, before the Cats and the Kangaroos do battle in the AFL game from 3.45pm AEST at Marvel Stadium, which will be the penultimate week of the home and away season for the AFL competition.

The following week will be another double-header for the Cats but this time at GMHBA Stadium, taking place on Saturday August 22 in an exciting occasion for the club.

Geelong’s AFLW team will kick off the action with their Round 2 clash against St Kilda, which will commence at 5.05pm AEST, before the Cats’ AFL side will conclude their regular season against Richmond, with that game to kick off at 7.45pm.

Embracing Every Opportunity in First AFLW Pre-Season

For first-year Cat Renee Morgan, every training session has been another opportunity to learn, adapt and continue building towards the upcoming AFLW season.

Those opportunities at VFLW level have allowed the young midfielder to continue developing her game while adjusting to the increased intensity of a higher level.

After being drafted to Geelong last year, Morgan has spent the opening months of her first pre-season soaking up as much knowledge as possible from an experienced playing group, while also earning valuable minutes with the VFLW side.

She identified quick hands, quick decision-making and increasing her sprint efforts as key areas of focus throughout the pre-season, while continuing to adjust to the speed of the game.

With Geelong boasting a talented midfield, Morgan knew opportunities would not come easily, but she has embraced the challenge.

“We have a very strong midfield,” Morgan said. “It’s pretty hard to break in as a first-year player, so I just wanted to get some solid midfield time”.

Morgan has also valued the chance to learn from the experienced midfield group throughout her first few months at the club.

Alongside the learning environment, Morgan has enjoyed becoming part of the playing group. “It’s good to not just be running, getting around a good group of girls,” Morgan added.

Regular opportunities with the VFLW side have also been an important part of her development.

Morgan said it has been good to get some “solid minutes” with the VFLW team as she continued building her game.

The Cats first-year players have quickly settled into life at the club, with Morgan highlighting the support of both her fellow draftees and experienced teammates.

“It’s been great learning off the other midfielders,” she said.

“Jas (Stewart) is great, she’s experienced,” Morgan said.

Geelong will celebrate a famous era in the club’s history this weekend, when they take on Essendon at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday afternoon THE STATE OF PLAY It might just be one of the tightest races to September in recent history, with so much still to play for and only three games remaining in the home and away season, along with the addition of the new Wildcard Round which brings in another layer of intrigue for 2026.

As it currently stands, three teams are tied on 52 points and only percentage separating fourth position on the ladder down to sixth, but Geelong are nipping at their heels in seventh just one win off the pace.

The Cats can not afford to slip in their final three games but the draw does open up, taking on the bottom two teams on the ladder and North Melbourne who sit in 13th, providing them the opportunity to finish the regular season strongly.

Three games remain in the 2026 regular season and the dash to September is shaping up to be one of the tightest in recent history, with Geelong set to play a key part as they prepare to take on Essendon in Round 22.

With three consecutive wins under their belt and two in a row against fellow Finals contenders, the Cats have risen to seventh on the ladder and now sit just one game out of the top four, after taking care of business against Collingwood last Thursday.

LAST TIME WE MET Geelong hosted Essendon at GMHBA Stadium in Round 22 last year in what was a surprisingly a hot contest, the Cats kicking away early but having to stave off a third quarter challenge from the Bombers to claim a 44-point victory.

Geelong’s final three games in the home and away season will see them face Essendon, North Melbourne and Richmond, with a chance to push for a top six spot on the ladder or even better, fourth position and a double chance in the post-season.

There are still plenty of big games ahead that will have a substantial impact on the final standings, but for Geelong the equation is simple: just keep winning when they take on the Bombers on Saturday afternoon.

The match will also be Retro Round for Geelong, with the Cats to wear a specially designed guernsey celebrating some iconic eras from the club’s history.

If Geelong can win out, attention will turn to other crucial games between teams around them on the ladder, such as Melbourne v Fremantle and Brisbane v Hawthorn this week, along with Adelaide v Fremantle next weekend.

Utilised as a prime distributor and able to roll through the midfield more, Bruhn has had a remarkable 2026 season but has gone to another level recently, collected 22 disposals or more in four of his last five games.

He was very important last Thursday in the victory over Collingwood, finishing the night with 24 possessions and five intercept possessions, while still going at an impressive 75% disposal efficiency.

The CC Eagles basketball club is grateful to have so many fantastic team managers, parents and coaching volunteers that are the heartbeat of the club.

We’ll be checking in with all club presidents to find out not only about them, but also some club history and what’s happening behind the scenes.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how long you’ve been affiliated with the club?

I started as a player at the club over 20 years ago. I progressed into coaching and have been active on the clubs committee. I’m grateful to hold the CC Eagles club president position. A role held for the last 9 years.

What area of Geelong does the club represent?

The CC Eagles is an all-inclusive basketball club open to both Christian College and the wider community, that promotes the development of our members at all levels of competition throughout Geelong, Bellarine and the Surf Coast.

How long has your club been operational for and what are some of the historical milestones for the club?

VENOM LAND GLOBAL BASKETBALL STAR HAN XU, WELCOME WANGLAI ZHANG FOR 2026/27 The Venom have also confirmed the signing of Wanglai Zhang, a decorated international competitor with a growing reputation across both traditional and 3x3 basketball.

Zhang won the U18 Asian Championship in 2012 and finished fifth at the U19 World Cup the following year, before going on to claim back-to-back WCBA titles in 2022–23 and 2023–24. She also won the Chinese 3x3 league championship in 2023, where she was named MVP.

Geelong Venom has pulled off a huge recruiting coup, confirming the commitment of Chinese superstar centre Han Xu alongside the commitment of forward/ guard Wanglai Zhang, with both players joining the club on one-year deals for the 2026/27 WNBL season pending league approval.

“She’s a WNBA superstar, a multiple-time WCBA MVP, and reigning WNBL Defensive Player of the Year — her shot-blocking and rebounding are genuinely elite.

Adding that size and experience to our roster gives this team a real edge, and we can’t wait to see what she brings to the club this year,” said Chambers.

Han needs little introduction to basketball fans anywhere in the world. At 211cm, she is the second-tallest player in WNBA history and has drawn comparisons throughout her career to Chinese basketball icon Yao Ming.

Han arrives in Geelong off the back of a standout debut WNBL campaign with the Perth Lynx in 2025/26, where she was named WNBL Defensive Player of the Year and selected in the All-WNBL Second Team, averaging two blocks per game and helping the Lynx to a 12–2 record across her 14 games before a Championship series appearance.

Drafted 14th overall by the New York Liberty in 2019 as the youngest player in her draft class, Han has gone on to become a three-time WCBA MVP, a two-time WCBA champion, and a WNBA Commissioner’s Cup winner. On the international stage, she helped China to a silver medal at the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, earning a place in the tournament’s AllStar Five, before being named MVP of the 2023 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup. Venom head coach Cheryl Chambers said that Han Xu is one of the most dominant post players in the world right now, and that the organisation was thrilled about the roster addition.

Han said that joining the Geelong Venom is an exciting new chapter.

“I’ve played against Australian teams before, including a season with Perth, and I know how passionate this league’s fans are and how much the competition has grown. I’m looking forward to bringing everything I’ve built over my career — from China to the WNBA — into this team, and pushing for something special with my new teammates this year,” said Han.

Most recently, Zhang starred at this year’s FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup, hitting a string of clutch shots to keep her team in contention before falling to Australia on a last-second buzzer-beater — then leading her side to a dominant bronze medal win over Japan.

Zhang said that joining the Venom meant stepping out of her comfort zone, trying a new brand of basketball, and taking on a fresh challenge.

“I’m really looking forward to soaking up the basketball vibe in Geelong – such a big sports town. Huge thanks to all my fans for sticking with me. No idea what’s ahead, but I’m going to keep loving the game and take it one step at a time.

Can’t wait to get settled in, learn the system, and go to battle with my new teammates,” said Zhang.

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jampacked with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment includes a multicoloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment.

There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

WESTERN BEACH People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s.

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

STEAMPACKET GARDENS Located right beside the water Steampcket Gardens Geelong is a big rctangle of lush lown that’s perfect for relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

THE CAROUSEL The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 ArmitageHerschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

OLD GAOL A 19th century gaol which operated from 1853-1991 in the same conditions you see today.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.
