Letter from the Foundation President Dear Friend of the Foundation, The summer has flown by. The past few months, your Foundation has been hard at work making change in our community because of your philanthropy.

In July, we shared our virtual Annual celebration. In addition to giving you a glimpse of what we’ve been up to, we also debuted our updated mission statement: The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation will improve the quality of life for all in the community.

A mission is more than a statement for a nonprofit organization; it’s our north star and our one-way test. This simple sentence allows us to focus on what’s most important: caring for those in the community. The mission is on the wall in our board room and is referenced when the board makes a decision. Does this fit within our mission?

A big part of our work is The Family Center, which you will read more about in the following pages. Located at 1800 North Blanchard Street, our board purchased a former grocery store in 2005. In 2006, The Family Center opened its doors. It’s now home to 12 nonprofits offering a wide variety of services to the community: food, clothing, medical care, legal services and more. It’s more than a building known for its orange roof, but a space for collaboration and care. This space is just one of the ways we work to improve the quality of life for our friends, family and neighbors.

While we would love to welcome the public to the building to celebrate this milestone 15th anniversary, the health and safety of the organizations’ staff and visitors is critical during the pandemic. Instead, I invite you to visit our website www.community-foundation.com for a virtual tour. And in lieu of a celebration, we are asking for your support to grow The Family Center Forever Fund to support the long-term maintenance and care for this meaningful building.

Fifteen Years of Serving the Community

The Family Center celebrates a milestone anniversary The Family Center is home to 12 nonprofit organizations serving the needs of our friends, families and neighbors. From medical to clothing to mental health, there are many resources under one roof. The Family Center is the result of the Foundation listening to the needs of the community and partner nonprofits. Collaboration between agencies creates an atmosphere of caring on one campus.

The Community Foundation has invested $5.8 million in the building for the community. We know The Family Center will continue to be a central point of services for many more years.

2007 Caughman Health Center expands to include pediatric and adult care units.

2002-2003 The idea of a nonprofit campus came about in planning The Community Foundation’s 10th anniversary. Community leaders rallied around the idea and began to plan.

2005 The former Food Town grocery store was purchased and construction began.

2012 The Family Center serves as a hub for victims of the June 28th Derecho.

2010 Hancock Metropolitan Housing Authority expands.

2006 2004 Renovation planning began with RCM Architects.

The Family Center opened its doors on June 1, 2006. Ten of the current tenant agencies were part of the original group. Hancock Leadership Class of 2006 coordinated move-in.

2008-2009 Renovations made to expand Caughman Health Center and Legal Aid.

2011 Caughman Health Center opens an on-site pharmacy.

The Hancock Properties Foundation is a supporting organization of The Community Foundation. Established in 2005, The Hancock Properties Board acts as landlord for the agencies housed at The Family Center.

Hancock Properties also serves as an entity that holds all gifts of real property to The Community Foundation.

2018

2014 Hope House expands.

The Family Center becomes part of the Multi-Agency Recovery Center (MARC) system.

Your support of the Family Center Forever Fund will ensure the building is maintained and will remain a safe and efficient workplace for the community’s nonprofit agencies to fulfill their missions now and forever.

2016 Celebrated 10 years with a community open house and rededication.

Audio visual equipment in the conference rooms upgraded to support nonprofit meeting space. New watering system installed to support Community Gardens.

2020 Family Resource Center joins the building. Tenant nonprofits rally for pandemic support.

2015 2013 HHWP Community Action Commission joins the building. A generator is added to support the building during community disasters.

Dental Center expands.

Family-use restroom added for additional accessibility. United Way of Hancock County started the Community Gardens next to the building.

2021

2019 2017 Assistant Building Manager hired to help with growing needs.

LED lighting installed to reduce carbon footprint by 87.2 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Match Offered for Mental Health Support Community Mental Health Fund (Goal of $1M)

The Community Mental Health Fund of the Foundation is nearing its goal of $1 million. At $1 million, the fund will award approximately $45,000 per year for local nonprofits offering mental health services. To date, the fund has supported projects like Hancock Helps, criminal justice programming and nurturing parenting programs.

Your support is needed to achieve the $1 million goal for the Community Mental Health Fund. Foundation Board Chair Ginger Jones and her husband Jeff are offering a $40,000 match to the fund from now until the end of 2021.

Our community’s mental health is critical to its overall wellbeing. We hope this match grows the Community Mental Health Fund to be able to support the mental health of our friends, families and neighbors forever. ~ Jeff and Ginger Jones

Nonprofit Spotlight Findlay Hope House for the Homeless During the pandemic, Hope House has been a major part of several critical programs including eviction prevention and the Housing Helpline. The organization is also celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021. Finance Update The Foundation’s pooled composite returns vs. the benchmark* as of June 30, 2021 were as follows: •

For the 1-year period, the Total Return was +32.3% vs. +27.9%.

For the 3-year period, the Total Return was +11.0% vs. +11.2%.

•

For the 5-year period, the Total Return was +11.4% vs. +10.7%, and the Foundation’s Hurdle ROR** of 8.1%.

For the 10-year period, the Total Return was +7.8% vs. +7.4%, and versus the Foundation’s Hurdle ROR of 7.4%.
