The amazing Ferrofluid is a truly magnetic liquid that consists of micron size magnetic particles (magnetite) in a mineral oil. Particles are coated in a surfactant which prevents them clumping together. When a magnet is in close proximity the magnetic particles in the Ferrofluid take up the shape of the magnetic field – a 3D version of the classic iron filings on a piece of paper experiment. The apparent density of ferrofluid can be changed by applying a magnetic field, e.g. place a one pence piece in a shallow dish (5mm) of ferrofluid and it will sink. All the loggers come in the form of a USB stick, so no cables are required to retrieve data or configure the device. The sensor, memory and battery are all encapsulated on a single circuit so no additional hardware is required (battery life is estimated at 2 to 3 years and is replaceable). Sample rates can be set between once per second and once every hour, meaning the sample memory can store from 2 hours to almost a year of data! Points on ordering chemicals
We only use UN approved packaging, with the appropriate hazard warnings and delivery note clearly visible on the outside. So when chemicals arrive at a school it is clear what they are, helping staff to deal with them promptly and safely.
Purity and molarity Some chemicals, irrespective of grade, contain additives such as an anti-caking agent. This has no appreciable effect on the chemical behaviour of the substance, but does affect the amount that must be weighed out to achieve solutions of accurate molarity. E.g. copper sulfate-5-water is 98% pure, so a 1M solution requires 249.68 ÷ 0.98 = 254.78g to be dissolved in 1 litre. Allow to settle or filter to remove any insoluble component.
