How many children are in school today? How many children are having a school lunch? Real life objects are placed in the maths area for children to use, for example during autumn months conkers and leaves maybe added, in winter baubles may be added and in summer shells. Children are also encouraged to show their counting using fngers for a visual aid. Number lines are placed around the classroom for visual aids.

Children’s learning of numbers is holistic and they do not learn to count in the traditional order. Larger numbers often fascinate children, especially boys, as they see 100 or 1000 as a “big” number.
