Outdoor learning is so important, it encourages environmental awareness and exposes them to nature. We have created a herb garden outside using types which allow the children to understand the process of growing, from planting the herbs and smelly plants, using them in our mud kitchen to create smells, and then for use in cooking. We also use the mint they have grown to make mocktails!

Children love to be outdoors, and having free fow activities maximises learning opportunities. There are plenty of ways the outdoors can be used as learning spaces. The foors for mark making, maths games and physical activities. The walls can be used for boards, mark making, with shelves for tubs and planting, and windows for washing! Fences can be used to attach old pots and pans and utensils for making sounds and ribbon for weaving. A planting area is always a nice space for children to help plant fruit, veg and fowers as well as a herb garden.

Inspiring ideas to help little learners

Introduction to the ELIZABETH JARMAN ® Ideas Series In this series we are going to be sharing some thought provoking ideas and designs for your learning environment, which you can transfer immediately into your context to benefit your children. Showcasing products from Hope alongside adapted and refreshed alternatives, we will explain the ELIZABETH JARMAN® rationale and how the spaces created set the scene for effective learning. This is the first in the series. Each trio of spaces will draw out key points for you to think about as you purchase products, reconfigure your existing space and adapt or refresh resources.

PLACES TO WATCH FROM Many children, especially those who are new to your environment can find large, open spaces overwhelming. Busy activity, movement flow and associated noise can affect a child’s confidence to join in. Therefore, providing a place to observe the area from and what goes on before joining in, can really help to build confidence and understanding. This is really important in the outside area, especially if some of your children are not used to ‘free flow’ into a garden area at home.

TEEPEE Consider: Position the space away from noise and make sure it’s easy to get to. Which way does it face? What view is the child getting? Offer seating and standing options.

PALLET BOX

Make sure it’s inclusive and accessible. Create clear ways in and out – some spaces might have delineated pathways- posing questions to children – what will I find in here? Visual sightlines for both children and adults. The calming effect of natural materials and neutral textured fabrics. Practise considerations – noticing observers, supporting them, ‘letting it happen’, gentle companionship and partnering.

Have you noticed that some of your children are observers? Research into brain development shows that for some children who find transition into a setting or school difficult, can have a raised cortisol level (stress related hormone). Transforming learning environments into emotionally safe places is therefore critical.

Resourcing that is reassuring and easy to engage with – offering a connection with home. Spaces should not be cluttered or over resourced. Some spaces can be purposefully small, just big enough for one or small groups, encouraging manageable social interaction as a starting point.

PLANTS SPACE

Places to watch from offer secure bases where children can join in at their own pace, when they are ready; providing steady social exposure, managed by the child. Position these places in areas which are easy to access and offer a view of the space, whilst still providing essential adult connection.
